Bhodi Kosher in Manhattan's Chinatown is an excellent restaurant for vegans

By Michael A |

Bhodi Kosher in Manhattan's Chinatown is an excellent restaurant for vegans who are concerned that their food is not actually vegan.

Very good and very reasonable!

By indyzdanny |

Great Food, great service, great prices! Had lunch specials for $8.95….included large entree, soup, and egg roll….plus hot tea! All very good! Only issue I had was chopsticks only….no forks! But got by using my soup spoon.

Incredible Vegetarian Dining

By Reesie Anne |

I absolutely love this restaurant and its staff. The menu is extensive and so creative and everything is so well priced - from the incredible dim sum menu, to the lunch specials to the dinner menu. They currently have limited outdoor dining and continue to offer take out. Highly recommend for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.

Good Food

By SPJ |

The food was good. I did not like the bubble tea at all especially the tapioca pearls since they were too powdery hence one star less.

Amazing vegan authentic Chinese restaurant

By keekin |

The food here was amazing. You would never know it was not meat. We took friends who were skeptical and they love it. HUGE menu to choose from. We got orange chicken, mushroom noodles, meat buns, dumplings and rice. Servings are large. Everything was excellent. It was a wonderful experience. Would highly recommend it.

the worst service

By ohnbar |

Food is average and not worth the money. Delivery is very bad - 1.5 hours late and after reserving 10 hours ahead and paying for the delivery + tip for the delivery man - they wanted more money for the delivery in Manhattan!

Delicious for a Vegan Joint!

By KiraSupernova |

I was properly and quickly greeted when I arrived. Service was very attentive and the staff knowledgeable. I am not a vegan but had heard their food was very good even for vegan fair which I often do not like. I went with a vegetarian friend who raved about the place. My food came promptly and extremely hot! It was delicious and flavorful and I was surprised there was no meat in it. I could hardly tell! We had appetizers and a full meal each and we could barely finish what we ordered! It is a good deal for the price and you will leave with leftovers. These were even delicious the day after which is rare for a lot of take home meals. It seemed a little pricey but when we saw the size of the dishes we were impressed. You may pay more than you anticipate but you certainly get your money worth in terms of flavor and size and satisfaction.

Great flavor at wonderful price!

By Babybike2001 |

My wife and I took advantage of our visit to China Town and visited the restaurant. The service was very pleasant and the menu is very varied. We ordered from the lunch specials menu, my wife ordered sesame chicken with white rice and wonton soup, for drinks she ordered diet coke. I ordered Lamb with vegetables and garlic, served with white rice and wonton soup and a lemonade. The food was very delicious and we only spent $39.00. I recommend you visit this place!

A great find in the world of Vegan food!

By Connie1839 |

Let me start off by saying I personally did not eat here. I was with my grandson who is vegan and was excited about eating here and he was not disappointed. He ordered the General Tso's Veg Chicken and said it was excellent. The serving was large and the price was reasonable. He was happy so Grandma gives it five stars!

Vegan asian food

By lihuavitov |

Big family with different opinions, but all happy with the food. Nice portions, large variety. The parsley dumplings are a must.

Fantastic vegetarian dim sum

By renner_27john |

Best vegetarian dim sum I've ever had. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Highlights from the menu were the pee shoot dumplings and fried taro dumplings, but we enjoyed everything.

Already one of my favorites

By novel_screenname |

I can't say enough nice things about this restaurant. We just came back from a great meal: appetizer platter with six different kinds of dumplings, Szechuan pepper pot, tofu fried rice, and tofu with cedar sauce. Service was friendly and efficient; a pot of complementary hot tea greeted us when we sat down, and our server gave helpful recommendations when asked. The price was quite reasonable (around $50 before tip for the platter + two entrees and fried rice) and portion sizes were huge. We ate until we were stuffed and brought quite a bit of food home. We will definitely be returning.

Vegan at its best

By Rosihan Juara |

Vegan Asian style. Wonderful dim sum and Chinese dishes. Try the Tom yam noodle; excellent. Btw, Chinese tea is served instantly you are seated. Ask for ice if you would like it cold.

Interesting Vegan Food

By snowshoe1 |

It’s my spouse who is the vegan. I just go along for the ride. I ordered a Buddhist Delight . How can you go wrong with that? It was great. My spouse ordered something fried that looked like large chunks of uncured glue...purportedly a tofu dish. She did not care for it. I tasted it and well...I’ll give her credit..she ate some of it....and then polished off my Buddhist Delight. So I give the place four stars and suggest...read the menu carefully and don’t order something that may just be a UFO ( Unidentified Fried Object)

Top Vegan

We had a great lunch there. Excellent food and very tasty. The whole family was excited. The best lunch we had in town during our holiday very friendly staff. We all recommend it. See you next time.

CELIAC DINERS BEWARE

By Alli M |

CELIAC DINERS BEWARE! Let me start off by saying I want to love this place...in fact I did, until they served food that was labelled "gluten free", but was in fact filled with gluten. I have been here numerous times with my partner who has a severe gluten allergy, Celiac Disease. Each time we come we ask for the gluten free menu, order only the items labelled "gluten free" and specify to the waiter that my partner has a gluten allergy and all food must be gluten free including the soy sauce. We never thought twice about the food we were served until this last visit when after finishing a dish labelled "gluten free" we confirmed with the waiter that the soy sauce they were bringing out with a second course was also gluten free and they responded "no". At this time we asked to confirm the previous dish we had already eaten was gluten free and they responded "no". We were very upset, explained there was an allergy, asked why it was labelled gluten free if it is in fact NOT gluten free and they stated, "well the dish is but the sauce it is in is not". This makes absolutely no sense considering the sauce is NOT served on the side but is instead cooked into the dish making the dish subsequently NOT GLUTEN FREE! We were outraged, explained the consequences to which they seemed confused stating "the waitress didn't understand". We noted you must remove this item from the gluten free menu or you'll make other people sick but they maintained "It is gluten free just not the sauce". Clearly they are not trained or equipped to serve people with allergies and special dietary restrictions. We are extremely saddened that we can no longer trust one of the few places in NYC that claims to cater to those looking for gluten free dim sum. THOSE WITH A GLUTEN ALLERGY DO NOT COME HERE! THEY ARE NOT TRAINED TO GIVE ALLERGEN FREE FOOD!

Address to remember!

By Theo A |

While walking we came across the front of this restaurant and went in for lunch, it had the letter A on the windows and other recommendation labels which gave us confidence, we do not regret it, very good lunch, very good value for money and charming staff

Amazing food

By O1ivia_2 |

The best Chinese food I have ever had!! The soup dumplings were amazing and everything we ordered had so much flavour. I have never been to a completely vegan Chinese before so as a vegetarian this was great!

VERY NICE CHINESE STYLE VEGETARIAN FOOD

By liwenyoung |

I ordered Chinese dim sum. They are very delicious. I will try some other food next time. PS: The boss is very nice, offered a free drink.

Fabulous

By Marlene P |

My husband and I had just gotten into New York. We wanted Chinese and we're staying at 50 Bowery Hotel. We decided to try Buddha Bodai. We were so surprised because it was all vegan. I got the win ton soup and sesame chicken and it was fabulous. I kept telling my husband that I could not believe it was vegan! Sooo good!

excellent

By Tedo |

Great for vegetarians

Friendly staff, clean place and great variety of vegan and plant-based foods. All the dishes we tasted were delicious, I was amazed!

Vegan Chinese Food

By deegodeego |

My kids and I love this spot. We enjoy the bbq “meat” and the “fish” dinner. The staff is very friendly.

Vegan dim sum!

By Axlmaggie |

Huge vegan dim sum menu, with vegan versions of popular Asian dishes. Asian food loving vegans definitely must try this place.

Homey Tastey Vegan Dim Sum in a casual restaurant

By nobuko_e |

There were no ladies pushing a cart with steamers going around the tables in this restaurant, instead you are given a menu list which you check on the items you would like to order. You lack the excitement of looking at the food with no idea what they are but enticed by the look and pick up too many of them, but will be left with descriptions of items and not much ideas what they will look. I used my knowledge and educated guess, and ordered a good variety of dim sum, and everyone at my table was very happy.

Unique special vegan dishes

By Alpaca35 |

Only purchased the sweet and sour vegan fish through Uber eats. Took longer than expected but was excellent. Looked like deep fried dried tofu skin made into the shape of a fish.

Triple Threat, Triple Treat

By David L |

It's Kosher. It's Vegan. It's Chinese cuisine. A "triple threat" restaurant that delivers all three. We started with the pumpkin & mushroom soup -- it was magnificent. The soybean skin with vegetables, the steamed vegetarian fish balls, the stuffed fuzzy melon, and the lily root were excellent. So great to be able to eat healthy and not sacrifice taste, texture and presentation. There is a similarly named restaurant on Mott St. This one shows evidence of great cooks, polite wait staff and cleanliness (even the restrooms in the basement). The staff was even respectful in explaining to some customers walking in and asking for beef brisket won ton noodle soup, obviously unaware this is a vegan restaurant, despite the signage. The prices are modest. The most expensive main courses top at $19. Most are in the $9 to 13 range. I have photos to post but will have to wait for TipAdvisor to add this restaurant to its database.

DELICIOUS

By mwood333 |

Wow, we were not sure of my Vegan daughters suggestion on this (some have not been winners, ha) This was simply amazing. 3 non Vegans we all LOVED all the food. They give you tea when you sit down, which was delicious. We had the GF Dumplings, (gluten free) AMAZING. Then we got a few dishes that were all fantastic.

Excellent

By Stéphanie M |

A super good restaurant. The Dims are varied, excellent. The steamed Bao is great but the fried one is even better. The servers are very friendly.

Tasty and sooo it's so good !

By F00D345 |

Located on a secondary street off the main street of China Town, the signage makes it easy to see. The service was good and the server was friendly. He graciously answered any questions about the entrees. His explanations helped narrow down the many intriguing and potentially scrumptious choices. Ultimately, deciding to share Vegetarian Lamb Stew and Braised Bean Curd Skin. Both were delicious. Our taste buds wanted more, but our stomachs were more than full. A great choice for vegan, vegetarian or adventuresome locals or visitors.

Delicious Chinese Vegetarian Fare

By Terry L |

What a wonderful surprise! Bodhi is flavorful. The absence of meat doesn’t matter to this carnivore when the taste is so good.

One of my favorite restaurants!

By NYCJuly |

If I were not afraid to gain 50 pounds, I would eat here every day. This is not vegan food you settle for, it’s vegan food that you want to eat. Their lunch specials are a steal. For about eight dollars you get a big portion and soup or spring roll. Bonus, if you eat in you get roasted peanuts! Service is great and I often hear the regulars call the staff by their names. I really like this place and so will you.

Delicious vegetarian food

By Annarbor Wei |

We had a family vacation in NYC and stopped by this restaurant for lunch. It’s very clean and decorated with Buddhist themed pictures. Foods were beautifully presented with delicious flavors. Even the picky eaters in our group enjoyed the food. We will be back!

Don't you dare make a mistake. The place is not Jewishly kosher!

By Journey58571785902 |

The food is delicious, but full of oil. They require you to pay a tip. They literally stand by your side and indicate the tip so that you take money out of your wallet and pay. Not pleasant at all. In addition, they sell there shrimps, meat, etc. (for those who keep kosher). This means that there is no connection between the name of the place and Jewish kosher.

I will crave this for 100 years!!!!

By Suzanne B |

In the middle of china town, The place is so good!! We ordered the vegan pork buns, the vegan General Tso’s Chicken and the Vegan Bento Box. Everything is vegan, I kept asking though, just to make sure, LOL! We had a California roll and the “crab” had the texture of real crab! The chicken was so much like chicken, even the aftertaste! The pork buns!!! I could have eaten 20 of them! We were so stuffed when we left we didn’t eat until the next morning! I love this restaurant, sadly we are not from NYC and will have to wait to eat it until the next time we are in NYC. Unless I can get someone to go over there and get me food and mail it to me. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!

Solidly Delicious

By CorpSpy |

We ordered take-out from Buddha Bodai because my wife and I both keep kosher and she also is a vegetarian. Well, this was a successful selected by all accounts! The food was delicious, plentiful, and fresh. I try to balance my reviews with what is good along with things that could be done better. In this case, I was very pleased with everything. Good job Bodhi Bodai.

Good inexpensive vegetarian restaurant

By rtaba285 |

We had a very nice lunch here. With lunch specials, we had soup (or one can get a spring roll). a main course, rice, and tea for under $10 a person including tax and tip. Good quick service even though they were fairly crowded.

good dim sum

By ysaschar m |

This is the second time in the restaurant Very good service and the impotent thing is the food. We eat dim sum and it was excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant

Delicious kosher vegan

By cwbyesq |

Located in Chinatown, one block from Little Italy, you will find a quality kosher vegan restaurant. The owner surprised me with his Hebrew. The food was tasty, plentiful and reasonably priced.

Wonderful Vegan Place

By Marjorie F |

What a fantastic place! When I first bit into their Dim Sum I thought I was taking a little bite out of a cloud! They were soo delicious! I highly recommend them!

Best Chinese food ever!

By Rebecca C |

Visited twice during one week, the food was that good. We had fried BBQ mock meat, panfried dumplings, General Tso's, and noodles. Every single thing was delicious and the portions were very generous. Pricing is very reasonable for the food quality.

Perfect

By Stefan F |

Went there due to a recommendation of our friends. Very deliciously food for vegans and vegetarians. The rice in bamboo leaves are amazing!

Vegan happiness

By cwbyesq |

One of my favorite restaurants. The staff is friendly and helpful. The menu is diverse and the portions plentiful. This is a perfect place to take your friends and family who are not yet vegetarians. They will be surprised and delighted!

An Absolute Must for Vegans

By Reuben P |

We were strolling in China Town and saw a Vegan Store and decided to walk-in to ask where we could get good vegan food. The store proprietor pointed us in the right direction and we went to Bodhi Kosher Vegetarian/Vegan Restaurant. I will simply describe the food there as AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS. We ordered from the lunch menu and the portions were HUGE. Service was quick, friendly and attentive. This restaurant is a must visit if you are a vegan. We will definitely return on our next visit to New York.

Most Delicious and Surprising Buddha Bodai

By meganshead |

This restaurant was recommended to me and so I really wanted to make sure I got to it during my stay in NYC. And I am so, so glad I did. The cute lotus painting bedecked venue was filled with locals, both Chinese and Jewish; it is a vegan, kosher, Chinese restaurant after all. The menu is overwhelmingly extensive and I needed help to choose. There were four of us and we started with the steamed dumpling platter; a selection of the most delicate and delicious dumplings. Then I had General Tso's veg chicken; crispy veg chickeny nuggets and fresh broccoli in a sticky, spicy sauce. I tasted everything else on the table and it was so, so good. I loved it. Buddha Bodai is a must visit for vegans and non-vegans too.

Very Good Vegetarian Food

By lfiebert |

A small group of old friends got together today for a midweek lunch at Bodhi Kosher Vegan Restaurant. We enjoyed our meal and found the restaurant to be simple and very pleasant. They have a very nice inexpensive lunch menu that included various soups, a choice of many main dishes, and white or brown rice. If you are seeking a very good Kosher vegetarian Chinese meal you will be very pleased at the Bodhi Kosher Vegetarian Restaurant.

Vegetarian Kosher Dim Sum - Great find!

By stevelotte |

We had wonderful steam buns and dim sum. Definitely recommend for vegetarians and their friends. Our grandson loved the steam buns and never thought twice about them not having animal protein. Place was busy at lunch time like all the Chinatown restaurants but they got our food out hot and as fast as they could.

Great spot for Dim Sum: and it's veg!!

By Joey D |

You can get decent Chinese food in almost any city in the US. You can't get decent Dim Sum and you especially can't get Veg Dim Sum just anywhere. So, don't order anything else: grab their DS menu, and just check off everything... OK, maybe not everything but the next time I go, that's what I'm doing! The buns were moist but not soggy, the veggies were sautéed to perfection, and the pan fried dumplings were that mouthful of crunchy, smooth goodness you want from a pan-fried anything. Shared three plates and a pot of tea with my wife: the good life in Chinatown. Stoked: So refreshing to just order straight off a menu: no subs, no picking through a million fried meats. Just good vegetables in dough. Ahhhh... Oh, and the service was good too. Bummed: Not much to be bummed about here. The place was on point! Tip: It's not the original Buddha Bodai! Make sure it says "Kosher Vegan"

Pleasent, busy and nice

By ManuelLucero |

enthusisastic adn somewhat disorganized servers, but nice. Good food that happens to be vegan and kosher.

The better Buddha Bodai

By Karolina L |

There are two Buddha Bodai in NY, but this is the one you'd want to visit. I love this place. The waiters are always nice and the food is the best Veg. Chinese I've had. My favorite has to be Lamb and BBQ ribs. I never even had lamb in my life so I can't say it tastes like lamb but the flavor and texture is amazing. My fiance usually just stuffs his face with a plate of ribs and claims they're better than the real thing. The only thing I ever ordered that I really didn't like was their wonton soup. It tastes like water and the wontons are also not very good but I'm a regular costumer and so far this is the only thing I stay away from.

Nausea after eating

By Artemis J |

The food smelled weird but I ate it anyway, I got nausea thereafter and my friend too. Maybe this inconvenience does not present itself every time but I think people who decide to eat here should know this is a possibility

To Go!

By misopiso88 |

After a long work day, I stopped at Bodhi Kosher for some vegetarian fried rice to go. Friendly folks and fast service.

Great find!!

By pebbles1222 |

Vegan. Kosher. Chinese. Great food and service. Just a little hole in the wall in Chinatown, but a must for any vegetarian, vegan, or anyone

Absolute gem!

By Bheeks |

We stumbled upon this restaurant while walking around Chinatown and were not disappointed! Every item on the menu is vegan and made with a protein substitute, so we were able to order food with confidence that would normally contain beef or pork at any other Chinese restaurant (which we don't eat). The food was incredibly tasty and service was quick and with a smile. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Generous portions of tasty food

By kxjan |

We very much enjoyed the food. It is very tasty. There is an extensive menu. All is vegan. As a vegetarian it may be best to try to ignore the off-putting meaty names of the dishes. It would be much nicer if the menu said seitan (and variants thereof) instead of the names of various animals. If one can get over that glitch, the menu has lots of interesting things to try. We had three dishes between two of us. All delicious. This was an enormous amount of food. Instead of boxing it, I stuffed myself, it was just too tasty to stop, though I feared I'd feel bloated afterwards. Much to the credit of the chef and quality of the ingredients, the food digested very easily and cleanly, no heaviness, no oiliness. The staff were friendly, helpful (we watched them patiently help another vegetarian customer who looked rather stunned by the menu), and we were greeted with a warm welcome and large pot of tea. The restaurant is comfortable, quiet. The food arrives quickly. Prices are reasonable.

Amazing vegan food!

By hereandthere2012 |

We went here for lunch one day and stuffed ourselves with Dim Sum. Dishes were great. Good service and really varied menu. We just had the dim sum and a few mock meat dishes.

Good food at a good price

By Dominik K |

Good food at a good price. Lots of vegetarian options, portions are large. We were there twice and were satisfied twice - during lunch (great prices) and in the evening (more traffic, but we didn't have to wait very long). It's worth it

Excellent place

By Guido C |

I came back here after a year and a half and it only got better. The food is excellent, the service is very good and the prices are very very affordable. When you're vegetarian, you never know for sure what's on your plate in Chinatown. This place is the solution. There are alternatives, but this is without doubt the best. And you eat for less than 10 dollars...

Lots of choices

By FloridaFamilyofFive |

We stopped here for vegetarian lunch. The menu was large and varied. Unfortunately it is impossible to tell what some of the items are or how large the portion is going to be. Fortunately it is very cheap. The service was weak overall but it was a very good meal.

Unreal vegan food!

By Alana C |

Wow-- let me just start by saying I've only gotten delivery from this place. Out of the 10 times I've ordered, 1 time was really late to the point that I thought they forgot about me. Nevertheless I continue to order from here because it is just that good. The BBQ meat still makes me second-guess if it's really vegan. Highly recommend trying a variety of menu items because none have disappointed yet.

Nicest Chinese Vegan

By Sanjay M |

This visit was amazing. The food was well done and fresh, and the quality was excellent. The service was fast and the staff is very friendly.

Delicious and low key vegan restaurant

By CanuckV |

Friendly service and amazing food made this a highlight of a recent NYC trip that featured many vegan meals. They were able to accommodate a large group with short notice and provided a great family style meal for a good price. It's such a great experience to be able to try vegan takes on classic Chinese dishes. Dishes not to be missed: - lemon "chicken" - shredded shitake with broccoli - "chicken" chow fun

Amazing vegetarian dim sum

By AMFM M |

Missed so much dim sum where I would never enjoyed back home since I turned I ti vegetarian. This restaurant provided all my favourite dim sum in vegetarian or vegan options! Such a blessing to dine there. Waitresses are friendly and helpful. Interiors are calming with Buddhist pictures. Would love to return again

Nothing special. The food is so so.

By TangoNY |

The food was blend and not pleasant. In my opinion. We were disappointed in the taste and the whole ambiance is runs of the mill local Chinese restaurant. We won’t be back.

Vegan 🌱

By Candy Kim |

Vegetarian is a healthy choice 🌱 And Dim Sum was right here 🥟 Variety choice is the best option for both sides during orders. Taste is subjective and the price reasonable 👍

Tasteless or Greasy

By soriguana |

Won ton soup- broth tasted like water, won tons had no taste. Both the tso chicken and bbq meat were greasy. The buns were tasteless. The accompanying vegetables were good. 2 stars for good service and for being vegetarian.

Kosher Vegetarian Vegan

By Rosihan Juara |

It was indeed refreshing to find a vegetarian dim sum place. The place is not crowded and the service is fast and friendly. Almost immediately upon seating down we were served with a pot of hot pu'er tea. The menu followed suit right after. The food came reasonably fast and the taste is exceptional. The lunch special comes with either spring roll, dumpling soup or hot and sour soup. You can ask for chilli oil if you want a bit more hotness with your meal. They have a toilet in the premises which is reasonably clean.e tried four dishes and all were to our satisfaction. The dishes were: Pan-fried Turnip cake, BBQ Veg meat friend rice, stir friend Pak Choy and veg shrimp rice roll.

Best Chinese Buddhist Vegan food in NYC

By Lou |

Have been going for a long time..simply the best well trusted clean food in NY that best compares to delicious vegan food in Taiwan. Wonderful. Have been going with family, friends, and fellow spiritual devotees.

Best vegan and vegetarian asian food ever

By Hevcat |

WOW! So pleased we went over to Chinatown to sample the cuisine here. There was so much to choose from the menu we had to get the server to help us decide. We ended up having fake meat steam buns, vegan ribs and rice and some panfried gyoza. All of which were so so tasty. Wish we came here more than once on our trip, the staff were very welcoming and it was really cheap compared to a lot of restaurants in the city. If only we lived in the city and could order this for our Friday night takeaway! Would recommend for those who aren't vegan, my boyfriend thought the vegan ribs were incredible and is still talking about them and he isn't vegan!

Long live discovery! Amazing vegan cuisine

By Stephan B |

We are new to vegan cuisine and were amazed by the quality of the dishes served and their originality. We who are not vegetarians loved the taste and textures. The waiter also gave us very good advice.

Best Vegan Dim Sum Ever

By Carla S |

I have never had pork barbecue buns, so I am no expert on the originals. But the ones that are purported to be the vegetarian stand-in are the best buns I have ever had. The turnip cakes are delicious, and the pumpkin mushroom soup was a lovely surprise. Not too salty, no MSG. A delicious vegan treat!

You are in Cinatown and you are Vegan...eat here

By Heather D |

I have been living in NYC since 1990 and I remember when there was a kosher vegetarian Chinese restaurant on Columbus Circle. It was a great place to take omni friends and family. It's been gone a long time but the food at Bodhi kind of reminded me of it. My daughter and I (vegan) ate here with my husband and neice (omni) and it was so special to be able to share plates amongst the 4 of us. The food was fresh and tasty and it is a typical Chinatown dim sum place...except everything is vegan and A LOT of options are GF. It's not too expensive, either. After lunch my daughter commented that she could bring her friends there for dim sum when they are having a day out. If you are wandering around Chinatown and you are vegan fill up on the generous helpings at Bodhi.
