【Hyogo/Himeji】The Majestic Himeji Castle and Akashiyaki

*Himeji Castle*
Himeji Castle, located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle, visible from the platform of Himeji Station, is truly awe-inspiring up close due to its massive size. While it may seem walkable from the station, taking a bus from the station area is highly recommended. The distance is longer than expected, and climbing the castle, which lacks elevators, requires additional physical effort, so it's best to conserve your energy!

Himeji Castle underwent extensive renovations until 2015, and its brilliant white exterior walls now shine beautifully. Although it appears to be five stories tall from the outside, the internal structure makes it six stories. Inside, you can see the thick pillars supporting the building, making the climb to the sixth floor well worth the effort. As you ascend, the view improves significantly, and the breeze flows through the castle. However, there are no vending machines inside, so be sure to bring drinks, especially during warmer months. Additionally, the steep stairs, characteristic of old buildings, require caution when going up and down.

The craftsmanship of the people who built the castle in the past and the modern techniques used to preserve it are truly impressive. Guided tours in Japanese, English, and even apps are available for a fee, and many visitors use them to explore the castle.

After purchasing a meal ticket and finding a seat, you can enjoy freshly made Akashiyaki-style takoyaki served with two flavors: dashi broth and sauce.

This shop is popular among locals of all ages. While you might expect the takoyaki to be eaten with dashi broth, many locals enjoy it with plenty of sauce before dipping it into the broth. The gentle and delicious flavor of the takoyaki makes this unique combination understandable and enjoyable.
