The river originates from Kanas Lake (喀纳斯湖) — a glacial lake fed by snowmelt from the surrounding Altay Mountains.

The name "Kanas" comes from the Mongolian language, meaning "beautiful, mysterious lake."

From the lake, the river flows southeast through dense forests, mountain valleys, and grasslands, eventually joining the Burqin River, a tributary of the Irtysh — the only river in China that flows into the Arctic Ocean.
