A winner, as always

By Oliver S |

Hofbrauhous, the famous Munich beer house has been a feature of Midtown for several years now. Located one flight above street level on Third Ave, it's a continuous joy to visit. Whether you're tasting the yummy sausages accompanied by Sauerkraut and potatoes, or just sipping the big mugs with delightful beer, you are guaranteed to have some really good time. **

Excellent for drinks.

By Zack B |

This is an amazing drinking spot , good choice of German beers and everything youll expect from Oktoberfest.service is very good, but the food wasn't that great that's why I give it 3stars. I order the deep fried pickals , they were very greasy and over cooked , the pork shank isn't what I was expecting. When I went to the Oktoberfest the braised pork knuckle was soft and sticky and full of flavour. Here it was very crusty like it had been deep fryed and wasn't very pleasant.overall I love this place as a watering hole but not for eating.

Just like home!

My husband and I recently moved back to the US from Germany. We have been to the original Hofbrau House in Munich. We were missing Germany and decided to visit the restaurant during our NYC getaway. My husband was delighted to get a dunkel beer and curry wurst. I got the cordon blu schnitzel. Both were just like back in Germany. His waffle fires were not like the pommes frites we would get with curry wurst, but we're still good. My German potato salad was authentic tasting. The bench tables, decor, even down to the waitresses wearing dirndls made us feel at home. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants the German food experience. Except American football was on tv instead of European football (soccer).

A Bavarian Escape in the Middle of NYC!

By cfpsu1 |

Once you reach the top of the stairs and enter the Bierhaus you are instantly swept away from the busy NYC atmosphere outside! Multiple times during our visit I did a double take when I realized I was still in the city, because of the authentic décor and atmosphere of the room. We had the opportunity to visit for lunch one Saturday and had a great experience. The restaurant was not crowded and we were able to chat and relax while enjoying our German food and beverages. I can understand how it could be noisy during a busy evening crowd with music, but at lunch time it is a perfect spot to grab a bite to eat. We sampled several dishes during our visit: The Allgäuer Kässpatzen (Spätzle and red onions with melted gouda cheese, topped with fried onions and bacon) was delicious! The currywurst was very tasty and reminded me of something I had years ago at a SchnellImbiss. My wife had the Haus Grilled Cheese (Toasted bread served with cheddar cheese, Black Forest Ham, bacon and sauerkraut) which she thoroughly enjoyed! Both entrees came with waffle fries, which was different for a German restaurant, but they were delicious!! Some of the best waffle fries I have eaten. The BH only serves Hofbrau beer, which if totally fine by me! It has been many years since I have had a a HB Dunkel on draft! Wow how I have missed this!! My wife enjoyed a nice warm “cider”, since it was February! Overall the service was friendly and attentive. I will definitely visit again to sample some of their other menu items and maybe try Das Boot (JK).

Fun dinner out!

By Laura In Maine |

Despite not having a reservation on a Saturday night, they were able to seat us! A party of 6! Loved the food and the atmosphere. Unfortunately for one member of our party, the gluten free options were limited. Live music and a lively atmosphere. Very very loud but it’s the vibe they’re going for. Don’t go here for an intimate date night.

Dinner

We were very excited for an authentic German Beer Hall experience ! This restaurant has so much potential to be just that. However, it is unreasonably loud. And the music is not German. A few easy changes they could make would make all the difference. Get an oompah band or at least play the music over the speakers. Having said that, the food & service were stellar which is why I gave it 4 stars. Food was traditional & delicious!

Lots of fun

By Jon S |

It has a great, pretty authentic German feel, waitresses in authentic Bavarian garb, and some authentic food and drinks, plus a nice outdoor terrace, and the main dining room has two big skylights, which is pretty cool. They have polka music one night a week, and jazz and swing dancing on other nights. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

Looks likes a real German bar. Except for the tv's...

By Vincent S |

Nice bar, I would never have expected this in the center of NYC. Too bad for all the TV's. You will never see this in Germany. Great food and beer, friendly staff.

Disappointing!

By TweetyLover |

Atmosphere and decor similar to beer halls in Munich Germany. Beer hall atmosphere with it being one large room draped with Bavarian flags. Seating is long wooden communal tables with benches. Servers wore traditional dirndls. Small outdoor balcony where apparently one can smoke. Band playing the night we were there - jazz music rather than the German oompah band music that I expected. Small area by the band where a few couples danced. Music so loud that it was impossible to even carry on a conversation with the person sitting NEXT to you or to hear the server's questions. Food is mediocre. Schnitzel was dry and overcooked, the German potato salad was served cold and I have always had it served hot, even in Germany. Good variety of wursts. Beer selection and giant pretzels are good. Had a two for one offer for the apple strudel which was mediocre. Reasonable prices for NYC. Would not go back.

Lost its identity.

By marathon235 |

It's a big open 'biergarten' feeling restaurant. Long wooden tables. Big bar area. Tuesday was trivia night. Also live music. Music is some german style but then some covers. Sound was too loud, can't hear conversation, even furthest away table. Food was not good. The sausage bladder hat too much soggy sauerkraut. Sausages were soaking up the sauerkraut juice. Should be served separately. Pork shoulder cooked the wrong way, couldn't cut through the stale (should be crispy) fat rind, and meaty part was too dry, too chewy. (But also knife not sharp enough). Again, with more sauerkraut. No bread served with the pork shoulder, no horseradish. Pretzel has to be ordered separately. which tasted a bit too chewy. Dessert was stale tasting cake, apple strudel was tasty but whip cream was not good. But 2 for 1 dessert offer. - The beer was good. Original beer and dark beer has good flavor. Service was friendly from the waitresses, but service cleaning the table was annoying and not attentive. Overall, since food was not good, music too loud (please have music without the amp!) cheapened atmosphere.

If you want German in NY go elsewhere.

By Tampa Brian |

This is a very nice space and the beer is authentic. The food is ok. I went looking for real German food but came away disappointed. It was OK but I will not go back.

Good foor and beer

By jrpard0 |

Went last week with a friend for lunch. Beers and food are great. Enjoyed the giant pretzel. Live band was good too.

Very poor

By David B |

We booked to eat here while in New York and we were very disappointed no atmosphere the food was very poor mine wasn't bad but the other 5 people left theirs the beer was ok though but we still left after eating not leaving a tip the place didn't warrant one For a German themed bar you would expect German themed music with a good German atmosphere but no it lacked atmosphere so we would not recommend it or be going back my friend who loves Germany and German bars was so disappointed he couldn't apologise enough as it was him who booked it So it's a big thumbs down from us 👎🙁

Ear-bleedingly loud

By CathyWithaC77 |

I reserved for our extended family of 7 through and was very happy I did. Though I could see that, in general, large parties could be easily seated because of the long, wooden communal tables, the place was packed at 7:30 on a Thursday night. The live music might have been enjoyed if not at a level to make my head explode. We all had to point to the menu to order, because our server could not possibly hear us. An upside, though, was that before we spoke, each of us had to decide if what we planned to say was worth the effort. Not surprisingly (if you knew us), usually it wasn't. Six of our meals came out together. Despite repeated entreaties, my niece's cheeseburger did not arrive until the rest of us (with her kind permission) had finished. Upon my husband's request, it was comped. My spicy sausage with sauerkraut was fine, but the German potato salad was served as a cold scoop, not a warm, vinegary delight.

A Little German Bierhaus in New York.

By RonTravelWorld |

You go in and think you found a German Beer Haus. What you found is a German style beer pub that has some food to offer. It has been around for years. You climb the stairs and find yourself that is not what you would see walking in to the beer halls in Berlin. This is a combination of German, Beer, Food and a gathering of people getting together to talk and drink. We went in expecting the Haus and found a beer bar with large tables and people talking with a band was playing, or trying to with all the people talking. Once we got a table that we were told to leave by 8pm since another couple booked it for that time, we sat down and decided what to try. We ended up with a Jagerschnitzel (which is a pork schnitzel), along with warm potato salad, red cabbage and cucumber salad. This warm and what to expect even if the pork was a bit stiff. We also had a reuben sandwich we ordered, The rye bread was nice. The reuben was a good size and perfect to enjoy. It was served with potato chips made in the back. Along with this we had a nice larger stein for beer to enjoy with it. The beer was good. A little cold since int he US we like our beer cold and not at room temperature as they drink in Germany. Took a little adjusting to this, but not a problem. For dessert we had a strudel and ice cream. This was good by itself. It was warm and fresh. Ideal way to end the meal. Overall, it is not a bad place to be. The food was fine. The staff was nice. The atmosphere was not a traditional German Beer Hall you have in Berlin. Anyway, we were out of their by 8pm for the next people to sit at the table we sat at. Danke.

Great place to eat and drink

By Ddb2422 |

We tried to get a seat at this place four times in a week and it is always packed. We were lucky to get a spot on our last day in NYC and man it was worth the wait. Great beer from all over Germany and excellent food. I had the cucumber salad and pork Schnitzel. Great atmosphere and grips service. Reasonable prices for the food and beer.

Disappointing - rude service.

By SammyMustDie |

Dropped in last night for a quick beer and small bite to eat in advance of coming back another night for a full meal. Sat at the bar, good beer and spicy sausage. My colleague happened to mention that it was really hot at the bar and there was hot air blowing from somewhere just to be told "well you can always stand outside". Very abrupt and rude response and a real shame as I wanted to pop back in later this week!

Good Beer in NYC

By eLeCtRo69 |

Last year we have been to the Bierhaus NYC to have some good german food and beer. the Service was very friendly and the dishes tasted good. And of course you have to try the good Hofbräuhaus Bier. In the venening there is also a little band who plays german songs.

Food was good, service was not

By Seaside255879 |

I made a reservation for my 50th Birthday. Our waitress wanted a credit card to open a tab, but we were there for dinner. I’ve never been asked to open a tab before. We ordered our food and were told to pay before it arrived....which was strange, and then our waitress ignored us the rest of the time. We enjoyed our food, but the service was pretty poor. I guess you only get good service if you open a tab and drink.

Company Oktoberfest 2018

By Caren J |

fun place to host an event, good food, nice assortment of beer to choose from, live music in the evening, balcony which has the view of third avenue

Fabulous service and food

By BF61 |

We had a wonderful lunch today. Our server Bonnie was so fabulous! She gave us some great ideas about what to order. We got the beircheese dip and chips (really thick sliced fried potatoes) and 1 pretzel which were fabulous. Then we had the currywurst and the grilled cheese (with ham) and both came with a side of waffle fries and all were great. THEN we got dessert which was bogo! So we got the apple strudel and the vanilla sundae. It was all delicious. Again, Bonnie our server was the best! She was on top of everything and made the whole experience even better!!

Awesome German Restaurant/bar

By Stefani H |

Never would I think I’d find a German restaurant in Midtown. And a good one too! The chips (which are like roasted sliced potatoes I think) and bier cheese dip is to die for. Jager schnitzel was also very good. While I’m not a beer drinker many people were there enjoying the numerous offerings. I went with my college age daughter. Didn’t see any kids. If you like German food you should definitely go!

Nice feel, great beer!

By RSoxFamily2011 |

We went in Nov 2016 and found the place to be very friendly. Having been in Munich, it was nice to see the decorating was very close to the various 'houses' at Oktoberfest. They had the litre beer and then some of the chicken and potatoes. All were done nicely. The servers wore traditional drindels and were very attentive -- especially Danielle!! Very enjoyable atmosphere, though it was a bit odd to have a band playing folk rock music, when we expected German/Bavarian folk music. But overall, a great visit!

Beer is good, food is just ok

By BelikinBeer |

After being at the Hofbrau in Heidelberg last year my expectations were pretty high. Hofbrau is of course a brewery so the beer was good the three different Schnitzel dishes had the look and flavor but the pork Schnitzel were tough. Almost tasted like the meat was microwaved (that's an opinion versus knowing for sure.) The staff was attentive and on top of their game. I guess it is always a challenge to take foreign ideas and Americanize them...

Yummy Schnitzel

By Wetherstone P |

This restaurant was near our hotel and I was craving schnitzel. We (my husband & I, our son, his wife and two sons) had arrived in the city early on Good Friday and were walking around and ready for lunch. The restaurant was not too busy so we were seated and served quite quickly. The boys had never had schnitzel, German potato salad or red cabbage salad before - both liked the schnitzel & potato salad (the cabbage not so much). The other adults ordered a wurst sampler platter to share and had plenty. Server was very pleasant and the decor was interesting. There is a steep staircase as it is on the second floor!

God awful, deafening and terrible unless you're already drunk

By sepowell1 |

Booked a party of 12 here for a reunion and a bit of themed fun. Big mistake. The music was so loud you couldn't hear the waiters and vice versa. Eventually they switched to a live band which was even louder but also polka themed. The waitress had to come back to the table 3 times until she could hear us. The smoking space was enclosed next to the main hall (is that even legal?) and fumes definitely seeped into the restaurant. What could have been a fun night out drinking turned into a desperate yelling match to order off the menu. We ended up calling the Cornerstone Bar from the bathroom to see if they could make last minute space for all of us and left .

Good beer but....

By Nancy S |

Had friends visiting and knew they would like the assortment of beers. But it was so noisy, both when the live band was playing as well as after, that we had to leave.

Good beer, average service

By c0achjj |

We heard some interesting music while walking down 3rd street, looked up, and saw people sitting on a covered balcony with beer flights. Up the stairs we went, got a couple of stools and sat outside with some happy travelers. I ordered the flight of beers, which included the Sommer brau, along with their regular dunkel, dunkel weiss, weiss, and lager beers. It took 20 minutes to arrive. We ordered some spaetzle, which never arrived and had to be taken off of our bill. That was OK, as we really just wanted a beer. The flight was 11.00, and I didn't order a liter (at 16.00) of my favorite (dunkel weiss) as the band had stopped playing and our waitress was nowhere to be found. This could be a really great spot as it sits catty-corner to two English pubs - I was thinking pub crawl - but no one likes to wait this long. Beer was quite good, tho.

Munich in Manhattan

By Brendan C |

I stopped in here with friends for a couple lunchtime beers and a snack. Unlike some others' experience, it was fairly quiet which was fine. But it looks like a small Bavarian beer hall and I'd imagine the atmosphere is good when it's fuller (if the music isn't too loud for the space). The beer was tasty, Currywurst was good, and Kasspatzen (sort of German mac and cheese) was excellent. Service was friendly and quick. I hadn't planned on going to a German place in NY but one of my pals found it and I'm glad he did.

Typical "Beer Hall" layout

By Ed M |

Not surprisingly lots of choices for beer in very large mugs. The cuisine is certainly German with typical choices. All the meals were tasty and no surprises, good or bad.

Good for Octoberfest

By StephenCross |

Bierhaus is a fun place on 3rd Ave. upstairs and a big bar and restaurant. Busy for a Sunday afternoon and music was a little loud but good atmosphere.

Bierhaus Bungles

By DeeA |

We made reservations online for 6:30pm on a Saturday night. Arriving approximately an hour early after a day at the Intrepid museum, we expected to sit at the bar and have a drink until our table was ready. Our table was available, as were many others. My husband's pork shank was delicious and he ate every bite! Unfortunately, my food was overcooked and quite dry. Before I had finished eating, our server brought our check. She never asked if we wanted a second beer or cider. No mention of dessert? Odd way to end a meal.

Drinks good, food not good at all

By Der Tester |

Atmosphere: The atmosphere of the Bayerischer Hof is reminiscent of a cozy German restaurant. Rustic wooden furniture and warm lighting create a welcoming and authentic environment. Service: Friendly and attentive. The staff strives to give guests a pleasant experience. Drinks: The beer selection is remarkable and offers a good selection of German beers, which are freshly tapped and served at a good temperature. The Hefeweizen in particular was a highlight of the evening. Food: Unfortunately, the food was a disappointment. The schnitzel was dry and not very aromatic. The potato salad was inedible and lacked the usual freshness. The red cabbage was far too sweet and was more reminiscent of a dessert than a side dish. Only the cucumber salad was convincing, it was crisp and well seasoned. Overall, the chef seemed to have little experience with German cuisine. Conclusion: Bayerischer Hof offers a pleasant atmosphere and a good selection of beers, but the cuisine leaves a lot to be desired. For an authentic German culinary experience, another restaurant is recommended.

Great German food and drink and SERVICE

By CHURCHGUY |

Excellent service from Konstantin & Julie will be the main reason we will be back. Food and drink were very good but their attentiveness was outstanding!

Great food!

By T D |

We stopped by here for our lunch - while watching a Bundesliga Fussball game (Bayern Muenchen vs. Borussia Dortmund). The Currywurst is one of our favorites - close to Currywurst in Germany. If you follow our food blog - you know by now that we grew up in Germany and eat German food whenever we can find a restaurant that serves it. Stop by here if you're in a mood for sausages while in NYC,

Another Great Visit to Bierhaus NYC!

By LAMR |

When my sister and I were looking for a place for lunch yesterday, I insisted that she check out Bierhaus—just because it’s such a fun kind of place. I had dubbed this “the Bierhaus in the sky” awhile back after I happened to glance at it from across the street—and I have since been there with friends. I really enjoy this place, and convinced my sister to try it. Mind you, my very refined sister is NOT a beer and schnitzel kind of girl, but she truly loves a fun atmosphere! We were greeted very nicely and seated quickly. We both ordered beer, which, again, is not typical for her, but the beer was delicious! I ordered the grilled vegetable sandwich and she ordered the grilled vegetable salad. Our food was delicious, and the service was excellent. The grilled vegetable sandwich consists of a tasty potato pancake and grilled vegetables on a roll, served with potato soup. The salad was a good size—lots of veggies, but, alas, no potato pancake. We both ordered the beet salad on the side. At lunchtime it is quieter, so you can converse and really take in the atmosphere. It was very ,very busy and it appeared that everyone, tourist and local alike, was having a good time. This is a theme restaurant—mostly with long tables and benches, made to look like a German bierhaus. There is a balcony area, better for drinking than eating. Food choices are good, beer choices are good, prices are good, and atmosphere is fun. Come with the right expectations, and I think you will enjoy it here.

Excellent place , Julie is awesome ! Great and fast service Will come back soon for more beer Food is great too

Evening meal

By Berglas71 |

We decided to try this place for a change from the usual sports bar/ italian food of NY. It certainly was different! Access is up a set of stairs into a room which is well set out, the decor and seating looking like a proper alpine German beer house, even the servers were dressed like german bar maids which added a touch of authenticity. The food we ordered tasted really nice with every dish having a German twist to them. If you don't like German food you might struggle to find something to eat. The beer was good. The servers were polite, prompt and well presented.

Not as Anticipated....

By sanibelsandals |

With great expectations we hiked through the rain to Hofbrau Bierhaus for some authentic German Beer, Food & Music, but were very disappointed. The service and beer were excellent, Huge Pretzel appetizer with spicy and sweet mustard very good, dinner was awful, had to send mine back- Rueben Sandwich tasted like boiled rubber, couldn't bite into it and it was flavorless, chose to share hubby's just ok very bland sausage and kraut. There just wasn't any flavor to the food. What could be a great beer hall is missing the atmosphere and authentic German food. I didn't come here to listen to 80's music or a 3 pc band that tries to play 80's music, blue grass and I don't know what else - it all sounded the same, 2 guitars & a sax....there should be authentic Bavarian music! Not one German song or Polka in a couple hours, boo. We've been to Hofbrau Pittsburgh, Las Vegas ( a few times) and to Germany.....guess we expected too much from NYC.

Great time during Octoberfest

By Chaz B |

Came here for a work outing and we had a blast. Not sure about the food (only had a pretzel, which was good), but the beer is excellent and served in large portions. The night we were there they also had a live band that got us all whipped into a singing and dancing frenzy, it was definitely a good time. Very crowded, very loud, lots of fun.

Don't waste your money

By Gail B |

My husband likes German food so we decided to give it a try. Definately would not return. Go for the dollar pizza it's much better. I ordered their hot dogs with French fries. The hot dogs were over cooked and dried out. It looked like they were on the grill much to long. My husband said his sandwich was ok but the soup was much better. Definately will not return.

A Very Fun Place

By NorthernNJTraveller |

This place is exactly as you envision it. There is only an upstairs and there is only one big room (plus a little balcony) and if you want to have a good time, this is the place to go. The food was very good as was the beer and you don't need to back up a Brinks truck to spend a few hours there. We had a great time.

Fun group outing

By paul-delaware |

Enjoyed the food and drinks as part of a group outing. Was a bit loud for my taste but the beer was good, the service was efficient and the vibe was fun. Especially liked the outdoor perch overlooking 3rd Avenue.

Great beer and good food

By Rehsinup19 |

I came here for lunch and enjoyed a great beer and good lunch. The Oktoberfest beer was a delicious amber beer and went well with the Wiener Schnitzel I had for lunch. The texture of the food was tender and had good flavor. This is a nice option for good German food and great beer in Manhattan.

Fifty fifty

By pepeto |

The beer is very good, original. I was disappointed by the food. Small portions and my pork shank was dry and warmed again so really bad. Schnitzel was good bad small piece. Service was ok, but next time I would drink only.

On 3rd Ave...Wow!

By Charles D |

Great place! Excellent authentic German Food and atmosphere complete with a live band! Food was great had fried pickles (new item), pork shank with red cabbage and great German potato salad. And of course German beer. Great service and your not rushed in and out you stay at your table till it's time to go. Prices are extremely reasonable for the quality and amount of food you get. Go there and enjoy you won't be disappointed.

Overseeing the Avenue

By Oliver S |

I'm not big on German food. But German beer, that's another thing! The place is not much different from the mother restaurant in Munich: same long wooden communal tables, same huge steins, same delectable brew. Choice of several of the creations of this venerable beer house. I like to sit on the Balcony overseeing the Avenue, order a pint and watch the traffic below – it's a genuine portrait of what every day life is in New York City. Service is prompt for the most part and usually friendly, prices are acceptable.

Nice German place

By superbee361 |

Not a big German food fan but their menu was somewhat impressive. I really came for the beer. I tried all five of the house brews and found them all satisfying. Get the sampler and find your favorite. Potato chips and cheese appetizer was filling and tasty! Not to overpriced - all menu items were reasonable.

Great little find!

By Amanda6218 |

My sister and I came across this place by chance because it was close to the hotel we were staying at. Good service and great food. I recommend the beer flight!

A little piece of Bavaria in NYC

By Bertiebear2014 |

Excellent german Biers! Unlike most of the US! Refreshing to be able to taste a proper lager in New York City other than the usual BudMillerCoors lite! Just a pity they didn’t redistribute to lots of other bars in the city. Authentically decorated and cosy.

No hassle Oktoberfest celebration

By BillDoctor |

Easy reservations and not too crowded Sat. evening. Service is very good with cheerful pretty waitresses. There are few German restaurants anymore unfortunately because there can be good food. Here they offered many entrees with multiple variations of schnitzel and good red cabbage and spaetzle. Also good band from Munich.

German place to go in NYC!

By Rafael N |

Great beers! Great prices! Can’t beat Happy Hour! Ask for Ben at the bar! Outstanding atmosphere and service! The manager went above and beyond to get Champions League on the TV’s. Can’t wait to be back. 5 stars!

Great for Fussball games! Delicious Currywurst!

By T D |

We went to the Hofbrau in NYC for the Euro cup game Germany/ Deutschland vs. Poland. Make sure to me early - if you want to watch a Germany game - since it gets crowded very quickly. We tried the Currywurst - which was pretty good (compared to other German Restaurants located in the US). The Nuernberger wurst could have been pan fried a little bit longer though. Definitely worth stopping by for a Game or for German drinks and foods.

Good beer and great service.

By #FCW |

Good find in the heart of Manhattan. Good beer in proper litre glasses. Didn't have the food but all looked pretty good. 2 pint boots of beer are a must along with the 5 taster flight.

Cravings satisfied and enjoyed thoroughly!!

By CoachK2525 |

Having never been to Germany I always want to try German Restaurants...so glad we did!... Beer is cold crisp and tasty and food was on point and plentiful and affordable. If in area again will be back!

Nice atmosphere. No service... At all.

By Jack T |

First, there seems to be some confusion regarding the name, as the sign on the building says "Hofbrau Munchen", yet when I looked for the restaurant on the internet it seems to actually be called Bierhaus NYC. They really ought to go with one or the other. I've been to the Hofbrauhaus in Las Vegas, which is an exact copy of the real Hofbrauhaus in Munich, not only the food but right down to the exact dimensions and appearance of the restaurant itself. When I saw the name Hofbrau Munchen on this restaurant, I assumed it was at lease similar although it's location in New York City requires it to be scaled down and wedged into a very small typically NY space. Overall I liked the atmosphere, but when I sat down at a table around midnight on Thursday, November 9th, nobody approached me to offer a menu or get me a drink or anything of the sort. I did see two waitresses, one wearing the traditional German beer-wench Dirndls, standing and talking to each other at the end of the bar. When it became clear that neither was going to come over and offer me a menu or a drink, I got up and walked over to them. I asked for a menu, and one of them handed me a menu then promptly turned around and resumed her conversation with the other waitress. I went back and sat down at my table with the menu, and waited for one of them, or anybody really, to come and ask what I would like to eat or drink. It never happened. The waitresses were too engrossed in their own personal conversations to be bothered to wait on me, so I simply got up and left without ordering anything. Very disappointing.

Dinner with Colleagues

By jfgaff |

While working and staying in Queens, we went into Manhattan for a casual dinner. My colleague opted for German fare. Service was friendly and prompt, food was plentiful but average quality. We sat at the long bierhaus table with another party -- as expected. The band was fine -- but the set was too long as it provided for no conversation over dinner. It was fine, but not a return destination for me. NYC has too many other options!

The poor staff

By Emily V |

Don’t know what happened, but we visited on Sunday Oct 7th. Night started out great, beer, pretzels really good service. Then the rush happened, and looking around there were only 2 waitresses for a room and outside deck full of customers. They did their best, the bartender came to the rescue and even a kitchen worker started running food. My question was were was a manager? All employees tried to keep it together but I could tell they were stressed! 2 guys outside left cause no one cleared the area and they waited but there simply was not enough staff to help. Shame, beer was good, but not at the expense of had working people. Get it together owners or managers.

Quaint little bar

By Keshia W |

Stopped in for a quick drink and a snack while waiting for our reservation at The Caldron upstairs. It had an old school feel that was so cool. The pretzel and cold beer was just enough.

Noisy location - Easy food - German soccer

By Nicolaas NYC |

Great place along noisy 3rd Av. for easy simple (fried) German food and esp. German/Bavaria white craft beers. Menu is simple, no big suprises, price quality is mediocre. Do not expect fast service at your table; in the meantime you can watch German soccer :-)) ...

Great Place!

By KelNY2000 |

We enjoyed the beer, pretzels and dinner. We brought our 7-year-old with us and were happy that they had a children's menu. The beer was delicious! We had a great time. It was a perfect place to have a beer and yet bring our daughter.

Burppp all the way!

By Ravi C |

Great drinks, good food and awesome ambience! Went late afternoon and ordered their 2 ltr. boot glass German beer. I loved the service and the ambience was just great! A cool place to hangout, enjoy the sports on TV along with your friends!

Way too loud

By Wawafont |

I know what everyone is going to say, you went on a Saturday night and it was Santacon, however that doesn’t excuse some of the issues. First of all, a band was playing and it was SO loud. I couldn’t even talk to my husband who was sitting across the table. We had to text each other. I appreciate music, but it really could have been turned down a few notches and it would have still be loud but a decent volume. The waitress was a space cadet. There were times we didn’t see her for a while. It took an hour to get our food. I was beginning to think she never put the order in. The food was good and so was the beer. That is the only reason I rated three stars. The bathrooms were horrific. I told the hostess and she shrugged her shoulders and said oh sorry. Not what I expected. How about I’ll tell the manager right away?! Won’t rush back here.

Feel At Home

By Sharkbite |

Entering Bierhaus NYC feels like coming home - Great atmosphere; great people; great food; and of course great beer. Hostess is super friendly, the manager knows how to lead, and the entire teams strives to make a great experience for all. A must visit in NYC.

Outstanding!

By Joel S |

Had a great time, great spot, food was really good, great beer of course. A bit crowded and a surprisingly young crowd, but a great experience

Awesome place

By bfrank815 |

The beer is good. The food is good. The atmosphere is awesome! The biercheese dip is so good you could eat it with a spoon. The beer comes in .5Lt ($9), 1Lt ($18), or a 2Lt boot ($36). The Shotski is also a fun add at 4 shots for $20.

Lunch

By O M |

Had lunch there. Over all enjoy both food and beer. Food was good, servers were nice and helpful. I really like the atmosphere and setting, great place for a happy hours.

A must - If you like beer, German Food and a fun atmosphere

By Roger M |

My wife and I stayed across the street and saw this place hopping every night. We stopped buy to check it out and we were surprised! The place is Ockoberfest every day! A nice bar, Large sized table area and an outside area. A large menu looked awesome, we were there just for beers and ended up getting a Pretzel. They had a nice brunch menu. A good place for friends, couples, solo, family. A must if you are into German or just a great atmosphere. We want to go back.

A place where overcharging customers is considered "normal"

By NP |

I visited this place with a group of eight friends, mostly foreigners visiting the U.S. as guests of the United States Department of State. Our checks were between $25-45. Two days later, we check our bank accounts and 6 of us have been overcharged. I signed a $25 check, and was charged and additional $308.66. A colleague got his check of $36 two hours after I left and he was not only charged the $36 he owed twice, but he also got charged the same additional $308.66. Yet another one was charge $128 twice and so on. I managed to get my money back as I had an American credit card and was able to contest the charge. My colleagues had government issued debit cards that were only good for the duration of their stay and basically, altogether, lost around $800. The manager we talked to told us that "this [their system overcharging customers] was normal and happened all the time", and that it was "too bad that they [my colleagues] were going to lose their money". I'm pretty sure there is not a single place in this country where charging people over $300 on a $25 check is or should be considered "normal". I say BIERHAUS NYC, NEVER AGAIN!

Great FUN on Tuesdays and Wednesdays band and food

By cometman |

The food was good but what really made the night fun was the band the Polka Brothers, they did the greatest polkas including newer music and really made the night fun. I had the wurst platter, pretzels, chicken dinner, schnitzel fingers and the streudel with ice cream, MMMMM good.

Bavarian Hospitality

By Oliver S |

Go in the middle of the afternoon, when it's almost empty, except for the occasional German tourist or salesman from New Jersey. Grab a seat out on the terrace overlooking the avenue and order your beer in a huge house-branded stein. Go for the schnitzel if you are hungry and spend the next hour or so supervising traffic underneath you and enjoying great beer. Lovely place, especially when not crowded. Service is great, too!

Birthday celebration

By Ren1971 |

Excellent place for BEER and a pretzel. It was 2/14 and it wasn't crowded so we had no problem finding a seat and not being crowded, feeling rushed and not able to hear each other. Would absolutely return!

Wunderbar place to meet up with friends or family

By mammamaria_12 |

Our 20- and 30- something kids and spouses joined hubby and me for a Sunday birthday lunch. Wonderful vibe, comfortable seating, excellent drinks (Glühwein was the real deal) and nice service. Sunday was not noisy - just right, in fact. The food is good - not gourmet, but good - (large pretzel and apple strudel were terrific) and all in all it was a fantastic few family hours. It's pretty close to Grand Central Station, so great for meeting people coming into the city. Prices very fair - highly recommended.

Fun atmosphere

By SkateGirl314 |

Got a beer flight to try the different beer which were all good. Ordered the pretzel appetizers which was a little disappointed in since it was 3 street pretzels with 3 small dipping sauces nothing too fancy.

Great beer and music

By Traveler |

Had a beer, watched basketball and listened to a coverband via polka style. Which was very amusing. They have a smoking patio on the second floor and good German food from what I saw coming out of the kitchen. Can't go wrong!

Alright food but pricy

By Kariss182 |

After our first day of pounding the streets of NYC we were starving and looking for somewhere unique to pop into for lunch. After lots of searching we decided to try this place. Hopping up the stairs the bar was larger then expected, and the decor was a mixture between traditional German and a sports bar. It was queit when we were there at lunch and the bar was suprisingly light and airy. As a European I can say that it wasn't very authentic but I don't think that really matters. The staff were nice and the food was plentiful. We were both pleased with how generous the portions were, with plenty of deli meats, cheese and dressing filling out the sandwich with the unique German twist of it also including Sauerkraut. It came with waffle fries which we ate with plenty of dipping sauce. It was exactly what we needed after a full day of exploring NYC. However for $17 it was really pricy for the style of food.

Authentic German beer hall

By kagatlin |

Had a quick meal here the other night. Very reminiscent of a typical German beer hall, large tables and fairly loud. The food was very good and the service was very quick and friendly. We would definitely eat here again.

Same great food as in Munich

By skye b |

We are here in Germany and loved it so we’re glad to see it here in NYC. Kids meals were so affordable and the meals were great spent $60 for a meal for 4 with beer in NYC is a great deal. Will be back for sure.

Worth the stair climb!

By Rhiannon Dias |

We were looking for somewhere to grab food & drink.....happy to have climbed those stairs to the top! My mom is German & Hungarian so I grew up eating this type of food so I was looking forward to eating. My boyfriend & I sat at the bar, he ordered a liter of German brew and I ordered a German cider. We were pleased from the start, then came lunch. I ordered Weisswurst, potato salad & sauerkraut - yummy!! My boyfriend ordered the Reuben with potato salad. After we finished lunch, we ordered dessert - well my version, spiced Jagermeister! We bonded with the bartender over music and never wanted to leave. The bar has a stein club & we were envious of their stein locker - I should have taken a picture of that! I'd definitely visit her again, great atmosphere, good food - pretty authentic (well at least with regard to how my mom makes it) and location was nice.

This is a place for drinks, not for food

By folker_lamote |

Have something to eat here only if you want a quick bite, combined with a lot of drinks. Cool place for hanging out.

Authentic German bierhaus!!

By MK330 |

Haven visited Germany a couple of years ago, and in this neighborhood so a number of years, I have always wanted to try Bierhaus NYC.....so finally we did...and were we glad! Very authentic ...food, atmosphere and of course, the beer!!! Yes, very noisy, so you need to be in the 'mood' for festive atmosphere (live band) ....beer..yes the beer: the boot ...and the bier flight! food was excellent: we had the giant pretzel, fried pickles and of course the schnitzel is a must-have! and our all-time fav: the pork shank!! Our waitress was kind enough to forewarn us that we must order the full portion to get the bone and the crackling skin (YES)...so we could thoroughly enjoy our pork shank...thanks Victoria! My son was so impressed that he took his friends there the following weekend! HA.

Terrific German Food and Atmosphere

By pearx4 |

If you love authentic German food, the Hofbrau NYC is a must. Fantastic atmosphere with Oompah band and all makes this a NYC treasure. Great beer and all around wonderful time. Having visited the Hofbrau in Munich, this was a exciting find in the heart of the city. Danielle, our waitress was a delight! This will be a must visit in every future trip to NYC.

okay

By elshacko |

Not really designed to be a German Restaurant, as the meal I had was just okay, kind of bland. It's more like a bar, decorated to look German, that serves expansive beer.

Bavarian Beirhaus in NYC

By Phatbloke |

Stopped here on the way to Grand Central Station for a bite and a beer, a themed restaurant with Bavarian Bar Maids (slightly sexist outfits), the pretzel and cheese dip was lovely, the beer came in steins, all in all what it said on the tin. Mildly disturbed by the electric oompah band but 2 mins from the station.

Excellent beer, extremely noisy

By HollyMuppy |

We got there at 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon. It was busy but we were seated promptly. The table was in the middle of the restaurant and extremely loud so we probably should have asked if there were any less noisy areas. Our waitress was attentive and the service was quick. She actually told us we could have the table until 7:30 so it was nice to know we wouldn’t be rushed. The beers we had were excellent- a hefe weizen, a dunkel, and a flight of 5. The Obatzda with pretzels appetizer was outstanding. The pretzels were soft and warm and the cheese was delicious. The currywurst was good but the potato pancakes were disappointing. We all had schnitzels which we enjoyed. The side dish of red cabbage was very good, the cucumber salad was good but the potato salad had no flavor. We split a German heart cookie which was basically a large gingerbread cookie with whipped cream around it. The cookie was not flavorful. The portions were large and the prices were reasonable for NYC. I would go back but ask if there are any quieter tables.

German beer and a view

By AwayDays_Rich |

Another stop off on the way back to Midtown. Normally I've got a list of potential watering holes for every district but we just took a chance on this one. Well you know the beer will be good and there's plenty of choice so that's a great start. We managed to get a corner seat outside on the veranda so not only did we avoid the noise inside but we could indulge in one of my great pastimes, people watching. We spent a really enjoyable hour here, can't comment on the food though as we didn't sample any.

Great atmosphere

By Claint5 |

This restaurant has a fab atmosphere with live music and costumed staff. We ordered a mixed platter and we weren't disappointed. Order a litre of beer and join in with the songs.

Great beer and wonderful food

By sherihm |

Stopped here for lunch, the beers my husband and I had were delicious and smooth. We had appetizers of pretzel bites (jalapeño/cheddar) & potato cakes. There were only 3 of each and they were very small but the flavor was terrific. $9 each seems steep since I don't live in NYC but caliber of restaurant was very good. My son had a burger he said was excellent and my husband and I shared the portabella sandwhich as we don't eat meat and it was big enough for us to share and delicious. My only sigh comes from paying $90 with tip for 3 people to eat lunch. Great food, great beer, not for budget conscious visitors unless your budget it much better than mine.

Craving German food

By Doreen S |

Overall I would say the food is pretty good, but not over the top excellent. Beef and schnitzel were good. Potatoes were a bit crispy and the spaetzle was a bit more oily than we are used to. I wish they had potato pancakes! Food was good though and satisfied our cravings :)

Meh

By buttercup1211 |

The best dark beer I ever tasted was at the Hofbrau in Munich, so when I heard that there was a Hofbrau in NYC, I was excited. Unfortunately, the beer here does not taste the same as the beer in Munich. The atmosphere wasn’t bad though, there was a live band, and on the Tuesday that we went, they had trivia night, so that was fun. As soon as you sit and order, they ask for a credit card to hold onto, and they only return it to you at the end when you get your bill, even if you are paying cash – that made me a little uncomfortable having my credit card hostage. We didn’t try the food, but everyone seemed to have one of those giant pretzels.

Eating at Bierhaus

By dereksantiago |

Food was good. I had the ribs and fries. The wife had the goulash. My food was very good but the wife did not care much for the beef goulash. The beer and wine was good. Their happy hour is only at the bar. We thought it was wrong if we are going to sit eat dinner and drink and not included in the Happy Hour. There were lots of people at the bar.

Pleeease,try harder

By VWtgGgpvCXER4 |

As most "German" restaurants it fails to meet the standard. A German beer, a German flag and group seating does not make a real German restaurant. Please travel to Germany and taste the food there and then try to copy as best you can, but it would need some effort and love for German food.

Authentic German Bierhaus

By Peter W |

Had some excellent Wursts. Brews. Great service in a true German setting. Recommend everything. Try this different but scenic German restaurant

Good Place for a bit of German experience

By deltahater |

It is part of Hofbrau Muenchen so many of their beers are HB branded. HB is inferior to Paulaner so you wont have the best German beer, but it is definitely acceptable. The food menu is decent and not overpriced for NYC. The food was good and they do have a kids menu. Much to our surprise kids under 10 eat FREE. The service was pleasant and as the afternoon progressed, it got more crowded and more loud, adding to the beerhall experience.

Steps -Worth the Climb

By Past_Master_1992 |

Food was typical German style, with German style beer (not very cold as my wife & I like it. I had a Reuben, she had bratwurst. Better than average food, really enjoyed the beer. Got a soft pretzel until our meal was ready.

More hype of being German

By randykiel23 |

Second story restaurant/bar, selected German Bier and Food assortment. At the time of visit, mid day there were only 2 other guests there. Sports on the TV, not even a German Soccer game, loud Rock music, it felt more like a sports bar then a German Bierhaus. May be at the end of Sept. beginning of Oct. it's alive with some Oktoberfest festivities. Have a Bier and praetzle somewhere else.

Good Beer Selection, Friendly Service

By Cathrab28 |

With my husband being German, he is drawn to any place called a Bierhaus. While I don't drink beer, he was very pleased with their beer selection and I was very pleased with my pretzel! It is located up a flight of stairs and I am not sure if there is another way in. Bathrooms were clean.

Great atmosphere

By E K |

We discovered this place recently and love the atmosphere. It's a decent beer hall for the US (we've been to beer halls in Germany). The beer selections are good. We haven't had their entrees but have had the big pretzel with mustard and cheese - excellent with the beer! We highly recommend coming here.

Lively. Beer House with German Food.

By Andrew H |

About as German as it gets. A ton of meat choices, straightforward German beer option in large servings and the waitresses are straight out of Munich. Fun place. Average food.

Nice evening out

By Voyager190262 |

We found this place by accident but glad we did as the German beer was great! Had a fantastic burger and fries here, there was live music and a brilliant atmosphere. Staff were friendly and in traditional dress. You can sit inside or out on a covered balcony.

Great place for a beer and a snack

By crabbysandy |

Needed an appetizer and a beer, and stumbled across this place near our hotel. Ordered two Dunkels, a large pretzel, and the buffalo cauliflower. The Dunkel beer was good, and oddly the closest thing I could find to a dark beer in this area of NYC (other than Guinness), even at the nearby bars with draft lists. The pretzel was tasty, cannot speak for the cheese dip but I loved the grainy mustard that was served with this. Buffalo cauliflower was not very oily and had good flavor. Food was served quickly at the bar and the service overall was excellent.

Good beer, food not authentic and needs major improvement

By poschwarz |

The appearance and ambience are quite nice and traditional, reminding me of home, giving you an immediate comfortable feeling. Staff is also friendly and nice. The first feeling of consternation is when the waitress askes whether you want to open a tap. Despite stating that this was a dine in only, "the manager insists that a credit card will be held in restaurants possession until the final check is issued." This is a highly unusual practice I felt, makes you feel uncomfortable being labeled as a potential dine and ditch suspect. After I received the meal, a "Wiener Schnitzel", I think I understood the reason. I can clearly understand as to why people may not want to pay. The food is an embarrassment to German culinary tradition. The breading of the Schnitzel was corn based, an ingredient never used for that purpose. The rest tasted like cardboard. The potato salad was just as much not acceptable, even by American standards. This place could not exist in Germany for more than four weeks. The positive aspects are that the beer is very good, but what can you do wrong with that? You serve what you get from the brewery. That saved the review from one point. I see quite a few positive reviews. I can only explain that by the food order must have been placed after at least 5 or 6 German sized beers had been consumed. The exact same opinions were shared by other members of the German expat community.

Slow service and mediocre food

By Tonya D |

We stopped here for a couple of beers and appetizers. I will say that the beer was good and the atmosphere made you feel like you were in a German beer hall. Unfortunately that is the only positive part of our trip. Our server was not personable and gave very slow service despite the restaurant being nearly empty. We ordered 3 appetizers and they all came out overcooked. The wings were dried out with very little meat on them. With so many amazing family owned restaurants in New York City - I wouldn't waste your time coming here.

Great German Bier

By railtraveler55 |

Nice German Restaurant with some awesome German bier on tap. Unless you are familiar with the offerings I would suggest you try a flight of their offerings. The restaurant is located on the second floor and has both indoor and outdoor seating, along with a nice bar. The food was a bit of a mixed bag. First off they were out of haus dogs. It happens, but it was only 4PM. Ribs were just okay. Schnitzel was good, a little salty. Wurst was delicious as was the German potato salad and sauerkraut. The bierhaus burger was a home run, just awesome. Staff was friendly and attentive, especially our waitress. In all not a bad place. Great bier and some decent food, perhaps next time we might just stick to appetizers.

Good atmosphere, not-so-good food

By Brooke C |

Fun place to get a decent German beer but the food isn’t authentic and was by far my least favorite meal in New York.

Good Food and Fun

By Mike D |

Having been to the Hofbrau Haus in Munich and also in Kentucky (look it up), I was pleased to see this one in New York. They asked for ID upon entering so if you intend on going, have ID with you. To reach the restaurant required a steep stair climb. I assume there is an elevator since there was a wheelchair bound person in the restaurant but we didn't see it upon entering. As with German beer halls, you sit at a long table on benches with others. We were having an early dinner so it was not very crowded. There are other seating options but the benches are the way to go. We had wienerschnitzel and pretzels and beer. The dinner was served with potato and cucumber salads and red cabbage, all of which were excellent. The pretzel with mustard was great. It is a soft style hot pretzel, And the beer. Prices are reasonable for this part of NYC with the entrees around $20. There was a band that played a nice mixture of German oom-pah style music and popular music. Sing along, it's part of the fun.

The beer

By GeneseoSupremo |

The beer is the star, but everything else here on the second floor strives to make you feel like you’re in Munich. Well done. But really, the beer is unbeatable.

Very good food

By SebastianBKGER |

The food and Beer was very good and priced quite accordingly. The service was a little slow but it could have been a young waitress.

food is german, but ....

By willyf7 |

The food is German, but the music and dance performers are not exactly traditional German. Also, not clear why the Wiener Schnitzel is made of pork ... the definition of Wiener Schnitzel is made from veal.... life music can be little loud. Jaeger Schnitzel, and Spaetzle are my favored together with a 1liter Hefeweizen --- and yes ... the waitress first brought a regular Pilsner, but heh I grow up on Hefeweizen and see the difference ... no problem, a few minutes later she came back with the right one.

You won’t be disappointed

By David T |

So much fun. Make a reservation regardless of the day of the week. The atmosphere was great Good for all ages. Food was really good and the Apple strudel for dessert was amazing Wednesday night there was a band playing current music with a polka twist. I felt like I was in Disneyland at the Matterhorn having dinner. Great vibe. Hope you have a great time

Fun late lunch

By guppie9 |

We visited here in December 2018 for a late lunch. The food was excellent and the beer was tasty and cold. Maybe we were lucky to be there during the early afternoon as it wasn't very busy. I would defintely come back here. I would actually like to be there when there are more people as it looks like it would be fun with all the open seating.

Awful

By Richard L |

My friend and I visited this place twice during our stay in NY. He is 25 and, understandably, was asked for ID to get in. We understood the reason for this. But the guy on the entrance was awful. Really aggressive and totally unfriendly. What he could have said was something like “sorry sir but I need to see an ID before you can come in”. But he was awful. We’re in NY for a week and will never go back here. Surely it’s not unreasonable to have a friendly welcome; but not here.

Nice for a Fun Meal

By Russell R |

Been going to this place for years. Just got back from a long trip and we met a friend for Brunch. Much has changed in a year like no more unlimited drinks (mimosa) on the Sunday Brunch menu. Ok, I can deal with that, but man was that a deal! The setting as always is relaxing and the service spotty. Observations below. Mains; The burger no longer sports goat cheese, and the meat was a little flat. (C+) Mains: Breaded Veal was spot-on and as good as ever. (B) Desert: Strudel was about as good as you can get in NYC. (B+) Still like the place and will be back.

Restaurant is fine - let down by the detail

By dav0s88 |

Fond memories of Munich Oktoberfest and the Hofbrau tent, however, a world apart. At first wondered if we stumbled into a tourist trap. Food was fine, service was ok and restaurant generously provides free meals to children under 10. No handsoap in men's bathroom and some tables grubby and needing a good wipe. Beer pours were a bit inconsistent and would have been sent back in Europe. Fun environment with great potential. Some attention to detail would help feel more like an authentic German bierhaus.

always stop here while in the area

By argentswan |

This German beer hall is great! The food is good, staff are efficient and friendly and the beer is just right. A few too many big screen televisions. We look forward to stopping here when we are in the area of Grand Central Terminal which is a short walk away.

Good find

By Geoff E |

Brilliant atmosphere. Perhaps caught it on a good night but the upstairs venue was busy with live band and lindy hoppers dancing in the aisles. We moved out onto covered veranda to take in a bit of New York City street life passing by below. Authentic German fayre and service offered and delivered.

Beer & food following business in the City

By SlowCooker |

We sat at the bar which was a good choice. Service was great, fast and friendly. The beers were nice and cold and a great selection. Food was good although I have had better bratwurst and German potato salad but can't complain about what they served as it was tasty and reasonably priced. The sauerkraut was one of the best I've had.Nice atmosphere, lively, a little loud. Very clean restrooms, clean dining area. I would recommend this restaurant to friends and would go back again.

Good after work venue

By martynsnook |

Good place to go with a group. Selection of house beers. I had the lager which tasted ok. Drink from glass steiners. Large ones were a bit excessive. Small competitions throughout the night such as hold a beer with a straight arm for over 5 mins. Staff dressed up makes the atmosphere.

Vaguely amusing, but they have beer and an outdoor balcony.

By SampleASample |

Which is precisely enough reason to go. You get girls in dirndls, and group seating, and currywurst. Authentic enough so as not to be irritating, if you are atmosphere police. The balcony is just great, you get to scan street traffic while you have a beer.

Wild at night

By Mispar |

The place is getting wild with German-looking band playing. The food is great, the beer is, too. Come with a bunch of friends and have some fun. They even have a smoking area on the balcony.

Great food, great atmosphere

Visited on 26th December. Just arrived in NYC, and this was near to hotel. Walked in to great, warm atmosphere. Loved shared tables. Menu was fun and enjoyed our bratwurst. Delicious Black Forest Gateaux

Prosit!

By MichiganMike64 |

Exploring the map near my hotel led me here. I lived in Munich, Germany, for a number of years so a place that advertised itself as the Hofbräu Bierhaus was something I had to see. I came in for an early dinner and went up the stairs. Seating at small tables was limited as most were reserved for either parties coming in soon after I arrived or were in the area of the dance floor - meaning I was going to have to move and likely before I had my dinner served. I took a seat at a long bench at one of the larger central tables where I could watch the Futbol game being televised. I looked through the menu and found quite a bit of good German selections. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel which came with red cabbage (rotkohl), cold potato salad and cucumber salad. To wash everything down I ordered a small (.5l) Hefe Weizen. Immediately after ordering I was asked to hand over my credit card...apparently this is a precaution due to patrons doing the "dine and dash" but it was very disturbing and off-putting to me. It was about a hair's breadth to being offensive enough to me for to leave, but this is New York and f anything besides angry, it made me sad to think that a business felt a need to ask for something so stringent. When I went it wasn't very busy; another Waitress explained to me that it is more of an occurrence when the place is packed and easy for people to slip out. Still...it skewed my view of the restaurant and cost it a star in my rating. The food itself was excellent although the cutlet was just a bit tough. The beer was very good and once it was brought to my table I couldn't resist taking a drink before I remembered to take my picture! This definitely ISN'T a Hofbräu a la Munich, but it was good for a German restaurant in a place where it is hard to find traditional German offerings..

A place to avoid

By T P |

I was really excited to have a German restaurant across the street from our hotel. I envisioned most of my dinners in this brew haus. The food was hot, but over cooked and the bill for lunch (4 people) came to $121.00!!! No drinks, we had water!!!! The "hot" sauce on the wings resembled tomato paste, in taste. It was loud and noisy, as a past person posted, it is for those that are 2-3 years removed from college. Hell the crowd was cheering on a soccer game, from November 2014, yes I would say they were beverage enhanced. A true, true disappointment. Maybe this place needs these kids to pay their high prices to stay in business, but this is not a German restaurant. The outside may look it, but they need to go back to Germany to see how the food is really done. I will stick with the German restaurants in Chicago and San Francisco. I can hardly wait to see how the manager responds to this comment, as I note he does to most others.

Do not go

By kat5610 |

The food at this restaurant gets a 2. The schnitzel was very very tough, shoe leather would be a good description. The Hause Dog was slightly better but not worth $14. The beer was decent. The biggest problem was the service. My husband’s food arrived and the 17 minutes later my food arrived. I asked to speak with the manager, a woman, and she could have cared less that the food did not come out at the same time. In fact she stated that was normal and did not know why I was complaining. Additionally, as we were departing, she and the waiter, Mark, we’re talking about us which is 100% unprofessional. Finally, the restaurant is so loud that we had to choose outside seating so we could hear each other. With all the restaurants available in NY, I would not recommend that anyone try this place.

What did you say?

By Kitty272727 |

It’s hard to believe such a noisy place exists in the middle of the day in this relatively quiet neighborhood. Nevertheless we loved the food. The spaetzle with cheese and fried onions was the best, sausages were nicely crisp on the outside and tender and flavorful inside. One pork shank was enough to share, but it was a little dry. The sauce helped but we needed more of it. We had sauerkraut with and without caraway, both excellent, not too strong yet not bland. I liked both potato salads, one of new potatoes with skins on, the other in a tomato and herb dressing. Most people had beer; a pretty flight of five smallish mugs for $11 seemed popular, as well as the big mugs ubiquitous to beer halls. But we had a bottle of Riesling (could have been more chilled), being slightly sweet and fruity that paired very well with the food. Service by waitresses in mini dirndls is so kitschy but suitable for the large beer hall with long communal wooden tables and benches. Go with the flow: enjoy the food and drink, watch some sport on TV, don’t bother trying to have much conversation.

Why NYC is a fun place

By Paul J |

This place is one of those spots that make NYC fun and the center of the universe. Kinda looks like a very scaled down version of the Hofbrau House in Munich in midtown. Happened to hit a Monday night when they had a great jazz/swing band going. Service was great, food came out quickly and was delicious, Wurst Plate a must try if you can't make up your mind. Beer mugs stayed full until we left, which wasn't until the music stopped. I'm sure the other days must fun too...think Ill have to check it out. Prices for midtown were very reasonable.

Nice atmosphere to grab drink with friends, but not to eat dinner.

By Tanya A |

I would give this restaurant 2.5 stars, but that option was not available. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice, the interior of the restaurant felt very festive since they had strung up lights in the inside for the holiday and that is the only reason why I believe it deserves the half star. My biggest issue with this restaurant was the food. This might be a great place to go if you just want to just grab a drink with the buddies and not really buy any of the food. We both ordered the Haus Goulash soup, at $13 a bowl I was expecting something worthy of an entree sized soup (i.e. a nice size bowl). Instead, I got this tiny bowl of soup that was probably just a tad bigger than a cup. The flavor of the soup was decent, I could have done without the soggy, fatty piece of bacon floating around. I had to remove it,because it didn't look appetizing at all, it really didn't add much flavor to the soup, and every time I took a spoonful of soup, there it was in my spoon again. I really wish they would have cut the bacon up into smaller pieces. My boyfriend's soup had the same issue. The pumpernickel bread that came with the soup was a little bland. I was glad that we ordered a pretzel with our soup. The pretzel was the best part of our meal. We spent about $40 on 2 small soups, 2 tap waters and a pretzel. I feel like I could have gone to Jason's Deli or Panera and gotten a larger beef stew with the almost the same flavor for a cheaper price. I was very disappointed and would not recommend this place for dinner. If you are looking for a place to just grab drinks with friends then maybe this is the place for you.

Great Beer House w/ live music

By Gustave D |

Great value for the money! Noisy and friendly service! Food prices fair and portions large and beer selection sweet! There is an outdoor space overlooking third Ave. Shared picnic style tables!

Noisy, Fun Place for Young Adults

By Janet E |

My husband loves German sausages and beer and wanted to try this place out as it was located near our hotel. It was packed at 8 p.m. with young people enjoying music by a live band. It was not a place to enjoy a quiet meal. The pretzel with mustard was good, and my husband enjoyed the sausage and beer. The potato soup that I ordered was not what I expected, but it was ok. The cucumber salad was large and much better than the soup.

What a find! Awesome. Great beers, great service.

By 749David |

We happened to drive past in the Uber, so my son and I decided to try it. It's wonderful, just marvelous. Up on the 2nd floor with a balcony, lots of space and a nice bar. We sat at the bar, the bartender (I think he was 1/2 German, 1/2 Russian?), was perfect. Friendly and gave great advice. We had a couple of beers each and some food. Everything was great. They have all the Hofbrau beers, and authentic German food - I love this place. Not expensive.

Great Geman Food in nice atmosphere

By Teresa C |

Although not a huge fan of German Food, really enjoyed eating here. The food was good and so was the service. Really liked the appetizers and there is a lot to choose from. You will not leave hungry.

Worth the walk up!

By nutrinut |

The restaurant looks a little worn down but the food and ambiance made up for it. We had the pork shank for two which was delicious. The choice of beer was extensive and truly German. There are seats looking out over 3rd Avenue outside which is nice when the weather is good.

Fantastic Night Had

By Andy S |

Visited the Bierhaus NYC back in December 2013 just for a beer, always vowed that on our next visit we would return and eat in here. Fast forward to June 2017 and thats what we did. Between us we ordered the Rahmschnitzel & Käseschnitzel, both meals were extremely tasty, we were both left very impressed with the food. We found the entertainment to be really good fun, classic songs that know but played in a German style mixed in with german songs. People of all ages in the bierhaus were really enjoying themselves. Finally if you appreciate a good beer then this is the place for you. I have visited Germany on a few occasions and the Hofbrau beer that they sell in the Bierhaus NYC is my favourite. Next time we are in town, we will be back. Prost

Try out

By oxgang7 |

Nice place, reasonable bier prices good food(German) friendly staff, entertainment most nights which was very good

Enjoyed the Bierhaus atmosphere, beer and food!

By francois210 |

Not first timer in NY, but first time at the Bierhaus on 3rd Ave. It looked Munchen traditional from outside and late at night just arriving from the airport, we were starving so my wife and I just popped-in. There was quite a crowd and the long narrow board of beer samples were all over the tables. We were impressed with the menu, great value for money, as the plates are enormous. The service was very friendly and the charming waitress took time to explain the menu, the beers, the samples. We enjoyed so much that we came back a couple of times during our stay. If you have been to Munich, this is not the real thing, but it's certainly enjoyable, with a bit of of the haus character.

In plain English- Wonderful!!!!

By Jonathan O |

Yes in plain English, wonderful but those of us who with visit the fatherland know what word to use to describe this haus! My football colleagues and I gathered here to watch the 2016 Champions league final. Needless to say there were no German teams taking part, however our host were very generous and made everyone feel welcome. It was traditional fare, of sausages, potatoes, creams and onions but there were a few house special dishes like their wings glazed with jäger bbq sauce. All was washed down with large servings of beer! Our team that we were supporting lost but it couldn't damper the joy and friendships created that afternoon!!!!

Fun night out at the Bierhaus

By Michael M |

We arrived in Manhattan a little later than anticipated and decided to head down the street to the Bierhaus. Didn't have reservations, and were fortunate to be able to be seated after a short wait. Most of the tables are group style. We weren't brave enough to order the 2-liter beer boot, but there were other smaller sizes of their beer, which was really good. The pretzel for starters was exceptional. Bratwurst and schnitzel were good. There was a band that night (rock covers). They were good, but it was extremely loud. Just talking across the table meant shouting. Still, it looked like everyone there was having a good time, and we did, as well.

Wonderful place!

By DebbieE610 |

My husband and I enjoy coming into the city and trying foods from other countries, which is how we found this gem! We went in for a late lunch and a place to relax, and we very pleasantly surprised. We received a very warm welcome from the hostess and she helped us to find a nice cool table. Our server was Atarah, and she was so kind and helpful in guiding us to make the best choices. She was fun and friendly and made us feel welcome and comfortable. We wanted a variety so we got two appetizers, and two entrees, and my husband had a beer. So much food, we will be eating the leftovers for dinner. Service was fast and efficient, bathroom was clean, lunch was wonderful, and I wouldn't have any issues bringing my family in for a good meal. I will definitely go back.

Munich's Best

By Oliver S |

Few pleasures can compare to a quiet afternoon spent on the terrace overlooking 2nd Avenue, consuming glorious liter-large steins full with the Original Lager (or any of the other darker varieties) and tasting the Bavarian fare. Service is excellent and you get to meet many out of town customers. Highly recommended. BTW, if you are a shutterbug, the best view of the Chrysler building is one block from here (corner of 45th & Third Ave)

"Industrial Food"

By Journey814422 |

Before the end of the horror of the Berlin Wall, in Nov, 1989, East Germans would have called my dinner this evening "industrial food". Modern Germans would term it prison food. The menu indicates simple, inexpensive classic German food. What you receive is vile. However, you do get good live jazz.

Little Bavaria in Midtown Manhattan

By Heather S |

Great German beer house. This is a public house so they only offer Hofbräu beers. Great live music and the waitstaff are friendly and attentive. Will definitely go back. Did not have any food but it looked good.

Good food, great atmosphere

By Melinda M |

Enjoyed a lovely meal here during May 2018. Ordered the pretzel for starters and then the schnitzel for main. Great food, reasonable prices, easy to get a table (we were walk-ins rather than bookings). The server was quick and very friendly. Only criticism I had was that the server was so quick at refilling my diet coke - she didn't actually ask me if I wanted a new drink, she just whisked my glass away and brought it back filed (which I thought was great service!) but she neglected to tell me that this it wasn't free refills at this establishment - so I ended up paying for three soft drinks - $3.50 per drink. Gotta watch that in future and ask if its free refills or if its a new charge per beverage!

Great atmosphere...Terrrrriiiibbbbblllle food

By txcritic |

6 of us, two of us got the pork chops which were paper thin and fried to the point they were inedible. One of us git a burger and it was cold. The other two said their food was hot but didn't finish it. Really a disappointment since the atmosphere was pretty awesome.

Fab fun family dinner

By ASJ |

Fab time Went with our children for dinner Lovely staff and fun atmosphere Child’s sliders with fries and drink good value The pretzel share is a must for a starter The curry wurst was lovely The veggie Caesar salad was a nice healthier alternative And you have to try the fried pickles Beers are fab Massive menu The inn house band and fu atmosphere really added to the meal

A Great Place to eat

By Lynda I |

We have stayed across the street at Wyndham for years and never stopped in at the Bierhaus. We had a great meal and loved our beers! We will definitely visit the Bierhaus when we return to Wyndham Midtown 45 again!! We have been missing this gem of a place all these years!!!

Awesome Atmosphere

By James B |

Visited Bierhaus NYC to watch the Germany & Sweden World Cup match. Awesome atmosphere. Good was authentic and delicious. Beer was cold and plentiful. Pricing was good. Wait staff were awesome to deal with the world cup fans. Definitely will return.

The New York-style brewery...

By MC |

Typical Bavarian setting, but in New York style. Great beer, food not faithful to the German tradition, but all in all discreet. Nice staff, a bit hasty, but this depends on the city because in New York everyone is like this and it's annoying! Average price in New York, so much more expensive than a classic German brewery. Presence of screens to follow the sport. Local clientele and tourists. Decent experience even if not exciting.

Nice place, very busy

By Justin M |

Nice place to have a beer with friends, however one thing I learned quickly is that the seating is not communal, sections are booked out for groups which can make it difficult to find a seat. The beer was about 8 bucks a piece, quality and freshness isn't up to the same standard as Hofbrau house Munich. Had the dunkel, it was good but a little grainy.

Great service and food

By Mustravel_365 |

Pretty good 👌 The restaurant wasn't too busy but I guess it's Sunday and it's been raining. Great service, very attentive staff, great drinks and good food

This place has good food but way to noisy and crowded

By Allan S |

I found that the food here is quite good especially the currywurst but in addition to being extremely noisy the service is spotty. You also have to hike up some steps to get in and unless you have a larger group it will be iffy to dine . Good for parties and occasions but not for casual dining

Awful. Do yourself a favor and don't go!

By nener143143 |

I'll start by saying our waitress was awful. Like if there was a book on how to be a terrible waitress she was the author. It took forever to get everything. It was Sunday night and the place was NOT crowded so that had nothing to do with the wait time. They brought all of our food out at separate times AND completely forgot one of our friends orders. To top it all off the food was midi over at best and our bill was over $200. It was bad. There are so many better places to go. Skip this one.

This is the Place for You, If You Like German Food

By isenhourturner |

My husband loved his meal; I did not as I have a serious sweet tooth, and German food doesn't cater to my tastebuds. But, my husband gave the restaurant a 'thumbs up' and said it was some of the best German food he's eaten in many years.

Best Spätzle - Enjoyed our dinner!

By diznyprincessdi |

My husband loves all things German, so we had to try this place. We were pleasantly surprised! Looks like a traditional Beer hall - great ambiance. Make sure you order the Spätzle - some of the best I have ever had!! Worth the stop :-)

Our monthly meeting was here.

By Michael C |

I met up with my group as we hold a monthly meeting in a different place. So I was happy to see it in Manhattan and in a beer hall! Nice atmosphere and cold beir! There was a live band and in between sets they did trivia, and our table won $25 deducted from the tab. I ordered the sausage sampler, a huge portion with 5 different wursts and kraut, red cabbage and potato salad. Service was very good compared with some previous reviews. Not a bad place but I was expecting some more traditional entrees and a larger selection of beer.

Good place to end the night.

By suzyd43 |

We went here after a late dinner for a very late night drink. Definitely a young crowd. Definitely a place for beer lovers. We enjoyed a nice European wheat ale and split a huge pretzel with mustard. It was fun to sit outside and watch the activity over third Avenue. The buzz from inside is easily heard outside and lured us in.

Americanized Tosh

By stutt21 |

Pathetic imitation of the real thing – Tables with seats not benches – Multiple TV screens playing baseball games!!!!! – Cross between bluegrass and Benny Hill music no substitute for a Bavarian ump-pa band and so loud you can hardly hear yourself think – Food decidedly average and overpriced – Officious waitress would not accept photos of both German ID card AND passport on smart phone for a 24-year-old when “carded”. Go to Munich for an authentic bierhaus experience.

OK for beer

By dj_uk |

The beer here is OK (even in Munich Hofbrau is below average), the pretzels are good but I wouldn't recommend anything else - the food is expensive, mediocre and the portions are small. Service at the bar is good but table service is not. They really need to be more selective in their choice of bands as well...

German Biergarten right near Grand Central Station

By BlueFrogHops |

You have to walk up a long steep staircase to get to Bierhaus but it's kind of fun once you are there. It's more sportsbar than anything else, although the stein hoister servers do wear the traditional German outfits like the St. Pauli Girls. Rows of communal tables 'Biergarten' style. Lots of German banners & flags hanging from the ceiling. There is a balcony with tables & chairs that overlooks the street. I lived in Berlin for a bit and had a hankering for the "Currywurst" - which sounds very strange I admit unless you've lived in Germany (especially Berlin) where currywurst is sold on every street corner in carts like we sell hotdogs in NYC. It's a dog slathered in sweet/hot curry sauce. The wurst was really authentic - good, that is - and came with a mountain of fries. Of course they have the beers - lovely beers from Germany - and you can order them in the huge liter steins if you want. The servers were a bunch of young girls but they were very nice & the service was good. I went for a quick lunch but I bet it's a lot of fun on a Thursday happy hour with a group of friends.

Good time, great German food

By Jersey_Jet_Setter |

We had a great experience here. After Steuben day parade .. Quite a crowd. Our waitress was adorable and efficient. German food was authentic and pretty good (not best in city but solid ). Fun. Not sure why some reviews are bad. Pretzels were fresher than Hofbräuhaus in Munich in my opinion. Beer choices were excellent.

Swinging Monday

By Rugbynick |

Visited during a 3 night stay in NYC for Jazzhaus, swing with Cait and the Critters. Brilliant evening, great service and food was ok. Even managed to get on the floor with my wife for several numbers. My daughters enjoyed it and although one is only 17 was made welcome for soft drinks. Will definitely return.

German cuisine

By M B |

Ate lunch here yesterday with a friend. Menu caters pretty exclusively to those who like German cuisine. Staff was friendly, place was clean. Quality of the food was ok but not exceptional. We were seated directly under the sky light and I frequently found the sun hitting me in the eyes despite coming from overhead. The climb up the stairs was ok for me but would be a problem for those with mobility issues.

Fantastic evening in true German style

By Tricia W |

Our hotel was around the corner from this fantastic venue and we couldn't resist. From the outside it looks like a proper German tavern, or Bierhaus. Up the stairs and you find yourself in a fabulous bar/restaurant. We went on a Tuesday and found a live Polka Band in action. The beer was incredible. We ordered a pretzel to nibble on as it was after 9 pm. The band was brilliant. Food incredible and overall the best experience in New York. Would highly recommend taking a trip to this little big of Germany in Manhattan.

Pork & Sauerkraut on New Years

By Past_Master_1992 |

We had the pork shank for two with sauerkraut and roasted potatoes (new experience, always had mashed potatoes with this meal in PA Dutch country). The meal was very good, so was the pint of “original” brew that I had with it. I enjoy the atmosphere of the German Bierhaus. Will return here again, ate here last year when in town and was not disappointed.

Fun German place in NYC

By flaq |

This is a fun restaurant if you like German food. It is a little hard to find as the signage is not prominent. It os on the 2d floor over a Wendy's. The stairs are quite steep, so not a good spot for people with mobility issues. It is German food and beer, and reminiscent of Munich. Lots of good beer choices ranging from 0.5-2 liters. You can get beer in a boot here (glass boot) just like in Europe. Menu is German food with some standard American bar food (burgers, sliders, etc) as well. We shared a pretzel and the chips as an appetizer. For main course the schnitzel was very good. Our son had a chicken sandwich which was very good. Service is pleasant and helpful. Overall a fun, casual place for a meal.
