Kumamoto Castle is a must-see

Aside from seeing Kumamon, Kumamoto Castle is also a must-see when traveling to Kumamoto. Kumamoto Castle is renowned, ranked alongside Osaka Castle and Nagoya Castle as one of Japan's three most famous castles. Dating back to the Warring States Period, its construction began in 1601 by the renowned general Kato Kiyomasa. While severely damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, the castle tower was restored in 2021 and has become a symbol of recovery from the disaster. The castle grounds also boast numerous buildings worth visiting, each of which holds great historical value.
