Since being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, Hoi An has become a major tourist destination in Vietnam.
Hoi An was once a bustling international port, where ships from China, Japan, and Southeast Asian countries docked. The cultural influence from China and Japan is the most profound, so you'll always see traces of Chinese or Japanese influences while strolling through the ancient town.
If you have enough time, I highly recommend staying two nights in Hoi An. Exploring the ancient town early in the evening avoids large tour groups. After the groups leave for dinner, you can find a café, watch the tuk-tuks lining the alleyways, enjoy the night view of the Thu Bon River, and truly soak in the atmosphere of the ancient town. You'll love Hoi An even more.
Moreover, accommodation in Hoi An is very affordable. With a little searching, you can easily find cheap and beautiful hotels—I'm not kidding!
