Recommendation Level: High
If you're visiting Hokkaido and exploring Sapporo, it's highly recommended to include the "Hill of the Buddha" as a must-visit attraction. Here's why it's recommended along with some visiting tips (bilingual in Chinese and English):
⸻
✅ Reasons for Recommendation
1. Fusion of Architecture and Landscape Art: Designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, the concept is to "reveal only the Buddha's head above the ground, sparking imagination."
2. Strong Visual Impact: From the outside, only the Buddha's head is visible above the hill. Upon entering the internal tunnel, an open-air hall reveals the 13.5-meter-tall Buddha statue against the sky, creating a stunning visual experience.
3. Seasonal Changes: In summer, the hill is covered with approximately 150,000 lavender plants, creating a beautiful composition of purple flower fields and the Buddha statue. In winter, the snow-covered landscape offers a different but equally captivating atmosphere.
4. Excellent Reviews and Peaceful Atmosphere: Visitors often describe it as "serene," "calming," and "worth visiting."
5. A "Short Escape" Option Outside Sapporo City: It's not too far from the city center, making it ideal for a half-day trip.

⚠️ Visiting Tips / Notes
• Transportation: From Sapporo city center, take the subway to Makomanai Station, then transfer to a bus (e.g., No. 108 or 106) that goes directly to the site. Note that bus schedules may be infrequent.
• Time: Allocate 1–2 hours for the visit. Some reviews suggest "an hour is enough," but taking your time to soak in the atmosphere and take photos is recommended.
• Admission Fee: There is an entrance fee for the Buddha hall (e.g., 300 yen) and parking fees.
• Seasonal Choice:
- Summer (mid to late July) offers the best views with the lavender fields in full bloom.
- Winter snow scenery provides a unique atmosphere, though the water garden may be closed.
• Gear Tips: In summer, bring a hat and sunscreen as UV rays can be strong, and the ground may be overgrown with flowers and grass. In winter, dress warmly depending on snow conditions.
• Photography: It's an excellent spot for photography. Note that the hall in front of the Buddha statue is open-air, allowing for dynamic lighting changes.
• Mindset Experience: Although located within a cemetery (Makomanai Takino Cemetery), the design leans more towards "art and contemplation" rather than a traditional tourist attraction.
