Excellent Mediterranean restaurant

By Alex T. |

Delicious, well-prepared Mediterranean food. The room at the back is excellent for private parties. The whole fish was a highlight.

Surprising Gem

By PAULINE L D |

We go to the 59/59 Theater a lot. Finally we have found a restaurant nearby that serves very good food for a reasonable price. We ordered a farro salad that was so tasty; a Baby Gem Caesar salad with a freshly made Caesar dressing; Rabbit Cacciatore that was better than mine; and for dessert Creme Caramel and Carrot Cake. The menu is extensive and eccletic. It was fresh quality food innovatively cooked and presented perfectly! Our server, Briana, was attentive and informative. The ambiance is lovely and relaxing. Now we know where to eat when we go to the 59/59 Theater! I look forward to a return visit.

High value for what you deliver

By Bruno Cota |

Although the dishes have a reasonable flavor, compared to restaurants in the neighborhood, this one has above average prices and much lower portions. Deadlines of around $40 are below the city average for restaurants of this level

Delicious kale Caesar salad

By Travelfam8 |

The kale salad and chicken baked under a brick were delicious. The service was just "ok." It took awhile for the waitress to come to our table. Bread is not brought to the table unless you order it. It's a great little place near Bloomingdales, but there's not much else in the area to choose from.

overpriced

By Howard R |

service was excellent, chicken ok and the appetizers pretty good- pink shrimp and octopus. however a smell from the bathroom was too strong.

Wonderful meal and wonderful service

By Elle O |

We celebrated our wedding anniversary at Amali and had an amazing experience. From start to finish, the restaurant was perfect. Reservations were confirmed by their owner James who is on site and working, with a wonderful staff, friendly hostess, knowledgeable servers like Corey? , and a top notch wine director named Michael. Salads to start with the freshest of tomatoes and cucumbers, and olive oil. Homemade pastas next cooked perfectly, followed by a delicious crispy skin salmon… and don't forget the cheesecake dessert! For anyone who enjoys wine and cuisine, and the combinations / pairings of both, Amali is a great choice for a romantic evening, dinner with friends, and even a special occasion. Looking forward to our next visit in Winter to drink some reds this time! Love it. Thank you!

Upper east side treasure

By Fredi728 |

Tucked away in a busy area this is a find for excellent food and nice atmosphere. While described as "mediterranian" in Zagat, it leans heavily toward Greek dishes and wines, yet covers the area. My wife and I both had seafood, she had an excellent fish and I a combination of pasta with a mixture of sea-creatures which was very tasty and a good ratio of seafood to pasta. Their chocolate cake is superb. At an early dinner it was very conversation friendly with very good service. The price is high, but lower than other good restaurants in this high-rent district.

Great restaurant in NYC

Really fine neighborhood gem

By ncarol |

Dined here our first night in Manhattan; chose it based on proximity, reviews, and website menus. Loved it! Chicken Under-A-Brick was the best my chicken husband EVER ate (cripy-crunchy outside and deliciously moist insid with great flavor), the chard appetizer with plums and crispy sweet potatoes (really!) was scrumptious. Good service and charming atmosphere. Recommend it for sure!

Nice place, good food

By Romanw871 |

I went for a business dinner with a larger group. It was served family style, we had to select 4 appetizers and 3 main courses. The interior looks good, service was friendly, they handled well a large group. Food was good to slightly above average. Good wine selection, staff seemed to favor and push (in non offensive way) for Greek wines. Well we went with our selection of Tempranillo and it was very good. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the price. Despite good service and good food I am finding it a bit pricey.

Terrific flavors, terrific staff, nice neighborhood restaurant

By doug100worth |

What nice people staff this restaurant and what terrific flavors. Dale had shrimp that had wonderful spices on them and I had octopus as an appetizer. Dale brought her own gluten free pasta and the chef used it to make a dish for her. I had chicken that had been cooked under a brick that was terrific. The restaurant is cozy and busy with a demographic tilted towards women around 40........though there are plenty of others. The thing is that it's noisy.........in a nice kind of way. It was our first time here even though they've been at this for 5 years and we live right across the street. Obviously, we'll be back.

Not bad!

By Geekontherun |

I found this on open table. The portions are not huge and it’s not cheap. That being said it is good. I had the lobster pasta. It was spicy and packed a punch! I ate the lemon poppyseed cake for desert. Yes it is dry and was served with a sour cream doll up which made it better. Overall food is good as is service. Portions are a bit small which is why I gave them a 4!

Excellent Mediterranean Dinner

By Kevin J |

Our first nice dinner of our trip, this was a fun little find. The atmosphere was very unique and the food was very good. My wife had the chicken under the brick, and I had a special ravioli that was nothing like I had eaten before in terms of pasta. We had a wonderful time here and would definitely come back.

Explosion of Different Flavors.

By Bill W |

This small Mediterranean restaurant is an amazing taste experience. The different flavors and tastes sensations are beyond my ability to express. I'll simply say that our foursome all had different appetizers, entrees, and desserts and we all agreed that it was an exceptional dining experience. In fact, we had some of the most unique flavor combinations in our desserts we could imagine, so save room. And Amali's sommelier helped us choose the perfect wine. If you live nearby, the great news is that they cater and provide banquet rooms for parties. Do it. A big bonus: sustainability is important, and Amali supports it.

A Lunch to remember!

By donald f |

A great selection of Salumi, Dry Cured Sausage, Cheese, Buffalo Mozzarella, with Warm Marinated Olives and toasted bread makes for a great appetizer for the table paired with one of many great red wines from their selection makes for a great lunch date!

Surprise

By Federico R |

I have been in this nice Restaurant for lunch yesterday with my wine agent in nyc. I have been really happy! The food is just great! Very particular, using high quality stuff and very creative! Dishes are not so big, and this for me is a quality! Staff is very nice and efficient. Excellent wine list!i will come back for sure to Amali.

An oasis in a gastronomic desert

By Andrew K |

I now know that there's a reason this Mediterranean restaurant fills up quickly for a weekday lunch: lots of vegetarian and gluten-free options, great wine list and service. Oh, and the neighborhood is otherwise a restaurant desert.

Terrible service, mediocre food, poor value

By Joel G |

This was a bad dining experience that is getting worse in retrospect. The servers were inattentive, standing around and talking while we were waiting to give someone our order. We wound up ordering drinks and our meal at the same time. Everything took longer than expected, including getting the check. My food was mediocre but my wife did enjoy her meal. But the prices were high, especially considering the quality of the meal and the service. In all, this was what I call a "TAGLA" - take a good look around (because we're not coming back!).

Great service, even better food!

By Rosa |

Food was really good. Met and exceeded expectations. Really lovely waiter, very kind and helpful. Will be coming back.

The loudest restaurant in NYC

By rkr727 |

The server called in sick due to lack of interest. Their whole fish was sold as something to be 'wait worthy', but was dry and over salted. Wine suggestions were meant to pad the bill. We asked for a "quiet" table, and instead of laughing us out of there (which I would have ultimately appreciated), the maitre d' put us next to the kitchen. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

Something for everyone

By Jangitak |

I was so pleasantly surprised at the options on the seemingly limited lunch menu. I had the day's special, kale salad, which was absolutely perfect, with apples and almonds. My husband had the almost spicy (middle east flavors) lamb burger and our friend had pasta bolognese which was simply delicious. There were good choices in wines by the glass. We opted for a Barbera from Lazio which was light enough for my salad and had just enough to carry the pasta. The coffee was really good and the service was excellent.

Enjoyable Experience

By Wanderer201161 |

Had a wonderful meal after theater. The chicken was exceptional. My friend raved about the halibut. It was a late reservation so there were only a couple more tables being served. Very attentive service! Highly recommend.

Top Notch

By SandBAtlanta |

We were in town for the marathon and wanted to grab some pasta before the big race. Luckily, Amali was near our hotel. This is such a cute little space and I definitely felt like we were in a "locals" spot. It seemed very homey to me, very warm and inviting. We had a cocktail and shared a salad and the octopus. We love octopus and have a favorite spot for it in Atlanta. Rarely do we find an octopus that's as good as ours at home, but Amali's was darn close. It was meaty, yet tender and had just the right amount of vinegar. It was excellent. S and I both had the pappardelle bolognese, which was delicious and authentic. I wanted to lick the bowl!! Gosh it was so good. Service was pretty good, prices are about what you'd expect in the city. Overall, it was the perfect dinner before the marathon.

good food,fair price,poor service

By 890RobertM890 |

We very much enjoyed the chicken and a Scallop meal. Caesar salad to begin was also good. Took awhile to get a drink. Main course slow to come out. We were going to theatre and had a 15% discount coupon. Waiter argued over discount after we showed him proof. We thought throughout meal that waiter had an attitude. We will try again .

Different food

By Bonnie H |

We stopped here for brunch on a Sunday and were delighted with the menu. It covered the vegetarian and GF needs of our group. The food was very tasty and the service was good. They were attentive and refilled glasses quickly without hovering. We sat in the back room which had a glass ceiling and was very bright. Very quiet space and just cozy.

Excellent Dinner

By PucksterColorado |

We went here pre-theatre when we couldn't get a reservation at a theatre-district restaurant. So glad this happened! This was a really delicious, creative, superb dinner. The staff was professional. A quite, quaint, smallish place that, if in the neighborhood, is well worth a visit.

One of my go to places for a great meal when I visit NYC

By jtt37 |

The ambiance is that of a local spot; you would probably walk by and not ever stop if you didn't know about this place, but I love the busy vibe and great food. The service was wonderful, too.

Disappointed!

By Harvey M |

I have had "Chicken Under A Brick" ($29) at other restaurants and it was usually very flavorful and moist. At this restaurant it has a nice flavor but it is not moist, leaving me disappointed with it. The point of putting it under a brick is to accomplish something much different than the usual chicken dish, in my opinion, that was not accomplished.

Be Aware of the Market Price and Special

By Nikita W |

The atmosphere of the restaurant is good but the food is so so. The price is so expensive. We ordered the special dish that the waitress recommended but the price came out on the bill for that ONE fish was $85. She told us the price was $36 which she explained later that the price was for the other fish which was smaller. No wonder she kept pushing us for the red snapper which she said we could share. She didn't tell us it was $36 per pound and plus $10 for the salt bake. And she recommended us to get some appetizers to start with while waiting for the the fish which takes about 45 mins. We listened to her but the appetizers came very late and the fish was huge. We could only finish 1/4 of the fish and it wasn't taste good. We will not return to this restaurant.

Great menu and wine list!

By MariaT1971 |

Decided to try this great little place after it was listed in "38 Essential New York Restaurants for Summer 2016" and glad we did. Menu is fresh and innovative and described as "Mediterranean". Approachable and broad wine list. Attentive service. Even though this place is on the small side (typical of NYC neighborhood restaurants) it never felt cramped or that patrons were sitting on top of one another. Glad we gave it a try!!

My favorite!

By Andrea S |

I have been to Amali on each of my recent trips to the city and still overwhelming impressed! Cozy and crisp atmosphere, good service and very fresh, perfectly done food. Their chicken cooked under a brick is outstanding as well as the homemade pasta. The salads taste like they were just picked from the garden and although the menu is not huge, there is something for everyone. As a former restaurant critic, I would give them a perfect score!

Great Pre-Theater before going to 59E59

By osheajimm |

We had tickets for a show at 59E59, so I needed a restaurant to meet my mother-in-law that was close. This fit the bill nicely as it was a 7PM show, so we met at 5.30 which was quiet! Service was really good and the sea scallops were awesome.

Great Business Lunch

By nininnineye |

The food was exceptional and the atmosphere was bright and airy. Service was fast, which was perfect for a business lunch.

Wonderful food & service

By debbieginmd |

Charming restaurant near Park Ave and 60th Street. The service was outstanding and the food delicious. I had a saffron pasta with rock shrimp, while my husband had fish. We ate every bite. This was a great dining experience!

Not to be missed!

By Joe G |

We had the best evening at Amali with a friend from out of town. The food was excellent, the service excellent; friendly, knowledgeable, helpful & not overbearing. The pasta was cooked perfectly & the sauces amazing & delicious. We would highly recommend Amali!

Dinner

Many of the menu dishes were not available. Poor service. Very disappointed with the place. The food very standard

Something different and delicious

By Rita E |

Wonderful menu choices with super fresh ingredients, thoughtfully combined. You can feel good about stepping outside your normal eating boundaries without thinking you've gone to Weirdville. Really interesting wine list and other drinks! Such pleasant and efficient service. Terrific value in NYC.

Horrible service

By ajaiswal |

Came here thinking of getting dinner as a walk-in. We were told it’s an hour wait since we didn’t have reservations. Not a problem so we put our name down and grabbed couple of glasses of wine at the bar and also ordered a small appetizer. The Burrata we ordered was great. As we continued to wait, after over an hour and a half we were still never told our table was ready. Never got a text. I saw empty tables that was open for over 45 minutes that could’ve seated us. The hostess never came to the bar and advised us of the status for our table. Staff was very rude. On top of that the bartender told us next time to have reservations before coming! It’s unfortunate that we didn’t get to have dinner. Heard many nice things about this place.

Great dinner!

By Alician S |

Really had a great time here. The food was so delicious and the atmosphere was so much fun. Large portions and lots of gluten free options. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a less touristy option.

Needs improvemwnt

By Cbass03 |

We went there with a group of friends.. the atmosphere is great. However, the food was very pricey and there were several dishes they had 'run out of'. My dish was very poor.. but my wife said her halibut was delicious. Place needs work, but with some improvements of the menu could be a great restaurant.

November 2017

By theistraci |

Amali has a great atmosphere. Felt very European. The wait staff was attentive. Wine by the bottle was pricey than I am used to but it is NYC. We had fish for the table packed and baked in salt. So Delois but also NYC prices. An appetizer of roasted vegetables with pomegranate seeds and apples was a great pick to start the meal. We also tried the chicken under the brick. It was very good. One in our party had the pasta and said it was great. All in all it was a wonderful dining experience.

A real surprise

By lipstickpoodle |

I really enjoyed my lunch at Amali. James, the owner could not of been more gracious or helpful. Service was perfect and and the food was delicious. We were a table of 6. Everyone was very happy. I had the caesar salad, and it was quite delicious and unique. We had mozzarella and a delicious toasted tuscan bread as a complimentary appetizer, that was much appreciated. I will definitively eat there again. Our server was very beautiful and sweet, which always makes the experience better. There is a special private back room with skylight. Ask for it. Genuinely, Seriously, Really Good

By SanFranciscoGuy634 |

Amali is just outstanding. We were in town and wanted to eat at someplace different. We found Amali and walked there on a rainy night wondering if it would prove to be good and worth the slosh in the wet. Wow. We had a great meal. Personally I really enjoy the "small plate" style of eating since I get bored easily and prefer lots of different temptations all at once. The cuisine is a mix from the Mediterranean, and that includes much more than just the old reliables, Italy and France. The dishes are beautifully prepared, fresh, and full of intriguing flavors. The menu is the opposite of boring. It is a list of delights that tempt you to order everything. I understand that it changes frequently. Terrific! Interesting wines too. We will be back soon.

Fabulous Greek/Mediterranean

By Lscottie |

Wonderful place. Great ambiance, personal service. Greek/Mediterranean menu. Servers can answers questions and guide you. So many wonderful items! Creative cocktail menu and strong wine list. We loved the Greek wine we had! Really worth a trip.

Good Customer Service Recovery, and then not so much...

By MTR879 |

My friend and I had a reservation here this past weekend. When we showed up for the reservation, the table was not yet ready for us, so we had a drink at the bar. 30-45 minutes later, they were finally ready to sit us down. As the hostess began to lead us towards the back of the restaurant, I already did not like where this was going....As we sat down, the first thing I noticed was the frigid room temperature and the AC blowing right onto our necks. As the hostess approached, we asked her to please lower the AC. Upon her return thereafter, she informed us that the AC was indeed lowered. Ummm...I think not. It was still blowing onto our necks, and at this point we asked to please be reseated in the main dining room. The hostess agreed, and sat us at a very nice booth, adding on complementary glasses of champagne for the inconvenience. Great service recovery right there! Thank you hostess! We asked our waiter for a sommelier to help us choose a wine, but the waiter suggested he can assist us with a recommendation. We asked for something not too acidic, and for a lighter rose (something in the area of the Whispering Angel but not as pricey). He brought back a $44 bottle that tasted awful, but at this point we did not want to complain given all the things that have already happened. The rose was a weird-pink color, and clearly not of quality. If someone asks for a sommelier...please send one next time. After that, the waiter kept coming back and asking if we were done with our food, when we were not. He must have had to come back 2 more times, when we finally said yes, PLEASE take our plates away. Waiting for the check took forever, and I finally had to get up and ask the waiter to provide us with the check please.

Rehearsal Dinner Experience

By Jessica M |

Visited here a few weeks ago for a rehearsal dinner. I am not from NYC and was expecting a delicious dinner and night out. The food was relatively good and the wine was poured heavily which was great! I was in the wedding party and showed up early to help get everything set up. Overall I would say that while the food and atmosphere was beautiful the staff did not seem all that helpful. The microphone did not work which was not good when I was having to give my speech and for some reason it was hot hot hot in the upstairs room. I would give this place between 2 to 3 stars if there was that option.

Amazing Greek Food!

By Connie Stone |

Visited this Greek restaurant with friends and it was an unforgettable experience! There was also an extensive list of wines to pick from.

Service and food quality

By Priscila M |

its a great restaurant, has great ambiamce and amazing food. The chicken under brick is one of my favorites along with their home made sodas. Its a small restaurant, everytime I've been was busy and everyone seemed to be happy. Every time I go to NYC I go to Amali and recommend it to all my friends and family members. You should try :)

Avoid avoid if you go restaurants for good food and service -- but read my review.

By Forwardwego888 |

Ahh where do I start?? First service sucks. Clueless and aggressive waiters that try to hurry you along. But the food? Quite miserable. The mezze is really heavy and sort of tasteless -- so many other Mediterranean restaurants you can go. As to the main meal I don't know who cooks but it was downright inedible. We ordered the pasta with clams -- I have never had something totally seeped in oil -- could only have two bites and yuck! My fiend had the chicken dish and it was dry and over cooked. Seriously I can't imagine why this restaurant was as full as it was. If you like food and have taste this place is not for you. Oh and beware they have small print (which you can't see in dim light) that they automatically add 18.5% to the bill. If it's automatic why not raise prices by that amount and then say "All in, European style prices no tipping please" But nooo they have to hoodwink you.

How did I walk by it all these years?

By Charles B |

We needed a place to meet with two out-of-town couples for lunch that was convenient to all. After "googling" around we found the reviews for this restaurant and it sounded perfect - though one review said "loud". Given that we wanted to talk and hear and being old..er- we contacted the restaurant with our need and misgiving. Immediately we got a very nice reply from the owner reassuring us. At the appointed time we showed up and were directed to a table in the very pleasant skylight room - which as "advertised" was quieter than the front (bar) room. When we sat down and given menus we were also "plied" with a complimentary glass of prosecco and a visit from the owner. Actually, we needed neither, but both were warmly and gratefully received. The menu was a kind of Greek. "Kind of" because though based on Greek food it took a contemporary and eclectic turn. Well, the food was terrific. Interesting, but not too much so. A small plate of olives - served in a kind of mini-tureen, we warm, something in my many years of eating Greek and Middle-Eastern food, I never experienced. We had mostly various salads, though we also had octopus and more traditional Greek small plates. In fact everything was great. And the desserts..... fabulous. Overall, it was a perfect dining experience if you like tasty, good, interesting food. Like a pleasant, comfortable, and warm ambiance. And like good service overseen by an interested and "present" host. Now to the title of this review: My dentist is on the next block. And I walk down this street at least twice a year (back and forth). And somehow I never noticed this particular restaurant. Perhaps the sign is too subtle. The lovely wood screen on the street too concealing of the small outdoor seating area and glass wall behind. In any case, now that I've tried it, it has to be a "go to" restaurant.

very nice, nothing to rave about

By sanmerle |

With all the wonderful restaurants on the East Side, I cannot understand why the. Four. Seasons Hotel would so highly recommend this restaurant. Went for lunch, no atmosphere and few people. Service was nice but not exceptional. Waiter did not seem enthusiastic or knowledgeable. The lamb burger was delicious but I had that for lack of finding something else to eat. my husband had the very simply prepared salmon, nothing special. If you are looking for charming or atmosphere, this is not it, seemed very corporate. Small menu, overall good food but not anything to remember.

Great Creative Mediterranean Food on UES

By drosen85 |

We had a business dinner last week at Amali and loved it. The restaurant has a similar atmosphere of many places on the Upper East Side -- step down, bar in front, buzzing tables further back. But unlike many of the restaurants, this was superb from beginning to end. We started with a great bottle of wine suggested by our waitress -- she really knew the list and a charcuterie that paired extremely well. Moved on to entrees. We all chose differently and everyone was extremely happy, including a couple of vegetarians who had choice of several entrees. I personally had a pork rib dish that was Greek in style and flavor and such an interesting alternative to BBQ. It was great. Overall, a great dinner.

Do not get banished to the back room

By Irv D |

We recently went to Amali on Saturday Night and were pleasantly surprised to find a cool looking restaurant, but that was only a classic bait and switch. We had a reservation but the hostess sat us in the back room. My wife asked if there was room in the front (after passing open tables) and she said no. The back room is a pedestrian looking room with no vibe. We subsequently saw parties coming in and asking the hostess if they could have a room in the front and she said sure! The food was good, but if you are thinking about ordering wine, think again. The wines by the glass average about $16 a glass for very inexpensive cheap wine. The wines by the bottle are marked up 4-6 times retail. Stay away!

Overpriced

By ElisaR916 |

I though the food was good and I liked the ambiance but I found the portions to be small and overpriced.

Well Done!

By Mark S |

Really good food, professional but relaxed service all in a very comfortable setting!! What else can you ask for? And, the acoustics are so good, you can actually carry on a conversation when its crowded!! The food from the appetizers through dessert were all very good and the menu offers varied, unique selections. We will definitely come back!

Still one of my favorite little hidden places

By Jennifer C |

Its a bit of a walk for the theater crowd...but a nice way to build up an appetite for their amazing food. We made pre-theater reservations and had no issue making our 8pm show. We ordered the grilled octopus, the bolognese and the duck. And of course the roasted broccoli is my raison d'etre for dining here. They also presented us with the roasted brussell sprouts on the house and they were amazing as well. The Somm helped us with our wine selection. Service was non-formal, friendly and efficient as always. This is a small space but there is no sense of a crowd - just a little cozy place to enjoy great food.

Great for Rehearsal Dinner or Just a Night Out

By Denny K |

We reserved the upstairs private room for a rehearsal dinner on 10-10-14. The food was delicious and the service superb! There was a variety of seating options--long tables that were great for friends, families and meeting others coming to the event. There are also 4-top and 6-top tables upstairs as well. The dinner included great choices of both red and white wine nicely paired with the food as well as champagne for toasting the bride and groom. The meal was served semi-family style--assorted olives and several salads to be passed and shared as well as the side dishes (broccoli and out of sight polenta). Our entrees were the brick chicken and the grilled beef. Both were very good, with the most votes going to the chicken (moist, tender and really well seasoned). A light dessert and coffee also were served at the end of the meal. If you are looking for a very comfortable, casual dinner spot with great food, I highly recommend Amali.

Tasty

By Roddies04 |

Tasty and fresh. The food is meant to be shared and arrives when ready. That said with my basic knowledge of cooking times it did seem a little random. The drinks came quickly and it seemed a lot longer for the food to arrive. It could have been a little quicker a sale does not take long to make.

Do Not Come Hungry...And Be Ready for the Switch'n Bait!

By Amiel M |

Our daughter picked the restaurant based on the menu she saw on their website. The seven of us get handed a Prix Fixe menu that had little to nothing to do with the online menu. Waitress informs us that the prix fixe is mandatory for parties of 8 and more people AND that they "must have not yet updated the online menu" because they work with sustainable, in-season, blablabla vendors. OK. So upon being told that we were seven, we are brought the "regular" menu which, again, bears little to no resemblance to the advertised menu. Portions are minuscule... almost comically small... reminds you of the often-ridiculed "nouvelle cuisine" of the 1980s. Well prepared, yes, but hardly worth the absurd prices.... $50 for a handful of pasta? $40 for a risotto? Come on... Yes, factor the "savoir-faire", the overhead and profit, but the raw materials are... pasta and rice.... similar argument could be made for many of the dishes. Dinner ended and everybody left hungry. Guess we would have had to spend close to a cool K to feel like we had a real meal. But hey! more power to the restaurateurs, because as long as there are snobby, pretentious New Yorkers, there will be restaurants like Amali willing and ready to take their money.

Nice, neighborhood restaurant

By rodgernm |

We went for dinner. We had excellent service. The food was excellent. Grilled octopus and brick chicken were stand outs. Dessert was incredible. Lovely setting, but it gets loud. Portions were pretty good, but drinks were pricey. (Not unusual for midtown)

Attractive but a certain deception

By michfr132807 |

The glass of red wine was warm, the entree (pasta del day) was not so tasty than expected with rather small portion with a ice cream and a total of 52 $ . Really expensive

Awesome Urban Space Street Food

By pasqua07 |

Amali set up an awesome street side setting in the Garment District. Food made on the spot. My daughter enjoyed a fresh and tasty pork gyro! Hope to see more of these.

Free corkage policy is deceptive. That is the reason for my poor rating.

By Susan M |

We brought a very nice California wine. We reviewed the corkage policy on the restaurant's website beforehand. We had purchased the wine directly from a small California vineyard. The wine is not available locally. We did not e-mail any questions before our reservation, because the corkage description seemed self-explanatory. However, the sommelier immediately said our wine was ineligible for free corkage. She left us to look it up as we sat at our table. And triumphantly she returned to say that "it was available in the tri-state area". She said we should have phoned or e-mailed her 24 hours ahead of our reservation, which is not stated in the restaurant's policy. Well, it was a very rainy night, we made a last minute reservation, we live 4 blocks away, and we have been going to this restaurant for many years. So, we decided not to dine there. It was a miserable experience. We left with our unopened bottle. So, I am suggesting that no matter the quality of the food, the sommelier's attitude left much to be desired.

Delightful, Fresh, Delicious, Near Bloomingdale's

By SanFranciscoGuy634 |

We have eaten at Amali and its previous incarnations a number of times over the years. It combines really good food - on a recent visit we opted to share a collection of smaller plates on a recent visit. The portions are generous and the service is excellent. Good bar and wine selection. The obligatory "craft cocktail" choices. Somehow everything seems to come together at Amali. Words like "fresh" and "delightful" and "relaxing" come to mind in a way that they don't always at other New York restaurants. Amali is worth seeking out. It's just down the street from Bloomingdale's. You can shop and then drop into Amali to rejuvenate. You will be pleased you did.

Watch out for the dinner check--they already charge 19% then expect you to tip again

Soft shell crab heaven!

By Peterholtdunn |

As we were in NYC for some serious theatre-going, we only had one night where we could truly enjoy dinner. And rather than have our local friend introduce us to a restaurant of his choosing, we thought that all three of us could discover a new eatery. And so it was that we lucked upon this east-side place that from the moment we walked in, definitely had a buzz to it. Although the front of the restaurant was full, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the rear was considerably less noisy, at least to begin with. For mains, two of us had the duck ( excellent ), while I had the soft shell crab, which I would opine was the best I had ever had!

Inventive Greek Mediterranean (farm to table) 🥘

By Deesha Misra |

I stopped by Amali for a nice glass of wine post dinner🍷. They had so many amazing options to pick from. The ambiance was amazing whether you’re with a group of friends or want to enjoy a nice glass with a book at the bar. The customer service was incredible even though they were packed. I simply had to return and was surprised by so many inventive and delicious dishes. The ingredients were so fresh and the combinations so unique. I had a lovely time and will be sure to return.

Best chef in New York

By Michelle T |

We booked a large (9 people) group at Amali. The food was absolutely amazing. We tried everything from the hummus to pasta to steak to desserts. The service was great too. We wanted to give our compliments to the chef, and Chef Rachael came out to meet us. She's incredibly talented. Bravo!

Very Good Food but Very Slow Service and Irritating Attitude

By silverandbluedog |

Based on the food Amali served us at our $800 dinner for four (including a handful of cocktails but no wine) this restaurant would deserve a 4 or 5 rating. There is a vibe I don’t care for at Amali, however, in which the restaurant appears to be run not for the delight of its customers but, rather, for the convenience of its management. We arrived for a 6:30 pm reservation and the place was empty. We were asked if we wanted to order cocktails, which we did, and along with our drink orders we asked if we could please start with two appetizers for the table (spicy feta and parsnip hummus) while we read the rest of the menu. No, we were told, we had to give the kitchen our entire order all at once. So we held off on ordering, and then they delivered our cocktails, which appeared to be like 85% ice. Then they pushed the $230 Tomahawk steak for two (and got one order for that from my wife and older son), and we eventually gave them our entire order—but all the while I was starving. Then the kitchen was slow, slow slow—too slow to have insisted that we couldn’t order anything immediately upon our arrival. The spicy feta and parsnip were excellent, the grilled octopus good. I ordered the grilled lamb chops with a side of potatoes, but the restaurant is so dark I couldn’t visually differentiate between the meat of the lamb, the fat of the lamb or the potatoes. The meat of the lamb was good, but it bothered me that I couldn’t see what I was eating. By this time the restaurant had filled up, and the waitstaff kind of abandoned us. After waiting for twenty minutes, they brought us a dessert menu, and twenty minutes later they took our dessert order, and another twenty minutes later they brought our desserts. At this point I asked for a check, and it was like 30 minutes more until they brought the check. My crème brûlée was excellent, but it didn’t make up for the exhaustion I felt from the slow service. Net, net, our experience was a downer.

Wonderful Find. Tucked in but well worth the search

By MarkO95 |

Excellent service. Very nice lunch menu. Delicious dishes, with wonderful flavor and just the right portions. Very reasonably priced.

food great, but noise incredible

By nicolas s |

maybe it was an unlucky day but the noise level was unbelievable . the food very good, notably the chicken , and the salad. a pity we would have enjoyed better with ear blockers

Great New Find

By Michael B |

Excellent food. Sort of Mediterranean with an Italian twist. Nice salad to start, then lamb and pasta both well seasoned and delicious. Look forward to returning.

Excellent Food ... Excellent Atmosphere

By Raymond M |

This restaurant has superb food. We had the Lamb Ragoti and the Brick-Pressed Chicken. Both were extremely flavorful. Our server was excellent and very attentive. If you are looking for less noisy and more intimate meal, ask to be seated in the back room. It is away from commotion of the main dining room.

Fresh Greek Fare

Went here with some friends for a going away party. The interior was beautiful and modern yet cozy. The food (Cos Salad, Lemon Potatoes, and Grilled Shrimp) was delicious and tasted fresh. Great wine list also. Will be coming back soon.

An off night perhaps...

By TheEnglishGentleman |

I have heard great things about this Mediterranean farm to table restaurant. The appetizers, service and wine were fine, but the main courses where definitely ones to forget. Both my colleagues pork belly and my steak where more fat than flavor. I firmly believe on giving a restaurant another change and hope my next visit (next week) proves that our previously poor main courses were merely an off night!!

Tasty food but overpriced for the quantity

By Irina B |

I am very torn with Amali, because on one hand, the food was great but on the other hand, I left feeling a bit cheated when it came to the actual bill. I organized a dinner at Amali as a business dinner for 8 people. We were only given an option of the tasting menu at $65/per person. I thought this was very economical (especially for NYC). With a budget of $125pp, I felt we would be well under in the total bill. Boy was I wrong! The tasting menu gave a choice of four appetizers and three entrees to be served for the table. At the time of ordering, or server kept asking us to change our selections. At the time I thought nothing of it. For example: we chose Fall Crostini as one of our appetizers. He informed us that it would be a dish that could not be easily shared. A little confused here - if we are paying a per person fee, why wouldn't the kitchen make enough crostini for each person? He suggested we order a Burrata di Campagna instead, which we agreed on. Instead of a salad, he suggested we order the Spanish Octopus, which he said was great! We also agreed. I should have been paying attention to the menu, but I was not, so perhaps it is my fault for not noticing that each dish he suggested had a surcharge of +$5pp. In addition, we ordered the Salt baked whole fish which had the $15pp and the Dayboat Scallops, that also had a surcharge. In combination with wines (the wine list is heavily sprinkled with Greek wines, which are not that great IMHO) and cheapest wine bottle being $60, sparkling water and some coffees we ended up spending $140per person before tax and tip. Our food portion of the bill ended up being $95pp after all the surcharges. Looking at the menu, 6 dishes have a surcharge. Why not make the menu more expensive and not charge this ridiculous surcharge to begin with? What upset me the most, however, was the amount of food served. There really was barely enough to go around for the 8 of us. For example, the fish came as just one fish to be shared between 8 adults (6 of them men). What if it was only 6 of us or 10 - would it still be the same one fish? For appetizers, there was only one plate of each to be shared. I think if you are paying a per person fee, there should be more than enough food to go around. In fact, looking at the regular menu, I could have ordered an appetizer, entree and dessert all to myself for that same price. I would like to end on a positive note - the food was delicious! Everything we ordered, especially the octopus was cooked to perfection. The fish baked in salt was brought out to the table to be presented. It was moist and perfect. I am torn weather I would recommend Amali. The food and ambiance was great, but I think the large party set up is a bit of a scam.

Good but room for improvement

By traveltime841 |

Decided to try dinner here based on the online reviews, and all in all was glad to try it. The wines by the glass were fairly expensive, so that was not the best start. Apps were pretty good, no complaints there. Then the best part of the meal - the rabbit dinner! It was my first time trying rabbit, and it was well prepared as a hearty dish (sort of tastes like chicken). Service was mostly good, but took way too long to get the check. Would consider going back, particularly if the rabbit dinner was on the menu

TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT, WAYYYYY OVERRATED- AVOID

By emmytravels |

We went on a sunday. they were not crowded. The waiter had the personality of a wooden spoon. The menu had hardly any options. All the food we ordered was not worth an iota of praise. The salad was mediocre. The dip was so so. The waiter forgot all the accompaniments to the dish. had to be reminded twice. The burger was definitely the worst most flavorless i have had in 10 years. whats the fuss about this restaurant. I think they give commisions to hotel concierges to recommend them. save your time and money go somewhere else. No ambiance worth talking about. OVER HYPED and over expensive

Deja Vu

By PAULINE L D |

I revisted Amali at the end of June and once again had a very positive experience! Joseph's service was excellent! The Baby Gem Caesar was fresh and delicious. The Grilled Quail was perfectly cooked and very tasty. The accompanying grilled broccoli rappi could have been cooked more and the stems peeled so it is not stringy. Yes, I peel the stems of rappi when I cook it. However, this is a small detail considering the overall quality of this restaurant! I will return again!

Way overrated

By Sharyn41 |

This restaurant came highly recommend so it was especially disappointing that our experience was very mediocre. The food was OK. Portions were small and the selection was limited. Price did not reflect this. The service was appalling (and the restaurant was less than half full when we were there). I would not recommend this restaurant at all

Superb!

By widad11 |

Great food, excellent service, and a casualish atmosphere make this a great place for dinner before Carnegie. But leave time for dessert...they're worth it.

On the lamb.....

By M M |

Arrived a few minutes early for my party--nice greeting, and waited at the bar. Menu was diverse--and usually order fish, but the wait-staff did not know detail about the two fish featured on the lunch muni--except that it was 'wild'..... We opted for the lamb burgers--delectable and sumptuous. Would like to return and try other orders upon the menu.

Gem of restaurant - outstanding menu and execution with warm service

By jonfweber |

Spectacular food - everything we ordered was A+. Attentive service with team approach. Everyone on the wait staff was there to help. We particularly enjoyed the sunchokes, feta appetizer, branzino, gem salad and spinach. Really friendly and accommodating with zero attitude. Will definitely come back

What a find!

By Anthony B |

I have been travelling to New York on business for almost 26 years and recently met up with relatives who live there who recommended we dine at Amali as they wanted to try it out. My sister-in-law has some serious food allergies which make dining out a challenge but the staff could not have been more accommodating; they showed good knowledge of the dishes available and with the chef were able to come up with some excellent options for her. The food was delicious, well presented and of very generous portions, so you may want to consider sharing some of the starters or main courses. The atmosphere is cosy and intimate, yet relaxed and unpretentious. The prices are fairly typical for New York or any major city. I will certainly be returning as this is now one of my favourites and one of the best dining experiences I have had both in terms of food quality and service in all my years of visiting the Big Apple!

Food with attention to detail

By KANewYork |

This is a great restaurant. Its decorated in a simple manner- it might evoke the feeling of eating at a chic farm table. The food is delicious and you cane see there is a lot of attention that goes into the preparation and plating. Pleasant, friendly staff.

Delicious!

By KANewYork |

Very unassuming with a minimalist facade. Went without a reservation, but got a table. Nice seating area in the back with a skylight. Friendly waitstaff. Octopus was delicious! The heirloom tomato salad with crunchy toasted bread was very fresh. Also loved the roasted pepper dip with pita bread.

Overrated. Very expensive

By Jymi |

I liked the food a lot at Amali. But I would qualify the restaurant as good neighborhood Italian restaurant... with 1 Star Michelin prices. I ordered a regular quinoa salad. Portion was very small... price $19. Added a (very small) piece of salmon and the bill came with an additional $22 for the salmon alone. Are you kidding me?!?!? I complained and the waitress didn’t even come and explain. Unacceptable. Not recommended.

Friendly & Fresh Mediterranean Midtown Gem

By Dana M |

Only midtown restaurant that came up when I googled farm-to-table, this little place did way more than live up to that description. After being greeted by the host & general manager and attentive bartender, I ordered the dry rose he recommended and snacked on the flavorful crispy wafers provided. The best was yet to come. I've eaten octopus all over the world but have never had any so tender and flavorful! Cooked slowly for hours then seasoned and grilled until charred was the explanation offered by the GM for its quality. Even the roasted broccoli w pine nuts was exceptional. Lots of small plates, charcuterie & entrees to choose from

Cosy place

By Emma717 |

We went here for dinner on New Years eve. Tried to get in touch with them when we booked the table in september to ask if they had a special menu for New Year's (special prices) but they didn't answer us. One day before we got to know that they had a pre-fixed menu for New Years which was 90 dollars + beverage tips etc. = It turned out to be a bit more expensive then we expected. BUT it was a very cosy place, friendly staff and good food.

Delightful discovery

By Bob S |

We wandered in last Saturday not knowing anything about the restaurant. What a welcoming staff and the food was delicious Mediterranean fare. Very fresh.

Order the Duck

By Foodielicious2 |

We ordered duck, fish and Lamb and Ricotta Pasta. The duck was the best by far. Just perfectly prepared. The others were good. We did not order wine; I thought their wine list was a bit odd. It was huge but nothing we wanted and so we ordered nice cocktails instead. I had their version of a a Negroni. The restaurant was a bit dark and cramped, not unusual for NYC. Service was ok.

Fixed menu work dinner

By Devendra R |

A set menu for this work dinner consisted of mezze, appetizer, main course and dessert. As vegan enjoyed the mezze course of spicy kafteri dip with grilled pita followed by fresh green salad. The main course was disappointing with the spaghetti with tomato sauce pretty tasteless. The desert of red berries was lovely.

Menu disappointing

By iris f |

We were there but the menu in the window had very little that appealed to me. We walked down the street to Isle of Capri and had a delicious Italian dinner.

Delicious, efficient for pre-theater

By wws68 |

We very much enjoyed our early-evening visit before a 7:15 curtain at 59E59. Ricotta toast, house-made pasta, and an enormous half-chicken 'under a brick' were all very good. Our waiter's description of a Greek white in the by-the-glass section was right on the money. At this hour there were several large after-work parties going on, so we can see how it could get noisy, but half-full it was fine.

A good time was had by all.

By Steve K |

We had a great time at Amali. Our foursome enjoyed terrific wine, Greek cuisine, and a lively atmosphere. Nestled in the sweet spot of New York department stores--equidistant from Bloomingdale's, Bergdorf's and Barney's--Amali's sustainable Mediterranean cuisine stands the test of the city's most discerning diners, all while hewing to the Mediterranean diet which their literature vows to maintain. While will definitely be back.

Great Wine Dinner

By WC8882013 |

Hosted my wife's 50th birthday party there. coordinated the wine with Frankie who ok'd selections from my cellar. They did a great job with the wine service - decanting the bottles and bringing new stemware with each wine. Had party of 10 people and ordered off the menu for the table. Everything was excellent.

Wonderful wedding

By Jan H |

We came here for lunch after my daughter's small intimate wedding at Christchurch, just over the road on Park Avenue. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and attentive, and the food was absolutely delicious. We had a room at the back of the restaurant which was just the right size for 12 of us. It was an informal lunch, with the food set on the table for us to help ourselves, but there was always someone there to check that we had everything we needed, and to serve wine. We had salmon and beef, and the most delicious broccoli I've ever tasted. The cake was also dessert, and whilst it didn't sound incredibly exciting, lemon meringue cake, it was superb. Would thoroughly recommend this restaurant, and look forward to returning on our next visit to NY. One thing I would change, nothing to do with the food, is the tiled floor in the room, pretty ugly and the rest of the decor was nice.

Great brunch place with a wonderful wine list!

By James C |

My wife and I went to Amali for Sunday brunch while on a weekend visit to New York. We'd found the place through a recommendation on a foodie blog, and chose it because we love Mediterranean food. Amali exceeded our expectations. It has a nice relaxed vibe and our server could not have been more attentive or helpful. I was interested in trying one of their Greek white wines, and she recommended an Assyrtiko — even offering us a complimentary glass to make sure we liked it. Not only was it excellent but it perfectly paired with the food, which she also guided us through. We particularly liked the grilled Marguez sausage (homemade by the chef that day) and the grilled Portuguese octopus. Simply put, we had a wonderful meal that put a lovely accent point on a romantic getaway weekend.

Pleasant dinner

By TRyana |

We had a nice dinner at Amali. We were seated in the back room which was quiet but a little dark (could hardly see what was on my plate). We had labneh and sweet potatoes as appetizers and they were both very tasty. For the main course we tried different dishes: scallops, rabbit and salmon. Rabbit was delicious, but scallops were a little too salty and dry for my taste. House gelato was great! The service was very good, we just waited a little too long for the appetizers to come but everything else was well timed. We had a very nice dinner and I would like to come back and try other dishes.

Authentic Greek Food!

By Esther |

I loved the interior design of the restaurant! It was very classy and modern - perfect for a date! The food was very delicious as well. I would recommend the chicken souvlaki along with the Baklava.

A Neighborhood Favorite

By Me5375 |

Amali is one of our favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. Food is exceptional and constantly changing so it's easy to go back and try something new (although the papardelle bolognese is hard to pass up). Some of our other favorites include the burrata, chicken under a brick, steak (cote du boeuf and the single person order are great). Fish is always very well done and we especially enjoy the grilled sea bass. This last time we tried the chicken pate and that was fantastic. Oh - and the dessert. There's a pumpkin creme brulee on the menu right now that is just wonderful. We have always found the plates very easy to share and in fact my fiancee and I usually end up getting two entrees to split if we can't convince the rest of the table to participate. Everyone is always very friendly and after you've been a few times they get to know you and make you feel extra welcome. We love taking friends/family here when they are passing through town since there's something for everyone (including gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan).

welcome home

The atmosphere in the second floor of the restaurant feels like a typical NYC home. The food was good and the service was great. I especially like their white wine.

Private 40th birthday party in the Skylight Room

By Willa S |

Attended a friend's 40th birthday dinner at Amali recently in the private Skylight room. We enjoyed a few standouts from the menu - the pasta in particular was quite delicious. All elements of the dishes felt so homemade and special - from the addictive sesame bread (served hot with feta butter - wow), to the sourdough flatbread (perfect with the labneh carrot dish) and the special chocolate sorbet. The lamb saddle and salt baked fish were served as main courses, and wow, were they amazing. Amali also has a lovely aperitivo hour at the main bar that we enjoyed while waiting for our friends. Our server, Oscar, made the evening really special and was kind enough to bring candles and a "Happy Birthday" plate for the birthday girl.

Nice Food but Noise was a Deal Killer

By Gil H |

The food was good to excellent and the wine list was excellent and fairly priced. Service was fine. Unfortunately, the noise level was so abominably high that it ruined the entire experience. I will never return.

Excellent restaurant.

By Eli s |

Excellent restaurant. The food was delicious. We had multiple vegetarian dishes. Each one of the dishes was great, and the presentation was a feast for the eyes. Don't miss the whipped fetta . Large bar selection. There are many fish chicken and beef choices that we didn't try . The restaurant is pretty with a european vibe. Music was extremely pleasant and added to the atmosphere. The service was superb. We randomly chose the restaurant, and what a pleasant surprise. There is an outdoor heated area. Pure joy.

Perfect Lunch

By Joe G |

We have been here for dinner but first time for lunch. We were 7 & James was so helpful & attentive. There are wonderful in season salads. The Burratta app was delicious; pasta cooked perfectly with just the right amount of sauce. Service was excellent & we never were rushed through our meal. This is a gem not to be missed.

Great Place for Med Sized Group Dinners

By bmbenton |

We were recommended to try out Amali for dinner reservations for our group dinner for our company. The recommendation came from the Concierge at the JW Marriott Essex House. It is a neighborhood sustainable Mediterranean restaurant. Easy to work with. Our group of 20 was accommodated in their Skylight Room that held us comfortably with a massive skylight above that would be great for lunch on a sunny day. Our group was able to pick from a pre-set menu and everyone was very satisfied with the selection. Hit of the night was the Gabe the Fish Babe's Daily Fresh Cod. Delish! The decor is simple with a touch of elegance. Comfortable enough for suits or jeans....whatever is the dress code for your group. We happened to be in more business casual clothes. It's NYC prices, but was reasonable for a corp group. All in all, the service was very attentive (we are in the hotel business) and we were able to all enjoy each other's company for a great evening! I would definitely recommend this to others looking for more neighborhood type dining and not anything stuffy.

Very "Cheer" ful

By Karen R |

We went for lunch just before the 4th of July weekend and our server's name is Cheer. Yep, no joke. She was wonderful and we just thought - let's allow her to suggest everything. What the heck. First off they are featuring flights of rose' from various parts of the world during the summer months. My wife and I aren't rose' favorites and more of red wine fans. Well we were blown away by the rose's that were on showcase. We did 2 - the Greek and the Spanish flights. Very cool. Next Cheer brought out warm marinated olives and a fresh spring salad with split peas and green beans. Both fabulous. Then we had the pasta with ground veal. Fantastic. And then the grand finale was a roasted chicken and then grass fed beef. Both were spectacular. James, who responds to almost all of these TripAdvisor reviews, came by the table and introduced himself. James and Cheer both take pride in the restaurant and want the customers to have a great experience - which we absolutely did. But if you have a bad one, which could happen, then I like how they make every attempt to make it right, As for me and my wife... the best review that any restaurant manager wants to hear is this - "we will definitely be back again." I hope those who read these reviews and will trust us. Go and experience Amali's for yourselves. You won't be disappointed.

Delicious dinner with kids before the theatre

By Emily B |

Absolutely delicious food, quiet, relaxing ambience, like a little oasis in the midst of the chaotic hustle and bustle of the city. Every bite of food was incredible! I want to go back for another experience because it was just so wonderful.

Post theater get together

By qqSbstee |

Went here for the first time after a show at 59e59 Theaters with friend. When we walked in at 9:00 the room was very loud, but it got quieter as the evening progressed. The service was attentive and, most importantly, not rushed. The waitress was very helpful in letting us know which dishes were most suitable for sharing. The food was very good, especially salads. We had a relaxed and pleasant meal with time for conversation.

Quaint and Cozy

By D D |

A nice place where you can actually have a conversation. Service was excellent. Sommelier was helpful in the choice of wine. I had the duck breast because the reviews on Yelp said it was highly recommended. For the price, I had better and tastier duck breast. Nonetheless, it was a good place. Maybe I should have had the grilled octopus instead of the duck breast. Oh well- you live and learn.

First Night In The City

By Mark P |

We had reservations at Amali based on reviews found on Tripadvisor. The food was fresh and good. I found the service to be excellent and the servers on top of everything. I was especially impressed that my server constantly was saying "thank you" You just don't find that anymore and it was refreshing. Amily will be on my list to try again the next time I'm in the city.

A nice dinner

By 4TravelingMartinis |

Tried Amali on a recent trip to NYC. We had the fried rabbit as well as the fish of the day. Both dishes were very good. The restaurant has a cozy neighborhood feel. I would highly recommend this restaurant to those who are looking for a great meal away from the hustle and bustle of many other mid-town restaurants.

Delicious, fresh, lively

By Christine C |

I had a birthday dinner here for 6 people and I was very pleased with the ambiance, food and service. Everything on the menu was perfectly fresh and well prepared. The quality of the food was exceptional and the preparation simple yet precise. I especially enjoyed the octopus and the rabbit cacciatore. Some of the pasta dishes were on the small side but delicious. The wine list was extensive and they have a sommelier available to answer questions and help with pairings. The service was attentive but could be a little warmer.

A kind gesture

By Albert M |

My wife and I were in NYC visiting our son who lives and works in SoHo. He wanted us to meet his new friend who lives and works uptown, so we were going to meet in The Bar Room on a East 60th near her office when she got off work, which was very late, well after 10 pm. The Bar Room was packed and very noisy, so we had to find another place. Next door, Amali was just about to close down, but they took pity on us and let us come in. We bought a very nice bottle of wine, a 1998 Beaujolais, and sat and talked until we were the last patrons left. It was perfect, thanks to Amali's kind gesture. That counts for a lot in my book.

Wonderful Dinner for a Whirlwind Visit

Fresh, amazing and delicious!

By Caroline L |

Selected Amali for our team dinner and it did not disappoint. Everything was fresh, amazing and delicious. Cocktails and wine were on point, service was friendly, excellent and very patient as it took us a while to figure out what to order. Amali was very accommodating for our medium sized group of 7. We enjoyed our table setup right in the middle of their back room which is glass roofed. Totally makes you feel as if you're sitting in a lovely quiet courtyard instead of in the middle of bustling midtown east. I would definitely return on my own for dinner with friends or family as everything was delicious! Starters - *Seared haloumi - nicely seared & the grilled pita went nicely *Salumi & cured meat: serrano ham, chicken liver pate & finocchiona (all very good) *Octopus a la plancha - nicely marinated and grilled, very good *Whole black sea bass salt baked - awesome presentation, it was very moist and amazing Entrées - *Roasted chicken under a brick - read about this being really good here so we made sure at least one was ordered. It was juicy and very nicely seasoned and topped with wild mushrooms, black garlic and chives (very flavorful). *Seafood brodo - light yet very rich and flavorful broth chock full of fresh mussels (large, juicy and NOT sandy which was awesome), fresh clams, super tender and fresh calamari, flaky fresh local bass and juicy head-on shrimp with some grilled ciabatta for dipping into the seriously good broth. *Grass fed beef of the day was skirt steak - popular choice as 3 were ordered. And they came with the requisite garlic mashed potatoes, crispy shallots and baby turnips. This came out sliced and individual platters and all were polished off! Side - *Crispy brussel sprouts - these were AMAZEBALLS!!! we ordered another one as the first one was being fought over. *New potatoes - crisp yet soft in the middle, very tasty & topped with feta, we also ordered a second w.o the feta. *Roasted broccoli - nicely done but was the least fought over. Dessert - *Warm apple crostata - for our bday boy which was nicely brought out with candle and served with a scoop of caramel gelato which was really really good *Dark chocolate cake doughnuts - pretty large dessert and VERY chocolaty *House made gelato of the day was fresh fig and ricotta - it was so light and refreshing, would've loved taking home a gallon of this!!! *Chocolate chip cookies - they were gluten free (not sure if this is regularly or more to accommodate our gluten allergic diner) and were served warm We all thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here and it was a hit. Will definitely return! Apologies for not remembering any of the staff's name but they were all lovely (and i do remember faces!). They were all smiles and had great suggestions for drinks and food.

Good food and excellent service -- a must go back

By richardallan2016 |

We were meeting with grandson #2 for dinner and my wife said: Let him pick the place! So we did, And on a rainy night we met at this friendly simple restaurant that serves great food. The staff is welcoming and very responsive to ones issues regarding ingredients in various dishes. My wife cannot eat green pepper (cooked or uncooked) and the waiter was concerned whether this apply to all peppers--even if cooked. Nice. The Octopus and Burrata Appetizers were generous and very well served. My grandson had the Tagliatelle Bolognese and he said it was delicious. The portion looked small to me but he said it was more than enough. My wife had the “special” salmon and she said she could have eaten twice the amount of sauce it was so good. I had the chicken under brick...crisp outside and moist within. ( what was leftover I took home and had for lunch the following day) Very Nice, a definite return!

A surprisingly wonderful dinner!

By Bi-coaster |

Although billing itself as Mediterranean cuisine, this place is really Italian with some Greek wines tossed in. The grilled haloumi was lovely, the shrimp with heads on garlicky and scrumptious and the simple spaghetti with tomato and basil delectable!! My husband enjoyed his farro salad and we shared the cookie plate. Appreciated was the complimentary pecan tart with bourbon sweet potato gelato--done in the spirit of the season we thought. The restaurant was full and very noisy until late in our meal. Definitely a keeper!

Marvelous Mediterranean in Midtown

By ZenaRd |

First time dining here and we enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, and the great attention and service. I would warn that these are not Mediterranean portions - you may want to share some dishes. The food and presentation were executed very well. We chose to eat here because of local sourcing and were not disappointed. Tuna tartare is delicious, octopus is great, but very large and has potatoes and other ingredients, so very filling. The halibut and scallops also beautifully done. The halibut is particularly interesting as it has great greens and fresh dill. Seemed almost poached. Excellent wine list - we opted for a Greek Santorini. Room has a great buzz. Bar is also a fun place to eat. Very fun and enjoyable evening. Certainly seems like a great lunch place as well. Ah, and the focaccia to start is light and delicious. Good find!

Great food and ambiance

By harrymd |

Great seafood choices and flavorful dishes are the highlights at this restaurant. Excellent service. Octopus appetizer was a sheer delight. Baked sea bass and pork loin were excellent and left us wanting more. Corkage is $45 , however they claim that if you bring a bottle of wine that is not available for purchase they will not charge corkage fee. Our experience from last night suggests that the sommelier may be a little dishonest on that front. We were not charged corkage for 1998 la grande dame, however we were charged for a 2012 pride cabernet from napa. When we questioned it the sommelier claimed she could purchase it from a wine store in ryebrook. This is not true since we checked the same website that the sommelier claimed and it was not there. The restaurant refused to waive off the charge. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5.

Bait and switch corkage policy

By TheJanvers |

Visited on the recommendation of one of our favorite wine merchants in NYC. We were doubly encouraged by liberal corkage policy stated on their web site. 1000 bonus points on Open Table at 8:15pm on a Saturday night was first warning sign. Menu items not available was second warning sign. Salad app was good, but the pasta tasted of almost pure butter. The lobster pasta entree was fine but not great. The branzino was served precisely as it was explicitly asked not to be served. Enormous corkage fee of $45 was added to bill to account for our 28 year old Super Second, nothing the likes of which was to be found on Amali's wine list (not even close). When asked, the sommelier was aggressive, rude, illogical, and sadly no more articulate than her misleading web-based corkage policy statement. Given all these warning signs, if one has the poor judgment to want to dine at Amali your window of opportunity might be blessedly short. Not recommended.

Nice place. Most tender octopus!

Went here for a business dinner. Great service and the most tender octopus I have ever had! Would go here again if in the area.

Best wedding dinner ever! Great for party's!

By peter l |

My husband and I recently got married in NYC (all the way from Scotland) and decided to have our wedding dinner on the top floor of Amali. The team set out a long table (for 25 people), beautifully presented and decorated our table with our name places, favours and names on our menus. The room looked amazing. We were allowed to play our own playlist of music and have a first dance in the room. The staff were excellent and so attentive. I have only received this service in Michelin star restaurants. No ones glass was ever empty and we never waiting long between courses. Now the food... It was out of this world. We had so many compliments about the steak we were served it was amazing and also the broccoli and potatoes. The chocolate brownies were heavenly. We were slightly apprehensive about our wedding meal as we had been organising it from afar but we had absolutely no reason to be. It surpassed our expectations as we had one of the best meals of our life! It was honestly that good. We can't wait to go back and order the steak!!! Thanks to Steve, james, Frankie and the team for making our wedding meal so perfect.

Unique Flavors

By Nicole D |

With so many restaurants to choose from in Midtown, Amali was a quiet spot for something different. The flavor profiles are unique and tasty. I really enjoyed the tuna tar tar; it was different than any other I’ve had before. My scallops were perfectly seared and flavorful. The expansive wine list includes some good options from Greece that we enjoyed. They don’t have sprite or 7-up, which our son ordered; they did bring him a ginger ale, but it’s homemade and doesn’t taste like the ginger ale we’re used to. We weren’t impressed with the dessert options. Overall, it was a good/very good experience, but I don’t know if we’ll go again.

Great place highly recommend

By daniel N |

. Amani was great - nice staff, really great food ( start w the Salumi, def get the chicken and add the brussel sprouts). Relaxing atmosphere. A little loud but not terribly. Great wine pairings. As advertised, expensive, like 80 per, w just a couple glasses of wine and only one dessert. Highly recommend.

First experience during a quiet lunch.

By Peter S |

Service was fine. The restaurant was nearly empty on a weekday. Food was decent, however the french fries that were served were not much better than what you might receive at a McDonalds. What I found rather distasteful was the 18% automatic service charge that was incurred in. order to have employees "earn a living wage." And the check recommended tipping the waiter separately. At my usual 20%, this would mean I would be paying a 38% extra plus tax. This is not a reason for me to return for a second visit.

Perfect dinner

Yesterday was our first time we went to this excellent restaurant. But it is surely not the last. We enjoyed the evening very much with the efficient service, with the superb meal and fine drinks and with the honest charge. We will no doubt come back again

Nice food, slooow service, expensive

By MysteryBradley |

We are at Amali last night and had a great time but this was due to the company more than the restaurant. The service was 'ok' but our food took an age to arrive and we had to chase it up a couple of times. The excuse was that rissotto takes a while and they accepted it had taken around 10 mins longer than it should have to bring us our food (more like 45 mins too long). We were offered free desserts (which we were then charged for and had to ask for them to be removed from the bill). The food was fine but in my opinion over priced (and I live in London). The wine was also very expensive, even for Californian red which is not in short supply over here. All in all a middle-of-the-road experience. I wouldn't go back.

Innovative and tasty food ! Desert broke da mouth

By Question M |

For our first time in New york city, we tried many restaurants. Among them Amali was one of the Best. This place serves real cuisine. We had the bolognese pasta and it was awesome ! For desert, we tried their Helzelnut gelato and their rhubarb pie.... AMAZING!

Great Meal and Ambience

By gmiker |

Such a great visit with comfortable setting and excellent food. The service is always great. This is our second time and it was everything that we expected. They have great gluten free options and were very responsive when we mentioned the allergy. Great job.

If I'd be given one choice...

By Nil S |

If I'd be given only one choice to eat in Manhattan, Amali would be it! I know that's maybe too much to say, but the restaurant has all the elements done right. Food, wine, ambiance, and service. I ate there for the first time per friend's recommendation. He was spot on! James (co-owner) was super friendly, taking his time to check on us and chat for a few minutes. The "Octopus a la Plancha" is a must have appetizer! Can't wait to return.

High expectations were not realized

By worldtraveler4346 |

We had a family event for about 65 people for brunch and were given the room upstairs, which does not easily accommodate such numbers. The service was abysmal; the food only so-so. It was evident that they were not ready to serve everyone at the same time as the timing of each dish was many minutes apart. Sitting at a table of 10, we were served food that was meant for 6. Second helping of the same dish was served 15 minutes later. Same for all the other dishes; nothing was served together and despite serving soft poached eggs, no bread was served with it. We had to ask 3 times for some bread, and that eventually came with 3 slices for a table of 10 people. Drinks were pushed hard, but food was scarce. There were clearly not enough servers nor enough going on in the kitchen. The french toast was good, but came with no toppings, sauces or anything else to make it interesting. The polenta tasted good, but was really runny. The dessert brownie was tiny in size and we were wondering whether they were running out of food. This restaurant should not accept "larger" groups if they can not service same. Perhaps the prior good reviews were justified for a meal served for a party of 2 or 4, but our experience was a huge disappointment. By pushing alcoholic drinks on the guests (who were unaware that they were not included with the brunch), the price of the whole afternoon was greatly inflated.

Great cause. I will go next time. I will go. You will make good food. You will put good music. You will play Elton.

By Leo T |

I was there on FaceTime with my uncle and aunt. I heard nice tunes. And I was thinking it was the best. I will go with them soon.

Lovely quiet well located restaurant with great Italian food.

By Dorothy |

I stumbled into this restaurant in the rain on my way back to my hotel. It is down 2 steps through an apartment building doorway. The lovely candles attracted me to it. It has low lighting and a small bar. I sat and ordered amazing wines and food. My daughter joined me, the bartender let us try an option of each wine before we ordered it.

Revised menu at a cozy place!

By Bi-coaster |

Now billing themselves as "sustainable Mediterranean," Amali has a menu of appetizers, small plates and entrees. We opted for the threesome of prosciutto, chorizo, and a cheese plus the chickpea and cauliflower croquettes, asparagus and green onions, and the fluke crudo. Everything was delicious as were the warmed olives. Very nice service too, but we had a reservation at 7 pm on a Friday.

Fantastic local neighborhood restaurant

By DoubleD1969 |

It's my first review on Tripadvisor, but I have dined here on many, many occasions -- usually with local friends - for several years. It's my favorite place in the midtown east area. The menu changes seasonally, and I always look forward to trying their latest creations. However, it is a custom to always order one of their pasta dishes -- the gnocci or pappardelle. It is a generally a lively crowd, but if you want a bit of peaceful dining, ask to be seated in the back room. The wine list is excellent, but if you want to bring a special bottle -- like a 1990 Lafitte-Rothschild, they will gladly welcome it at no charge. See the corkage policy in their website. The service is always outstanding.

best ever

By Amali S |

sike it was bad it was hot and we reserved the seats but we got put in the backrooms the food came out expensive without any prices on the menu. The slaves kept coming to take seats from the room dont go here ever.

Great food & corkage policy

By NYChelsea2 |

Recently had dinner here trying a selection of dishes, sampling of pastas, octopus, burrata and steak. All the food was very well prepared and delicious. Service was courteous and attentive and pricing was very reasonable for mid-town NYC at this caliber. They have a very liberal corkage policy that allows you to bring your own wine without a corkage fee under certain circumstances (see their website for details). This is great for wine collectors who prefer to drink their own wine with dinner. Will definitely return and bring friends.

Hot doesn't mean good

By Alejandro D |

Amali could be one of the hot spots in the city but I think it is overrated. The place is too loud (it is very difficult to have a conversation with the person next to you), the portions are on the small side and service is average.

Not worth it on any level.

By Helen B |

The food is not worth what they charge. The kale salad and whipped feta dip were fine. Our waiter recommended the salt baked sea bass, but never mentioned that it weighed in at 3-1/2 lbs. - far too big - and that it cost over $150! Even worse, it was bland and served only with a single small wedge of lemon. We had to ask three times for salt, pepper and more lemon. Desserts were not good: the pana cotta was far too dense, slightly rubbery in texture and bland except for the pistachios on top; the rhubarb crisp was really like a soft-baked oat bar.

Nice

I went with colleagues for a diner celebration; we were placed at their private room, cozy and convenient for the group. Good services and food. On my way out the restaurant was completed booked, nice energy, beautiful people, relax atmosphere.

Farm to table Greek

By 5headedmonster |

Hip and smart, but also nicely cosy. Appealing looking bar on the way in. Food is classic Greek and done well. Kick off with meats, cheese and hummus etc, into a delicious salad and followed by really delicious chicken (which didn’t feel so Greek to me !). Comprehensive wine list, great service, good food in a nice atmosphere worked for me.

Maybe 3 1/2

By GM20142014 |

Had dinner with friends , the place has nondescript decor , but it is overall comfortable. My pasta was handmade and very good, al dente. Other guests had the striped bass and they really enjoyed it. Good desserts. Wine list is pretty inclusive but on the expensive side. Service was fine.

Exceeds expectations!!!

By Naasira M |

Had dinner with some friends. The octopus a la plancha was THE best octopus I've ever eaten in my life. Tender and melt in your mouth goodness. And the chicken under a brick was perhaps the best roast chicken I've tasted (even better than my mom's). It was moist and tender and the garlic mashed potatoes has since inspired me to perfect that dish. I'd definitely be back on my next visit to NYC and would be recommending it to all my friends and family.

Terrible experience

By MarinaChuk22 |

Do not waste your money! Had a terrible experience, restaurant was empty with the exception of one other table and the food took only 30 mins to come out. Appetizers were all underwhelming, “crispy eggplant” was drenched in oil & tasteless, cauliflower artichoke dip wasn’t much better. Flatware was changed for the next course and I received a dirty spoon, the waiter changed it. Finally we received our entrees, I took three bites only to find a hair in my food. They asked to change it but I no longer wanted anything from that kitchen. Strong odor of standing water by the kitchen door, as you walk to the restrooms. Just disgusted and disappointed, especially at this price point.

A Gem

By Kent B |

We have eaten at Amali several times now, and each time both the food and service have been top notch. Deyvi, our waiter, even remembered what we ordered at an earlier visit. The food is excellent. The labneh was the best that I have ever had. My wife loved the mussels, and my pasta was excellent. What made it especially nice was that the entire front of the house staff made sure that anything that we needed showed up immediately. Overall, a wonderful experience.

A delight

By DCInsider |

I had a work dinner here the other night, and I'm sorry I didn't get to see the whole menu as it was pre-planned. But the dinner was delightful. Served family style, the portions were generous and the flavors were clean and bright. Salmon and chicken were offered with sides of roasted potatoes and brussle sprout- excellent. Really simple but flavorful and very homey. And the room- big farmhouse table, high ceilings, warm lighting. I loved it. Great service, too. Next time I am in NYC I will go back and see what else they offer! Really nice spot.

Delicious food and great service, but noisy!

By David C |

Amali is a wonderful restaurant with great service and delicious food. We were two and ordered Charcuterie, Oysters, and Salmon Tartare as starters. For the main course, I had Red Snapper and my friend ordered Filet Mignon. The food was absolutely delicious, flavorful, and fresh. We both enjoyed our meal. Service from welcoming to the end was remarkable. Prices are quite high but match the quality of food and service. The only concern I had was noise. Even though the restaurant was not fully occupied, and distance between tables are not too short, it was almost impossible for me to have a conversation with my friend. I think the reason might be a poorly selected decorative wall surface that has very reflective acoustic properties. It’s a problem that needs solving. Please invite an acoustic engineer to get recommendations on how to improve it.

Great food, lively and comfortable setting

Enjoyed a business dinner at Amali. Great choices for foodies, and it was lively but not loud. We were able to conduct business and have a fabulous time.

An intimate, wine-friendly neighborhood restaurant with

By David P |

This nominally Mediterranean restaurant is really a new age mixed-cuisine neighborhood gem. Everyting from salumi plates to gourmet salads & pastas to fish, beef, chicken and pork with a slight nod to southern European style, Amali also has an extensive, Millenial-oriented, wine list: new finds, albeit a bit pricey. With great inobtrusive service, Michelin starred restauarants could take a lesson from Amali. Go for a quiet place to have a conversation with very good wine and food as a foil.

Tasty and fresh

By 893Sandra |

The small menu was perfect for a restaurant of this size. There were enough choices for everyone and everything we had was fresh and cooked to perfection. A special mention must be made of an old favourite Spagetti Bolonese which was really the best I've had in a long time. The Ravioli was excellent too except that the portion was a bit tiny. The Roasted Chicken Under A Brick was also lovely and crispy. Definitely an enjoyable evening.

Great dinner!

By marcogiglio |

We had a really good meal. The pasta was cooked at perfection (al dente) and the pork ribs were incredibly tender. Also the service was really good, and the place is quiet and cozy. It is expensive, in line with close by restaurants , but still I would definitely recommend it!

Expensive but worth it

A little disappointing....

By Joetzz191 |

I have been a big fan of Pariyali and il Cantinori for many years. They are sister restaurants of Amali, so I was very happy to book a small gathering (eight people) for my (adult) daughter's birthday at this east side restaurant. The food was good, though the "for the table" apps were a little small. The ambiance was blah. Service was fine, it could have been a little better. Wine was a little over priced, but good. Several of us had the brick pressed chicken: it was delicious and juicy, though a few said a little over salty. The homemade gelattos were a big hit - fresh tasting, but again, a very small portion. There is nothing I could point to that would make me say I disliked our dining experience; it just lacked that certain something that would turn an ordinary experience to a really special experience. I would go back to Amali to give another try, but it is not on the top of my list of must go places. For the money, I'd prefer Pariyali any day.

You need to experience this

By TCS |

This is how you do service!!! The food is exceptional, full of flavour and well presented. But the thing that caught my attention was how smoothly everyone worked together to take care of our table. From the hostess, to our server to the Sommelier, everyone was efficient, friendly and knowledgeable! They worked together beautifully. This is how a dining experience should be!

Expensive and tasteless meal

Great Mediterranean food and service

By cooperpeterj |

I'd read excellent reviews but have had difficulty getting reservations (now I know why!). Had dinner there over Thanksgiving weekend and it was even better than we'd expected. Staff are great, gracious. Place is small and cosy - just off Park Ave. Wine list is more Greek than Italian - but really well curated. We had seafood - outstanding pasta vongole and also grilled whole Mediterranean fish. They don't try to be all things to everyone and do what they do really well. We'll go back!
