Exploring the Forbidden City: The Heart of Imperial Beijing

#falladventures
Historical Background

Construction of the Forbidden City began in 1406, under the orders of the Yongle Emperor (Zhu Di) of the Ming dynasty, and was completed in 1420. It took over 14 years and required the labor of around one million workers and 100,000 artisans.

The palace remained the seat of power for 24 emperors — 14 from the Ming dynasty and 10 from the Qing dynasty — until the abdication of the last emperor, Puyi, in 1912, which marked the end of imperial rule in China.
