3 martini lunch is still alive

By runnerchicknyc |

This place is like going back in time and seeing the 3 martini lunch is still alive and well. Suits with their scotch and steaks rubbing elbows. Nice little bar area as well. If you want to look around and smell money with your lunch this is the place to go.

Meat haven

By tamyg |

Noisy, crowded, but the food is as promised. We took the "restaurant week" dinner of 38$ and it was generous and tasty. Service very attentive and fast. Baked clams, medallions of beef bordelaise, variety of breads and key lime pie, classic steakhouse menue at its best.

Average and Overpriced Food, Sub-Par Service

By MDM |

I'd made a reservation for two on OpenTable. At 5:00 pm on a Monday, the restaurant was deserted. Still, the smarmy maître d' led us through the empty restaurant to what had to be the worst table in the place, crammed between the kitchen door and a server's station. Then, inexplicably, he insisted I had requested that table in my online reservation. Repeated attempts to tell him I had not requested any particular table were ignored. He acted predictably annoyed when we insisted on sitting somewhere else. To me one of the best things they serve is a steakhouse burger for $24. But they don't list it on the menu and they act magnanimous when they "allow" you to order it. My friend had a salad and shrimp scampi for $60, so my half pound burger with thick-cut fries was definitely the better bargain. The house Malbec was plonk. The bread basket was generous but the rolls were all cold and slightly stale. They get away with the outrageous prices, bad wine, and sub-par service because of their location next to Grand Central. For the same price point you can have a better experience at pretty much any other steakhouse in Manhattan.

Good food but patronising service!

By TheOrignalDJ |

Exceptional quality food serving amazing steaks, however overpriced with very patronising service. The service will prevent me from revisiting this establishment due to the patronising nature.

Dinner

By Lori O |

We both had steak. Sirloin and petite filet. They were Excellent. All food is ordered ala carts $$$. It was food, VERY noisy.

Too expensive for very poor service

By NowMrJJ |

This place was recommended to us as one of the best steak houses ion town. We arrived to find a really nice setting and were greeted by a cheery and helpful member of the team. As we were seated we weren't disappointed but this soon changed. We were a party of four and were served by an older waiter who immediately came across as being quite rude and obnoxious. We ordered with little help from him. We had questions which he failed to answer very well and seemed annoyed that we were asking questions about the food/portion sizes etc. The food came and was good. Probably not worth the money though. All in all, if you want to pay way over the odds for good food then make a visit. If you don't care about good service then make a visit. If you really want to try a Bobby Vans, then find another - they are a chain. We will certainly not return on any future visits to NYC.

Amazing!

Amazing food amazing service, the best restaurant we found in NYC !! Nice atmosphere and managed to get a table with ease

Group of 10 for Dinner

By Sjwiden |

Came here on a recommendation with a group of 10 for a year end celebration dinner. Close to our hotel, the table was waiting when we go their and we were on a little time crunch needing to leave for a broadway show. The wine choices were perfect, my wife order the fillet Oscar and the lumps of crab were great, the steak was cooked perfect. I ordered the scallops and I must say they were the "best" ones I have ever had. Overall our group really enjoyed dinner and the service was great.

Great place for the best US meat

By Patrick G |

I was looking for a restaurant to invite my business partner and had a great experience with a sirloin steak well prepared and served. Restaurant is very well located close to main financial institutions. Good advice from servers regarding menu and wines. Not cheap but worth the price for the quality of food. I will return when I am again in NY.

finding the next steak house

By balz |

New York is the place to pursue the next steak house. There are so many, and so many are sooooooooooooo great, that its really hard, to say which one is the best. This time I tried Bobby Vans, at 230 Park. I was advised to go to this ones, as it is the original, where it all started. We had great service from our two waiters, terrific seafood appetizer(seafood tray) and a wonderful NY Strip, cooked to perfection. Definetely, is a place that I would return. Warning, it is not unexpensive, but then again, what NY steak house is. Enjoy.

Steak the Size of a Purse

By WorldSki |

But a lot better tasting. A serving brings a LOT of it to the table. Tender, perfectly seasoned, served in a classic setting basically in Grand Central Station. You can share a single order with some of their great sides. You could share between, well, 5-6 people. Maybe more. For a week or so. The salads look great, and could be a lot more manageable. Excellent service. Fairly loud dining rooms. The tables are close. The steaks almost touch. Price? High. But if you take home leftovers, you can feed the neighborhood.

Disgusting in every way

By TravellingSmithy |

Truly the worst food I encountered during my entire trip to New York. Really unhelpful staff too. Most was inedible and the servers didn't even enquire why most of it was left. Would not recommend!

Where I Go For A Steak When I’m New York

By Patrick Q |

In my opinion growing up in New York City when I went to go out family or friends for a great steak dinner I go to the Bobby Vans on Park Ave. While waiting for your table I recommend going to the bar for a drink, The bartender John O’Donnell whether you met him for the first time or hundred times makes you feel like a million bucks. Service and food are impeccable.

What happened to portion control?

By Caroline D |

Fantastic steak, didn't say weight on menu but covered half the plate, great flavor and perfectly cooked. The sides were huge, my friend ordered the fried onions, courgette and potato chips and that would have been a decent meal by itself. Staff were helpful and friendly and seemed to appreciate my English accent. Great location just by Grand Central station with a good and lively bar too.

Amazing steak

By carmennleroy |

staff was excellent, steak perfectly done, drinks were good. Beautiful décor, had sautéed spinach, filet mignon and hash brown

Excellent but expensive

By Bruce G |

Great food, great service, great wine list. What can I say? A terrific steak house (crab cakes are also excellent. However, also very noisy and very, very expensive. For a serious occasion, or, if you are on an expense account, go for it.

Great experience

By Johnny |

First time at Bobby Van's on Park Avenue. Very friendly welcome upon entering and seated immediately ! Terrific service especially from Milton who was terrific throughout. The four of us ordered steaks, they all came out just the way we ordered them. We knew that a large party had reserved the entire restaurant for holiday parties but we were never rushed. Will definitely go back. Great job Milton, a real gentleman ! Oh, and the coat check lady was terrific too. I wish I had her name.

End of a Relationship

By DCG |

For the past 15 years we have made a visit to Bobby Van’s on Park Avenue a bit of a ritual on each and every visit to NYC. A copy of their menu hangs in pride of place on our dining room wall and we regularly recommend it to others. It wasn’t just the food. It was the whole package. The warmth of the welcome and the friendly interaction with the incredible staff always made every visit an absolute pleasure. ....but not tonight. We were met by a tall Eastern European server who bore an uncanny resemblance to Zinedine Zidane - the recent manager of Real Madrid - and whose accent was so challenging that much of what he said was totally incomprehensible. No warmth or sincerity on display and he made us feel that serving us was an imposition rather than a pleasure. He made no attempt whatsoever to make us feel valued as customers or to find out anything about us. Very disappointing. The food was ok but lacked all the special touches which had previously set this restaurant apart from all the others for us. We felt let down and very disappointed. We are normally known in that restaurant as very generous tippers. On this occasion we left even less than the minimum recommended - which was an absolute first for us - and walked out the restaurant to the hollow sound of our own footsteps - no one at all taking the time to do us the courtesy of saying goodbye or thanking us for our custom. The staff will never realise just how important our visits to Bobby Van’s on Park Avenue were to us and just how much we looked forward to them. This will be our last visit. There is no longer anything here for us.

Perfect!

By roadstrainsplanes |

Excellent experience and of course the dinner was fantastic. The steak was cooked perfectly. If you prefer seafood, I recommend the scallops and salmon. You can't go wrong.

Delicious and good portions

By AsISeeThem |

I love a good steak and they don't disappoint! I especially like their sliced steak sandwich. The burgers are great too. Actually, I loved everything I've ever ordered here. Even their take out stuff is consistently good. Lenny (the manager) is wonderful and tries to comply with any requests. It's worth the money, and it's not cheap.

Everything great...but expensive

By gino23g10 |

Terrificly located just next to Grand Central, this restaurant has a very tasty steakhouse..if you think you can stand a 200 worth dinner...that's your place !!

Worth every penny

By SamGC |

We booked this last minute as we passed it on our way back to our hotel. It was a lovely evening, we didnt feel rushed & the food was superb. The service was informative, attentive but without being over the top. Yes it's a little pricey but the quality of the food was reflected in the price & we thought it was reasonable for the food & service we received.

Surprising great salads at a steak house

By GPBucket |

Normally I would order steak at a steak house, but I wanted to try something different - and healthy - for a business lunch. To my surprise, we both ordered salads and both raved about them. I ordered a "meal" portion of the Harry salad. The Harry salad was so delicious, that I didn't mind that it cost $38. The service was perfect too. I would definitely go back to Bobby Van's. Even though it's expensive, it's no more expensive than its competitors, and I haven't seen anything like the Harry salad anywhere else. Yes, it's that good.

Huge slabs of meat for large prices

By John L |

We had a retirement party for a valued colleague at Bobby Vann's in the Helmsley Building, my first venture into Manhattan Steakhouse World in quite a while. I had forgotten the rubrics: for a fairly large price one gets a huge slab of steak, sufficient to feed three normal men or perhaps one hungry tiger. If you want some veggies or potatoes, add ten bucks or so per ordinary item. The room for our party was cramped, and thank God no one had to use the loo, which would require the entire party to get up and virtually vacate the room. I guess that's supposed to be the charm of the Steakhouse qua Steakhouse, Personally I would prefer a normal human portion of mean [not nouvelle cuisine skimpy, just scaled to a normal adult male] and to be charged less. I feel this way because [1] I'm cheap and [2] I hate waste.

30th Anniversary at Bobby Van's was great!

By YkrsNative |

Ideally located and professional in every matter, Bobby Van's Park Avenue is just steps from Grand Central Terminal and not far from Rockerfeller Center and Times Square. The restaurant is pristine in its decor and the staff is there to cater to your every request. We were there to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and could not get enough of their goodwill in taking care of us. Seating was immediate upon arrival and drinks and bread were brought promptly. The menu is a listing of meats and seafood that makes it difficult to choose; we selected the sirloin and filet mignon and they were cooked to perfection. Along with creamed spinach and sauteed mushrooms it was a great meal. To top it off, the staff brought in a bread pudding with a candle and serenaded us with a "Happy Anniversary!" A great day with a great dining experience at Bobby Van's!

Not worth it!

By Std63nyc |

We had a business lunch here today and the food was average at best and in reality not much better than a diner. The pea soup tasted like it was straight out of a can and the crab cakes were the worst I have ever had! The steak my colleague had was overcooked and tough. there are much better steakhouses in NYC !!

Old school and very good

By Bruce W |

We first went here last December after walking out of the nearby Prime Grill when the wait in the chaotic lobby for a reserved table was exceeding 30 minutes. Then we got just about the last table as walk-ins. Fortunately we booked this time because it was packed. It lacks the glitz of Prime Grill. It is the traditional clubby type steak house, noisy enough but not frantic and showy which for us is a plus. The waiters seem to have been there for decades and one or two are a touch eccentric. The small filet mignon is big enough for any reasonable appetite and is perfectly cooked, medium rare throughout beyond the slightly charred surface. The prices are full steak house prices but unlike some other places it still feels like good value.

Fantastic steak - expensive drinks!

By Martin080 |

Travelling with my wife, my daughter & my niece as first timers to New York, a friend of my daughters recommended Bobby Vans for a steak and, as there were so many other highly rated alternative steakhouses, we went with the recommendation. Being pre-warned about the portion sizes we tried not to eat the bread, which was excellent with a few varieties, and held back on the side orders as well. This was a smart move as the steaks were bigger than we could ever have imagined, though in saying that, I utterly demolished mine! Excellent steaks and we just picked a bit at the side dishes, which were good but served in a mountainous pile in the middle of the table. No way we were going to clear that plate, even with 4 of us. We said we were too full for dessert and despite this we were presented with a sharing plate of desserts, fruits and cream which somehow we managed to eat. Well it would have been rude not to! Throughout the meal the waiters were very friendly and several of them chatted to us without being intrusive and added to the enjoyment of this dinner, which was our last meal in New York before heading for Boston the next day. The only disappointment in the whole evening came with the bill. I was more than happy to pay $50 for an excellent steak but my niece and daughter ordered brandy after the meal and we did ask for a drinks menu but were told they did not have one. We felt a bit ripped off to say the least when the bill had the brandies at $32 EACH! A previous reviewer comments on the 20% gratuity as the default at this restaurant. Our bill had 3 options, 15, 18 & 20%. Needless to say we gave 15% thanks to the brandies! I'm still glad we went with the recommendation to go to Bobby Vans as the food and the service were excellent and a good night was had by all. Just insist on a drinks menu if you go.

Great spot for a cocktail

By cjsmithnj |

We stopped in for a drink on a Friday afternoon. Service in the bar is excellent- good selections and priced for the neighborhood. Decor was typical NYC steakhouse. Smaller bar area but cozy and perfect for our purposes. Close walk to Grand Central and the Waldorf. Worth a stop for sure.

Just OK

By Schteve27 |

We always are in Manhattan time of year and always have one steak night usually at 2 other establishments. Thought we’d try Bobby Vans and dropped in without reservations. We were seated immediately. The bar area was bustling. Out cocktails were generous and well served. The bread was plentiful but dry. Our server while pleasant spent an inordinate amount of attention to one particular table. When we questioned him it was because they were drinking VERY expensive wines. Our bottle of Duckhorn was only $85 but still delicious and Shouldn’t count against us. The steak. Average. Tasty but small for the price. The sides of mashed potatoes were ice cold and sent back for “nuking”. The gelato was delicious. Overall OK. Not stellar. There’s better within a couple of blocks. Won’t be back.

A great place...but noisey

By Henry4218 |

We had what I thought would be an early dinner in NYC about 7pm. Bobby's was a short walk from our hotel. We were seated promptly. However, the din from the almost full restaurant made table conversation only possible in very loud tones. Steaks were fabulous & large. I had a piece of sea bass that was cooked perfectly & covered with an absolutely delicious sauce. Service was prompt and attentive. By the time we got our meals the crowd began to thin out and conversations were conducted without yelling. Clearly this is an early dinning place for people heading home afterwards.

Zero atmosphere

By DCCollaroy |

Visited Bobby Vans on Park Ave on a Saturday night after experiencing a couple of their other outlets in NYC. Zero atmosphere. Could have fired a canon through main dining area and not hit anyone. Steaks are extremely overpriced for what you get. Wait staff looked as bored as I was. Would not recommend this particular BV.

Overpriced coupled with poor service

By Laurence P |

We were recommended Bobby Van's during to a recent visit to NYC to celebrate a special occasion but came away sorely disappointed. The restaurant lacked any atmosphere while the food was way overpriced ... I've had plenty of better meals in bars for a fraction of the price. The food was solid but nothing spectacular. Our waiter seemed totally disinterested in serving us, failing to ask how our meals were or whether we required any drinks or dessert. I can't speak for the other Bobby Van's restaurants but I can't recommend this place.

Excellent steaks

By travelpro_d |

Classy restaurant with waiting area in the bar. Friendly waiters. 16 oz sirloin steaks well cooked to order. Sides and steak can me shared without problem due to the meal sizes offered.

Just “wow”, awesome food

By Stuart |

We wanted a special meal on our recent trip to New York and we were not disappointed. Great service and superb food. I had the special of the day, a ribeye steak. Quite pricey but worth every cent!! My wife had fish which she thoroughly enjoyed. Excellent wine meant it was the perfect meal and a great memory of the Big Apple

No wonder a top Steakhouse!

By IrishWanderer61 |

Passed up our regular haunt to try Bobby Van's....best decision we made after a great evening in NYC after a show at Radio City. If you're a beef lover you must go for the "Eye"....grilled to perfection! Little pricey on booze but overall a great visit.

Great place with steaks which are less great.

By Advents |

The location is top and the restaurant has that special "after office" flair. The service was very good and attentive. Red wine by the glas was priced acceptably and very good for an open wine. However, the sirloin steak lacked taste and texture. I have had much better ones for $57. I should have gone with the waiter's recommendation of steak a la stone....

Good Steak

By Nez D |

A little disappointed as they didn't have any lunch specials. The steak and sides were delicious but was not prepared to spend so much for lunch. The service was very good. The atmosphere is your typical NYC steakhouse - tables close, loud, ........

Expensive, but delicious, even good vegetarian options!

By milril44 |

Expensive, but delicious lunch. Seated quickly in a spacious back area. Service was excellent. Food was fresh and hot, came fairly fast and the portions are generous. Had a generous complimentary variety basket of breads, bread sticks and crackers with butter. Both the chicken parmigiana and eggplant parmigiana were delicious. Chicken parm was enough for three meals. The angel hair pasta was a good accompaniment to the heavier entrees. The hash brown potatoes were out of this world yummy, the size of a dinner plate and easily served four. Would definitely recommend and return!

Another NY steakhouse

By Varel F |

Good meat, reliable service. A bit on the loud and noisy side. However, nothing special...just a good steakhouse that does not manage to stand out from the crowd.

Bobby Van's

By motherbreezer |

Great Food, Service and Atmosphere. Highly recommended. Near to my residence which makes it covenient to walk to.

Everything a good steakhouse should be

By SixNineOne |

I arrived at Bobby Van's on Park Avenue at about 7pm on a Thursday evening and it was at full capacity. I didn't have a reservation but only had to wait about 15 minutes at the bar to get a table. That gave me a chance to soak up the vibrant atmosphere in the place. Although there was a good contingent of visitors, the majority seemed to be New Yorkers. The service was as you'd expect in a traditional New York steakhouse - waiting staff with a good few years on the clock but who still look after you very efficiently and with good humour. The reason you go to a steakhouse is to get a good steak and I'm amazed by how many steakhouses in New York and elsewhere think they can get away with serving indifferent meat. Not so at Bobby Van's, which certainly didn't disappoint. My Sirloin was fabulous - a generous piece of meat cooked just as I ordered, succulent and tender. I also ordered a side of french fries. I was dining solo, so I naively imagined I might get a portion for one. The waiter clearly thought otherwise, bringing me an enormous plateful, enough for at least four generous portions, so there's no danger of going hungry in this place! If you want a great steak in a vibrant atmosphere, head straight to this place!

Bobby Vans at JFK service is very slow

By lmcpht |

Regarding bobby Van's at JFK, Took 20 minutes from the time I sat down for someone to come and ask if I wanted a drink. Another 15 minutes for my lunch order. Almost 30 minutes from the time I placed my AMEX on the table. Horrible service with very average food.

PERFECT

By llizzi b |

Good food good prices on central park south perfect we had steak which was amazing and the seafood app with lobster and crabmeat

Steak Was Huge

By tjbaker49er |

Is hugest a word??? Because that is how best to describe the size of my steak. It was delicious... We had also ordered a pasta, calamari, mashed potatoes, lobster mac and gelato. All food was fantastic!! The portions were generous. The Gelato was not as good as the rest. The service lacked a little bit. We do not drink alcohol. We both ordered soft drinks, never were we offered refills. We took much to go in a bag, asked specifically for the bread, but they did not give any...

One of my favorites

By Andrew |

Much better than some of the more pretentious steak houses in the city. I usually go to the East 54th Street location but my wife and I tried this location for Valentines Day dinner when the other location was booked. Steak is excellent and service is impeccable. Love the lemon pepper shrimp. They recently took a few of my favorites off the menu so I had to dock them a star but seriously, you will enjoy your meal here. It is consistently good.

Overpriced steakhouse without real flavor

By Hsphoser36 |

We came in as a large group prior to a performance of the Rockettes. I haven't done the NY steakhouse experience yet, and ,unfortunately, this was more of a disappointment. The prices are overwhelmingly expensive, so I was anticipating both quality and quantity to be reasonable. The side dishes are a la carte, so we ordered several family style. I ordered the sirloin steak. I would have preferred a filet mignon, but I was concerned about the size of the meal. I hadn't eaten much all day and needed something substantial. The steak, when it came, was overcooked and under-seasoned. While I tried and quite enjoyed the filet mignon, the side dishes were also just average. Sides that we ordered included mashed potatoes, which tasted like a diluted puree, brussel sprouts, and asparagus. Neither of the greens blew me away. Overall, I will not return. I thought that we way over-payed for average food. To their credit, the restaurant is located close to Grand Central Station, on Park Avenue, and, mostly due to the cost of the meals, was quiet. That being said, there was almost no one there on a Thursday night, albeit the day after Christmas.

Typical Steakhouse

By NYCMike96 |

Typical New York Steakhouse. Not much ambiance. Good, expensive steaks and routine side dishes. Service was adequate. A little tricky to find, even for a New Yorker. If you are in the mood for a pricey steak, there are better options.

Old style steaks

By Igor K |

This restaurant serves real good and tasty fillet mignon. No doubts one of the best I have tried. Rather expensive. It's OK for the steak as they are unbelievable, but drink makes your bill much higher then it should be. Staff is very OK. Before we choose waiter brought to us fresh loafs of meat to show. I can recommend it to visit, but if you do not want to pay huge bill, keep an eye on prices for drinks.

Bobby vans at JFK airport

By Berlitz |

Had a stop over in JFK New York and visited this restaurant for a meal. Orders were taken quickly and service was fast and efficient even though the restaurant was busy. We both ordered steak and it was served as well done , which we requested.Plenty of side orders available from the menu and a good selection of draught beers and cocktails also. Price was reasonable for the amount of food served.

Pricey but Worth Every Cent

By Tuba4You |

Unfortunately it'll take a lot of "cents" here for a meal, but in spite of the pricey menu the food is simply fantastic. We dined here on a recommendation from a New Yorker I had met elsewhere, and his tip was right on. Can't say that I've ever had a better steak anywhere in the country. We've dined in many fine steak restaurants, but this meal was over the top. Everything about the food was superb, though we've been in quieter and more subdued eateries. It's a busy place, probably best you don't try it without a reservation. The service was impeccable and enough has been said about the quality of the food.

Biggest Rib Eye

By Kieran215 |

We have just dined in Bobby Vans and without a shadow of a doubt it awesome. Have the Rib Eye on the bone it was that big we didn't have a starter and shared main course Other reviewers have said its expensive but we didn't find that it's as expensive as you want it to be Well worth a visit device was also exceptional Thanks guys

A Great Steakhouse with Fast Service

By Scott95401 |

This is the ideal lunch spot for business people on a schedule. The ambiance is nice -- exactly what one would expect for a midtown eatery catering to a business crowd. The service is very friendly (if a bit formal) and very fast -- kind of amazing that they prepare good food that quickly. One can be in and out in an hour, easily. The food is delicious -- I've been here twice and had the filet minion once and the scallops (particularly good). Your waiter will likely suggest a spinach side -- in this case, take his or her advice. It is pricey, but it's got prime real estate in mid-town, so that's not very surprising.

Worth the Subway Ride

By retiredandtraveling5 |

There are lots of Bobby Van's Steak Houses in NYC. This one is at 25 Broad Street and an easy walk from the Wall St. subway stop (the block of construction work on the street to the entrance of the restaurant is not very appealing). However, the steak is excellent (USDA Prime) and cooked to perfection. If you order sides, they are generous and more than enough to share. If you think you can't live without an appetizer (be prepared to take home part of your entree) try the delicious grilled octopus salad or the tuna tartare (prepared on a mound of chopped avocado). Their lettuce wedge and spinach salads are also worth trying! Although the menu includes wraps, seafood, and less expensive entrees, expect to spend approximately $200 for two glasses of wine, two appetizers, two incredibly delicious, large steaks, rib eyes, or fillet mignons, and two sides. And yes, we shared one of the chef's special apple streusels! Baked and perfectly seasoned! By the Way: the maitre de and wait staff are very courteous, attentive, and professional. NOTE: Since this Bobby Van is away from the theater district, they often advertise on Groupon offering a Saturday night $200 coupon for $100 to get you down to the Wall Street area so keep your eyes open for this deal.

Still my favorite

By Andrew D |

This is still my 'go to' steakhouse in New York City. Never disappoints with awesome cuts of meat and a great selection of sides to share. The portions are humongous so order to share, otherwise you will have a heavy doggie-bag. Sometimes they have pretty good deals on the wine list.

Expect the best

By genehunt73 |

My lady and me visited for the first time, and we were blown away by the professional service and attitude from the off, the menu, memorized throughout, said it all for me, we had steak and red wine ....all I can say is check it out, tell them how u want it, and bingo

Excellent

Was in NYC for my birthday and went there for dinner. Excellent waitstaff abdominal food. Absolutely no negatives here.

Disappointing

By Clive1234x |

Sadly rather disappointing. looks good from the outside and good décor inside. they were not busy but service was poor, staff somewhat disinterested although our waitress was OK. Food OK but prices too high

Great food!

By DTraveler |

Nice atmosphere... dark furniture, low lighting. Food was awesome... steak cooked to perfection! Waiter was not very attentive despite the restaurant not being crowded at the time. Nonetheless... I would return and recommend to others.

Pleasantly Surprised

By Battleship12 |

Had an early business dinner on a Friday night in December. Table was great and the service was accommodating. Steaks were perfect and overall experience was very positive. Would recommend.

Best food & service in two years

By CElliott30 |

We had a change in plans and called the restaurant to see if we could come in much earlier than our reservation. They warmly rearranged tables to fit our party of nine. It was a great dinner to cap off a special day! The steak was amazing and the veal was as Sollazzo would say, the best in the city. Thanks gentlemen!!!

Service

By 855machelleh |

Outstanding place, food was absolutely beautiful. We had a group of nine and requested a late booking which they happily did. The service was outstanding. Would highly recommend this place. They even offered to take a group photo for us.If In New York go here the meals are huge and delicious.

Good But Should Be Better!

By adam r |

I had a lunch here last week with a friend from out of town. I ordered the shrimp scampi - 4 nice size shrimps. Too lemony no garlic. if the chef would have browned a little garlic and garnished the plate it would have made a world of difference. It was good but not great! They had a special which was slab bacon grilled. Although this is a copy of the famous Peter Lugers, I don't hold it against them. Itw as very good but they served it with mustard seeds. A good sweet steak sauce is more appropriate in my opinion. The petite filet was good but for $44 just for the petite filet it should be better than good. All in all the place was good but for the money I am giving my lunch a thumbs down! very pricey at the park ave. location. if you're going to charge people these prices get your sh!*&t together Bobby Vans!

Stunning food and fantastic customer service

By DessyMe |

Delicious food and outstanding service so grateful for friends recommendation we will definitely be back soon! We shared shrimp & cooked oysters to start served with plenty of fresh bread to soak up the scrumptious sauce. We then all had steaks with plenty of sides and sauces, we all asked for steaks to be cooked differently which they were and we all agreed it was a beautiful meal and the mashed potatoes were something special! Thank you to the guys serving us nothing was too much trouble and we really felt looked after, fantastic customer service.

Great steak but hold on to your wallet

By RichardVUK |

Ate here with friends. Not sure how they picked it and it was quite hard to find. I was directed to 230 Park and this turned out to be an office building. However, just across the road there is another bit of the same building hosting Bobby Van's Steakhouse. The ambience is good and the steaks excellent. Service was on the ball mostly and the wine list was very good with both American and European wines on offer, though at a considerable price. I had the lemon pepper shrimp which I thought was a bit over salted but the filet mignon was outstanding. The bill came to about $160 per head after the inevitable taxes and over inflated tips, but it was a very good meal. Can't say it was great value for money but I would go there again as the steak does merit a second visit!

Not a bad choice for a business lunch. Entertained a client here recently and it fit all the requirements. Professional waiters, range of food options and tables far enough apart so as not to overhear one another yet the noise in the space was low enough to be easily heard.

Top experience!

By Jsusin |

We come to BV Steakhouse by coincidence, but we were really pleasantly surprised. The food is amazing, the staff also, not to mention their excellent choice of whiskies... We will definitely come back. It is pricey, but worth every $!

Disappointed

By Amy B |

Concierge recommended the restaurant and made our reservation. I read some of the other reviews and it appears most people loved it so maybe our experience was just a fluke... it happens. Unfortunately, my review is not as glowing; with the exception of our server. He was very nice and professional. We both ordered the sea bass upon his recommendation. They looked beautiful upon presentation at the table, but as soon as I bit into it I realized it was raw in the middle. They both had to be sent back and cooked more. I never send food back but this one I couldn't overlook. It was fine when it returned, but after that happens it kind of changes the whole experience. I don't know that I'd go out of my way to return given all the steakhouse options around, but I wouldn't necessarily say don't go either. I guess next time I'd order the steak, though. If I'm going to spend that kind of money I just want it to come out cooked perfectly.

New York Steaks!

By Alex031277 |

This Bobby Van's is definitely worth your visit. The service is impeccable and the atmosphere is something to talk about. The choice of dishes was extensive and so was the wine list. We started our dinner with an aperitif which set us up for the night! The steak was slightly overcooked but still very tasty. The salmon was excellent and when asked for a slight alteration on the side order, the chef was more than willing to oblige. In all a very pleasant experience in Manhattan.

Magique !

The staff is amazingly kind and helpful. A great place in NYC. Un vrai bonheur de voir du personnel si gentil.

Incredible Meal ! SOFT SHELL CRABS !!!!

By Shitzky |

Soft Shell Crabs were on the special board this evening. I have never had better prepared sold shells in my life. Pan fried and very crispy without any sauce. Incredible. Great sides and very good service. The only thing that is annoying is ...the tables are so close together, the noise level is quite high causing conversation to be strained. But, the crabs are excellent

Steak lovers' must

By szistanbul2014 |

Service and food were both great. The restaurant was quite noisy. Definitely not a place for a quiet dinner.

Beyond excellent food and service

By agnes9971 |

Friendly host gave us a lovely table in the back away from noise at west 45 St. Waitstaff is friendly and helpful. Food is absolutely superb. Scallops and gnocchi to share along with beet salad proved to be a prefect meal. Everything was simply prefect. As for cocktails, they make the best cosmos and lemon drop martinis in town. Hands down. Delish

Very good but expensive

By SuzieQCPE |

Crab cakes were delicious with chunks of crab. Filet mignon and prime were cooked to taste. Slightly charred in spots but not dry which is the way i love it. Mashed potatoes and creamed spinach were not large portions but were also delicious and can be shared between two ppl or three if u order a few sides. Chocolate mouse cake was very rich and needs to be shared. Four ppl- one soda, one app, two sides, four steaks and two desserts came to $325. Plus a tip total $390. A little pricy at 100 per person

Fantastic Steak

By SueandStu2 |

Couldn't have been more accommodating. We were there on a Sat night, not too crowded. The waiter was very attentive. We had their delicious homemade chips, only served at the bar, but fantastic. My Cosmo was just perfect. Steak cooked to perfection. Salad and asparagus just right. Dessert was tiramisu and they gave us some cheesecake to sample too. Cappuccino served in a china cup, just as I like it. Most enjoyable evening.

A real treat

By Dukeatbrays |

Met another couple for dinner. Started with great salads followed by steaks. The main courses and sides were excellent. We shared a wonderful carrot cake dessert. And we had take home steak for lunch the next day!! Service by Michael was outstanding. All is well, except maybe your depleted wallet!

Dinner and what an amazing meal it was.

By Manxie1951 |

We went here one evening for dinner, the place was very busy, 1st thing I noticed when been shown to our table was some guy who had just had a rib of beef served, it was HUGE, enough for a small family, we got the menu's and a drink, we both ordered fillet steaks and after seeing the portions decided to get 1 portion of sides between us, we choose onion rings, mash (as we were sick of fries everywhere) mushrooms, Asparagus. Our food arrived and the stakes were massive, really HUGE, as were the portions of sides. Everything was delicious and we failed to finish everything, I would certainly go again.

My favorite animal is steak

By Oliver S |

I did not say this, Fran Lebowitz did. But I agree wholeheartedly. So, when a friend gave me a call today to offer lunch at Bobby Van's (he shared that his blood pressure was low and his doctor recommended steak and red wine, I immediately wanted the name of his doctor), I agreed. Surprisingly enough, I've walked out of Grand Central by this place thousands of times but never entered it. A late lunch brought the following observations: STEAKS: good, but not great. The cut had extraordinary amount of fat and tendons and it did not taste really aged. Plus, they all came at the same temperature, even though we ordered one Medium rare and one Medium. Definitely not a $60 steak. OTHER FOOD: it's all extra, count on $10-$15 for each side. Tomatoes and Onions salad (three slices of each) was great ($16.50). Olive oil good, but not great. Bread basket full with different varieties of STALE bread and crackers. WINE LIST: good, but not great, very few choices for wine by the glass (my friend did not drink, disregarding his doctor's prescription). $19 for half a glass of mediocre Californian Merlot seems to be a bit overpriced, even considering the prime location. SERVICE: hit and miss. Our waiter was OK, except when he disappeared for a long time. The wine Stewart was snobbishly condescending, at times right down insulting, and I wish you could see the mess left on the table when they picked up the dirty dishes. Oh, and I love it when I am being addressed as “folks” especially at these prices! All in all, not a good experience, not going back there. I'd rather have my steaks at Keen's (separate review). Or Gallagher's. In fact, even Smith & Wollensky is better, although they too have service problems.

The original Bobby Van's, this is it. It feels like the first one and makes the others feel like a chain.

By BSWTRAVELS10 |

I have been to many other Bobby Van's restaurants around the city but this one, the original we discovered about 30 years ago. I must say this is the best one to go to and enjoy. The staff is so nice and accommodating. It is a loud restaurant but never disappointing

The best wine waiter Ever

By Dexter5858 |

Omg i don't think I've ever had a steak so huge and cooked so perfect ever, the food was just amazing and we asked for a New Zealand red Wine Again omg Mishas pinot noir was recommended by the wine waiter he was amazing and the wine was to die for, wonderful atmosphere, great service and all with a warm smile and so very polite, guys you made us both feel so special and didn't even know it we will be back later in the year for more wonderful food

Great steakhouse

By Alain L |

Went at lunch time. I did not have a steak but my friends did order the porterhouse for two and raved about it. My self I had the veal milanese which was ok. Wife has the burger which was some overcooked. The side of onions rings and zucchini fries was large, enough for 4 but not that extra. They seems to prioritize size over quality to justify the high prices. Indeed, the portions are huges. $250 for 4.

Absolutely fabulous

By eefthimiou |

For meat lovers this place offers a different dimension in the experience. Perfect cooking exact to your order, even the temperature you would like your steak . The meat was tender, full of flavour smell and taste. Every sense of the body was stimulated , including the hearing which was the only issue as the restaurant was noisy which was the only negative. The waiters were very professional and their service five star . The hidden gem was their Caesar salad which was absolutely fabulous. If you are in New York and looking for something really unique it is the place to eat. Price for a couple was $170 without the tip drinks included which was totally reasonable . Definitely will go back.

Girls business trip to NYC

This restaurant was recommended by my friend. I have been to Nyc many times and have never been. What a wonderful surprise it was!!! From the moment we walked in til the time we left, Sam our waiter took great care of us!! The food was amazing!! Great steaks and wine list! We will be back!!

the Original Porterhouse

the steak and service was so good that a few days later i had another go in their JFK branch you should try their own steak sauce, but personally i prefer my steak sic

Fantastic food!

By LaylaDaisyWing |

We had an amazing meal in bobby vans while on a city break in New York. I ordered a sirloin steak which was rather large but very tasty. My boyfriend ordered a T-bone steak which was huge but he said was very good and tasty. We ordered sides of chips and onion rings, which were also very tasty but the portions were very big. We enjoyed the evening very much. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was busy but not too over crowded. The meal was expensive but worth it.

A great, if expensive experience

By T0ny_UK |

Great atmosphere, very attentive service. Fantastic (huge) rib-eye, cooked to perfection - up there with the best. Would be 5 stars if it wasn't so expensive.

Superb as always

By Kevclarke100 |

Every time i've been to this place i've always had a superb meal. Great service, great food and great wine recommendations!

Yum

By KiKi K |

A last minute suggestion by our concierge and it was a fantastic one. I had the chicken and my husband the Chilean sea bass - will be craving these dishes ! Known for their steaks, so next time will try those !

What you would expect

By datawest20 |

Top quality steak house on a par with Morton's, Sparks and Palm. Do not each that much steak but appreciate a good filet. Be careful of the portion sizes. The filet is 16 oz and the petite filet is 9 ounces. Wait staff attentive, sides well prepared. All three meals came out the same time. The room is pretty noisy despite there being adequate space between tables. Lots of well dressed businessmen screaming to be heard over the din. Bring your wallet though. Three buddies with drinks $420 including tip and NO wine. Bushmills on the rocks at the bar was $18.

Excellent restuarant

By Frank F |

Very good service with extensive wine list. Enjoyed soft shell crabs - probably the best I have ever eaten. Colleagues have steak and also had rave reviews. Good, but traditional list of sides. Overall a very enjoyable lunch.

Great food poor service

By Jon Per Persent |

The food was generally very good, while the service was terrible - especially how they handled payment. Just from another world!

It takes full commitment

By RunTigerRun |

Been there with a large group. Service was at the beginning very good (seating) but as soon as it turned out that we were not there to eat in the top range of the menu or only steaks interest in us seemed to decline sharply. Food quality was OK. Overall a mixed experience.

Great Steaks

By Jill V |

We visited to celebrate a birthday and had the pork chops, they were a think cut with lots of flavor and the sirloin. The entrees are served alone, side dishes are $11.75 extra, but the portions on the sides are large enough for 2 people to share. We had asparagus, it was tender and flavorful and mash potatoes.. Service was pretty good (though I did have to go refill my own water once). The meals were filling and tasty. A little pricey but that’s typical New York.

Bit of a con.

By Sunnys fan |

Bobby Vanns JFK airport.Bit of a con really at this restaurant. If you're a priority card holder. It basically tells you on a card re the holder is entitled to a discount. They take the card away. The food was emence and plentiful. The service was good. However it was mared by the bill. Which showed that they had taken away the priority card charge. However the charges were put on my priority card bill. So in a sense I ended up paying more. An Was NO benefit at all. I only went in to the restaurant because there is no lounges for priority card holders. Would go back but not used the PC card

Lovely evening to celebrate our 25th Anniversary

By Tricia S |

Arrived to be seated at our reserved table. Waiters very knowledgeable and helpful with menu choices. Starters chosen included squid, crab cake and crab cocktail. All delicious, squid VERY large portions but tasty. Then to the main course, 3 meat eaters enjoyed delicious steaks and I had the special fish dish. All served beautifully and tasty! Lovely evening in a traditional NY steak house.

Dinner in the vault

By guidothecat |

Our dinner for 30 people in the vault was superior. The staff was especially attentive to our guests. For a group that large, the food was served promptly and well prepared. That is difficult to do. They were very efficient and friendly. The food was high quality and the beverages exceeded expectations. Pre-dinner appetizers were nicely prepared and presented. Highly recommend.

One of the best in the city

By sroma1 |

One of the most flavorful & tender filet mignons I have ever eaten. Old school charm. Amazingly attentive service. An all around excellent dining experience.

Disappointing experience

By Cedar880 |

Came here to catch up with an old friend. Sorry to say that it was a disappointing evening. Tables were so close together and the noise level was so high that we could hardly hear each other. The bill was over $160/head even though we shared the steak. Service was inattentive, perhaps because it was so crowded. Food was fine, but not worth the price and the aggravation. Will not be back.

Good service in NYC

By GlobalVilla9er |

I went with a group of people, so I was able to try a variety of dishes. The Sweet Chili Calamari was excellent. Salad was very good. The side order of bacon was gluttonous, but fantastic. Tomato and Mozzarella was also nice. The steaks were obviously good, but not incredible. All in all, I was quite happy with the dinner. Our service was very helpful and friendly, which is not always the norm for a NYC restaurant.

Oh So New York

By Lee |

Bobby Van's Steak House was a nice place to conduct a business lunch with the food being exceptional however, the waiter was a stereo type out of a Sopranos episode or the movie Goodfellas. The rudeness of the waiter started with our drink order when he seemed offended when we ordered water. My guest actually commented on his rudeness and said "typical New Yorker" which was highly embarrassing for me. Especially, since New York is my home and my business guest was visiting from England. I ordered the soup of the day, split pea soup, which was excellent and my guest ordered the sesame crusted tuna as appetizers. Both were prepared perfectly. We both ordered petite sirloins and they were seasoned and cooked perfectly. Best steak I have had in a restaurant in a long time. Also, we shared a side of sautéed spinach which was heavenly. Throughout this dining experience the service was extremely average. Recommendation: Take your business $$ somewhere else as there are a lot of steak houses on Park Ave. However, it is a great place when looking for a better than average meal.

Soooo Good

By Anthony |

I don't know what to say other than the food was fantastic. Went to dinner with my brother before a Rush concert and we sample a lot of dishes. Everything was great. Very pleased.

Unbelievable Steak and Service

By kevko76 |

This restaurant is amazing. Went last week with a large party, the service was amazing. The waiter suggestions were spot on... everyone loved it. Even the 2 kids in our group. The steaks full of flavor, and tender as can be... and the desserts... make sure you save some room.

Fabulous

By mssrfoie |

This is the "real" NYC steakhouse. Great wine, food and service. The veal chop was perfect, the sides were huge and the wine list extensive.

Wall Street guys after work

By RICHARD |

Met up with some Wall Street associates after work today (Tuesday) and decided impromptu to dine at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse located at 230 Park Avenue in New York City. We sat at a table set for 5 to dine and two of us including me ordered cocktails, another a Diet Coke and 2 others red wine. A basket of breads which consisted of mostly crusty Italian appeared on the table with a side of fresh salted butter and both were top notch. Appetizers followed : baked clams with bacon strips and shrimp scampi were shared and consisted of fresh fish well prepared and quite tasty. Steaks, pork chops, veal parmigiana, creamed spinach and roasted brussel sprouts were our main courses all of which were good however not great so to speak. These steakhouses appear cookie-cutter and in my opinion vary little one to another. That said it was a decent meal.

Last night..

By Cath E |

Our last night in new York wanted to push the boat out. Met all expectations and more. Food outstanding . Pricey but worth every cent.

Dinner with our Family

By Georgie’s Momma |

Bobby Van's is and always will be a favorite of our family's in NYC. It was where I was convinced by a very wise family friend to move home and re-join my family business and we now, as a whole family, went back on our trip for the NYS Beer Wholesalers meetings. Claudio is a very wonderful person on your team and made my niece and nephew very comfortable and talked to them every time he went by our table. He waited on us last year in October for our meetings and it is great to know he is still there! We didn't have him this time, but the food was great like usual and they were SO good to the kids. After a very long day of school and then traveling into the city, they were incredibly tired, but they really enjoyed their dinners (my Brother says you have some of the greatest chicken fingers going). Thank you for being so good to my family.

Excellent steak

By Alvaro E |

Knowing that I'm from Uruguay and a great steak lover, one of my colleagues invited me for lunch at Bobby Van's earlier in the week during a business trip to NY. The restaurant itself is very nice, classic decor, but you step in from the street you can already smell the steak......really great sensation. I had a sirloin steak and my colleague bone-in one and both were great. As sides asparagus and onion rings. Everything was great. I must say that living in Europe I got used to smaller portions, so if really not extremely hungry I suggest to share some portions, because here are extremely big. At last the sides. Service was great, very attentive and friendly staff. Definitely a place I will return on my next trip to NY.

Very good food, nice staff

By Mexx |

The food is excellent, the restaurant very nice as well as the staff! A must if you like good fresh meat!

Nice service but the food was extremely average

By Anne C |

This is one of a number of locations in NYC (plus two in Washington DC), and this particular location is right next to Grand Central Terminal. It has the classic steakhouse atmosphere with white tablecloths and wooden floors and tables. When we arrived for our reservation we could barely walk in the door as it was jam packed with what turned out to be a lot of people standing around drinking after a funeral. Thankfully we got seated in a quiet room towards the back. Our server was energetic and efficient and was wearing those steakhouse smocks. He was great. However, unfortunately, the food did not match his abilities. We split a mixed green salad with gorgonzola. I don't know how my hubby ate his -- the mixed greens were slimy and within hours would have qualified for the compost pile. The gorgonzola was flavorless, possibly because it was granulated in such tiny specks that I wouldn't even know what they were. My filet mignon had good texture but was also not that tasty, although the accompanying bearnaise sauce helped. The mashed potatoes were not that potato-ey. Hubby's ribeye was similarly average. There are a number of better steakhouses in New York.

Had a going away dinner here for a colleague....quite nice

By FamFunIllinois |

As with most steak houses in NY this one is loud with attentive but gruff staff.....I guess it adds to the charm? Our guys was nice and was there when we needed him. It was a group of 6 and everyone was pleased with the food they were served. Most had steaks and they were excellent. The group sides were also excellent. Tough to do business given how loud it was but worth a repeat with friends.

Great Meal with Superb Service

By MustangRoxie |

Bobby Van's is a high end Steakhouse similar to The Palm without the pasta offerings. There were no surprises for our party of 8 in NYC. The food was excellent between filets, pork chops, sea bass, spinach, hash browns, brussel sprouts, mashed potatoes, and various salads. The portions are huge and will make the biggest of meat eaters SMILE! Service was great! The bill was very pricey, but what you would expect from an excellent Steakhouse in the Big Apple.

Good Food, like Bobby Van's on 50th better

By TLH61293 |

We love the filet at Bobby Van's and normally go to the one on 50th street. Additionally my daughter is a celiac and I have a seafood allergy and they are normally great in accommodating. We were staying nearby so we thought we'd try this one. Overall the atmosphere is not as rich, it's more cookie cutter steak house. Our first waiter, yes we ended up with two different waiters, not explanation why as our original waiter was still working the dining room. Anyway our first waiter was less then interested in our food issues so I was nervous for my daughter that he would communicate it correctly to the Chef. When we got our steaks with a side of what I assume was a Bearnaise sauce I was surprised because in the past neither of us gets a sauce so I asked if it was GF and free of fish or shellfish (most do in fact have anchovies) his response was that he thought it was Gluten Free, but was surprised when I asked if it was seafood free so I explained that many sauces are made with Worcestershire or soy sauce which can contain fish so he said he suggested I don't eat it. I asked if he could ask the chef if it was safe for either of us and he essentially walked away without responding. We essentially gave up. Shortly after that the second waiter working took over our table. We waited a while for desert, also was not sure what if any were GF so he suggested the sorbet which my daughter had only to be brought out in a beautiful chocolate dipped waffle bowl. Clearly not Gluten Free, he quickly brought it back and brought her the Sorbet in a regular bowl and the manager came and apologized. Then ended up comping the desserts which was very nice. Overall the food was excellent, but if you have a food allergy or dietary issue you might want to try one of the other Bobby Van's. Also if your looking for more ambiance, try the one on 50th.

Great steak and brilliant service

By Rupert C |

A midweek dinner. We arrived without a reservation, the hostess was very welcoming and gave us a choice of a couple of tables. The waiter was very upbeat and welcoming. Having been before I knew that the sides are large so we went light on the starters and the waiter recommended half orders of fries and broccoli (so in theory a serving for one person). The starters we selected were the sesame tuna and the beef carpaccio. Both were amazing, not too large. The wasabi with the tuna was incredibly hot, but amazingly tasty (go easy if you order - lesson learnt). The steaks then arrived, sirloin and t-bone. Both perfectly cooked as ordered, very good quality meat. Larger than we usually get in the uk. The sides were still huge.....we didn’t manage to finish them. And no chance we could manage a dessert. This was a follow up visit for me and the place did not disappoint, my partners first visit and absolutely loved. My favourite steak restaurant. The place has a nice buzz to it and all the staff are charming and attentive. Really good value when compared to somewhere of this quality and style in the uk. Well worth a visit.

exceptional

By jdscal |

one of the best meals we have had. the steak could cut with a fork. the pea soup was exceptional. the tuna was perfect and the cheesecake was perfect. this is not a cheap place but it is exceptional. I had wiped by forehead with my napkin and a waiter arrives with a new napkin. they are attentive but not intrusive. they recommend a great local beer and had a good call on a white and red wine. nice job.

Sidewalk Cafe and Upscale Dining All Rolled Into One Lovely Restaurant

By Cheryl K |

Located at 40 Central Park (near The Plaza and Park Lane Hotels), this lovely, casual, small restaurant offers excellent pasta dishes, especially the spaghetti carbonara, steaks, pizzas, salads, and more. Daily features are outstanding. One of our party is a vegetarian and they easily created a dinner tailored to her preferences. There are a few tables just outside the front door that face Central Park. Guests are greeted by exceptionally friendly staff and service is as good as the food. We chose this restaurant for two evenings on a short trip to NYC because we had such a delightful experience the first night we were in the city. On the second visit, we decided to try happy hour at the bar (which seats only 6-8) and ended up getting to know four delightful "regulars" who made our dining experience even more enjoyable! I believe the restaurant is open for breakfast as well as lunch, although we didn't try either. Moderately priced for the quality and ambience. We recommend it highly!

Great meal

Had a couple of great dinners ....mostly steak....very well prepared. Good salads and desserts as well.

GREAT Steak

By carolandchuck750 |

Great food, the steak melted in your month. Steaks were HUGE but everything was amazing. Within walking distance of our hotel, when to dinner after seeing the Lion King. Service was fantastic. I had the caprese salad, OMG is all I can say...LOVED IT. Can you go to New York without having New York Cheesecake, save room.....it was fabulous. Does it cost more than a meal at the Outback, yes but it is an amazing meal, in this case you get what you pay for. If you want a so so meal go to a chain steak house, your in New York live a little. I would highly recommend.

Great food but expensive

By Michael W |

Had lunch here with a couple of colleagues. Service prompt and food very good. I have to say I was a bit shocked at an average of around $40 for a lunch entrée though.

Excellent

By jewboy111 |

Outstanding place we have arrived without Reservation for lunch the place was packed but we were seated very quickly the service was great very good sea food tower and excellent t bone steak very big portions nice atmosphere very good experience

Great steakhouse atmosphere but not quite what it should be

By Jim Aiello |

Wonderful service and midtown steakhouse atmosphere that was equally tasty and satisfying, though not quite the level you would expect at those prices.

Top notch lunch

By Rita E |

For a celebratory business and relationship lunch, it's hard to imagine a better choice. Perfectly prepared lamb chops (portion really too large), and side vegetables (asparagus and mushrooms) both luscious. Well mixed drinks. Friendly, efficient waiter. Nice overall presentation. Only down size was that the noise level was a little much, but really about what you would expect for a busy lunch day. Pricey, but near flawless experience made it worth it.

Solid Steakhouse---- Great Midtown location

By BondJ007 |

just finished lunch. A+ filet.....cooked perfectly. Classic steakhouse ambience....lots of wood......all male waitstaff. Pricey....but hey....this is New York City. The marinated asparagus was a terrific app. Perfect for " business" lunches or dinners.

Dropped in with no reservations!

By LynnVHS |

I would recommend reservations but we took a chance having been to Rockefeller Center and wanted to eat before taking the train home. They were very accommodating and our meals were excellent. The grilled sea scallops were nice and large and perfectly cooked. Shrimp scampi was the same. A Cesar salad and sides of asparagus and onion rings met expectations too. Service was attentive.

Smaller portions would go a long way

By Abergth27 |

This place was still bustling at 9:30pm on a Wednesday night - the food is very good, however the portion sizes are huge and the prices comparable to the oversized plates. Good service and overall a good experience, but would rather spend my money at a local place with reasonable portions than this chain with so much waste.

Expensive and average food

By sjhHove |

This is an old fashioned New York steakhouse, with a pleasant bar and a simple dining room on the corner of the Helmsley building. We had two petite filets at $46 each! They were tender but under seasoned. The bearnaise was good, but my side of asparagus was so absurdly large it could have fed four. Staff were pleasant enough, bread fresh and the beer and wine what you'd expect, but overall the experience wasn't special and for these prices I'd expect that, particularly when you add in taxes and service.

Old world elegance

We went by Bobby Vans steak house to get the correct vibe on before going to see Jersey Boys on stage. Great steaks, good service and a reasonable price made for a great evening!

The most reliable chopice-Especially at the holidays

By Jeff S |

I reviewed this restaurant a few months ago and I could cut and paste it. Again, pleasant to have a woman server, especially one as good as ours with a typical New York attitude and dry sense of humor. A female version of John, the Bass gravel- voiced barman, a fixture here. But it was packed with office holiday celebrations, appropriately loud and boisterous. Yet the servers navigated speedily like ships in an iceberg field and never missed a service beat because of the crowds at 6:30 pm. (Yes I know we never eat at that time either but we had a lot of catching up to do). My Petite Filet was predictably perfectly cooked medium rare as was my guest's real man's 14 oz Filet and as usual, quality meat. I still believe their sides are the best in New York with the sauteed mushrooms a required order and either of the two spinach preparations highly recommended. My other guest had the Chicken Parm, why she did this in s steakhouse is her business I guess but she thoroughly enjoyed it.

Best meal ever!

By Michael C |

Me and my friend come across this place by chance and we both said it’s the best meal we’ve had! Food was excellent and service was great! Maybe tad on pricey side but hey we ordered most expensive steaks with all trimmings and was worth it, got to treat yourself every now and again! Would highly recommend

A birthday celebration at Bobby Van's Park Avenue!

By YkrsNative |

Came here with my brother-in-law and his sons for his birthday--and we could not have been treated any better than on this evening. As we arrived early on Saturday evening, we had the pick of most of the tables and chose one by the windows looking out onto Park Avenue. Getting here from the suburbs and outer boroughs is easy as Grand Central Terminal and the subways is within walking distance of the restaurant (parking is challenging and expensive). The waitstaff is professional and caring and saw to all our needs. The menu is spectacular, with a variety of meats, seafood and sides; we chose the porterhouse for four with spinach and mashed potatoes and everyone was well fed at the end. This Bobby Van's Park Avenue knows how to take care of its customers!

Good food but high prices given the patronizing, inattentive wait staff, lack of information on wines by the glass

By pollym18 |

Two other women and I dined on a Friday night in October looking for good food and nice atmosphere near the Yale Club where we were staying for a reunion of college friends. Restaurant was less than half full when we arrived for our 7:30 pm reservation, yet there was an abundance of staff, all male. Our waiter was extremely patronizing, told us there was no listing of wine by the glass. When we asked what was available, he responded "red, white, rose, the usual" with no information on brand, year, origin, etc. When we asked where the red wines were from, he responded "California" with no further information. Bobby Vans is not welcoming to women, seems like a spot that caters to Wall Street regulars and does not desire other patrons. The glass of Malbec I ordered tasted inexpensive.

Amazing!

By danielleee90 |

The food here is amazing! Slightly over priced. The staff defiantly Jude you on your appearance to dress smart. We met a couple there and the waiter lied and said they don't have a wine list until her partner showed up. Rather rude! But the food was amazing so if you don't mind all that, go for it !

From the moment you walk in Their Hospitality game is on! I have been here before and had a fabulous Rib Eye Pittsburgh style which is seared on the outside and med rare-rare on the inside- I prefer med-rare! It was excellent! This time I went back for their awesome burger! Not on the menu but Ofcourse they will make one !! Perfectly cooked med-rare and crusty on the outside- just delicious! The Caesar Salad was perfect too! The staff adds to the whole experience they are all so kind and friendly and make you feel known! I will be back again and again !!

Business, Business

Being surrounded by titans of all industry one knows what to expect from this special place. The tables are small and cramped. But this piece of real estate does not come without a price! Great drinks, expensive wines, wonderfull steaks! Top notch sides!

Good Food

By NboroGirl |

This was our first visit to this restaurant. We chose this place because we wanted someplace near Rockefeller Center and Grand Central Terminal, and this was one of a handful restaurants had had open reservation times on OpenTable. It was a physically appealing restaurant - nice decor with a European look, but it was very loud inside. My husband, son, and I arrived early and were promptly seated. They ordered soft drinks, I only wanted water. I was brought a 32 ounce bottle of imported water. Tap was what I wanted, especially after being charged $16 for 2 bottles of water. I later saw other waiters filling water glasses at other tables with pitchers of water. Why I had to pay for water I don't understand, but that didn't sit well with me. The food is very good, the portions are much too big, and the service was good, but not very friendly. I ordered the hearts of lettuce & tomato for my salad. It was very, very large, but fresh and tasty. For my entree, I ordered petit filet mignon, medium. I like my steak pink throughout, but I got red in the center, pink around the edges. I showed it to my waiter and informed him I wanted my steak medium and he insisted it was medium. Maybe at that restaurant, but not at any other steakhouse I've ever eaten at, so I sent it back to be cooked a little more. They were quick at returning it to me cooked the way I wanted. It was large for a petit cut, tender, and flavorful. It was served with a side of Bearnaise sauce. I also tried the Bobby Van's bottled sauce on the table, which I liked quite a bit. My husband had the lemon pepper shrimp, which he liked but thought it was too much food for an appetizer. He said the same thing about the sesame tuna entree and especially the baked potato which, at $10, was large enough to feed a family of four. The service was more than competent, although our waiter was not friendly or personable, almost to the point of seeming unhappy or bored with his job. Overall, the meal was very good, the service was very good, the portions were too large, the restaurant was noisy, and the prices were too high for what you get. Our bill for three people was about $300, which included 3 apps, 3 entrees, 2 side dishes, 1 dessert, 2 soft drinks and 2 waters.

The Best Selection of Fresh Fish and Meat in All of NYC

By Shitzky |

I passed up a Filet for fresh Salmon encrusted with horseradish. It was fantastic !!! The service was incredibly good in a great venue quite close to Grand Central Terminal. It is NOT inexpensive ! It's costly with dinner for four with cocktails priced at $425.00......but worth every penny. Try it !

The food and service have slipped

By John M |

I used to love Bobby Vans and would defend this steakhouse above all other NYC joints. Unfortunately it has slipped, considerably. Client dinners are no longer an option here. I often judge a restaurant and its management on how well they respond to a mistake (which happen every night at every restaurant and shouldn't be a big deal). Without bothering with the details, the manager, Phillip, embodied the disdain some of his staff have for their clients. There are a million other great steakhouses in NYC - its sad to see BV's drop like this.

Outstanding food, too notch service

Party of six of us. We had business to discuss and asked if they could open up their private room for us, they did so immediately without any fuss or extra charge (we paid $200 the night before at another restaurant for the privilege). Food was 5 stars, as was the attentive but low key service.

Old school steak house

We arrived before the rest of our party, and were seated in the bar. The bartender was pleasant and helpful.

Dined at this location in the Helmsley Building for an informal business dinner with a long-time vendor. We were both expecting wonderful steaks and great service . . . the entire experience (company excluded) was somewhat disappointing. 1. LOCATION: Not worthy of the title Steakhouse . . little personality and flare. The ambiance was clean 90's trending with a cramped galley-style bar. To their credit, they still offered coat check. . . but this pales in comparison to Wolfgang's or The Double Dutch. 2. STAFF: abrupt, matter-of-fact and pushy (for us to order) with few pleasantries . . Okay, I get it, it's New York, were just another table to them. . .But really, you're their to serve -- as in service -- and guide us through the menu and meal. 3. APPS/DRINK: The appetizers and mixed drinks were OUTSTANDING (truly the only thing saving the meal and the rating from a Goose Egg). For health conscious eaters, I'd recommend the Asparagus, as well as the Tuna Tartar - plentiful and delicious. 4. STEAK & SIDES: Our table ordered the Sirloin and Filet - medium rare. Exteriors were seared well, but lacked any notes of salt/brine or juicy flavor. In fact, my filet was actually a tough piece of meat -- not helped by the long, stringy tendon throughout. Wow, I'm still shocked. The brussel sprouts were under-cooked and not even the sprinkling of bacon and onions in the dish could salvage this side. Mashed Potatoes were okay -- but should never be a signature dish. In summary, a HUGE miss -- surely, it must have been an off night. Can't imagine the location staying in business if this is the norm. Go somewhere else with better ambiance - that way you'll at least be left with something, if the food stinks.

Great food

Food cooked when ordered and served with all trimming to keep you seated to enjoy the meal. Friendly staff and provided containers to take home left over food. Meal is large portions. Bathroom clean and spacious. Atmosphere is comfortable for eating and celebrating. Coat check is wonderful without problems. You get all your belongings that you checked in. Great location to public transportation and yellow cabs or private car service. You will not leave this restaurant disappointed and you will return.

Excellent

By Tom2002a |

Went here last Saturday night. I have been here many times for business meals and its always packed. Saturday was great... as apparently this is not on tourists radar. The place was half full which was very relaxing and quiet. Service and food quality were outstanding. The foods not cheap but if you want the best they have it. The Porterhouse for 2 was one of the best steaks I've had in 10 years - well done Bobby Van.

Delicious and Service was Phenomenal!!!

This is always one of our favorite restaurants to visit. Lots of fond memories and great dinners. We were waited on by the hilarious and wonderful Paul and Denny! To say that they wanted to make sure everyone had a wonderful experience is an understatement. I had the lump crab meat cocktail, which was to die for!! It was so sweet and delectable and is the envy of every town away from the City or a harbor that can't get crab meat like that. Knowing that it would be a while before I got more wonderful crab meat, I also had the Crab cakes for dinner, with a Cesar salad in between that I split with my Dad. The entire team at Bobby Van's always takes such good care of their customers and makes dinner a wonderful experience. There is a reason we go back, every time we are in the city!

Great steak , better appetizers

By Escape573607 |

This is the first place I had ever been too where the price of my appetizers was about the same price as my meal. Thankfully it was for business as the check was a bit insane but the food was fantastic , I highly recommend this place when you can spare it!

Soooo Many Better Options

By nhhaig |

Had an early dinner reservation, and arrived when the restaurant was basically empty. The 'hostess' did not offer to check our coats and marched us upstairs, and seated us at a table for two next to the kitchen (again, the restaurant was basically empty). The waiters were great, and moved us to another table for two. They were the highlight of the evening. The food was just ok - I would recommend Capital Grille, or American Cuts - same price, better food, and incredibly better front of the house -

Great Oysters among other things

By Joey S |

I sat at the bar, the bartender was great. The food was better! Oysters Rockefeller was simply amazing and then the burger top off the whole meal. I got hash browns instead of French fries, that’s the way to go!!! I highly recommend this place!!!

It was cool, but expected more

By BrooklynChef23 |

Went here for Restaurant Week and wanted to impress my date, however didn't quite work out quite as planned. Don't get me wrong, the food was great, the service was excellent but was expecting more from the ambiance. It was loud and bright, when we wanted more of a dim more romantic feel. Felt more like midday lunch on a Wednesday afternoon instead of a romantic dinner for two. But overall, food is good, drinks were ok and expensive. I think I may try the one on 50th St next time, they have lobster mac and cheese!

Great lunch!

By teena1014 |

We took a client here for lunch today. We had the seafood appetizer for the table and it was amazing! There were 7 of us and it had plenty of lobster tails, jumbo shrimp and lump crab with butter and dipping sauces. We almost all had filet mignon which was perfectly cooked and two others had the sword fish and salmon which were also good. The service was top notch and the food fabulous. I would go here again!

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, AND IT'S DELICIOUS

By JosephfromNYC |

This was my first trip back in a number of years since retirement. My wife ordered the pork chops (yes, you get two thick-cut chops) that most adults cannot eat at one sitting. The $39 price is very reasonable and they were delicious. Not at all tough and better than many other restaurants. We like pork chops and we order them most of the time when available, and we took one of the chops home. We also had the "off-menu" hamburger which was thick and delicious and served with a huge pile of skinny onion rings and thick french fries for $23. We also enjoyed espresso martinis which were large and strong. We were too full to even think about desserts. All in all, we decided to return more often and to bring friends. It is worth every penny.

The best steak house in NY

By Camiiila |

I've been in NY several times and was a kind of traditional going always to the same steak houses. One day trying to scape from a heavy rain, I found the best steak house of NY. Very classy, with the best service ever, the meat melts in your mouth. Perfectly cooked, good options of sides and fair price. Now I think to myself if I will ever get such another great surprise in the rainny days there. Hopefuly yes!

Great Steak In NY

we had lunch here we both had steak and both came out perfect, it was a bit pricey but well worth it considering how many places charge and not deliver, these guys do a great steak

Excellent Steakhouse

Great, traditional steakhouse. Wood paneling. Ala Carte, expensive menu and excellent food. A nice treat.

Best waiter!!

By Alejandra A |

This restaurant was nice. I enjoyed the waiter the most as he knew exactly what he was talking about. I'm from Texas so I've had better steak but the garlic mashed potatoes and hash brown casserole were delish!

First time, worth every penny!

By jhov208 |

I was in town traveling from the DC area celebrating my 5th anniversary. I normally go to Ruth Chris however u wanted to try something different. A friend recommended this restaurant and location so I tried it out. The service and food was great. The waiter even offered us a restaurant week menu which had more for your money, however we opted out for the regular menu. I'm glad we chose this restaurant as the food was very good, and the server gave excellent service. Will definitely return!

Great Bone-In Rib Eye and excellent wine list

By Jim |

My office is next door and this place is always consistent! Their bone in rib eye last night was ordered by all 4 at our table. Each steak was cooked to everyones preference and our guests from Australia loved it. We also ordered salads that were amazing and the size of each salad was a meal in itself. To top it off, the waiters and management sent us a complimentary cheese tray to enjoy with our wine at the end of the evening. Great food and amazing service! This is a true gem.

Delicious steak

By TamCat |

The portions here are HUGE so I wouldn’t have a starter as I regretted it due to the fact that I couldn’t finish my steak which was simply perfect. The meat was cooked blue to my exact liking and cutting through it was like cutting through butter, mouthwatering! If you like steak this is the place for you - yum!

AWESOME AS ALWAYS

Always a great steak, excellent wine list and service. Scrumptious desserts leaving you full and satisfied

Another great evening meal!

Back to the place we had our first NYC Steak 15 years ago. Still an excellent venue, top service great food at fair prices, nice comments / conversation with owner was real nice touch. Classy place with good options and nice dining experience.

Expensive - Better Choices in Manhattan

By jetlagNebraska |

We took clients there this week (their choice). Although the steaks appeared to be cooked as ordered, the appetizers were marginal at best. We ordered the seafood tower and the lobster was not even removed from the shell - it was tough as well - subpar even when comparing to chain steakhouses like Flemings. Deserts were overpriced as well - $30 for tartufo. Waiter was trying to talk us into even more appetizers - and we did not finish what was ordered for our table of 8. Better choices in NY - Sparks, Gallaghers, Smith & Wolensky, etc.

Simply amazing steaks...and drinks

By willb116 |

If you ever want a great steak, probably the best in all the US, then he'd to Bobby Vans. This is a NY staple. Right at Grand Central on Park Ave. enjoy their bar, if you're there after 3:00, introduce yourself to Johnny, he's a treat to talk with. The menu is great, from pasta to steak...enjoy!
