Shirakawa-go is a small Japanese town that is relatively accessible when traveling to Japan via Toyama Airport or Nagoya Airport.
During my trip, I stayed near Takayama, close to Nagoya, and visited Shirakawa-go from there.
The roofs in Shirakawa-go are incredibly unique, known as "Gassho-zukuri." These roofs are designed this way because the area experiences heavy snowfall. They require maintenance every 30 to 40 years, which takes about two days to complete.
Inside the houses, there are shelves built into the roof structure.
