In 2014, the Bon Festival was included in the "Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage List". I accidentally discovered this traditional cultural event held in Central every year on Instagram - the 30 neighborhood Bon Festival in Central District.
Today (September 15) I finally had the chance to walk into Stanton Street in Central and experience it up close. As the first time I had a close contact with such a traditional cultural event, the whole process was full of freshness and shock.
The Victory Club insists on using traditional bamboo sheds to set up the venue. The whole scaffolding is made of bamboo branches, together with the colorful flags and altars hanging around it, unlike the metal frames commonly used in modern events, less "mechanical", more human touch and historical weight.
In addition to the solemn ceremony, there was also a warm screen of neighborhood mutual help, and the staff explained the meaning of the Bon Festival activities to young people/foreign tourists. It turns out that this custom has been around for hundreds of years in Hong Kong, and 30 neighborhoods insist on holding it every year to preserve this unique community culture.
