Good food, reasonable prices, quiet enough for good conversation

By Markphmnh |

Four of us had a delightful dinner. Good, plentiful, food, good service and the restaurant is so arranged that it is quiet enough to be easily heard. So we had good conversation and a very pleasant time. This would be my first choice next time we're in the area.

Don’t recommend

By sarah lynn |

Bland food and long wait time. I arrived with my friends and first it took 30 minutes for the food to come and it was overpriced and just not worth it whatsoever.

Very good gluten free pasta

By M B |

Had dinner with a friend. It was my first visit and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good service but not rushed. Nice ambience. Good food (I had the gluten free penne pasta). Very reason prices for Manhattan’s Upper West Side. I recommend reservations.

They're back.

After a long hiatus, Bella Luna has now been in its new digs for a few months. The food is still good--not inspired or inspiring, but reliable and very reasonably priced. The service is still friendly and competent. The real loss is the quirky, up-and-down, homey space they were in before. Not their fault; probably chalk another up to landlord greed. But--the corner window is the focal point when people walk toward the restaurant. It is not where you want to see a coatrack. All in all, it is very good to have them back.

Lucky find

By ReeveC |

Was hungry for lunch and found this place. Gnocchi was good in a hearty bolognese. Staff friendly enough and the food came quickly.

Delectable Italian Cuisine

By 2OTRA |

This restaurant was recommended by a resident. The food was delicious. The lobster ravioli and eggplant parmesan were delicious. The lobster ravioli were 5 in number stuffed with lobster and served with a generous amount of rich white cream sauce. The chocolate mousse cake was worth the calories.

Excellent UWS Good Classic Italian Cheap eats! Fantastic service!

By LPNY1 |

My wife and I went here for Valentine's Day because we are buying a house this month and wanted to still celebrate but for less...they had a $20 -3 course pre fixe thats was Excellent! And it seems that they always have that pre fixe menu.Good portions also and the staff was very polite and attentive! left good tip. If we were not moving we would go here all the time. Thank you Bella Luna!!!

Good Location with Good Food

By VacaCouple2014 |

The food is good, service could be improved. Go for the location and close proximity to Theater District

Absolutely delicious

By Drew K |

I came in with my husband and had a delicious meal. Calamari cooked to perfection. Gnocchi was spot on with pesto and I added grilled chicken and had a side of broccoli and a glass of Chardonnay. My spouse had a lamb dish which he loved. We will be back! Thank you for the delicious meal!!!

Brunch

By Susan P |

We had an excellent brunch here on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and I was amazed that there were so few tables occupied. My omelette, which was perfect and came with salad, was a bargain $14. Service was 100% perfect, menu choices were vast, coffee was wonderful, decor (love the benches and the mural, especially) is nice. Go forth and brunch!

Loved it all!

By Cruisingonvacation |

We had a family get together on july4th. We were able to make reservations on the same day for 3. The food, service and ambience were great! We had cheese tortellini which had prosciutto and peas that was perfect....shrimp scampi that had just the right amount of seasoning and the fish special cooked to perfection. A glass of wine and post dinner espresso made it a perfect evening. The wait staff was available but not overbearing. They also did not rush us out the door. We will definitely be back.

Comfy Italian

By gregfucheck |

Food was good food and it had a nice ambiance. Prices were reasonable, for example, most pastas were $13.95. Good location on Columbus Avenue near American Mu6of Natural History.

Pasta could have been better

By Igor Alejandro M |

Nice restaurant, Service avarage nothing that great. Prices ok. The pasta was a disapointment, I really expected better.

Dinner with Friends - fantastic!

By Maria F |

A wonderful Italian restaurant that is reasonably priced and family friendly! Great 3-course prix five option for just $20. Wonderful pasta dishes as well as fish and lamb options. Highly recommend.

First time here!

By Donna T |

We were walking in Central Park and needed someplace for a late lunch. I googled restaurants and Bella Luna came up. I'm so glad it did! The food was delicious and the service was great! I had the bronzini and spinach in butter/lemon sauce. It was delicious! My husband had fettucine alfredo and also loved his. We definitely will be back. Small intimate atmosphere.

Pleasant neighbor restaurant

By SaW43 |

While the Italian food is uninspiring and at times greasy, this is a warm neighborhood spot. The owner and staff are pleasant and caring. Wish the food was better.

Slipping, sadly.

By akamother55 |

Still the solid, generously portioned, reasonably priced food in the new digs. But except for the old stalwarts, Timothy, Tomas, and Tony, the service is down, and the atmosphere has darkened. Hosts and hostesses prowl with Ipads, making note of when you might be freeing up your table, and some of the new staff, when they can be bothered to interact with customers, are decidedly unpleasant. Come on, Bella. We need you back.

Small, loud, small portions - big price

By sendmehome |

I was not impressed with this restaurant at all. It is small and tables are just packed together. It is indredibly loud. We had reservations for 7:30 and were not seated until 8:10. Finding a place to stand and wait is impossible. As most places, everything is ala-carte. I had pasta entree, a tiny portion. This always annoys me as pasta is pretty inexpensive. Then the pasta was just ok. It took our waiter 30 mintues to bring our bill. One nice touch is that they do bring a nice small plate of cookies after dinner. I would not recommend.

Excellent spot!

By Rob G |

Came in and ordered the Pasta Bolognese on the recommendation of the bartender, Matt. It was excellent! Very nice atmosphere as well. Nice location on the corner. Cell phone chargers under the bar were a bonus.

good relaxed meal

By Grumo |

I had salmon with asparagus and potatoes. Very good. My dining companion had a pasta. Decent glass of wine. Lovely setting. Easy going waitstaff. Nice place to spend time. Nothing that makes we want to go back, but an easy place to eat. Total bill: $57.60.

Very disappointing!

By Valachi123 |

Here is exactly what I e-mailed the restaurant 2 days after eating there, asking for their response, but they've yet to reply: I have NEVER written or called a restaurant before to complain about a meal, and do so now with hesitation, certainly doing so before I even think of posting a negative review somewhere online such as on Yelp or Trip Advisor. But I am writing to say how extremely disappointed I was to pay a mere (?) $16.95 for a basic Italian staple--eggplant parmesan and linguine marinara ( if I remember) and find it so completely mushy, soggy and tasteless, as I did this past Sunday night. Maybe it's also because a friend of mine just returned from 10 days of eating on the Adriatic coast of Italy where he was awestruck by the freshness of the fish, vegetables and everything else he ate that it suddenly dawned on me that what I was eating and accepting at your Italian restaurant in the middle of Manhattan was the exact opposite, and I was tolerating it--totally unsatisfying, bland and absolutely without a hint of freshness: in no way special or memorable. But is that what I have come to expect after eating in Manhattan restaurants for over 40 years --that I can look forward to nothing good for "just" $17 an entree? Maybe that's the sad truth--and places like yours might be proof of that. The 2 friends who brought us to Bella Luna are n'hood regulars at your place and love it there, and my wife also liked her salmon entree dish very much, but I was totally disappointed by my mushy, overcooked, un-fresh meal, and felt the need to tell you so here, even though I also enjoyed the authentically warm appeal of your wait staff and the restaurant's general ambiance. Thank you for listening...and for improving what you do! For starters, we'll see how you respond to this feedback.

Amazing

By Elaine G |

Terrific, reliable, family friendly. I love the 3 course meal for $19.95 The waiters are very attentive.

Nice restaurant, food was good, service okay - no complaints.

Friday night : busy so service not the greatest but was okay. Food was good - no complaints would come back again.

Awful Food: Good Staff

By pkgreen2018 |

I remember when Bella Luna opened at its original location on Columbus Ave. It was wonderful and had a spread of fresh antipasti near the entrance. Tonight, I ventured back to their current location a bit further down Columbus Ave. This is NOT the italian restaurant that I remember. The minestrone would make my grandmother gag. It was bland and not prepared correctly. I then ordered the Pollo Picatta. What arrived at the table were 3 thin slices of over-cooked (dry) chicken, too many capers and a sauce that was overwhelming with lemon -- they charge $19.00 for this entree. Worst of all was the side dish of pasta that I received with this mushy and over-cooked rigatoni from a box! They obviously don't understand what 'al dente' means in the kitchen? I'd rather pay a little more for pasta that is made in-house. While the room is attractive with a faux rustic decor, I realized why this restaurant is so popular -- it's jam packed with locals from the Upper West Side -- families who want bland food and are willing to pay for it regardless of cost or quality. The only thing on point was the staff but I wanted a good meal not just a friendly server. Never again.

great food, great ambiance, great prices!

By uncleal60703 |

The three course prix fixe is under $20 and for $5.00 more you get a glass of excellent wine. And for $5,00 more you can have any entree on the menu. This is italian food that is as good as it gets..Plus you can hear yourself talk as the thick carpets and the widely serparated tables make for easy conservation. The service is first rate as the busboys are constantly refilling your bread dish and your water glass. Go on a night when live music is featured at no extra cost.

good for take away

By MelbourneDes |

we used this for a quick takeaway. very good. but we were very hungry. delivery was quick we enjoyed the pasta

Inconsistent food bad service

By TinaTJ2013 |

I have ordered delivery from this place couple of times. Their chicken marsala the first two times was so good that I ordered it for the third time and my boyfriend ordered fried calamari. This time when it arrived the calamari was so stinky it was unappetizing the moment he opened the plastic container the fishy smell filled the apartment. My marsala sauce was a tasteless running water nothing like what I had the previous two times. I called the manager David and he said when the food travels for delivery the consistency of the food changes. I was so offended by this response. His tone was very condescending and I said do you mean to tell me that during the two blocks travel my marsala sauce turned into a liquid and the calamari went bad? He said that I'm trying to pick a fight with him and he will not stand for it and hung up on me!!! I could not believe it, I called back and he hung up on me as soon as he heard my voice. Never ever ordering from this place again!

Wonderful restaurant, wonderful ambiance, incredible food!

By GeorgiaGirl40 |

I took my 9-year-old son to NYC for a quick vacation and wanted him to experience real Italian food (not Olive Garden or Carrabba's). This neighborhood place was recommended by a friend, and it turned out to be the culinary jewel of the trip. The service was beyond flawless: the waitstaff arrived at our table with water, fresh bread, olive oil and spices within 30 seconds of us sitting down. We didn't even have our coats off yet. Our water glasses never dipped below half-full. The food arrived in about 15 minutes and was, in a word, spectacular. Fresh pasta, delicious marinara sauce, amazing cheeses ... it was the best Italian I've ever eaten. My son had linguine with homemade meatballs and thought he was in food heaven. He was amazed by the herbs in the marinara and relished every bite of meatball. The owner/manager stopped by our table twice to see how things were. His manner was perfunctory in the least: he leaned in, truly wanting to know how everything tasted and if we were happy. He greeted us at the door when we arrived, sat us and wished us good evening when we left - all with a charming Italian accent. I had my 9-year-old son with me - but he knows how to behave in a nice restaurant. I wouldn't take a younger/loud/active child there because I wouldn't want to ruin the atmosphere for other diners. Whatever effort it takes, go to Bella Luna. You'll be so happy you did.

Something for everyone..

By Brigantinebeach_bum |

Reliable locals place with a reasonably priced range of options. Great spot for friends gathering: fish, meat, gluten free or vegetarian there is something there for everyone. Tonight I had them add medium rare salmon to one of their standard salads. Delicious.

Bella-Luna

Food and service was great! Our table was ready when we arrived for our reservation. I just love their meat sauce!!! Nice wine selection!

Great Neighborhood Italian Restaurant

By Stephen S |

Delicious food, friendly; professional staff, reasonable prices. Try the three course prix-fixe menu: It's a real value. Highly recommended.

New Location, even better!!

By S5387GVsarahb |

This restaurant has been a staple on the upper Westside for years. After being closed for renovations for a while, they reopened a block down. The new renovations are beautiful and the place is airy and intimate at the same time. They have added a brick oven for homemade pizza, which really added to their already nice menu. Also, their new grilled chicken salad with fried mushrooms is yummy and generous. With a steady list of $12.00 pasta entrees, this place remains a well frequented local fave!!

Neigbourhood Italian. Good for family

By 69tiger888 |

Took our grandkids here ( 8 and 6) as they lived close by. Decor and service ok. We sat inside. Vegetable soup good .We shared pasta , ravioli , ragatoni with meat sauce and linguine with Vongole , portion good and all taste fine. Tiramusi good. Fun to take fmily here as very informal

Neighborhood Delight

By keithofrpi |

The Italian food is very well prepared, if standard. We had a really delicious serving of mussels in a tomato broth, but the next day my wife had a disappointing serving of the same dish. Still, the service is friendly, the prices are reasonable, and all the dishes are usually quite good. It's deservedly popular.

Old Standby

By Jeremy T |

I eat here every once in a while with friends who live around the corner. Good simple Italian fare. Decent wine selection, good deserts, and Cappuccino. In the warmer weather you can eat outside.

below average lunch

By lev315 |

It's not fair to judge a restaurant based on two dishes. All I can say is the lunch prix fixe was below average as was the lunch pasta. The calamari was typical breaded deep fried, the marinara was worse than average from a bottle. The pasta entrees were uninspiring and barely adequate. The service was very good, the manager very friendly.

Great food

By ElectronBlue79 |

Bella Luna was a couple of blocks from our hotel so we decided to check it out on our first night in New York. The food was fantastic, reasonably priced and the service was fast and friendly. Great for people watching too!

Good food, nice place

By MellynNYC |

I have been coming to Bella Luna for years. The first time was on a date before I met my husband (we are about to have our 20th anniversary). The food is always delicious and the place itself is lovely. Last night my husband and I went there for dinner. He had the striped bass with spinach special and I had the tagliatelle bolognese. Both were delicious and we finished every bite. Good, reliable neighborhood restaurant with decent prices.

Don't order cappuccino!

By JPBary001 |

The kitchen here is above average for the area, but be prepared for some lapses in service. Our waiter was pleasant, but didn't take responsibility for our order. He did admit bringing out the wrong order, but somehow the kitchen was responsible for the mistake. We had to ask three times for the capuccino. He kept saying that the poor overworked busboy was bringing it. Finally, we asked for the check and had to place bets on whether the check or the cappuccino would arrive first. Turns out, we had to go looking for the check, sans cappuccino. The food isn't bad, just make sure you have time for a very relaxed idea of service.

You get what you pay for

By Joshua S |

Food is plentiful and inexpensive but soggy and mediocre quality. No wonder it was not crowded on a Saturday night.

Holiday Meet Up

By David B |

Sat outside at one of the small tables, we shared beef carpaccio and calamari. Beef was great while calamari needed help, all rings no bodies and no real taste to it. Great service and the food did come out quick like other mentionable reviews. One could brought their dog inside and actually sat on one of the chairs. Hmmmm!!!

Great spot great food

By Christopher C |

Had an appointment in the neighborhood so we stopped for lunch. We both had salads with grilled chicken that were great! The chicken was really tasty. Service was a tad slow but we were not in a big hurry so it was all good. Had a great seat by the window where we talked business and watched the world go by. Would certainly come back.

Hidden Treasure

By Tessa W |

We stumbled in after a 10 mile walk around Central Park for a late lunch. The pre-fixe lunch menu was such a bargain! We had the penne with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella and the linguine with tomato-basil sauce and meatballs. It was well made, generous portions, and such an unexpected delight. The store front is fairly forgettable but the food is not! It's now on our favorites list.

good food and good music

By BartandLinda |

Tuesday night is a real treat - enjoying good food and listening to the best jazz guitarists anywhere.

Prix Fixe

By George E |

Really good place to go to between lunch time and dinner time. Good to Very good food and good service !

Sad decline

By StephenR295 |

A friendly neighborhood Italian. Solid but unimaginative menu. In recent months linen napkins and tablecloths were replaced by paper- obvious cost saving measure. The food seems more heavily salted and service erratic with too few waiters trying to handle the customers. I regret to have to be so critical because I like and have enjoyed the restaurant over the years and they have excellent jazz guitarist on Tuesdays.

Always Consistently Good

By Boomer R |

Great service, good food at reasonable prices. How can you beat that? Wine specials on Fridays along with great pasta dishes for under $15.00. For NYC that is rare.

Food Good...Service Poor

By JanisNYC |

They do have a good three course special for $19.95. The appetizer I had was fried calamari, plentiful, not greasy. The pasta,Capellini Alla Campagnola, was dry and nothing special. My husband had the Rigatoni Alla Norcina which he said was good. The house wines are good, and inexpensive. Unfortunately one of the waiters spilled a glass of wine down my husband's back. It happened when another waiter bumped into him, so it wasn't his fault. What WAS his fault was the fact that he just dumped a bunch on napkins on the table and walked away. We were left to clean up his mess. The manager came by and offered us dessert on him (it already came with the meal) so instead bought us each a glass of wine, and offered to pay the cleaning bill. It was not so much the wine being spilled down my husband's back and jacket, but that the wait staff, more than one, was so callous to a customer with their actions. Or lack of actions.

Good Neighborhood Casual Italian

By MBones7 |

Nice spot for a casual meal on the Upper West Side. Went with the family for a late lunch/early dinner after a visit to the Museum of Natural History. It's worth the extra few blocks walk than the options in the immediate area of the museum. Menu is traditional Italian standards and everyone enjoyed their food. Really good Chicken Parm and pizza in particular. Prices were very reasonable and wine list was very affordable. Waiters were very friendly and patient with the kids. Enjoyable meal made for a nice end to the day.

Bella Luna

By alexisgrullon |

The food taste truly amazing and homemade. They offer a set price menu which is good choices and price is very good. Customer service is great and sitting is offered inside and outside weather permitting.

I like this restaurant

By Rean R |

I lile this restaurant. They are pretty decent and delicious too. I like their set-up and their outside seating. Their service is good and with good variety of wine. Check out their menu, I posted it. Enjoy!

Delicious, appropriate portions, great service

By Rocketscientist3 |

So there are over 12000 restaurants in nyc.....how do u pick? In the area, TripAdvisor reviews pretty good, but it is better than what I read. Great service, attended to gluten and garlic issues with no problem. Prices reasonable and portions were appropriate. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Marvelous Meal

By Barry P |

We came here by crosstown bus after visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Great choice for Italian food! I had fettuccine primavera and my wife had linguini with white clams. Both were excellent. Our dessert was tiramisu, and it was fantastic. The only problem was the minestrone soup, which was filled with mushy vegetables. This restaurant is a good find, and we will be happy to come back.

Surprising find!

By Julie A |

I live in NYC and booked a dinner here on Saturday night. It was surprisingly good! We were concerned about the feel of the place, a little sketchy, but the food was excellent and very inexpensive. Great service not particularly refined but friendly. I am impressed!

Great spot conveniently licated

By Phyllis K |

Met friends from various parts of the city here because if it's convenient proximity to public transportation. The service was great and the food was wonderful. The shrimp scampi with linguini was delicious and the two appetizers of meatballs and bruschetta were great as was the caprese salad. There is also a full bar and they offer outside seating. They are currently getting ready to move to a new location so we will be anxiously awaiting their new location.

Under-priced and Really Good!

By B-radLV |

There are several pastas priced at just $10 which made me worry that it might not be very good. But when the food arrived, we were in for a very pleasant surprise! My tagliatelle with bolognese was delicious, as was the calamari. Incredible value for NY. Next time in NYC we'll come back in a heart beat!

Upper West Side Treasure

By ItalyLovers4Ever_10 |

A group of 6 ate dinner recently and it was quite good and a very pleasant experience. The food was delicious, plentiful, & nicely presented (no ice cold salads here); staff was efficient and very attentive - we had an unfortunate 'spill the wine glass' incident and not only was the mess cleaned up instantly and the table re-set like we just sat down, but David (the manager?) quickly brought over a replacement glass of wine, and at the end of the dinner kindly brought us some delicious limoncello. Some of us ordered from the prix fixe, which is a great value, and I suggest that a couple could have one order the prix fixe, and the other a la carte, if desirable, because the appetizer and dessert on the prix fixe is enough for two. This place has been on the UWS for a while, and deserves to be frequented as often as possible.

Upper West Side Favorite

By martonewyork |

Good meals, fresh, and good value. Avoid the wine or don't expect it to be as good as food and bread! Had their pasta specials, but look forward to their fish/meat specials are always fresh and filling. Dave is great maitre'd--friendly waiters and a good favorite nearby home.

Nice venue but not very good food

By richardallan2016 |

Went to dinner after the movies with grandson #4 (he's 15) and my wife. Interesting menu of pastas and we ordered three different types and sauce. Before you could say "hello" the plates arrived. How could they make the dishes so fast in a restaurant 3/4 filled? My grandson, face down, finished his plate. Mine with the lamb ragu tasted like little balls of sand in a wet pasta. My wife's had a strange taste and barely had two spoons full. I tasted it and said: "no thank you." Check please.

BRAVO!

By NYTrendies |

Having a neighborhood Italian restaurant with consistently good food at very reasonable prices is always an asset. But when this restaurant offers service and customer attention that equals the finer dining spots in Manhattan, it is cause for accolades. We have been there with various groups of friends at least 3-4 times during March and April, 2013. During one of those visits, when one of our group of 6 overturned his glass of red wine, the wait staff managed to wipe up the spill, change the table covering, bring fresh napkins, club soda to erase the stain on his clothes and a new glass of wine...all within 3 minutes. It was quite remarkable. And, at the end of the meal, the manager, David, even sent a complimentary after dinner drink to the table. Bella Luna's prix-fixe menu is a bargain. The size of the salads and pastas is generous and all of the food is well-seasoned and tasty. If you want a "buona notte", try Bella Luna.

Recomended dish: capellini alla campagnola

By danieller373 |

Perfect and delicate dish !!!!good service - everyone is very nice .......beautiful and clean place :) recommended !!

Great good at great prices

By Ian H |

We found the restaurant online and decided to take a chance. Well all I can say is, I'm glad I didn't read the recent reviews on TripAdvisor first, as I would probably have gone elsewhere. Thankfully, the food was good, the service was attentive and the wine reasonably priced. All in all, it was a nice meal and I'd certainly recommend it to you.

Good bet Italian restaurant away from tourists

By Traveling_Vicki |

Enjoyed this place because the food was solid, and the staff attentive. Came here with my daughter one evening during a weekend stay in NYC. It was nice to depart the madding crowd of Times Square/Columbus Circle, and find this cozy neighborhood place. Food was not terribly imaginative, but satisfying. Had the ravioli with tomato sauce, daughter has the penne a la vodka. Both were good, not the best ever, but hit the spot.

Popular UWS Italian

Bella Luna on Columbus and 88th is a casual but elegant bustling Italian restaurant. The food is solidly good and the service is excellent.

Amazing service

By Jeff |

I would say it is too notch . But the employee need some more experience. But they will get there in no time ... I believe.

Great food, service and ambience, what more can you ask for?

By Alfredo D |

I have been going to Bella Luna for many years and I have never been disappointed. Excellent food, excellent service and a quiet ambience suitable for a business meeting or a romantic dinner. Prices are decent for great Italian food and service, I highly recommend them.

Great service

By AlyssandLily |

This restaurant is so cute and the food was great. Our waiter was very nice and helpful with food and wine choices. I would definitely eat here again.

New Years Eve

By Santa101 |

We went to dinner at the Bella Luna on New Years eve, the food and service was excellent. We all had 3 courses - the girls started off with Calarmari followed by sausage pasta/ravioli, I had the calarmari and the chicken in masala and my wife the bruscetta followed by veal. The food was excellent, very well cooked. The waitress was very helpful with her recommendations as well as knowledge of the wine. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and would recommend.

Solid Italian

Managed to get an early table. Perfect for large family group - plenty of choices. Friendly service.

NYC GTG

By Karen S |

A group of about 2 dozen met for lunch, everyone enjoyed their choice. Food and service very good, can eat al fresco weather permitting. Had a little problem, the lovely hostess made some phonecalls trying to help me. Waitstaff friendly and professional. Looking forward to returning. Be aware there are 2 prix fixe luncheon menus, both good value. The wine was very good also.

The Charm of Italy in NYC

By Kathy K |

While visiting NYC in mid October, friends took us to this quaint little Italian Restaurant off the busy streets of Manhattan. I'd just happened to be in Italy at the same time these friends were there, so all of us had huge expectations for a wonderful meal. We were NOT disappointed. To start with the restaurant was warm and inviting and the staff was the same . . . inviting us in, tucking us away in a quiet little corner (I think they read our minds as we walked in, because they took us just where we wanted to be). To start with, the bread was divine, the wine was good, and the service was impeccable. I was the only one who ordered a salad - sad for the rest of them as they missed out on a wonderful Caesar Salad. The Capellini Alla Campagnolae was rich and delicious. One friend had Lamb Pappardelle and she couldn't stop talking about it all evening. Bella Luna should be a destination when traveling to New York and dreaming of Italy.

Perfect italian setting!

great menu and great staff! we both loved what we ate and loved sitting outdoors

excellent neighborhood Italian restaurant

By 943rons |

This is a great neighborhood Italian restaurant, with excellent salads, pasta, fish, and pizza (a new addition since they relocated). Service is pleasant, and prices are reasonable. One of our go to Italian restaurants.

Disappointing atmosphere, Food mediocre.

By Chanel1102 |

Went here on my first trip to NYC. My friend & I were all dressed up to go out & we arrived here & felt extremely out of place in this place. Very cheap looking, food was mediocre at best, wouldn't go back.

Nice atmosphere - disappointing food and only serves wine

By Rachel S |

We recently celebrated my daughter's birthday at Bella Luna. Based on reviews I had read I expected it to be wonderful and the food was okay but very average - we were a party of four and everyone felt that way. I had grilled salmon, my daughter had pizza and the other two people with us had pasta dishes. It was also disappointing not to be able to have cocktails. We hadn't realized they only served wine. Maybe it was an off night but I would not go back.

Amazing food, amazing restaurant - good date spot!

By jsaiml |

We were early for our reservation but they were still able to seat us right away. The atmosphere is to die for! Its a perfect date spot, with awesome, romantic decor for an affordable price - especially in new york city! They have a daily wine special so you can even treat yourself to a glass of wine or two on a budget. The food was delicious, the pesto gnocchi is to DIE for! I only have good things to say about Bella Luna, I will definitely be back!

Bella Luna

By Hmk63 |

Good food, families welcome, casual setting. Feels well worn and familiar even though it was our first visit.

A solid local Italian

By rb_ldn |

The food at Bella Luna is solid Italian with the usual New York slant. The service was very friendly though a little chaotic - we seemed to be covered by 2 waiters who didn't communicate with each other. We ate outside as it was a lovely evening.

Okay, but not great

By tkotnour |

The were very accomodating to find a table on the window, even tho we had no reservations. The sauvignon blanc and proseco were great. The ceasar salad was one of the better ones i have had lately. That said, the Tri-Color Tortellini was pretty blah...I'll have to garlic up the leftovers to add some flavor to it. Expected more for $16.95

Great pasta

By Renee S |

Love this location. Great to sit outside and enjoy your meal and people watch on Columbus. The pasta we ordered was very good. If you like eggplant definitely order the eggplant pasta. Very reasonably priced for New York City.

Wonderful Value and Diverse Choices for Brunch

By aplutzer |

A perfect spot for brunch dining after a meditation session on the upper west side. I use a walker and any place that take special steps to accommodate me is most welcome. The food was quite interesting and there were many choices - pizza, pasta, salads, eggs and omelets to choose from.

Good value, but food just Ok

By Jim M |

I am so surprised to see people absolutely raving about the food here. The pix-fixe menu was a good value for Manhattan, but there was nothing special about the food. The calamari (the seafood itself, the breading, and the sauce) was extremely boring and my chicken Parmesan was just OK. It wasn't objectionable, it just wasn't memorable. The marinara sauce is so unimaginitive, so "straight from the jar" it is unbelievable people are giving this place five stars. The atmosphere in the dining room was nice, and the outside eating area was pleasant.

Impressive

By Frank L |

Last evening after work, my co-workers and i were looking for a relaxed place to unwind and have a nice dinner. As out of towners, we took a chance on Bella Luna restaurant on NY's upper west side. We were very pleased with the atmosphere, food, and service. Knew nothing about the place until we walked past it from the office to hotel, and it seemed interesting. Full range of Italian dishes, and seafood specials. we got there at 5:30 p.m., and by the time we were leaving the place was almost full. so obviously the locals enjoy it too! would highly recommend!

Delicious!

Had food delivered. The best Italian I've ever had. From the meat sauce, to the sausage, tiramisu and their gelato...oh my...so freaking good. Highly recommended!

Great Neighborhood Italian

We're so delighted that Bella Luna has reopened in its new location. Wonderful neighborhood Italian. Good food at reasonable prices in a modern new setting. And the service is terrific.

Great Food Horrible Service!

By Waltra L |

After passing this restaurant several times we decided to check it out. When we approached the restaurant there were 3 waiters standing there who never greeted us. We should have turned around at that point but decided against it. I ordered the lobster ravioli which was awesome. My friend had the Capellini Alla Campagnola which was served with a big lump of goat cheese in the middle. She found it very boring and tasteless. All the tables around us were served bread which would have been a great accompaniment but none was offered. After our meal was served the waiter did not even inquiry whether we required anything further. We were only asked after we had requested our check from the busboy. We normally tip well but did not leave one for this waiter as we've never had such horrible service.

Pizza, calzones... all right off of Times Square

By Katlyn B |

We found this as we were desperately looking for a pizza place near Times Square. We didn't want to spend an arm and a leg, and though Bella Luna was a little more than we had hoped, it was pretty good. Nothing especially unique or sensational about the food, but the slow-cooked meat sauce (with the spaghetti) was impressive. The calzones were good. We ate at the bar (looking onto the sidewalk/side street) and ordered at the counter, but there were nicer full-service tables in the rest of the restaurant.

Very Good Food

By 631X |

My wife and I stopped here while walking on Columbus St on the Upper West Side. The food was very tasty. Very good pasta. Service was a little slow, but friendly.

We ate there anyway.

By NAR |

The food is OK for a local, neighborhood Italian restaurant. There shouldn't be 'soup' at the bottom of a pasta dish with clams, but the waiter didn't object to my leaving it in the bowl. However, the welcome we got when we entered was unpleasant, and we had the same experience at this place in the past. We were asked if we had made a reservation, and we hadn't. Normal occurrence in such restaurants. Plenty of tables, so no problem. But both the man and woman who greeted and seated us were unpleasant enough that if there was a similar place nearby, we would have walked out. But we ate there anyway.

Good Italian food. Excellent service.

By TorontoMusicman |

We visited this restaurant with a friend that lives in the area and recommended this restaurant. We were not disappointed. We had the assorted appetizer plate to start which was quite good. For mains we had lamb shanks and ravioli, both were excellent. The pistachio gelato was wonderful. Not so much the home made tiramisu cake.

Bland uninspired food

By TorontoMusicman |

The restaurant has quite a nice setting and is relatively quiet so you can carry a conversation. Unfortunately the food is far from great. The chicken salad was some greens with a bland piece of grilled chicken. The Branzini fish was bland and swimming in some liquid as if it was boiled in it. The cheese cake was tasteless. The service was not bad but that could barely redeem the meal.

very good, very nice, very charming and very pleasant team!!!!

By mikadoParis |

In a very pleasant distric, and close to Central Park, this italian restaurant provides a very very good food!! all the dishes and desserts on the menu are attractive and when you see the plates coming from the kitchen, you're just amazed! colors, quantities, smell, everything is nice!! and when you eat....it'sv just a great time!!!

Moved and may get better

By robcurtross |

I stopped by 22017 Bella Luna's new digs this afternoon in part to see if the food has gotten any better. Tried an old favorite -- meatball hero -- which was ok, good solid food at a reasonable price. Friendly service, and acceptable cleanliness. Key reason for coming, though, was to see the painted panel that was discovered during renovation -- see my photos for this discovery.

A Solid Very Food to Excellent Rating!

By Richard S |

The atmosphere and service are both very good; no negative here. The wine selection is outstanding and*Very Reasonably Priced* The food at our table was either very good of excellent. The prices were on the low side. Recommendation: Try it, you will *probably* enjoy it!

Nice neighborhood place for Italian food

By Ron K |

Went here with a couple of friends who'd been there often. Appetizers were very good, the caprese was very fresh and the bruschetta was a very nice order. We weren't rushed, we were there on a weeknight, and the waiter was very accommodating and helpful in choosing a wine. The wine list isn't extensive, but it isn't expensive either! I was somewhat disappointed in the eggplant parmigiana I had. It wasn't layered, it was two pieces of breaded and fried eggplant under sauce and cheese. Everyone else was happy with their meals. My wife's chicken marsala was tasty and my friend's pasta in pesto sauce with shrimp looked very good. Overall this place is definitely worth another try. Not very long on ambience, a nice neighborhood place, The tables are rather close to each other, i felt a little packed in as our table was in the middle of several others.

Nice for quick lunch.

By Jake S |

We dropped in about 2 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon. My wife and I had salads. I enjoyed a chicken salad with crisped wild mushrooms and arugula. My wife had Sicilian salad. Both were good, but my chicken salad was exceptionally good. Good service, nice surroundings, we were immediately seated. Nice bread.

Good family restaurant

By KiheiSands |

Food was average Italian, the wait staff was very friendly. Located in little Italy the atmosphere was very much like an Italian family style restaurant. Nothing stood out for me but I did enjoy the meal. I think the prices were average.

Nice discovery

By Joseph W |

Tripadvisor reviews found this restaurant for us, and we by chance were there on Wednesday night, when bottled wines were half off. That immediately raised my spirits, but so did their special of red snapper, baked in vegetables. The portion was generous and the fish could not have been fresher or tastier.Their "Mezza," or mixed vegetable and mozzarella appetizer was good, but the cheese could have been more abundant and fresher.

Nice Food

By ekaall |

Good buzz in the restaurant. Warm and friendly service. Food was nice, typical fare, hot and good portion size.

Excellent Local Restaurant

By Gary G |

This gem is a great upper westside Italian restaurant. The food is consistently good and the service is friendly and great.

Order the Specials

By EmilyJane83 |

Bella Luna has a nice atmosphere and a myriad of choices. However, try to order from the specials of the day as they tend to be better. I had a delicious ravioli with mushrooms, walnuts, and sun-dried tomatoes. My mother ordered a seafood pasta from the regular menu, and it was enormous and tough. The specials are fresher, tastier, and actually less expensive.

Neighborhood gem: fabulous food, great service at reasonable prices

By Julie S |

After spending five days in Venice, Bella Luna was the first restaurant we visited upon returning to NY, in order to have a fabulous Italian meal. (Venice is the only city in Italy known for lousy food.) People who live nearby love this restaurant for its great Italian food and affordable prices, and many eat there several times a week. Lucky them! Try the lamb pappardelle, penne a la vodka, grilled salmon, any chicken dish. Salads are fresh and beautifully presented. Service excellent. And they deliver. Much better food and value than nearby Carmine's, and the restaurant is more intimate and quieter.

Nice menu and decent quality Italian food at good prices. Pasta is good, sauce ok, desert selection good.

Casual, affordable and good food

By MarkKauf |

We had our first dinner here and were pleased with the food, ambience and service. The mixed green salad was large enough for two people to share. My wife had eggplant parm and I had ravioli. Both dishes were tasty. We'll be back again while we are in NYC.

Fresh tasty lunch

Came here at lunchtime with friends and children while on holiday. Good range of menu to suit all. Food was fresh and tasty, service was prompt and courteous. Would definitely return

Excellent neighborhood Italian place

By BenjyP1234 |

Food usually very good, though not fancy, nice ambiance, good service. A reliable choice for dinner when you're in the area. I've eaten there perhaps ten times and only once was less than fully satisfied. It can be crowded for dinner, but that's because it's a good value.

Excellent food and atmosphere

I went to law school in Rome, so I extremely critical with italian food..from the color of the olive oil to the texture of the pasta..this was the real deal!

Good Italian fare with lovely ambiance

By Rheinland-Cleveland |

Had dinner there with my 12 year old who ordered mussels for an appetizer. Excellent. She had bolognese and i had a pasta with white clam sause. All excellent with fresh ingredients. Service was a bit absent-minded and took way too long between starter and main dish, especially since it was not busy at all. Still, i recommend for tasty dishes and a rustic, cozy interior. The open red wine was also very good.

Great food, Great Service!

By islandgetawaygirl |

Our first time here as we do not live in the area and we found this place online before we left for NYC. I made reservations right online and when we arrived, it was ready with a table by the window. The food was excellent from appetizer to dessert! The Gelato was amazing and tasted just like the gelato I had in Italy. I had ravioli with goat cheese (it was a special) and it was amazing! My husband had a fish which was a special too. We both cleared our plates and were very impressed. The waiter we had was very attentive and also even helped us with directions and answered questions, etc. We were very impressed and would definitely come back to this restaurant when we are back in NYC. Also, we had mentioned just in conversation that it was my birthday and the waiter put a candle in my gelato. How nice! We had a 6:30 reservation and seemed to be one of just 3 tables full but as we were leaving, more people had come in. Great experience!!

Excellent service, good price

By catlin24 |

Very comfortable place, the food was excellent and the wine list was half price on this evening. Prix fixe menu was a very good deal. Room was more than half full and the sound level was fine. We will return next time we visit the city.

Bella rapporto!

By SeattleSojourner_12 |

Based on the Tripadvisor reviews we had dinner here and were very glad we did. There were many menu choices and the food was very good. The prix fixe option was a great value, especially for Manhattan-- for 3 courses at only $19.95. Moreover, you can substitute any entree on the menu for those on the prix fixe for only $5 extra. The calamari appetizer, lamb bolognese main dish a nd chocolate gelato were all very goo. Dining companions had veal piccata with pasta and shrimp pesto pasta. The $25 bottles of wine are also very good value. The waitstaff were good and the house manager checked in on how the meal was, This was clearly the best value meal we had during a 5 day trip to New York. There were also several families with young children there who seemed to be enjoying their dinners. And it was quiet enough to have a conversation!

Great food in a great location

By David S |

Our first time at Bella Luna. Great food, a pretty location, and not very expensive. This is what a neighborhood restaurant should be like. Friendly service as well. Oh, and good bread!

Reliable neighborhood spot

By Daniel R |

My wife and I were looking for a simple modestly priced "Italian " night out and found it at Bella Luna, located on Columbus Ave and 88th Street in New York's UWS. In the past couple of years most neighborhood restaurants have raised their prices to the $25-30 range for simple entrees and appetizers to $12-15. Not at Bella Luna though which has many pasta dishes in the $12-16 range and other entrees in the low $20s. service is fast and attentive. I had a great Caesar salad which was enough to share and their eggplant Parm which was delicious but only enough for one with no left overs 😰. The red sauce was really delicious, bright tomato flavor not overwhelmed with spices. My wife's gnocci in pesto was not quite up to our tastes, a bit too leaden. The retaurant also offers several pasta dishes with several appetizers and ice cream desserts for $19.95' remarkable for the location. The restaurant was also very quiet--low noise levels, unusual these days.

Friendly service, tasty food

By Avigal |

After a long walk from 44th St, we were ready to sit and enjoy people-watching. We wandered into Bella Luna, which was full. The hostess was super easy-going, told us it would just be a couple of minutes, so we waited. She was right, we were seated quickly and shared a tasty veggie pizza and salad with grilled shrimp. A couple of glasses of Malbec (for me) rounded out a terrific meal. The restaurant was crowded, but most people appeared to be from the neighbourhood - a mom and daughter sharing a dessert, friends laughing over wine. Really comfy atmosphere.

Busy neighborhood Italian restaurant

By JBJC4 |

Had lunch there with a friend. I had a salad with added shrimp which were perfectly prepared and cooked. My friend had pasta which she said was good. Pleasant waiters.

Very decent neighborhood restaurant

By eeschiff |

I have been eating at Bella Luna for twenty years (it is three blocks from my apartment) and it is always consistent. It is a very nice place, with tablecloths, a good atmosphere and very good service. It is not too noisy and it is very clean and comfortable. It is never crowded, and you can almost always get a reservation at the last second. (I once even got a reservation for Valentine's Day -- the most impossible day in NYC to get a reservation -- just a few hours ahead.) The food is good but not great -- nothing special, but always good and consistent. Lots of different pastas, nice salads, but nothing really spectacular. But it is nice to have a neighborhood place you can rely on, that has good food and excellent service with a pleasant atmosphere, and where you can always get a table!!

Pleasant Evening w/great Food

By David S |

We discovered Bella Luna while walking on Columbus. Checked out reviews on Trip Advisor and noted many 5 stars, so we walked in without a reservation. The greeter was especially nice and luckily we got the last two top Our waiter Jaime was very nice. One of us is Gluten free so we had several questions. The appetizer we shared was an assortment of olives, eggplant, peppers, canali beans and artichoke hearts. Very tasty and served two at a total of $12.95. We had the shrimp scampi, one with linguini and the other mixed veggies. Both excellent. Very friendly bus persons. It's so nice to see smiles on their faces. Check out Bella Luna and you will not be disappointed.

casual itailian

By Jeremy T |

We eat here with friends quite often. wWe go back not only for the good reasonably dishes. but for the atmosphere. One can really relax here, they never rush you. The wine list is good. Even their house wines are good. I like the shrimp marinara over linguini. Tasty. The hostess always keeps an eye on everyone to make sure all are well taken care of'. I think I will eat there tonight. Jeremy T

Now re-done

By Jeremy T |

Bella Luna moved across the street. The new location has a large dining area as well as a bar. I started with a Caesar salad which was quite generous. From my entrée I had the Bronzino Which was perfectly prepared. Add a nice Pinot Noir to accompany my meal. My friends all had pasta dishes which they seem to enjoy, also quite generous portions. I finished with a decent cappuccino. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but it is reasonably priced for this size of their dishes. They have outdoor seating in the warmer weather.

Delicious

By R R |

I loved this place. The offer a 3 course fixed price menu. The non-dairy vegetarian soups are delicious. The eggplant pasta dish is incredible and they will make it without the cheese if requested. I had the lemon sorbet for dessert and it was the perfect ending to a delicious inexpensive meal. You can't go wrong.

Nice place for my NY Marathon dinner

By Gary K |

Nice little restaurant near the finish. It was clean, warm and friendly. We ordered from the $19.95 price fixe menu. The portions were decent. Not huge but we were certainly not hungry when we left. The calamari was well cooked but the breading was a little overly crunchy. The penne alla vodka was very good. Definitely recommend.

I don’t understand why such great reviews.

By Sunset92 |

I don’t understand why such great reviews. We had dinner there a few days before Christmas. My son-in-law choose the restaurant. I can honestly say that nobody enjoys their food. This is not authentic Italian food! We should’ve stayed in Brooklyn. This was definitely our first and last visit. Not many people can mess up chicken Parm or bruschetta.

nice Italian

By SeaKayak25 |

I was quite impressed with the Fried Calamari and Penne Puttanescaand was very happy with the quality. Service is good.

My Favorite Local Spot

By kitkat1043 |

If you like Italian food you can't go wrong with Bella Luna. In fact this has become over the years my favorite place to go whenever my friends and I have our annual get to gathers. The food is good, the prices are good and I think the service is good. We often take advantage of their 3 course menu which is $19.95 per person. (dine in only) You can't beat that! With this menu you also get a glass of montepul ciano or pinot grigio for just $5.00! What more can you ask for! It is family friendly as well.

Sunday Brunch for 21!

By KKD1 |

This past Sunday, my sister was celebrating an important event in her life and invited her family and close friends to brunch at Bella Luna as it is her favorite local restaurant in Manhattan. From the start, the staff could not have been more accommodating to her by reserving an entire area of the restaurant for her guests. They even put the place cards at each person's plate for her. The morning of the event, she decided to reconfigure the area for her event and the staff immediately changed the plan without comment. When all 21 arrived, they found their places easily and our waiter quickly took drink orders mostly mimosas and spicy bloody marys. Our waiter, took our orders and the food was served quickly, was hot and delicious. We equally ordered brunch items as well as their wonderful Italian entrees. My eggplant parmesan was cooked perfectly and paired with julienne vegies - yummy. By the looks of the other dishes served, they looked equally as delicious. I can't say enough about the service and food. This restaurant staff helped us make wonderful memories. Thank you.

Good for takeout

By 643adrians |

I used the takeout twice. I never had to wait long, only about 15 min. The pasta was great and the chicken was good, though it didn't look that nice. It is great value for what you pay.

Reasonable prices, reasonable food

By NYCtraveller08 |

It's always fine. Nice outdoor dining in good weather and decent bar inside. Decor is pleasant and they have cheap options ($10 pasta, $5 wine) as well as pricier ones.

Good pasta, cheap and fast service

By DianaFontoura |

My boyfriend and I were tired searching for a quick place for dinner - glad we found this place! Good service, great food, not expensive at all (Penne alla vodka for only 10 bucks, pasta stuffed with goat cheese for 14 and glass of wine for 5) Would definitely come back for a more relaxed dinner.

Upper Westside Italian

By KeepWandering |

We had a group of seven. Family with kids and other adults. The food is classic Italian and meets the needs of adults as well as kids. It’s loud enough that kids don’t feel they have to be so quite.

A SIMPLE REQUEST

By NYTrendies |

Dear Bella Luna, You are the perfect neighborhood restaurant: good food, pleasant & efficient wait staff, accommodating chef, modest prices. But , "per favore", renovate those two awful looking bathrooms ! Just re-paint them (get rid of the ugly brown paint), hang some pleasant photos, place the mirror at a normal height, & add a new shelf. "Grazie"

Good brunch

By Jonas F |

Slipped in here for weekend brunch after a walk in Harlem and Central park. The food and the service was good , to a reasonable price.

Fantastic food and service at a great price

By Tokyopro |

Fixed price menu superb - wonderful Caesar salad, homemade ravioli and sauce and gelato dessert for $20.00 - I make sure to go there with friends and family each time I go to New York. Lovely decor as well. Highly recommended compared to other Manhattan restaurants.

What a find!

By Antigoniesq |

We are so lucky to live a few blocks away from Bella Luna! This is an excellent restaurant and my and husband's favourite in the UWS. We like the decor, the professionalism of the waiters, the fact that it's quiet enabling conversation, and last but not least, the delicious pastas, appetizers and main courses, all at a great value! We have enjoyed going there every single time, and so have friends we took along with us. Highly recommended.

They are moving!!!!

By William G |

OMG. When I heard they are moving? No way...WAY! BUT ONLY A COUPLE STEPS DOWN THE STREET. This place better keep their menu and low prices and friendly staff and delicious food. Get to know these people. Everyone that works at Bella Luna seems to really like their jobs. Terrific management and consistent quality. I don't see how they continue to do it but, hey, why question a good thing. They deliver too. The bar is very cozy and I believe once the weather gets warm, there is outside seating. Just sit back and enjoy.

Disappointing Dinner

By X3504C |

There are much better Italian restaurants on the UWS! Decided to book a table at this restaurant because it was a convenient location that could accommodate a group. To their credit, the restaurant was able to increase our reservation size from 7 to 10 people the day of the reservation. That was where the good service ended. When our friends arrived an hour early, they were told the bar was full (despite empty seats) and perhaps they would like to try a bar across the street instead. WHAT?!?! Who says this to customers who already have a dinner reservation? The server was minimally attentive, somewhat cold, and not at all welcoming throughout our entire meal. I ordered the eggplant which was very bland. The chicken and veal in 2 dishes was quite tender, though again not particularly flavorful. Pasta puttanesca was the best dish at the table, although strangely it came with several whole anchovies across the top, rather than sauteed and incorporated into the sauce, as is the usual preparation. Each of us felt that our meal was "OK" but "nothing special." Each of us felt this was a "do not return" restaurant when there are so many better options nearby.

Attractive room, very good menu

By traveler2703D |

We had not been back to Bella Luna since they moved to this more attractive location - lots of exposed brick and wood - charming and rustic. Lots of different pastas on offer, in addition to "second plate" entrees. Many appetizers and salads as well. The specials of the evening included a pasta and a fish dish. There is a most reasonable wine list, a selection of beers, and a house red/white for a bargain $7 per glass. The bread was excellent, as was the fruity and peppery olive oil for dipping. The service was attentive and efficient. We'd definitely go back.

Perfect comfort food for tired travelers

By EHT |

I was looking for authentic Italian food close to our hotel for the first night of our trip to the Northeast. I was not disappointed. The atmosphere was very casual. Families with young children were there. The service was attentive but not intrusive and the food was fantastic. Would go back again and again if I lived in the neighborhood.

My version of "cheers"

By Relf25 |

I've come here for over a decade and can't get enough. From the great staff...Tim (fabulous waiter and musician) and David (amazing maitre'd). This place has it all. Amazingly inexpensive prices for mouth-wateringly delectable food. Nice wine selection...great refreshing beverages...a veggie table...calming ambiance...absolutely 2 tv's at the bar for all you newies and sports fans...this is my go to spot in nyc always! Hope you enjoy too!

Excellent neighborhood restaurant

By marshcsutherland |

Excellent cuisine. Top notch Caesar salad. Impeccable professional service. Music just right type and just right volume. Demonstrative of everything that is great in NYC.

Nothing Special

By Neponset |

Met friends for dinner. Seems to attract a neighborhood crowd. While the prices were very reasonable, particularly for NYC, the food was somewhat bland - certainly nothing special or memorable. Probably would not return given the plethora of restaurants on the Upper West Side.

Nice moderately priced Italian restaurant

By lincan |

Picked Bella Luna from reviews on this site and they were spot on. The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere, good food and nice service. We were not rushed and were able to enjoy the food and the company as we were entertaining a guest from Estonia. Between us we had various salads, pastas and meat dishes and everyone enjoyed the food. I would definitely return.

From the street this looks like a very ordinary local place but once you are inside . . .

By truetray |

I am not sure if I have been here before - it is so nondescript that I might have forgotten. The menu is not exceptional but they had numerous pasta dishes priced at $12 for dinner which were very nicely done and while they had numerous larger and more sophisticated dishes it is unusual in NYC to fine very good fare at these price points. I had pasta and a salad. My dinner guest, pasta and a soup combined with a glass of decent house wine and we were at about $60. I will return if I am this neighborhood again. Servers were professional, friendly and knew their menus.

Bella Luna should be renamed mediocre luna

By LiaC177 |

I always feel that after the food the most important thing is a good waiter. This place had neither . The waiter had a problem with us from the beginning . He did not like that we had $avers and that we wanted to change our drink order from individual drinks to a bottle of wine. He left without saying a word and my sister had to go search for him to tell him what wine we wanted. Even his helper was no helper. Three times we had to ask for butter. Staff did not smile at all. About the food. I had gnocchi in bolognese sauce. Delicious except everyone kept stealing from my dish because theirs was awful. My sister said that her eggplant parmigiana was out of cosco's. My son said his dish tasted like a Chinese dish and my husband complained about his chicken. But mostly it was the waiter that spoiled our meal. We will not be back.

Excellent Prices and Very Good Meal!

By Melonie S |

We drove into NYC to meet another couple for dinner. They had been here on a couple of occasions and highly recommended it. We made reservations for Saturday night at 7:00. They sat us 10 minutes early even though the other couple hadn't arrived yet. It's a trendy and modern looking restaurant with a bar when you walk in. Our table began with the mixed green salad, the minestrone soup, and the fried calamari. Believing the mixed green salad was a single portion, it was a huge portion enough for three people. My wife advised it could have used more dressing. I was told the soups were good and I noticed the bottom of the bowl. The calamari was fresh and tasty with a salt and pepper seasoning. They provided us with bread and a dipping oil while we waited for our appetizers. Our main meal consisted of three orders of the Linguini Bella Luna and an order of the Rigatoni Alla Norma. Linguini Bella Luna was advertised as linguini with shrimp, mussels, scallops, clams, and calamari. However, our dishes had no scallops but a lot of calamari. Tasty. Portion was acceptable. Not a lot of shrimp, clams, or mussels, but the dish was only $21.95, so it makes sense. My wife's dish, Rigatoni Alla Norma, consisted of Rigatoni with eggplant and ricotta cheese. She was a fan. Portion was acceptable. We looked at a dessert menu but didn't see anything to our liking. A lot of creamy desserts, i.e. cheese cake, chocolate mousse cake, tiramisu, etc. We each had some coffee and as a coffee snob, I would say the coffee was good. Overall, it was a very nice experience. We weren't rushed during our meal. The service was attentive. The prices were very reasonable and surprisingly good considering it's NYC. That's very attractive. The restrooms were clean and there was a public parking lot within yards

Having not been back to Bella Luna for a while I decided to see if it was as good as I remembered. Both my daughter and I had to fish special. They have a prix FixHaving not been back to Bella Luna for a while I decided to see if it was as good as I remembered. Both my daughter and I had to fish special. a good choice. They have a price fixed menu for $19, you get a starter a main dish and dessert. Bella Luna: delicious food/great service

By Cindy B |

Having dined at Bella Luna twice ordering from both the brunch and regular menus I give it a thumbs up all the way around. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent and the prices extremely affordable by NYC standards. I was also pleased with the quality of the house Chardonnay. Both the veal Parmesan ordered on my first visit and the eggs Florentine selected on my second were delicious. The other members of my party were equally pleased with their choices. We definitely will return.

Excellent pasta

By chichiSouthCarolina |

Started with a lovely champagne cocktail. Then shared a scrumptious salad and angel hair pasta dish that was superb. The portions are large enough to share. We ate outside as it was a beautiful evening. Ended with a homemade taramiso that was superb. Service was very attentive! Would definately return!

The photo is not this restaurant

By nycmom22 |

This takes the space of two adjoining storefronts. I went for lunch. It is quiet at lunch. A good place to have a chat with friends, say. It is off the beaten track in a residential neighborhood not far from central Park and maybe a mile from Columbia University. Safe Italian food. As others have noted, the prices are a steal. The Tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce is excellent and $10.95. Red wine as little as $5 a glass! Livelier at night, I am sure. the side salad is a disappointment-straight from the bag. the tartuffo also looked straight from the freezer-but how does it ever look?

Average Italian restaurant

By NeverEnuf34450 |

We had lobster ravioli, a bit mush but flavorful, and another pasta dish, not so memorable. Meal came with delicious bread but no salad. Service was fine. A bit pricey for what we got.

Still a great neighborhood restaurant

By frequenttravler20 |

I have been coming here for 23 years and just had my kids here for the first time last week. The pastas are perfectly cooked with great flavor. Tiramisu, over the years, hasn’t changed. Always a comfortable place with great food at a reasonable price. I will keep coming back for many more years to come.

Enjoyable dinner with outdoor seating

By emjets32 |

Instead of dealing with the crowds in midtown we took a quick subway ride to Bella Luna on the upper west side for dinner before attending a Broadway play. They have a great prefix menu for $19.95. with house wine for $5 a glass. We sat outside on Columbus ave on a beautiful evening. The waitress was extremely nice and very informative about the menu and drink choices. My wife had soup and I had fried Calamari for appetizers which were good. We both had the Rigatoni with Italian Sausage for dinner that were excellent. A few glasses of wine and some Gelato for dessert and we were all set to be on our way. As we were eating dinner we noticed that the bus to the theater district stopped right on the corner which made for a nice easy trip down Broadway to the play. Would definitely go back again.

Good Food / Great ambianceg

This was one of the neighborhood restaurants that our VRBO host recommended - and it made the final "cut" after vetting by my teenage travel companions. We didn't have a reservation and arrived when there were some open tables - they managed to squeeze us in although it filled up by the time we left! My granddaughter and I enjoyed shrimp scampi with linguini, while her friend indulged in a gourmet pizza with sun dried tomatos and pesto with a white sauce. The house wine (my white was pinot grigio) was very good.
