Climbing the 1,237 steps to Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua) is one of Krabi’s most breathtaking experiences — both literally and spiritually. The temple sits high above the lush jungle, offering panoramic views of limestone cliffs, emerald valleys, and the Andaman Sea beyond.
The temple gets its name from a tiger-shaped cave below, where monks once meditated among tiger footprints said to be imprinted in the stone. Today, it remains one of Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist sites, attracting both pilgrims and travelers seeking peace and perspective.
We went early, before 8 a.m., to avoid the intense heat and crowds. The climb is steep and challenging, but the serenity at the top is worth every step. A group of mischievous monkeys roam the path, so keep your belongings close — they will try to steal anything that catches their eye.
At the summit, we were greeted by an unexpected guardian — a black dog who barked fiercely at the monkeys when they got too close. It felt like a small miracle after such a climb. Standing beside the golden Buddha at the peak, the view stretched endlessly — a true reward for body and spirit.
