Tibet has always been on my bucket list, and visiting Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Shigatse was an experience beyond words. Founded in 1447, this historic monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, is a treasure trove of Tibetan culture, spirituality, and architectural grandeur.
As I walked through the monastery’s ancient gates, I was immediately captivated by the golden rooftops gleaming under the high-altitude sun. The air was thick with the scent of butter lamps, and the deep, resonant chants of monks echoed through the courtyards. One of the highlights was standing before the awe-inspiring Maitreya Buddha statue, towering at 26 meters—the largest of its kind in Tibet.
Beyond its spiritual aura, Tashi Lhunpo is a living monastery. Monks clad in crimson robes went about their daily rituals, debating scriptures in the traditional Tibetan way—passionate, animated, and full of energy. I even had the chance to exchange a few words with a young monk, who shared his life’s journey and devotion to Buddhist teachings.
The monastery also offers breathtaking views of Shigatse. Climbing to one of its higher vantage points, I gazed upon the sprawling city below, framed by distant mountain peaks. It was a moment of serenity, a reminder of Tibet’s timeless beauty.
If you ever find yourself in Tibet, Tashi Lhunpo is a must-visit. Whether you come for the history, the architecture, or the spiritual energy, this monastery will leave you with memories that linger long after you’ve left its sacred halls.
