August has moved to Lexington Ave, between 61st and 62nd

Pleasant new surroundings, Italian menu. The Caesar salad was slightly roasted that wilted the romaine lettuce too much. Okay dinner but better restaurants nearby for same money.

THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!

By FoodSource |

Went to August because I was told by a colleague that it was great. My friend and I decided to go for Sunday brunch, got there at 11:00. We were seated in the back, we were the only two people in the restaurant. It was hot, somldering and we were roasting fast!!! We sat there patiently, waited 10 minutes to order two organge juices, only to wait another 15 minutes for service, and even at that, we had to ask for a waiter. We ordered our food and then proceeded to ask if we could move to the front of the restaurant because at this point we couldn't take the heat anymore. Our food arrived 45 minutes later, yes that's right, you read correctly...45 minutes later, and we were the only two people in the restaurant. I ordered the steak and eggs and my friend ordered eggs a la August. Well, my friends eggs were awful...floating in grease, my steak was so cold they should have just given it to me from the freezer. I proceeded to look for a waiter, but there was none to be found, so i went to the chef at the oven and said, I'm sorry my steak is too cold, he proceeded to say, "what do you want me to do about it", I thought to myself, Wow...ok then! I left my dish on the bar counter and responded by saying "nothing I guess", I went back to my table and we left. The hostess chaised us out of the restaurant and said "oh what happened", I proceeded to tell her and all she could say is "well the chef is used to people talking to him"....really I thought!! That's so not the right answer. I told her it was a terrible experience and that I hope people don't support such an establishment that doesn't value it's customers. Don't go to August, they don't care about your support.!!! Give your money and your support to an establishment that enjoys doing what their doing and put pride into their work.

Great dinner and greater hot lava cake!

By Dmt1230 |

Dinner with the family our first night in NYC. Made reservations at August for 8pm and were promptly seated upon arrival. Nice little restaurant with great lively vibe. Service was great...dinner was great...but the hot lava chocolate cake was so great! Let me tell you...you can not beat this hot lave chocolate cake. Trust me...have one.

Fantastic food in a cozy environment

By ColletaM |

This was a great find in the city. We were a party of three and had three appetizers, three main course, a dessert, coffee and a soft drink and paid less than $200 with a 20% tip. The food was superb. Nice sized portions bursting with flavor, We tried the chicken, sea bass, and pork and are were excellent. Service was attentive but not pretentious. A really good find in the city.

small gem

By diamondgirlMichigan |

we loved the friendly service, cute "green house" room, and amazing food. We ate scallops, tender and fluffy as marshmellows, roasted cod, and mushroom risotto better than anything we've had in Italy. Also had the pate for an appetizer. I liked the house made ginger soda, and the wine by the glass was also excellent. Loved walking around the neighborhood, too! Make reservations at this small, trendy place down in the Village.

Great little bistro

We had a wonderful meal here. Very attentive service, solid recommendations from the waiter, delicious food. The lamb chops were cooked perfectly and the grilled octopus was as tender as butter. The steak frites came out a bit cool, but was promptly returned to the kitchen and corrected. If I lived nearby, I'd be in here often!

We went there for my friend's birthday ... lovely italian food, great recommendations, friendly people, cosy atmosphere!

Overpriced, overhyped, and unprofessional

By sandyconcrete |

We planned a lovely evening out of the apartment and decided to try the "new" August. The menu options looked "OK" and the prices were high - but worth it for top food and service. There was a pasta dish under appetizers that sounded delicious - however, one of the 4 ingredients of the dish is tomatoes - I cannot eat whole tomatoes. I politely asked our server for this dish, sans tomatoes. He came back to the table and told us that the chef said "NO". I asked him if he was serious and he said he would check again. He went back to the kitchen, checked with the chef and came back to the table. He said the chef had said "NO again and "yelled at him". My wife tried to order the same dish minus the shaved cheese (allergy). Guess what? Same thing .... After they found out that my wife had an allergy to cheese, they sent over ... wait for is ... burrata. I mean - are you joking? We politely sent it back. We ultimately received our main dished. My wife's fish dish was "fair" and my chicken dish was terribly salty. Not even coffee, dessert, a % off the check? Nothing! The chef had come out to the dining room to sit with other guests and "shmooze" with them .. but did not have the decency to come by our table. He shamefully walked right by us without muttering a word. On the way out, he was standing outside talking to some patrons. Not even a "thanks for coming" or "have a good night". The chef has a lot of growing up to do.

Good mid priced restaurant on LexingtonAvenue

My girlfriend and I booked August for our last night in NYC as it was convenient to our hotel and I'd been past I a couple of times and it always seemed busy with a nice vibe. We had booked for eight and I'm guessing the place was about two thirds full. It was a bit of a celebration so I asked for a glass of champagne to start. I was a little disappointed that it was served with one of the mini Moet bottles but maybe they don't have the demand to have later bottles and at least you are guaranteed that it won't be flat. For starter I had the Tuna Tartare, my girlfriend the Crispy green tomatoes (just one of five starters with a tomato theme!). both were good but not exceptional and the same could be said for the mains where we ordered the seared scallops and grilled Branzino. The Branzino was really flavoursome and its not a fish I'd had before. Aside from the champagne we also had a bottle of Austrian Veltliner. Total bill was over $200 but the little bottles of Champagne were $22 each and you are on Lexington. without alcohol and service the food was a reasonable $108. a nice place, good service and more reasonable than some of the restaurants in the same vicinity but I found that in the two weeks I was there that a couple of blocks away from a fashionable area can reward you.

Great little find

Fablous experience. Sunny Sunday afternoon for late lunch and the restaurant was heaving. Sat outside as it was gloriously sunny (they have a retractable roof). The cocktails were delicious. The staff, charming. engaging and friendly. DELICIOUS food but simple. Execellent dining experience. Will be back for more!

Great date venue

By Penny198 |

Nice spot in bleecker. Food was good, but the brunch menu is pretty small and there aren't any daily specials. What we did order was very well executed and reasonable value. I found the back patio quite noisy though so as a group of 5 it was hard to have a table wide conversation. I'd recommend going as a couple as that problem would be eliminated.

Changed chefs so not as...

Changed chefs so not as good as it used to be but I love the covered garden area in the back, so romantic, and the alsatian tarte cant be beat!

NEW LOCATION

By GassinT |

Thrilled to see August is back having moved from The West Village to Upper East Side. Not the same lovely warmly village atmosphere as it had but a modern, somewhat cold look. So pleased that Chef and Co-owner is still there, however, found our reception rather chilly.

Okay but Not Great

By DGandSAG |

A recent lunch at August was a mixed bag -- nice ambience (windows opening out onto Lexington Ave.), nicely presented but so-so food (seared tuna bowl -- wasn't the most flavorful tuna, only a modest amount of accompanying veggies for the price), and sluggish service (waitress disappeared for a long stretch, had to ask another server for the order status on a weekday when the restaurant was only half full, at most). While it might be better at other times, August was a bit disappointing on this visit.

you will want to go back - special place

By BobMiles10003 |

great food and service. but you must sit in the back room a/k/a/ heated garden. it is definitely a special place. price was reasonable and fair for what you get but it was listed in the Michelin Cheap Eats which does not make sense. Not complaining, well worth the price but not a cheap eat. Had the shrimp sandwich - was great - pizza looked great. For dessert we has a chocolate, banana cake with ice cream. would go back just for that

Good food for lunch and nice atmosphere, if a bit crowded.

By NickAgo |

We went for lunch and had a very good meal. The mix of people was great, and the patio is very nice. Would I go there especially for dinner?.... No, probably not. But a nice friendly neighborhood place. The dining area inside is a bit small.

quaint, romantic, delicious

By Gene |

Had a very nice meal here. Wine selection was excellent, staff and service were excellent. We reserved a little later than usual - 9pm. Resturant is not terribly big but it is comfortable once you sit. As could be expected on a saturday night in a good, restaurant, it was packed and the noise level was a little high. The Hostess was aware we were there before our table was ready and personally served us a cocktail while we waited. I asked for a table in the back room and they cordially accomodated me, knowing it might take a few extra minutes. Our meal was excellent and we were not rushed or pressed at all. Overall, great romantic dinner date!

I see absolutely no reason to go to this restaurant

By Susie M |

Okay I maybe be spoiled since we live in San Francisco and are used to being treated properly when we go out to eat. And maybe New York is New York. But this was horrid. We met our niece there for dinner. The hostess would not seat us til we had a "complete party". Huh? Don't get that one. So we waited at the bar. The bartender was rude. And the hostess pressed us as to when out third would arrive as she had lots of people wanting a table. When we arrived I requested we sit in back in the patio. Of course that did not happen. That sat us in front in the bar. We should have walked out at that point. Our fault. I have NEVER been in a louder restaurant. They have only 2 tables in front. They should get rid of them and let the loud yelling people have the entire area. Food was good but who cares? At that point we just wanted to escape.

Not great but worth another try

By michaell1232014 |

Friends and I went out for Brunch the day after the snowstorm and suggested August as they enjoyed it for dinner. I will say that brunch was good, not great, and the service was exceptionally slow despite the restaurant being empty. That said, the servers and staff were so nice and welcoming that I would come back to try them at a more "normal" time.

Food Gem

By matsays |

Took my wife here by request for her birthday and glad I did. We had an early reservation and literally had the place to ourselves on Saturday...place has a great ambience with two distinct sections separated by the bar. The decor is very nice and calming. Food was really great. We started easy - the mixed greens - and in particular the dressing and the radishes were wonderful. I had the hanger steak which was thick (more like a sirloin) but unusually soft. It was accompanied by Mexican creamed corn which had a flavor I couldn't quite place (not super spicy) but absolutely loved. She had the duck, which was a play on Peking duck with a crepe wrap and cucumber. Frankly, it was an enormous serving of duck but cooked perfectly. We also had a side of poppycock squash, which was laden with roasted garlic and sea salt - also well done. Check was still only $100 - totally worth it!

Sadly disappointed

By Saz3327 |

Spotted this lovely restaurant. Great appearance, friendly staff, excellent service. Starters were nice tomato soup with cheese on toast and crispy zucchini fries (rather a large portion). Mains sons August burger looked and tasted lovely. All meals were presented well. Both mine and my partners were over salted the short rib was still nice however my swordfish became increasingly inedible sadly it was pure salt. The vegetables and purée were nice but the fish just too salty. My son had creme brûlée which we managed to steal a taste and that was excellent. What a shame!

Wonderful brunch spot

By GoDuke_78 |

Loved eating on covered outdoor space in the back. Baked eggs were as good as advertised and my son loved his burger. Service can be a little slow on busy Sunday, but we had a great time.

Tasty continental fare in a light attractive space!

By Bi-coaster |

The menu here hasn’t changed much over the several years we’ve dined here (a slight shortcoming), and they don’t seem to have daily specials. We love the zucchini basket (very thin strips of fried zucchini with a dipping sauce), and I’m a big fan of their roast chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. Unlike some restaurants’ versions of roast chicken, this one comes with a well of gravy on the potatoes, and the chicken itself is quite moist. Yum! My spouse tried the shrimp on polenta with tomatoes, and I shared some of my generous portion of chicken with him. He tried their Manhattan, and I ordered a glass of Chardonnay. Overall a most pleasant experience!

Decent Food, Service So-So

By Robert Matsuoka |

Went there for a business lunch, I had the breaded chicken sandwich, my colleague the cobb salad. She raved, my sandwich decent (a bit too much breading). The atmosphere good, well decorated, good volume for talking. Service was pretty poor, however, and it wasn't that busy. Maybe a one-off thing, will give it another shot.

Definitely!

By Sean R |

Definitely get a reservation, definitely request a courtyard table and prepare for a definitely enjoyable culinary experience! Well worth more than one visit

Always a spectacular experience

By matsays |

The food at August is really something special - everything is perfectly seasoned and paired, and the chef seems to delight in sending complimentary dishes to the table to try (this was our second visit and both times he sent 2 different dishes). We generally eat very light and shared the whole meal. We started with the salad, which despite being a basic leaf mix was really worth it - the lemon-thyme dressing is just hinted on the soft and buttery leaves, never over-dressed. The complimentary tuna bite and the fried eggplants were both something I hope make it on the menu one day (and we don't eat eggplant, but this one changed my mind). For the main course we shared a braised short rib which came so soft, it melted in your mouth, sauced in its reduction and paired with honey and Sriracha, not enough to scald, just a hint enough to spice each bite. The roasted brussel sprout pairing was phenomenal. On the side we had smashed potatoes whose onion jam is something I wish they would jar as a condiment. Beyond the meal, the service is really great. They even sent someone out to buy soy milk for my wife's cappuccino...that's when you know they are really interested in the dining experience. We will definitely be back.

Adorably quaint place to eat!

By Brina1056 |

I always choose restaurants based on the "quaintness" of their appearance, but this one's food is just as amazing as well! I had the roasted organic chicken with mashed potatoes, chilled green beans, and fried garlic. It was supurb! My husband had the grilled pork chop with swiss chard, smoked beans, and sarsaparilla. He loved his as well. Be sure to call ahead and make reservations. The restaurant is pretty hopping, so an early dinner eliminates the crowd. You feel as though you're in a greenhouse in this quaint lil' restaurant! Such a romantic date night for our 1st anniversary.

Surprisingly great restaurant on Bleecker

By sanjay t |

We were walking around the neighborhood actually headed to a different place and happened to see the inconspicuous sign and menu. We decided to take a chance, knowing full well that many of the places on Bleecker are...tourist traps to put it kindly. We were completely surprised. The staff were friendly. Had a working high chair for our baby, and then came the great food. My wife got the Cavatelli and the Risotto. Cavatelli were homemade and excellent. The risotto was very good. She is an italian food snob, so it won't be excellent unless Nonna herself is making it slowly in the kitchen. I had the tarte flambé and sea bass. I would say it was one of the best sea bass dishes i've had. Very delicate flavors which came together very nicely. The tarte flambé was a great mix of creme fraiche, caramelized onions and yummy bacon. Staff were very friendly to my baby which is always a great plus. The restaurant is very cosy, so don't expect it to be super quiet or spacious. The back room is very nice. If you go with kids try to get an early reservation because when we left at 815PM, the place was starting to get very crowded.

RUDE AND ARROGANT!

By AlexJovovich |

My friends and I were walking around the area and we saw this little restaurant that offered garden seating, so we went in to get a table. It was around 4.30 pm and the restaurant was completely empty. The very arrogant hostess named Quin told us with an attitude that they were completely booked until 10pm. So I asked again if it would be possible to sit and order some food and drinks just for half and hour or so because we had to be elsewhere at 5.00pm. She replied in a very arrogant manner "I told you we are completely booked till 10pm". I would like to point out that instead of giving us attitude, she could have been more welcoming and accommodating in trying to find us at a table at 4.30pm when no one was in the restaurant! I left but my friends insisted that we say something to the manager. So I went back and ask for the manager. The bartender named Tom told me that no one was available at this time, so I said that I could wait. He said “you're going to have to wait for a very long time”. I replied "that's fine I have plenty of time." He answered "you're looking at 2-3 hours ". Clearly, this was an attempt to prevent me from speaking to the manager. I told him that I would just like to provide feedback on my experience today because it made me not want to go back again no matter how good the food is. He said I could leave the message with him and that's exactly what I did. But when I was explaining what happened, he kept interrupting and defending his colleague instead of listening to the customer. I calmly explained to him that when a customer tries to give you a feedback, it is your best interest to listen to what the customer has to say. But he just wouldn't listen and started shouting at me so I said to him in that case I would like to get the contact of the manager as I saw no point conversing with such a rude person. He hushed me to the front door to take the business card and leave. In the end I said that he would have to be very considerate towards customers because in this globalised world, words of mouth have a very strong effect on a restaurant's reputation and that one negative comment in Tripadvisor could severely jeopardise the restaurant's long-built reputation. He even went on to accuse me of threatening him! So I said this was not a threat but it is a fact. I left after that because I couldn't stand being in such a horrid place any longer.

A really good find!

By TimC815 |

We happened upon this place after a very hot morning, walking around New York. We needed - no, really needed - a cold and restorative beer. The bar guy was very friendly, and we moved on from just a cold beer to staying for a bite of lunch - excellent fritata and Andalusian eggs en cocotte. We sat at the bar, but the main eating area looked good, too - and pretty busy. Lots of locals coming and going, so clearly a well-known and popular place. Highly recommended.

Great for date night

By Angie P |

On a recent trip to NYC for vacation, my boyfriend decided he wanted to go on a "romantic date" and made reservations to August. Our reservations were for 6:30 and the place was fairly empty when we arrived so we were sat right away. I ordered some homemade strawberry soda which was good. We had plans afterwards for cocktails with friends so we didn't get any wine which I think annoyed the staff. To start, we got the mussels which were great. They were tendy and juicy and very delicious. My boyfriend got the roasted chicken and I got the cod and we both agreed that they were fantastic. The service probably could have been better and it was confusing who our server was because a million people kept coming up and asking us things, but overall it was a really great place, with great food. Definitely only come if you expect to spend $100+ though.

Great Brunch, Great service, Great Food

By A N |

This place was recommended to us for Mother’s Day Brunch. We checked out of our hotel and arrived a little early before the restaurant opened - it was pouring outside and they let us in early, seated us and gave us our coffee - Perfect! Food was excellent. I had an omelette and my kids both had the New England Breakfast. Portions were great and food was excellent. We were on our way to a broadway show but as mentioned it was pouring. They let us sit for almost two hours so we could go straight to the show. It was a terrific brunch, service and food were fantastic. Highly recommend!

A little gem in the West Village

By tavg |

I'm a little hesitant to write this review, as I'm not so keen on getting the word spread about this restaurant, because I really liked it and I'd hate to see it become overly known and popular. But, here it goes: the restaurant proper is on the smaller side, which makes it cute and cozy. Additionally it has a patio in the back which looks great. It's tastefully decorated. The food was delicious and the service good and very friendly - I left a generous tip, which I rarely do because it's rarely deserved, but in this case it definitely was. I will be going back! One last comment: for those of you looking for a romantic dinner venue - August is perfect! I would definitely take a date there!

Chef Josh is the best!

By Chip K |

Had a great dining experience at August while in NYC over the weekend. Exec. Chef Josh Eden and staff gave us the royal treatment. The food was excellent, the service was excellent. Just a great overall dining experience. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and service esp in NYC. The new location is lovely. very rustic and homey. It's in a great location because if you choose to walk to another bar or shopping it's all there within a few blocks.

Great food in a rustic setting

Nice atmosphere, good food

I had a french toast for brunch, the food was very good and tasty. the cost was reasonable but I was surprised by the cost of a bottle of still water (8 $ !!).

Pity a bad experience with one idiot will stop me going back...

By SusieCR |

I just moved to the neighbourhood and had friends visiting from home. We stopped by for a drink. it's lovely on the outside and we were considering going there for dinnner the following night. The chap who was hosting was pleasant enough and told us we could sit at the bar. As we had been walking for a bit, two of us ordered lemonade rather than an alcoholic drink to get us started. The barman (sandy hair in a pony tail) actually rolled his eyes when he heard our order. He didn't smile or speak to us and literally threw the drinks at us over the bar. In fact, there were super aggressive vibes coming off him and it made us really uncomfortable - he obviously did not want us there. Pity as I would like to try the food but it was such a terrible experience, I won't be going back and I'll be telling my mates not to go there either.

Lovely spot on Bleeker

By nicthenic |

Had to wait a while for a table, but had a nice drink at the bar before sitting down. Good wine list and excellent food. Nice atmosphere, we sat at the front, but the atmosphere out the back looked lovely.

Love the Patio!

By RealBusinessReview |

I loved the patio when i ahd my business dinner ! August is truly Italian flavour cousine with a touch of american fusion! the wine list is terrific and the atmosphere is so nice and intimate. Not to much tables and you can really enjoy wine while speaking with your guest. I recommend this restaurant!

A Most Delightful Meal, Experience

By MamaBeary |

August accomodated our group of 7 (one baby) without a reservation during the busy graduation weekend May 15th, 2009. The staff was most gracious and attentive, our baby had such a great time he never had the anticipated melt-down as the main course arrived! The food was so delicious, we found ourselves eating with our hands, along with our baby! I actually felt like some medieval king, sharing every delicious course, and will remember the experience as one of the best I've ever had!

August in January!

By S E T |

August has a very nice ambiance. The food was wonderful. The service was very good. The number of choices on the dinner and drink menus were sufficient, but not a wide variety. Their signature mixed drinks are delicious.

Very Good NYC Spot

By NYCenteroftheUniverse |

August A very cute spot on the UES for happy hour or dinner. The food is very good (a fresh and tasty house salad followed by grilled branzino and an ahi tuna over crispy rice….. all very good composed entrees.) Happy hour is a value offering menu items at happy hour prices (sadly, we arrived too late to partake.) The service, although not quite polished, is very friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere is casual, low key, and inviting. The chocolate lava cake was a sinful dessert. August is quite a pleasant restaurant where very good food is served by an accommodating staff. We will return.

Next to bloomingdales

Really liked it

Dined at August for the first time on Sat night and was pleased across the board with the menu selections, the quality of the food, the service, the cocktails, and the ambiance. Looking forward to returning sometime soon and trying brunch at some point.

Nice Lunch, Neat Place, Good meal and Service

By TRAVELINGCWS |

I visited a business acquaintance to discuss future collaborations and he recommended this restaurant close to his office. We both ordered the Cesar Salad, mine with grilled chicken and his with salmon. We both enjoyed our lunch. August was perfect!

Creative appetizers

By Mark N |

The August Bistro was a pleasant surprise in the (lower) Upper East Side. We were looking for a quiet place to have a cocktail and a light meal, and the August Bistro delivered. A small restaurant with understated design, and creative dishes. My wife had the Brussels sprouts. There are so many ways to serve Brussels sprouts, but these definitely raised the bar. The outside was crispy and charred to perfection. The dressing included Sriracha with a touch of honey. What a perfect combination! And it was dressed with sliced almonds. Just enough to add a crunch to the taste. I had the octopus appetizer. It was a single tentacle, about 12” long. The experience varied from the savory meatiness of the large end, to the crispy crunch of the tip. The accompanying salad had just the right amount of acid and sweetness to counterpoint the warm and chewy meat. I have enjoyed octopus all over the world, and this interpretation set a new standard for octopus appetizers. Bravo!

Ok but limited gluten free options

By Lauren I |

I had read online that they had gluten free options. I emailed them and called several times to see if they had gluten free but did not get a response. I went for lunch and asked the waiter what could be done gluten free and he seemed annoyed with that request. I settled on a salad and the tuna tartare which he said was gluten free. When the tuna arrived it came with two crackers so I asked if they were gf and they said no. I had to wait for them to prepare a fresh tuna, which my companions waited to eat. The food was good but would not recommend to someone gluten free.

Delight Spot for Lunch or Brunch

By VicksVaporRub |

After walking up and down 5th Avenue seeing the holiday displays, St Patrick's Cathedral & Bloomingdales we happened upon August. It was excellent! The wait-staff was very friendly and the service was quick and food very tasty. It was perfect to stop for lunch or brunch and continue shopping.

Perfect Birthday Lunch

By MissS85 |

We were a party of 4 people having a birthday lunch for my daughter. It was a centrally located restaurant for everyone and close to Bloomingdales, where some of us were shopping. We all ordered different entrees and all of us were very happy with our selection. The only complaint I have is that my salad was very small and I left the restaurant feeling pretty hungry. I ordered the shrimp salad and deleted the fennel and oranges. I can't imagine it would have been that much bigger if those items were in it. My daughter loved her caesar salad, my friend loved her cobb salad and my mother enjoyed her hamburger. I should have asked for more arugula when I saw the size of my salad. Service was good. We had a long wait for the dessert, not sure why it took so long for the lava cake. All in all it was an enjoyable lunch and the atmosphere was very pleasant.

Very unfortunate experience

By Jane13579 |

The food at August was fine, the server friendly. However I found a hair in my food and was trying to decide how to handle it when the server came to check on us. She quickly took the plate and eventually replaced it with a half portion of my entree. In the interim my guest's meal cooled down, and in general this experience put a damper on our whole experience. We were presented with a bill for the entire meal which I paid including a generous tip. We have traveled and enjoyed many restaurants over the years. This was the first time I've found a hair in my food. I admit it turned my stomach. Our view is that if August was not willing to subtract the cost of my entree from the bill, at least we should have been offered a complimentary dessert or coffees. In commenting this to the manager as we left the restaurant, he demonstrated a complete lack of respect for us as customers. It was quite shameful and unfortunately reflects poorly on the whole establishment. We will not recommend or return.

Delicious green salad and the best Nicoise salad I ever had in my life (anchovies, seared slices of tuna) in a slightly upscale utilitarian space and good UES-style service.

Delicious!

By msher5 |

I recently took some business associates to August for dinner. The food and service were outstanding. Would highly recommend.

not going back!

By Fernando P |

went there for brunch on a weekend, took the first available table which was inside, the waitress was courteous but nothing beyond that, food took forever to arrive, good quality, nice flavor but totally overpriced, I asked for french fries but never got them, altough they sure charged for them, so I did complain and they took'em off the check.....around 60 dollars for brunch? with no drinks? really? .........overall a "meh" experience, but won't go back, it's just not worth it......

Great food, service could have been better.

By Anne A |

The food in this restaurant was lovely and not hugely expensive. However the restaurant is quite small and the clients are tightly packed in. Not the place to go for a romantic dinner as you are virtually sat right next to the people on the adjoining table. Our waiter apologised for our wine not being chilled enough and proceeded to remove the bottle to a chilled bucket on the other side of the restaurant. This meant relying on him to remember to top our glasses up when passing or trying to attract his attention constantly. After a fair period of waiting during which we unable to attract anyones attention we did finally manage to ask a waiter to refill our glasses. By this time we had actually finished our meal and were waiting for the bill. When we queried this with the waiter (he was not our original waiter) he just shrugged and said "bad handover" and walked off. Overall, good food but average service and too many other restaurants in the vicinity to bother going back.

August-Delicious Food, Friendly Staff, Cozy Atmosphere

By Billie with an ie |

I read great things about August and had always wanted to try it. After literally walking by it one rainy night a few weeks ago, I stopped in. It was comforting the moment I walked through the door and cozied up to the bar. Leigh the bartender greeted me with a warm smile, and I knew this would soon be one of my favorite places. I ordered a glass of red wine and discussed the several hard-to-choose from menu items with Leigh. Being on a lower-carb diet, I decided to try the pan seared diver scallops over frise. I was torn between the scallops, the aged sirloin and pork chop. The pork came with crispy chestnuts -- come on: crispy chestnuts. Does it get any better? Wanting to "try" to be healthy, I chose the scallops but asked Leigh if they could somehow add some chestnuts to my plate. He said no problem -- and they did! By the way, crispy chestnuts are as fantastic as they sound. The portion was on the smaller side but it was delicious and just enough. I've made a reservation to return this Wednesday for my partner's birthday and plan on dining on outside (where Victor Garber happened to be dining the night I was there). The wood burning fireplace/stove was a perfect touch to a rainy evening. It's really cool that you can watch the chef cook from the main dining room. If you're in the mood for great food, friendly service in a cozy atmosphere try August. Leigh is adorable -- make sure to try his homemade vanilla soda. Trust me. You will love August as much as I do!

Be careful of the prix fix -- the portions are samller than regular dishes -- not right!

By Forwardwego888 |

I used to like this restaurant although the hostess is always a bit cranky and unwelcoming, still the food was pretty good. I usually liked to order the prix fix lunch - appetizer and entree; good deal but THEN I started noticing that the portions were getting smaller. I thought it just meant I was hungrier but finally last week the couple next to me ordered the same dish as I had but not off the prix fix -- and LO their portions were nearly twice as big as mine/ours. Now before anyone says well the prix fix was cheaper, let me assure you, not that much cheaper than outright ordering two separate dishes. This is the kind of game playing that turns me off as it should all patrons -- it's sort of treats us as "marks" to be hustled. I hope they change their tack but I will lay off for a while and then revisit to see if they got their act together.

Mixed experience

By JontySA |

On the positive side, the small intimate restaurant has got plenty of character and has a warm, neighborly feel. Many of the waitstaff were friendly and efficient, but service was inconsistent and not consistently warm. We were looking forward to the food after reading many of the other reviews on this site. The ingredients were fresh and the emphasis on the integrity of the flavours was clear, but the pork loin dish arrived from the kitchen rather cold and the bland, while the cod dish was over-salted. We may have just been unlucky, and the restaurant clearly has a loyal local clientele, but I would have to give August a mixed review based on our experience.

Very good chef!

We were there for graduation-dinner, and they served dinner with "family style". Excellent tastes and service!

Quaint French Bistro Serving Decent Food

By intlfoodtrvl |

When my colleague offered to treat me to lunch and asked if I was interested in trying somewhere in particular, my mind instantly veered towards August. I had viewed their website many times and had fallen in love with its rustic feel and promise of a hearty meal. I had been dying to sample their brunch and figured this was just as intriguing. I mean, what is not to love about a cozy bistro tucked away on one of the quietest blocks of Bleecker Street? Mediocre food, that's what. As much as I have wanted to visit and love August, I was sadly unimpressed. We walked into the empty cafe and were escorted to the rear garden., where we were courteously asked if we preferred to sit in a sunny or shady section. We opted for the shade, but the air conditioning and greenhouse enclosure helped narrow the temperature gap regardless. As we sat down at our cozy corner table, I glanced around to take in the decor. The slate walls, wooden tables, and countryside decor provided a serene and homey atmosphere. Our waitress was extremely sweet, though I found her attentiveness on the slow side, especially considering the time it took for our food to arrive when there were only two other groups of people in the restaurant. The menu offered several French and European-style appetizers, as well as a variety of sandwiches and light entrees. We started by sharing the fabulous Tarte Flambe, which was essentially a large flat-bread topped with creme fraiche, caramelized onions, and cubes of lean bacon. Normally, I despise onions and try to avoid heavy creams and bacon, but each bite of this crisp and savory pie sent me swooning. However, the Market Salad was bland and way too lemony. Each bite of bitter mixed greens was accompanied by tart lemon rind, potent beets, and strong radishes. The best component of the dish was some sweet, hard pecorino cheese, which acted as an acid reducer, battling the other ingredients in a race to unpucker our mouths. Due to my mixed emotions about the starters, I was not sure what to expect from my Smoked Trout main dish. Though the large fillet was obviously fresh and moist, the smokiness was overpowering. There was also some type of Cajun powder that had been sprinkled across the fish, adding more heat to the fire. The trout was served over a fingerling potato salad, which was composed of perfectly cooked potatoes tossed in oil, dill, and mayonnaise. It was a bit of a watery, goopy mess. One colleague loved her gazpacho (though it was surprisingly white in color) and accompanying half of a chorizo panini. However, my other coworker found her massive hamburger and crisp French fries just mediocre. When we inquired about the dessert options, the waitress told us our choices consisted of gelato, sorbet, and a chocolate cake. We were not sold on any of the options, and when one of us suggested we satisfy our sweet-tooth elsewhere, the waitress even encouraged it. August's rustic nature and mainly French menu offer a quaint haven for diners, though the food is sadly lacking the same pleasantries.

It was ok ...

By BugLet |

The restaurant had a cold, damp feel the evening we were there. The menu is quite limited, which wasn't too much of a problem as we found dishes to try. The food was ok, nothing special. The young woman who served us was really good.

Best salmon burger I've ever had

By Recr |

Though the customers sitting beside us at the restaurant were extremely loud and annoying, the food was DELICIOUS. The manager apologized during and after our meal, which was very kind of him since the two young women beside us were clearly (and loudly) concerned about a life-changing matter - the complications of arranging a wedding. In summary, Sandra will pay for the wedding and the salmon burger is amazing.

A bit of Europe in the Village

By Fremdenfuhrer |

This restaurant in a stone masonry building on Bleeker St reminded us of French cafes and bistros we had loved during the decade and a half we had lived and worked in Europe. We opened with a very flavorful Tarte Flambee differing from our Alsatian favorites only by substituting caramelized onions for the sautéed ones common over there. We then enjoyed a delicious roast organic chicken with the robust juicy flavor of poulet fermier Parisian cafe style. We accompanied the meal with a Spanish Temperanillo and shared a creme brûlée for dessert. I look forward to our next visit!

A little pricy but worth it

By Marilyn A |

The short ribs were terrific and good wine choices by the glass. Not many good choices in the neighborhood so enjoy.

Decent lunchtime restaurant on way to Central Park

By christopherbO9687MP |

August is a decent lunchtime restaurant that I came across on my way to the Central Park Zoo from the subway station. I had the salmon sandwich with a side salad, both were pretty good. The baked apple pie a la mode (served in its own skillet) was particularly good. Service was prompt on a busy Friday afternoon.

August blues

By Jan H |

Nice decor but overcrowded and noisy. Waiting staff were helpful and attentive but to the point that we felt we were being rushed out to make for a second sitting. Food was good but similar to what you can get elsewhere. Avoid the cheese platter.

Expected better

By erf621 |

Last night 4 couples went to August for dinner. The restaurant was chosen because of convenient location for all of us. The restaurant is small and nicely decorated. At 7:30 only a few tables were occupied. We were greeted and immediately seated. Our beverage and dinner order was taken in a timely manor by a very pleasant waiter. The appetizers arrived quickly. But then we waited for almost an hour before our dinners were served. When they finally came out of the kitchen the plates were delivered to the table one at a time. Four people had ordered the grilled shrimp It was inedible! The manager apologized and offered to bring appetizers that could be served quickly. We told the manager that it was getting late and we had lost our appetites. Shortly a plate of very fried green tomatoes crab cakes arrived at our table. They were fair. We were not charged for the dinners that were uneaten.

Cute spot with only average food

By ProTraveler69130 |

This spot looks very cute, quaint, and charming - and it is. But there's nothing impressive about the menu. In fact, I was quite disappointed by the range of offerings. So, disappointed that I simply ordered a sandwich and hot tea - for which even the herbal tea selection was quite limited. If you choose to eat here in the winter, ask for a spot toward the back, because the front draft from the outside is no joke. Frankly speaking, though, there are lots of other better midtown options to choose from.

Impressed by food and service

By Danilo Muniz |

On Thursday 15th December I dropped by this restaurant randomly. Now I am impressed by the reviews below because I had a good experience. I've got the ribs with smashed potatoes and it was a fast cook and I would say one of the best dinner I had in NYC. For dessert I had creme brulee. I would strongly recommend and the price was far enough, 50 USD including the tips. Forgot the name of the waitress but he was really kind and helpful

Sorority Sister's Reunion

By Sharon A |

How funny is it that 2 months ago I was in Firenze on vacation and met some wonderful people who told my about the restaurant in my home city. The food and service were both wonderful and it was the perfect place to reconnect with people. We sat on the back patio which was cozy and comfortable. Its a lovely place and I've made another reservation for brunch again. I'd definitely recommend.

Big Expectations/Big Let Down

By alsal |

Maybe it was just an off night but we were entertaining "foodies" from out of town and our experience at August was so disappointing. The décor was fresh and the staff were energetic but the food was truly disappointing. Tiny, tasteless mussels should have been the indicator of embarrassingly thin filets of branzino that came out of the kitchen lukewarm. My wife ordered the "featured" Lobster Roll which was comprised of overcooked, tiny lobster bits on a stale role. All of this at expensive prices even for a hardened city guy.

Overestimated and overpriced

By Igino F |

We chose this place by chance while walking through West Village in a rainy day but we regretted our choice the minute we saw the meal. The pizza we ordered was so small and so crunchy that we named it pizza-biscuit and it was not even enough as starter. I even had a hard time asking to use the WiFi connection which turned out to be only for the management. All in all, this place is very cosy and well decorated but overestimated and definitely overpriced.

Delicious Food and Lovely Patio

By CosmoElf |

What a gem! Loved the chicken wings - one of the best I've ever had and loved our brunch here - perfectly made, fresh and delicious. The patio is beautiful, the perfect NYC space. A definite stop on my next visit to NYC.

August: Osage

By BreakfastforDinner |

My wife and I went here for our one year anniversary, then on to see the play of the same name. By coincidence, really. If at all possible, sit in the back patio before it gets dark. The light is great. The food is very good. Nothing mind-blowing, but they do classic food well - though, the suckling pig was on the dry side. The wine list needs work. I would go back.

spur of the moment stop, good food

By Tricia G |

Stopped here after our arrival in NYC somewhat unplanned. Decor is very quaint, service was good and food was good. I had salmon and my husband had the quarter chicken. The food was good, no complaints but it was not amazing. Not sorry that we stopped here but would not return.

Needs some tweaking

By Ferjean |

August has a wonderfully light and airy decor. However the food needs a little work. The fried green tomatoes were sliced much too thick and the mustard sauce too sweet and heavy. The charred Caesar salad had an unpleasant burnt taste. The salmon was cooked perfectly, but had too much salt. I really wanted to like this restaurant, but it just had too many things that were not up to par.

Amazing but Expensive

By LoveMyFood179 |

The food made me melt in my seat because it was so good. I just wanted my plate to never end, unfortunately it was pretty small so it ended. The price was rather steep, i would love to go back but these days i just can't. The veal cheeks were a must try, but the dessert was nothing too special. Entree definitely the highlight of the meal

charming spot

Nice place for lunch

By lovenest30 |

The food was lovely The service was OK, but the bosses were in the day we went & they seemed to be more of an interference than anything else... The environment was clean & pleasant...

wow

By VictoriaCummings |

Alex from the Moxy Hotel told me about this place and their amazing Tuna over crispy rice and he was not exaggerating. The atmosphere is surprising, it's very clean and high-design (so much so that I assumed I would be getting a plate with a half a piece of tuna and a sprig of parsley lol) but the food was amazing, perfectly portioned and served by a waitress with some zazz. loved it.

Decent food poor service

By Welovetheroad |

Just ate here with friends. The food was good, consistent with the star rating. The service was slow and inattentive and the kitchen overly persnickety. The waiter said "no replacements" when I mentioned that I had a food allergy to a side accompanying my order and "we can just leave it off your dish." To quote SNL, "really?" The waiter also took our order but otherwise disappeared and had to be pursued for the rest of the evening.

Yummy find

By Victoria K |

Taste of summer resonates through their drinks and food. Lovely fresh flavours and great tasting lunch menu. Great find.

Group of six left disappointed feeling ripped-off

By JPeachM |

After tonight's dining experience our group of six agrees that this place is overpriced, overrated, has rude waiters and poor food quality plus tiny portions. First they rush us to order drinks while we are still waiting for the last person in our group, the waiter keeps bumping a chair into me as if letting me know that I am in his way (no excuses), then the food comes out almost cold, and in the end the take the liberty to add 20% to our bill because we were a group. We were willing to tip, just not as much - but the request to change the tip was to no avail. We were told this was their group policy - which was not even published on the menu or told by the waiter to begin with. If you are trying to impress your date, this might be a cozy, cute place to take her. But groups be aware of the rip-off! Not worth the money. Left sad and disappointed, still hungry.

Ok but not great

By Caroline E |

We were disappointed by the food and the service . We waited more than half an hour after ordering our food and it was not great ! Too bad because it's a cute little restaurant!

10/10 isn’t enough, the food was INCREDIBLE and the drinks were just as good.

By meabh |

I cannot find a single thing wrong with this restaurant. On my first visit to New York, the food was incredible, the drinks were amazing and the service couldn’t be beaten. Eduardo made this the best night I spent in New York, he went above and beyond. I went here alone and had the best night I spent in New York.

Cozy little spot, with warm ambiance and really nice staff

By Ferdi K |

We had a reservation for 6:30, but our group wasn't completed until around 7:15. We weren't rushed at all, instead, we enjoyed Prosecco at the bar and chatted with the nice bartender while we waited for the remaining friends to come. There was one older man, however, who came up to us and had an odd attitude. "Are you just hanging out at the bar or are you joining us for dinner, too?" It was his tone and the way he had asked the question that was a little odd. He may have noticed that, too, because he came back and asked us very kindly if we would like to take a seat at our table, so we could have more room. To be fair, it was 7:15 at this point, 45 minutes past our actual reservation :) Once we were seated, our waitress was wonderful. She was super-patient, despite the fact that our last friend didn't show up until way later. She was very attentive, quick and knowledgeable. We shared a pot of the delicious steamed mussels with a garlicky lemon broth (yum!) and fantastic pieces of kale in it. For the main we tried the Braised Short Ribs, the Roasted Cod and the Roasted Sable Fish -- all very good. The only downside was that the last bottle of Prosecco was served too warm.

Arrogant Presentation and Explanation

By Wendy L |

Food SOUNDS good, but doesn't TASTE especially good. Waiter argued with me over Semi-Freddo, which they presented like soup, not near ice cream, hence the name, and the water argued that that was what the dish was SUPPOSED to be!

Was our favourite NY restaurant

By DavidUnitedKingdom |

We visited August twice, Saturday brunch and Monday dinner, on our recent visit to New York. This place is the only constant in four visits to New York in six years. The roast chicken is brilliant, however other items on the menu were not of the same standard. For example, the pork was dry and tough, therefore not of the high standard we had expected. Staff provided great service and we love the atmosphere.

A nice local find.

By PETERPNYC |

Three of us had dinner here a week ago, and everything hit its mark ! I really should write these reviews immediately but don't always have the time . The butternut squash soup was very good , the Duck breast was very nicely done, as were the short ribs the other two in my party had . The real surprise was the way they succeeded in making Brussels Sprouts taste delicious . The two deserts we had were excellent, and the only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because of the mismatched square table seating instead of a fourtop! Casual ambience, but the food surpassed my first impression of the place . One Caveat , the menu is sparse but if you find items you like on it, it's definitely worth a try.

Good but needs a little work

By TravelLikeaStar |

We went for Happy Hour and the selection of food abs beverages was great. Ny only issue is the food came out a little cold. It could have been an anomaly because it appeared they only had 1 bartender that doubled as the waitress. I would give it another shot!

Chef has changed but quality has stayed high

By AM-TJ |

You always worry when I place you have enjoyed changes chefs. I guess August changed chefs last year some time, but that isn't noticable in the food. The cassoulet was fabulous, as was all of the food on our most recent visit. The only complaint, which we shared with the staff was that the red wine was a bit warmer than I would prefer. Good selection of wines by the glass and waiter paired a red with the cassoulet that was an excellent match. I know there are thousands of restaurants in NY but I have trouble thinking the combination of location, cost and quality is going to get much better than this

Neighborhood find. Still new. Good portions

By Stylelust |

August uses the space so wonderfully that you feel like you are tucked away in a neat place somewhere outside New York City. Yes, you see the buses bumping down Lexington and certainly you hear their squeaky brakes, but the light, happy aura of August takes over and you just relax. I'm still surprised by entrees in the 30 dollar range so I was delighted to have a great meal and wonderful wine. Portion was more than generous and yet, I ate it all. Yes, I will return.

Lovely lunch

By ColHawksworth |

I had a reservation for 1pm but turned up way too early - that was no problem. Very pleasant and attentive staff. The food is great & nicely presented. A beautiful location & a lovely garden room with a glass roof. Great old pizza oven too.

Small size ...big taste

By dorothyb246 |

August is a small restaurant near Bloomingdales that is heads above most neighborhood eateries. Service is not the most professional and the bar is limited, but the food the kitchen turns out is plus plus. Price is appropriate for product. Will return.

A mixed experience

By Laura A |

We booked August prior to our visit th New York. It looked intimate and was resonably priced. However we went on Valentines night and found it was too intimate and quite expensive. The tables were very close together and the chap on the next table was practically on my knee. There was no price on the menu and got a shock when it was $100 per person for nice but not outstanding food. The staff were really nice and the service was good but not worth the price. Maybe it would be different if visited on another occasion and avoided during peak times.

Delightful

By AUDEIC |

Sophisticated atmosphere where adults can have real conversations during dinner. The service was excellent, accommodating and well- timed. The meal began with a bright muse of salmon mouse w/ shredded cuke & lime. Excellent bread was served with a lemon yogurt butter- a perfect compliment to the bread. The food was delicious- the roast chicken was juicy and crisp and when I asked to change the sides to the roast Brussels spouts with siracha honey sauce ( a MUST have), the change was made without fuss and graciously. The brandade cod was very good as was the roast salmon. There is also a small bar up front. This restaurant is more than a cut above the usual.

great find

By harpergd |

Great place for high quality food at a reasonable price. I had steak and my wife had a vegetarian pasta dish. The outside seating is in the rear within a greenhouse setting. Very romantic and quaint. The restaurant itself is on a side street in the West Village area very relaxing stroll from the subway. The service was great, food was much better than average. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking to eat in the West Village area.

A Great Find

By Gail A |

We decided to try August for lunch, after an online search for restaurants close to Bloomingdale’s. It was literally a block away! A cute bistro, the food was very good, however, the service was at times, a bit lax. We waited a long time to order drinks, and then our meal, and were never sure who our server was, since there were two people who came by at different times during our meal. That said, when they were attending to us, they were good, not warm and fuzzy, but friendly. The food itself was tasty and plentiful...I enjoyed my Cobb salad and the chicken sandwich and the burger looked delicious as well. The slow service would not keep me from returning...we enjoyed our lunch and would definitely return.

For the brunch or lunch crowd

By Kcarma |

We kinda meandered into August on a lazy Saturday afternoon and grabbed seats at the bar. Seemed like most folks wanted to sit in the backyard patio but had to wait awhile. I had a good but nothing to write home about Blood Orange Mimosa. Since we were still full from the night before (see other review of Barbounia), we ordered a simple salad (huge bowl of greens with fresh dressing) and fries (good but a bit salty) and potatoes (kinda bland). The baked egg dishes looked incredible but we are saving this for another visit. Would definitely try August again but attempt to grab a seat in the patio.

August Restaurant was excellent!

By Jane B |

We are here last night for the 2nd time. This time it was for dinner. Last time for brunch. The food is excellent. The menu is short but super choices. They have specials but ran out by 7:30 pm. The service was OK but not great. I would recommend if you are in the area. You might meet reservations at times so think ahead. Enjoy!

Fell ill, overpriced, empty, and server and bartender were clueless

By susied511 |

We ate here on a Saturday night and the restaurant was practically empty, so not much atmosphere. I ordered a moscow mule and they brought me a drink with cranberry juice. I had to tell the server what was actually in this very common drink. Server tried to push more drinks and couldn't answer questions well about the menu. Two of us were up sick all night from the meal.

Pretty spot for brunch

By jelyapt |

Really pretty spot with an enclosed garden at the back. Food was very good, but the brunch menu could have been a bit bigger. Baked eggs in a cast iron casserole are the specialty, and are really good.

Sweetest space, amazing service!

By Raven A |

August is one of my favorite restaurants to come for lunch, or a late afternoon glass of wine. The food is fairly seasonal, but always great. Crab cakes are consistent and perfect with a glass of bubbles. I recently had the Tuna Tartare for the first time. The miso-lime dressing was incredible. The ambiance is cozy, calm and clean. And the front windows that open in the summer! Eduardo (the bartender) also makes a mean cocktail :)

Great food and atmosphere!

By busymom64 |

The food and atmosphere at August were great. The service was just as good. From the moment we sat down, the wait staff made us feel comfortable and served us promptly. The food was very good. Highly recommend this place if visiting NYC. Location is good as we went for a nice walk after dinner. Lots of stores to shop or window shop.

Excellent intimate restaurant

By channiere |

Found this place on Google as a romantic place to eat in NY and it didn't disappoint. In a trendy area on Bleeker St the settings were wonderful. We started with Fois Gras and Hamachi Crudo followed by NY Strip which was cooked perfectly.

Nice Bleeker St restaurant.

By MelissaSyd |

Lovely outdoors area in a good space. Good service. Yummy food (I had the chicken). Reasonably-priced. Nice atmosphere. Very pleasant evening.

Best Brunch on Bleeker Street.

By JillCull |

August is a great spot for brunch. We had a nice little party on the beautiful back patio and it was perfect. The sun was shining, the coffee was hot, the chilly willys and bloody marys were flowing. The croissants, omelettes, smoked salmon and french toast was fantastic. The setting and the food made for the best Bridal Brunch on Bleeker Street. Great service and venue.

East side gem!

By MindysMommy |

went for dinner with friends from out of town and family. Could not be more proud of the food set before us by Chef Mark Mata!!! Delicate flavors and an adventure in every bite. Wait staff were extremely attentive and responsive. The Bonbon sparkling rose was amazing . Enjoyed the crab cake and swordfish. Loved all the deserts but found the creme brulee a touch less creamy than expected.

Delicious!

By STYLEONTHEGO |

This jewel box of a restaurant located in the heart of Greenwich Village features a small but varied menu, with everything from grilled octopus to frisee salad with lardons, to roast suckling pig. The service is efficient and pleasant. The front dining room is cramped but if you can, get a seat in the rear green house garden. It's more spacious and the noise is less intrusive. The wine list is varied and quite reasonable. The menu is pricey though, so this is more of a special occasion type place than a last minute drop in (that is if you can get a table). The place is always packed.

A nice little lunch that disappointed at dessert

By Anne C |

This was our first visit to August, although we had always intended to come here when it was located on Bleecker St. (better late than never!). Now situated on Lexington Ave. on the Upper East Side, this place is very inviting as you walk in. To me it has a "bistro feel" with white brick on the walls and wooden floors and tables. It somehow feels comforting. We were here for lunch and I did the prix fixe lunch special and started with a fresh and flavorful beet and roasted carrot salad. It was earthy and sweet and had a gentle vinaigrette. I went for the gruyere omelet as an entree and it was prepared masterfully. Service was attentive and enthusiastic. Things fell apart at dessert, though. Since we were having such a nice lunch we decided to share what they called apple pie with brown butter ice cream. Unfortunately it wasn't a real apple pie -- it was some apple pie-type filling in a little skillet with some tasteless puff pastry on top. I couldn't have discerned that the ice cream was brown butter flavor, either. So disappointing. I would return here for another meal as long as we had a different dessert destination planned for after.

Enjoyed

By bubblyblond |

We were seated promptly and had drinks and bread delivered quickly. Food was good. Menu was sparse. Wanted the steak but they were out of it (on a Thursday at 5pm?) Service was wonderful and the atmosphere was quiet and enjoyable.

Great neighborhood restaurant

The food is always delicious and dependable. The service is impeccable. The staff is accommodating. And the decor is cozy and charming. The perfect neighborhood restaurant that you can always rely on for a wonderful experience. .

Delicious Winter Menu!

By LizNYC |

We recently had a weeknight supper at this lively neighborhood spot right near Bloomingdale's. The beet appetizer was dressed just right and the duck entree was sublime. The whole evening had a festive holiday feel. The only complaint would be that the back of the restaurant was very noisy. However, they very nicely moved us towards the front which was much more peaceful.

Nice restaurant on the Upper East Side

By Renee A |

My boyfriend and I were visiting New York after living there for 6 years. I know the area well and had heard great things about the restaurant when it was in its previous location. Since we never made it at that time, I thought we should give it a try this time while on vacation. It was close by the hotel where we stayed and easy to get to if you are staying or living on the upper east side. I mention all of this for a reason...it is a lovely restaurant with excellent food. The only catch is that, I am not sure I would go out of my way to dine at August again unless staying in the area. The UES is great but not really a dining destination. It seems more of a neighborhood place which is great for the residents. We had a pleasant experience, the menu offered creative foodie dishes as well as having a rustic touch to the cooking. Very good. Only real disappointment were the drinks we ordered as an aperitif, it had cucumber and then some perfumed liquor that really tasted off. The wine was also not the greatest, we just opted for a glass of Pinot Grigio so I would recommend going with a bottle, the wine list seems extensive. Overall, August was good and a good value for the money.

Lovely new location. Equally lovely food and service

By healthspacritic |

Enjoyed a delicious dinner at this recently relocated restaurant. The new location is nicely appointed and very welcoming. The restaurant has a modern vibe, but manages to be warm and inviting as well as relatively quiet. Despite being almost to capacity we could still hear our table mates. The food is very good with a few standouts worth mentioning. We had the artichoke soup which was delicious, especially on a chilly winter night. The seared tuna was excellent, though the pear topping seemed a bit misguided. The gnocchi is outstanding, but VERY rich so be sure to share or make that your main course with a salad. The star of the night was the beef short ribs. A generous portion that was cooked to perfection. It was served with a side of brussel sprouts that I wish were offered as a separate side dish. I would just order that and a salad! The combination of spicy and sweet mixed so well together. The sea bass was also a rave at our table. Only disappointments were the bread basket offered as we arrived (oily) and the lack of a chocolate based dessert. Especially in the winter I think everyone enjoys the comfort of chocolate. The service was wonderful and the chef made a point of coming around and talking to all the patrons which is always a nice extra.

Lovely new premises, food still good, service not great

By Tubulosity |

Note: August is now at 791 Lexington Avenue. We had eaten at August in the West Village some time ago and liked it a lot. This was our first visit since they moved to their new premises on Lexington Avenue. We went for dinner on a Saturday night. Overall, the experience was really good. The design of the new premises is really nice. The restaurant feels so much lighter than at the old premises, but retains an intimate feel that makes it still good for a dinner date. The bar is separated from the dining area so that any celebratory sounds from customers having pre-dinner drinks do not disturb those dining. However, the many hard surfaces in the dining area caused the noise level to become a little too much when all the tables were occupied. The service was average. Our waiter attended to us promptly at all times, but he seemed not to know or care much about the items of the menu. We overheard him being politely unhelpful when asked questions about the menu by the couple at the table next to us (and we overheard them saying how unhelpful he had been after he had taken their order). We will definitely go back; but I hope the restaurant can do something about the dining-area noise level by adding more soft surfaces and about waitstaff training.

Charming place

By archil a |

Well, seriously - restaurants in New York are more cozy than the other! Wooden tables, brick walls, candles on tables, fresh flowers on the bar - it is impossible to choose your favorite. August is an absolutely charming place where you can relax after a successful shopping tour of the West Village. The most pleasant thing is to sit in the courtyard of the restaurant. Thanks to the fact that it is indoor, you can spend time there even on rainy evenings. I especially recommend the shrimp paste. She's fantastically beautiful!

Dinner

Was at the new Upper East location for my birthday. Atmosphere was great, as was the wine list and service. My appetizer (gnocchi with merguez and parmesan) was fantastic but the entree was so so. I had the res snapper with chilis. The fish was cooked well but came with two heavy sauces, one savory and one that i think was supposed to be chili but wasn't spicy. There was some kind of sauce that looked like roe but that was bland. The description lead me to believe it was snapper with a true chili sauce (think chili gyoza or good indo-Chinese chili chicken). This wasn't. The sauces drowned the well cooked fish and overall were disappointing. I wouldnt order that dish again (the app on the other hand was great). I will try the place again but make sure i ask questions about the entrees given the poor and misleading descriptions on he menu.

New location

This is a very popular restaurant with a nice French/American cafe cuisine. It gets a little noisy as the night progresses, but not oppressively so. The waitstaff is good but not super. The food has a lot of fun options but is somewhat pricey. I wasn't thrilled by the cocktail menu but they made a good martini.

Great Neighborhood Restaurant

By Keiki1963 |

What can I say? The food is prepared eloquently by a dedicated chef, and the manager goes out of his way to ensure your meal and service are beyond expectations. Our family was visiting our daughter for Christmas and we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. The duck was exceptional, as was the ahi, tomato soup (best ever) and every other appetizer and entre we experienced. We also enjoyed sharing five different desserts, again, all wonderful. I cannot recommend August enough when in NY, or especially if you live here and are looking for a new favorite!

Friendly dining in Lexington Ave

By Russell C |

Good food and service in quiet-ish surrounds. Friendly service if slightly in-yer-face......... but all good and fair value..... take your mum here or your gran, they will be able to hear you speak and they will enjoy the traditional food and fairly priced wine.

Relaxed dining experience with very good food!

By Bi-coaster |

Fine service and delicious food. We enjoyed the addictive zucchini fries along with the sole meunière and the roast chicken. The chicken was fabulous—came with mashed potatoes and plenty of jus, plus green beans and blistered cherry tomatoes. Food here is a cut above some of the others in the neighborhood!

August in Upper East Side

By jerryataylor |

We came after reading the Town & Country Magazine's rave review. We were not disappointed. Our meal was fabulous, reasonably priced, great wine list. Wine prices very fair. Gorgeous decor. Romantic. Good wait staff. Put this at the top of your dining list!!! Best Brussels sprouts I've ever eaten too...!

Bad food!

By EugenStockholm |

Always interested to find new good restaurants, i read about this restaurant in a swedish mag, swedish master chef of food Macus samuelsson recomended this restaurant. We had a very bad lunch in their garden, it was really bad, no flavour at all. Never again.

great lunch

Visiting from UK. Stopped here for lunch during a visit to Greenwich Village. Friendly efficient service, lovely food. Reasonable price. Ambience good and very nice little covered patio out the back. Would recommend for lunch-burger and omelette excellent, we just had one course.

Lovely spot and great ambience

By pryce56 |

We had a very nice evening here. August has a lovely intimate feel and the service was good. The wine list is a little bit limited but with one exception the food was very good. The mussels were amazing as was the mushroom ragout. Unfortunately I ordered the baked pork chop which was dry and over cooked. The accomaniments were very good though. I would definately go to August again.

Delicious food and a great staff

I love this restaurant. The staff is friendly, efficient and professional. The menu is terrific and more importantly delicious. The chicken dish is very possibly the best chicken I have ever eaten. I could eat there every night and would be overweight but very happy.

Relaxed Upper East Side restaurant with a focus on fish and seafood

By Bi-coaster |

Attractive dining room, good service and an intriguing menu. We sampled the hot corn bread (tasty) and the basket of zucchini strips (like skinny fries and addictive). Our entrees were the glazed ahi tuna on crispy rice which my spouse liked and the sole meunière with sautéed spinach and marble potatoes which was also very good. Diners were mix of gender and age ranges and included one single woman diner.

Nice surprice!

My friend and I had a reservation at a different restaurant, but while we were trying to find it in a downpour we stumbled onto August and decided to go in. The place was busy but we were greeted right away and were able to sit down fast. I saw they have a wood fire oven and was curious to try something cooked in it, so I had the Tarte Flambé as an appetizer: onion bacon and creme fraiche made it a perfect start to our meal. My first course was the bass, roasted in the oven as well and it tasted great too. Service was attentive. I would definitely go back.

Feels like a French bistro

By oldwanderingwoman |

Though the lunch menu is somewhat limited, it shouldn't be hard for anyone to find something delicious. The small restaurant is easy to miss and missing it would be a mistake. The inside room is cozy and dark but opens onto a covered patio that seems more like a walled garden that has been covered to provide outdoor dining without the bugs and rain. The wine list is predominately French but includes an excellent variety at reasonable prices. I'd heartily recommend it as a destination restaurant.

Simple.Good.Unpretentious

By SagHarborAlice |

I have heard it said that you can judge a restaurant by it's roasted chicken.....the chicken here is beautifully done. I am not a fan of white meat, but this breast and partial wing were tender, juicy, perfect. Very straight forward good food, well presented, well cooked, nice and thoughtful staff. My friend had a crabcake and tomato watermelon salad....also beautifully done. The burgers at the next table looked thick and good. The menu is small, everything seemed beautifully fresh and cooked with skill. There were no specials.

A Good Meal, in a Pleasant Setting with Nice Service

Our dinner here was very good. And the service also. We particularly enjoyed the roasted cod. And everyone at the table enjoyed the apple crumb dessert.

Great date spot!

August is such a cute little restaurant, surrounded by lots of great shops. The outdoor area is very romantic, and the food is very good. Would recommend for sure!

Amazing hidden oasis

We went here to dine last night and normally I would not leave a review for any restaurant but I was so impressed by the service the food and the ambiance I decided it was worthy of a review The food and wine menus are extensive reasonably priced and service was 5 star I highly recommend this fine restaurant you will be pleased if you give it a try

Perfect for Special Occassions

By Edac2 |

A friend told me she had just had dinner at August for her 20th anniversary and it was one of the best meals she had ever had in the most romantic little restaurant she had ever seen. Since my 20th anniversary was a only week away, I made reservations through Urbanspoon, then made a trial run to the West Village on the Sunday afternoon before the dinner to check it out. August is a cute little restaurant on Bleeker Street, about two blocks from the Christopher Street subway station. There is a small indoor dining area, followed by a bar, and then an outdoor seating area that's enclosed by a glass roof. There are lots of bare Edison bulb lamps and flowering plants, which adds to the romantic feel. The staff confirmed my reservations and seemed intrigued by my name. It was probably a good idea to make reservations. It's also not overly formal. When we arrived for dinner the following Thursday, I was wearing jeans and a nice shirt, same as the staff, who greeted me by name. We started out with appetizers and wine. I had the Peeky Toe Crab Salad (chilled broccoli, toasted pistachio, ponzu, $16) and my wife had the Mixed Greens (shaved vegetables, lemon thyme vinaigrette, $10). Both were spectacular. We were also given two small slices of fresh Italian bread, which passed my bread test. I could easily have eaten more bread, but I was pacing myself. The Steamed Mussels (kale, lemon herb broth, grilled bread, $14) looked great, and my friend recommended it, but it could almost be an entree in itself. Next, the main course. I had Scallops (celery root, honeycrisp apple, lemon brulee, $29) and my wife had Roasted Sea Bass on a bed of sushi rice with sauce (the skate wasn't on the menu the night we went). I think my scallops were the best I had ever had, and they weren't even bay scallops. The sea bass was equally perfect, though it might have had a tad too much sauce. For desert we shared mint Il Laboratorio Gelati, $8. It was light and fresh, the perfect pairing for our seafood dinner. And coffee afterwards was equally fresh and flavorful. The total bill, with a generous tip, was $170. That included three glasses of wine, two appetizers, two entrees, one dessert and one coffee. Portions aren't on the huge side, but are so flavorful that they are best savored.

Nice find

By Lovetravelling939 |

Very glad we found this by chance. The food was good, the service by the bartender ( who appeared to be running the place single handed) brilliant.

Memorable

By Marcd1963 |

Memorable because it was possibly the worst meal I have eaten in years. Memorable because thanks to the terrible food I dropped 5 pounds during the night... if you get my drift. Went on Open Table for a reservation...not available. Went to the restaurant and it was empty. The bar is dirty with dusty bottles. The service is terrible. Waited 20 minutes for a drink. The steak was as hard as a rock and overcooked. The pasta was completely revolting chuck full of raw store bought pre-prepared minced garlic and what tasted like coconut milk? Sent the steak and pasta back. Our waiter saw that there were issues and basically ignored our table. The only fast part of the service was clearing the table and presenting the check. Revolting meal.

Catching up

By Troy L |

Was in town for the weekend and connected with a friend for dinner. Restaurant was clean, staff was friendly and food was good! We started off with pre-dinner cocktails, eased into appetizers then dinner and finally wrapped up with a selection of desserts...enjoyed how my glass was always filled with a beverage through the courses. The tuna with crispy rice was the main and I do say the portions were well balanced and flavorful. The selection of desserts were wide - from chocolate lava cake to cream brûlée to assortment of sorbet. All worth the calories! Would certainly visit again!

Ambient evening, delicious food

By BigMarbleG |

We were a group of 10 and had a great time at August. a little sceptical of the family style menu given our group size, we found it to be perfect. Some amazing food was plentiful and very tasty.... Enabling us all to sample items we may not have otherwise. The conservatory area at rear was very picturesque and made for a beautiful evening. Service was excellent throughout the evening.

Typical upper east side place with European type do shes

By Allan S |

Nothing outstanding here. Except prices. Food was better than average but I personally thought their prices were a bit high. Good spot for older ladies to dine and. Those who cannot make up where to go. Serviceable and decent wines but not. Fabulous either. Good for taking ng out an older person.

Service with Attitude!

By Mav545 |

Our waitress brought her bad attitude to work. Poor service, other waiters had to cover. She was downright nasty. Shame. Made the whole experience a major bummer. Never going back. I would avoid..If you happen to go, and your waitress is Camille W...Run !!

Not particularly French...

By olha2017 |

Dining at a French style restaurant, I have some humble expectations. One of them is that the bernaise sauce is self made and not pre-fabric. We sent out their version of this French classic twice, asking them to tell the chef that we wanted a properly made bernaise - which we did not get. The crab cake starter was good. The sole menuiere was average (still way below what I normally get served when in France). The creme brûlée was another disappointment, stone cold on the inside, and clearly pre-made. Service not impressive either. Had to ask three times to order the wine, which consequently arrived when first course was finished. Surely many better places to eat French style in NYC than this place.

cozy little place right...

By michaeljaygoldberg |

cozy little place right smack in the middle of the village. Go back for dinner? Nah. but a glass of wine ok.

Lunch perfection

By Paula H |

Recommended to us by a resident, we had a hard time deciding what time of day to visit, but ended up there at lunch. We were so glad we did. It’s a lovely place, with window seating next to the street. Perfect spot to get away from the hubbub, enjoy a glass of wine and lunch. We opted to try several different things and split them. Our server was happy to do this and recommended some of the most popular dishes. All were delicious. The burrata and fig appetizer was to die for. We would definitely return to this restaurant.

Food good; workers and noise level NOT!!

By JdogRossCa. |

Give me a break folks. I don't care if a restaurant has great food. If the workers have attitude and the place is VERY noisy,I do not want to eat there. We were seated in the front room instead of the rear patio area as we had requested several times. There we people all around us yelling in order to be heard. Next time I will just stay at home and eat so I can converse like a normal person. I guess I do not fit into the young and cool mold any more. I value discourse over food.

Great food & friendly staff

By Keiki1963 |

We visited this charming restaurant on the upper east side on a Sunday afternoon. The manager was very friendly and accommodating, as we arrived late in the day. All of our brunch items were delicious, and our favorite was the Ahi! I highly recommend if you're in the area.

refreshing

By DIAMIR1 |

A very pleasant little stopover in the heart of New York City. The restaurant offers an astonishing and simple menu which translates into a magnificent presentation on the plate and perfect matches between dishes. I highly recommend this restaurant.

This restaurant is closed

Just checked the website. They said they lost their lease. Too bad, sounded like a good restaurant. I'm born in August. Only terrible because it is closed. Aloha

Great food, even better cocktails

By hdawg89 |

Visited here twice in 6 days! We happened upon this lovely wee place when wandering close to our hotel and decided to give it a try! We received a wonderful warm welcome on entering, and the hospitality shown to us throughout the evening was excellent and probably the main reason we returned so soon (that and the cocktails)! The menu is small which I liked, that's when I knew the food would be special and I wasn't disappointed! Highlight had to be the cocktails though! The barrel aged specials are to die for!

August: sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't

By wilach |

My mixed feelings are something weird, because I really loved August since the moment I first saw the decor and the overall charme of the place. That was a couple of years ago. Food was good, nothing mind blowing, just decent and tasty...but I had a meal there last January and it was bad. So, I guess restaurants have their good days and their not so good days, maybe they changed chefs, no idea. But I still like the atmosphere, the back room is really nice.It is crowded of course, like any other good restaurant in Manhattan (who wants to go to an empty place people???). Therefore it is good for people watching. Will be back.

Beautiful

By robcurtross |

I stopped by August on Lexington Avenue for dinner recently, and was very impressed with the beauty of the decor, the attentiveness and promptness of the wait staff and the very good cleanliness. Unfortunately, the food was not really that good. The pea soup with scallops sounded delicious from the well written menu, but lacked freshness, nor any real taste of peas. And, the few peas on the side were past their prime, bitter and off putting. The daily special was a sea food salad, well presented but with a very vinegary taste that destroyed the delicacy of the flavors of the seafood -- I couldn't tell if the seafood was fresh or not -- and perhaps that was the point of the seasoning. An interesting sparkler was on offer -- Melanthia from Greece made with Black Muscat grapes -- good bubbles, a rich flavor, hints of cinnamon, satisfying. I might try this restaurant again -- the Park Avenue Armory is a favorite destination for shows, exhibitions, and the beauty and history of the building -- but it would be with low expectations for the food.

Maitre d' is great

By DougJ25 |

I had a lunch here to celebrate my administrative assistant. From the moment we walked in, the maitre d' welcomed us and from then on the service was really nicely done. We were well taken care of. Food was fantastic - I'm a long-standing fan of the original outpost in the West Village so I'm thrilled to have August in the East Side near my office! The maitre d' was exceptionally amazing!

Great Courtyard Brunch Spot

By IliasTsangaris |

The sitting inside is rather depressing when you have a nice patio in the back Nice brunch in a great location.

Great Food - Service OK

By RFJ |

Stopped in for dinner and sat in their outdoor section. My branzino entree was excellent. The busboys seemed to be working hard, but the waiter was not particularly attentive - he basically did the bare minimum, which is too bad as I would have give 5 stars otherwise.

JUST REOPENED AT 791 LEXINGTON: 61st-62nd

Still as good. Loved the chared tuna and the cauliflower risotto. Service is iffy but hopefully as the staff shakes down so will service.

Fantastic

By Wildsnoopster |

We stumbled on this place while looking for the Magnolia bakery and what a discovery. This place has got everything right from the portion size, to the food quality and the service. Firstly it has a limited menu so there are only about 15 items on the menu, for me this is a great idea as it gives the kitchen focus on delivering quality rather than quantity of food. The initial service was good and we had a couple of hot toddies, a bottle of chablis and a coke. We then enjoyed a couple of baked skate, a chicken dish with green beans and a macaroni cheese. All four dishes were excellent however the skate and cockles was stand out, although the green beans with garlic were good and the restaurant realising that macc cheese can get a bit sickly in huge portions reduced the size perfectly. The only minor criticism was the length of time it took for the main courses to come out. This is a minor niggle and it does make you think that all the food is cooked fresh, however the wait for 30 mins. That said I am not taking any marks off as we could not fault the food and the waiter came over to top up our wine without being over bearing. In terms of decor and atmosphere we sat out the back in the garden which is covered with a glass roof. It really felt great with good music at the right level to enhance a meal rather than dominate. Overall this is a great place to go and definitely worth a visit while you are in New York.

Top Class New York Dinning

By Freshfield |

My wife and I were taken to the August in the heart of the West Village. I was told it was good and was looking forward to going there. It was FANTASTIC. It was in West village and it looks small from the outside and my party was 6 people and we sat in the atrium part of the restaurant at the back. The service was great, the food was superb and the service was easy NY. My wife had the thinnest tomato & cheese pizza which was cook in the wood fire oven she said it was the best she had tasted for a long time. I had the strip steak and broccoli. The broccoli is something I have never tasted before. Spoke to the waiter he said they are blanched and the roasted in the wood oven the taste was so different. All other meals were up to scratch couldn't find anything wrong.

August (No) Rush

By Michael L |

What a great place. Terrific staff, from the bartender to the hostess to the waitstaff. Three of us met there for brunch. August has a very creative and egg-citing brunch menu. Our meals were delicious, the price was right, and they were happy to let us linger over a second cup of coffee, as we caught up on each others lives. I highly recommend the Gruyere Omelet with a side of bacon, or even better, the Wood Oven Eggs en Cocotte. The location on Bleecker Street is perfect, While we were there, a street bazaar was in progress, with vendors selling every sort of merchandise and delicacy. I highly recommend being seated in the "greenhouse"

New Favorite!

By Mimi M |

A little sleuthing on Trip Advisor led us to this gem. A cozy bistro on Bleeker Street with great food. Yes, this is a small restaurant, yes the tables are tightly packed, yes, imagine it can get noisy but who cares when the food is so good! We ate there on a chilly December night, started with cocktails and the Tarte Flambe, perfect, thin crusted yumminess. The chicken and cod were also expertly done. Loved the atmosphere - friendly, welcoming, yes, cozy. A return trip is definitely in our future!

something has happened and it is bad

By travelingdad56 |

Tried to make a reservation on Saturday for Monday. Left a message on their machine. No one returned my call. I called again on Sunday evening and was told their "system" was down and they couldn't take my reservation. I called today and no one answered the phone. This is an excellent restaurant but the staffing of the phone and the reservation system is broken and until it is fixed I wont return
