🇺🇿Samarkand
Samarkand is a jewel of Uzbekistan, once a key location on the Silk Road.
The city is lined with beautiful, historic blue buildings,
creating a maze of blue.
I've seen similar architecture in the Middle East,
but Samarkand's blue has a unique depth, and it shines even more in the sunlight.
The stunning blue architecture of Samarkand 🏛️
📍 Registan Square ✨
This historic square is a symbol of Samarkand.
Home to three madrasas—Ulugh Beg Madrasah, Sher-Dor Madrasah, and Tilla-Kari Madrasah—I was awed by the magnificent blue tile decorations.
The nighttime illuminations were particularly magical, exuding a beauty completely different from daytime.
📍 Shah-i-Zinda 💎
This mausoleum complex features the most beautiful blue tile decorations!
The maze-like corridors of the mausoleum are lined with intricately decorated mosaics.
It felt like walking through a blue art gallery.
📍 Bibi-Khanym Mosque 🕌
The largest mosque in the Timurid Empire, it features a gigantic dome.
The architectural scale was astounding, and the intricate tile design was simply beautiful.
The blend of restored sections and sections that reflect the passage of time gave a sense of the weight of history.
📍 Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum 🏰
This is the site of Timur's tomb.
The gorgeous golden interior decorations contrasted beautifully with the blue exterior.
What I felt walking around Samarkand
✅ The blue architecture was truly breathtaking! The way the color changed with the light was beautiful.
✅ Not only were the historic buildings impressive, but the atmosphere of the markets and streets was also somehow exotic.
✅ The intricate tile decorations made it seem like art everywhere you looked.
✅ The Uzbek people were friendly, and I often found myself chatting up people as I walked.
Samarkand Food 🍽️
🍛 Plov
A typical Uzbek rice dish.
A dish made with lamb, carrots, and rice cooked with spices. It's simple yet flavorful.
Samarkand-style plov is particularly famous, characterized by its slightly larger rice portions.
🥟 Samsa
A light, pie-like snack similar to the Indian samosa.
Filled with meat or potatoes, it's perfect for a light snack.
☕ Uzbek Chai
Traditional Uzbek green tea.
Relaxing at a chaikhana (teahouse) is one of the joys of traveling.
Samarkand Impressions & Summary
✅ The beautiful blue architecture everywhere you walk makes you feel like you're in another world.
✅ The Registan Square and mausoleums are spectacular and enjoyable day or night.
✅ The food was simple yet delicious, and I was able to fully enjoy Uzbek culinary culture.
✅ In a city where history and art blend, I was able to experience the charm of the Silk Road.
Samarkand, which flourished as a crossroads on the Silk Road,
was truly the "Blue City," a beautiful blend of history and beauty.
