Cozy Korean restaurant

By Twinkletraveller |

We wanted the BBQ but they serve it for dinner only. So, we opted for pork belly, and Japchae bulgogi. Food was ok and service was quick. Ambience is great. If you pay cash, you will get 5% off.

Busy but not traditional

By D F |

Having eaten Korean bbq food many times, the menu here was disappointing, however the food was ok, service friendly, and atmosphere good. Would return here

Good food but noisy

By Vinod C |

Food was great. Place was a little loud. Be careful not to double tip as I did - the bill comes with gratuity included !

So-So

By BayRidgeGal |

We stopped here for dinner and was greeted by an unfriendly hostess who refused to give us a table unless we agreed to order drinks with the meal. She wanted us to eat at an uncomfortable bar stool. The menu was touted as Korean bbq, but the dishes were not traditional. We ordered the braised short ribs and the scallops. Both were tasty, but portions were small for the price. I won't be back.

Nice and trendy

By Bárbara M |

You have to try the very good oysters and calamares during happy hour (after 4 pm). The place is beautifuly decorated with asian elements. The music was just perfect. The staff was kind and efficient.

Excellent Korean Cuisine

By Dealmaker752 |

We had a wonderful and fun meal at Barn Jose. The meats to bbq were high quality and this server was extremely helpful in assisting us on the choices to chose for our meal,

Delicious & Modern Korean Cuisine

By Yv7 |

The place is a nice chill-out place to grab some dinner and drinks with friends. We went during dinner and the lighting was really dim, made it hard to appreciate the nicely laid out food. Oyster happy hour is the bomb! Keep that up and we'll keep on going. The service is impeccable...very friendly hosts and servers.

Hanging out by a full moon!

By Rick601 |

Great new Korean infused restaurant. Visited this restaurant because of Thrillist recommendation. Excellent small plates that are Korean infused. Loved their fried chicken wings, pork belly, and sushi. Atmosphere is really cool with ropes hanging from the ceiling, a barn like look and even a full moon. A must try while visiting the city.

Good food (note - hh is at the bar only)

By Melanie T |

My friends were craving some oysters, so I found Barn Joo, which had $1 happy hour oysters. Once we arrived, the hostess told us that happy hour (including the oysters) were at the bar only (even though I had been to their other location by K-town, and the specials applied at the table too, but whatever. I will let this go) The bar area was packed to the BRIM on a Friday evening, so there was no way we were getting that special. So we just grabbed a few drinks and then they sat us at our table, which we had made a reservation for. We didn't do the BBQ but decided to order a few dishes to share instead. Here is everything we had: Tuna Mayo Tartare (tuna, pickled radish, chives, mayonnaise, sesame oil, garlic bruschetta with honey drizzle) - this tastes better than it looks. I could have done with a bit less mayo, but it was a nice change from the typical sesame oil tartare you'd get everywhere else Korean Pancake w Scallion - pretty standard, nothing to write home about Uni Bibim Paella (rice on a sizzling hot stone plate topped with uni, cured shrimp, capelin roe, pickled radish, kimchi, quinoa, egg and seaweed puree) - this was probably my favorite. The rice at the bottom was crisp, like clay pot rice. There were also a lot of flavors going on, but in a good way. Braised Octopus (octopus, marble potatoes, black bean, shishito peppers, ginger, bean sprouts, gochujang chili sauce) - octopus was nice and tender Seared Scallops (scallops, fresh corn, parmesan, sweet potato, zucchini, lemon aioli) - scallops could have been cooked for a few seconds less, but pretty good overall. I really liked the corn salad that came with it Galbi Steak aka NY Bites (marinated short rib, grilled lemon, kabocha squash, hemp seeds, butter sauteed mushrooms) - the steak was good but I feel like the star of the show here was the butter sauteed mushrooms. It was a little too much food for four ladies, but I'm glad we tried everything that we did. Now, if only we could have had some of those $1 oysters (triple the price for non-HH, which we did not feel like doing).

If the Service was as Good as the Food...

By tburf |

The food was fantastic but the service was disjointed and we were there for way too long waiting on food that sometimes never arrived. The food was all delivered and our friends noticed they hadn't delivered the asparagus. The waiter apologized and said they were out of that. Not sure why he didn't know that when he placed the order. Then we ordered dessert and I received mine and she didn't. I ate all of mine and hers still hadn't come so we asked to just cancel it because we wanted our check. Waiter was very nice and said sure I'll cancel it and he brought the check. Then her dessert arrived! So weird! But everything was great. So we might come back and try again.

6 Blue Point + 1 Blue Point = 10

By Idonotcook |

I was just walking by and the saw the sign for $1 oysters and $4 beer during a long happy hour so I ordered 6 Blue Point oysters and a glass of Blue Point beer, all for only $10. It was so good I ordered another half dozen. This is definitely where I will bring friends who like oysters. I should try the Korean food next time.

Mixed impression

By KANewYork |

Fair Korean food. The seafood pajun (pancakes) were so-so. Some dishes like the octopus are pretty good. The fair is not as "authentic" as the Korea town restaurants, but the space and ambiance are definitely better. The lychee sangria tasted more like a fruit punch. Avoid it, unless you are in the mood for a fruity sweet drink. We were a large group of 10. They had no problems accommodating us. The food can be shared, so its a nice place to go as a group. Wait staff are pleasant, not pushy or overattentive. At times you may even feel like you aren't getting any attention and it may take a few seconds to flag someone down. They have a wheel with deals by the entrance. One person per reservation can spin the wheel and win a deal- we got some oysters.

great food great service

By jonah j |

Had an excellent dinner with great food, great service. Recommend and will repeat when in the area again.

Really nice place

By Luke |

Visited here with two friends in December 2016 on a Sunday night. The place had a great atmosphere and felt intimate and relaxed. The food was brilliant and the staff service exceptional, Korean food is not my favorite but I really enjoyed my experience here.

Thoroughly enjoyed the food and the visit!

By Snadra2 |

This was a lovely experience. The food presentation was excellent. Service was top notch. And, everything we had was delicious. Had an order of Tiger sushi, buns, and the Hot Stove Rice. I would love to try everything after this sample. Highly recommend.

Phenomenal Experience

By Doug K |

Outstanding food, great party space, wonderful staff...can't say enough about how great our experience was when we held an event at the restaurant for 75 people starting with drinks and appetizers in the intimate and private downstairs bar and continuing with dinner in the beautiful and elegant truly private upstairs room About half the attendees were from Korea or Korea. American and all of us loved the food and presentation. The quality of the food matched the generosity of the portions. Personal favorites included popcorn chicken, crispy asparagus, chicken wings, tiger rolls, carved beef, and bulgogi. The entire staff truly outdid themselves...a great find and the restaurant deserves to be packed with customers!!!!

Best soy garlic wings

By rachelia18 |

I ordered take out from here from trycaviar.com. The food was packaged nicely. Wings - got the hot wings and the soy garlic. The hot wings could have been spicier and the skin on the wings was a bit fatty. But the soy garlic wings were amazing and had a phenomenal flavor so I would have given five stars for the wings. Also pickled veggies that came with were sweet and addictive. Bulgogi- very nice, no complaints, also not stand out.

Terrific happy hour

By RedstoneBoy |

We came here for happy hour so I can't really comment on the main menu. But the $1 oysters were excellent quality and very plump. We also enjoyed a lot of the bar snacks including the pork tacos and sauteed mushrooms. It's hard to argue with $4 draft and $5 wine. Service was very friendly and attentive. All in all, a very enjoyable experience.

Very tasty

By Evagandri |

A small cute restaurant with very tasty dishes. 3 kids 8 to 2 years old and they all found something they liked.

Oysters and Asian food, yum!

By Deana S |

Stopped here for a bite when visiting Union Square on a Monday afternoon. Good happy hour drink and food menu. Blue point oysters for $1 each. Dinner service begins at 5p. Atmosphere is really neat..ropes for decor (barn theme), wood floors, super high ceilings. Vibe is energetic, elegant and cssual all at once. If i lived here, this would be a hang out for me. Service is casual. Full bar with a few craft beer choices. Food is fresh and delicious.

A sometimes creative take on Korean classics

By Mark K |

A very inviting decor and vibe located right on the West side of Union Square. Tap beers, pleasant and timely service although it was not crowded at lunch.

First time for Korean food

By Joseph K |

Ordered some bebimbop. Never had Korean before. It was a very satisfying dish. The American waitress was helpful re4viewing all my meal options. Would definitely return.

Creative Korean Cuisine Right In the Heart of Union Square

By S E |

The Korean food here is very delicious and very creatively presented. The choices for drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic are plenty and you won't be disappointed. The interior design is superb!! Check out the wall panel infront of the bathrooms: it shows a looping video of some Korean scenes that are worth spending a few minutes watching. If you happen to be at the Farmer's Market in Union Square and you are hungry, do check out this place and enjoy the food and drinks!

Great care in preparation...

By Porter L |

We were in need of some food with real flavor after the usual Thanksgiving turkey, green bean, and dressing extravaganza. And we found the right place! Aside from the well thought out interior, you could tell great care went into each dish that was served. The flavors of each item were deep, spicy and complementary. Just what we were in search of. I could sit and nibble on their black seaweed "chips" all day! And, portions were so ample that no one in our group could finish their plates. We left happy!

Great Korean Gastropub

By Klpatric43 |

I really enjoyed everything about this Korean gastropub located in Chelsea. The ambience, the gracious and efficient staff and the glorious Korean food! Our food was served quickly despite it being a very busy Saturday night and our waiter could not have been more attentive. So glad we happened upon this charming eatery. You will not regret it.

Excellent Service, Good food

By Annabella G |

I'd been to Barn Joo 35 and enjoyed it so wanted to give his location a try. I prefer the cocktail selection at 35 but otherwise comparable experiences. Brought a cousin visiting from Italy to eat her first Korean. I was so impressed by the outstanding service! Our waiter, the bus boy, the hostess - everyone with genuine smiles and so attentive and friendly. Wow. Terrific experience. I'm a bit of a bi bim bap addict (having grown up with a lot of Korean friends and working part time out of an office in L.A. Koreatown). I love that the rice here is a special purple rice -- nutty and delicious. I'm going to admit that the bulgogi is not my favorite and I wish that they gave you the whole egg and not just the yolk, but the galbi is excellent. Truffle fries - not what you'd expect here but so good! Fried calamari done just right and not greasy. The galbi plate excellent. Did not have bbq at the table but looked at tables around us and that looked good, and the tables are smokeless so you don't leave feeling like you need a shower.

Barn Joo Happy

By Reina B |

Visited with a group of coworkers for happy hour. Their happy hour starts at 4pm and offers okay prices for city happy hour. They have a pretty good menu for lunch and dinning. They had fresh oysters available.

Don't come here if you're starving

By Kimberly Z |

Better than average food-wise compared to other nearby Korean restaurants, but portions are really tiny, making this restaurant not such a great value.

Have good Corean experience!

By mano p |

Cheap and delicious food to share with friends! I recomend order a farm plat, that's included protein and side! Have good experience!

Such a bad service

By Krkfmfm K |

terrible service, bunch of Mexican how is this Asian restaurant. Food is average for the price, servers are just useless…

amazing happy hour

By Eric B |

New Korean restaurant with a great happy hour. Good deals and fun cocktails that were also delicious. Great atmosphere and solid food, although we only had snacks. Would definitely go back for dinner or cocktails again.

Amazing ambience and food!!

By BinkTravels |

My fiancé and I visited NYC for the weekend and I had a hankering for truffle fries. We were at Union Square when we started googling and Barn Joo was only 300m away from were we were. It's right on the edge of the square and the interior is SO COOL - rustic/industrial. We started with the potato croquettes and a tiger roll, then I had the tuna burrito with truffle fries which was one of the best meals i've ever had! I was apprehensive about the seaweed paper wrap but it complemented the stuffing so well. My fiancé was also thrilled that they had Sapporo on tap! Highly recommend.

Interesting Korean food

By JT88888888 |

Next to Equinox. Nice space with dim lighting. Interesting menu of Korean dishes and take on taco, burrito wrap, pancakes. etc.

Misleading happy hour

By kidstonecrusher |

This place advertises a multiplicity of drink specials to go along with their oyster deal for happy hour. When we entered we asked "is the oyster happy hour just at the bar?" And were told it was throughout the restaurant. When the check arrived it turned out that the "drinks" part of happy hour is just available at the bar. Bummer.

YUM!

By mikitruax |

I normally don't go for fusion food but this place is delicious! The authentic Korean flavors are all still all there, only the dishes are more creative than what you would normally find in a Korean restaurant, without being weird. The staff are VERY friendly and courteous, and who can say no to $1 oysters at happy hour? Chicken wings, uni bibimbak and fried tiger roll are all amazing. Definitely coming back to try the happy hour menu at the bar!

Electric

By Tony D |

Barn Joo didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was electric, the food was great and the service was outstanding. We were a group of 7 that approached dinner family style. This allowed us to sample a number of items. All was 👍. During my next trip I plan to sample some of the Asian inspired whiskey cocktails.

Very fast Korean BBQ in a fun spot

By Scott M |

We kept it simple: Japanese beer and Korean BBQ. The quality of the cuts of meat for the BBQ was first rate, and grilling at the table is always fun. The results were delicious. Good side dishes, but I think they could have been more generous with them, The service was friendly, the atmosphere lively. All in all, an excellent place to relax and have a fun outing.

Dinner and drinks

By Rachelle C |

Diana is the best server ever! The food was spectacular and the drinks… over the top. Diana was amazing and made our night memorable.

Good Korean Food with modern vibe

By penguinorama1 |

I had a late lunch here on a weekday, and had their Bibimbap and a glass of beer. They have a nice selection of beers to go with the Korean inspired Asian Fusion cuisine. They also have burgers and veg options.

Good Food!

By GilliGorilla |

We had beef tacos, dumplings, deep fried asparagus and a big paella that fed all 4 of us that had rice, beef, kale, broccoli, etc. Everyone loved it and we left full. Decided against BBQ'ing ourself as we were impatient to eat. The service from the food servers, busboys, water glass-fillers was super attentive.

Wonderful

By LolaJ8686 |

The bartender Evey was wonderful and such a pleasure. The drinks were reasonably priced and the appetizers were GREAT! I had the calamari, which was seasoned to perfection. It came with delicious sauces as well. Come for Happy Hour, you won't be disappointed at all!

Very chic spot

By Air Z |

Came here for HH, it's a beautiful space, food was very tasty, love the bar area, the price is a little higher than the most HH places, over all it was great.

Delicious, fun, must return!

By Sandra M |

Korean-Inspired gastro pub with a lively, fun vibe. Make a reservation & upon entering you get to spin the huge carnival-style wheel of fortune for a chance to win free appetizers or cocktails. There were four of us for dinner & we had a very positive experience with friendly service and well-prepared food. We chose the spicy octopus ($22) Bibimbap in hot stone bowl ($18) Chap chae ($12) and Bulgogi pot ($15). We all enjoyed our entrees. There is a super-secret unmarked bar that is accessed via a door that is well-hidden (impossible to see unless you know it is there) and opens to a dark stair case lit only by candles that leads you to a quiet little hole in the wall with excellent cocktails. Try the "Elder-fashioned" and the "Thyme grapefruit soju". FUN what else can you say about a place that invites you to upload your music videos to the "PLAY" page of their website?

first korean dinner

By david b b |

my first visit to a Korean restaurant. This place really sets the bar high. Service, atmosphere, and food all great. Will make an effort to go back there on next visit to city

Sooooo Good!

By Elizabeth M |

This is a delicious Korean Fusion Tapas restaurant the atmosphere is amazing and the food is delicious. The drinks we ordered are amazing the sangria delicious and the peach lychee is a yummy beverage. This restaurant is located between 19th and 20th Street on Broadway. The rice Hot Pot delectable. The sweet potato noodle item on the menu is a do not miss. Although this is a Korean restaurant all the food items are not spicy so you can choose from mild to spicy which is a nice option. I normally don't like revisiting a restaurant but this one I definitely would go back to again... Enjoy

Contemporary Korean Food, Cool/Rustic atmostphere

By Ginawin |

Found this by the Flat Iron building, farm to table restaurant. Had the Bulgogi Bowl, the meat was amazing and the sauce really topped it off. Had the flight of traditional Korean beverages, really tasty! Also enjoyed the Angry Salmon roll, it was pretty good. Really liked the atmosphere, it was rustic but contemporary at the same time. If you check in on facebook you can spin the wheel to win a free drink or something extra. Would recommend!

Disappointing Late Night Snack

By 15108JoJo |

We stopped in for our last drink of the night and snack around 11:00pm. The hostess was very nice. Our waitress was a bit scattered. There were 3 of us and we each ordered drinks. Only 2 came. Then the bartender came over to the table and asked if my husband was the person who changed their mind on which beer to drink. We just said we didn't get a drink! Eventually, he brought the third drink to us. We order apps and we waited quite a while to get them. By the time they arrived, they were just warm. I guess they cooled sitting in the back waiting for our waitress. The dumplings and "corn dog" was just ok. We won't be back.

ALL 14 of us LOVED it!

By ByAirByLandBySea |

I decided to celebrate my birthday here based strictly on reviews. I had never been here before, but, I will def be back The food is amazing, the atmosphere is very cozy, and the service is very good. We all had s great time. They took great care of us. But, the food speaks for itself.

Nice atmosphere so-so food

By WillW |

Went to lunch with a friend. Great decor great service. Very busy all afternoon on a week day. We ordered a hot bibimbap with bulgogi and a seafood noodles bowl. The hot bibimbap was relatively cold. The red hot sauce was not as good how I remember it at other Korean restaurants I've been to in the city. The seafood noodles was not bad though. We expected to have appetizers of assorted kimchee or tofu dishes which is typical served at a the Korean restaurant but there's none of that here despite of its high price so that's disappointing.

Unique style!

By Leti L |

My boyfriend and I went last night (4/17/17) and we stopped because we saw the grand opening sign and the ropes near the entrance and were intrigued. We had already had dinner so we really wanted to get a drink and check it out. The decor is great, honestly whoever designed it did a phenomenal job. We saw the $1 raw bar and were tempted however like I said we had already eaten. What I didn't care for is the bartenders attitude. I couldn't pronounce one of the Korean drinks and he seemed extremely offended and annoyed. WEIRD! After a couple of minutes of making me feel stupid, he said we don't have it. Ok. So we ordered something else, he got the drinks and we didn't hear from him the rest of the time we were there. Until I asked to close the tab and he brought the little bucket with the check, (that was cute!). Anyway, maybe work on staff customer service. Otherwise the food smelled great and looked very presentable from what we could see. The guy next to us said he loved his meal once he finished. I can't stress enough how cool the interior is. We're going back!

Awesome food and cheap!

By EliteTravellers |

My daughter in law and I visited , me for the first time, in Koreatown. No reservations but waits ot too long. Multiple tables set up in a small area and amazing how the servers can move around in and out . We ordered appetizers chili’s shrimp fried tiger roll and popcorn chicken. All served fast warm and so tasty. Definite recommendation.

BIBIMBAP A LICIOUS - Tip a phobic!

By K9TLS |

I just came upon this restaurant ... and wow how happy was I !!! This place serves a great BIBIMBAP - Not quite as good as you get in Korea but great none the less! I almost left the place due to the welcome as it appears that they want to try to make an atmosphere around the bar area so only offer 'Happy Hour' drink prices if you sit up there on uncomfortable stools. I chose to sit in the restaurant area so didn't get the happy hour prices but was able to hear and converse with my dinner guests. We all chose the BIBIMBAP and with the exception of one liked the chilli sauce that accompanied the dish. The great food made up for the appalling welcome and the fact that the waiting staff asked what was wrong with the service when the check was covered by a credit card with the tip planned to be covered by cash separately. If only the New York waiting staff were not quite so paranoid about their tips!! The waiter did get his tip but his reaction to the tip not being covered by the credit card payment nearly cost him ... In spite of the annoyance of the tip and the dreadful welcome I do recommend trying this restaurant out as the food was very good.

Great Gastropub!

By Ilana K |

Everything we got, we loved! 1. Yellow Tail! 2. Seafood Pot 3. Octopus Salad 4. Persimmon Salad 5. Rice Gnocchi 6. Scallion Pancakes The drinks were awesome too :) Delicious! Service was great. They were open on Christmas Eve! Had a great time with a group, but would be an awesome place for date. Awesome ambiance. Cheers!

Fun, interesting and very flavorable food

By Keith C |

We really enjoyed the total Barn Joo experience! We were greeted very nicely when we checked in for our reservation, and our waiter walked us through the menu very well (high marks for the entire wait staff). The food was unique, very flavorable (w/out being too spicy, for those who can't handle spice) and well prepared. I'll definitely go back!

Anniversary meal

By Lynne J |

The BBQ meat was delicious as were the side dishes. Service was very good. Quite expensive but well worth it.

Great Spot

By Fshah |

We came here for a group work dinner and were very happy with our experience. Ambiance: The vibe of the restaurant is very nice. Great for a date night or a group get together or just a nice simple event. Service: Staff was really nice and friendly. The service was quick and they came and checked on us often. Food: I'm a vegetarian and there were plenty of options for me. I found the food to be delicious and well seasoned. I also like the creativity and uniqueness of some of the dishes. Drinks: They have really delicious drinks. There were at least a few cocktails that I wanted to try. The drink I ended up getting was excellent.

Good Korean fusion and atmosphere

By Jo Le |

We enjoyed the good food and some drinks before going to the movies across the street. Tasteful food, which I recommend.

Disappointing...

By assamese |

I too visited this place because of a Thrillist reco. The decor is nice, service is good.....wish I could say the same for the food The fried-chicken is a disaster, the Ramen is worse that what I can cook at home. This place is more like a Karaoke bar, great to hang out...they have a giant TV screen in front of a dance floor....so, the food seems to be an afterthought. The wine portions are generous, but the selections are few (the server said, this will improve)

Terrible service freezing atmosphere

By TEW |

I went in alone to have a happy hour beer the gal at the host stand is so sweet! She doesn’t belong there. The other staff including the manager are so rude. There is no service inside for your phone and he doesn’t provide WiFi. I waited for 30 min with my cash on the table for my change. When he finally gave me change I noticed he took his own tip out already. This irritated me so much. The service was so bad and for him to assume that I wanted to tip him at all on one beer was ridiculous. So I paid and walked out. I will never return and I don’t recommend anyone else going there. The food and Korean sake is soooooo overpriced. $17 for a small sake.

Tasty Small Plates

By SmilynStef |

We originally went to Barn Joo 35 because we saw the pictures of delicious fried oysters on their small plate menu. However, when we arrive, the menu had changed and they were no longer there. That location was so noisy, we couldn't even talk. We were told they only had the Oysters at the main Barn Joo location, so we decided to make the trip there, since we had planned to head to that part of the City next. When we arrived at Barn Joo, we were told they had never had fried oysters, but at least it was quiet enough to hold a basic conversation (also pretty noisy), so we stayed. We tried the fried asparagus (6 stalks that were very crispy & tasty), the Truffle Fries which did have a strong truffle flavor (and very large serving), the Crispy Tofu, which was a bit spicy for us but perfectly cooked, and the Fish Buns which were very nice. They specifically asked about allergies, which was nice since my friend has a tree-nut allergy. I specifically ordered dishes that didn't mention nuts, but it turns out they would normally be on the Tofu and the Asparagus came with an almond sauce. Overall a nice meal, but still confused by the fried oysters on the on-line menu.

Great Korean fusion food

By Terence K |

Excellent Uni Bibimbap and Sashimi Hye Bibimbap, chicken wings and even cold brew coffee. The restaurant is really crowded even on weekdays during lunch. The service is excellent.

Food not bad, good oyster deal

By Miss_Aky |

The food was not bad at all. The ambience is a bit crowded so not conducive for large groups. The $1.00 oysters at the bar were great but tough to find a comfortable spot.

Awesome place!!!!!

By lynnma1224 |

I love barn joo. This is one of my favorite places in nyc. Amazing Korean food, the best cocktails and great ambience!! The short ribs, pork belly, chicken wings and jap chae are my favorite. But honestly, everything is delicious. The summer cocktail kiwi kiss is my favorite cocktail ever :) i could go on for days about their cocktails I love the new Kal-Guk-su. The crispy asparagus is really awesome. I love everything this place serves. If you love Korean food, you must get the bibimbap. The service is also awesome. My waitress tonight was so caring and generous. I've only had good experiences!!! I can't wait to go back.

Good happy hour and food

By nycgirl0729 |

We've been here a few times and the first time, Barn Joo gave us a bad vibe. Happy hour ends at 7:00pm, when we sat down and ordered two drinks at 7:01pm - the bartender would not give us HH prices! Couldn't believe it. We forgave and have come back multiple times. Our last bartender last week was great! We have eaten here a few times and couldn't believe how I had not had the uni bi bim bap yet! Wow! I'm a huge fan of Ktown (which is authentic and much better Korean food), but this dish is fantastic! I would go back just for this. Nice atmosphere and great space by the bar area. If you like modern fusion Korean food, this is the place to go. One star off for the first HH experience.

Scallion pancakes!

By Elizabeth M |

All the food was great, but the scallion pancakes were amazing. Try the fried kimchi dumplings, the tacos, spicy pork...those were the dishes shared at our table. I think you probably can't go wrong though. Get there early, fills up fast!

Good Korean in Union Square

By Antionio10 |

Everything was good, including the beef grill had good slices of various cuts of beef, and the fish bibimbap was very good. Service was efficient, but the overstretched prolonged the meal. The spin of the wheel with a reservation gave us a free beer which was fun and nice.

lively and great food

By David M |

This place is happening--filled with young people downstairs--and tables upstairs--away from the noise- Service was excellent-wait staff knew their stuff!! Food was great--and price reasonable---Highly recomended!

Prime Location Not So Prime Meats

By Sandip G |

A pseudo - Americanised - Korean BBQ that serves Corn and Cheese Sides with the meats rather than an array of Kimchis and other accompaniments. The Wagyu was far from Prime (probably Grade A1 or A2 at best). The calamari and peanuts arrived cold - the squid meat touch like leather shoe soles. The service was indifferent considering it was hardly crowded on a Sunday afternoon. Ordinary fare. So one probably pays the premium for the location rather than prime meat. There are any better choices around at Union Square. So, you won’t be missing much if you decider to give it a miss.

It is still good!!

By cavagnarip |

The food is so nice and different. It's my second visit. I recommend. The service is good and the food very tasty.

Fantastic!

By whas2013 |

It is the best korean restaurant I've ever tried in NY. Location and atmosphere was great, and service was also really cool. I tried many signature dishes and all of them were fantastic - I think they were better than my hometown. I would definitely go back when I visit manhattan again.

Solo Lunch

By SmilynStef |

I arrived at Barn Joo at 3pm for a late lunch; at the recommendation of the waiter, I tried the Korean Sizzling Rice Bowl. The hot steaming bowl kept the meal warm (although the rice on the bottom was burned when i got to that portion). The location was nice and great for solo dining. Happy Hour Started at 4pm with $1 Oysters, and the place was really filling-up when I left.

Happy hour drinks and oysters

By ndxn |

Sometimes, when the drinks start flowing, less-than-wise decisions will be made. Well, the first part was definitely the case when I met up with an old friend while I was visiting NYC. It had been years and we settled in before the after-work crowed really descended. The ambiance, while dark, was also very warm. The drinks started flowing but the latter part of the equation with which I started? Well, the more happy hour pours we had, the more oysters and shimp we ordered. All-around, I would stay that was a great decision because the oysters were great and made even better by the happy hour pricing!

Nice for happy hour

By DOMINARJVC |

Stopped in for a quick drink and bite while shopping. Happy hour is nice, oysters good but the sautéed mushrooms were amazing and will be back for more!

Good Food and a Great Oyster Deal

By Andy M |

I've come here twice once seated on a date and the food was great for sharing. We got a rice dish and a meat dish to share, the portions worked out great. Another time at the bar for the $1 oysters and was very happy with the service at the bar and loved the oysters.

Great weekend lunch spot

By SDS769 |

We tried the Union Square location during the Memorial day weekend. We ordered the soy ginger wings, kimchi fried rice, steam buns with marinated short ribs and the sizzling stone bowl giving with bulgogi. Everything was very flavorful. The giving was particularly good -very spicy. Recommend trying the beers rather than the overpriced cocktails. The New Belgium Fat Tire and the Brooklyn Sorachi Ale Raisin were a perfect accompaniment to the food.

Pleasantly surprised..great atmosphere

By kduvall11 |

We stumbled upon this restaurant while in the neighborhood. Intriguing entryway consisting of dark lighting and semi loud music. We were seated immediately and greeted by our server, Neil straightaway. He helped us navigate the menu and made excellent suggestions. The staff was very attentive and the food came quickly. I ordered the Jap Chae and it was really delicious. There were other items on the menu that I would want to try..Maybe on the next visit to NYC.

Fun Outing

By RLION51 |

Advertised as Korean Barbecue and Tapas. But the real emphasis and enjoyment is on the Barbecue one cooks for themselves table side. Had reservation and were promptly seated. Three in our party and shared dumpling appetizer which was more than enough when combined with the main course. One can order individually or choose from one of three sampler categories (Beef, Pork or seafood). We chose the Beef small (other size choice is large) which for about $90 was more than enough for the three of us. The meat included Short Rib, Skirt Steak, Ribeye, and Marinated Short Rib. Also an ample supply of vegetables and sides of Kimchi, Pickled radish, corn cheese, etc. Items were cooked by us on center console grill. Very tasty, fun change for normal sit down restaurant. Appropriate attentive service.

Excellent food and service

By Daniel L |

I made a reservation for dinner with 3 other friends. Apparently if you make a reservation ahead of time, you can spin this wheel at the hostess desk that gives you a chance to win either a free cocktail or appetizer. The food was delicious. We ordered the BJ chicken wings (spy garlic flavored), scallion pancakes, and grilled octopus for appetizers. Each was quite good, though I would've liked for the scallion pancakes to be a little more re crisp. We also shared the pork belly kimchi fried rice and wagyu beef 'paella' for entrees. We finished off with a pumpkin cheesecake. I'd recommend the thyme grapefruit soju as a cocktail. Service here was attentive. It took about 10 minutes to get seated initially though we had a reservation. But overall this was a very positive experience, and a very good choice for korean/ Asian fusion if you're not in ktown.

Don!t miss the.....

By GEORGE F |

the Korean fusion food is 'ok'; prices acceptable, service excellent, and the Blue Points tangy and served the way they should be....horse radish/catchup, all for a $1 per oyster! mignonette, and even a Tabasco-like hot sauce, as well!...well chilled on an iced platter. The joint's crowded and boisterous at cocktail hour. Their select beers went just right with the oysters. The bibimbop was a bit short on the side dishes ( spinach, kimchee, pickles) but never-the-less tasty. Nice to find a place like this.

Korean Fusion

By Shelrnyc |

The food here is ok. I believe we came early and caught the lunch menu. The options were limited. If authentic Korean BBQ is what you are looking for don't come here. This is more of a fusion spot. This restaurant is not terrible, just average. Our waiter was not that knowledgeable about the menu though. He was just an order taker. Now if you want good Korean eats head out to Flushing, Queens. If you can't get to Queens go to K Town.

Extraordinary Food and Service

By Ray |

We were here for a company training session and were fortunate enough to dine at Barn Joo. Due to the size of our group, we were able to use the downstairs location. .The entire staff at this restaurant were so gracious, helpful and eager to assist with anything. The food was so delicious. We dined on Philly Egg Rolls, Fried Dumplings, Popcorn Chicken, Shrimp, Oysters, Kimchi, Pork Belly, Braised Short Ribs, and multiple other items that were all top notch.

Delicious and Priced Right

By Cindy K |

Came here with my nieces for dinner. The food was excellent and the service was prompt but not intrusive. We each had a Bibimpap. I has the spicy pork, which was absolutely delicious, just the right combo of veggies and the pork had some zip but was not overwhelming. The dish was smoking hot in a stone pot that nicely crisped the rice. Excellent. We also shared the scallion pancake appetizer which easily fed three of us as a starter. Total for three people, including 4 glasses of wine and one cocktail (with tip) was $175. Not cheap but fairly priced for a really good meal in Manhattan. I would definitely go back.

$1 oysters

By jfedele85 |

I come to NY about once a year...and I came to barnjoo each time! The happy hour is amazing. We ordered 2 dozen oysters for the 4 of us....$1 each. We could have ordered 100! The bar area is SUPER busy so we had to wait a bit but it was worth it....we ended up staying for dinner and every one of us enjoyed our meals. Drinks were delicious too. Would definitely come back again and again. It is such a unique place.

Nice Eatery

By Barnseee |

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this place was. It had a nice atmosphere and was at the bottom of our hotel. It was pretty good so we ate their twice on our trip. All the dishes were pleasant tasting and i enjoyed this funky place. Would eat here again!

Fabulous food

By Brendamania |

We've been here twice. The food is incredible and priced reasonably! I love the atmosphere too! I will go back and highly recommend it!

Spicy and delicious (unfortunately) fried food....

By Taosharon |

Korean food can be tricky. The flavors are strong and for some people, take getting used to. This place is definitely worth checking out even if you enjoyed Korean food in the past. Unfortunately, the best things on this menu were fried. How about 5 asparagus spears deep fried for $12? Along with fried wings and fried tofu...maybe you can stay away from the fried food by sticking with the traditional Korean dishes or barbecue...This is good but only once a year..

Great Happy Hour prices

By NYArcher1215 |

They have a great value Happy Hour so that's why its packed from 4pm-7pm daily. Three different types of Korean wings to try and easy entree menu. For those who tap into social media, if you check in on Yelp or Facebook and show them, you get to spin the wheel and earn something for free, whether it be a beer or an order of fries. The bar area where Happy Hour happens tends to get very loud but the dining room area is a bit quieter if that's what you're looking for.

Great

By @Berryly.zero |

Great, "different" atmosphere. quite small and confortable place. Nice dishes on stones. we ll taking warm sushi roll..on hot stone. and soup...which was superb!

Good Korean fried chicken with outdoor seating

By jackspades |

Wanted to enjoy an outdoor happy hour and craving Korean fried chicken. Luckily we found this Union Square gem. Ordered two types of chicken which were both tasty. Outdoor seating on a nice afternoon was sparse but didn’t have to wait too long to be seated. Would definitely return

Stopped here in the way to 5th Avenue. We were not disappointed. We had the steamed and fried buns, Raman noodles and the shrimp tacos. All looked and tasted great. Service was swift for most, a wait for the Raman noodles, would have been good to be advised there’d be a delay but they were worth waiting for. Highly recommended.

Great Korean food

This hideaway was in walking distance from our hotel in Chelsea- and what a great find! We ended up going for happy hour- stayed for dinner, and came back again before we left for home. Great prices, delicious food and drink.

Great food. Great service. Would recommend.

Great food. Good service. Friendly environment Menu was wide. Food options for veg and non veg. Would def go back again. Asparagus and dumplings highly recommend.

An Unexpectedly Great Dinner

By rfreeman2015 |

I traveled to New York City for a long weekend. Its main purpose was to get together with several people with whom I worked in the 80's. One person in the group, whose restaurant taste leans a little eclectic, selected Barn Joo, a Korean Restaurant in the Flat Iron District. What a great choice that turned out to be. We knew it was going to be fun when we were asked to spin the wheel to find out what our free appetizer would be. The 10 of us were seated almost immediately at a long table. The atmosphere was lively and kind of bar-like. Our server, who identified himself as Boss, was upbeat and friendly, and took good care of us. The surprise, however, was how good the food was. Barn Joo is not a traditional Korean restaurant. Its cuisine can best be described as Americanized Korean. We started with a couple orders of appetizers--crispy asparagus, calamari and truffle fries. Those tasty morsels were all consumed in short order. For my entrée, I had the seared cod, and it was delicious. The second most popular entrée at the table was Bibimbap. Everyone was in agreement that the food was great. The food and the vibe at Barn Joo were perfect for our little reunion. We left there happy that we had such a great time, and Barn Joo had more than a little something to do with that.

Great Food and Great Service

By Lester Ojeda |

This was our first time here, and we’ll definitely come back. We went for the $29 all-you-can-eat BBQ lunch special and everything was spot on. The Bibim Bingsu dessert was a real treat!

Very good Korean Fusion food near Union Square

By kt3 |

Despite being full from a very large lunch and some wine and cheese right before dinner, we (3 couples) still managed to finish our food choices at Barn Joo. I'm not a Korean food expert but we enjoyed the Jap Chae, Kimchi Fried Rice, Bulgogi tacos, grilled octopus, Bibimbap w/ tofu, a few more smaller appetizers and of course Soju and Sangria to wash the food down with. The place is very cool looking: a long and narrow space with barn wood on the walls, dimly lit and a bit noisy, but a good crowd. It is a few blocks north on Broadway from Union Square. They take reservations and because we made them, we got a spin on the wheel at the reception stand and won a glass of wine. Barn Joo is a good place to go with a group of friends so you can try a bunch of different things. They also had fried wings but for some reason we didn't try them.

Love the fusion!

By Accrusion |

We ended up a Barn Joo semi-randomly, after seeing some good Yelp reviews … and it being close to our hotel. …And this ended up being the most pleasing meal of our entire trip! (But we also didn't hit any super-snazzy NYX restaurants.) I had a soba-kimchee dish, which I think was from the day's special menu. Very tasty combination of spicy and rich, with egg yolk adding significant umami. My wife had a pork hot-pot and was also entirely pleased. We both tried some Soju cocktails and found them delicious. Waitress was over-busy, and didn't keep up with us as much as we would've wished. But she was nice, knowledgeable, and helpful. We liked the vibe and decor around Halloween.

Excellent food, fun atmosphere

By Edward K |

The bibimbap with bulgogi (meat) is excellent. For dessert, chocolate moose with a side of green tea ice cream and a slice of caramelized crispy Orange is out of this world. The atmosphere awesome and the service excellent. Highly recommended spot in NY.

Great service, good food.

By aph03 |

This place is fun and animated. We had a few good dishes, but the stand-out was the Japchae with beef. Our server was very helpful and patient, and the drinks were inventive and delicious.

Neighborhood Gem

By TommyMcCall |

This Korean Gastropub is a great find. They do have a branch near Union Square soon to reopen in Feb 2017. For a bargain, heck out their lunch specials, but not a big difference if you go for dinner too. The food is presented with love and everything we had tasted great. You can eat health or hearty--it's up to you.

Yummy food

By Florence B |

We happened on this restaurant when there was a downpour outside. It was an amazing surprise. It was pescatarian friendly and combined amazing flavors. Everything was absolutely delicious from the fish tacos to the scallion pancake and the noodle dishes. We were just wowed.

Unique flavor combos

By Christine L |

Sushi salad and calmari salad - both very tasty and super fresh! Oh and the chocolate cake - yummy! All servers were prompt and happy, so I'd love to try another dish.

A lovely place to eat

By Kelly B |

My husband and I visited this restaurant a couple of times while we were in New York. The food was really good and so were the lemonades. The staff were friendly and attentive,a lovely place to eat.

Bye-Bye Barn Joo!

By Mark W |

Used to be my favorite go to place, even followed them from their original location on Broadway, held business meetings there on a regular basis... until I was completely abused by a dumb supposed manager named Kim, treated badly by a cold, nasty bartender and got no response after writing the owner to let them know what happened. Obviously, they don't give a damn about their customers experience nor their untrained and mismanaged staff. Too bad, but there's a ton of other places to spend my hard earned money...this is NYC after all! Bye bye Barn Joo!

A nice surprise, great food but service is not experienced

By Yogaholic |

we discovered this cute little Korean Country Style restaurant on a walk by and were determined to get back to eat there. The decor is Farm style lots of wood, rope interesting lighting with poems painted on the upper walls. We were early dinner customers although they offer a great Happy Hour in the bar. They had a special on oysters; $1 each fresh Bluepoints were the freshest and most delicious i've had all year. We ordered a salad with greens and pomegranate dressing which was also very good. We shared a large Spicy seafood stew which had mussels, scallops, in a kimchi broth which was good. Beware if you don't like it real hot this dish isn't for you. I usually like heat but for me this was burning hot. My husband on the other hand loved it. Maybe some rice would have helped the heat factor. Food great but the service was all over us. Two busboys and they brought everything out at once rather than pacing the oysters, salad and main we had to rush to finish just so they could put something on the table. Since there were few in the restaurant they wanted to be busy but don't rush people because the food is ready. i would go back for Happy Hour which looked fun

Barn Joo

By Jake S |

George was great. The food was awesome. You can’t go wrong here. We got the meat platter and it’s the best Korean bbq in Union square.

Great find for happy hour

By Katj002 |

We dropped by here after a little research on Yelp (sorry Trip Advisor) and WOW what a lovely place! They had a happy hour happening with beer on special and lovely cocktails as well as little bites and oysters. Very cool deco with a full moon at the bar and a very tropical feel. The menu looked amazing and we cant wait to go back!

Korean-Japenese Fusion

By Jade T |

This was the restaurant that was below our hotel. It was unexpectedly good. It was really busy and full of life. The atmosphere was casual but cool. Staff were friendly and they had a cool promo going (very clever) which was if you checked-in to the restaurant via Facebook, you had a chance to spin the wheel they had which offered free dishes or discounts off your bill. We managed to get free apetisers of grilled mushrooms which was lovely. Our mains were pretty average, not what we were used to for typical Korean food which is usually quite flavoursome, especially the pork bulgogi. I think the Korean flavours were toned down a little possibly to suit the clientele. Hubby's duck confit was a little dry but still nice. Overall still worth a visit for something easy and casual.

Good food

By Akira S |

I went to Barn Joo with a small group of friends on a Friday night around 9pm. The place was packed, but we were seated fairly quickly because we had a reservation. I made a reservation through opentable so I got to spin a wheel and won free truffle fries! All of the food we had was very good. We had the scallion pancakes, steamed buns, truffle fries, chicken wings, and bulgolgi bowls. The service was alright. It was very loud and our waiter seemed to have a tough time hearing us. There may have been somewhat of a slight language barrier too. However, the bus boy who was in charge of filling out water was on point. Our water glasses were never empty. I would go again!

unexpected

By H Lee |

Went with friends after a show... From the first looks wasn't much, but the Korean fusion type of food was just the ticket for a late night snack. The only downside was that it closed so early... I think 11? for a Manhattan eatery/bar would have expected a little later. Also noticed not a lot of people. This is a gem... Nice bar, nice setting, nice place to hang out with friends and nosh

Good food but rats at premise!

By dallalhh |

Visited Barn Joo today at 5pm. Good service and food (Korean BBQ) but saw rwo rats running around on the upper floor after finishing eating. Avoid until they get rid of the rats!

Great surprise

By Jeff W |

Family took us there to try. We had the Farmers meal and it was a great combination of Quinoa rice, chicken, lettuce and other plant leaf wraps, a good soup and a small portion of Kimchee. Great atmosphere and helpful service.

Great atmosphere and food!

By valeria_vally |

We just accidentally picked this place and it was the best discovery of the night! You enter through a heavy velvet curtain, which gives to the place a misterious and fashinating taste. Next to the reservation booth, there is a huge wheel ready to be spun by customers who sign-in the place on Facebook or Yelp. We did so, and we got a free kimchi! yay, it was fun! The food was simply delicious, thai cousine at its best. While eating we saw some people getting out a hidden door next to us and we wondered where they were coming from. When asked the weitress, she told us about the speak-easy bar they have at the lower lever. The choice for our next stop was just made! Exciting and excellent place!

noisy room, and rather slow service

By iceman2907 |

After almost a full day wandering around Manhattan, we decided to stop there for a drink. We got a table quickly, but then service was quite slow to get our order, and then to get our drinks. Also the place where we were sitting was extremely noisy (next to the entrance). it was difficult to talk to each other. Cocktail were good though.

Lavender honey cocktail was delicious- $1 oysters at happy hour!

By Emma Z |

Cute place, pretty big on the inside. Came here for some cocktails and $1 oysters at happy hour. I had a lavender honey cocktail that was good. The oysters were good but I didn't like the cocktail sauce. Other apps were good too. Nice staff and I was thankful for a charging station at the bar.

Delicious Korean BBQ!

By Brian P |

Made a rez here for myself and 2 friends for bbq. The gracious host seated us in the upstairs mezzanine which is where the bbq grill tables are while downstairs main dining room does not. We were greeted promptly by our lovely waitress who was professional, pleasant, and on top of everything. We ordered the small beef combo, added marinated chicken ala carte, and 2 additional sides besides the many sides that comes with the combo order. We also had 2 rounds of specialty cocktails. Everything came out quickly, presented beautifully, and when grilled was delicious. If you're looking for a fun, cool place with delicious Korean bbq, this place is it. You won't be disappointed!

Lunch

By Jannine K |

Last day in New York and walked past this place and decided to have lunch. Delicious meal and much nicer food we have had whilst in NY. More like what we are used to in Melbourne, fresh clean and not fried with cheese all of it. Recommend this place for lunch

Great spot!!

By socioqueen |

Don't miss this joint just north of Union Square by about 2 blocks. It's a great location if you're tired of overpriced restaurants in this area - it can get overly pretentious in Manhattan these days for no reason pretty fast, but Barn Joo is just chill and you could feel like you're in the Bk or your fave nabe spot as a result. I had the bimbimbap and it was filling and delish. Fair warning, most food there is spicy and if you add spice...you might need some milk! My friend was sweating over his chicken appetizer. Service was stellar and ambience is cool. Love this spot!

good food great service

By lmandm |

Staying at the Hotel Verite, this is the affiliated restaurant and offered a 20% discount for hotel guests. The good was very good and the service excellent- prompt and very friendly. Great wine list and excellent choice of menu items. It is a very dark restaurant, though, making it difficult to see what you are eating. The was a very loud party at the bar seating and using offensive language that negatively impacted my visit, but staff did offer to re-seat me. Definitely worth a try.

Dinner by Moonshine

By Julian H |

A very cozy spot near Herald Sq. Great staff, made sure that everything was on point. They even gifted us drinks and some fries after our food as a gift due to their recent opening. The food tasted very fresh and well prepared. There were both traditional korean style foods, as well as some more locally adapted meals. Like mentioned before a quite cozy atmosphere with big "Moons" lights on the walls, even in the bathrooms. The only downside were some very loud girls by the next table, although they sure weren't there permanently.

Good and unexpected

By 3Cuori1Capanna |

A friend recommended the place as we wanted Asian fusion and were not disappointed. Ambiance and food were great. Price very good as well. Korean American fusion was unexpected and really appreciated I will definitively return.

Blue point oysters $1 each Happy Hour every day

By DPN2 |

Enough said. Excellent. One looked “mealy” and I sent it back. I got two in return. Nice service touches like wet wipes eye droppers for vinegar and Tabasco. Nice atmosphere. Drinks were okay but not 5 star.

Very noisy and strange way of serving

By Beth Z |

We were able to get seated here quickly on a Friday night, but not a good table and not one where Korean BBQ was available. We ordered drinks, appetizers, and small plates which were all served haphazardly. Two people were served and half finished eating by the time the third was served with an appetizer meant for sharing and an entree. The food was good but the music was so loud and full of base there was no chance for conversation and it made ordering difficult. If you want Korean BBQ then you need to make a reservation for upstairs.

Great dinner

By Rachyrach90 |

Great food, small servings for USA which was great. Really tasty fresh food, the kimchi pancakes were yum. Limited drinks choice though.

Beautiful lunch specials

By kim s |

Excellent dishes. Tried the vegetarian dish. It was delightful with a great friendly staff. The only take cash. Visit the atm first. Wonderful experience

Don’t go

By ruru |

Very bad for the price point. Go to Ktown for Korean food. I got the Subdupu Soup, it was alright. My friends got the bibimbap and popcorn chicken. MID DO NOT COME HERE PLS GO TO KTOWN

Cocktail Hour

By marield1990 |

We came here to celebrate a birthday for cocktail hour and wound up staying til 11! The beeline cocktail was very good along with the beer choices. We got the truffle fries, fried dumplings with shrimp and beef and organic chicken wings all with the soy ginger sauce. Delicious, especially the wings. The skin was nice and crispy and the dipping sauce for the fries was also delicious. The decor is lovely and the bar is long. The bartenders were very attentive and got all the orders right despite the loud volume. The only thing you have to watch is the bar gets crowded and there are tables across from the bar so waiters and bus guys are constantly going by so it can get tight, but other than that a great time!

The food was good but the service was not

By Beansiegal |

Food was good but the service was not. My group of 4 and I came on a Friday night as a walk-in around 6:20 and were told the wait was around 45 minutes. We actually received a text that our table was ready at 6:45, which was great. We walked to the restaurant from nearby and checked in. One of my friends didn't really love the table option we were shown (as it was right next to the hostess stand), so she requested a different table. The hostess staff said there were no other tables open and that it wouldn't be possible and no waiting would change this. Basically, take it or leave it. This despite us seeing other tables throughout the restaurant. But okay. We were then sat with Happy Hour and regular menus Our server did not come by for 7 minutes and when we attempted to order from the Happy Hour menu we were given, he told us that wasn't possible and that it was after 7. We explained we were sat no later than 6:55 and we had been ready to order before 7. He apologized but refused to allow us to order from the Happy Hour menu. How do you even offer up a Happy Hour if it doesn't last until the time you advertise? This was very disappointing. Interestingly, moments later, the table next to us attempted to order from the Happy Hour menu too, and they were also denied by the same server. However, they had been there longer than us and presumably had ordered already from the menu. But shortly after, they were brought out complimentary shots for the inconvenience of not being able to order from the Happy Hour menu. This was not extended to our party. Not a huge deal, but it certainly made us feel less valued than the table next to us. Our group ordered many Tapas and our server never came by to ask us how the food was or if we wanted more drinks, which we all wanted. And when the server thought we were finished with dishes, he removed them without asking us when there was still some food remaining. There were a couple of dishes we were not finished with, so this was irritating. We ultimately did order another round of drinks once he came by to ask after we had finished our food, but this were merely the result of good conversation and not a positive reflection of the service we had received to that point. I will say, the server was never rude or anything, but at these price points, the service should have been infinitely better than it was. Also worth pointing out, I tried contacting the restaurant directly and never received any response from the email address on their website.

Korean fusion

By MJMH |

if you're used to the restaurants in Korea Town NYC, this will be a little different. It seems to me to be more focused on Korean-influenced favorites rather than classic Korean dishes. So you'll find tacos, wings, sushi, even a burger - all with a Korean twist. My guest had the shrimp sushi roll and enjoyed it - quickly fried so it was hot and crispy outside. My spicy pork tacos was good, served with salad. Certainly nothing outstanding, but worth a visit if you're in the Union Square/Flatiron neighborhood.

Amazing sampler

By WilliamBurgos |

Very cozy place with a lot of traffic. For drinks my recommendation is there sampler. Food is good specially if you are staying in the hotel next door.

Great place!

By Stefan Polte |

Had the fried sushi (but without having it fried ;) ). It was just perfect. Service was really good, location nice. $$$ was - considering quality, taste, service and speed - absolutly fine. Would have paid more.

Fascinating Korean take of a gastorpub

By RonWamberal |

A total change from my fine dining of the past few days - a great Sunday lunch with no pretensions. Well located near Union Square and Flatiron, it was a new experience dining in a Korean gastropub and eating tacos. Had a spicy pork taco for $15 that included fries and a lemonade. Even the hibiscus lemonade was a treat. Excellent value. Fascinating murals and artwork - no connection to perception of a Korean restaurant

Delightful

By Letsg0m0m |

Went for lunch with friend. We had bulgogi beef taco and fish wrap. Both were delicious. So flavorful!! I look forward to eating here again and trying everything else.

A discovery

By Stephane S |

Popped into this restaurant by pure chance. Never had Korean food before so I did not have any expectations. Themed interior, nicely decorated with soft lighting. I went for the Q&A salad which was very fresh and very tasty and my partner had the spicy chicken wings. Overall a great lunch and o am now converted to exploring Korean food.

Barn Joo 35 West 34th street New York, NY

By Matthew F |

My wife, 12 year old son and I were in town and looking for a bite to eat after visiting the Empire State Bldg. We had some friends try to steer us away from 34th street for Korean as they had a bad experience there. I knew there were a number of places on that street and decided to take a slight risk and hope Barn Joo isn't where they ate. We decided to order some appetizers first to gauge the quality and then dive in with more dishes if things went well. We ordered the pan fried dumplings, spicey tofu and fish cakes. Wow! they were all great! We ordered some meat balls and a couple of sizzling rice bowls (spicey pork and bbq chicken) with broth. Again, these dishes were top notch. We had some blackberry wine which was very nice as well. The service was top notch. We were touched by six different service personnel who were all professional, helpful and personable. Our lead waitress named Winter was informative, patient and attentive. The service times were excellent. A complimentary order of truffle fries toward the end of our experience was a nice touch. They still had the "Grand Opening" decorations in the window. I understand this place has only been open for a few weeks. They have done a great job of crafting a top notch dining experience in a short time. Super reasonable prices-We left $100 which included 20% gratuity. $100 for 3 in NYCity! wow.

Korean in Union Square

By Hege M |

Though they have bibimbap, bulgogi and galbi on the menu, this is not strictly traditional Korean cuisine. Rather a fusion of Mexican, American and Korean. We had the more straight up Korean stuff like bibimbap and fried dumplings, which were super yummy. I’m not opposed to trying a bulgogi burrito. Don’t see why it wouldn’t work, minus the mayo of course, which is randomly sprinkled throughout the menu and has no place in hot food, in a burrito, on corn cheese? Thankfully the mayo is announced so I can stay clear. Oh and do try the herb infused cocktails?

Bye bye barn joo

By 2you |

Excited about eating Korean food for the first time. I ordered kimchi fried rice. Full portion, rice well cooked but kimchi was sparse, maybe only 4 pieces of good spicy kimchi. Didn't want the tap water served in a black beer bottle so I asked for a bottle of sparkling water: $7.00! While eating I realized I was humming along to 50's doowop and 60's pop hits, definitely not the type of background music I expected. Over all, over priced, dimly lit. Will not return. I will seek out a more authentic restaurant next time, not a big fan of "fusion".

Barn Joo! Excellent Food, Excellent Experience!

By Maria J |

Barn Joo has a lovely atmosphere, excellent food and amazing service. We had the mushroom soup, and the chicken and pork belly BBQ. Our server Diego helped us figure it all out and made our experience unforgettable. While we waited we had awesome cocktails!

Disappointing Lunch

By Vela |

Went to this Union Sqr. branch last Saturday (6/15) for lunch and were seated upstairs for the BBQ table. Was totally disappointed. Service was mediocre - we ordered appetizers (soy garlic wings and Tuna Mayo Tartar) but forgot to give us plates. For main entree - we ordered Beef(Short Rib,Skirt Steak, Ribeye, Marinated Short Rib) , Scallops and Thick Cut Pork Butt Steak from their BBQ menu. The beef and pork meat were just OK (definitely fail in comparison with the taste of the meat at Jongro) but the scallops were tasteless and just a waste of money. I did not get the same traditional Korean BBQ vibe as in K Town. Maybe we should have gone to their branch at 35th. My hair smelled BBQ after the meal. They don't have the pull-in big exhaust pipe most of the restaurants have in KTown. The only thing I like was the 1-Thyme cocktail I ordered. The cost of our lunch was $230 (for 3 people) and totally not worth it. Will not recommend and will not definitely come back.

Loved it

By Rochelle A |

Wasn't sure about the cooking for ourselves but we had a lot of fun, and the best part if you didn't want to do this, there were plenty of other options. Service was prompt and friendly, food was great.

Too Late!

By steven_wilkinson |

For a 'city that never sleeps' it was a bit odd that when we called into this place at 1030 on a Friday night - they had closed the kitchen and sections of the lounge in readiness to turn off the lights and lock the doors. For the short time we stayed - all I can say was the beer was cold, plenty of water on offer - staff were very attentive and the atmosphere was - well - it just was not what I was expecting for New York! Maybe it's not the whole city that stays up late! I had to select a score for food - but I could not score it - the kitchen was closed - maybe next time?

Very interesting ambience, good food, poor service

This restaurant's appearance looks very interesting and original and we decided to visit it. My co-worker and I went there for lunch and were disappointed with their service. Although the staff is friendly, they are not attentive. I got different order and had to wait another 20 minutes to get my lunch and had to remind them twice that they forgot to bring sauce. Lunch time is limited and people can't wait 40 minutes to get their food! They apologized and offered to comp tea, which was OK. If you decide to go, make a reservation and you will get a chance to spin a wheel, so you can get some incentive (discount, free side, etc.).

Best Spot in Manhattan

This is hands down my favorite place to dine solo, bring family & friends, etc... ❤️ the food, drinks, & service are all exceptional. All of this quality really starts from the top: the GM of the restaurant is incredible with both his customers & his staff. The bar manager really knows her stuff, & radiates kindness & warmth (& lightning fast service!).

tasty, spicy seafood japchae

By jklugmn |

stopped in for lunch yesterday. had seafood japchae - the noodles were made in a seafood broth, and served with a couple of mussels, a couple of clams, a couple of shrimp. it was surprisingly spicy, about at my limit- i enjoyed the dish, however. i noticed a few specks of crushed red pepper, but i have a hunch the noodles had been heated in a pepper infused oil. there was no marking on the menu btw, like you see in some restaurants, telling the patron which dishes are spicy. perhaps they all are. i also tried the edlerflower fashioned- bourbon with elderflower liqueur- which was very good. i would go back again, but if you don't like spice i think it's not for you

Kool Korean Fare

New Year's Eve day, we decided to go hang around the NYU area. My wife and I were craving some Asian cuisine. Korean is always the first choice - wife's heritage. We poked our heads into Barn Joo, looked that the menu and that was that. Barn Joo is a good looking space, high ceilings, attractive bar, BBQ upstairs, regular menu downstairs. Seating is a bit tight, but not unusual for NYC dining. Service was speedy for sure - which we liked. The menu offers a range of really interesting items - fish tacos, crispy tofu, fried chicken and classics like bibembop. I thoroughy enjoyed the Fishermen's Soup - clams, muscles, soft tasting broth with ramen noodles. All of the items we ordered were exceptional. Taste, flavor, presentation all done to a high level. Barn Joo is a very solid restaurant. Good eating and safe travels, Colin

Good unconventional Korean food

This is a good spot near Union Square. I really like the decor. But it's a bit dark and the air conditioning in the front of restaurant was not working well. Our server was nice, knowledgeable and attentive. We started w/ the wings (spicy) which had a nice crispy skin and tasty. There were about 6 wings. Good portion. The brisket saam was interesting. Very light. Love the pickled radish that you use to wrap the ingredients. Good but I would not necessarily order this again. The scallion pancake was flavorful but I thought the salad on top was a nice refreshing touch but very handed in the dressing and it was salty. My bf had the spicy seafood japchae. He really liked it. I had the Uni bibimbap and it was the best dish of the night. I've had hibimbap in every way possible and this was amazing. There were three different types of fish roe, the quinoa added a nice texture and the seaweed was amazing flavor added but that sesame oil added a real richness. And who can say no to Uni. Must get dish. I will return.

Great Korean brasserie

Too many choices, not enough room in my stomach. The kim bop was delicious and the fried oysters were wonderful. I'm definitely going back to try more things. Half price happy hour cocktails always are great too!

Amazing Food

Had dinner with my husband after seeing an off Broadway show at a nearby theater. We walked in without reservations. Very friendly staff. Very fresh and delicious food. Would definitely come back when in the area and would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Happy Hour

Passed by, and noticed that we could be seated outside. The place was pretty packed around 5pm due to Happy Hour. The atmosphere and ambiance is excellent. The service outstanding. Will be back. Free WiFi.

Excellent small plates with a variety of intereting options along with full entree choices. Everything was wonderful. Place was crowded but service was excellent.

Good Eating Bibimbap

I ate here on a Sunday afternoon. I had the tofu & mushroom bibimbap and tasted very delicious. The rice underneath the cast iron pot is very crunchy. The spicy sauce for the bibimbap is sweet and I believe it's homemade. Price is average in Manhattan. The environment at the restaurant is very zen with tree trunk and rocks in aquarium tank with different type of nuts. There is even a swinging bench.

A trendy take on Korean fare

By WindsorTudor |

A gastropub-inspired take on classic Korean barbecue--Aside from classic kimchi, innovative side dishes include haloumi (highly unusual, since cheese technically doesn't exist in Korea!). The barbecue grills themselves are situated in the center of each table & get extremely hot, creating a sweltering interior--in Korea Town, they're more appropriately/comfortably designed off to the side). If it's true Korean cuisine you're after, stick to K-Town, but Barn Joo provides an interesting alternative.

A bit pricey but tasty happy hour

By Cynthia M |

Nice happy hour place, however it ended up being a bit more pricey than expected since we ventured off the happy hour drink menu. I had copious amounts of Korean Fried Chicken and it was really tasty. A bit different from BonChon and Turntable since there is a very light wet glaze on it, but still very yummy. Happy hour prices for food are quite reasonable and you can even sit at a table in their lounge area to enjoy it. Prices on liquor not on the happy hour are a bit steep, but if you aren't particular about what you drink, you should be able to get outta here with a relatively low bill. Nice vibe and good spot for a quick dinner or happy hour.
