Mon Jam: A Heavenly Mountain Retreat with Cool Weather All Year Round

Just taking a deep breath here makes my heart feel instantly lighter.

"Mon Jam" is a name I've heard for a long time, but experiencing it firsthand made me understand why everyone falls in love with this place.

Start your day with a hot cup of coffee before leaving Chiang Mai city early in the morning. Drive along the winding roads towards Mae Rim, where the path becomes more curvy, but the roadside is lined with lush green trees. The crisp, cool air seeps in through the car window — the earthy scent mixed with the aroma of wood makes my heart race with every minute the car climbs higher up the mountain.

Upon reaching the Mon Jam viewpoint, a breathtaking panorama of overlapping mountain ranges stretches as far as the eye can see. The morning sunlight glistens on the mist hovering above the mountain peaks. A strong, cool breeze makes you hug yourself tightly — it's a chill that's not too cold but refreshingly invigorating.

Here, there are several viewpoints to enjoy, including a bamboo platform offering an unobstructed view of the mountains and a balcony extending out for perfect photos with the sea of mist. I climbed up to sit in a small wooden pavilion, taking deep breaths of the fresh air. The serene silence of the mountains is so enchanting that it feels like time slows down.

Around Mon Jam, there are several small coffee shops and restaurants. I chose one with a view of the mist rolling by and ordered a pot of hot tea. The steam from the tea and the mist from the mountains mingled together, creating a strangely warm image despite the cold weather.

If you visit during the late rainy season to early winter (around October to February), you'll witness fields of colorful flowers, including verbena, hydrangeas, and zinnias, blooming across the landscape. During my visit, the flowers were in full bloom. Tourists strolled around, smiling and taking photos amidst the light purple flowers contrasting with the clear blue sky. It was such a heartwarming scene that I wished I could freeze time.

For those who want to stay overnight, Mon Jam offers accommodations with million-dollar views, ranging from transparent dome tents where you can stargaze from your bed to small wooden houses perched on the hillside, waking up to a sea of mist in the morning. One night might not be enough.

Before heading back, stop by to buy fresh fruits from the locals, such as strawberries and organic vegetables from the Royal Project. The hill tribe villagers greet you with warm smiles, making you feel that this place is not just a "viewpoint" but a living community filled with smiles and genuine warmth.
