Eating Tree-Ripened Durians in Balik Pulau, Penang, Malaysia!!!

When the durian season arrives in the tropical lands near the equator, and the Indian Ocean breeze carries the fragrance of durians, hardcore durian lovers fly straight to the durian orchards of Balik Pulau in Penang, Malaysia, to savor tree-ripened durians and embark on a durian origin journey!

In the mountainous durian plantations of Balik Pulau, many descendants of Hokkien immigrants have cultivated durians for generations. This time, we visited Fuyuan Garden, owned by a "Durian King" of Hokkien descent and his "Durian Princes," along with over 400 durian trees aged 60+ years. Seeing the towering durian trees for the first time was astonishing—who knew they could grow so tall! Here, durians naturally ripen and fall from the trees. To collect them safely without damage, plastic nets are used to catch them. The taste of purely natural, tree-ripened durians is indescribably divine! With over 180 varieties—Mao Shan Wang, Black Thorn, Green Skin, Red Prawn, Mouse Durian, and many more—it’s a feast for the senses! The durian hills also boast rambutan, mangosteen, and papaya trees. But beware: while durians are delicious, overindulgence may lead to nosebleeds, as some claim. A local tradition involves drinking saltwater or coconut water from the durian shell after eating, said to counteract the durian’s "heatiness."

Immersed in this unique durian orchard, plucking, cracking, and eating fresh durians on the spot is an unforgettable sweet delight! So this summer durian season, fly to Malaysia for tree-ripened durians and experience Penang’s durian culinary adventure—it’s truly a durian love affair you won’t want to leave!
