Wonderful dinner

By WestchesterP2 |

Haven't had dinner at Barbetta in awhile. I forgot how much I enjoy this restaurant. The food is delicious and the staff is professional and friendly. Wasn't expecting a restaurant week menu, but as it turned out, the selections on that menu were exactly what I wanted. The dining room has old world charm and the outdoor garden is charming.

Elegant and Sophisticated

I was recently here for lunch for NYC Restaurant Week. $29 gives you a 3 course meal that includes appetizer, entree and dessert. I started with pasta, basil and tomato dish, followed by the salmon and then finally strawberries and cream for dessert. The meal was outstanding. The waiters were very helpful, especially when it came to the wind selection. No one rushed us out the door either, which is so typical of Italian restaurants in Italy but not always the case in NY. The decor is enchanting. I felt like I was walking back into the elegance of another century in Italy.

Romance Italy in NYC

Very fancy but amazing food. Pricy. Extensive wine list. They boast that it's one of the longest in town. The sommelier preparation of our wine and glasses was a perfectly executed performance. The mozzarella salad was fresh and tasty.

Good no great

The evening was mid August humid but we sat in the courtyard which was airy and pleasant. The occasional siren reminded us we were in NYC. We were served by a tuxedoed personable waiter. Nice touch. Tablecloths and linen napkins also. If only the food was as elegant. Here we go: the bread was so so. A roll with rosemary a top was gummy and accompanied by "store" quality bread sticks . We started with prosciutto San Danielle accompanied by 3 type of melon balloons. Good ham but the dish was sparse and pretentious. I like my ham and melon straight with no frills. I guess the presentation was intended to distract us from the portion size. Pass! The other three dinner partners had either a fish dish or pork "rack". The fish was over done and under portioned. The pork rack was a single rib chop and drowned in a heavy sauce. I think a "rack" should be what is expected. The plate also included a veg and potato. Boo! A blue plate presentation is not what I expect at an authentic Italian restaurant. Again, the busy plate was a slight of hand attempt to cover up the small portion of poorly prepared protein. I had a dinner portion of paccheri with meat sauce which was very tasty. The pasta was perfectly cooked but the meat sauce was average. I did like the dish on balance. No dessert, no coffee so nothing more to add. Lots better places to spend your time and money.

Hours on website are wrong

I tried to eat here after theater last Friday night and Saturday night. Their website says they are open until midnight. I arrived both nights after theater around 11 and they were closed.

Great for dinner and for lunch on their outdoor patio

By bubuNewyork |

We had 2 very different experiences at Barbetta. - the first one was a dinner for business purpose inside the main dining room. The food was excellent, the waiters and waitresses very professional. the decor is on the traditional, old european style. And for once, not too much noise with blasting music or acoustic so bad you can't have a normal conversation...Overall beautiful evening. - the second was lunch in the outdoor patio at the back of the restaurant on a beautiful sunny day. The patio is quiet, with a lovely fountain. Again food was excellent (mushrooms were delicious so were the grilled peppers). This is the best kept secret patio in the neighborhood.... I think this restaurant is more for middle aged people than for young crowd

Oldest Italian restaurant in NYC

Friendly staff, excellent food. If weather is pleasant try to sit in the outdoor garden, perfect setting. Food is tasty. Can be pricey. Dinner entree a la Carte: $30 plus. They offer price fix menu- appetizer, salad, entree, desert & coffee $50-60 per person. Daughter of the founder running the restaurant.

Seemed like cruise ship food

The restaurant definitely has old school Italian ambiance. All the waiters are male. They have an extensive wine list, and the wine maitre was very knowledgeable. Enjoyed an excellent bottle of wine. We were only able to order the theater Prix fixe menu. It was $58 per person, $7 more of you ordered certain items. With that you got one pre dish a salad soup or something, and your meal. Also a dessert. And coffee. My first plate was a pork loin which was so overdone I couldn't eat it. They switched it for something else which was just okay. My husband had seabass which he said was smsller but good. If you go I would definitely suggest not to go not during the prefix menu time, and enjoy something freshly-made off the menu. It seems like everything was ready like on a cruise ship and as soon as you order they just bring you a plate. Overpriced for what you got, the food was very average. We did have good service however and the people were friendly. Don't think I would go back again, not worth the money for the value of the food. The wine however was great.

A VASTLY OVERLOOKED AND UNDERAPPRECIATED FINE ITALIAN RESTAURANT

This was our second (return) visit to Barbetta. We enjoyed our experience the last time we were there so it deserved a repeat visit. We were not disappointed at all. The food and service was just as good as our last visit. In fact, we had exactly the same server as the last time. Most of the staff have been there for years and still give top notch professional care. The other reason we like this restaurant is that it's an easy walking distance to most of the great Broadway Theaters nearby. This particular evening we were going to see "American in Paris". Also, this time we wanted to dine outside in their garden patio area. The weather was perfect for this and took advantage. The menu has much to offer as far as great traditional/classic Italian cuisine. Yet, because of the attention to food quality and seamless service you never get the impression that the restaurant is old or outdated (unlike Patsy's Restaurant). True, it's certainly not decorated in the modern fashion. It oozes "old school" Italian. But, we loved it. If you are looking for a conveniently located Italian restaurant near a Broadway play with very good cuisine and service, you really must try Barbetta!

Old Style

That is one of the oldest restaurants in the New york City : it keeps receiving patrons after 111 years ! We gathered there , recently, with some friends , for a anniversary dinner ; the evening started in their 'living room' where we were offerred French champaigne and were entertained by the maitre d' about the property and its owners history. Afterwards we got seated at a table nicey featured with old style cutlery and glases. The main attraction are the very old recipes brought and perepetrated from Italy ! We ordered a lot of meals made after ancient recipes : Bagna Cauda , Carchoal Grilled swordfish, Fegato Veneziana , Baked Apples. We were able to match the meals with a good wine. The service has been attentive .

Old world elegance. A quiet oasis.

Step back in time to a Old world European experience. Superior service at a European pace, i.e. a bit slow. Food was good but not spectacular. Lemon tart with pistachios was highlight of fixed price pre-theater menu. Dining room was elegant and garden area was lovely.

Good old fashioned ambience

We read the reviews and were a little sceptical, however we were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was beautiful , lovely little tables and we were sat at the back so we had great viewing seats. We visited just before a show and on arriving they check this with you . The only downside was that we didn't realise you could order off the main menu, so as we were one of the first to arrive we stuck with the set menu....the food was okay on this but not great. Other diners proceeded to order of the main menu and gee food looked better. I would recommend for an experience pre show.

Upscale Classy Old-World Italian

By Veri K |

So glad this over 100 years-old Italian is still here! Upscale service and Italian food in an inside intimate dining room, or an outdoor patio garden. The farfalle pasta with peas was delicious, as well as the salmon entree. Everything is freshly and carefully prepared. Many tv and films have been shot there because it reeks of Old New York upscale dining.

Best part of our trip to NYC!

It's not often that a visit to a restaurant can be such a memorable experience but this definitely was for us! What a wonderful time we had at Barbetta! The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. They also made sure we had a great time and experience and still get done in time to make it to our show. Our waiter, Eduardo, made us feel like family. He's the perfect embassador to this great city. If you go, be sure to ask Eduardo about the famous people he's served - he's the most amazing story teller! We also loved meeting the gentleman visiting from Italy and helping out at the restaurant - what a treat! He too was so kind, helpful, and fun to talk to.

A little too old for my liking.

Went here based on the reviews for a special dinner out. Food was for the most part good to very good (burrata was amazing, porcini mushroom risotto was delicious), staff was very good (except for the hostess who was a little pushy...made my husband check his light windbreaker because they frowned on his coat being put on the back of his chair...she allowed me to keep my cardigan...I was not a fan of hers pushy way right from the moment we walked in), prices were typical nyc higher end but not too outrageous. The thing I couldn't get beyond even more than the pushy hostess was the atmosphere. It is the oldest restaurant in nyc that is still owned by its founding family (110 years). It was a rainy night and the outdoor patio wasn't in use. Maybe it would have felt a lot nicer if we were sitting out there, but the inside of the place is in dire need of a refurbishing. Drapes on the walls looked disgusting, old celotex tile ceiling... I felt like I was in the 1800's. No need to go back.
