Hakata Machiya Folk Museum

Hakata Machiya Folk Museum is a small museum located next to Kushida Shrine, dedicated to showcasing the traditional culture and lifestyle of Hakata during the Meiji and Taisho periods. The museum is divided into three main areas: the 'Machiya Exhibition Hall' recreates the living spaces of traditional Japanese wooden buildings, displaying old furniture and crafts; the 'Exhibition Hall' showcases the history and tools of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival; and the 'Craft Hall' allows visitors to watch local artisans create traditional crafts such as 'Hakata-ori' textiles and 'Hakata dolls,' with opportunities to try weaving or painting the dolls themselves. Although the museum is small in scale, it offers rich exhibitions that provide a deep understanding of Fukuoka's folk culture. It is recommended to visit this museum on the same day as Kushida Shrine, especially for those who appreciate traditional Japanese culture and crafts.
