The Wuhou Shrine was originally built during the Tang Dynasty (around the 6th to 7th century), several centuries after Zhuge Liang's death.

Over the years, it evolved into a large memorial complex combining both a shrine and a tomb site, especially after the Ming and Qing dynasties, when major renovations and expansions were carried out.
