Not very good

By MrTEastlake |

The setting looked nice, clean, decent. We ordered take out. Not a good meal. Glad it wasn't expensive. Waste of time. No need to return.

Delicious and inventive sushi!

By Iakovos72 |

It is one of the most interesting sushi restaurants in the city. I loved the Flying Dragon Roll and the Rainbow Roll. Great soba noodles as well. I believe that they may have one of the bigger selections of rolls to choose from in the city. Ambiance overall good, though a bit noisy, but hey this is NYC. Nice cocktails as well.

Lunch Special

By alleleven |

Asuka's lunch special is top drawer! I consider myself a "regular," taking advantage of the lunch special every month or two for at least two years. I mostly order the teriyaki bento box (salmon), which comes with complementary miso soup & the salad bar. You can either have a waitress fill your salad-bar plate, or go over there yourself and have your pick. Of course I like to choose. Since I live with someone who hates beets, I count on Asuka's salad bar for my beet fix. A friend of mine gets dolmades and cucumber. Everything on the salad bar is super fresh. You can have as much as you want of anything. However, I would call the salad bar offerings "international," not strictly Japanese. One tip for the managers/owners of Asuka, though, would you consider labelling the various salad dressings? The only one I can identify by sight is blue cheese/roquefort. But Dear Readers, you're probably more interested in the main course: the bento box is full of wonderful goodies: parboiled broccoli, sushi, sashimi, rice, the salmon beautifully presented on very lightly heated lettuce or cabbage -- all in all, since I'm nearly stuffed by the time I finish the soup & salad offerings, I take most of my bento box home for dinner and am set for the rest of the day. The atmosphere is unhurried and calm, features which I totally appreciate: good for digestion! Also, the staff doesn't nag you to order a beverage (where restaurants make the most profit -- trust me, I worked in various restaurants as waitstaff myself). In fact, the few times my friends and I requested tea at Asuka, it never appeared on our bill, so I assume it`s complementary. Beware, though, tea is served in ceramic cups with no handles, and it is HOT! Enjoy relaxing with a delicious meal!

Excellent Japanese food, clearly,popular.

By babubenj |

Marvelous choice, we felt, in spite of noise and tight table fit. Clearly popular: on a mid-week night, the place was packed. Menu has so many options, a treat! My heart condition precludes using soy sauce (even so-called "low sodium"), but the sushi was just fine with wasabi and ginger. And the service was superb- warm and attentive! We'll return.

Best Sushi in NYC

By KirstinS72412 |

This place is by far the best sushi place in NYC. I highly recommend to all. Special rolls are to die for and affordable!

Best Bento Box!!!

By BeverlyLosAltos |

Everything we had at Asuka was outstanding. We ordered the Bento Box which came with more food than we have ever been served in a box. Instead of a "regular" salad they offer a salad bar for those that prefer making their own. The salad bar was great as was all the food we were served. We will definitely go back the next time we visit New York.

Good sushi

By Narek D |

Their dinner combo is quite good, giving you plenty of sushi and chicken dishes for a reasonable price.

Friendly, nice vibe, fresh fish and a great lychee martini!

By Pierpaolo A |

Fresh sushi in a young and vibrant but not pretentious atmosphere; friendly staff. Doesn't blow you away, but worth it if you feel like a good japanese meal in Chelsea. Very good value for money. Start of with a lychee Martini, worth it!

Excellent Sushi - reasonably priced, especially for NYC

By Mr Potato H |

Sushi was excellent. Price was reasonable as well considering it's in the heart of NYC. In fact, wasn't any more expensive than sushi in the burbs.

Great and very helpul + fast service and fastastic sushi and tempura - unique options

By Eva D |

- Location on 23rd street next to a subway station - Interior: cosy, clean, trendy, but a bit dark - Service: really helpful and fast - Menu: some many choices and varieties - Food: great - fresh and delicious

Make reservation or come early.

By vasile123 |

This place gets packed on a Tuesday at 7:00 pm . So make reservation. They have happy hour their cocktails are delicious, we had leecheetinis. Their sushi is good, tasty, good place to eat and catch up, cannot linger too much cause it's crowded but that is good. We'll be back .

Great Japanese Choice in Chelsea

By Hugh |

You can't go wrong at Asuka for reliably good Japanese cuisine. I had their dinner bento box. It was generous and very good. Excellent service. Their sushi is worth going out of your way for.

Great food, great service

By fpaulo2k1 |

The place was packed, but we were lucky and got a nice table for our party of 4 for dinner (booking recommended!). We ordered Teriyaki with beef, chicken and salmon, and a vegetarian dish. All options were excellent with lots of food and included a visit to the salad buffet. Ordering process was simple, efficient (and accurate with vegetarian/vegan details) but it took a little while for us to get our dishes. Note that dishes are rather inexpensive (specially considering the quality and serving size) but drinks can add a significant value to the final bill... so... choose wisely!

creative cuisine- great service

By John R |

Twice in a week Asuka provided a wonderful cuisine, comfortable service, an engaging ambience. For a creative approach to Japanese food with good value for money, try Asuka.

Good food

By Hela |

The food is good, but the place is very busy, not very relaxing. The staff is very efficient and the portions huge, specially on thai food. We did not manage to finish what we ordered and they politely aske if we wanted it packed to take home.

Delicious food & great service.

By macsianmac |

We stayed around the corner from Asuka recently & ate here many times. The food is SO good. The salad bar is a great plus & the service is second to none. They do a great lunch special too. A must visit if you're in the area - it's fab.

great food great service what's not to like

By BobHarvey |

Helpful staff, excellent food. Recommend the three sake trial selection - good value great way to get into sake.

This is your “go to” sushi spot

By tms215 |

Nope, not fancy. Nope, not pretentious. Nope, no exotic fish you can’t get anywhere else. It is just an excellent place to eat simple sushi. A large menu full of sushi and cooked options. VERY reasonably priced and the service is excellent. This is the best value sushi restaurant in the city. Perfect for a date night where you don’t want to break the bank. Oh, and they have a happy hour that goes well into the evening

Got Delivered Sushi

By HudsonValleyGuy |

Unexpectedly had to work late at a job site. Went to app and ordered a double order is sushi. Brown rice with tuna and avocado. Good size pieces with plenty of wasabi and ginger. Very fresh and good size pieces

Nice ambiance and good food

By Mare |

Recently tried Asuka in Chelsea, NY. When we got there the place is pretty empty but it is because of the time. The place is well maintained and clean. The staff are attentive and the food selection is just fine. I ordered Pad Thai which I thought was better than most places I've tried before. I also had the Lemongrass Seafood Soup which is spicy but very nice to have in a cold day. Wait staff are very attentive and helpful. Conveniently located on 23rd street between 9th and 10th ave in Chelsea. I recommend this place for Japanese - Thai night.

Great Sushi in Chelsea

By guppie9 |

Family of four stopped here for lunch while in Chelsea. The prices were very affordable and the food was great. The sushi selection was large and delicious. I am a west coast sushi snob and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and taste of the sushi here. It rivals some of the better spots that I have been to out west. We would definitely come back here.

Asuka has it all - super fresh, super staff, very efficient!

By davidhouser |

My wife and I could not have been more pleased with Asuka….went twice in our quick 4 day visit to NYC. Special shout out to Nancy, a super friendly, knowledgeable and wonderful server! Thanks for making some of our custom-request happen. And Alex, the amazing sushi chef who runs like a machine providing amazing dish after dish. Keep it up….we will be back again soon!

The best Sushi place in Chelsea

By Rob Ord |

I love this place! great restaurant, location, atmosphere and of course the food! the only problem is crowded and single bathrooms...but the food is so worth it!

Great Sushi!

By gregfrary |

So fun with a great wait staff and a varied menu. Great happy hour specials and always bustling and fun!!!

Great neighborhood sushi

By Alain L |

Went on a Saturday night with friends, restaurant was packed so it was a good ambience. Place is neat and clean, waiters were efficient and pleasant. Everything was average: good sushi and other Japanese delicacies, but no different from other medium range Japanese restaurant. Service ok, price reasonable. On the plus side, they allow byob for a 15$ fee, and the oysters with Japanese "mignonette" was excellent. Really a good neighborhood restaurant, not worth travelling miles, but ok to meet friends coming in the subway close by.

Great Sushi Selection

By Alexander M |

Chelsea's ASuka Japanese Restaurant has a wonderful selection of sushi to chose from and some of the choices are quite inventive. The sushi is fresh and very tasty. It's an upscale sushi restaurant and the service is efficient.

Excellent and unexpected

By MBLucks |

I walked in to escape the cold after the concierge at the hotel messed my reservation in a restaurant nextdoor....I asked to sit at the sushi bar and I had the most lovely experience. Service was fabulous and with a smile throughout, decent wines available at a fair cost and the rolls and sashimi were surprisingly good! The bill was fair and I will certainly try and visit again!

always on our MUST DO NYC list

By andrewSalgado |

its the only restaurant in NYC we ALWAYS go to on each trip. It is just so darned good!!! very affordable considering the quality

Great night out for great price!

By Rebecca W |

This was my favorite meal of the weekend in NYC hands down! We had a party of 8 that they were able to accommodate very last minute. The wait staff were very knowledgeable and hospitable. I had two shots, a specialty cocktail, edamame appetizer and vegetable yaki udon entrée with miso soup for $37.00. That's unheard of in the city! Everything was super delicious and filling and it will definitely become a staple restaurant I go to every time I'm in the city.

Delicious

By Lucky69 |

My son and I were looking for a Japanese restaurant close to where he lives and we came across A Suka. We peeked inside and saw that it was almost filled with patrons and suspected that it must be a good place, so we took a chance! My dinner entree of Beef Negimaki came with either soup or salad, two types of vegetables and either white or brown rice. It was to die for! The beef was so tender it just melted in my mouth - and the vegetables were crunchy and so fresh! They gave me broccoli and asparagus and there was also onion and scallions. They have a salad bar so you are allowed to make your own salads! Their salad dressing was one of the best I've ever tasted! My son ordered the chicken udon soup and ate every drop! The waitress was every attentive to us and very sweet! I also overheard some of the customers saying how nice the waitstaff are! Prices were very reasonable for the amount of food you got and for NYC in general! I will be recommending this restaurant to my friends and family!

Good but not great

By Lunartuna |

This was hovering between a 3 and 4 for us. The food was really good. We had a starter with edamame and tempura (zucchini and shrimp). The main we had a mixed sushi/sashimi, which was good, though not as good as we'd been used to when compared with Amsterdam and Madeira experiences. The swing to the 3 and away from the 4 was due to service. Our waitress was a little abrupt and frosty, which was not our experience anywhere else in NYC.

Quality food with fresh ingredients

By Ed H |

Had dinner here with a party of nine. Service was fast, pleasant and helpful with menu choices. Many menu choices and you get a lot of food for a very reasonable price.

Incredible price for so much great food!

By S&C Travels |

Was here for lunch and stumbled upon gold. After spending no more than $10 or so per person we walked away totally full. That price for sushi and Thai food in New York and the quality is amazing. Go here for lunch. Because I used Yelp I also got a free green tea ice cream.

Sushi Drinks for Two and UNDER 100 dollars

By Fenway6 |

I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a dinner in the City with two people, a lot of delicious choices of Sushi, and 2 exotic cocktails for under $100. The sushi was delicious and FRESH. The house cocktails, which I generally stay away from, were so good! We each had two of our choices. Excellent services, outside & inside dining. Our temperature was taken when we arrived and the tables were socially distanced. I LOVED THIS SPOT!

BEST SUSHI IN A LOOOONG TIME

By 084766554 |

Let the sushi chef choose your sashimi or sushi (as traditional) you will not be disappointed. The sashimi and sushi was impeccable. Varied, tastefully done, presented with care and delicious. Appetizers and sides were just as high quality. The atmosphere is clean and appears safe. The staff was friendly and the service was spot on. This was one of my most enjoyable sushi experiences, it's been a long time, thank you.

really good sushi

By Patricia B |

I have been to Asuka for several times, but first time I leave a review. Each time they deliver - great sushi selection, tasty delicious meals, good selection of wines, and great service. It is a popular spot, so quite busy at dinner.

Fabulous takeaway

By michellew28 |

We ordered an abundance of food. All the sushi rolls were excellent Good value and would definitely recommend

Great price and fresh sushi

By Michael K |

Great prices, great efficient service and good portions. Food is always made fresh. Lychee cocktail is great ! The place is always busy but they are pretty good with turning tables fast. Can get a bit loud but it's a vibrant place. Salad bar is a bomb. 5 stars

Fantastic SUSHI!!

By Tarek E |

One of my favorite sushi spots in the city! I've been here a couple of times and would continue to come back! They also have great cocktails! Very chill vibe! Definitely recommend it!!

Best Asian food and Happy Hour in Chelsea

By Thomas S |

We have been to New York numerous times and we keep coming back to Asuka in Chelsea. This is our third visit this week. The specialize in Japanese and some Thai dishes. One of the best 2 for 1 happy hours from 5 pm to 9 pm Sunday through Thursday and till 7 pm on Friday and Saturday.i love their Chelsea Mai Tai's. The Ramen House Special Noodle Soup is a large delicious meal in itself. I couldn't finish it. The seafood is fantastic and the Sashimi fresh and excellent. Best of all reasonable prices.

Regular hangout

By Chip L |

I eat here at least 2 or 3 times a week when I'm in town! The food is amazing and they do great vegetarian and brown rice sushi! None of it tastes fishy! Yay fav place.

Delicious with great service

By 3GMB |

We read about Asuka on TA after passing by on our neighborhood walk. Wonderful experience! Good choice for us pre-theater, too, because service is fast. Cocktails during happy hour are good and very well priced (buy one get one free). We both had the dinner bento box - plenty of food and very tasty. Tempura shrimp and negimaki beef were our choices: YUM! Our server, Kai, was delightful and fun! Highly recommend for a pleasant night out.

Excellent Sushi and Sashimi but Very Noisy Place!

By LizNYC |

We had a lovely evening stroll on the High Line and then walked over to this beautiful restaurant. It is stunning and lively, but not a place for quiet conversation. The food was excellent and dramatically plated.

Great Sushi in the heart of Chelsea

By Eric_Lord_CT |

My wife and I met another couple for Sushi before catching a show at the McKittrick hotel. My wife is both gluten and dairy free and on the picky side when it comes to dining out. From the host who greeted us to our waitress everyone was welcoming, professional and attentive. The menu was typical sushi, my wife and I shared the Sushi and Sashimi platter and everything was exceptional. The fish presented well, nice and cold and super tasty. On top of that it was a lot of food! My wife and I can both eat and we could not finish the last two pieces of sashimi. After great service, and wonderful food (along with great company from our friends) the best surprise of the evening was the bill. The four of us dinner, drinks and tip and we were under $200 for the meal. For NYC the is a steal! A strong recommendation if you are in Chelsea and craving Sushi.

Great for happy hour!

By Frantzve |

This was a cute little cozy spot for great sushi happy hour! There's also a buffet style option if you don't want something off the menu -- make sure you plan accordingly with your party size because it can get super crowded. It's clean and the service was awesome!

Amazing Soup!

By NYCtoSD |

My friend was not feeling well and just wanted some nice, hot soup. We decided to try Asuka and it was completely worth it. The atmosphere was great. Mostly dimly lit with some colored lighting as well. It was a late dinner on a Saturday night and they were quite busy. The servers were completely attentive even though we were not a big ticket order. If I remember correctly, we paid $12 each for enormous servings of noodle soup with so much chicken and other good stuff in it. We both laughed when the bowls arrived because of how large they were. We could have just ordered one and shared it! Side note: We are both huge sushi fans but given that she was not feeling well and I was pregnant, we opted just for the soup and salad for this meal. I will be going back the next time I am in the city to try out the sushi as well. Must try!

Excellent sushi and service

By CindyFW |

Asuka was just down the street from our hotel and we had admired the beautiful restaurant as we walked by on our way to the High Line. We managed to get a very nice table just before tons of people came in and had to wait and we had a delicious meal: perfectly prepared sushi, the best pork Gyoza we've ever had, and a fablulously delicious Nigori Sake to compliment the meal. The staff people were very friendly and advised us perfectly and were always there to fill our water glasses or bring whatever we needed. The ambiance was just beautiful and trendy with a sort of waterfall that cascades down the front window beautifully and great lighting throughout the restaurant: not too dark, not too bright.

Some of the Best Sushi I've ever had - very popular

By Jerry J |

We had a large group, and the service and Sushi were absolutely spectacular. A bonus is a Happy Hour that goes until 8 pm, so Sake and Singa Beer were very much enjoyed at half price. Highly recommended, but the word is getting out so it's very busy. Make a reservation.

Very good

By David_Mardashev |

Service and food both were good. Prices Are very reasonable. Thanks a lot ! Advice to book in advance. At 20:30 we took like a last table.

Quite dark and expensive

By raija2014 |

Sushies and rolls was fresh and good, but 10 pieces (6 salmon/tuna sushies + 4 cucumber/avocado-rolls) with one japanese bier bottle cost over 30 dollars. It is too much. The restaurant is also dark and quite empty.

great value

By anorth52 |

It's noisy and it's busy but the service is outstanding and the food is delicious! Bento box - sushi, dumplings, tempura veg, teryaki, rice served with salad and miso soup $20. In NYC!!! Oh, and they've got draught Sapporo. What's not to like?

Take out

By Mirysama |

You can tell it is a good place just by how packed it is: Sitting full Queues for take out Large choice Fresh products Full of flavours Maybe a little too salty (but that seems to be a recurring theme in NYC) Priced as per Manhattan standards

Mixed reviews on the food, cool place with good atmosphere and great service

By Tiffanie P |

Stopped in for Sushi without knowing much of anything about the restaurant. It was a good sushi place, not great. The service was very good and food came out quite quickly. The ambiance was cool and the place was quite crowded. Being able to make a reservation was a bonus. We had tempura, gyoza, two sushi rolls and rock shrimp. The specialty spicy sushi rolls were very good. The tempura was a bit odd as it came out in HUGE pieces. The broccoli was once piece that was about ½ a broccoli crown. It was good, just not practical to eat with chopsticks. The rock shrimp had good flavor, but was too doughy. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there, but if in the neighborhood, might stop in again.

What a great spot!

By Karsar22 |

What's not to like? Great location, happy hour drinks 241 and a great salad bar in addition to your entrees. People watch outside or inside TV game watching we had a great time!

Really good sushi place - excellent service

By Vinnie C |

In Chelsea to meet family and chose this place as we could get a reservation for 8 a few days ahead. The place is noisy and bustling but the sushi is excellent and the service was terrific. Our server was Lama and he handled our orders and our grandkids wonderfully. We had a lot of his attention even though he had a couple of other tables. We especially liked the Tuna Tartar appetizer.

Yummy sushi - just too much to choose from

By Simen |

Went here for dinner with friends on a monday evening. We got seated although we did not have a reservation. Would need that during weekends. They have a big menu with lots to choose from. The food was really good - and fresh as I expect from a sushi.place.

Quick Weeknight Dinner

By Kyriaki08 |

Decided to grab dinner since hubby gets lunch a lot from here. It's good mid - priced Asian fusion place... definitely not Japanese only as named might lead you to believe. Hubby really enjoyed his sushi roll. Really great service! Edamame was tasty but vegetable gyozas were steamed mushy & some fell apart; had requested them pan seared not steamed. My Udon noodles with veggies dish was very tasty but again definitely not pan seared as was indicated on menu. Happy hour includes buy 1 get 1 free drink so that was a nice surprise. Overall good but we've had the real deal in Asia.

Great Sushi, Fast Service!

By Elgin C |

While attending a conference in NY I had a taste for sushi and a colleague suggested Asuka. I really like the small neighborhood feel and they also had the first female Itamae I've seen. The menu had many of my favorites, but I decided to try a few different rolls and nigiri. Once we ordered the wait was very short, far shorter than any other sushi restaurant I have frequented. The ingredients were very fresh and I highly recommend the Chelsea Roll.

A winniing sushi spot

By Susan G |

My friend recommended this place and I was glad to be introduced to it. Delicious Cloud 9 special roll. My friend ordered a bento box and took home some. A big box. Very nice waitstaff. I highly recommend this sushi restaurant. Also, the interior is sizable and well laid out with a bar on one side, a sushi bar on the other, and tables set spaciously in between.

Great Japanese food with excellent service.

By Helen P |

Just had a beautiful dinner here. The food was great, especially the Asuka Roll. The service was excellent too. Will definitely try to come here again during our short stay.

Great dinner

By Simon H |

Very friendly service. Good salad bar. Sushi is fine and combo is pretty good. Has a bar as well and TV

Lovely dinner

By Marita L |

Such a great place, gorgeous food and friendly staff! We had sushi and other dishes, all the food was good! Great value for money and food came very quickly to the table.

favorite Japanese restaurant in NYC

By Iva M |

For 2nd year in a row Asuka is still my favorite!! Staff is always kind and on top of everything. Sushi is am aaaaaa zing here. I recommend to try Pink Lady, Dragon Roll and Sex and the City roll. Also their shrimp on the rock is soooo good and Chicken teriyaki!!!! 5 stars!!!! Plus their happy hour 2 drinks for 1 is excellent! p.s. prices are very low compare to area they are in. very affordable

Fair quality japanese restaurant

By DCalexandre |

Went to Asuka last night 09/08 with friends. Had some sushi and sashimi for appetizers and then we all had bento boxes. The bento box is HUGE. I couldn't finish it because it had a lot of rice. It included a california roll that was below average: half cucumber, a little avocado and some of the industrial crab stick. Tasteless! The tempura was good and so was the terriyaki salmon. The service was good and the food was inexpensive for NY standards.

Budget Friendly Sushi

By PL |

Great location right off the A/C train, lots of interesting special rolls. Good happy hour sake deals, also. Decent atmosphere, but you're really going for the good deals and great sushi, not ambiance.

Go for Happy Hour - Great Service and Atmosphere

By PandaHouston |

Came for dinner a little before 8 pm on a Wednesday night. Our server said it was Happy Hour until 9 pm where cocktails, beers and hot sake was 2 for 1. We ordered Guava Cosmopolitan and Lychitini (normally $9 each but half price during happy hour). Beer was $6 (ordered Kirin and got 2 for $6!). Sushi Sashimi Combo was $27, Dragon Roll $11, Shrimp Tempura Roll $8 and Boston Roll $6. Their rolls are a good size and tasty. The sushi/sashimi combo was ok - I'd stick with the rolls. Overall, it was a very affordable meal and a great place to dine. Would definitely try to return.

Great food! Consistent Fresh well made and fast

By Chip L |

I eat here a couple times a week when I'm on town! It's friendly and tasty! They make good vegetarian sushi yay

Strange green curry

By TranceTraveller |

Ate solo and wasn't impressed. Ordered two small dishes and a curry. (Perhaps they could have warned this would be too much for one, but anyway...) Avocado hand roll was nice but very slender with a tough skin. Chewy rather than tasty. Tempura pumpkin pale and quite oily. Batter was not that appetising. But my main concern the chicken green curry was strange. Looked like the meat was covered in chicken skin. Waiter explained was just dipped in some sort of milk coating and briefly deep fried before adding to the stir fry. Seems an odd way to make a Thai curry. Freaked me out as I have a low saturated fat requirement. And tasted OK once I was convinced to give it a go. But I couldn't eat much. Restaurant very cold and drafty from the high speed Aircon. Won't be back.

Cozy Spot For Sushi

By Steve Y |

Ate here a while back and I enjoyed the food, the sake and the atmosphere. I thought the experience was really exquisite - was able to dine at an area where I was able to sit close to the ground. This area was part of the central sushi bar. I thought the sushi served was very fresh and probably one of the best I have tasted in New York City.

gross - not sure what I was eating

By 2011nyctraveler |

I don't know what they use in their spicy tuna rolls but there is not much if ANY tuna. Weird consistency and taste. It's GROSS. All the other sushi I had was mediocre at best. Avoid this place is you want good sushi. ICK!

Excellent and Reasonable Japanese Restaurant

By ronco0807 |

After taking in a late afternoon movie at the Chelsea Bow Tie Cinema we felt like having Japanese food for dinner. Located just down the street is Asuka. The restaurant has an active bar and a handsome dining room. The staff is friendly and professional. The menu contains everything you might look for in a Japanese restaurant, sushi, sashimi, tempura, noodle soups, etc. We both started with delicious Miso soup, mine was included in my entree, the "Bento Box". Besides the soup it included salad, California rolls, Shrimp Shumai and vegetable tempura. The salad was provided at an wonderful salad bowl. That was a surprise as I have never seen a salad bar in a Japaneses restaurant before. It was a huge salad bar worthy of a steak house with everything fresh that you could imagine. All the food in my Negimaki Dinner Bento was delicious. My dining partner ordered the Deluxe Sushi Platter. It was beautifully platted with a great variety of fresh and delicious fish; tuna, salmon, yelllowtail and sea bass. Most amazing of all, besides the great salad bar and wonderful service is the very reasonable prices. This is a restaurant to come back to many time, and we will.

Nice place

By Luciana A |

I went to this restaurant on a rainy monday, it's a nice place to eat, but don't ask for udon if you don't like spicy food! Chicken teryaki is a good choice.

Perfect for an affordable lunch with family

By dallasmom57 |

Visiting Manhattan with our two teenagers, we wound up with a couple of hours to spare and no set plan for where to eat. Everyone was hungry for sushi. We were walking Downtown from the Port Authority transit station, and decided to just ask Siri for "nice sushi restaurants near us." Siri dutifully listed several places, all of which looked nice onscreen, but seemed a little fancy and pricey. Then, we just happened to spot Asuka, just a quick crosswalk away from us. Hunger won out -- and we were not disappointed. It is a simple, modern place, with friendly waitstaff. The sushi lunch specials were tasty and HUGE, especially for the price ($9 for a two-roll lunch with soup or salad, $12 if you added an extra roll). Normally, we finish every bite when we eat sushi together, but we actually couldn't finish the last couple of pieces. Everyone's favorite roll was the salmon jalapeno maki -- strips of fresh, green jalapeno gave a clean, grassy, not-too-spicy bite to the delicious salmon roll. Delicious and a great value!

Easy and Fun

By DeliciousNewYork |

As you enter Asuka, there is a gentle water fall. If you order the right thing, you dinner comes gently lit from underneath with colored lights. And what you order will be delicious. The wait staff is solicitous, just the right amount. The ambience can be quite lively, but I have not been there when it has been too noisy.

Birthday Dinner.

By wagner15 |

Recently went to Asuka for my wife's birthday celebration. There were nine people in our group and we were very well taken care of. The food was wonderful and very well priced. 2 for 1 drinks doesn't hurt either. Lots of food options, even for those people who do not eat raw sushi.

Decent

By Mac |

I ordered the sushi combo lunch platter (spicy salmon and sweet potato) and it was decent. My order was ready and hot when I arrived so I could tell they timed it well and the sushi itself was decent. It was filling and fresh; however, I wasn't a fan of their miso soup. It tasted pretty bland as if it came out of a can or box. I'm not sold on this place being the best (takeout) in the neighborhood but it has had an A rating consistently for at least a year. Food for thought lol.

Sushi and sushimi a strength

By JOHN W |

We had dinner for 3 there on a Saturday night. Booked on OpenTable but still had to wait 10 minutes - no problem really as they have a bar. All the food was very good, and serves on the large size. Prices were on the lower side for what was served. Cocktails were reasonably priced and well made. This is not a wine pairing Japanese - with very limited choices. Sushi were terrific - neatly made and presented. We liked the salad bar - which strangely came with pickled chillies (most unJapanese) and dolmades - Greek stuffed vine leaves. But their let out is that they are fusion. My only issue with the meal was the presentation of the sushimi - it was sliced WAY too thick. The selection of the muscle and direction of carving (certainly not slicing) was very good. No connective tissue. But the slices were 1cm (about 1/2 inch) thick! On the plus side - of very good quality.

Best Japanese restaurant so far!

By Danny K |

We loved it! Excellent food, very very delicious and interesting, great timing, everything! But best of best is definitely staff!!! So professional, friendly, fast. We really enjoyed and we can't wait to come back.

Perfect NYC sushi restaurant

By 1443B |

Really terrific experience here. Perfect dinner with friendly service, solid sushi and calm environment. Both sushi rolls I had were solid and the menu is extensive without being overwhelming. I’d definitely return.

good spot for lunch

we were a group of 12 on Black Friday, so we had a variety of Japanese food, sushi, salmon, vegetable plates, miso; all of us felt very happy with the food and the service.Happily it was busy but not too crowded and we didn't feel rushed. We came upon the place somewhat by accident, and because of its convenience to Penn Station, and we'd go again

Fantastic Japanese Food, Fantastic service.

By downunder2207 |

Whilst staying in Chelsea last month we discovered this wonderful Japanese restaurant. We mainly ate here at lunch time to take advantage of their specials. The Bento Lunch Box was very good value for money. The food was delicious and plentiful. We ate here probably on five occasions and all the meals were tasty. We also popped back one evening for their happy hour. Two drinks for the price of one. I just loved the cocktails! We enjoyed their starter food as well. Highly recommend. The staff were great and helpful.

Good vegetarian options

By EJHSydney |

This was a real find. Japanese food is usually not a good choice for vegetarians, but there are quite a few good optionshere. Also lots of seafood for seafood lovers, a good salad bar at lunch, and a few choices of wine or sake by the glass. No espresso coffee, but green tea. Everyone is helpful. The food comes quickly, but we didn't feel rushed. Love the water feature.

Great place to have a Japanese dinner

This place has very reasonably priced sushi, and the service is efficient and quick. The sushi was really tasty. I highly recommend it .

Delicious food - affordable price

By Diane G |

While spending the day in Chelsea we went to Asuka for lunch. Their lunch specials are very affordable and delicious. The service was awesome. Very clean. Would definitely go back for another meal.

Come for the ambiance, stay for the amazing food!

By Scuba2012 |

At first glance, this place looks like a typical lounge or trendy bar that just happens to serve Sushi. You see them everywhere. Even the menu is rather generic. But once the food arrives your perspective completely changes. Everything is ridiculously fresh and delicious! And there are also several items not on the menu (or nestled away on the back) that are out of this world. Including Kumamoto, live scallops and Uni! The staff is also quite friendly and passionate about the food they serve. Highly recommend if in the area.

Happy hour and happy eating

By RayBannon |

First time visitor last night - two for one happy hour - something called a Tokyo Mojito that hit the spot after a cross-country flight. Dinner bento box - California roll was a little dull...tempura shrimp and veggies first rate, and some steamed dumplings. Came with an OK but somewhat undistinguished salad bar. Attentive service. Very loud atmosphere, or at least it seemed to me..

High Quality Sushi

By AF1234 |

We stumbled upon this place accidentally while walking through the neighbourhood, and we were very glad to find it! Upon our arrival the place was quite busy during dinner time, but we didn't have to wait too long before being seated. The ambience immediately caught my attention and made me feel positive about the place. The sushi was delicious and of high quality. With a combo dinner you get a choice of a soup or salad. If you choose the salad, you can help yourself to a fresh salad bar which offers a great variety of vegetables and dressings. A great addition to the meal! The service was great, and the price was affordable, especially for the quality and the amount. I would definitely recommend.

Great Sushi, Really good Lychee Martini, but when your done "get out"

By Mavesv |

Sitting at the fun window table, we were really happy tourists taking a break from the hectic city , ordered 2 lychee martini's and 5 different rolls. The Sushi was fresh, and really tasty - the rice was cooked perfect. the Lychee Martini's were built well enough for a second round! Yummy. It was Saturday night, the place was busy , We looked but, we did not see a line at the door - however, when there were 2 pieces of sushi still left, we think each server in the restaurant came trying to remove our plates - all being police but, clearly wanting us to leave as they removed different dishes one by one. We were not sitting more than an hour and really thought we'd spent enough to relax for a few minutes after the last bites lingered, but, they must not have. Go for the Sushi and drinks - but, make sure you are ready to move out swiftly when you are done.

NOT JAPANESE BUT CAN DO IT :)

By ErMatador |

As per the ironic title. Asian cuisine generally with a predominance of sushi/Sashimi. Average reception. Friendly service. Sashimi cut with an ax... one centimeter high! Sushi rice and roll sufficient (good quality but falling apart) Right price. An unpretentious place Worth a pass if you like the genre.

Delicious and expensive but worth it!

By Pernilla F |

The menu was varied with a good and specific range, neither too much nor too little. We shared a sushi for two and it was to much food for us. We couldn't eat it all. The service was good. They were attentive without being obtrusive. In summary, the visit was one of the best I've been to for being at a sushi restaurant. The only downside was that it was expensive, although we got a lot of food.

Sushi Dinner

We were walking around the high line and on our way to the 23rd St station and came upon this place. We ordered 4 rolls and they were all great, the best one was the Eal. Very nice service and authentic sushi kitchen.

Good sushi right near the Cinema

By DestinationMoon |

Was looking for a simple, unpretentious restaurant for after a movie at the Bow Tie Cinema. Asuka is right across 8th Avenue on 23rd Street. Good thing I made reservations, as it was packed by 6:30 in the middle of the week. This is a small restaurant, with tightly packed small tables and a high noise level. But service was good, quick and friendly. There was a happy hour with two for one drinks that included the warm Saki. Best deal was the sushi/sashimi platter for two - a good selection of sushi. sashimi and a tasty roll, plus miso soup or salad bar. Fish was fresh and mostly large pieces. This does not seem the place for the big wooden "boat" with artistic sushi layouts to share on social media. The fish was served on a regular platter, but there was plenty of it, fresh, and very reasonably priced for midtown New York City. There is a reason this place seems very popular.

inexpensive and very tasty.

Healthy, high quality products and low prices. I often visit sushi places but the Asuka was offeres a truly amazing experience. Great choice, fresh and tasty products, good service.

Surprising good sushi in Chelsea

By JustACityBoy2 |

Ate at Asuka Japanese Lounge before going to see a movie in Chelsea. I was pleasantly surprised with my sushi combo platter. Fresh, tasty and well presented. The service was excellent and you have a choice of having a served salad or making your own at the salad bar. I recommend this restaurant for a very good and affordable sushi meal.

Excellent food, fast, attentive service.

By LeSte_04 |

I needed a quick dinner on a Saturday night, got a table at 6:30 immediately. I tried the Chilean Sea Bass appetizer (excellent, flavorful), the Miso Soup (good), Avocado Tempura pieces (OK). Server was very fast and available. Main meals at other tables looked very good and I'd like to go back when I have a little more time.

Food is good...service is strange.

By Rick P |

We live in the neighborhood and pass Asuka quite often. Since this restaurant reopened (new name after a supposed run-in with the Dept. of Health) it's always pretty crowded at dinner time. They have a happy hour and at times have live music inside. The food is really good for a moderate scale Japanese restaurant. Generous portions always, so be aware not to over order. When you sit at the Sushi Bar, you are served by the restaurant manager/owner. Strange little man he is, and not very gracious. We went during happy hour this time and I ordered a beer (2 for 1). I finished the beer about half-way through the meal and the manager was no where to be found. After we finished, he reappeared and asked me if I wanted another beer. I said 'no', would have been nice to enjoy one for the second half of the meal. He then informed me that I needed to ask for the second beer and I had not done so. After telling him not to bother, he came back holding the second beer. I left it on the bar, unconsumed. So because of the strange service, we now order delivery food from Asuka. Like I said, the food is very good. We just skip the service part (they do deliver in a timely and friendly manner). Keep the manager in the kitchen, or wherever you need to keep restaurant managers.

Great service

By Justineooh |

We went to Asuka with our kids on New Years Day. While the food was good, the thing that impressed us the most was the service. While our server was very attentive, so was everyone else. Unused items were cleared from the table immediately, water glasses remained full, and food and drinks came promptly. And all this while they were otherwise quite busy in the restaurant. Also, they were kind and patient with our younger kids. Overall, we felt very welcome and well taken care of...plus, we really liked our food, too. We would definitely go back!

Great Happy Hour

By BaronFunkhauser |

2 for 1 beer, sake, wine, and cocktails in Chelsea! I work near Asuka and go here every couple of weeks for drinks and appetizers. Great service, food, and atmosphere.

Awesome sushi!

By jbeem_goGiants |

Have the Angry Lobster Roll and Coconut Shrimp Roll. If they are missing a kick, add a little more wasabi. Every ingredient tastes fresh, and you can literally taste each one. Delicious!

Supreme tempura

By Architecture and food |

I have come back to nyc wanting to have tempura here again and was not disappointed. Just fantastic, large portion snd wonderfully fresh. My wife had sushi rolls also very fresh

Friendly service but food was mediocre at best

By JetSetJessa |

Couldn't get into our normal Sushi spot so decided to try asuka . As friendly as the service was we were not impressed by the food . It was beyond basic and some items were just not edible. Would not recommend this for a sushi expert . If you know your fish you will not be happy at this spot . It's great for a California roll- edamame or Shumai . Not Toro or ikura . The sake special was the best part of the meal . Loved the server and the hostess but we will not be back

great for groups to enjoy good sushi and drinks

By Hagar08540 |

went here a couple of times with colleagues after long days, great place to eat well and wind down with a drink. Order a big batch of mixed sushi to share and let yourself be surprised

ELEGANT DECOR

Wonderful experience wait staff was very attentive. Food was excellent a little different in regards to having a salad bar. Very enjoyable evening.

Value & Good Japanese Dining

By Visitors4 |

It isn't often to find a Japanese restaurant that is reasonable in price with good food and in a nice ambience. Asuka was a surprise find for us! We dined here for lunch and had the lunch bento boxes which included a salad and miso soup - all for at the price points of $9.75, $10.50, $11.75 (the last one for sashimi). The salad was one of the freshest ones I have had - crisp, clean. The miso soup was generous in portion. The bento box assortment was very good and filling. The sashimi box included 5 decent thick sized fish. Wait staff was friendly and efficient. My water glass test was met without my request - glasses were filled when not full. The decor is modern. Not a large restaurant but decent size for NYC. There is a small bar. Lots of locals dining here including patrons who are dining by themselves. Will return to Asuka when in the area!

Very crowded and very pricey

By Leon T |

It was extremely crowded on a weekday night, people nearby were shouting so hard you could not have a normal conversation with your own table. I would've expect the prices to be adequate, but they're higher than we expected. 60$ (with service) for 2 rolls, apetizer, a cocktail and 2 beers. Here's a tip: cloud 9 roll is extra spicy!

Good customer service n food

By Piyumi R |

Went there last weekend with a bunch of friends. They were very patient accommodations us given the number of people I went with. I'm very happy with how they took the time to make all of us happy with our requests. Sushi was good and I liked their drinks.

Neighborhood sushi and Japanese

By motherJo |

I have lived in this neighborhood 35 years and not sure how long this neighborhood gem has been here but because our regular Chinese was crowded tonight we decided to go here for dinner. It's Christmas day and place packed. My sushi with salmon and tuna and my son's katsu were both good choices. We will be back soon

Affordable Japanese Meal in NYC

By Kelly L |

I went here last week with some friends for dinner before a show. The restaurant was very crowded on a Saturday night! We made an advanced reservation ( I recommend this) and got the table within a few minutes of the reservation time. I'm not a huge sushi fan, so I ordered the teriyaki chicken platter. It was huge. It could easily be shared by two people. It came with at least two thin but very long pieces of chicken, steamed cabbage, veggies like cauliflower and broccoli, and a side of rice. We also got a salad included with the entree, and I got to assemble my own (American) salad and covered it with ginger dressing. We ordered beer and sake for drinks, but their cocktails also looked great! The tempura rolls my friend ordered were also delicious. By the time I paid for my meal, it was less than $25.00. Winning!

Great Japanese Cuisine

By Hugh |

Great Japanese cuisine in Chelsea right on 23rd St. This is a fantastic place for a very fine Japanese meal while you're strolling around Chelsea or looking for a convenient pre theater spot. The food is autrhentic and very good,. The soft shell crab was awesome

Amazing

By Sharon B |

After a few days of burgers and heavy food, I wanted sushi and found Asuka sushi. They have an extensive sushi menu. Prices for food and drinks are half what we paid anywhere else in NY but the quality of food was amazing. The lobster sushi and salmon sashimi were incredible. The restaurant was packed on a Sunday evening so this is a popular spot. Would highly recommend.

Great lunch specials

By Robert H |

This place was just around he corner from us and had lunch specials daily. So we decided to check it out. We walked in and was seated right away. They had all like of special ranging from $8-$12 depending on why you like. I got the 2 roll special for $9.00and my friend got the sty fry chicken for $8.50. The food was delivered with in a few minutes of ordering. The tools where very fresh and very good. If your on 23rd street in NYC stop. U and give them a visit you will not be disappointed!

Great neighborhood restaurant in Chelsea

By Chick777 |

We stopped by here because we were in the neighborhood for lunch. They have happy hour every day from 5-9 and it included 2 for 1 cocktails ($8), beers($5) and sake. This would be a great place to have some drinks. We had a sashimi appetizer special for $14 and it came with three different types of fish and 6 very healthy pieces. The bento box was standard but good portions. My husband had some sushi and sashimi and said the fish was very fresh. Nice little restaurant in Chelsea.

Great sushi

By Matt |

Picked this spot as it was close to the comedy club. Had to wait a little (but we hadn't booked, so to be expected). Once we had a table, the staff were great. We ordered sushi and I ordered some ramen. Be warned... its a big bowl! Couldn't finish it all after the amount of sushi I ate beforehand!

Excellent sushi, great service

By peppergreen |

We found Asuka after learning it would be a two hour wait for a table at our first choice. While not in the same class as that place as far as creativity and unique fare, Asuka was surprisingly good, with the all-important quality of the fish and preparation being first-rate, along with immediate seating and super prompt and friendly service. Hard to beat that.

Worth it!

By Tony P |

Awesome sushi. We had an assortment of rolls and sushi and EVERYTHING was fresh and really good. Salmon belly and tuna sushi was melt in your mouth and the rolls, as if I could remember the names from their fantastic selection, were amazing. Great food, but the service FAR surpassed it. Seriously attentive waitress and bartenders. Great experience!!!

Skip the salmon

By Tracey K |

So disappointed—-The teriyaki salmon was over cooked and dry. It has very few veggies with it and the sauce was bland. Very bland.

Good sushi in noisy restaurant

By Lotsofpeppers |

After walking more than 15 miles in the city we were really ready for a good sushi meal. We were quite happy to find Asuka, and even more happy that they had a table for us as it was a Saturday night and quite busy everywhere. We found the menu a bit overwhelming as there were so many different things to choose from and so many possibilities for menus. In the end we just ordered some sush rolls and miso soup. We liked the food, though I did not see a lot of difference between the spicy tuna and the spicy salmon. Service was good and efficient. The only thing is the acoustics…. As I said, it was busy (and we were tired) but it was almost impossible to understand each other across the table. How difficult would it be to make some changes to the place, so the acoustics get a little better? If I were the owner I would certainly invest a little in this.

Nice, reasonably priced lunch

By RLF1967NYC |

This restaurant is a jewel. Five of us had a perfectly fine lunch. Everyone enjoyed the tasty food and lovely atmosphere. Now, I had the bento box with Teriyaki beef. Although it was utterly delicious, the beef was a tad too well done for my taste. Still, the overall perspective results in a conclusion that we all had an enjoyable, reasonably priced lunch. I do recommend this restaurant if you are in this area of Manhattan AND you are in the mood for Japanese or Thai food. The menu is limited, but I actually prefer that. Enjoy.

Huge

By Architecture and food |

We had a meal a couple of days ago and I love tempura and my wife loves udon so this looked good. Good prices and nice beer. But we didn’t calculate on the portion sizes and had too much food. Both tempura and udon were great but do much food - consider sharing a course if you come here or come really hungry

Good Japanese and a fun venue

By davidmoniz |

I have eaten here many times, including take out, and I have never been disappointed. it is a fun, trendy atmosphere with good service. If you are in the neighborhood and in the mood for Japanese, it is recommended.

One of My Favorite Places
