Wat Chedi Luang: Ancient Majesty in the Heart of Chiang Mai

In the centre of Chiang Mai’s Old City stands Wat Chedi Luang, a majestic temple steeped in history and grandeur. Built in the 14th century, this once-towering Lanna-style chedi was one of the tallest structures in ancient Chiang Mai before being partially damaged by an earthquake in the 1500s.

Even in its ruined state, the massive brick stupa commands awe. Intricate carvings, guardian nagas, and elephant statues hint at its former glory. Wat Chedi Luang once housed the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most sacred relic, now in Bangkok.

Today, it remains a vital spiritual site where locals make offerings, monks give blessings, and visitors can witness centuries of northern Thai heritage.

🕘 Open daily | 🎟️ Entry: ~50 THB
