Until the late 20th century, this area served as a residential neighborhood. However, due to its low rent and convenient transportation, many artists moved in. In 2001, it was transformed into an art and creative district and was named after Tianzifang (田子方), a name derived from the 'Records of the Grand Historian' by the painter Sima Qian from the Warring States period. Since then, it has become popular among tourists and has developed into one of the most expensive and representative tourist spots in Shanghai. While various goods are sold in the old-style buildings, keep in mind that the narrow streets can become crowded and difficult to navigate at times.
