Complete Guide to Sengan-en in Kagoshima

Sengan-en: A Perfect Blend of Majestic Natural Scenery and Traditional Japanese Gardens
Absolutely stunning!

Sengan-en is located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and can be reached by car or city bus from downtown Kagoshima. This grand feudal lord's garden was built as a villa by the second lord of the Satsuma Domain, Shimazu Mitsuhisa, during the Edo period. It also served as a reception facility for high-ranking guests.

One of the unique features of Sengan-en is its design, which does not include large ponds or artificial hills. Instead, it incorporates the natural scenery of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima as part of the garden's landscape. Visitors can enjoy the harmonious blend of the garden's beauty with Kagoshima's natural wonders, offering a truly magnificent view and a deep appreciation of nature.

Stroll through the garden while admiring the breathtaking view of the Sakurajima volcano. Sengan-en is beautiful in all seasons, as different flowers bloom throughout the year. From early February to early April, the cherry blossom season offers a spectacular view of Sakurajima framed by cherry blossoms. In autumn, the "Chrysanthemum Festival" is held, showcasing around 15,000 colorful chrysanthemum flowers that adorn the garden in stunning beauty.

The guesthouse "Goten," which was used as a residence and reception hall, retains the strong essence of the Edo period. Walking through it allows visitors to experience the lifestyle of that era.

The garden also features a variety of restaurants and cafes. At "Okatei," located in the heart of the garden, you can savor Satsuma-style local cuisine made with carefully selected local ingredients, including traditional Kagoshima dishes.
