We ate/dined there and we really went to try the very famous burger and it didn't disappoint, really good, the only bad thing is that since we had no reservation is we sat in the bar (which is at the bottom) and it is not very comfortable and there is not as much atmosphere as upstairs but it is worth it and more with reservation!

Incredible experience at Au Cheval. New General Manager (Preciously a GM at 4 Charles Prime Rib) runs an excellent experience. Highly recommended. Will be back again and again and again.

We were a party of 5. Fantastic burgers, Mac and cheese, salads and desserts! Everything was great! Can't say enough good things about the food. Nice atmosphere and service as well! We will be back!

Could not get a reservation in Chicago and happened to be in New York and found out their was an Au Cheval in New York. Burger was great and the thick cut bacon was an interesting addition. Service was great also.

This is a truly terrific restaurant. Its cheeseburger is spectacular, the rest of the menu is quite good, the drinks are strong, the space is beautiful, and service is friendly and attentive. Order the cheeseburger and, if you have room, the chocolate cream pie.

Au Cheval embodied the hip Ny rrestaurant that we saw on TV, without the attitude. We had a nice lunch there. Highly recommended when you visit NY. We went without reservation at around 1.30pm and were seated immediately. The place was decorated in an industrial/clubby ambience with wooden accent and deep leather seats. Music was fast and dominant. We ordered the cheeseburger with extra bacon and egg, foie gras scrambled eggs, thick cut bacon and general jane chicken. The thick cut bacon and foie gras dish were the bomb! The thick cut bacon was meaty, juicy, sweet, smoky, salty, tender and I am running out of adjectives to describe it. A must order! The foie gras and scrambled egg was creamy, savory and a hint of sweetness from the caramelized onion gravy. Explosion of flavors in your mouth. Cheeseburger and general jane chicken were good, but not as mind blowing as the above. We will definitely come back when we are in NY

Truly best burger we had in NYC. A huge bonus, they had Guava Gose on tap from my fave Hamilton brewer Collective Arts. It’s not cheap, but you get what you pay for!

My husband wanted to visit here after the reviews on YouTube, we tried the burger and it was ok. For me the seating area was cramped and the table was in close proximity to others and the place was just loud hence why for me this was barely a 4 could never be a 5.

Came here straight off the plane. All a little jet lagged and with a massive appetite! Madison served us and was brilliant, very helpful and ensured we didn’t over order. We tried the burger, the fried chicken, the steak sandwich and a salad plus chips all to share. The burger and wings were definitely both hits. The steak sandwich was nothing special in comparison. The desert we shared was incredible! Would definitely recommend this hidden gem.

Dined here with a friend on a Sunday night. Waited around thirty minutes for a table but it was so worth it. Stellar service from Scott who had no problems accommodating a keto-meal. The double patty cheeseburger served in a “lettuce bun” was possibly the best I’ve ever had. My friend concurs. Prices are fair for NYC too. Our neighbor had a dish of fried, spicy chicken that looked delicious as well. Strongly recommended.

Delicious comfort food is served here in generous portions. The always buzzing Au Cheval, which humbly calls itself a diner, is a well managed, very popular eatery with rustic decor, an open kitchen and a very long counter.

Signature burgers but really enjoyed (and was surprised by) everything else, particularly the bone marrow and fried chicken. Potatoes are deep fried using cow fat which is washed down by an extensive booze list and cozy ambiance. Staff is also friendly and fit, not sure how they can resist such temptation unless the know something we don’t. Skip 2 meals and hit the gym before going, food is delicious.

The four of us had a fun evening. The place is great and the egg burger is yummy. Shame about the cocktails. My mezcal penicillin was weak. I could only taste the lime, no smokey, no spicy, no mezcal, no ginger. Prices are reasonable.

The bacon & egg in my opinion is mandatory on this burger. I have heard this burger compared to the burger at 4 Charles as pretty much the same or similar but since I’ve not of yet had the burger at 4 Charles I cannot myself make any determination on the matter. Delicious regardless ! Wedge salad was very tasty too.

Entry to the restaurant was through an alley, unexpected surprise as we entered off this alley to a high energy music filled restaurant, still crowded at 11pm. Food was great, we had burgers, fries with a very flavorful chipotle aioli and a kale salad. Service was on point and glasses were always full. If I can find my way back to this restaurant on my next visit, I will definitely dine there again!

The atmosphere and the staff are amazing I was brought here by my friend when u arrive at night it looks dodgy from outside but when u step in the vibe is good

Great burguer, great bar. Nice ambiance. Ordered teh single burger which is actually a double, added the thick cut bacon, and it was one of the best ive had!! The fries are very fresh tasting, very good spot, will return

The food and the service was excellent We ordered burgers and they were amazing maybe the best burger we ate!!! I definitely recommend it👌🏻

Recommended by frnd.. Ordered DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER...😋 with farm egg.. it's out of world.. one of the must try Burger in NYC. Crowded and worth waiting.. Another best thing is the atmosphere which gives lively experience to have tasty and the service and hospitality is also the best to experience it... don't miss it.

I didn't order the bologna sandwich because I doubted the gourmet-ing of the most basic lunchmeat meat. Bologna? Come on! My friend ordered it and I was offered a full half. YESSS! Bring it on. I wish this was lunchmeat because I'd take it to work every day. Fabulous. The burger, my menu selection, was jaw dropping delicious. Go ahead, add the egg amdnbacon. I trusted the staff recommendation. The drink prices were high and caught me by surprise but overall, the experience was worthy of 5 weighty stars.

Based on the food, this review would be 4/5 - the food was generally pretty good. The attitudes of the people working there is the problem. I walked in and said I was single and fine sitting at the bar. So the hostess puts me right next to the guy placing orders for the kitchen. The ordering dude has a very long, loud, booming voice - probably makes him better at his job but very difficult to sit next to. Why was I seated there? No idea. When others were seated at the bar, they were placed as far away from him as they could given the space. My waitress did not check in until I was nearly done with my dinner. When she brought the bill, I said her tip would be affected because the hostess sat me right next to the guy yelling food orders. She said “You should know that tips don’t affect the hostess just me”. I said “Well, you can tell her”. My check - for one burger, mashed potatoes, and one old fashioned came to $79. I put down a $100 bill and she brought me a 20 and a 1 - no change. So I could either tip her $1 or $21. Given her attitude, I chose $1 (I would have left $15-18 normally, a minimum of $12 even in this case) Congratulations to the waitress who hurt her own tip by copping an attitude and not even providing change.

This menu is certainly for meat lovers. The burger was truly delicious and the fries great along with it. I would recommend a stop in if you can. Note the single burger is actually two patties. There's also a double burger on top of that. Atmosphere is cool as well and getting there may be a little tricky, but if you're walking down an otherwise empty alley, you're in the right spot.

Really cool and place you wouldn’t think exhisted down this small tony street. Once inside your transcend into a very nice restaurant. Dinner consisted of salads fried chicken cheeseburgers and wonderful fries. Great martini. Denise just had salad and Chris and Kim spilt the burger Service was excellent

Burger Burger Burger ! One of the best in the City. Steak Tartar was also amazing. The space is elegant yet casual; great Tribeca Vibes

Was awaiting the best burger of my life but was not impressed. Our wedge salad was heavy on the dressing. Our burger was average and for the price I would say below average. The fries again are fair. The Mac and cheese was great and the key lime pie was good but I don’t think you need 6 inches of whipped cream. Would not go back.

We came for the burger, stayed for the steaks. My girlfriend who's a pescaterian really enjoyed the branzino. Must get the bacon/egg burger (+avocado), foie gras, branzino and rib eye. Save room for the lime pie and chocolate pie. The cocktails are off the hook! Tokyo old fashion and blood orange tequila margarita are the best ones.

Lounge like ambience, bar type food choices, in a rather unique neighborhood. Plenty of galleries around for pre-meal excursions. If possible, sit in the circular banquet, it is much better than the regular dining table. Foods are rich in flavor. Beef tartare us the best. Good selection of beers. Excellent place for getting together with friends.

First of all the waitstaff was superb and so attentive that I have to complement them first! The main event was the single burger w thick bacon and garlic aioli. Along with the Hash-browns /the duck fat - I inhaled it all and relished in the calories! So yummy!! The atmosphere was warm comfy and dark - the music was also super cool! It was a great experience! While maybe not as amazing as some other Burger places in the city - Because Au Chevals’ burger has a lot going on, while others focus on the meat itself - This was as good with all the ingredients! I will definitely go back!

We went in the soft opening days. Its much bigger than I expected. I had thought I'd get a good burger but my gosh, its so much more. Two small quarter pound patties (nice charring on 4 surfaces probably enhanced the flavour); onions, pickles and a gentle mustard and a soft bun. I expect I'll have a hard time getting a table on my next visit.

The location is not where you expect in Tribeca - however it adds to the character of the establishment. We went on the 3rd day after they opened to the public at lunch time - there was a 45 minute wait upon arrival - however we sat at the designated Sawada coffee shop seating behind the hostess where we ordered off of their Drinks menu - they have a great assortment of local brews and awesome cocktails that fit with the space perfectly. Seating - After a brief wait (less than quoted from the hostess) we where seated in a beautiful booth right on the corner - perfect for people watching and looking at the kitchen prepare meals - (we are suckers for that) People - Since we went on the 3rd day and at lunch time it was not the crowd that you should expect - every influencer/food blogger was there - however you can see the locals chilling and taking everything in. Service - The staff is very very nice - they have the makings of great service however since the restaurant is pretty new you do have to go with that in mind - some mistakes where made however nothing to bash the servers for - it is part of an opening however you do see the makings of great service at this establishment - - Food Alright - this is where the place shines - the burger is as amazing as the Chicago location. The Burger was nothing short of AMAZING - it lives up to the hype that all the pseudo food critiques give it and then some, but if you are only going for the burger you will missing put on some real gems - the General Janes Fried chicken is out of this world - the Bone Marrow is at another level and the bologna sandwich is the unexpected winner, make sure if you will order the burger you should only order the single just to leave some space for the other items on the menu - get it with all the fixings (bacon + egg). what i liked the most about the restaurant is the Lighting - it felt really well lit (not great for Instagram photography but great for focusing on your friends and the food) All in all i would most definitely return to keep trying more items on the menu and also once they open the bar in the basement area as that looks amazing in addition would highly recommend this place for people that are in the area or that just want to have great food.

Eating at Au Cheval was a dream come true. Located in an obscure side lane off Walker Street, I came early and had a cappuccino from the café inside the restaurant. When my table was ready, I ordered the famous double cheeseburger with fries. It arrived and to my delight was a manageable portion. The fries came in a parchment lined cone with aioli which was so tasty that I smeared it on the meat. The juicy burger was mouth watering with a double patty and sliced cheese. Did I have room for dessert? The kitchen sent house made salted caramel ice cream with a tiny jug of hot fudge sauce with their compliments. This was a surprise. Service here was excellent. Antonio and Clayton at the front desk were personable and welcoming. Marvin, who gave me ice to add to the water, had a smile. Bri, short for Brittney, was charming and described the menu nicely. Michelle asked me if I had eaten enough. I requested a wheelbarrow. Highly recommended.

Nice atmosphere, great tasting food and service was amazing. Most paces like this you don't get the service this place 110%

I live in nyc and had heard about the place. Checked it out for dinner. The double cheeseburger was ok for me but nothing to write home about. Their double cheeseburger ($21.99) did not come with french fries which would have cost another ($11.99). The beer was very good. The ice cream with chocolate syrup was good. The service was good and the place was relaxed and comfortable. With tax and tip I spend about 47 dollars for one cheeseburger, a beer and ice cream for desert. I would not go back to Au Cheval for a cheeseburger. Maybe a cold tap beer on a hot day could work for me.

Au Cheval is the definition of a hip classy high end restaurant, everything oozed NYC ... from the music to the decor to the waiters in their cool hipster outfits!! Went for lunch and the burgers were superb!!! I opted out of the bacon as an extra but opted straight back in when I saw the streaks of bacon..... never opt out of the bacon at Au Cheval!! The burgers arrived with a side of fries and it was all delicious could not fault the food at all but be prepared to spend at least $80.00 on food and drink and that is for two people but if you want to splurge and have a great burger Au Cheval is highly recommended!

Fantastic restaurant! A hidden gem in nyc, atmosphere and service were great. Food was delicious, would definitely recommend the Mac and cheese and the burger. Will definitely return.

Came here solo and was treated well. Kind staff, good wine! Tired to return for dinner and it was packed! Not surprised because they do their job well.

This place is great. Simple menu. Great food. Single burgers are actually double. Slab of bacon and fried egg on top. What could be better. Side of fries, duck fat hash, fried chicken for appetizer. Save up your calories and sodium intake and then go. And prepare for salads for weeks after, but during, it’s quite an indulgent visit. Enjoy, and don’t tell your doctor...

I came here excited to try Au Cheval, but the service completely ruined the experience. The front host staff were extremely rude from the start. There was no transparency at all about the wait time. The answers were vague and the staff looked annoyed when I checked in. After waiting an hour in the dark, I finally got a text that my table was ready, only to be sent away again without explanation. When I followed up, they acted irritated that I even asked. Once we were finally seated, the service continued to be dismissive and unprofessional. The burger itself was very good, probably a 4/5, but everything surrounding it was so bad that I would not recommend this place to anyone. Food this good cannot save a business if the service is this consistently terrible. I will not be posting pictures on socials or recommending Au Cheval to friends because of how unwelcoming and discourteous the staff were. The service is working against how good the food and ambiance are. I’m sad to even write a review like this. Spend your time and money elsewhere.

We went there after reading some good reviews on the restaurant. But what a disappointment! The single cheeseburger was too salty and filled with a sickening dressing, no vegetable apart from a pathetic pickle served on the side. My colleague took a "ribs bologna burger" (cannot remember the exact name) and said that it was not good at all. The meat was some warmed-up ham. 20 dollars for a burger alone, you must add 10 dollars for a cup of french fries, here again, much too salty.

Great space and decor. Good service. But the burgers are NOT the best—far from it especially if you like your burgers rare. They cannot do that. Fries are good. But overall over-priced and not great.

I've been hearing about Au Cheval in NYC for ages and finally got the chance to try it. I'd seen countless pictures of their steak and bone marrow, and I was dying to give them a try. However, I didn't realize they have a different menu during the day than at night. When I visited for lunch, it was their brunch menu, which was heavy on eggs—not exactly what I was in the mood for. I ended up ordering the double cheeseburger since it was the only thing that appealed to me at the moment (the other option was fried bologna). The burger comes by itself, and you have to order fries separately. My waiter, a wonderful and kind gentleman, surprised me by bringing the fries on the house. The restaurant itself is tucked away off Canal Street in a rather dirty and smelly alley, but once you step inside, it’s surprisingly beautiful and spacious. It was pretty busy, with people waiting, but I was seated immediately since I was dining alone. As for the burger, I have to admit, I've had better. It was a bit on the salty side, which I mentioned to the waiter, who was surprised since no one else had mentioned it before. I still ate it all, and it was good, but not the standout I had hoped for. Despite that, I had a nice experience overall, and I definitely plan to return for dinner to try the steak and bone marrow that I've been craving. Next time, I’ll make sure to go in the evening!

Typical New York location. Very trendy and very crowded. Excellent burgers and friendly staff. For an immersive evening in current New York.

Very nice atmosphere. A bar on the lower floor allowed us to wait for a table to become available. The attentive waiter came to pick us up as soon as a table became available. Good value for money with very good quality and well prepared food. Less than $40 per person. Top!

Saturday, 11am. Brunch, Cortlandt Alley. Diner is starting to fill up, snagged a round table for 5 near the bar/kitchen. Bottomless coffee. Foie gras eggs. THE burger. Granola for the kids. Everything was very good and cooked American style (=large portions, lots of sauce). I would qualify this as "high quality comfort food, diner style". Excellent service. Really: get the foie gras scrambled eggs - large portion of seared foie gras ! Could use more dish options for brunch, but anyway we left with no room for dessert.

Really nice restaurant with a great atmosphere. Recommend the double cheese burger (best burger un town). The service was good also.

"Very rude lady at the reception, she manages the tables and sorts the guests who come without a reservation based on her mood and whims. Some she makes wait forever, while others she seats immediately or quickly. There were available tables and bar stools. She selects the guests, and I don’t know by what criteria. I was alone and told her from the beginning that I wanted to sit at the bar and didn't want to occupy a table by myself. There were many couples standing in the waiting area, and they were waiting. She signed me in and told me to wait, even though there were many free bar stools. New guests kept coming in, some without reservations, and they were seated immediately at tables, while others had to wait longer. I’m not talking about guests with reservations. I waited for over 30 minutes and observed the whole thing. She kept moving my name back on her iPad and constantly manipulated the waiting list. The bar stools remained free; no one wanted to sit at the bar. Everyone was waiting for a table. I told her that I wasn’t going to wait any longer and that I was leaving because it was clear to me that she was just pushing me back. Then she said that I could now sit at the bar and the waiter would show me my place. He led me to a place that had been free the entire time. I asked him why I had to wait so long for a spot that was actually free. He shook his head and said he didn't know, he didn't understand it either, and he didn't think it was right, but that's how she does it. I thanked him and told him I was leaving. He said he would get another administrator because of the situation, but I told him I didn’t need that as I was leaving anyway. I asked her at the entrance why she did that, and she argued that it had just become available. I told her that I had been observing and that three bar stools had been free the whole time, and then I just left. She lies boldly and disrespectfully. What kind of way is that to treat customers? It's not worth going to this place; there are many other better places in NY. It’s overrated and overrun just because a few bloggers shot some videos and advertised it." Manager Johnny is Fantastic. This is the offshoot of the famous restaurant in Chicago and it does not disappoint. Much easier to get a reservation and a little more of a younger vibe and crowd. I would highly recommend and will be back many times.

Excellent burger, one of the best I’ve had… the classic 2 burger with egg! Perfectly cooked medium rare! Great place, excellent service, can’t wait to go back!!!

We tried this place for our friend’s recommendation and it’s amazing!! Food is super delicious and rich in taste. Portions are big and the dessert was huge and so so tasty. Service is attentive and friendly! Highly recommended!

Au Cheval is just wonderful-- delicious food, superbly prepared. Generous serves of food and an interesting menu which can suit everyone. Ambient atmosphere and patient ,switched on waiting staff. The best restaurant in NYC.

The burger with the added bacon and egg was outstanding. Easily best burger we’ve ever had. Not sure how to describe how good it was. Chips were yummy too and the service was quick and super friendly.

The hamburgers here are amazing. Drinks choices are great. Great ambience and friendly staff. Recommend making reservations.

I went solo and sat on their counter. Zero issues with that and I actually enjoyed it. The single cheeseburger is actually a double cheeseburger and it’s really good. They prepare it in one way and I liked it. I also had a side of the thick cut peppered bacon and that was wow. You can have the bacon or a fried egg on the burger. Next time I’ll try that.

Excellent meat restaurant near Canal Street station. Perfect and friendly service, modern and clean. Excellent steak and burger. But most importantly the atmosphere is very New York!

The establishment offers a high-quality burger, a pleasant and inviting atmosphere, and exceptionally attentive service. While the pricing may be considered on the higher side, it is likely reflective of the standard cost of dining in New York City.

Great staff and a beautiful interior. There aren’t many vegetarian options on the menu but to be expected at a burger spot. The drinks are wonderful. Rhea helped our group out and she was very friendly and helpful. I loved the drinks Sawada coffee- I kept coming back for the macadamia nut chai my whole trip to NY. The bar downstairs is fun as well, I believe it opens at 6pm.

Very cook vibe restaurant. One of the best cheeseburgers I have ever had in my life... Well worth the reservation made nearly a month prior.

I was in the neighborhood and stopped by after remembering a recommendation from the founder of the New York Burger Club. My server suggested an option that isn’t listed on their regular menu so I had to give it a try!

Delicious hamburger, friendly, polite and helpful staff, characteristic location, suitable for the area. Advised.

Get the burger, upgrade to bacon & egg. You will not be disappointed. Service was also excellent. I would’ve paid double for the burger it’s worth every cent!!

Great place. Did some research on this place before our visit and it did not disappoint. Fantastic atmosphere and decor perfect for NYC. Music lighting ect was just right with attentive service. One of the best burgers I have ever had. Would recommend for a really cool venue without being pretentious, a must visit in NYC for any group.

So the burgers here look good, but what else? I wanted to explore the menu during my visit and unfortunately was left incredibly disappointed with not just the food but the service as well. I can understand that this spot opened up earlier in the year, but during my visit service was a complete mess. Food from other tables were placed on mine three (3!) different times, and the bill for the neighboring table had all kinds of mistakes. I really hope they turn it around. Roasted Bone Marrow - When the dish came out with four huge halved bones, I thought I had made a mistake ("how were we going to finish all this?"). But after spooning the marrow out, I was sorely mistaken. It was extremely shallow! It lacked seasoning, and paired with the red onion jam, all I was getting was jam. General Jane's Fried Chicken - Perhaps its my fault for expecting so much out of what looked like some delicious, glazed fried chicken. Los Angeles has a huge Korean community that has perfected something similar. And in comparison to it, this dish fell flat. It had a good heat, but little else. Hash Browns - Possibly the most salty thing I've ever tasted in my life. Its as if the kitchen forgotten that they had salted it three or four times. The red onion jam made it barely palatable. If it was seasoned properly, this would have been the best thing on the table. Moral of the story: don't be as adventurous as I was, and just come here for the burgers.

4.5/5 Forget the hamburgers you ate! To call @auchevaldiner "Diner" would be a little unfair. A very popular American Restaurant with a nice ambiance, hidden in Cortland Alley, Lower Manhattan but yet undiscovered from tourists. The Double Cheeseburger ($21), which we added to our list as soon as we saw it, was the best hamburger we ate this year. You can add thick-cut bacon ($7) and farm eggs ($3) to the burger, which consists of sharp American Cheddar, pickles, onions and dijonnaise, and two beef patties. I highly recommend making these additions. Good selection of ingredients, good cooking ratio and balance: a very good and juicy burger! The only negative side of the restaurant is the long service time. You have to be a little patient. And don't forget to make a reservation before you go. . . #kaimbros

This restaurant came highly recommended and most certainly didn't disappoint! From the moment you enter the atmosphere is amazing, the staff are extremely welcoming and provide a great introduction to the restaurant. The food, drink and atmosphere is certainly worth the visit. We had the burger and it was fab! The wine was excellent also. Would highly recommend a visit if in NYC.

Au Cheval offers one of the best American burgers you'll ever taste, paired with a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. The overall dining experience is fantastic, making it a great spot for a memorable meal. The location is convenient and adds to the charm, though securing a booking can be a hassle. Despite that, it’s absolutely worth it for the quality and ambiance

This was one of the single worst meals we have ever had. We came here this evening for my husband's birthday. The drinks were fine and the salad was fine, but the burger was horrible. Because it was his birthday, I promised I wouldn't complain in person or return the food. But we also both agreed that the food was well past the returnable threshold. It is one thing for food to be less than the hype. It is quite another for it to be unpalatable. If a restaurant is charging this much for burger, it is a reasonable expectation that it be tasted and salted accordingly. The burger, bun and sauce were all SO INCREDIBLY SALTY that they were not only inedible, but threw our palate for the rest of the meal. It was very hard to taste any of the rest of the food we ordered. The fries and aioli, likewise, seemed very over salted. My husband has been to the Au Coeval in Chicago and loved it. I don't doubt that other diners have had okay food here. But for a restaurant that is not Applebee's, I think there is a reasonable expectation that food be consistent and edible. Such was not the case. Honestly, go to 7th Street Burger (or even Shake Shack) and get a way superior dinner for less than a quarter of the price.

Au cheval has the best Burgers in NYC. The place is hard to find but worth while the ride. The beer selection is local and great.

Wonderful good quality good food served in a great chic surrounding. Service is excellent and the servers know their product. Highly recommend the burger

New diner, short menu but the hamburger delicious and not too fat! They serve the sandwich without French potatoes on side, so you have to pay them apart. The simple hamburger is with two burger and very good bread. Not very cheap but in the average for Tribeca.

The NY location of a Chicago darling Au Cheval is super cool. It is buzzing whenever it is open and the bar rocks. We came in out of the rain and got crazy lucky without a reservation. The tables are super close but hey, make friends! With a decent wine in hand we grabbed a few dishes. This is a place I would come back to in a heart beat. Please follow @joannasable on instagram for more food and travel fun.

I first had been to Au Cheval in Chicago and was blown away by the burger. I had been waiting for their NYC location for a long time. Simply put this is one of the best burgers you will ever eat. Just go! Get a single (two patties) with bacon and egg. They make mighty tasty fries too! Do yourself a favor and make reservations using Resy and avoid a long wait. I went at 4pm on a weekday and traffic was light. It’s a burger Mecca must have.

We were excited to try this diner as a highlight for us in our last trip Stateside was the fantastic burgers and this is billed as the best of the best. Alas it was just ok. We ordered the single cheeseburgers each, one with bacon and one with bacon and egg and shared some fries. The fries were fine, nothing special, and came with a strong garlic aioli. The burgers were also fine, quite tasty, decent buns, no stand out sauce and standard American cheese. There was just nothing wow about them. The bacon we found undercooked, very fatty (thick slabs of fat rather than meat) and tasteless when eaten in the burger. We would definitely skip that addition in future. The vodka pink lemonade was tasty but very small (an inch of drink and a whole glass of ice) for the whopping 16.5 dollar price tag. Service was friendly but there are clearly some execution issues - we were given our fries and half an hour later there was still no sign of our burgers...our server was obviously aware of the issue and dealt with it well, offering us more fries and not charging us for any, but it meant a rather odd eating experience, basically having fries as a starter... We skipped dessert. The venue is nice and the music was great! But overall, we wouldn’t go back (we had an emergency Shake Shack after a late finishing Broadway show another night, which we both agreed we enjoyed more...!)

Great Hamburger, peppered bacon is super tasty! Great music selection! Nice atmosphere and great service. Location is cool, but could be in a better neighborhood - only minus I found.

I love this restaurant and can't wait to return. The entire staff was nice and the drinks were out of this world. I'm not sure what was better between the mac n cheese or the best burger in the world. 5 star experience.

Been wanting to try Au Cheval for a while and it was not convenient on my last trip to NYC, so made sure to check it out this time. Wow, is my first response. You enter down a alley, which made it even cooler to me. Decor is really cool on the inside. Service is excellent and friendly. And the food......awesome!!! Liked it so much that we went 2 days in a row! First visit, I had the burger and I must say, it is one of the best I’ve had. Simply outstanding. The fries are a must as well. My nephew got a salad, so when I went back the 2nd day, I got a salad and it was delicious. Had to get the fries again as well. My nephew ordered the house made bologna sandwich and it was outstanding.... a real surprise. Drinks are great as well. Will definitely be returning in future trips to NYC.

So we were scared of the long wait horror stories but fear not; we came here at 4:30 on Monday and there was zero wait. We walked right in and the service couldn't have been better. Warning: the menu items are huge. They really do serve dinner portions here so be careful how much you order. We ordered the burger with an egg, the bone marrow toast, the foie gras scramble, and the fries with mornay sauce. Boy oh boy is the food rich. The garlic aioli is insane. The bone marrow comes with an entire cow leg! The burger is of course, on point as always. And we made the mistake of ordering dessert. The mille feuille was intimidating coming out but even moreso as the waitress lumberjack chopped it in half. Do yourself a favor and come here quick before the secret's out. They're hidden on an alley between Chinatown and Tribeca. And they even have a lounge downstairs serving hot chicken sandwiches. Another winner!

Lovely burgers, definitely some of the better ones I’ve ever tried. Honey fried chicken and the crispy potato hash with the duck heart is even better.

Tastiest and best burger I had in NYC. Burger was cooked medium rare'ish, which is perfect for me. Liked the cool laid back vibe of the place, low lighting adds to the atmosphere. Would have definitely gone back if I had more time in NYC. Abit on the pricier side but it's worth it...you won't regret it!

No thanks to the lady at the front dest who made us wait for 1.5 hours. Every time we asked, they never gave us a proper anser and made us wait. At least if you going to make people wait for almost two hours put either someone that smiles or understand how hard it is to wait with 4 kids! And ofcourse teaching that person to be respectfull! Food can be good(fom what people wrote) but if you dont show respect you are nothing! Did disrespectful woman was laughing at the end while we were leaving after waiting for almost 2 hours! She dis that on purpose

I have to say, I believe this was the BEST hamburger I’ve ever eaten! It was incredibly good! And the hash brown potatoes were marvelous also. We got there early for our reservation but the host was so friendly & helpful & seated us. I will definitely go back!

Best Hamburger we have ever eaten. By far, was the best experience we had in New York. Excellents beers, tasty food (we had two doubles hamburgers and fried chicken slices) and excellent service. 100% recomendable

Best burger I’ve had in the past 5 years. Bun, beef, bacon, cheese… just spectacular. Overall ambience very cool and hip. Service exceptional.

Having read about their burgers, I had to try it. I included the bacon, but not eggs (not to fond of eggs in general) and I must agree - the best burger I have had in a very long time! The dish does not come with fries or panfried potatoes, but the burger is almost all you can eat so I would only order them if you are sharing. I arrived on a Saturday around 11am, when it was not too crowded, but by noon there were not many empty seats.

Great restaurant tucked in Cordtlandt Alley...fabulous old warehouse with an airy feel. Stopped in after attending an exhibit at a local museum. Had the most delicious burger thin patty’s with cheese....just like burgers of yesteryear! So yummy. The French fries were also beyond tasty.

I had been to Au Cheval 4 years ago in Chicago and have raved about it since. I took my wife to 4 Charles Prime Rib in NYC and while it was great, it didn't meet the hype...but Au Cheval NY did! We went on a Sunday and we had a 4:30 reservation, which I thought was winning the lottery! Resy only takes reservations up until 4:45 and we didn't want to wait (although I did wait 3+ hours in Chicago, and have no regrets). After 4 years of hearing me rave about this burger, my wife finally got to try it, and we both loved it!! They have the friendliest of staff. The restaurant has a nice open feel, and they never made us feel rushed. I had a single cheeseburger with egg and bacon, my wife had a single cheeseburger, and we split fries. Everything was delicious. There is a lot of hype behind this place and the food critics in NYC are horrible and spoiled, this restaurant far surpasses the hype! Please check out this awesome restaurant in TriBeCa, you won't regret it!

This was quite a way to start the day. We were at Au Chevalier for brunch and opted for the famous double cheeseburger and bacon and nachos together with a side of fries. The dishes were huge and delicious. We had an espresso martini and ghost beer to drink. Also very good. There was a slight mishap with our order, which meant service was delayed, but it was handled very well by the staff.

When you drive up you can’t believe what is inside. This is a really cool building and when you open the door you are hit with delicious scents of all the meals coming out of the kitchen but also the packed restaurant and the ambiance as you see people enjoying their incredible menu. We were there on a Sunday and ordered the famous cheeseburgers with this bacon like you’ve never tasted before. Just thinking about it makes me drool and remember. The manager Hasan came over and he said Thankyou for your service for my husband and son and shared his family members that have been in the military including his brother. We were well fed and thought it was such a cool space with great staff. We will never forget that burger. Thankyou!

Delicious burger! Place had a great atmosphere and our waiter was great, cracking jokes with our table. Would recommend trying the burger here!

Great little find , you need to make a reservation , cozy, great hamburgers , bar , atmosphere . Highly recommend in cool part of town

The staff delivered excellent service, and the food was outstanding. We didn’t wait long for a table, and our meals arrived quickly. My partner and I both ordered the burger with mac and cheese—delicious!

Our meal was really good, shared a burger, fries and Mac and cheese which was enough for two of us. The burger was simple but delicious. Nice vibe however we didn’t book so we had to take the next table available which was at the side of the restaurant which was disappointing as away from the atmosphere. If you are going I recommend you book!

By chance we found this restaurant while around Chinatown. We have heard about au Cheval, and their amazing burgers before, but it never came in to our mind to walk in. Officially we didn’t make any reservations, so we had to wait before our table. We were seated just at the entrance. It wasn’t the best table and we had the feeling we were seen as an extra/fast table to service quickly, then rather be seen as guests to pay attention too. In addition, food is great. We had a caesar salad with chicken and the burger with some fries. Burger was delicious, so was the salad. The amount chicken was very little. Also, an extra bite, for instance some croutons would have made the salad perfect. The amount of dressing was quit a lot as well. Would advise to put the dressing at the side. Staff is very attentive, but there is a lack of interest in their guests. The restaurant is very well-attended, so we can imagine that they are busy. Location is great, so is the interior and the whole ambiance. Would definitely recommend to have lunch here.

I had dinner here quite late the day I landed in NY after an almost 10 hr flight. I had booked as it was next to my hotel. They knew I was in NY as a belated bday trip, and surprised me with a dessert and candles at the end of my meal.

I had been wanting to try Au Cheval for a while, so my husband and I decided to stop by one Sunday. They do have reservations on Resy but you have to pay a small fee for person, so we decided to just get there early to beat the rush. They open at 10 AM and we got there at around 10:45. Even though it was half empty, the hostess said there was one table but we'd have to leave by 12:30 for one of their reservations - which was fine because that was plenty of time. To start, we had: Griddle Blueberry Muffin (griddled hot, strawberry jam, salted butter) - I never thought about griddling a muffin but I may need to start doing this. It also came with some clotted cream, and a tiny pitcher of melted chocolate, but that was too much for me. I liked it with just the butter, jam, and cream. Chopped chicken liver (salted butter, toast) - I love a good liver dish (I was the weird kid who liked liverwurst) and this one was right up my alley. It was creamy and served with perfectly toasted bread, and a side of delicious cornichons to cut the heaviness We really wanted to try the bone marrow but they said that it's indefinitely off the menu because of supplier issues. Womp womp. For the main, we shared the double cheeseburger and added bacon + egg. This was probably the most perfect fried egg I have ever seen. I didn't love the bacon because it was pretty salty. But overall, it was a great burger. Was it worth $30? That I'm not sure of. I'm glad that we ended up sharing this because it was pretty heavy. Half was the perfect size, especially since we had already gotten some apps. For drinks, I had the Guava Gose breakfast beer, which was light, fruity, not overly sweet and not too sour. It was perfect. They have a lot of other summer beers that sound good too. My husband had the bloody mary, which tasted pretty basic but I appreciated that they tried to fancy it up with a variety of pickles. We also did a pickleback shot because why not. It was a good thing we had all that heavy food to soak it up because these shots were HUGE - probably twice the size of a regular shot. They ain't messin' around at Au Cheval. I'm glad I got to check this place out, but it's probably not a place I'd go back to again and again.

Downtown in a cool spot. Pretty spacious and I believe there’s a speakeasy too but not sure. The root beer on draft is great. The fries are dope and the burger is very meaty and delicious with the egg and everything on it. Highly recommend. Fast service and just all around great.

My husband and I went here for lunch. I had the burger with egg added. It was a fantastic burger. I can see why it's so highly recommended. My husband had a side of mashed potatoes which he enjoyed. He gives them a 3/5. They also gave us broccoli which we did not ask for. It was charred to perfection. It was great tasting, and that's said by someone who does not care for cooked broccoli. Service was decent. We got a table within a few minutes despite having no reservation.

The food and service is great! Kameu and Seville were our servers and stood out for their friendliness and attentiveness! The burger is our second favorite ever and much more affordable than 4 Charles Prime. The Mac and cheese is in our top 3 which is really saying something. The chocolate pie was excellent too! We come here every time we visit Manhattan.

Really enjoyed our meal. We both went for the double cheeseburger and was definitely up there with one of the best burgers I’ve eaten. But what really impressed me was the service. The waiters answered our questions, took note of our requests, and when we mentioned it was our honeymoon brought over celebratory drinks and dessert, which was very touching. Thanks to the whole team for making it a special meal.

We saw the reviews before we went and knew we had to go, this place did not disappoint. The decor and ambiance is amazing, the staff were amazing helpful and we didn’t have a reservation but they accommodated us. We ordered the burgers and the special fries, amazing, melted in your mouth. Would recommend a visit.

Delicious burger, one of the best I've ever eaten. Generous portion of chips. Polite and helpful staff. I absolutely recommend!!! Well furnished and charming place

Has this place gotten even better? I went back after a 2 year hiatus, and the burger and fries are still the absolute best. The caesar salad was on the lighter side and deliciously citrusy. Service is perfect and the space is large with a warm, casual vibe that fits the menu. This restaurant group knows their business, which is why Au Cheval is always busy.

The burger is definitely worth the hype! We loved our meal here. It was our first night in New York and absolutely set the standards high for the rest of our trip. Super yummy food, great service. Nothing bad to note… we will be returning next time we are in the city 😍

A friend recommended this as an alternative to 4 Charles Prime which you can never get a reservation for. We also shared the Thick Cut bacon as an app. I’mma be disappointed this weekend with my at home sad….thin….crispy bacon. Tisk tisk Trust me and just order it as soon as you sit down...even before drinks. It's that good. We got the Wings minus cilantro (ewww) and they were great, fried crispy and the sauce was just the right amount. The crew also ordered beef tartare and they definitely need to double the amount of bread provided for that...unless you're supposed to heap it on? Had to try the burger..I mean...come on it's Dry Aged and $30...you gotta. After the taste test, it was a tough call between the Dry Aged Tavern Cheeseburger & the Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich. I'd almost say the Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich took a partial lead just cause of the au jus on the side...but burger was delicious. Ordered the baked potato, thinking it was just one...so was shocked that two came out...maybe they heard incorrectly when taking the order? As you'll see below no photos were taken of the sandwiches..we dove right in... Hands down though the best part was the Chocolate Cream Pie….OMG…I need to find that recipe ASAP! We also tried the Key Lime pie which was delicious too however not as good as the Chocolate Cream Pie. And just saw they have a brunch menu? Will be looking to make a reservation for that.

Burgers seldom live up to my high standards. But the burger here does not disappoint! Add to this the beautiful setting and a stellar staff! Will definitely go back!

Absolutely the best hamburger I ever had! Double patties with bacon and egg on top. Beautiful presentation. Stone IPA on tap 👍

Decided to stay downtown after an event and grab a bite: best bet: Chicago's gift to NYC - Au Cheval. Took seats at the bar, effervescent waitress, a few minutes later: two amazing (to look at and to taste) burgers, a plate of crispy potato hash to share, and two delicious drinks. Great atmosphere, good sound level, delicious food. Perfect Choice!

Burgers mediocre service the worst and truly not worth the wait or the hype that has been created on IG

Super burger. Great service. Great ambiance. The desert could be improved. The fries were the best I had in along while. A must go place. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

We loved the burgers! Add bacon, we loved it. But we love bacon. Thought the burgers were ace - juicy but held their shape. Great sauce. Quite pricey at $25 a burger..... with no sides. Only downer - the chips were so saaaaalty they made my mouth like the Dead Sea on a hot day. We tried to brush off the excess crystallised salt but genuinely, the chips were inedible. And at $10 for the chips alone, that’s a bit of a shame. Lovely service. Good ambience.

If like me you like a nice burger within a swanky darkish restaurant then this is the place to go. Obviously being in NYC, it's going to cost you a little more than usual but we both enjoyed our food, the service was great and the vibe was a good one. From the outside it seems nothing down a backstreet, however we were pleasantly surprised when we entered. Its was fairly busy too, just glad we booked online. Recommended!

Ok so the critics have mixed reviews of this place because after all it is trendy and expensive. However I would say it fits in nicely with that particular vibe in NYC. It is sort of laughable that I paid $20 for a burger and $17 for a cocktail yet I turned my nose to the ladies just down the road trying to sell me a knock off LV bag. But all that aside. I was super happy during and after this entire meal so if you consider the “enjoyment” aspect it is well worth it. The staff was superb! Friendly, funny, helpful - all I could ask for. The atmosphere was simply “cool”. The food was really really good. I even had a salad just so I could claim I ate veggies and it was simple but awesome. We were getting on a train later that night to take our son back to Philly and it made it so we were not hungry at all. The drinks were by far my favorite. I had the Hemingway punch and unlike the sweet concoction we made back in college this was grown up and to die for. I say splurge and go!
would go there again any time
We went there during our stay in the near Best Western and had a great time. As we didn‘t have a reservation, they took our number and sent us a message as soon as our table was ready, approx. an hour later. We had a burger and fries, and it was really very good. Service also very good. Would definitely go there again!
