A must when I visit

By AmazingTravels |

Always a wonderful experience visiting this place for my bagel fix. This is an old-world style establishment.

Great nova and sturgeon.

By wamzie |

Went here with a friend while in town for a business meeting. I had never tried sturgeon and figured this was the place. It was a very mild fish and I would order it again. Also, make sure you try the black and white cookies.

Great pumpernickel & lox!

By Edward D. |

Opened in 1908, less well-known but older than the Lower East Side Russ & Daughters, the staples of Jewish-American cuisine (lox, bagels, pumpernickel, blintzes, matzo ball soup) are at least as good or better here. Come during the week, because it’s packed on the weekend & bring cash because they don’t accept credit cards.

Perfect spot for breakfast

By Elizabeth L |

On our quick two day stay in New York City, I am so happy we stopped here for breakfast. It was an overcast morning and we enjoyed eating outside. I selected the house gravlax and my husband had the eggs with onions and lox. Both dishes were served with bialys and were delicious. We also made sure to purchase a dozen bialys to take home.

Overpriced

By Jean S |

Barney Greengrass is legendary on the UWS. However, a takeout plain bagel with cream cheese and lox costs $22.86, which is outrageous! Be warned!!

Barney GreenGrass YUM!

By Charles F |

Hello Friends! if you're looking for the best Jewish deli in the City, look no further,,its Barney! My second visit this year -- everything is so fresh and YUMMY, service is great and they even have a bakery you can take out from! NO IFS AND OR BUTS, A MUST EAT!

Yummy breakfast at 9am on a Sunday

By lovetravelChicago |

We at breakfast here at 9am. We had no wait at that time but it filled up quickly right after and there was a wait. The service was efficient and attentive. We all struggled to get the plates on the small 4 top table but they managed. Clearly the waitstaff has been doing this for a long time and have it down. Leaving was fine...cash only on the weekends and it was a battle to get past the waiting patrons to pay but we made it. The food was very good. The eggs were fine but the stars here are the fish, clearly. Between us we sampled eggs, bagels, whitefish, whitefish salad, sable, kippered salmon. The fish was excellent. Well cut, just a few bones. Extremely tasty. The eggs were just plain. Next time i will order just a bagel, cream cheese and fish sandwich and skip the eggs. The table next to us order the special latkes...they raved about them but we did not try them. In short, this is a classic. It rivals my favorite Russ & Daughters which seems to have a larger selection but is great if you are on the UWS.

Always our first stop in NYC

By GregLaw |

I have been enjoying the smoked fish here for over 35 years. Best smoked fish in town. Love the Nova sandwiches and the eggs and nova are wonderful. Usually very busy and worth the wait.

Finally Made It Here

By BruleLaker |

After walking a good number of blocks 11 years ago, we arrived to find it's closed on Mondays. My 85-year-old mother was not too happy! Last week we went back on a rainy Tuesday, arriving just past 1. We opted for the sturgeon and sable on sesame begals, each getting a half. Both were excellent; I preferred the sturgeon. Yes, it's pricy - now up to $21 - but it's an expeirence, Washed them down with diet Dr. Brown's black cherry (me) and cream soda (her). Friendly service; counter guy had no problem with me taking photographs. Recommended for a true NYC experience; make it a habit if you're wealthy.

Excellent Deli Style Food

By Avi P |

This is an excellent Deli to eat in or take out. Good variety of sandwiches and other delicacies (Matzo Ball was very popular in cold January 2019), Sturgeon fish sandwiched and corned or roast beef sandwiches are also great. reasonable prices, good service.

Great new york atmosphere and great breakfast

By willam c |

I rate this place at the top of Jewish deli/breakfast places in the US! Their specialty is seafoody items of all types. My excellent server suggested the Nova Scotia salmon plate---fantastic salmon cooked with eggs--and a great bialy with a huge slab of cream cheese. And coffee. This wasn't cheap--but it was such a good meal and great experience, it's well worth it! I recommend this place for all ages and interests.

Great Deli

By Ms. Travel |

Great New York institution. Bagels and Lox, corned beef, potato pancakes, chopped liver..long waits and cash only but definitely worth it.

Ok but not good

By Andy F |

Disappointing visit for brunch Sunday morning . Positives : great atmosphere , lots of families . Great , free refill, coffee. Freshly squeezed half pint of Orange juice . Negatives : 35 minute wait for arrival of so-so scrambled eggs and salmon. Waiter suddenly remembered me and appeared seconds later with food , eggs hard as though in pan for a while. Salmon bland .The "bialy" he recommended when I asked what it was ( " like an English muffin - try it " ) was baked not toasted , hard and tasteless white bread . The bill was $28:50 for me, with food as listed above, which was painful compared to other meals this week. I so wished I'd dug a bit deeper on Tripadvisor and not gone for the headline act , I passed several to get there which looked good , less crowded and cheaper .

Nice environment

By Tyssen |

Nice family environment, very loud as lots of kids were around The French toast was great and the bagels were good. I would come back

A real New York experience . Featured in “ Revolutionary Road “ ( a Leonard Decaprio movie from the 90s )

By rdmiller_pcj |

This place is iconic and a real gem . Ambience is out of this world . “ Old timey “ in the best possible way . Staff is friendly , possessed of charm , helpful and . knowledgeable . Food is unlike what you can find anywhere ( smoked sturgeon and scrambled eggs ) . Great recipes . Fresh , high quality ingredients . Carefully prepared . DELICIOUS ! A real “ New York experience “ !

An upper west side institution

By DFR1 |

We enjoyed our lunch here. The borscht in a glass was very good...pureed and tasty! The pastrami sandwich was enjoyed. The cole slaw was average cole slaw. The whitefish appetizer was good sized and tasted delicious....just watch our for the small bones!

Loved the Sturgeon

By Rick T |

Recommended by a Polish friend 3 of us met at 10:30 on a Sat morning for brunch. Place was busy but we only waited 5-10min to be seated. Tables are very cosy so be prepared to knock knees with your friends. Service was good and coffee plentiful. Shared some Latke’s which were great and ordered Salmon, Sturgeon and scrambled egg with a bagel felt I had to try as BG is billed as the King of Sturgeon and I had never eaten the fish before. Will certainly be searching it out on menus in future as it was great. Atmosphere was buzzy and we all had a great time. Just a point to note as it did catch a few dimes out is that they only take cash so come prepared.

Amazing Breakfast

By Emilio R |

If you want to have a perfect taste and delicious breakfast, you have to go here to try the food, even if you are not Jew, you will enjoy it. My favorite, bagel with all and Salmon.

Great bagels, quintessential NYC deli experience.

By Rozontour |

Great place for breakfast, omelettes and pumpernickel bagels excellent. Would definitely come back. Smoked fish varieties also looked amazing. Friendly and welcoming service.

Superb Food & Service

By Eurosnbaht |

I've only been to this place 3 times because I don't live in New York. Each time I've visited however, I've absolutely loved the food and had excellent service. It is a bit pricey- but the quality makes it worth the splurge. This time (last week) I had a young gal server who was great at recommending what I should order. She was spot on. I had the house smoked salmon appetizer. In addition, I had a cucumber salad in a fabulous vinegar dressing. I'm pleased that I arrived early, because when I was leaving, the place was packed.

Not worth the wait or money

By caneguy |

I have been to NYC so many times I cannot remember the number, but never have I gone to the classic and infamous Barney Greengrass. I have mostly stayed in the upper west side while in NYC so it was not a logistic issue, just did not find the time or desire to go. So now I live in Orange County, CA moving about two years ago from SoFL. And in Orange County CA you cannot find a Jewish Deli and for sure cannot find whitefish salad. So off to BG I went with my son and my cousin’s daughter (who lives in the area). I had heard all the stories about BG, the long waits, the rude service people, and of course the great whitefish and other deli items I cannot find in the OC. Well, we got there around 12 on a Sunday and to my surprise NO WAIT. I guess maybe it was the Sunday before the 4th of July so most of NYC had already begun a long week off of work (I guess it is great to work in NYC with a holiday mid week. My son told me half his office is taking the first part of the week off and the most of the other half the second part with many just taking the whole week off.) We did get the rude waiter, after a 5 minute wait after sitting down and not being acknowledged he walked over and said “what do you want.” We ordered a corned beef omelet and two whitefish salad sandwiches (one open face for an xtra charge) three coffees and an order of potato latkes. Now it was all good. I can honestly say that the deli near were I used to live in the Boca Raton area had a pretty good whitefish (and with eyes closed I probably could not tell which one was from where) but it is not even close to the charge that BG gets for a whitefish sandwich. The total bill came to $71. Of note, on weekends it is cash only, during the week they take credit cards. So all in all I am glad I went but it will be my last time. I will wait for a SoFL trip for my whitefish fix (or find another place in NYC) with better service for a lot less money.

Best deli EVER

By SScott2000 |

Went here x2 days in a row with friends on a trip to NYC as it was recommended to us. It is sensational. The food is enough to bring tears of joy, the staff, ambience and decor is authentic and comfortable. It will be a go to place for me from now on whenever I visit NYC! What a gem!

The Real Deal

By CnMBath |

This deli is a must. Our group had not just the best deli food we found whilst in New York, but the lovely no-nonsense staff gave us great service. I think we all had bagels which were stuffed with some of the best salmon we've ever had, and the coffee was delicious and free flowing. You can also treat yourself to some of the fantastic fare that was available from the take away counter. Don't just take our word for that, take a look at the pictures of the typical celeb's that frequent Barney's for a Hamptons hamper.

Old time delicious breakfast

By 22DF |

If you like hand sliced nova for breakfast, this is the place! Best eggs I’ve had..with nova and whitefish. Nostalgic service and delicious food!

Best smoke salmon bagels in New York.

By Raphael R |

Barney Greengrass is so popular for a reason. The best bagels in New York, the best smoke salmon in the city and they do the best range of fish like sturgeon and herring in the tri state area. King of the breakfast and brunch locations in New York they also offer the whole range of European Jewish dishes from Latkes to Matzoh ball soup. The main deli offers take out from the their great menu plus additional items. Super fast service too from their excellent waiters.

Great Waiter.....

By mwhite62314 |

It was our last day in NYC.....and we wanted a Deli. Son, directed us to Barney Greengrass and what a delight. Earlier in the week we had been at the frantic Katz's and had a good sandwich....but here. Chicken Liver Pate-out of this world. Wife and I had two high octane priced but excellent sandwiches, pastrami, corned beef with slaw and russian on rye.....I want one right now. Our waiter suggested a good bagel for son...sturgeon pricey but so good. Our waiter was considerate with tourist types who were obviously not regulars as the folks next table over who did not even need to order, food just appeared. But for us, he did a great job.

Now I know why Anthony B. highly rated this place

By Yesie B |

Excellent smoked fish selection. Ordered the deluxe platter for two. All of the fishes were somewhat fresh but for some reason didnt like the fish with the bone.....somewhat fishy but maybe it is just me.... Ordered additional lox but didnt get what we expected...it looked like smoked salmon with scrambled egg and doesnt taste as great as when we ate it on Summer 2015 and winter 2015. Service was not up to par...had to clean up the new table we decided to move to since the old sitting was near dusty boxes and a big black trash bag (not sure if trash is inside or just some packing material). Bagels are as soft and tasteful as we first tasted them 2 years ago. Do order the ones with the garlic and the sesame. Really hope Barney can improve and retain its reputation as advertised by Anthony Bd.

PASTRAMI

By davesmith1990 |

Went here today for lunch and to shelter from the snow. I had the pastrami sandwich on rye. The best pastrami sandwich I have ever had bar none. The service and decor are amazing. A definite must visit.

Scrumptious Sturgeon

By Margo B |

If sturgeon is a favorite of yours, this will take first place. It clearly earned its stellar sturgeon rating as the best there is. Try it and decide for yourself. For me? It has no equal. I can hardly wait to taste it again. Yum! Yum!

A New York Experience

By Ruth D |

I wanted to treat an Argentinian friend to a real New York experience. Barney Greengrass was my restaurant of choice for lunch. We got, of course, lox and bagels with great coffee. As my guest remarked, "it has such a cozy feel to it!" Try it. You'll love it! Ruth

Keep coming back

By JustTravl |

If you understand the concept of Deli's in New York, you'll love BGG. Good, no frills, hearty food. Eggs with lox, herring, orange juice and coffee to start the day, There is no better. Been coming here for years and its still great!

OMG I loved it

By E V |

I was in NY for the first time and unforunatelly only for 3 days It was hectic schedule, but I wanted so much try something that says - New York. At one point I Googled 'bagel & pastrami'...followed directions to a nearest place with best reviews. My first reacton was wooow. Bagels all arround, fridge packed with smoked fish and other great goodies, people who work there (many) just running arround..it was bussy, loud (in a good way). Fortunatelly got the table. Service was great.. and food...well I really really liked it. Salmon pastrami with cream cheese and bagel, family ordered lox, eggs...everythig was perfection. So...that's it. They are fantastic ! Do not miss this place. My best NY experience !

Breakfast

By Robert L |

Decent old-world food and ambience. Fabulous service. I had an onion omelette which had NO presentation but was very good with caramelized onions. Prices moderate for NYC.

SUPER TRAP FOR TOURISTS ...!

By ErMatador |

As per the title. Tested because indicated by several guides as a historic place in the Central Park West area. Outdoors it looks pretty good with some tables on the street and many photos with illustrious characters on the windows. First impression entering the room, where the sale of products and food is also made, is of a very scruffy room, very dirty very messy. Entering on the left there is a small room with a dozen tables. Also here very shabby environment very dirty ditto the waiters wear stained uniforms and very old. very very extensive menu both of sea and land with some of their smoked fish specialties that are offered at gold weight and for really small quantities. A club that is a real bluff! Absurd prices, non-existent service and coup de grace at the end... DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS! only cash floors! Come on! Wake up! This is 2024 in New York City! Bad, stay away in the area it gets better.

Deli

By ana carolina f |

I always wanted to eat in a real deli, and this was the perfect place! Delicious chicken liver appetizer, and big and tasty sandwiches, such as the tongue in rye. Service was fast and friendly. Great experience!

What Happened?

By Ken E |

We’ve been going to this place in NY visits for years and always loved it. But we made a trek up here on our first post-Covid visit (to introduce our daughter to great NY deli fare) and it was a complete bust. Service was slow and disinterested, food was mediocre at best. (Latkes were room temperature, matzah soup was like dishwater, even the bagels were barely adequate). Felt like we wasted a meal on a short NY visit.

It Started Off Well

By Matt S |

Started off well, a bit cramped, but it is a small restaurant. If you are a bland food eater, this isn’t your place. Food was ok, a bit pricey though. Issue came when we paid the bill. We left the correct cash, and tip, only to be chased outside by the waiter, who showed his true colours! Claiming we hadn’t paid enough, after numerous counting we gave them extra, although we knew we had paid enough in the first place! Didn’t upset our visit to NYC, but our only example of poor service, and attitude.

Not bang for the bucks

By Michael R |

48 usd for a simple breakfast. And did not taste well. The waiter was not nice. I feel cheated. Will not come back 🤮

Little gem on upper west

By michellew28 |

Great Mewish deli on upper west side. It is an institution steeped in history. Cafe is famous for its smoked salmon selection but standout was definitely the cream cheese blintzes dolloped with sour cream.

Thanks a brunch!

By Al C |

Came here to fuel up before a day’s site seeing on a local’s recommendation. We arrived and it was packed, a promising sign and we were not let down. Waiters were very friendly and typical NYC sense of humour and I was had when our chap said ‘I’ve got a good feeling about this’. And what a good feeling it was. Delicious smoked cod and salmon on pumpernickel bagel, with lashings of cream cheese and endless coffee top ups. My only negative is it is quite pricey, and annoying they don’t take card, but have to say well worth a visit, if perhaps not every day!

Fantastic

By simon98765 |

We are here 3 times the food and service was great. Very authentic and pleasant environment. Highly recommended the best of the deli's I visited in NYC !

Overrated and overpriced

By Sally B |

Came here for lunch. There was a line outside but was seated after not too long. Very crowded seating area. Waiter was very engaging. The food was nothing special and so overpriced. $106 for a sandwich, 2 bagels, latke and 2 coffees. The whitefish salad was terribly bland. I would not go again. Ever.

Latkes, smoked salmon and bialys!

By JET trips |

A classic. Go with a bialy instead of a bagel. The sturgeon/smoked salmon sandwich combo is fabulous. A side of green pickles goes nicely.

Slipping?

By SisBoston |

This typical New York Jewish deli was as busy as ever the day we were there. The food was quite good, but the portions seem to have been reduced over the years. We were surprised that the bagels didn’t seem as fresh as we had expected. The fish was good but not drop-dead fabulous. The brusque service has not changed. And the coffee is still weak.

Lox that melts in your mouth

By RWdenver98 |

The review could be one word: Amazing!! This might be the best lox (smoked salmon) I ever tasted. it is a classic NY real deli focussed on breakfast. the bagels are fresh and perfect, the smoked fish: lox, sturgeon, whitefish/white fish salad. I was there last Sunday for brunch. it's so good you might eat twice in one sitting. I did. Cash only.

Great food and experience

By NICHOLAS T |

This deli is slightly off the tourist trail, but not too far from Central Park and worth a detour. The speciality dishes are centred around fish and we had pastrami salmon with scrambled eggs and a salmon and cream cheese bagel. The food was great and the atmosphere and set up of the deli old school. There is seating inside and outside.

More history than taste

By Arrozglutinoso |

We liked Barney's a lot, but more for its old style, serious waiters and attractive clientele than for the food and because it belongs to a disappeared New York. The food is smoked fish and baggels, all delicious, but nothing else. Go just to reconcile with history and if you've eaten before, so much the better.

Bad waiter ruined the experience

By Cathy N |

Good fish in an authentic deli, but the rude young waiter ruined the meal. I ordered a sandwich on bread, but he brough a more expensive appetizer plate with toast (I'd expected seeded rye as good as Zabar's but this was unseeded and tasteless). The waiter was an entitled millennial who gruffly asked "Ready?" instead of a more polite "What would you like?" then banged down two half filled glasses of water. The bus boy was far more gracious and deserved the entire tip we left. We won't be back.

Come for the bagels...stay for the LOX!!

By daniel p |

Absolutely wonderful bagels in the traditional NYC style...chewy with a delightful crust. No rainbows here...but the star of the show?? The LOX! Absolutely positively the best salmon available...on the planet! Perfect smoke and consistency...no gimmicks...just fish the way it should be eaten on a bagel....nirvana!

Loved this place!

By Nickyd85 |

Really loved this place, very friendly staff, AMAZING smoked salmon bagels and scrambled eggs, shame we came on our last day in NYC, we will come back next time we are over for sure!

Shrinkflation?

By lafcomike |

So I’ve been coming here for nearly 50 years and have always enjoyed the smoked fish sandwiches and platters . Yesterday’s visit, my first since COVID , felt like visiting an old friend. The bails sandwiches were tasty and the atmosphere was what it always has been. However, the potions have shrunk dramatically. Our sandwiches were minuscule as compared to what they used to be. Each sandwich was finished in four bites as the bagels are now much smaller and the amount of fish was tiny. The latke plate was the same size and delicious. Perhaps BG is resisting raising prices, which is appreciated , but clearly they are making up the difference by shrinking portions

Classic

By Rappongi27 |

On my visits to NYC I always try to fit in a deli. This is often it. We were here for breakfast this time, and had some quite good salmon and eggs along with knishes and whitefish salad on a bagel. All very good (albeit it I thought the knish not on the same level as the other stuff) . Portions are decent sized and the coffee is good. Besides, where else are you gonna get lox wings? (Didn't have it this time, but have in the past, this is a nostalgic visit to the past on a plate.) The ambiance could be considered either awful or great depending on just how nostalgic you are feeling that day about old fashioned NY delis, but there is no arguing about the quality of fish here. Service is friendly and efficient, but brisk. Dinner ware seems to be left over from 1950, along with the wallpaper. Prices are midrange and value is good.

Great food!

By Sue R |

It's a classic spot on the Upper West Side with somewhat brusque service and an air of self-importance. But once the incredible food arrived, none of that mattered anymore. I'll definitely be back.

Simple the best- A NY classic

By LSB |

It's hard to visit New York and not visit BG. This is consistently the best smoked fish. It feels like walking in to a woody Allen movie. Love the whitefish salad, kippered herring and borsht. This is a must! PS. CASH ONLY

great lox

By rickil333 |

I went to the upper west side mostly for the bagel with cream cheese and lox. the lox was excellent, but enough cream cheese. wait more that 10 minuets to get the bagel it was good but price was much too high for a bagel.

No need to eat again that day!

By RoriESQ |

This is a NY institution and everything an appetizing joint was back in the day and should be today. I keep returning to refine the perfect order and still want to order the entire menu. Must try the latkes and every fish available on the side. The eggs and onions are sweet and delicious. The meat eaters swear by the chopped liver. Get in line, meet your fellow neighbor or visitor and have enough time to walk it off!

A Popular Tourist & Upper Westside Institution. Awesome Breakfasts

By Arthur G |

Barney Greengrass has been in business for over a hundred years. Many movies and TV shows including Seinfeld and Law and Order have been filmed there. While you can come in and spend hundreds of dollars on caviar or just get bagels and smoked fish to go, you can also wait and enjoy a delicious breakfast or lunch at one of the many tables in their cramped dining room or literally inches from where people are picking up take out from their long deli counter. We came by on a Saturday morning to find a crowd of people waiting for a table in front of their storefront. On the advice of of one of their customers, we put our name on a list for three people and told the person with the clipboard, we’d be back in 45 minutes. When we returned, they told us “ two minutes” and within 90 seconds, we were led to a table, not in their dining room but in the area that was once part of their grocery store, very close to their smoked fish takeout counter. The restaurant was packed and noisy but no one was complaining. They only take cash, no credit cards are accepted and it might be a good idea to stop at a cash machine before sitting down for a meal, especially if you are hungry! The prices on the menu are startling. It’s hard to get breakfast for under $20 per person! However, everything we ate was fantastic! I had Scrambled eggs with Nova Scotia salmon and onions with a cinnamon raisin bagel. It was Delicious! The waiters are fast and the service is very impressive. If you have recently won the lottery, you might consider getting their caviar platter for $600! While there are places where you can eat breakfast or lunch for a lot less, if you want to experience a great New York Institution, where you’ll leave a little poorer but feel very satisfied with your meal, you have to go to Barney Greengrass!

Good food in a classic deli

By Mark W |

Good food in a classic deli on the upper west side. Service and food were memorable. The deli offers excellent takeaway as well

First time here. I won't be back.

By Margie C |

I usually shop for lox and sable at Zabar's but thought I'd try Barney Greengrass out. The sable was good. The pickled lox was a real rip-off! Zabar's charges by the pound and weighs the chunk of salmon only. And the creamed onions are a separate package and included in the price. Greengrass however, has the pickled salmon already combined in a jar which means you're paying the high price for onions and not just the salmon. The bagels were very good I bought there. But I will not buy from this place again. Sorry, but facts are facts. At $46/pound, I don't expect to pay that for cream sauce or onions!

A slapdash deli where the meal was not memorable

By l0ul0u29494 |

Barney Greengrass is a true Jewish deli where you can get just about any kind of smoked fish you can imagine. But it is tired and I'm guessing not too clean. The service was a bit of a performance but that doesn't mean it was good or enjoyable. We were frankly a bit disappointed -- the food itself was MEH.

Great Sandwiches

By taedwards69 |

I came here for lunch and had the lox and bagel followed by a Pastrami sandwich with coffee. The coffee was delicious and unlimited and both the salmon and pastrami were excellent. The food wasn't cheap (it came to around $35) for what were effectively sandwiches but everything served was delicious.

Great service, tasty food

By sismith17 |

We ate breakfast here. The restaurant is pretty relaxed and unassuming. The menu is relatively extensive. The service is friendly and efficient and the food is fresh and tasty. We walked for a couple of miles to get here before going to the natural history museum and it was well worth it.

Upper West Side mainstay

By Dan P. |

Went for breakfast on Black Friday. Old-fashioned Jewish deli setup with two rooms of tables for dine-in and two counters for take out such as bagels, bialys, dessert breads, cookies, house made fish specialties. I ordered the nova salmon with eggs and onions which came with either a bagel or bialy (I went with the bialy). The entire meal was delicious and the waiter was high-spirited and helpful.

The best in NYC

By Jim H |

We have been ordering by phone and having it shipped to Charlotte for years. The products are the best and packed and shipped in an expert manner.Everything they sell is special. There is a reason that Zagat rates them the #1 deli inNYC.

Heaven on Rye....with a pickle!

By Stylelust |

Flavors I remember from growing up in NYC. When Carnegie Deli closed, I cried as that was my door to this wonderful, unknown world of Matzoh Ball Soup, super pastrami and more. No one in my family cooked like this. So my westside friend, the one who knows how to cook, invited me to get my passport in order and head west and up. I thought I was meeting her at a smoothie joint for children. Imagine my surprise to be taken back in time...this family establishment has been around for over 100 years and has been the site for many a movie and celebrated event. How did I not know about this heaven? You cannot get or make a reservation. You can charge or cash which is great because you will want to carry out all sorts because of treats to keep the memory alive as you head home. Bagels are beautiful. Yes I will return as I have twice since being introduced in January. Everything is good.

Lunch

By edwin b |

Wanted to have lunch before heading back to SoCAL and my son came up to the upper west side and as we wanted deli as we hadn’t had it on this visit The place was full rather a crazy mess not well upkept and service was king of rude Had a Ruben and a lox sandwich coffee and iced tea $57, cash only asked cashier for explanation, could give it then found out charged us $6 for refills and even then was $54.50 Left a $10 tip and waiter gave me a dirty look Not worth the time and effort

Satisfying

By Toni S |

Having moved from NYC in 1983 we still crave good pastrami which has eluded us! So while in NYC we visited this place and was pleased with our pastrami, pickles and did I mention the coke slaw that you can only get in a Jewish deli! We would go back. A long wait but worth it. The service was also very good!

Great food & fun environment

By Julia T |

We ate breakfast here on a Sunday during our trip. We loved the atmosphere & food. It's busy & a bit crowded, but a typical NY deli experience. The smoked salmon & whitefish are delicious. Order them with a bagel. A fun place to people watch too.

definitely worth the brief wait

By BobMiles10003 |

Everything went well. Host was really accommodating for a wheelchair. She was sweet. Waiter was helpful and nice, I even went to the counter after the meal and asked questions - and they were nice. Great to see an old business still remember how to treat customers. The potato pancakes were great. They were a touch sweet and very light, best I ever had. I'm not a fish person but I tried friends sturgeon and it was good. I had the pastrami and eggs on a bagel. Wife had blintze. Big menu - something for everyone. Yes, it is a bit expensive, but this NY and everything is a bit expensive and this was no more expensive than most. When I left I felt I had a really good value. 5 of us ordered pickles, herring and potato pancakes to share, plus everyone ordered their own meal and it came to $120. That's fine $ wise but ost important - everyone was happy!

Excellent place for a breakfast.

By SophieOnyn |

Their salmon and pastrami are delicious. Bagels in many different flavours. Coffee unlimited. The place to be for an excellent breakfast.

Oustanding deli institution

By Sean C |

My sweetie and I come here annually for my birthday. Too expensive for more frequent visits (and cash only!) but most definitely worth it for the occasional splurge. We started with one order of potato latkes with sour cream and apple sauce. Yum! My sweetie's regular is whitefish salad (the SALAD - not just whitefish) + Nova salmon + tomato + capers on untoasted plain bagel. We learned to skip the cream cheese as it's too much and confuses the flavors. Sometimes I have what she has or I go for a scramble. In memory of the late, great Anthony Bourdain who loved B.G., I order Bourdain's fave: scrambled eggs with diced Nova Scotia salmon + onions, totsted plain bagel on the side. So awesome. Service is always cheerful and quick. And the coffee's great, too. Be sure to have a look around the deli counter half of Barney Greengrass; the fixtures, counters and cases are original and authentic.

Barney Greengrass Brunch Delight

By ArtsyGalBaltimore |

Jammed, I mean Jammed with local "hungries" and a few tourists like us. Quite a hubbub with plates quickly served with New York wit. My husband's triple decker though enormous was devoured. I had an egg sandwich with corn beef ob a bagel. Bring CASH! Highly recommend for a NY deli experience where diners and staff have a zest for life.

Barney Greengrass great place for breakfast

By Sherpa51368317626 |

Amazing food, the staff was very friendly. my wife and I, shared broken juvies with salmon, Latkes. We didn't eat much and we could share a plate. We met some diners too.

Family loved it!

By Mauricio S |

I had eaten at Barney's several times, mostly when I was at work in the city. And finally, I managed to take my family there. They loved everything: the food, the old fashioned way of serving, the location. It's a real NYC experience!

Busy breakfast eatery

By Sue M |

Six of us had breakfast in this famous breakfast place. Our waiter was very attentive and the food took a while to come. The food was tasty consisting of various omelettes (salami, corned beef), blintzes, lox, and yummy bagels. My only criticism would be the bill. Our breakfast cost about $60 per couple which I think is a bit pricey for breakfast! But then again it's New York!

Great lox

By NearStarbucks |

It was something out a Seinfeld episode, tiny cafe with a store up front. They only served different smoked meats with eggs and/or bagels for breakfast. But the Nova Scotia lox appetizer with a bagel was delicious and not very salty. It was a fun experience because it was not some place I would have picked out on my own. So if you are looking out of your “box” give it a try, it won’t disappoint. No restroom however!

A temple for smoked fish!

By Ted A |

I had a great plate of lox, sturgeon, and eggs at Barneys. I also sampled the sable and it was outstanding. Great NYC ambiance. Hopefully I will return when I'm back east again. There is nothing like it in sfo.

A-mazing

By Geekontherun |

I loved to get take out of the chopped lived. Today I ate breakfast and did takeout too! The food was incredible as it typically is! I ate the nova platter. I only wish they did not cut it in half as a sandwich. I prevent it open faced and being able to place the nova myself. The red onion was perfectly sliced. The orange juice was freshly squeezed and delicious. I ordered an appetizer of chopped liver with a bialy (recommend). It was amazing. This is the best chopped liver on the planet earth! Not just my opinion. I did my takeout and had it placed for my trip home! ❤️

Good

By jordansbulls |

Went here today and got the Pastrami Bagel on Everything. Good place to go. Good food and easily able to order even if people are waiting for a table.

Tasty throwback

By nytreez |

Had to try the Nova eggs and onions and can't wait to return for some of the other smoked fish delights. Service was friendly, abrupt, accommodating and amusing. A waiter said that a guy wanted coffee and water and he didn't understand why because the coffee tasted like it was watered down anyway. Classic NYC staple that doesn't take itself too seriously. I enjoyed the code although it was a weekday lunch. Weekends are bound to be packed.

Good goof with oldstyle ambiance

By WGG1962 |

First time back in over 25 years. It looked the same. The food is delicious. It gets crowded so you have to get there at a good time to stand in line. We were there on a Saturday morning. service was good. The place needs to be cleaned. Maybe it is the outdated ambiance but at some point a place just looks old and needs to be updated.

Authentic NY Deli

By John M |

We’re from the South and really wanted a true NY delicatessen experience while on vacation. Wow - we hit the jackpot with Barney Greengrass. Pastrami, matzo ball soup and black and white cooked - they’ve got it all.

Great food with nostalgic feeling.

By ldjs |

This is an old deli with traditional Jewish deli menu and excellent selection of smoked fish. Sandwiches are great, especially hot pastrami, even matzo ball soup is flavorful and has proper thin noodles. We had smoked trout, excellent flavor and serving is a full fish. Pickles are wonderful, even full sour have great crunch. Will be coming back for sturgeon and sable. The place is old, crumped with waiters in white uniforms, seems like will fall apart any minute, but yet does not, and there is definitely charm in it. No credit cards, pay to the guy at the counter. There is an equally crumped storefront with all the delicacies in very narrow quarters. Real New York Jewish deli experience, especially if you into smoked fish or good pastrami and pickles.

Very good deli style

By Mandy W |

I was recommended to visit this place by a friend who read a rave review. I would not have gone in if she did not recommend it but I am glad I went. Very fresh and good selection of fresh fish options. The waiter made it for me. He kept topping up everyone’s coffees and even gave me a sample of their famous sturgeon fish which was very good.

A bagel with sturgeon for 23 dollars?

By nnuch |

Walked Central Park and stopped in to get a few bagels and husband ordered a bagel with cream cheese and sturgeon- the order came to over 23 dollars. We paid and left the premises because we felt unwelcome from the start. Not a friendly place either, one server was making me feel unwanted as a customer while I waited for our order as there is no where to stand or even if you wanted to look around you could not do it. Won’t return.

Everything I want in a NYC deli

By Jeff B |

We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Wait staff is efficient. Latkes are tasty start to the meal. Smoked fish done at an elite level. We each had a mix of white and salmon smoked fish with mine on an excellent NYC bagel. The inside is perfectly adorned and screams vintage deli. We loved this place. Egg dishes are great too!

Great breakfast

By Uko |

Great breakfast; I loved the place and food so much, I ate a lot and could eat nothing more till next morning, bagels are definitely worth to try

They take credit cards because I used one

By stuartled |

Not sure where all the cash-only reviews are coming from but it’s not true. They definitely take credit cards. My check came to $60 for breakfast for two people. Yes, this place has good food but is outrageously expensive, even by NY standards. You pay at the register, not at your table. The woman asked me if I wanted to put the tip on my credit card. I said yes and she preceded to give me the cash when I told her how much, and I then brought the cash to the table where I was sitting and gave it to the waiter. Interesting system but I guess it works. Anyway, I’ve eaten good lox and eggs and other places that are a lot cheaper so I doubt I’ll be back. It was fun to try anyway. The place was packed so my thinking is there are an awful lot of rich New Yorkers who like this Upper West Side institution.

An Institution

Fabulous meal and fabulous service. Best tuna I've ever had in my life. Fun spot for breakfast/ brunch. Even if you're not staying in the UWS, make the schlep.

Authentic, old New York

By AnnaMEA1974 |

Wonderful sandwich place with a multitude of different bread, cheese, salmon, meats... the atmosphere is very authentic, old New York. Local regulars. Friendly staff. Small.

Best bagels/salmon

By 1dartman |

Got here early on a Friday morning before the rush. Great service, great bagels and salmon. Not cheap....

Long Live The Sturgeon King

By Stan Tecza |

Signage outside partially obstructed by scaffolding. The “Sturgeon King” portion blocked. Ordered eggs with sturgeon, lox and onions on a sesame seed bagel and enjoyed the dining area. Bought some Halavah and pastrami lox to go next door at the take out section. Cash Only. Vaccination papers not requested but oral attestation deemed sufficient. Masks worn inside even with vaccination. Great place.

Old country fare - loved it!

By WildKiwi |

A wonderful breakfast that brought back memories of my childhood! Great sturgeon, lox, potato latkes and bagels/bialys. I didn’t have to eat lunch! Really great place.

Great Breakfast

By Bob C |

My son found this place for all of us to eat breakfast. What a great find too. The menu is quite extensive with many delicious offerings. Everything was fresh. Coffee is always filled without asking. Atmosphere is New York busy and enjoyable. Staff is old style at the ready to take your order.

Amazing fun experience

By SAKALIN |

This was a wonderful place to have breakfast. It was a bit expensive but worth the food and menu choices. Lox, sable , whitefish....so many bagel choices. Potato latke's were good but just a little greasy. Fresh squeezes oj was sweet and delicious. Small tables close together. Waiter knew the menu and was helpful. I was told on weekends the line is out the door so best to go early or during the week.

One of the best Breakfasts in NYC

By Jason Whitholm |

May be one of my favorite restaurants in New York City. Great old school atmosphere with incredible service and the best breakfast in New York. Love the eggs and onions, fresh OJ, coffee and everything else here. Definitely in my top 10 of the best restaurants in NYC. A must go. A New York institution.

Awesome! The best bagels in NYC!

By Raphael R |

Awesome! The best bagels in NYC! The bagels with lox and cream cheese are delicious. The OJ and coffee great. I also loved the lattkas! One of the best places to have breakfast in New York imo. I went twice. The second time I got take out to eat back in London. They wrapped up my lox cream cheese bagels nicely. Took them on the plane and I ate them the next day at home. It was so perfect! I’m really happy. Thank you BG!

Smoked seafood at its best.

By anastasiabrown705@gmail.com |

I love smoked whitefish.salmon lox. Sable with its creamy fatty buttery texture....but Barney green grass, is over the top food. Everything authentic fresh made, and not cheap.but we'll worth every penny.

Classic Upper West Side deli - get the sturgeon.

By alexisrachelletx |

Classic UWS deli! I'm embarrassed to say I'd never been before - but when I lived in NYC in college, I didn't often venture up to the UWS and I was more of a budget bagel gal. It's such a traditional deli look inside, that I loved it the minute we walked in. When at the "Sturgeon King," what to order? Sturgeon, of course! So, I ordered a black coffee and sturgeon on pumpernickel with all the fixings. It was delicious. I love lox, but I always forget how delicious sturgeon is on bagels since it's not as common (especially as we now live in the South where a good bagel is hard to find and almost all lox is store-bought, not house-made). My husband got a pastrami lox on pumpernickel and enjoyed that as well. The service was good, the restaurant is old school, and the food is great. Definitely not a budget breakfast, but a great breakfast!

TOO CROWDED, CHEEKY WAITER WHO THOUGHT HE WAS A COMEDIAN; UNFUNNY AND RUDE); LOX ONIONS AND EGGS, REHEATED, SMALLISH POR

By peter l |

Used to be steady customers with my wife; stopped going in response to exorbitant price increases. decided to give it a shot with my brother-in-law. What a disappointment. On a weekend, very crowded, a small table for two, unfunny, rude waiter; Food: lox, onions, and eggs, which high price or no, was outstanding, was way below standard; reheated, tasteless, a waste of money - would/ve done better going to a diner on Broadway - Cafe 82. No returning for me.

Ate Till I Busted!

By Culture812596 |

I did not have high expectations as I thought it would be hype without substance- WRONG! No matter the popularity, they are dishing up excellence in their Matzoh, the sable, the nova, the sturgeon (of course!), the bagel, and the coffee was even wonderful! This is a wonderful place for no nonsense but great food done right. On a cold March morning this was a perfect place to warm up and fill up. The staff were busy but everyone was taken care of and the coffee was bottomless. Bring cash and come hungry - you will be glad you did! I will be back.

Great bagels

I love this place. Everytine I am in NY I visit for breakfast. They have great bagels and pastrami, the atmosphere ia so cosy

Fun deli

By Jay B |

Great food and service in this classic old style deli. We did a sit down lunch, it was delicious and speedy. I had the sturgeon and egg sandwich, my wife had the chicken liver sandwich and motza ball soup. Everything was marvelous.

Breakfast

Ordered a mushroom omelet with potato fritters and sesame seed bagel. This restaurant has a very welcoming staff and serves quality food.

Best Deli in the Upper West Side

By Robert B |

If you want to experience an amazing, traditional Jewish deli in NYC, there’s no better place than Barney Greengrass, an old style, no frills deli with unbelievably delicious food: everything from pickled herring, to pastrami to wonderful kugel like your Jewish grandmother used to make. Great atmosphere, fabulous food, reasonable prices. So go, already!

A real New York Institution and something you must experience

By 819andreay |

A New York institution. They don’t call call Barney Greengrass “The Sturgeon King” for nothing. The best sturgeon, sable and lox around. Absolutely exceptional. The food is a special treat. The staff is efficient and really knowledgeable. Some restaurants it seems like the staff has never eaten there. Our server Sean was over the top helpful. Cash only… bring plenty. It’s pricey but worth every penny.

Good food, not inexpensive, but warning - cash only.

By lnglgs |

Arrived early-ish on a Sat. morning to eat in. Ask for the side room or they'll try to sit you in the deli area. Was told this is where to go for bagels & lox - & do they have a selection! Now latkes are not on the menu, but make sure you get a plate - so good. The salmon was fresh, my eggs were done just right, & the bagel was very NY. Friend got the platter, & aside from the "sides" I didn't see much size difference. There are other fish available as well. Good server, explained everything well. Biggest complaint - didn't see anywhere that it was cash only. And it's not cheap. We made it work, but a forewarning would have been nice.

Consistently the best food

By Hobar |

Best, freshest lox in the world. Most delicious chopped liver. If I had one complaint, it’s the table seats on the deli side - beware someone’s tushy in your face (yiccch), so avoid those tables like the plague. More intimate in “dining room” anyway.

Barney Greengrass? Barney Classic!

By Jeffrey L |

Holy Moly! What a place -- historic jewish eatery/deli with repeat customers every day. Family-run for decades, and a cool, old-fashioned atmosphere. We enjoyed a late breakfast with delicious eggs, bagels, smoked salmon, cream cheese, and more. The fresh-squeezed orange juice is absolutely delicious and well worth it! Staff was excellent and very informative about everything on the menu, and the history of the place. Highly attentive, as well. Will we go back? Are you kidding me? Heck yes!

Great experience

By Keith J |

It’s been a couple of months now and I’m still thinking about the meal that I had here. Scrambled eggs with onions and smoke salmon. One of my favorite dishes that I’ve ever had in the restaurant. The waiter was great for real professional and interesting. Must have a couple of books in him from all the people he’s met their. Highly recommend

A great NY place

By juliegarfield3 |

The best place to have a great Jewish meal. Wonderful lox and eggs, bagels... rugelah. THE BEST. A great NY classic.

Tourist Trap... Don't fall in...

By Nuffster |

I live around the corner from this restaurant. We eat appetizing frequently and very much enjoy it. This restaurant is an institution -- but if you just want a meal with good, not-overpriced food, this is not the place to find it. Smoked fish is NOT well cut. They get it from Acme in BK just like everyone else. Places in NYC distinguish themselves on how well they cut. Barney Greengrass does a terrible job, leaving in all sort of tough connective tissue and chewy bits -- inexcusable at this price point. The bialys and bagels are... not awful. They are somewhere between ok and bad, and we've tried them at every point in the day: a.m., afternoon, evening. They just aren't fresh or kept in a way that allows them to not become stale. Do what the locals do and please pick up your own ingredients from a good establishment (fish from Murrays in the neighborhood, Russ and Daughters if you're willing to go the distance; bagels are ok from H&H, great from Absolute). What you make at home will be about 12 trillion times better than what BG serves -- and far more enjoyable given that it's minus the wait, minus the grouchy crowds, minutes the stink-eye from wait staff if you take longer than five minutes to eat.

Classic Old School NYC

By Martysfo |

What can you say, primordial atmosphere, brusque service and great food. A totally wonderful slice of NY. We had the nova, sable and whitefish combo and it was delicious.

Delicious comfort food

By Virginia Y |

We crossed Central Park to have a deli lunch on the Upper Westside, and we were not disappointed! The staff were helpful and the pastrami on rye was perfect just as I remembered it many years ago. The meat was a delicious balance of lean and fat and not salty! The cream cheese is served in slabs if you order the smoked fish plate. It was enough for two to share. Loved it!! In my search for a perfect deli lunch in New York I have certainly found it here. Just go! 👏👏👏. It’s an authentic Jewish deli! On Amsterdam between 86 and 87th .

Old NY style

By Brooke T |

Perfect place for a bagel and lox. Not fancy, no frills. Abrupt waiters (it's part of the charm of the place), crowded tables and simple dishes. One of my fav. spots in NYC.

What has happened? Recently very poor.

By webberz |

We’ve been going to Barney Greengrass for 20 years, and until recently loved it. Not anymore. This place is on our no-go list. Any corner bagel store has better and way cheaper whitefish salad. The pickles and herrings are inedible, so salty and rubbery. The sable and salmon are poor. The prices are very high, the food memorably bad. Skip it, go to Russ & Daughters or your corner bagel shop.

an institution

By David P |

Storied place indeed! Five of us for breakfast. Sat in window in side room. Bit cramped but great atmosphere - mix of Upper West Side (well heeled) locals & tourists. Mixed seafood platter & a couple of other dishes + bagels & such. Server was engaging, knowledgeable & knew his stuff. Pricy but worth it for a splurge. Others have said "cash only" but our party was able to pay debit card "guy at counter: "max two - split evenly"). Highly recommended.

Swim with the Fishes

By DR186 |

If not the best then one of the 10 best Jewish style delis in Manhattan. The selection of smoked fishes is very large, and all are very fresh and tasteful. Bagels are good, but the tomatoes are like your Grandma's - big, juicy, taste-filled! Medium sized restaurant with plain seating. There is a good dessert selection.

Seafood at breakfast.

Great pastrami Rueben

By Grant S |

We all wanted to try a pastrami Reuben sandwich so headed to Barney's after a morning exploring. Great service and very charming and authentic place. Reuben was full of pastrami and cheese and very tasty!

Yummy!

By KitaJ2821 |

Watch an episode of Andrew Zimmern where he visited this restaurant. The Nova Scotia Salmon Scrambled with Eggs and Onions looked so delicious and I was determined to try it. Boy was that a great decision! This sandwich was perfect... just the right amount of salmon to eggs, I added cheddar cheddar and had it on a roll which was soft and delicious. The staff was very patient, helpful and friendly. Cant wait to go back to try the pastrami and eggs!

Classic!

By Sherry H |

For lunch on Saturday we only waited 5-10 minutes for a table. Once seated, we were not rushed to order, eat or leave. I had the combo sturgeon/salmon/eggs/onions with bialy and husband had a Reuben. Both were delicious (my bialy was blah, but I had never had one before to compare it to). Husband had iced tea, and our bill was $52. So, it’s not cheap but it is delicious!

This is the real deal for Jewish Food

By Daniel G |

They haven't put a lot of money into the decor. The tables are close together and the chairs are from the 50s. The food is the best you can get if you want lox, nova, sable, sturgeon, bagels, cream cheese, etc. You can also get latkes. The waiters are nice and helpful.

Great Lunch

By Timothy W |

Stopped there for lunch for the first time. I had the smoked whitefish platter, and my wife had the knishes. We both loved what we had, and plan to go there again. The waiter was very good, offering advice on our selections.

Very good smoked fish in classic restaurant on the Westside of NYC

By Joel K |

My wife and I went with friends to this classic smoked fish and Jewish style foods, breads and sweets of all sorts. My wife and I had a smoked fish platter with all the fixings. Veggies and a Bagel and Bialys. Service was good and attentive.

Lox Bagel in a movie set authentic place

By Isabelle-leesveel |

Went here because I saw the place in some movies (You’ve got mail, extremely loud, revolutionary road). Was seated next door where the famous wallpaper is. The deli feels authentic, and although all this movies where filmed here no pretentious at all. I had a cranberry juice and a lox and cream cheese bagel. Bagel was perfect crispy and chewy in the same time. Fresh, good portion salmon and schmear. Only strange thing was tomatoes where quite expensive, but maybe that’s everywhere in NYC. This is definitely a place where I hope to return once and taste other options. PS, leave your tip on the table instead of giving to the cashier.

Memory Munch Time

By MissMem |

My dad had a small "appetizing" counter in the back of his grocery store and he was a "Nova lox surgeon." Barney was called "the sturgeon king." Well the king's place really brought me back in time. It was great food, great service, great coffee. I had the lox, eggs and onions, oh so good. What more could anyone want?!? To clarify the credit card issue, they are accepted during the week but definitely not Sundays. I don't remember what they said about Saturdays.

The discovery of salmon pastrami! A MUST GO!!

By Sara |

I've been there 3 times during my trip to NYC - luckily my hotel was close to the place! Can say with all my heart (and stomach) that here I had the best breakfast ever. The salmon pastrami is mouthwatering just by mentioning it, the bagels were super fresh and tasty, as well for the potato pancakes and I'm sure everything else. If I will ever going back to NYC (really hope so!) I'm going to visit Barney again and again!

Breakfast bagels.

Great breakfast bagels. Good coffee. Excellent service and entertainment provided by David! Seems to be much-loved by locals.

Authentic but priced for tourists

By Maribel F |

Real deal NY bagel with salmon, cream cheese and capers. Our amazing waiter really helped us by recommending latkas (which were really delicious) when my son ordered french fries :) The pastrami was also out of this world. It is the true deli experience, with hefty pricetag, though.

Great NY bagel with salmon breakfast

Super cool place, croudy in a pleasant manner and service with fun and humor! Yes you have to wait; but that is the best sign for a reastaurant to have great good. Yes it is somewhat expensive; but the exprience is a Value! I Will visit again!!

A Little Deli with a Heart

By Ginney55 |

Great place for breakfast, lunch or brunch on the upper west side of Manhattan. Not fancy but great food. On the day after Thanksgiving we had to wait about 20 minutes but it was so worth it. If you have a taste for some traditional deli food this is the place to come to. They have every deli dish you ever wanted but the fish is awesome. They have it all from sturgeon to Gravlox. The bagels are fresh the pickles are crunchy and they even have latkas but they are not on the menu!

New York must do

By Steve B |

We were told to go by a friend and we wanted a authentic New York Deli experience and we certainly got that - incredible sandwiches and lovely knowledgeable staff. I had hot pastrami and she had the Sturgeon sandwich which was fantastic :-) Thank you

Experience Vintage NYC + Quality Smoked Fish

By Joseph M |

This was our first visit. We came for breakfast. I had scrambled eggs with Nova (Nova Scotia Smoked Salmon) mixed in. My wife had Nova, cream cheese, onions, tomato and a bagel. The food was excellent - of the highest quality and flavor. Beyond the food, I loved Barney Greengrass because it connects me to a world almost gone by. It is the world of my grandparents and my parents childhoods, to which I had fading exposure to in the 1960s. I love places like this. So for me, this restaurant is more than a restaurant is a chance to experience the past. The restaurant is crowded. It's loud. It's expensive. It's old and beat up a bit. We spent $45 for breakfast for two. (Not something we do often.) It's cash only. Don't miss it. You should try it at least once. We'll be back (I want my kids to eat here).

How many restaurants are still around that serve these delicacies from our immigrant past? Try it, you'll like it.

Over rated Price for Breakfast

By Meteorrain |

I find the smoke salmon to be average, bagel too hard to eat and scramble eggs was too well cooked. Overall experience, it is not worth travelling so far to do it.

Tough to beat for bagels, salmon, eggs and more

By scarisbrick |

Our daughter took us here for breakfast. Turned out to be brunch. Right sized portions of salmon, and eggs for me. Bagels were, well, bagels done right. Friendly, accomodating, even witty and unobtrusive staff. Pleassnt informal atmosphere. Decent unlimited coffee. Competion is tough around here - and they more than hold their own.

Excellent brunch experience!

By Joshdent |

We had a great experience here! Old school Jewish style fish place (similar to Russ and Daughters but with a more old school vibe than hipster vibe). Doesn’t take reservations but we were lucky to not have to wait for a table on a Saturday morning. Tables are packed in. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Best potato latkes I’ve ever had- make sure to order them! I had a pastrami salmon sandwich and the person I was with had a sturgeon and sable sandwich on a bialy. Everything was so delicious. Expensive yes but I didn’t feel overpriced and we walked away stuffed and happy!

Great breakfast

By Armand B |

Breakfast with wife & daughter; my very first time here; service was prompt; daughter & I had the scrambled eggs, mine with salmon & hers with whitefish; wife had them scrambled together with caramelized onions, and we added the fried potatoes pancakes as well. All was just outstanding! Highly recommended unless you have to have pork sausage, because they don't.

Good breakfast option

By SHFT54 |

Sturgeon king? Oh yeah, the sturgeon is great. We took a ride to the upper west side, skipping our normal stop Russ and Daughters, to dine here specifically for their smoked sturgeon and nova onion scrambled eggs. The sturgeon was fantastic and a lighter option to lox or Nova. The nova scrambled eggs were surprisingly light with delicate flavors, the onions made the dish, and the nova got a bit lost in my mind. The true highlight was the chopped liver we picked up to go. Life altering, though I'll admit I don't have much experience with the dish. I'm not a fan of liver, but their chopped liver was absolutely sublime. No hint of organ flavor or graininess. New Orleans murals around the dining room are old school and service is beyond friendly. I was a tourist, but they treated us like regulars....and the other guests seemed to all be regulars.

Since I was a kid...

By John M |

This is one of those places in NYC that everyone who grew up here knows and goes to. When I was a kid it was either here or Zabar's. It is cramped and a little old school but you cannot argue with the fish and the food. One of my favorite places to eat witha friend.

Classis deli/cash only

By iafamilytravel |

Bustling deli with all round excellent food. We started with an encouraged appetizer of latkes and moved on to a variety of dishes with the divine smoked fish. Pair the good food with the efficient staff who grumble but add to flavor to this classic experience. Only down side was we didn’t realize it was cash only.

Breakfast at historic restaurant

By rlee2000 |

My wife and I stayed on the upper west side this week and decided to stop by Barney Greengrass for breakfast on Friday and we were not disappointed. I had eggs and salmon and my wife had a bagel with salmon and cream cheese. We both enjoyed our meals. The coffee was very good and the service was excellent. Will be back.

Too Established to Care but....

By Ciaran E |

It really depends on what you want from your dining experience. As an establishment that has lasted so long, hasn't moved with the times, is chaotic and rough around the edges is amassing how it's still in business. I agree with all the poor reviews these are more accurate than the more positive ones. It's quality and service is poor for today's standards. I'm glad I went if just to see what 1970 was like but I'd have been happier if I just spent 10min looking in the window. If it closed in the morning there would be an outcry for a week and everyone would move on into 2018 with fond memories. Go if you want to step back in time but expect to pay over the top for it.

A great NY experience

By Adrian M |

The decor is ages old and the tables are on top of each other. This with the lunchtime lines all adds to the atmosphere. My advice is eat early - our 11.45am lunch helped us to beat the crowds. We all enjoyed our dishes with the smoked salmon/white fish everything bagel and blintzes being the biggest hits of the day. Don't go for a quiet or intimate meal but do go for excellent food, the atmosphere, the hard-working but never ruffled waiter and the fun of eating in a real institution.

Breakfast at Barneys

By NC R |

We used to be here almost every Sunday when our children were small. All of our family events including the thanksgiving parade were catered by Barney Greengrass. They have the best bagels in town, yummy appetizers and most of all a family that cares about their customers and will help with anything you need. Normally there is a line waiting for a table. It’s not fancy but it is a famous westside watering hole. I had egg whites with lox and onions but I probably should have had regular eggs. My husband had a bagel and lox. My friend had an omelet that didn’t really look like an omelet , probably because it wasn’t folded in half. Glad we had a chance to say hi to the owner and hang at Barneys. One of the few deli restaurants left in nyc.

Legit NYC bagels and the best smoked fish

I'm a native New Yorker and have been going to Barney Greengrass for decades. First thing: if you go on a weekend, bring cash. It's not inexpensive, but the quailty you get is totally worth it. Their nova lox is smooth and perfectly cured. I'm also a big fan of their sable and will usually order a side in addition to whatever else I get. Get the scallion cream cheese. Their matzoh ball soup is a standard on the upper west side. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything you order, it's all good. Note that the egg dishes are a la carte. You won't get potatoes or anything extra. Their bagels are awesome. Better than Zabar's and what's left of H&H. Go for an everything bagel with whatever you order. Final thought -- we live in SF and NYC and there have been times where Barney Greengrass has been my first and my last meal bookending a commute to NY. Go. Eat.

You Must Come Here

We absolutely loved this place. Great bagels. Black and white cookies to die for. The server recommended the Nova salmon and eggs which was very good; salty though, so be warned on that. We got latkes thrown in for free when the server accidentally spilled our creamer. They were delicious too! My husband and I each sucked down 4 cups of their fresh wonderful coffee. Must return to try the deli sandwiches. This place is not kosher as described above; only “kosher style.” Dairy and meat are mixed. I would come here again in a heartbeat and will likely order online as well.

Very Mediocre and Overpriced

I am Jewish and live in a city with many delis. I am no novice. This place was very underwhelming. You get one half of a very acrid pickle with your order. No bowl or pickle bar unless you want to pay for pickle platter. Sandwiches do not include chips or any other side unless you want to pay for cole slaw ($3). The lox platters come with 3 very thin slices for $16. Included is one bagel, 3 olives, 1 slice of tomato and a little onion. The pastrami sandwich was piled about 1" thick. That is all so meager by Jewish deli standards. Don't plan to share or you will leave starving. I ordered a bialy and it was so dry and tasteless with no onion center to speak of. Sodas come in cans or bottles so no free refills. Latkes were greasy and undercooked- no crispiness at all. Even the apple sauce on the plate was weak. Finally, the spinach knish was huge but absolutely tasteless. It was served with brown mustard which could not hide the blandness. Salt and pepper were no help. I would NEVER go back. The only upside I can think of was that both the hostess and wait staff were pleasant.

Traditional Jewish deli

Eat it there or take it to go, the fish is amazing. Got the whitefish salad and salmon. Might be the best I have ever had of either one! Bagels are delicious too. And don’t miss the rugelach! Of course the atmosphere is nothing special. It’s busy, the tables are nothing fancy, but the servers are efficient and they get you your food fast. If you can get a seat, take advantage of it!

Hard to explain this place. Its a New York institution....terrible decor, strange looking, but very funny career waiters, cash only... NOT cheap. Very authentic, delicious food. The sturgeon king for sure. Amazing smoked fish and pastrami and all the Jewish comfort food you could possibly dream up. They deliver many places and everything tastes great. Only open for breakfast and lunch, there is often a long line especially on weekends. This place is is really the way NY used to be. I hope it lasts forever. I have been here more than 10 times.

WOW

This is a timeless restaurant. I could stay for hours just watching the locals come and eat bagels, salmon&egg breakfasts, pastrami... everything is delicious. Prices are NY-like, but definitely a place to visit.

Get the Latkes

This is the real deal. From the shabby decor to the "King of Sturgeon" stenciled on the front window to the unsmiling but efficient servers, this is an Upper West Side experience. We'd planned on just bagels and coffee, but our server suggested "latkes for the table" - perfect. He didn't have to smile: we did. We ate almost nothing else all day we were so stuffed. Next time: the lox.

Sturgeon/Lox!

By Daniel A |

Wanted to try them out based on seeing them on “Best Thing I ever ate” for the Sturgeon sandwich. Visited on a Saturday mid morning and they were busy. Ordered the Sturgeon, Lox on everything bagel & a Potato Knish. First time having Sturgeon so I can say it tasted as it should (mild smoke flavor). The Lox was tasty and light. They put the right amount of cream cheese (sometimes it’s just too much)-Overall, including the Knish, very good. I ordered takeout & got the Knish warmed & there is an extra charge for that. As other reviews have stated, cash only. Not cheap-$33 for a bagel sandwich and Knish but this is NYC after all. Servers at the counter were friendly.

Delicious, but Frenetic, Pricey and Cash Only

Everything here is delicious. But eating here is semi exhausting: tiny tables in front are too close together, service is brutally efficient but not really conducive to anything but eating fast and going away, or so it feels. That said this place has its fans: families that meet up with several generations (and are lucky enough to get a slightly larger table in the back room), or load up on bakery goodies, fresh bagels & smoked fish for a classic Jewish deli breakfast here or at home. The scrambled eggs with smoked fish is delicious, but if you eat in the squashed front area, it will be served on a small plate, and you'll be lucky if your bagel has butter--expect a cold slab of cream cheese slopping over a plate there's no room for on the table. You may have a perfectly happy and less crazy meal at almost any diner at a more reasonable price and without the Japanese tourist standing up to instagram what---a bagel and lox? But bring cash and try it once, the earlier in the morning on a weekend, the better if you want to sit comfortably in back.

Best Deli in NYC

Best Deli in NYC, best cold Borscht, best atmosphere, No Chichi and pretentious attitude like Russ and Daughters Café, nice waiters, no need to go elsewhere for Deli.

A New York Classic

My usual? Matzo ball soup with noodles -- cheap, filling, delicious, and good for the soul. During the week, they may take your credit cards, but on the weekend it is definitely cash only. Closed Mondays.

Over priced and not worth it...

By Risa A |

This is a local haunt for me, but more recently some of the items I have purchased range from poor to average and so over priced. I am finding less reasons to want to return for the few items that are good, however, it still is very overpriced for what it is.

Authentic and homely experience

Had a really great experience at Barney Greengrass. The service was friendly and attentive, and the selection of bagels and fish was so good. I tried some smoked fish and also latkas which I've never had before. You have to be open to trying new flavours. We got the platter and it was more than enough to share between 4.

Always the BRUNCH favorite

Mouth watering....

One of the 3 best restaurants of this kind. Bagels are super fresh and any of the fish dishes are superb, with excellent fast service and good prices for the area. Quality is 5 stars but lacks a cozy or attractive decor. Basic food but excellent quality.

Great bagels and Lox

Old world deli. Definitely worthy finding before or after visiting Natural History Museum. Kid friendly.

The first breakfast always in NYC

By Paula P |

No matter where in Manhattan I stay I always go to Barney Greengrass for at least one breakfast. The setting is old school. The latkes are the best. Wonderful lox and herring choices. The bagels and bialys are from Kossars so the breakfast is perfect
