#discoverchina Potala Palace is a stunning architectural and cultural landmark in Lhasa, Tibet. Perched at an altitude of 3,700 meters (12,100 feet) on Marpo Ri (Red Hill), it was historically the winter palace of the Dalai Lama and remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Key Highlights
• Architecture: A 13-story structure with over 1,000 rooms, golden roofs, chapels, and murals, blending Tibetan and Chinese styles.
• Red and White Palaces:
• White Palace – Former living quarters of the Dalai Lama, with assembly halls and government offices.
• Red Palace – Houses stupas of past Dalai Lamas and important Buddhist scriptures.
• Best Time to Visit: May–October (warmer weather, clearer views), but winter offers fewer tourists.
• Altitude Consideration: Due to high elevation, visitors are advised to acclimatize before climbing the palace’s 300+ steps.
