Solid food drinks Atmosphere

By aebush2017 |

Went 30 minutes before closing and was treated GREAT. Fine selection to choose form for drinks and food was good English pub.

Simple food

By Peter M |

Food was at best average but not quite worth the $100 for what was a bar supper & a couple of beers. Disliked the fact they automatically added 18% tip to bill without even asking - bill had a further blank box for an additional tip! Was visiting NY for 2weeks and this was the only place which adopted this practice. Beware!

Yummy

By Jeanne L |

Great beer selection, food was good, and a fun pub. Bartender and staff very friendly. Felt very homey and welcoming.

Stop for a Drink and Make New Friends

By Kaye L |

We decided on our latest trip to NYC to make it a pub crawl. Blackwell's was at the top of the list. It did not disappoint. We went in for a drink and met a local who checked our pub list and offered suggestions. He told us about the city - past and present. The pub was very authentic. What a great evening in a great pub.

Great pub

By Shannon C |

Quick service and good food. Went for a late lunch and it was pretty empty inside so I was a little nervous. The food was delicous though and bartender was personable. I had a chicken wrap with sweet potato fries and my husband ordered a burger and we would recommend both.

Great food

By Selina R |

Got to New York quite late & looking for somewhere to eat after & long journey. Food was good. Staff were attentive & polite

Great Local Pub

By pittyguy |

Food is really good for a pub. Bartenders are friendly and take good care of their customers however the Music was so loud hard to talk!

Casual dinner close to hotel

By Matt_nz1 |

We came here as a family for a bite to eat in a casual setting. Service was great and we really enjoyed thew food. If you are sick of your hotel food - then come here!

Nice Place

By 20Michelle15 |

Very nice and friendly staff. Rather large bar and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Great appetizers, great happy hour and friendly environment.

Wow! Great place for breakfast!

By IUFUND |

Wow! Great place for breakfast! They prepare an awesome Ham, cheese and spinach omelette. Also offer a beautiful side salad instead of the normal potatoes. A real plus. Adrian the bartender was awesome. He makes a killer drink or drinks! Just a real find!

Amazing food.. way beyond what to expect at a bar

By KarenS5321 |

We loved it so much we ate here twice. Best Brussel sprouts I have ever had. Good selection of food.. all was good.

Good pub fare and drink selection, with an attentive bartender. Worth stopping in if you are in the neighborhood.

Lovely and friendly

By chrissyLiverpool |

Close to our Hotel so thought we’d give it a try. Glad we did food was delicious ,service excellent prices reasonable. I wasn’t that hungry so just ordered the beef nachos as a snack but they were plentiful definitely worth a visit

Beautiful bar and delicious food

By cjo322 |

Went to Blackwells with a group of 8 adult family members on a Saturday night. All of our food arrived hot and was cooked perfectly. We were so pleased and very nice atmosphere. Our waitress was very busy with several tables but she was attentive and friendly. Would definitely return. This restaurant and bar appears newer but has a very classy look to it...it is very attractive.

Great Reuben Sandwich.

By Lawrence B |

While visiting midtown Manhattan, we came across this restaurant while seeking a casual restaurant for our dinner. Since my traveling partner and myself both had a late lunch, we decided on splitting a Reuben sandwich with a side of onion rings and a bowl of clam chowder. Both the sandwich and the service was excellent, but the clam chowder was excellent and that says a lot as I really don't care for clam chowder!

Handy Location to our daughters office

By marshalnk |

We wanted something close to our daughters office and Blackwell's was in her building. She had made reservations for a late lunch. The place had the charm of an Irish Pub. Michelle, was our waitress and she was very efficient. Edwin, kept the water coming. My husband had to have his favorite Irish beer Smithwicks, Our daughter ordered the Portobello Burger and was pleased. It came with fries. My husband and I ordered the Steakhouse Burgers and they were huge. They also came with fries and they were piping hot. My husband ordered the Apple crumble which came with two scoops of vanilla icecream. He proclaimed it was wonderful. My daughter and I shared the chocolate cake and it was excellent too. We will return and I saw some other food being served that looked wonderful.. We did not require dinner before attending a play later that night. Looking forward to having lunch here again when in New York.

Good place to eat and drink

By Dave S |

We arrived in New York after a long flight and an almost as long trip from airport to NYC and after booking in to hotel we needed to eat. We found this pub just a couple of blocks away and had a great welcome as we stepped through the door was seated straight away and served with a smile and had great service throughout. Food tasty and freshly cooked, beer was great and if you like American sports then you are well setup. Would go back again.

We came back the next Day!

By Fordan |

Well, when you fine a nice welcoming, fairly priced place to eat in NYC, you tend to gravitate back to it. We loved it, And Allan the bartender was great. Food was very good, and you could see many regulars there enjoying themselves, creating a fun atmosphere.

Good if you're in the area

By Beanie14 |

We had drinks here a couple of nights as it was near our hotel. There was a really good singer on the Saturday night and it would be great if they had more music on as it would attract more people to come in. We just had drinks at the bar so didn't try the food. The barmen on both nights were chatty and friendly and drinks were around the same price as most bars in the area. I'd certainly go back especially if there was music on.

Yuck!!!

By Nancy64houston |

I guess it's ok for a quick drink but absolutely skip the food. Ordered nachos for an appetizer to share. Bagged chips with velvety a slopped over with chicken chunks. Disgusting!

Good neighbourhood bar/restaurant

By Robert H |

Our 'local' during our stay in Manhatten. We only sampled the bar snacks and beer but they were fine for our needs. Staff very helpful and friendly; when I left something behind they had put it safely away so it was there for me next morning. Looking forward to visiting again when we are next in New York.

Reliable and Warm

By Northshore_Nancy |

We've dined and had drinks here several times. Across the street from Foxy John's, Blackwell's is less of a bar and more restaurant (although the bar is long and there are tables for those just stopping in for a drink). A decent menu and pricing. So far we've been able to drop in and get a table without reservations.

One great pub

By Charlie S |

Lunch was wonderful. Blackwell burger was perfect. Fries were just right and beer was a cold and delicious Sam Adams Octoberfest. Service was excellent. Rest of the party was very happy with salmon salad (full plate) , Wrap and Chicken plate. Best pub near Grand Central!

Very pleasant place for drinks.

By mkbruno |

I stopped in Blackwell’s on a recent Saturday afternoon to take a break from sightseeing and enjoy a couple drinks and a light bite. The bartender was very pleasant and the place was very clean. We munched on the nachos which were very good with fresh ingredients, not just stuff from a jar. The bathrooms were very clean.

Good call

By oggymuncher |

After a busy day we called in for a pub meal and a few drinks, the menu is not vast but has enough choices and there are specials , as visitors we had to have the steaks, they were delicious. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was great, sports on but not taking over, it was early evening so I expect it gets a bit livelier. Prices are pretty good

Warm Food for a Cool Day

By Patricia B |

We came in during a cooler March day more because we were looking for some temperature relief than food. Once we were sat with menus we saw the hot meals list and were determined to try some. Like another reviewer we ordered the Shepherds Pie and Chicken Marsala. The shepherds pie was very much what you would expect: vegetables and ground beef in a savoury gravy with a baked finish to the potatoes with some parsley. It was served hot from the oven and with warning to give it a minute so we don't scold our tongues. The Chicken Marsala also came out quite hot. The chicken pieces were white breast meat served in mushroom marsala sauce with saffron rice in the middle. It was very filling and well seasoned for a slight curry flavour. The atmosphere was warm with the red walls and solid wood tables and the staff were very kind.

ALot of good pub food

By guanacay |

Went in for a drink at the bar before dinner and ended up eating here. Glad we did. Busy Friday night with friendly Irish bartenders. In addition to good beers the Sheperd's pie was very good. But the special was basically Thanksgiving dinner--8 slices of turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, veggies, gravy. A favorite of my wife which kept us there for dinner.

A few Drinks and a meal

By cjsmithers |

We had a nice few drinks at the bar then moved to a table for a steak and chips meal. The bar area was nice and around the average of $8 per drink- the meal was Ok - not the best steak I have had but the trimmings where very good.

Lovely meal

By lindyloukent |

Had meal with family and the service was excellent as was the food. So good that two of us returned later in the week and the experience was just as good

Nice spot

By Stumatter |

Nice little pub. Reasonable prices, good food and good service. The French Onion Soup was outstanding. Note: we would have gone back but they are closed Sat/Sun

Friendly Staff; Great Service

By lemmonhome |

We stopped in here on an evening when many surrounding restaurants were closed for holiday parties. The restaurant was busy, and the bar was packed, but the hostess found us a table for two very quickly. Service was good and food was tasty. Nice local pub atmosphere.

Spacious, friendly, great location.

By Danny L |

The staff are friendly and the food and drink on offer very good. Blackwell's is just a bit too far from GCT to ever get busy with the commuter crowd, so it always feels comfortable. Menu is classic pub/ bar - sandwiches, salads, steak - but always a notch above the norm. Steak is especially good.

Killer Pizza

By 600tb |

I ordered six pizzas for a work luncheon, and as anticipated the pizza was great. Rave reviews for all in attendance. This is my go to deep dish on the southeast side.

Great pub

By Bigcityeater |

WE needed to catch a quick meal before a show and popped into Blackwell's. The place is just what you would expect, the service and food was better than you would expect. We ordered a Salmon entree and a steak sandwich, the food was great and the service was fast. The drinks we ordered had a very generous pour. Overall very happy with our experience.

Middle of The Road

By Kuvasz1988 |

Nothing special here. The food and the service is pedestrian. Non descriptive at best. The bar looks good however

Shepherds Pie & Chicken Marsala

By Patti D |

Food was excellent as well as the service! We were looking for a different restaurant, but glad we tried this one out.

Blackwell's Pub: Hmmm...there are other pubs in NYC

By Bret P |

I love a good Irish Pub. Unfortunately, Blackwell's won't make the cut. We stopped in to eat and have a couple of drinks. For drinks, my wife had the La Crema chardonnay. I had the the Black's Manhattan. Whew. It was barely drinkable. Then my wife had chicken fingers -- they were huge but bland. I had the fish and chips. The fish was standard over-fried fare and the chips were mediocre Ore-Ida fries. The service was spotty. Then, when I went to the restroom, the music playing was Nickelback. And, well, that pretty much sealed the deal.

Pub and restaurant

By Rafael PR |

We happened to visit the place and decided to try, we really liked the PUB, the delicious nacho (CON CHILI) , the blackwell burger have to try it, also the steak sandwich, delicious. If you arrive after 5 a little crowded as the office workers resume there. Visit it highly recommended

Great place to grab something quick.

By Ed H |

We ate at Blackwell's twice when in NYC. It was across the street from out hotel. The food was good (fish and chips and french onion soup were excellent). The atmosphere was fun with great service.

Friendly bartender - straight from Dublin - and good pub food

By Christine H |

Almost had dinner here and the folks were gracious when we had to cancel our reservation. We did, however, end up at Blackwell's for a quick drink and some appetizers. Well-stocked bar, comfortable atmosphere, and reasonable prices for the Big Apple. Worth a stop by.

Good Food but Noisy

By dragonhmc |

Fun atmosphere, but too noisy for visiting with friends. Service was good, servers were very nice. Decent food with reasonable prices. Tuna melt, chicken BLT and chicken quesadillas were all a hit.

Not Tourist Friendly

By MAC3840 |

We went on a weeknight at 9:00 so the restaurant wasn't busy at all. They sat us in the worst table available. Our server and every employee we interacted with was not friendly at all, but they had a good time chatting amongst themselves a lot. We had to get their attention for every request. Food wasn't very good for 3 out of 4 of us. Neat looking neighborhood type place that I thought would be perfect for what we were looking for, but it wasn't that at all.

Dinner

By Xcri |

On my first night in nyc with my husband we had dinner here as it was close to our hotel it was listed as connelleys on trip advisor but it must have changed hands. But not quality. The service was perfect s really lovely girl served us. She was attentive and friendly but not pushy and she made a real liqueur coffee at the end of the meal. No spray cream the real thing. The food was of an excellent standard without being overly priced for nyc. Def would visit here again. Also the drinks in here were reasonably priced for nyc. A must for visitors if you are in this area.

Great homey hideaway in nyc

By Sarah C |

Excellent service and fantastic food. The chicken wrap was the best I’ve ever had anywhere. Cocktails are healthy as well

Great food, excellent service

By LisaCMELB |

variety of food and at reasonable prices, you have choice of eating at bar or at back of pub for quieter place to chat.

First stop.

By Rebecca S |

Blackwells was really close to our hotel, so it was our first stop. We were there during happy hour. The bartenders were charming, the drinks cold and the bar menu perfect as a snack. We had the beef nachos which were yummy.

Great food and atmosphere

By David M |

We recently staid at an hotel across the road from Blackwell's. Despite there being hundreds of restaurants within easy walking distance and plans to eat at a different one every night we ended up going to Blackwell's four times. The food was home cooked, excellent and for New York very reasonably priced. The best part was the warm greeting and excellent service we received from Anne Marie who by the 4th visit was treating us like lifetime friends. In fact on the last evening she bought us drinks, sat with us and when we shared goodbye hugs made us promise to return soon.

Midtown Pub

By Joseph W |

I stopped in to Blackwells on the way to a Mets game. It's a very nice looking establishment. Nice wood and open spaces. I don't know how a lunch or dinner crowd is. As I came in about 3:00pm. I had a side of Buffalo Wings,A Blackwell Burger and a brew for a reasonable price compared to at the stadium. They even gave me free Onion Rings because the order was misplaced. I got yummy fries instead. But I got BOTH!If you are visiting NYC and happen to be hungry or thirsty this would be ideal if you are near Grand Central Station.

Friendly and welcoming

By Laurawise1 |

Arrived after a busy day sightseeing. We wished we had found this gem sooner. Lovely friendly staff, great service, good prices and lovely food. Not to be missed! ❤️

Great place

By Jo S |

Visited here recently, what a great place! Nice friendly, happy staff, good food too and it arrived quickly. We went back for a 2nd visit and the waitress remembered our drinks order, we were very impressed. I highly recommend visiting here :)

Amazing food and reasonable pricing too

By evaloude2016 |

Had 2 courses for 2 people and it was delicious and very reasonably priced too. The starters were plentiful in portion size and even I struggle to finish my main course, but I did ;)

Pub atmosphere serving great food

By Janet S |

Despite staying in this area 4 times we managed to over look this little gem and only found it by accident so forgive us for not looking down the side streets. Very welcoming staff with a very friendly approach. Good home cooked pub food. Had the calamari starter along with spicy chicken wings both of which were very tasty. Mains ordered were a minute steak with French fries, the steak was excellent and also quite large, my husband even checked it was a minute steak!! Also had the chicken with shrimp (the shrimp being very large king prawns) in a tomato & tequila sauce, which was very enjoyable. We were seated in the restaurant but the place had a good pub style vibe about it and would be a great place to just sit and enjoy a drink, shame we found it on the last night.

Great Bar

By HEVER |

We were staying in a hotel nearby and had a wander one evening looking for a bar and we found the Blackwell. Prices are reasonable and the place is very clean. Staff friendly too. We didn't really have a meal here (sorry we didn't as the food coming out looked lovely and large portions too). We did order a portion of fries on our last day before our flight and even those were lovely and fresh and piping hot. We visited this bar a couple of times and would definitely return but next time we'll have a meal too.

Good food and atmosphere

By JohnA26Omaha |

My steak salad was cooked very well(medium) and tasted awesome. The Atmosphere was okay but not what I would consider vibrant. The prices were relatively inexpensive by NYC standards.

If you're looking for a "real" pub...

By Laura M |

... This is it. Flavorful food that is always consistent, super friendly staff, and if you like beer, be sure to try Blackwell's Ale. It's a delicious Irish red with tones of caramel and coffee that goes down smooth. A great place to grab a bite near 42nd without the tourists and crowds.

Best Pub In New York Without A Doubt.

By David G |

Staying in Lexington Hotel around the corner. Discovered this, unfortunately on last night of visit. Fantastic food.My sirloin was loads better than I had in Smith and W++++++++y. Fabulous Calamares,oh I could go on and on but I won't. Stay away from pricier designer pubs,go here. Staff outstanding. Plenty of room. Great reasonably priced drinks. Toilets spotless. Loads of televisions. Great young lady manager from Northern Ireland, really friendly and hospitable. I know,I did go on,but this place is OUTSTANDING.

Beer, steaks and baseball!! Great NYC pub.

By Evievi123139 |

Staying at the Lexington we decided to try Blackwell's after getting a flyer when passing earlier in the afternoon. Loved the look of the pub inside and liked the atmosphere with the local office workers unwinding with drinks.Decent menu, opted for steaks x 2 with peppercorn sauce, veg and chips. Steaks were great. Three rounds of alcoholic drinks and the bill was £80. Waiting staff need to keep an eye out as getting drinks was a bit tedious and especially when they are standing on their phones. Didn't take away from a good night. Visited Tue 16 June 2015 YB.

A local watering hole for anyone staying in the area

By Robert R |

The food, staff and drinks are great. Whether you're looking for a light bite to eat, or a substantial meal to keep you going for the day, Blackwells has a brilliant selection. The staff always make us feel welcome and will always give you the time of day. They're full of local knowledge as well as a good bit of banter. There's sports on TV, live music at weekends and something for everyone. We'll keep coming back!

Typical NYC Irish bar.

By sunlunlad |

Decent grub, decent beer and excellent craic with the staff here. We were made to feel very welcome and given lots of advice.

Great clients and friendly staff.

By Ian K |

An impromptu visit for drinks left us finding a great bar with lovely clients and staff in a friendly environment. A good selection of beers and plenty of space to move round. Thanks for helping to make our day

Great Irish Bar, Great Food

By AmbassadorCarl |

Your visit to the east side and Turtle Bay neighborhood is not complete until you stop into this place. Friendly staff, great drinks, great pub atmospehre.

Visited twice

By Buc072 |

Our rating reflects our overall experience of restaurants in NY. This was a great place that all of the family enjoyed. Steaks were cooked to our preference. Agree it can be noisy but seated to the rear of the restaurant, it was pleasant enough. The air con in this place was not however working and whilst the staff tried to keep the place cool, it generally was warmer that preferred. Drinks prices are reasonable, $2.50 for a glass of coke, $7.50 for a pint of bud light. Service charge is added to the check but having enjoyed our meals and had good service, was happy to pay.

Excellent Neighborhood Bar and Pub

By Presto67 |

We go to Blackwells all the time to hang out, grab a drink and food while watching a sporting event. Food is excellent with a wide variety to choose from. The service is the best. Johnnie is one of the best bartenders in NYC. Stop by and say hello.

Good food, reasonably priced

By R H |

We stumbled upon Blackwell's after arriving in New York and walking around near our hotel. It was a random pick for dinner, and we were happy with it after a long day of travel. Would recommend.

Best Guinness I've had for years

By stuart l |

Friendly happy to help Guinness is superb served as it used to be creamy and cold . Had the chicken pasta fresh and very tasty

Quiet Pub

By Liz M |

This pub was right around the corner from our Hotel (Rodger Smith) so tended to go there for a later evening drink and a bite of food. Pleasant, fast service. Adequate pub food. It was not busy the times we went.

Great Irish fare and great prices.

By Kevin C |

Standard fare, but well done. Great happy hour as well. And of course, the location is centrally located to the City.

Great Atmosphere

By JWarren1991 |

My wife and I came here our first night in the city and absolutely enjoyed ourselves. The atmosphere here is uppity and sporty. We both ordered the Blackwell Burger which was cooked perfectly! The only downside to the food was the fries. Service here is very much the type of service you can expect in a pub so I wouldn't recommend it if your expecting high class service.

Great Fine

By Linda H |

We originally went into this restaurant because it was raining. My husband ordered the turkey dinner and got a number of thick slices of fresh turkey with stuffing and it was wonderful. I ordered the salad with goat cheese and shrimp and really enjoyed. My daughter ordered a sandwich and enjoyed it and my granddaughter ordered a hamburger and was very happy. The pricing was extremely reasonable especially for New York

Atmosphere

By beentheresue |

Lively, friendly atmosphere. Good selection on the menu, tasty food and reasonable price. Ticks all the boxes.

Very friendly

By KaPvacay |

Busy pub with a great atmosphere. The staff were super friendly and attentive. Great food. A gem in midtown. Great for a nightcap. Good music.

Very good quality food & great selection of beers on tap. Excellent & friendly staff Pleasant pub decor - spacious Probably one of the better pubs in NY

Great find

By Bob C |

We found this pub a few years ago while visiting the city, we have been back three time since. The food is always excellent, the service is fast and the prices are reasonable for New York city. Nice comfortable setting.

Great pub and sports bar with excellent food.

By John R |

Great pub with excellent food. Adrian is a top shelf bartender! Look forward to returning in the near future.

Basic Irish fare. Clean and fast service

By skatermom59 |

Went with my Irish mom and family for a quick bite after seeing all the windows and tree She had corn beef and cabbage which she loved. The rest of us had burgers. I had portobello burger and it was delicious my daughter the Blackwell burger. All very filling Service was quick and wait staff very nice. Mix of tourist and office workers for weekday lunch

Great cocktails

Nice Place...

By Adrian Marano |

We were very tired and ended up in Blackwells since it’s pretty close to the hotel. We ordered bunch of different Draft Beers including Blue Moon, Stella, Heineken and some others... We also ordered bar Menu: Chicken Fingers, Quesadillas and some others... Everything was fantastic and there were also Live music so it was wonderful. We’ll come back again soon as the place and the prices are Superb.

Great Pub, great food, very hospitable

By peggyo410 |

We stumbled on this great Irish Pub which was located across the street from The Bernic Hotel. We loved everything we had and recommend it highly. The staff was very attentive and pricing was fair for NYC.

Great little pub!

Found Blackwell’s while staying in New York. Great little pub Good atmosphere and tasty food. Anne Marie was very friendly and fun.

Lovely Spot

By Jeanie90 |

Great pub with great Staff, Johnny is a diamond. Lovely, well kept, clean bar. Good background music and good company. Worth a visit every time

Excellent place for dinner

By Ramble-and-Trek |

They have a wonderful selection of salads and other entrees. The food and service were excellent. Can be a bit noisy at dinnertime, but not uncomfortably so.

Quick and delicious dinner

By Gustave D |

Gave this Irish pub a shot early last night with the wife. Nice Irish menu with some classics and a great selection of burgers. I had the Blackwell burger and Szu had the Shepard's pie. Both dishes were great but the pie was better. The prices are good for the area and their is a huge bar with flat screens ...

Great pub really friendly staff!

By Luciaturriani91 |

Myself and my partner stayed at The Lexington Hotel just round the corner last month. We came here for a drink as we had half an hour to spare before our room was ready and we were glad we came in as we here as we ended up chatting to a few different guys behind the bar each time we came in! The guy behind the bar (irish- I actually think all the staff here were Irish) gave us a great tip for ice hockey tickets! We were ready to click through to buy them on ticket master for that evening at €300 for two tickets when he showed us a website called StubHub where we could get last minute deals for ticketed events and we got them for less than half the price we were about to pay! He told us about the area and how to find some attractions and Times Square ect and was generally just really friendly. We ended up coming here every night for a drink before we made our way out for dinner (and ended up here a few times after being out all night) this was also our last stop on St.Patricks day/night! We had food here really late one night after being shopping all day and the food was great too, very generous portions & great menu. We ended up talking to different bar staff each night we were in and they were all so welcoming! Great beers and whiskies (which we had had a good few of haha) and all over very welcoming! I’d definitely reccomend coming here for drinks or dinner and i will definitely be back on my next trip to NYC. Great staff and great bar!

Good find in Manhattan

By ABZ |

PROS -great bar -fantastic bar service from David -reasonably priced drinks -good bar eats -great location CONS -Cauliflower is friend yet menu says grilled -not too many real dinner options

Nice spot in the area

By Carlos T |

This very specious place has a nice ambiance and also great service. Definitely a good option for drinks if you are in the area.

Corporate feel, good fish

By dbomp |

I'd give 3.5 if I could. Aesthetically it's a pretty generic restaurant and didn't have much character -- nothing bad, just not very interesting. My father had the fish and chips and they were really quite good. Very crunchy breading and soft skin-on fries. My chicken curry wouldn't pass by Indian standards, but it's an Irish-themed restaurant and the food tasted just as I remembered in Britain. Would I go again? There are lots of choices I haven't tried yet, so not soon, but if I had to recommend a solid safe choice to someone, sure.

Food was just not that good!

By DrWu1980 |

Took my family for lunch to Blackwell's. First timer. Good lunch-time vibe--restaurant was packed on a snowy day. Very friendly waitstaff, seated quickly and service was attentive. I love pub grub and my standards regarding food are not that picky. That said, the food here was just not good. We ordered a steak sandwich, tuna melt, and an onion soup. The steak sandwich was served on a thick bread in which a thin slab of meat was hiding. The tuna melt was listed under sandwiches and came as an open faced sandwich and was average. I am not going to write off Blackwell's because of their strong service. One more try is in order, the next time I am going with the burger--the staple of a good Irish-NYC pub.

Noisy and soulless, despite a friendly bar man

By MakatiMaan |

The beer is pretty good, but from a restricted list (why?), the food is almost all of the walking around variety...why is salmon the only alternative to beef on so many NY Irish pubs? Get yer act together boys, for the times they are a changing.....

Dinner after a long day

By ChrisintheBahamas |

I saw reviews of this place and decided to visit as it was close to my hotel. The place was fairly empty but the live Irish singer created a good atmosphere I had a couple of nicely cold tasty beers and food consisting of crab cakes then bangers and mash. The food was simple and tasty with great attentive service. The singer was good too

Stopped in for a drink...wrong choice

By Jeff B |

We did not eat so can't speak to that. Their beer selection reminds me of Applebee's or some other chain restaurant from the early 2000s. Doesn't appear much thought went into it. Not much appreciation for local beers. The second shift staff is some of the most distracted and frankly lazy I've seen. The place was slow, but sitting around with customers at the bar, playing on phones, chumming around with friends and generally not doing anything in front of customers seems inappropriate. Atmosphere is pretty typical, nothing of interest. All in all was really disappointed with the choice.

Great spot for dinner

By Linda W |

Came here with a friend in her birthday. We had a reservation and we're seated at a nice booth in a little nook, away from the bar noise. She had the feta and roasted peppers salad, and I had the spinach Cobb salad with grilled steak. We shared a side of Mac & cheese. Wow! The mac & cheese was awesome--creamy and loaded with flavor. Both of our salads were very good. After our server cleared the table she brought out a slice of cheesecake in the house for my friend's birthday. It was delicious, creamy with virtually no crust, and no fruit sauce--just luscious cheesecake.

Great bar, friendly atmosphere

By Ziggy5150 |

My wife and I stopped in for a drink on the first night of stay in New York. I really. Loved the friendly warm vibe right from the start. Staff was very warm and inviting. They interacted with us in a genuinely nice way like they were actually happy we were there which is something something you don’t always find. We didn’t have anything to eat but the food I saw looked really good. We enjoyed the place so much we stopped in on our last night in the city. We’ll definitely visit again.

Don't Order the Fish and Chips Unless you want Captain Highliner!!

By Pamela058 |

They are generally fantastic with their steak sandwiches. The steaks are all different sizes, though, lol, and not always done as requested. But tonight I ordered the fish and chips and OMG I was so disgusted. When they came I said they look they're from Captain Highliner. Two square, hard pieces of fish. Had I been alone, I would have sent them back. The batter was THICK and HARD. I could peel it off. Just gross. Don't sell what you can't cook!! Huge disappointment.

Always fine food and company

By rgyemant |

I follow my pals to Blackwelll's and suggested to my wife last Christmas that we go and she was surprised at the genial atmosphere and great food. Wonderful winelist

Great Place

We were walking back to our Hotel on a Sunday and were getting hungry for a lunch but didn't want to spend a typical NY price of $100. plus. We lucked out and found this Irish pub in a section of the Street where we did not expect to necessarily find a good place. It was attractive and nicely decorated for the Christmas Holidays but more important it was clean, the employees were friendly and the food was good, as well as being reasonably priced. I got their Blackwell's hamburger and my wife ordered two appetizers (mac & cheese with bacon and mini crab cakes) for her lunch. This is a typical Pub with seating in a bar atmosphere with TVs tuned to the various NY sports teams but we saw several families there and it is set up in a way to feel like a restaurant. I saved their business card because we plan on returning! Since this is billed as an Irish Pub, I want to try their Shepherd's Pie next.

Good cheap food

Good atmosphere in here. Food was good, service really quick - a little too quick as my main arrived before I finished my starter so I left the rest of it. Drinks really expensive but food really reasonable.

BLACKWELLS RESTAURANT LEX AVE AND 47th STREET

By GJWB |

This pub was round the corner from our Marriott hotel on 48th street so very convenient. Nice old fashioned bar (long bar) and area for dining. The service was very friendly and good and food was excellent. My daughter and I had burger and fries with slaw, other daughter had steak sandwich and my wife had mac and cheese. My wife and daughters had corona lagers and I had sam adams seasonal ale which was very good. Portions were big and food was hot and very tasty. Would recommend this for great bar food and great atmosphere.

Great little bar. Came for a final drink & spot of food before we headed back home. Wish we had found it sooner into our trip👍🏼

Great irish pub

Enjoyable place for dinner. Buzzing and energetic and at the same time you can have a quiet meal. Friendly staff that provide great food and service. Great steak.

Great lunch

By FloLongIslandNY |

We stumbled upon Blackwells by accident on our way walking from Rockefeller center. The appetizers were chicken nachos and fried calamari both excellent. Came very fast ,drinks also came quick. We had the steak sandwich and turkey burger both very good. Highly recommend this clean, nice pub!

Solid pub food, friendly bartender

By Anna911 |

The food here is decent. On its own I would say 4 stars. The bartender and crowd earned the extra start on this one. Friendly, engaging and laid back. Drinks were generously poured, perfect half and half. We were looking for a casual dinner spot close to the hotel ave definitely found it here. Technically my panini was a sandwich on flatbread but it was flavorful enough that I found no reason to complain. My friend was equally as happy with her fish and chips.

Solid Brunch and Bar Scene

By Al S |

Sister and I hit this place after checking into our hotel on a Sunday morning. Headed there for a brunch option. Good menu choices, the specials each come with a mimosa or bloody mary; always a good way to star the day. She had Eggs Benedict and I had the omelet option with ham, onion and cheese. Potatoes and toast to round it out. Good portions, solid menu and friendly and efficient staff. Went back on a Tuesday evening around 630pm with the after work crowd for drinks before dinner somewhere else. Full place and lively crowd. Nice option for the area.

Walked in, walked out

Thinking it would be nice to visit an 'English' pub, we booked for a business meeting - just three of us - but when we arrived on Friday evening the noise levels were incredible. Even sitting right next to each other, conversation was impossible. Never encountered this problem in England - true that New Yorkers tend to have louder voices than Brits, but the acoustics must have had something to do with it...

Nice Pub with Good Food

By CEC1024 |

We enjoyed a late lunch here on a quiet Saturday afternoon. We shared an order of the bacon and cheese potato skins which were very good. I had the chicken "burger" which is a crispy chicken breast with bacon and cheese on a brioche roll. My husband enjoyed his steak sandwich. Both sandwiches were hot, tasty and served with fries and cole slaw. Our server was very pleasant and attentive. Nice decor, good food and service and reasonable prices ---we'll be back!

Worth the stop

Went for lunch. We were they only ones there, it was a bit late. Service was good, food excellent. We had salads, sandwiches ect. Very clean. Would recommend.

Fun and relaxed

By Docbclark |

The caesar salad was yummy despite an unusual sweetness. Marinara was more like salsa but the potato skins unbeatable with tons of crispy bacon! Perfect Irish Car Bombs and even serves Yuengling. Our Irish waitress was prompt yet friendly.

Weeknight Visit

By restguyAugusta |

Lots of urban professionals hanging out. Staff very nice and hospitable. Had good brew selection but no Harps. $8 for a Smithwicks draft ? $12 for a shot of Fireball...yikes...

Good option for a quick bite

Stop unexpectedly for a late lunch. Nice place but probably more for an evening drink and small bitte instead of lunch...

Good place for a good lunch

By Frank D |

Nice restaurant and pub! Everyone was friendly. We only had time for a quick lunch, so we couldn't enjoy the pub side. We tried the Steakhouse burger and Chipotle chicken salad wrap and it was all well prepared. All tasted good. Good bargain for the city!

Home from Home

By Jeanie90 |

We gave a week in NYC over the new year. Black wells had been recommended by a friend and it ended up being our local for the week. It's a spotless pub and really relaxing. Even though it's in the heart of the city it's never too busy that you can't relax and enjoy a beverage! The staff there are friendly and mainly Irish .. We are there a few nights too and the food was deliciously tasty!!

Dinner on a Friday night during happy hour

By charleyboy1955 |

The place was very very busy and as it was coming to the end of a happy hour the noise of conversation was loud. It started to quieten down and all in all it did not affect our enjoyment. The customer service (Mags B) was excellent, friendly and engaging. Portion sizes were enormous. Thoroughly recommend the Mac and Cheese and Shepherds Pie.

Ideal for a tasty light meal

By Richard J |

Browsing the menu outside we were invited in by a very friendly and helpful hostess who saw to our every need. There was a nice selection of relatively light gastro meals at a reasonable cost. The meals were all tasty and well presented. The service was prompt and efficient. The 'pub' was a typical, bustling New York bar with lots of atmosphere.

Hearty Shepherd’s Pie

By Elsa C. L. |

The ambience is good. Service is excellent. The location is convenient for working people. Prices are reasonable with a nice variety of choices on the menu. Our Shepherd’s Pie was satisfying. Our friend’s chicken dish was not bad either.

By Tina E |

Stopped in for a sandwich and a drink. Good food, nice atmosphere . friendly bartender, prices reasonable.

Great atmosphere, really friendly employees.

By sleepingbeauty_10 |

We are staying at the Benjamin in New York. Husband and I have been to Ireland several times and we look for Irish pubs when traveling. The atmosphere is so warm and inviting. The staff makes you feel like a local and really want you to have a nice experience. We talked about Ireland and it was fun to hear that beautiful accent again from the bartender. We will definitely be back! Great job!

Best Irish Bar in the area

By GMan565 |

There are several Irish bars in the area around 47th and 3rd, but this is by far my favorite. The staff here is great - and all three bartenders are from Ireland and love to talk and share. The food is typical bar food with a selection of Irish style plates - bangers and mash, fish and chips, shepard's pie, and the normal fair of wings, burgers, pasta, etc. They have a great selection of beers on tap poured in proper pints, and a wide selection of Irish Whiskeys along with all the rest. Music and TVs are not overly loud, so you can have a conversation with your friends, spouse, or bartender without yelling. Always a good time, and while at times full, it's never cramped as it was properly designed.

If You Want a Pub and Don't Need a Restaurant

By 407Steve |

Blackwell's certainly appears authentic. At 6:00pm, it suffered, however, from the common malady of all mid-upper East Side taverns: NOISE. Don't go there when it's busy if you're looking for a quiet table. Service was good, prices weren't frightening, compared to the others in the neighborhood, and the clientele seemed pleasant. I ordered the Shepherd's Pie, and frankly, I've had better. Not BAD food, just....meh. Not much flavor frankly.

Easy to miss, centrally located friendly pub with good food and friendly staff

By Patrick P |

At roughly 48th and Lexington, Blackwell's is easy to miss, but if you are in the mood for a drink and a burger, sandwich, salad, or appetizer, stop in. If you need to see a game, Blackwell's will have it or get it for you. It may not rise to the level of fine dining, though it did have some higher end offerings. The real beauty of this place is the traditional pub offerings and a staff eager to please.

Nice food

Went today 25/11/15. Food and atmosphere was great. Found New York more expensive since I was here last so it was good to find somewhere with good food at a reasonable price.

Excellent Food & Excellent Staff

By William C |

Arrived to the most attentive staff we have encountered throughout NY. Anne Marie is an asset to the bar. Her recommendations for food we excellent as well as the time she had taken to speak to us. Unlike other Irish bars we had visited throughout the city. The food was ample and was a taste of home just like and Irish bar should be. Onion rings are divine and a plenty. Thanks Anne Marie for your customer service.

Food Doesn't Quite Measure Up to Decor

By Escalade5 |

The decor is excellent. Shiny rich red wood, cloth covered tables. Although my friend and I entered at the top of the lunch hour when it wasn't busy, it took a long time for our meals to come. I had the pita and hummus appetizer first. The pita triangles were warm and delicious, but the hummus tasted mildly acidic. I love hummus and have never encountered that before. Next, I had the Maryland crab cakes. They were delicious paired with the creole mayonnaise, however I found the 3 little crab cake portion served unsatisfying. I also had sautéed mushrooms on the side which were too bland for me to enjoy. If only the food matched the decor...

Nice NYC Pub!

By NJBeachbummz |

Stopped in Blackwell's Pub and Restaurant last Sunday afternoon for some frosty beverages and a bite to eat. Only a few people were in the restaurant that day...apparently the Pub was having a problem with the A/C so it was a little warm inside, not sure if that is why there were so few people -- but that's what cold beer is for! (The beer was cold - so no harm, no foul). We sat at the bar and ordered some beers and a plate of nachos. The nachos were piled high with a variety of toppings. The nachos had a chunk chicken so they were fabulous and very filling! The Pub was half a block off of Lexington Avenue and two blocks from our hotel (New York Marriott East Side)...very convenient! There were a bunch of TVs so I would say it's a good place to watch a game with friends.

A sit down restaurant near Grand Central Station

By zomzie |

The service was good and the food was very good. Nothing to complain about. The music was a little too high for conversation but overall a nice place to eat. I had the Chicken Paillard salad and it was very tasty. Probably a little more pub than restaurant

Good Bar in NY

Very Quiet During Covid - But A Comfortable Place For a Good Meal

By NewfiePupLover |

My family enjoyed dinner at Blackwell's the week after Christmas with Larysa as our server. She was very familiar with the menu and provided us with good suggestions, and the busboy did a great job of keeping our water filled and table cleared of plates. My 10-year old daughter had the Chicken Curry and loved it; enough that she said she'd order it again here or elsewhere. The only place she has had a curry dish before was from our Indian neighbors at their home. I had the Chicken Marsala which was good, but could have been prepared with more of the marsala flavor. The size of the dishes were large enough to take leftovers. The caesar salad was also good, and the cheesecake was delicious. When the city is busier after Covid ends this place is probably quite a nice spot with a great atmosphere. I would return here again. Very modest pricing for Manhattan.

Blackwells - Bar & Atmosphere = 4.5, Staff = 5, Food = 3.5 (very affordable for neighborhood)

By FloodyFlood |

I agree, very good neighborhood bar, bartenders and wait staff are great, food highs and lows, High = most dishes, Burgers = not bad, would like a home made burger, fries = not so good, sweet potato fries = good. my wife had salmon, = good, has food allergies --staff was very good and informed.

One of the worst places I've been

By ChiefMinion1 |

We decided to choose a place to eat near our hotel and picked this place after reading reviews. We went at 8pm on a Sunday night and the place was empty which should have told us something! We weren't greeted at all but eventually a couple of menus were tossed onto a table indicating where we should sit. We selected our choices but waited a further 10 minutes before we were asked what we wanted. The beer we ordered was okay- expensive at $8 but that's New York. We ordered chicken curry and chicken marsala and a bottle of wine (at $38 a bottle so not cheap!). The food came about 10 minutes later. The curry was tasteless and the chicken marsala was cold and tasteless. We decided that we would have ice cream to finish but after waiting a further 10 minutes we were presented with the bill and told they were closing. The bill already included an 18% tip (which was an absolute cheek after the poor service) but there was room for an additional tip. Needless to say we didn't leave one. Overall the bill amounted to $115 for what I can only describe as a terrible experience. None of the serving staff were bothered with us and the place was cold and empty. Avoid at all costs many more places deserving your dollars in New York!

Great find in Midtown!

By CarolS |

We've never been here before but we're so glad we found it today. Relaxed atmosphere, really pretty inside with lots of woodwork and soft lighting, and very friendly staff. My husband had the shepherd's pie and it was the best we've ever tasted. I had a burger and it was cooked to perfection. We split the apple crumble with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Such delicious food, and at a very reasonable price, even for NYC. We'll definitely be back.

Great pub with wonderful service!

We went to Blackwells for my birthday dinner and had great food and drinks. Olivia, our waitress, was exceptional!

A good choice for a good meal

By Valleyblue |

Blackwell's is not a fancy place, but the food is really good. Our dishes came out hot, fresh, and very tasty. They have a good and varied selection that should satisfy everyone. We had entrees but the sandwiches sounded really good, too. Service is very fast, friendly, and attentive. It's a good place to go if time is tight, they bring out the meals quickly. To be honest, Blackwell's will never be amongst the top New York eateries, but it will satisfy you when you just want some good food at an average (for NYC) price. One warning, the place is pretty noisy, but worth a try.
