The National Palace Museum in Taipei is one of the world’s most significant repositories of Chinese art and culture. Established in 1965, it houses nearly 700,000 artifacts, many of which were relocated from Beijing’s Forbidden City during the Chinese Civil War to preserve them from conflict. The collection spans over 8,000 years of Chinese history, from Neolithic times to the modern era, featuring imperial treasures such as jade carvings, bronze vessels, calligraphy, paintings, and ceramics. Highlights include masterpieces like the Jadeite Cabbage and ancient ritual bronzes. The museum’s Southern Branch in Chiayi, opened in 2015, focuses on Asian art and fosters cultural exchange. Together, these institutions play a vital role in safeguarding and showcasing Chinese heritage.
