Okinawa, Japan | Naminoue Shrine—A vermilion sanctuary by the sea, blessed by dragon-mouthed water and a golden beast, a place of prayer overlooking Naminoue Beach

Naminoue Shrine is one of Naha's most iconic shrines. Perched on a rocky seaside overlooking the vast blue ocean, it stands like a watchful deity, protecting passing ships and island residents.

Upon approaching the shrine, the torii gates stand tall, separating the secular from the sacred. The temple's architecture is dignified, with vermilion beams and golden carvings complementing each other, and every detail reveals the exquisite craftsmanship of the craftsmen. Auspicious beasts adorning the exterior walls, their heads raised, leap into the clouds, symbolizing the warding off of evil and bringing in good fortune. The spring water gushing from the dragon's mouth at the Josui-tei offers visitors a chance to cleanse their hands and souls before entering the sacred realm.

Here, the Kumano Three Gods and other marine guardian deities are enshrined, a belief that dates back to the Ryukyu Kingdom era. For islanders, Naminoue Shrine is more than just a shrine; it serves as a spiritual connection between the sea and the earth.
