Holiday highlight

By fantazeyEngland |

This isn't just a place to go for cocktails. It's a place to soak up the old style glamour of New York. The best cocktail I have ever had. Attentive service that I couldn't fault and a pianist. This is definitely one of my go to places when I'm back in New York.

NYC Thrillist Bar Stop!

By Jullie C |

Ok so this is one of the top thrillist bars to visit in the city. If you have seen the list you should try to chip away at it and visit them all. Some are very historic and tell a story like this one does. Just think of Bemelman drawing on the walls for his drinks as he lived upstairs. Here’s the thing, it’s a popular place so get there before 5pm to get a seat or plan to do afternoon team there. We enjoyed several cocktails at the bar, but be prepare to pay for the atmosphere, history and drinks. Enjoy!

One of My Favorite Bars

By GilAxlander |

The drawings on the walls are charming, the cocktails are good and life seems more refined here. Expensive but you get what you pay for. I prefer it in the afternoon when it is less crowded.

A great experience

By William E |

Bemelmans is a beautiful bar with a wonderful atmosphere. I highly recommend the martinis, but do know that they are large (not that that's a problem).

Great atmosphere

By Busastep |

I had very high hopes and expectations of this bar. We walked a LONG way through the city in the snow to experience a late night cocktail and were greeted with a live Jazz band, dimly lit bar, amazing paintings on the wall..everything I was hoping for. We got a seat at the bar and after a very long wait, we got a menu. We ordered and to be honest and much to my disappointment the drinks were nothing to write home about. I like a well made cocktail, and sadly this wasn't for me. Maybe an off day but it took the shine off of what should have been a very memorable drink.

Great atmosphere but difficult to hear the piano; not your typical quiet piano bar

By elliottq |

We arrived at 6 pm on a Saturday night. Great atmosphere and quite crowded. We landed a great table next to the banquette so we could sit side-by-side on the upholstered cushion facing directly towards the piano. The service was excellent as was the glass of Cabernet and two gin gimlets. Beware it is pricey. That cost $75 without tip, but consider that the "cover charge." We enjoyed talking with couples next to us but the banter in the lounge was loud enough that it was difficult to hear the piano over the conversations. The piano essentially provided atmosphere, but not really music that could be enjoyed. I think next time we might opt to try the Carlyle room in the same hotel, and adjacent to Bemelman's and take in the the show and meal that is served there.

A chilly winter night turned into a great time!

By Khloe S |

A friend of mine and I recently got drinks at Bemelmans to briefly escape one of those bitingly cold nights in NY where walking around is not ideal. Being that it is connected with the Carlyle, we expected a classy bar, but had no idea that it would also feel so cozy! The space is very intimate, decked out in warm hues paired with playful murals on the walls. My friend and I were lucky enough to sit in a corner booth that was very comfortable. That night, there was a great jazz trio playing. They played everything from standards to quirky covers (my favorite being when they covered Coldplay's "Yellow"). What's more, the service was great! Everyone was very attentive. A nice touch was when I ordered my cocktail, the Passion Royale, the server was kind enough to tell me a fun fact of how it got on the menu. Apparently it was for some Sex and the City themed event, and it was so popular it stayed. After drinking it, despite its kitschy background, I understand why as it was very nicely balanced. My friend got a glass of the Cabernet and expected it to be overpriced, but upon tasting, she could not stop talking about how good of a wine it was. Having visited other locations that require cover charges, the pricing for Bemelmans is exceptional considering the attention and atmosphere. I promise, not every venue takes as good care of you when you have to pay a cover. Definitely would recommend this place!

Such history and class!

By MrPhillipJohnson |

Each visit to Bemelmans Bar is better than the last! The attention to customer service and quality of cocktails is spectacular. I always take out of town guests to this hidden gem to take in the beautiful artwork and enjoy a drink in a comfortable yet elegant setting. Cheers to the next visit!

No visit to New York without a cocktail at Bemelmans Bar

By RROesch |

When in New York it is a tradition for us to enjoy this incredible and beautiful bar with one of their signature cocktails. The cocktails have their price but they are also pretty strong as well! This unique bar is a must for every cocktail and vintage bar lovers!

Skip it, it's a club now, completely destroyed.

By mark j |

Skip it, it's a club now, completely destroyed. couldn't hear the trio from 5 feet away, packed like sardines with sugar daddy's and sugar momma's. No more elegance and sophistication, a true gem that's gone, probably forever. They never responded to my emails either, when I asked about the trio of entertainment. Might as well have a DJ, never go back again.

Great entertainment in a classy room and great drinks

Stepping back in time!

By travlin'cook |

Love this bar, especially between 5-7. There is a great vibe here, waiters have been there forever and the pianist is seasoned! especially love it around Christmas, it's stunning. Haven't dined there yet but planning on it. also, very cool artwork on the walls.

Mixed feelings

By SteveHutchison |

We have loved staying at the Carlyle. However the bar leaves me with conflicting feelings. It is quite beautiful, the jazz is great and the cocktails lovely. However it is very expensive with a $25 cover charge per person ( meaning that 2 drinks will cost around $ 100 ) . That said our main gripe was some of the other customers - to put it politely they needed to get a room. Would hope to come back but would come before dinner!

Very Sad

By Coco |

My friend and I arrived about 5:30, we waited a long while for someone to acknowledge us, finally asked a bartender if we should seat ourselves and he told us someone would be with us - 2 people came in behind us and he invited them to sit at the bar! Another 5 mins and the Host grumpily showed us to a teeny table and barked that we knew we had to pay a $15.00 cover charge - we said fine, we knew that. We sat at least another 5 mins, trying to get the QR code to work - it didn't - finally a waiter rushed up and gave us drink menus - then at least another 5 mins for him to come back to take our orders. Drinks finally arrived and they were just right, the bar snacks were a nice addition - and the piano music was lovely. It was very loud in there and it is expensive - but had we been made to feel welcome and valued, we would have ordered appetizers and more drinks. Clearly they didn't care so much if we came back because they knew there are plenty more visitors waiting to come- so sad that such an iconic place treats visitors like this - By the way, we were well dressed and polite ladies -

Famous, popular bar in the Carlyle Hotel

By Tiburon09 |

A very popular bar...opens at noon and serves light food menu starting at 5:00. Tried to get in on a Monday evening, couldn’t get in the door. Quite loud but everyone seemed to be having a good time. Finally did go in mid afternoon and had an excellent $20.00 Irish Coffee. Beautifully appointed just as is everything in the Carlyle.

The joint was jumpin last Saturday night. A Must.

By Thomas C |

Great drinks, Great service, hip crowd. A New York must see! Great music. The drinks are delicious by the way

Old school classy bar

By R_981 |

Great old school small bar inside the Carlyle hotel on the Upper East side. Nice ambiance, decoration and seamless service.

Overpriced. Overrated.

By Mary T |

We went for cocktails on a Monday late afternoon. A big point in favor of the place is that they check for vaccination certificates and IDs. Of course, once you get into the bar, you realize why: it is tiny and there is no possibility of social distancing. We ordered martinis: came not cold. Had to add ice. We were unimpressed with their bar snack menu. The famous paintings on the walls are interesting, both in the bar itself and the outside lounge. Personnel is gracious. But the bill for two drinks with tax and tip was $64. Not worth it.

You need to experience this place

By Sandy B |

Being a lifelong fan of the Madeline books and a history lover, I couldn’t wait to have drinks at this bar. We arrived at around 8:00 and the place was packed. The bar manager was reluctant to find us a table….I think it was because they value a certain clientele there….the place was filled with young people. After some convincing we managed to secure a table. The inside of the bar, as promised, is covered with beautiful murals. It was so charming. Although I loved our time here, be warned, the drinks are expensive and there is a cover charge after a certain time. We felt like the cost was worth the experience, but be prepared for a costly night out.

pricey but wonderful

By Karen R |

I had a wonderful martini and excellent nibbles at this delightfully whimsical bar. The murals on gold leaf are of fanciful animals cavorting around a park by Ludwig Bemelman, the illustrator and author of the Madeline books. It is a great place to take a quiet mid-afternoon break.

Memorable

By AnnCan_8 |

Here is why we love Bemelman's Bar: Comfy leather seating (if lucky enough to sit along the wall), Picturesque murals, Tasty cocktails, Live music and Professional service, especially if lucky to have the wonderful Manuel as your server.

Great place with outstanding entertainment

By Peter K |

Visited Bemelmans on a Sunday night to take in the show presented by Billy Stritch and Jim Caruso. The bar itself is a wonderful venue rightfully celebrated for its warm and classy feel with the beautiful artwork on display on its walls. The show by these performers is a must see for anyone who values classic Sinatra themed music. Two very accomplished musical performers provide a great show. Highly recommended.

Wonderful bar scene

Delicious cocktails, excellent snacks, great decor, and perfect people watching. Not a cheap evening but definitely one you'll remember.

Fabulous lunch

Wonderful ambience. Sat across from Angelica Houston. Many celeb sightings in this bar. Great service and delicious food. Does not disappoint.

A real trip

Out of another era. Somewhat overpriced by the drinks and food are top notch. The atmosphere steals the show. Worth it

Rude and embarrassing experience

By Sheila B |

My husband and I decided to end our New York visit celebrating our sons birthday (who lives here ) at Bemelmans bar last night. We are staying across the street at The Surrey and decided to also check out The Carlyle hotel for a possible future trip. We went into the bar after 9pm and were aware of the cover charge and it was fine. We found a table next to the piano and ordered 2 glasses of port. The pianist and singer were very good. My husband and I have been married 37 years and our song which we have always asked for when we are in these kinds of places is the old “Stars fell over Alabama” . The singer was very happy to preform this for us and said it was a favorite of his. After a few minutes break he started it for us. As we always do we stood up next to our table , not in anyone’s way just barely slow dancing. The manager of the bar came over and abruptly, loudly, and in front of a large group of people told us to sit down! I didn’t even understand what was happening and looked at him thinking I misunderstood. He again said we had to sit down and could not dance. There is no sign, at the bar or on the web site saying this which is crazy anyway. I left and went out into the lobby in tears totally embarrassed leaving the untouched drink and left a 10$ tip in the pianist jar. This was not their fault. My husband asked to pay the bill and told them we were leaving. Several people sitting nearby came up to him in shock we had been treated this way. The hotel manager on duty and then the bar manager came over to us in the lobby and were unapologetic and saying it was not their fault. The bar manager told my husband he would refund our bill which is the least of my concerns. I felt embarrassed, humiliated and actually wondered if in the current political climate the particular song was why this happened. I have no idea but I will never recommend or set foot in this establishment again. Our travel agent always puts us in Virtuoso property’s and I will certainly let her know to contact Virtuoso about this hotel and our terrible experience.

Beware the cocktails!

By Constant_TravellerXX |

Beware of the cocktails, they're potent, addictive and will have you on the floor!! Hugely enjoyable evening with some work colleagues here after a full on day. Fab service, fab setting, this will long be a favorite drinking location in New York now.

Bemelman's Bar

By John B |

Went to Bemelman's Bar at the Carlyle Hotel on Saturday night. Group of 4....2 couples. Got there around 9:30 PM. Got a table for the 4 of us.....tight squeeze. I sat in a chair, the other 3 in a booth. At 9:30 you have to pay a cover charge on Saturdays. $35 each at the tables, $15 each at the bar. Live jazz trio at that time. I thought the cover charge would go toward drink purchases but it did not. So it added up to $140 just to sit down with each drink being an additional $20 or so. So it can add up fast. It was a special occasion, so it was worth it. Great atmosphere, great cocktails and the trio was very nice to listen to (sax, bass, piano/vocals). Felt like a big shot for the night. I highly recommend it. To the Good Life!

Oozes character, and Booze

By SHFT54 |

Prices aside, you be hard pressed to find a more perfect place to have a drink. Great service from seasoned mixologists, a fantastic trio of bar snacks when you sit down, and the art exhibit that is the walls. Places like this can not be recreated, they have marinated over time getting better and better with age. Entering around noon on a weekday meant we had the entire bar to ourselves free to walk the entire space and truly enjoy the murals. It's gorgeous and worth the trip to the upper east side alone.

Great room and cocktails

By John W |

We went for the experience and drinks. The room is great and the drinks were good. The seating is tight with many people squeezed in on a Sunday afternoon. the music was pleasant. Expensive but probably worth it

Come early to get a seat at this cozy bar.

By crunch6 |

Enjoy the piano player's music and the Bemelman murals as you sip a Cosmo and enjoy the atmosphere at this classic bar.

Great place to drop in early for a cocktail

By GypsyAtLast |

It was very, very crowded the afternoon we popped by. Perhaps they were short staffed but we could tell the waitstaff were harried. Cocktails were terrific though. And how cool to be there and have the experience.

Great bar!

By George C |

What a brilliant space! Great atmosphere and ambience / drinks are great Small and cosy and great pianist! Will be back!

Divine!

By Franquito |

One word: divine! I went with a friend last friday night. It was a busy night but we managed to get a table easily. The food was lovely, as well as the drinks. All the waiters have been very helpful. But I want to give a special thanks to the manager Javier. His hospitality was excellent towards us and to the rest of the different guest at the different tables. Congratulations!

A touch of nostalgia

By Parker C |

I used to come here often when I lived in Manhattan and made a point to go on a recent trip back east. It's a time capsule of a New York from a different era - and so much fun! It's crowded and it's expensive, so don't go if you can't get over those things. But if you enjoy live piano bar, chatting with the next table of folks, and well done cocktails in a historic setting, you should go. And don't forget that the entire bar is covered with murals painted by the gentleman that wrote the "Madelaine" childrens books and it may be worth going to see those alone.

Highlight of our time in NYC

By Neil A |

We were told to go here by our bartender at The Pierre Hotel. What a treat to sit there by the piano and be entertained by Chris Gillespie and his trio. Chris moves from song to song with such charisma and class and his rendition of Take Five mixed with Bach's fugue in D minor was a show stopper. Was like stepping back to the 1930's. Fabulous venue. Intimate setting. Amazing entertainment, and our waiter Roger took great care of us. Thank you for a memorable evening. We will be back!

Worth the Cost

By DWC |

Meet family members for cocktails last night. The art work at this venue and the adjoining dining room are incredible. The bartender and captain were fabulous and really took care of us. The drinks were wonderful. I had the "Madeline Vesper." We dropped a drink at our table, before we even started drinking, and they moved us to a nicer one. Even when they had trouble with the billing system, they went out of their way to make it effortless. It's expensive, but that's why it is a NYC 5 star hotel. Cheers!

It was all a dream

By Rebecca S |

Of all the bars in all the towns in all of the world, my best friend, Lucy, and I found ourselves fated to be in what I can only describe to you as the greatest bar in the greatest city that ever existed in the history of the world. I'll begin by addressing some of the complaints you may have read here or on reddit---If you are looking for a fast and affordable night cap, you should not go to Bemelman's. If you are at Bemelman's and you are feeling any sense of impatience, respectfully, you are missing the entire point. If you are worried that you will be crowded by influencers----we saw none. I should mention we were there on a Wednesday and so I can't speak for the crowd on peak nights. That being said---try Bemelman's on a Wednesday. I had never heard of Bemelman's, but a kind man that I met at Bryant Park Cafe earlier in the day recommended it. I joked that it was a name you could say, even very ,very drunk. I didnt google it until we were already en route. Any available press gloated celebrity hobnobbery and prestigious accolades (top ten bars in nyc) that as i read them I wondered if I had signed us up for a bad time. I got the idea that this was a peep hole into the elusive and unattainable glamorous side of a city that most people just sped on railways underneath. The whole ride there, after I finally googled the place, I thought perhaps we would be turned away (no reservations) or otherwise be outed immediately as a couple of Kentucky imposters who clearly hit the dispensary on the way. I could not have been more wrong. Bemelmans is the kind of place you can go where you are not entirely sure the rest of the town is still on the other side of the door---and thats okay. The drinks are expensive, but they come with a trio of complimentary nibbles. The value is obvious. (If you're looking for a cocktail menu to compare it to I would say its priced similarly to Caesar's palace in Vegas but instead of being in a flashly room full of addicts-----you're at Bemelmans.) I found myself daydreaming my own sort of "midnight in paris" here in New York. Bemelmans is a place where the walls are artworks that remind you of all the best feelings of whimsy and levity you forgot you used to feel. Yes there is a cover. The live music is world class in a room that seats like 25 people you should be so grateful the cover is under 50 bucks and if you arent you have some personal work to do and therefore should not come to Bemelmans. The staff is distinguished but warm and welcoming. Bemelman's crew is elite---not elitist. We were treated with the same attention and interest that i imagined they would have treated any celebrity with. (and regularly do) The crowd (at least on wednesday) seemed local and regular. We made friends. We danced. We ate FREE snacks. As someone who manages and orders liquor for a bar I can tell you that based on the ingredients in these drinks and , considering the scarcity of seats in such a prime location in the city------this is actually very fairly priced. I wish I was Bemelmans right now but i cant be so you should go hahahaha love, becca

IT'S OUR NIGHT AT THE CAFE CARLYLE!

By johnnnita |

I assume that Bemelmans Bar and Cafe Carlyle are one and the same (perhaps not). We had both the dinner and show in the main room in March 2022. It was a special occasion and on our original "bucket list" for NYC. On multiple visits before covid, one could not make a reservation. This time, we were able to (thanks covid). Overall, we were very pleased with both the entertainment and our pre-show dinner. We made reservations in advance of our trip (of course). We've walked by on visits before to peek in only. This night, we arrived a little early just so we could soak up the atmosphere and get a good seat. Our seat was along the wall bank and in the corner, with a great view of the entertainment stage. Actually, any seat in there would be fine. The room is small and elegant (some say old school). It was perfect for us. Our server was very efficient and helpful with the menu and attention. If one remembers, it's like a "dinner theater", but with music. Off the separate "Cocktail Menu" we had two classes of Perrier-Jouet champagne off their cocktail menu. Then, we ordered their "Two Course Prix Fixe" menu selection. You can choose an appetizer and one main dish. We also chose some side dishes and a dessert. I had first the Lobster Bisque as a starter. For the main dishes we ordered the Murray's Roasted Half-Chicken and Faroe Island Salmon. My wife also ordered the Broccoli Salad. Portions were generous. I wouldn't say they were creative, but tasted fine. Of course, for dessert we had to have the traditional New York Cheesecake. After dinner, we enjoyed the performance of Hamilton Leithauser and his back up band. We had never heard of him before since we are not locals. It turns out he is quite well known and popular in the New York scene. Later on this year, we discovered he provides musical scores for TV shows/series. His style was unique and it took a few songs for us to get in to his groove. Still, he has his own style and delivery. If you can now get in and have never been, you must try and enjoy your night out at the Cafe Carlyle with entertainment. If you book online, keep in mind that you must pay separately for the show and dinner. It is expensive, but worth the evening of dining out somewhere special and entertaining.

GREAT, GREAT, GREAT! AND I am a New Yorker!

By EileenO727 |

Have been here several times, including with my grandchildren. Yes, the prices may give you sticker shock, but for a place that has "New York City" written all over it, it is a comfy, cozy and nostalgic trip to the New York City that we dream about. I love the cozy banquettes and the murals. Ah, the murals! Ludwig Bemelmann's Madeline murals were his coin of exchange for his stay in the hotel eons ago. They are timeless, and I pointed them out to my little grandchildren when we went in the afternoon before heading over to Lincoln Center. They grace not only the walls, but the little table lamps. A top-notch piano player was here when we went, and I have to say the selection of tunes was great for the little and big audience. I loved being here with them, and I kind of regretted having to rush out for a matinee. The service is friendly but discreet, and I thoroughly enjoyed the little table snacks that appear as soon as you order. I understand that Mick Jagger recently was there - though the place would still have drawing power for the average Joe. No snootiness here! Duck in to avoid the crowds racing to get to the next hot thing - this place is a classic and will be around long after the shine begins to dim on the latest go-to place:)

First time here

By Annette Hoffman |

I read a recent article in the New York Times about the pianist, Earl Rose, who has been playing here for years and I had to check it out. The music is wonderful, the atmosphere is fun and the staff is fantastic. I will definitely become a regular here. Can't wait to come back!!!

Fabulous Manhattan!

By jspmay |

We stopped in to Bemelmans for a late lunch and drinks on a Saturday afternoon. There was a Madeline Tea going on so we opted not to sit in the bar, but the outer rooms were lovely and cozy. My husband ordered a Cobb salad and I had the cheese plate, both were wonderful and the Manhattan I ordered was fabulous!

Our favorite lounge in NYC

By Ddad312 |

Bemelman's Bar is an Oasis in the NYC Desert! Fabulous Mixologists deliver side cars with every perfectly made martini, while some of the best jazz combos deliver relaxing music that soothes the soul. After over 15 visits in the past few years, Bemelman's never disappoints. The combos keep changing, but the music is always smooth and pure. Our requests are always played, whether Sinatra tunes or Broadway favorites, and the ambiance is like a trip back to the era when crooners played lounge venues like this all over the world. It just doesn't get old, and we'l be back there again soon!

Outstanding service

By Canterqueen |

If you are lucky enough to have Sharif as your bartender you are in good hands! Take his recommendation on the bar menu.

THE most beautiful bar in the world

By Scott M |

Yes it is more expensive than most bars in NYC. But it has that something that is always worth the trip. The cocktails are excellent, live music is frequent (even before the evening cover charge) and the atmosphere timeless. Bemelmans murals somehow make this place your home. So get there early in the afternoon, sit back, and enjoy old time NYC.

Terrible service and rude bartender

By schmutzz |

Waited 10 minutes sat at the bar for our drinks order to be taken then was asked to pay as we went (which wasn’t a problem) and walked to the end of the bar to pay on my phone. Was then asked to sign which I did, not really paying attention to the receipt. This was our first time in NYC in a long time and normally we would have left a tip before we left (we were planning on having more than one drink) however the bartender came back to me and very crossly asked for us to pay for service which I thought was absolutely shocking as by this point there were people sat next to us who looked equally shocked. After that we decided to leave once we finished our drinks and won’t be coming back. No issue paying a service charge but not when the service is poor and people are just incredibly rude and entitled.

No longer what I could call a “piano bar”

By Isaac M |

Too noisy to operate as a piano bar. Could barely hear the piano through the noise. A radical downturn since my last boat a year ago

Classic New York bar

By servis |

Famous hotel bar with piano and live jazz. Service is mediocre, asked for more salad dressing, never arrived. Slow to refill ice tea. Waiters polite but but not very friendly, they don’t really want to talk. I ordered beef sliders medium, arrived too rare, not much flavor. Dressing on seafood salad not flavorful. Slow to bring check. Manager Javier Martinez very impressive, he will rise in Rosewood management and become an important hotel administrator. Overall an expensive place and the service and flavor should be top notch. Hopefully they will improve under Mr Martinez’s tutelage.

The Best Cocktails in NYC

By catharinenyc |

The most wonderful cocktails and atmosphere in NYC - a true classic! Be sure to inquire ahead about live music (and get a seat early!), as this really makes the experience. Their Bemelman's special cocktails are all delicious, though you cannot go wrong with anything you order - the bartenders are beyond the best and the service is exceptional.

Excellent Bar

By Klaus E |

It is one of the most famous and excellent Bar in New York. The walls are covered with murals of Ludwig Bemelman’s Madelin stories. We meant to be there by 5pm but got delayed quite a bit and had to wait to get a table. The manager reckoned 40 minutes, but it was about an hour we had to stand and wait, BUT it was one of the 3-4 days that Earl Rose tickles the ivories there! A very famous pianist playing all the favourites from time gone by and sometimes combining a few in a medley! For this alone it was worth the wait! When we finally got our table and it was a nice one, we enjoyed their cocktails as well as the music! Friendly and quick service. Will visit again for sure, but will try to come at a less busy time.

The Perfect Old Fashion

By Anita C |

This is my favourite place to stop for a cocktail when I'm in NY. The murals on the walls, the lighting and bartenders are amazing! You feel like to stepped into another decade.

Finally Made It!

By Julie S |

I've been wanting to see the murals for many years. At last I had the time, was near enough and made a point of it. I'm so glad. The murals by the creator of Madeline are whimsical and like a warm embrace. My gin and tonic was $22 but the service was superb. I'll take my mom here in January.

Historic Bar

The provenance of this special little corner of a grand hotel is part of what makes Bemelmans Bar a truly unique place to enjoy a cocktail with friends.

Bucket List Visit - Don't confuse the bar with Dowling's restaurant

By CraftBeers |

Bemelmans Bar is an iconic New York landmark located inside the Carlyle Hotel and is immediately adjacent to their restaurant called Dowling. There are no reservations in the bar. It's first come, first served. We stood in line for 45 minutes on a Saturday night at 6:00 PM to get in. I am so glad we did. Ludwig Bemelman is an artist and author of Madeline. You know the one "Twelve little girls in two straight lines." He lived in the building free while he painted this bar. It's his last publicly displayed mural. You can find Madeline and the two lines to the left of the bar as you face it behind the pillar. The servers wear white jackets and are the kindest politest people. A large piano sits in the middle of the small bar playing music. It's just lovely. We enjoyed an old fashion and a few snacks from the menu. I could not have been more thrilled with being there. Can you imagine the things that have happened in that bar since it was built and painted in 1947? Iconic bucket list visit!

Cocktails with atmosphere

By MichaelCambridge53 |

This classic old-time New York bar offers fantastic cocktails in an intimate and classy setting, with piano accompaniment before 8-30pm and other music (with cover charge) after 9-30.

A JOY

By ToddyChristchurch |

Always try and visit this delightful bar when in NYC. Every time I go I see something in the murals that I haven’t seen before.

Birthday Cocktails

By cparisgirl |

Husband and I stopped for afternoon cocktails. We were celebrating my birthday- I had a champagne cocktail, husband had Manhattan- both were beautiful and delicious. Sharif was an awesome, fun bartender and made my birthday very special. The decor and atmosphere were everything you have heard. I can’t wait to come back.

A NY MUST

By STUNNING212 |

Music and service were excellent from the moment you arrive. Love the old world art deco interior--gives character & flavor to the existing atmosphere. Nice mix of clientele.

Great Hotel Bar for an after work experience

By Harvey E |

My wife and I love to sneak out for an relaxing time at the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel. Their pianist Chris passed away a few months back and they are looking for a permanent replacement the temporary replacements were nice but nothing like Chris. Even with great music some of the patrons are so rude they talk over the music, undermining the ambiance.

Unfortunate visit

By Julia v |

Waiter dropped the complete cocktail on my friend and me. As compensation, the drink was replaced but no apologies offered. As the cocktail was a sweet one, it has left very sticky stains, our clothes were wet and sticky and the feeling was very unpleasant during the remainder of the evening. Also my new coat and the clothes of my friend had to go to cleaner. Therefore the way the situation was dealt with by the Bemelmans Bar was below my expectation and disappointing.

Classic NY cocktails

Beautiful. Crowded expensive wonderful. Martinis were perfect. Piano player was engaging. The room is fabulous. Go if you get a chance.

This is New York!

By John v |

Having read so much about Bemelmans Bar I just had to visit this iconic piano bar on NYC’s Upper East side. And what better an occasion to visit the place than Christmas night. When you enter Bemelmans Bar you step back in time to a New York that’s straight out of a classic movie. My wife, daughter and I managed to secure a booth in the corner of the bar where we enjoyed exquisitely assembled cocktails and the soft jazz music of the Earl Rose Trio. The walls of the piano bar are adorned with original artwork by Ludwig Bemelman from his Madeline children’s books. Bemelmans Bar lived up to the hype in every sense. You can’t book a table but when I rang to check this I was told by a staff member, “We never turn people away!”

Amazed and bewildered

By Intheeventof |

The beauty of this location cannot be written about, you can only experience it. Go to The Carlyle. When you are there enjoy being surrounded by Madeline in all her glory. The bizarre part of the visit was the music system played the same song over and over again. Hopefully it has been fixed. ; )

Great ambience

By hankypanky505 |

This place is an institution, situated in The Carlyle Hotel on East 76th in NYC. My brother and a friend of ours decided to check it out and I am glad we did. First of all, Ludwig Bemelmans is famous for his Madeline children's books. There are murals painted all over the entire bar and on lampshades of various characters from his books, very cool. Lots of fantastic people watching here as it's in a fancy neighborhood and it's quite the local haunt. It's a little bit of a meat market as you can watch it all play out before your eyes. There was a really beautiful woman in her 50s sitting next to us who started chatting us up, I think looking for some action. Unfortunately for her, or us maybe, the three of us are all in committed relationships or it could've turned into quite the evening. But lots of interesting things to see here. Great piano player and really beautiful bar with comfortable chairs and furniture all the way in the back. A little expensive, but you're in New York and it's definitely worth the experience. Go check it out for happy hour, super fun. This would be a fun place for a first date....:-)

Good place for a Romantic Bar

By Panpi75 |

My wife and I went to listen to some nice Jazz and enjoy a couple of Martinis Early November 2017. This place really has a nice vibe to it, and the waiters are very professional and kind, something you would expect from a bar at The Carlyle. The Dirty Martini is very recommendable, as the barman is really a pro when it comes to making them just at the right level of dirtiness. To hear the music band they charge you a $25 cover charge per person, just as a heads up.

great music and energy

By Rachelontheroad |

Fabulous buzz and crowd. Great for people watching. Also offers a solid wine and cocktail list and live music.

A truly unique music bar experience with so much to offer

By Simple22 |

We sat for early drinks before dinner and found the the whole place captivating Not realising there was so much history to the bar before our arrival The wall murals are truly interesting and the live music bolsters the setting further Overall feel of the place was very upbeat with everyone enjoying the mood We got talking to another patron, who was born locally and stated this was his favourite place in NYC The cocktails menu is very extensive, so there is something for all tastes A must see place

Fun Friday night

By Jill M |

We really enjoyed cocktails & jazz here after dinner. My one comment is that I wish they didn't allow standing customers.

Perfect place for a Sazerac in winter.

By RBarnhart |

I've been in winter and in summer and I must say that winter is my favorite season at Bemelman's. And not just because as the snow blankets Central Park mere yards away, the mural's winter scenes echo that same charm. A warm room with warm lighting and all you want to do is drink whiskey while the piano man plays. The drinks are pricey but nice sized. Also, the waiter never rolls his eyes when you ask for a second snack trio. That kind of grace might be dying south of Houston but here it's still 1947 and Ludwig Bemelman himself sits in the corner toasting the lounge's completion with a Boulevardier. Or two.

A Perfect Evening at Bemelmans Bar

By Justin J |

So, we came to Bemelmans Bar with high expectations and they were all exceeded. The place is beautiful, the music is excellent, food and drink top notch, and the service is warm and attentive (Thank you, Leo, for a wonderful evening). We plan on making Bemelmans Bar a regular stop for all future trips to New York.

Classic bar scene in Manhattan

By teeare |

We spent a great three hours in this cozy room, enhanced by the gold leaf of Ludwig Bemelman's wall paintings. Earl Rose and his trio played the Great American Songbook and with our close up table we had a great view of Earl's long, graceful fingers performing their magic on the keyboard. And hey, a few very properly made Manhattan's iced the cake.

Famous bar you need to visit

By BadBenito |

A great location to see and be seen. Fantastic pianist. The beautiful crowd can be found here enjoying martinis. Best Pisco Sours in NYC. we stayed for drinks and also enjoyed complimentary snacks. Not cheap by any means, but compared to other bars in NYC it gives great value for the money. The cartoons by Ludwig Bemelman that adorn the walls are just another thing to enjoy.

The Holy Grail of Manhattan Bars

By James A |

As an Englishman in NY sitting at the bar around 4pm I was a little anxious that the bar lacked atmosphere... but relax, order a drink and take in the surroundings! A pianist sets up from 5.30pm, and by then people are queuing up for bar seats and tables! This is a bar for residents of the Carlyle, New Yorkers and Couples... If you’re lucky you’ll spot a few Celebs also.... the drinks wouldn’t be classed as crafted, but they’re perfectly balanced and definitely hit the mark! Order off menu, Manhattans, Old Fashioneds and Martinis... you’ll not be disappointed!

another decade to enjoy

other than the experience whith the restaurant, the visit in the BB was utterly pleasant. Nice dishes, friendly and professional service in an extraordinaire ambiente.

Finally got to go!

By SJM210 |

Always wanted to visit this place. Was thrilled during a recent trip to NYC when a local friend of mine asked to take me there. Great cocktails. Wonderful ambiance. Musicians were so talented. Can’t wait to go back!

No food until mid November 2018

By STL49 |

Beautiful and historic. Expensive drinks. Kitchen being renovated. Came for lunch, long walk. NO FOOD UNTIL MID NOVEMBER 2018. Call to verify when food resumes.

Great place have been going here since the 1970s

By VikingOpolo |

Great place; have been going here since the 1970s. You can sit in the music area at an additional price, however, the regular bar is fine.

After Dinner drinks Yes please

By bulltrvlr |

How Could you pass up a drink or two after a great meal at the restaurant. Throw some great music and that makes it even better. Oh yes and a few drinks just makes me look better to my longtime love.

Great story!

By FFSGF |

Ludwig Bemelmans, Writer of the childrens Madeline book, "payed" is stay at the hotel Carlyle by painting the walls of this small and lovely wine bar. The drawings are wonderful.

Step back in time

By PattyinIreland |

Best Kir Royale to have ever tasted. The bartender is attentive, not hovering ; knows the perfect time to ask if you’d like another or if you simply want to savor the atmosphere . Perfection.

Great service / Music

By Chris White |

Really nice complement of snacks, great dessers (we had the cheesecake), friendly jazz performance, nice crowd split between older groups and youngster couples.

See you at the Carlyle

By Richard M |

My wife and I ducked into the Carlyle for a cocktail at the famed Carlyle Bar--an upper East 70's must for the society crowd, and mere mortals like ourselves as well. Fabulous piano, dark and very romantic, white dinner jacketed waiter--an ultimate NYC experience.

A classic NYC Bar

By Doodlemeyer |

Have a cocktail, listen to the pianist, enjoy the classic vibe and the famous murals. Find a dark corner and people watch. Oh, and stumble into a celebrity on the way out - love you too, Tom Selleck! We'll be back!

Bemelmans, like meeting an old friend

By DanandJanC |

We made or visit to Bemelmans like on every trip to NYC last night, and.were not disappointed. All is the same, with the busy bar, great piano player and absolutely one of,a kind atmosphere. The place was absolutely jammed, three deep at the bar. Like nowhere else in this wonderful city or anywhere else.

One of the Best Bars in the World!

By Sarah G |

Bemelmans Bar is located in The Carlyle Hotel in the Upper East side of NYC. It is one of the best bars in the world, combining old world charm with delicious cocktails and bar snacks to die for. While you eat and drink you can sit back and listen to jazz - Woody Allen and his band play here most Monday nights, or to the pianist playing softly in the background. Here you will see NY old money meet the new up and coming beautiful people and as such just sitting in Bemelmans Bar and watching the people come and go is an entertainment in itself. The bar is famous for it's cocktails - my personal favourite is an 'Old Cuban', but there are lots to try out, but be warned these cocktails are strong!!

Beyond the legend. . . .

By HowE90 |

Beyond the legend, this bar is a fun, active NY scene with attentive bar tenders. For all the comfort of the tables in the bar, we prefer just sitting at the bar and having a drink/

Woody May Be At the Next Table

By Ronald Fairbairn |

You are in the heart of sophisticated New York. Stay as long as you want. Order a cocktail and nibble on the nuts (they'll bring 2nds or 3rd's if you ask). If you check the night times you can time your visit to hear the pianist, always top draw.

A night at the Carlyle

By vincybie |

Bemelmans bar is a high end jazz bar at the Carlyle NYC, a Rosewood Hotel. Doormen and host would scan you from head till toe before letting you in. We could see most guests were regulars and from upper class. There's a $15 dollars charge for each person. Drinks and foods menu of coz charged at upper scale price. Servers were extremely mannered and anything below 20% for tipping simply would not do.😂😂😂 We were there for the vocalist, it was a male vocal as well as the pianist that night. We made a call to enquire before going. Live music with vocal will begin from 6pm to 9pm. Sadly he only began to sing for the last 15 min of the entire session. Its such a shame, he had such magnificent voice. Wish he could sing few more songs. Anyone who will pay a visit to Hong Kong in the future, check the DarkSide at Rosewood Hong Kong. Its much better than Bemelmans. Much spacious, with a cool open patio for drink and mingle. Most importantly the live bands who perfomed at the DarkSide were simply the best!

Best hotel bar ever!

By 87DeadHead |

Oysters, steak, cocktails and wonderful live music... worth the cost and wait...I can’t wait to go back

Very good but

By JazzSooner |

Love the atmosphere, the drinks are delicious and the service can be quite good (altho they can be slow). It can be a bit loud and hard to hear the music. I also wish they had some female entertainers, seems nearly everyone working there, staff and musicians, is a man. Weird to notice, but it's true. All in all it's a great place tho.

Wonderful NYC slice of life

By jloug |

Loved the old school ambiance, superb pianist, and great service. We had two rounds of cocktails - you get your money's worth on the martinis. Another well-priced item (for NYC) was the raw oysters. The snacks they bring to the table are potato chips, nut mix, and cheese crackers, which are crazy good.

Our Favorite Martini Haunt

By expatm0m |

I actually first met my husband's parents here, so it's got memories for us. Almost 40 years later we love to meet here after work for one of the best (and most expensive) Martinis in town. Chase it down with a Cobb Salad and you're good to go!

See the murals, forget the service.

By SteelCityCouple |

Wanted to see Bemelman's charming murals, and were willing to buy a couple of overpriced cocktails as an entry fee. Read how loud & crowded it was in the evenings, so went around 2 pm, a dead time. Only 8 people in the place, served by two bartenders. We first sat at the bar, looked around a bit, and asked if we could move to a table. Without looking at us, bartender grumbled, 'Sit wherever you want.' We took a central table and admired the murals. After a while, we got ourselves drink menus from a nearby bench and picked a few that looked good. After another 10 minutes one of the bartenders swept past our table and said he'd be with us. After another 10 minutes, we left. The murals bring in a guaranteed stream of tourists, so they don't need to make the least effort on behalf of customers. Good for them!

Excelenciaa

By Lau |

Wonderful place that yes or if you have to go visit. It's like being in a 30's movie, the walls are painted and decorated by the artist Bemelsman, hence its name. You walk in and you realize that the place is pretty because of how the waiters and diners are dressed. Tables with lights, and the whole environment with medium lights. Excellent place, if the chairs are a bit uncomfortable, it is worth going once. It is a nice place to go with friends and have a great time and have an unforgettable experience. You get a great impression about the place and the treatment that the employees give you.

Beautiful Bar with a history!

By Michele H |

Such a beautiful bar. If you are a fan of Madeline you will love this bar. The drinks are overpriced but good. The other murals that Ludwig Bemelman painted in the bar are delightful. It is a beautiful place to enjoy a drink and a snack and just enjoy the views!

Iconic bar and restaurant

By randykiel23 |

A absolute must for you to see and enjoy, this place is in the upper east side in the Carlyle Hotel. The history about this place is great, Google it. Great service/ great staff/ great time.

Rude Maître D

By Karen and Mark |

Thé Maître D was quite the rudest person we have so far encountered in NYC Sadly cannot recommend We booked a 2pm lunch, arrived approx 1:50 pm Sat down at our reserved table to be told by a very rude man that the kitchen was closing in 1 minute « take it or leave it «

Always fun

By robcurtross |

We stop by Bemelmans Bar every month or two -- yesterday we were turned away at the Grolier Club which closed early, wandered up along Madison Avenue admiring the window treatments, and drowned our disappointments with two glasses of champagne, the free nuts, crackers and chips, and six oysters each. The place was crowded but since there was no piano, the noise level was tolerable. What fun!

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!

By Lourdes S |

We were very excited to visit such a famous bar, my expectations were high, sadly it was a disappointment . The Bar is too small for the amount of visitors, the manager was rude to us when we asked for a table. First he told us there was a list so we asked him to be included on the list ,he said he would not do so. We were very confused by his actions, be kept ignoring us, to get a drink we had to hustle in a corner to ask the bar tender, which was nice and sold us two Cosmopolitan, we only had this two drinks because it was very uncomfortable to be standing up in a corner among others and with no service whatsoever. Attention was extremely bad and honestly the manager's attitude was very fishy to us, some made the list other's like us didn't!! I wonder why??????$$$$$...

Classic Manhattan Hobnob-Chic Tete a tete Bar

By William A |

Pretty high on the high-end end of Manhattan watering holes, Bemelmans is a truly worthwhile destination for a legitimate taste of where society swells do and have gathered to bathe in the luminescence of their own self adolotry. The drinks are well poured, the bar snacks luxurious and there is live jazzy grand piano accompaniment featuring Gershwin, Porter, and other notable composers from the ‘30s and ‘40s. Walls are enchantingly bedecked in murals by Ludwig Bemelman, illustrator of Eloise.

Go for the ambiance

By DavidWashingtonDC |

A glass of your favorite champagne, wine, bitters, cocktails will be the same but the experience can be vastly different. Unlike dining where a chicken is not a chicken and it makes sense to pay for breeding and preparation - drinks are drinks and it makes sense to pay for ambiance. This place transports you to a chic NY circa 1960. The service is wonderful without being intrusive. The piano player adds to the experience.

Great place, TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!

By jaxf9 |

Really nice very upscale bar. Expect to pay up here for a round of drinks. The major negative is that the bartenders are too busy hitting on women to serve you!! Then, they act like you are a peon and they are doing YOU A FAVOR BY SERVING YOU A $20 cocktail!!!

AN UNUSUAL EVENING

By delospoppy |

My husband and I go to Belmelmans Bar every December and also in the Spring. We love it there, the drinks the service and of course, the decor. Appetizers are always wonderful. Last night we went and had an unusual experience, Our table fell apart. We were sitting down having our cocktails and bottle of wine and the outside rim of the table fell on us it was pretty heavy, We didn't want it to totally fall so one of us ran to get somebody.... Two people, men working there came over and we got up and they picked up the outside part of it and carried it and the table away. Luckily, there was one table available and they moved us there. I have to say, we didn't ask for a comp drink or bottle of wine, but I was very surprised the manager didn't comp us a drink being the kind of place it is. The people next to us were pretty silly, they took a picture of it, don't know why, who knows. It is a great place, but we were just surprised of the out come.

What more can we say?

By southtexasguy8 |

Bemelmamans, Cafe Carlyle, dining room. All great. Wrapped in service. Expensive and value for the VP cost.

Disappointed - no class anymore...

By mark j |

Bemelman's used to be a great place to listen to great music, but not anymore. Although we got in, and could be at the bar, it is awful because you can't hear any of the music. It's a trend for hipster's and South American call girls, to hang out. How insulting to the musicians, why bother to play, just put on the radio. It would be so worth it for the high prices, if one can enjoy and actually hear the performers. It's so poor for the super talented musicians to be subjected to a noisy club scene. Bemelmans' lost it's class.

The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe

By Stan Tecza |

Bemelman bar is certainly interesting. Not too many patrons at the bar but it was early at the open. The outside dining in the Carlyle hotel was bustling. Ordered an old fashioned and explored the mural in quiet solitude which reminded me of the lion, the witch & the wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Would not mind returning for a lively piano bar scene. I think I prefer King Cole Bar in the St. Regis hotel more.

So lovely, clubby and warm

By Michele F |

Great place to have a drink and meet friends. Very old world. Beautiful atmosphere and the murals are very storied. Fun!

Tourist mecca

By Sluggo16 |

Cant really give the rating a terrible as we never experienced a drink while there. Bemelman's suffers from being a tourist destination. It is too small to realistically host a pre-dinner rush, especially on a weekend. I suppose dropping in early afternoon or really late night might find a person able to find a seat or at the very least enjoy the quaint and quiet that no doubt this bar has experienced in the past. Did a quick lap and exited quickly.

Busy, noisy but terrific place for jazz

By Suefowl |

Had a wonderful cocktail and light meal while listening to amazing piano during the 5:30-7:30pm timeframe. No cover charge until later in the evening.

Classic New York Elegance

By slimK |

This bar is in the Hotel Carlyle which is a statement in itself. Sophistication at its utmost with wonderful paintings by Ludwig Bemelman gracing the walls. There is a marvelous piano player that in the Bobby Short tradition sings a lot of Cole Porter. Make a reservation and transport yourself back to a time when women wore hats in restaurants and men stood when a women entered the room!

A must!

By Byron R |

Bemelman's is located in the Carlyle Hotel. The room is painted by the artist who created Madeleine (in exchange for lodging). We stopped by for a late night cocktail. There was a cover charge for the evening to listen to a jazz trio and as others have said drinks are expensive (but it is NY!) On this evening there was an open mike perhaps because the performers from Frozen where there and what a treat to have them contribute to the entertainment. They along with everyone else were incredibly friendly. The staff was great and very professional. Step back in time and enjoy Bemelmans you won't be disappointed, but remember it can get a bit crowded.

Just excellent!

By Raymond Abeltun |

Legendary and there is a reason why. The word legendary gets tossed around almost to easy these days. But Bemmelmans bar is legendary. The staff is just incredible and the drinks are of excellent quality aswell. Atmosphere and music makes our visits laidback and exciting at the same time.

Loved it

By Julie M |

A great place to hang out and listen to live jazz. Expensive with cover charge ro sit at a table but worth a treat once in a while. And you can stand at the bar for free.

Classic NYC!

By Carly |

Bemelmens is lively and so much fun. I just started a new job in the neighborhood so all of the Carlyle restaurants are going to quickly become regular spots for me. The storied wall art and live jazz are classic NYC. Excellent service and perfectly balanced cocktails. The complimentary bar snacks are delicious and such a nice touch.

Great experience!

By travlin'cook |

This is “Old” New York! This classy bar is fabulous for a cocktail or two and great music without a cover charge up until 7 or 8. Don’t miss it if you’re visiting NY and stop by if you live here and haven’t been!

By Alberto G. |

From the moment you enter this Bar the atmosphere takes you to a time when jazz and elegance were the benchmarks of NY. Pedro and Luis are the experts handling every sentimeter of their bar perfectly. I was fortunate to have been attended by Pedro and all his recommendations were excellent, I ordered the Beef Slides to his recommendation and they were magnificent, I recommend several of his signature cocktails that he was testing one by one and sincerely all expectacular. In addition to this the decoration with the walls drawn and the live music with the trio of Jazz, a show for all your senses.

Favorite NY Jazz Club

By Rance C |

This is my favorite jazz club in New York. Absolutely perfect! The talent is consistently top notch. We were treated to the Chris Gillespie Trio. Mr. Gillespie's vocals are superb, and the band played at exactly the right volume for the space. We arrived a bit after 9 and the place was packed including the bar. Somehow the staff found a table for us after a short wait, and I noticed others arriving after us were eventually seated. It's a little pricey but oh so worth it. Our group of four had five drinks, and the bill was over $300 including cover charge. I would (and will) pay it again in a heartbeat. Bemelman's is very lively, extremely busy, a little loud, has beautiful wallpaper and decor, and an unbelievably friendly and accommodating staff to make for the perfect evening in New York.

Classic, Old-School NYC

By BrigidTravels |

What a wonderful place for a cocktail. You feel like you've been thrown back in time, or at least on the set of "Mad Men." Live jazz, attentive service, and great people watching. When you tire of people-watching, the murals are equally entertaining.

Fabulous Bar

By Christine C. from VA |

This is a fabulous bar. A must for Madeline Book Lovers. The author of Madeline, Ludwig Bemelman painted the interior walls of this bar. It is beautiful and fun. Take time to wonder around and look at all the walls. The drinks and snacks are also really nice.

Would have loved to have tea there!

By dotters |

If you love Madeleine, this is the place. The walls are covered with the artwork! We checked out the menu and were all set - but no, there was a Kid'sTea and we weren't invited! We did see a gorgeous cake and cookies display, as well as fruit and veggies. Guess the girls were just so lucky! How great would it have been?

Where New York Glamour is Alive and Well

By sarah d |

If Pat O’Briens went to Harvard…you’d end up with this gorgeous piano bar that epitomizes New York City glamour. Adorned with wallpaper illustrated by its namesake, Ludwig Bemelman, the atmosphere is top-notch and so is the service.

Fantastic drink spot

By Jess L |

This spot is stunning. The art on the walls is directly from the book Madeline. The bar is named after the author of the book so it fits beautifully. The bartenders, especially Sharif, are very talented. Clean, quick, efficient, friendly and so great to interact with. 10/10 would recommend stopping into this amazing hotel.

A True Delight

By Tom L |

The room was full. Graciously the Maitre D Maitre found us a chair at the bar. The bartender immediately offered us service. This place knows customer service. Pedro is a top shelf bartender. It is an incredibly gorgoeous room. The walls are a delight. It's small. It's cosy. Guests are enjoying their cocktails. And who can resist their trio of salty snacks that they bring you with your drink. Every trip to New York should include a drink at Bemelmans Bar. It's memory will linger with you for many years to come.

Timeless classic

By AMF876 |

Live jazz, champagne, drawings on the walls the evoke eras past, when at its best, it does not get better...

Very New York

By edkiii |

I have visited the bemelmans for decades. It is usually crowded with live music but its small dance flloor has disappeared. The music is always good and it is worth the cover charge to have drinks in this chic room of whimsical murals.

Day Care Disaster

By TTFLA |

This review is for the bar only and does reflect the quality of the food. This was our 3rd time at Bemelmans Bar and I'm not sure what happened. It felt like an added stop on the Grayline Tour bus. There must have been 7 or more families dragging their kids through the bar like it was a ride at Disneyworld. Needless to say, at 4:00 in the afternoon the staff appeared unprepared for this deluge. We sat 30 minutes waiting for our $25 cocktails. Another 15 to get the snack trio. What used to be an upscale old school NYC bar appears to have turned into a day care disaster. Too bad.

Fabulous, luxurious bar - treat yourself

By @535family |

Someone recommended Bemelmans as a place to go for a drink and to see the wonderful artworks on the walls. It was fabulous - a real treat. I had two glasses of Sancerre which were perfect and lots of nibbles were provided. It’s expensive but worth it for the sumptuous surroundings. There was no entertainment on while I was there. I would definitely go again next time I’m in New York.

Dissapointing quality tho brilliant space

By Jim_Parle |

Well it looked great and was pretty busy but pretty average food and definitely New York prices. Waiter was a bit brusque too. My steak was good but not great.

NYC treasure

By Amy K |

Bemelmans Bar is a treasure in NYC (as is the Carlyle in general). You will get a beautifully made traditional drink at the bar and can take in all the glorious drawings on the walls. Highly recommend.

Hidden treasure in NYC

By Skislikeagirl |

Having read the reviews, I was expecting a very busy little place. Must have been the time of day we were there, because we had the whole place to ourselves. It was magical. It felt like an episode of MadMen or Sex in the City. A secret hideaway in the middle of a bustling city. A Saturday afternoon cocktail with friends surrounded by whimsical art and quiet jazz. Try the Paradis Royale, one of Bemelmans' signature drinks. A wonderful afternoon escape from the hustle of NYC.

A classy affair

By Bubski1905 |

Located in Carlyle Hotel in the upper east side, it is a lovely bar. We went for 1 cocktail and stayed for 7. Cocktails are very strong but delicious, especially the ones which come with a side car.

My FAVORITE place in NYC

By Betty M |

This charming (tiny, crowded, noisy) fantastic space is a NYC legend with wall murals by Bemelman. A treat, a delight, a treasure!

Outstanding

By stevesottl |

This has been a favorite spot of mine since my parents took me to t his bar for my 21st birthday many years ago. Last night I had a business group of 11 people with me following an exceptional meal at Vaucluse. The Jazz trip was outstanding, as usual and the Rose Champagne I ordered perfect with the ambience. This is a must go bar for those who want to explore the real NYC night life.

Classy Bar

By V P |

So much history in this place. Great atmosphere especially when they have live music. Drinks are bit expensive but it’s worth it. Woody Alen performs on Monday’s pls check the schedule since it could change

Over priced drinks and poor service

By Da |

I order a drink and after taxes and tip I paid $80...a rip off and the rude staff...the guy at the bar is probably the rudest bartender that I have encounter. Hostile towards women too.In addition to this, there are mice in the bar and restaurant. I would not recomended.

Romantic and Fabulous

By lschroederDresher |

This is the quintessential New York City cocktail bar, complete with piano bar, and bartenders who know how to make a perfect cocktail. We stopped by for drinks after a matinee. The bar scene was hustling but we managed to grab two seats at the bar which is a perfect place to watch other patrons come and go. The drinks are terrific, and the music was delightful. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience. Expect to pay well over $50 for two drinks but think of that as a true New York City experience in an oldie but great lounge

My favorite place for jazz in NYC

By Randy S |

I love Bemelmans! It reminds me of a 1940's movie set; all it needs is for Bogart and Bacall to come strolling in to complete the vision. It's not cheap; figure about $50 per person, but the jazz piano is uniformly excellent, which makes it all worth the price. Highly recommend!!!!

Something every New Yorker should do once in their life

By NYC_Geezer |

Stepping into Bemelmans Bar feels like stepping into a different era—one filled with elegance, charm, and classic New York sophistication. Nestled inside the Carlyle Hotel, this iconic bar is a true gem that combines world-class cocktails with an unforgettable atmosphere. The first thing that catches your eye is the whimsical mural by Ludwig Bemelmans, the creator of the Madeline children’s books. The artwork wraps around the bar and adds a touch of warmth and magic that sets the tone for the entire experience. The service was impeccable—attentive without being intrusive, with a knowledgeable staff that knows their craft inside and out. The cocktails were expertly made, perfectly balanced, and served with style. The martini was one of the best I’ve ever had, and the seasonal specials were creative and delicious. The live piano music elevated the night even further. It was the perfect backdrop—never overpowering, always enhancing. Whether you’re seated at the bar or tucked into one of the velvet banquettes, you feel like you’re part of something special. Bemelmans isn’t just a bar—it’s an experience. It’s ideal for a romantic evening, a classy night out with friends, or simply treating yourself to something timeless. Pricey? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

Classic NYC Cocktails in Style

By Zanderzaidan |

We stopped in at Bemelmans during the day before the dress code kicked in, and I’m glad we did. The atmosphere is steeped in history, with the murals and live piano setting the tone perfectly. The drinks were excellent—my dirty martini (served with a sidecar) was one of the best I’ve had. That said, be prepared: drinks are very expensive, even by Manhattan standards. It’s not really the kind of spot where you’ll spend the entire evening unless you’re ready to splash out, but for a single cocktail and the experience, it’s absolutely worth it. The only downsides were the crowded seating, with tables crammed a bit too close together, and the dress code inconsistency. We’d made the effort in the sweltering heat, but plenty of others clearly hadn’t. Knowing that, I might have dressed down for comfort. Still, a New York institution and one I’d happily return to. A quintessential New York moment that blends history, art, and a touch of indulgence.

This is a great place to go to have a drink and take in the historic ambience. The drawings on the wall are an added bonus

Table for five, my grandchildren and me sharing December Tea in Bemelman's Bar. Beautiful experience exquisitely curated for children. Highly recommend.

Very Good Wine List, Professional Service, Good Music

A great place to relax after a day in the city. It's more than a bar, it's an experience. One of those places on your world bar list to visit like the Ritz or Harry's...

Second time...

By tylercon |

We were staying just across the road at The Surrey Hotel and though we would try our luck again at getting a table...After walking past Woody Allen just leaving Bemelman’s we caught the trio in a break so there were a few tables to choose from...moments later the bar was packed..such an iconic New York upper east side experience...highly recommend a visit here...

New Tradition

By Ericabo7 |

A stop at this bar on future visits to NYC will surely be a new tradition for us. Since we were staying at the hotel, we had to try out the storied basement jazz bar. It was packed, the people were friendly, the drinks were excellent, and the music was flowing. The bartender was nice enough to hold a seat for us after standing by the bar for about a half hour until something opened up- great service. Classic atmosphere with interesting people to chat up. We will definitely be back.

New York I on

A fabulous bar on the upper east side. Entertainment each evening is wonderful. It is expensive after 9 pm with a cover charge. Nonetheless still an exquisite place to enjoy music and a cocktail. Unbeatable ambiance.

Classic New York Bar

By alecbowers |

Bemelmans is incredible. The drinks and food are, of course, spectacular. The service is spot-on and ultra attentive. One of my favorite parts of Bemelmans is the people you meet. It's very private, but at the same time, there are always interesting and excellent people passing through. We had many fantastic conversations with people we met here. I like to work in the bar, as it's a good place to be productive and they make everything very comfortable. Highly recommend this place!

Just a classic...

Excellent cocktails, excellent jazz...not a fan of having a cover charge, and the drinks are a bit pricey...but it's NY, what can you do. Worth the trip just to see the wall coverings...also love the chips

The wall paintings are fabulous, whimsical and worth the trip!

Enjoy an evening here with friends. the bartender makes a great martini and the elegance of the room is transporting to another era!

Wanted to like it but not impressed

By Emyboston |

Went in late afternoon so not too busy. Waiter was pleasant but the food mediocre. Drinks expensive which we don't mind but manager was a bit rude. Old, dark and dated, may be ok if you are there for the music later but overall disappointed. Would not return since there are better options nearby.

Nice spot for drinks amd music

By granmab |

we visited over New Years Eve and stopped into the bar before the Steve Tyrell show. Jazz music was good. very.crowded...15.00 cover charge to sit at the bar with a drink...35.00 cover charge to sit at a table.

No question … best Bar in NYC

By RB242 |

Wow … I have to admit that we have been to many Bars in NYC over the past decades. But this is truly the best. Super professional staff. Less touristy. Great atmosphere. Great choices on the wine and cocktail list. Our new favorite!!

Fantastic cocktails

This is one of the best cocktails I had in New York, authentic place, very busy but warm and cosy atmosphere, very professional and friendly service. So comfortable, you can't have only one drink!

Profiles in Professionalism

By Tom |

I stopped by Bemelman's at lunchtime with my family on a hot August afternoon for some refreshments (mostly I wanted to show my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter the marvelous Madeline murals). As our bartender Albert was setting down glasses of water, I clumsily and much to my embarrassment, spilled my glass across the beautiful wooden table. Albert quickly, and without a word, wiped the table dry and poured a new glass of water. Like nothing had happened. A true Profile in Courtesy and Professionalism. Thanks for turning the moment into a pleasant memory for all. See you next time (more carefully).

Unfriendly Barman & Over Priced

By John |

We went for a drink at the Bemelmans Bar late afternoon on a Friday. It is small and our first impression was good. Very cosy and charming. The walls are covered in cartoon type drawings. We ordered our drinks at the bar. The bar man was unfriendly and borderline rude. The drinks were OK but totally over priced. The bar feels a bit run down on closer inspection. I would avoid this place to be honest. The tipping in NY is now so ridiculous too. 15, 18 or 22% is automatically calculated everywhere in NY these days. Don’t be afraid to give zero and you decide any tip! Don’t be intimidated to follow what is proposed. This horrible tipping for everything mentality is a real turnoff and out of control.

Bemelman's Bar

Great bar with evening piano entertainment and delightful cocktails and snacks. The bar manager Javier Martinez is the best - handsome, polite and very classy. We did not stay in the hotel but he arranged a tour of the hotel for us and it lived up to its reputation

A classic and a favorite

Our favorite Upper East Side bar. As classic as we've found. Love everything about this elegant establishment. Worth a trip to the city to savor the atmosphere and the music.

Great place

By ObserverGuy |

Great bar to have a drink and light fare with friends. Our group have martinis and old fashioneds and everyone enjoyed themselves. Yes a little cramped and a little loud, perfect for a quintessential bar. Don’t forget to take a look at the walls painted Bemelman

A MUST FOR MADELEINE LOVERS GROWING UP

By delospoppy |

A great cozy bar to go for a drink and see the murals on the walls by Ludwig Bemelmans of Madeleine and animals celebrating in Central Park. A New York landmark. One of the best sidecars I ever had.

A Classic!

It's what you imagine "old" NYC was all about...loaded with charm and atomsphere. The bar and tables fill quickly so get there early if you want to sit. Drinks are on the expensive side, be prepared. A well healed crowd so dress the part!

Historical Bar

By Fshah |

We came here as it's listed as one of the top bars in NYC. I will admit that the service and ambiance were excellent and it totally makes sense why it gets labeled a top bar. The ambiance is very posh and upscale. The decor is very classy but also unique as it Bemelman's art. The service is excellent as everyone there is very kind. The day we went, there was only one bartender/server and the poor guy was so busy but still would stop by as much as they could. The bar also gives you little snacks with your drink and they were delicious. The drinks in my opinion were pretty average - the same as all other upscale cocktail bars but obviously not as good as some of NYC's famous speakeasies such a Death & Co. or PDT. The price was also pretty steep for a drink, however, given the bar, I guess that part should have been expected.

Finally made it here

Stopped in late afternoon after having wanted to see the paintings on the walls for years. It is not in a location I frequent. Classy bar that gets packed despite not being in a high work area. Prices are fairly high even in non live entertainment hours but are very good and come with delicious mixed nuts.

Marvelous

We had a lovely dinner at Bemelmans Bar last week after spending several hours at a wonderful exhibit of Greek art downtown. The champagne was cold and piercing, and the nuts, crackers and chips -- all standard issue here -- enhanced the champagne perfectly. The oysters were absolutely perfect this night -- sometimes they are a bit off but not tonight. We enjoyed the piano playing from the parlor room next to the bar - it is usually too loud inside for us. Attentive service, great food and wine, excellent company -- a perfect NYC afternoon and evening.
