As I sit and reminisce about my meal last night at Bohemia, I find myself nearly drooling. Secretive spot in an inconspicuous location that was one of the best culinary experiences of my life--the full package. This restaurant far exceeded it's mysterious, cultish hype as everything from the drinks to the veggie appetizers to the sashimi to the fish and beef entrees were not only sublime, but totally inexpensive for the relative value of the food. I cannot say enough about the quality and unpretentious simplicity of the fish and meat dishes--cooked to perfection and more flavorful than even the most decadent of Fois Gras (and without the artery clogging). Wow!

The kind of restaurant you might find back in a Japanese city, Bohemian offers top service and a cute space. Interesting menu with very good but not great food.

Non-pretentious vibe, great food. Unique, relaxed experience surrounded by beautiful interiors. Great service and food display.

Loved the idea of going to an "invite only" restaurant, fun "secret" access. Decor is nice, a bit run down. Tables are low, seating is not very comfortable. I would not recommend to anyone with back issues - maybe there are more comfortable tables that could be requested. I am pescatarian, wanted to try the tasting menu with my friend, there is one course I could not have. They did accommodate but it was by doubling up on the sashimi course. Delicious, but i would have thought there would have been something more creative available, I am probably not the first person to ask for a "no meat" option. The starting crudites were excellent - the rest of the courses were very good, but not the best I have had. Dessert was a bit disappointing. Enjoyed a cucumber cocktail. Our server was good, I would have liked a slightly slower pace, I was surprised that one course came while we were still finishing the prior. Prices were not bad for NYC and the quality of the menu. Definitely worth the visit - if you can get in!

I've been wanting to go here for some time. Once we were finally able to go, we had an amazing time. The food was excellent and unique, the drinks were delicious, and the service was impeccable. For the value, it's my favorite restaurant in NYC.

I read about this place on the internet and managed to their phone number through the concierge of our hotel. My husband and I both got the tasting course. As for drinks, I ordered the Type C and my husband ordered a bottle of Dassai to share. The yuzu infused cocktail that I got was really really yummy. Everything that we tried that night was good but the highlight were definitely the uni croquette and the pan roasted branzino for the fish lovers. For $55 per person, we got 5 courses plus dessert. It was an incredible amount of food. We can't wait to come back and try more!

Apparently one needs to be referred before you may book at this delightful Japanese restaurant. We were privileged to be invited along with friends and enjoyed the night thoroughly.Sitting at low tables in a relatively small but attractively decorated space, one may order a few of the dishes and share. The food is prepared freshly and is outstanding. All in all a very worthwhile experience.

The food here is spectacular and only topped by the amazing staff. An experience you want to have - book ahead it is a small place and not easy to get a reservation - keep trying however as it's well worth it!

Let's set the scene :- There is a Japanese Restaurant in New York with no sign outside , no phone number , no facility for reservations and no desire to join the rat race of the other 11,000 or so eateries in NY. So , Bohemian is a 'secret' NY restaurant. Why ? Because it wants to do it's own thing with it's own type of people. This in no way makes it pretentious , but does make it difficult to get in and also adds to the experience for those fortunate few who do. It just is what it is. I stumbled across the name while researching for a holiday to celebrate my 20th Wedding Anniversary. Then came the challenge ! How can I get in ? Well , you can get in. By referral , by luck or by hard graft ! If you get a phone number for Bohemian , randomly , i wouldn't bother calling as you are likely to get nowhere. Some try calling in person and a select few may be lucky. I chose the hard graft route. (get googling) Needed a reservation while I was in NY !!! Bohemian want to welcome people to their special place , and in order for it to remain special it has to have that little bit of 'Je ne sais quoi' The entrance is absolutely fantastic. Some images are available on line. If you don't fancy Bohemian at this point then go no further , go and book somewhere else. We visited during the day and at night and it is fabulous. The building used to belong to Andy Warhol , which just adds to the uniqueness of the place. When visiting Bohemian , it is a bit of an experience at the door. A great one in my opinion, if your names not on the list your not getting in ! Not even for a look ! Anyway..........we are now IN ! a very small intimate room that has seating for 22 diners. We opted for the tatsing menu after ordering 2 outstanding cocktails. Please Please try the Thin Cucumber . The tasting menu lets you sample the fantastic food on offer at Bohemian. The other pleasing thing about Bohemian is that they don't take the rip when it comes to cost. As it is rather exclusive they could rip you off , but that's not the Bohemian way. It is most definately great value. The fish dish , Branzino , (Seabass) was to die for as was the sashimi beef. The service is very respectful as you would expect from a Japanese Restaurant. During our stay in New York we were very fortunate to dine at Jean George , Juni , Le Bernardin , Asiate and I can honestly sat that the whole dining experience at Bohemian stood shoulder to shoulder with our other experiences. Now I am in :-) I will visit Bohemian when I return to New York. Thank you Bohemian for a fantastic time and an experience that money can't buy. Good luck to you all in your quest to eat at Bohemain. I hope you succeed and experience a wonderful little secret in a big loud wonderful city.

A bit hard to find but worth the effort. Asian/Japanese cuisine with some emphasis on Kobe beef. The very knowledgeable server explained all dishes very patiently to a crowd of 6 (some of them picky eaters) and made selection easy. The food is excellent with great flavors and presentation making it a perfect evening. Good value. We are looking forward to our next visit.

We'd read about this place before leaving for our holiday to NY and managed to get a reservation for Monday night. If you know anything about it, you'll know it's hidden behind some graffiti ridden metal shutters - you'd have absolutely no idea there was a top end restaurant behind it. Inside was small - I think it sits about 24 people but it was beautifully designed and had a great bar. The waiter we had wasn't very clear when it came to explaining the menu - we wanted to order 1 main course each instead of having the tasting menu, but he seemed very confused by this and didn't know what we should order instead. So we ended up with one big dish for myself and a small dish of raw fish for my partner which wasn't enough. Unfortunately we had to be out the door an hour and 45mins after we arrived due to a show we were going to, and when ordering my main (pork with cacao nibs), I was told it would take an hour to be served. After explaining our situation, the waiter said the chef could do it in 30mins but it actually came out 45mins later. Apart from the confusion with the not so great waiter, the food was delicious and so nicely presented. The drinks were very nice (try the cocktails!) and it was something special to be in one of Manahttans best secret restaurants. Would definitely go back to Bohemian (but would hope for a different waiter!)

This could be one of the best restaurants in Manhattan. This place is hard to get in to make a reservation. It's a highly exclusive place. My friend knew someone that knew the owner so we got a reservation. This place is probably one of the most highly acclaimed restaurants in NY city right now. They have one of the most delicious steaks I have ever eaten. And they are known to be one of the best steak places in NY city right now. You may have to know someone to get a reservation, as someone said it may be invite only for now. The place is small and it's like sitting in someone's personal home. The ambiance is lovely and so cozy. I think this is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. It's like going to someone's personal home. You ring a doorbell and wait for someone to open the door and greet you. You are let in by a friendly, warm staff. And then sat at your table. You feel very special and high society here. The food is extraordinary. That have organic meats, like chicken, which my friend ordered, and said it was like magic and wondered why her home cooked chicken never tasted so good and crisp. You have to try the Short rib sashimi. My friend ordered this and I had a piece. I never had this before and it was out of this world. The seasoning was succulent and fantastically delicious. My other friend ordered the Cod fish and said it was also extremely delicious. For desert we shared the tiramisu, very good too. All in all, this night was fantastic. We would like to return, if we can get a reservation.

Lovely atmosphere. Like a private home with a fabulous chef and great service. Not to be missed. The Pan Roasted Branzini is sublime. The tasting menu is well worth it.

Its nice to be part of the crowd and its the only way into this restaurant. Even once you are in you have the sense of being in a secret restaurant as everyone that is there has that bit of New York class. The food is wonderful and fresh and the place is buzzing, giving it a great atmosphere. Will definitely be back when I am next in New York.

I went to Bohemian as a guest. When I was told that there was no name on the outside, had no listed phone number and to I obtain a reservation one must be referred I w. as put off right away. This is just so much foolishness. With just have half the tables occupied, one might think they would rethink this pretentiousness. As for the food, it wasn't bad, but it was certainly no hidden treasure that one found with difficulty

Trendy Speak Easy Japanese Chill House witha large imagination for the story behind. People say it was one of the Factory Houses of Andy Warhol's soul mate Basquiat. I think it is just a great story to increase the tention & hunger to be part of it. Via Japan & via Pan European phone calls we succeeded to snatch 2 of the 24 cosy seats at Bohemian's. The setting was relaxing, minimalistic & intimate for NYC standards. The menu was a mix of Japanese & classic but most of the people take the Tasting Course. A products were very fresh & everything was served with attention for details. Great, surprising cocktails! If you book late during the weekend, you get a special musical treat for free.

We had the tasting menu. Service was great but the waiter spilt a drink on my friend and I. He very kindly offered to reimburse us if the top was spoilt which was very kind but to our surprise he charged us for the replacement drink later. The food is excellent, extremely fresh ingredients, delicious and perfectly balanced. The seats are a little uncomfortable though. The room is beautiful. Tasting menu is $65 and very good value

Had 3 nice dinners during my stay in NYC and the other 2 where on fancy Micheline-restaurants, but Bohemian really topped the other to because of the secrecy of the booking and entering of the venue and the friendlyness of the staff. Amazing drinks and syphatic pricing of the menu with inovative courses and lots of humor in the presentation of the food. i understand that it is difficult to get a reservation here, but once you do I guarantee that it is worth it.

We were fascinated by the selection process and teased by the whole "secrecy" thing. Then the experience came. We were sitting at the bench (no table available) and at the end it turned out to be fabulous. We could watch the elegant bar-lady preparing cocktails under our eyes while enjoying the fixed menu (which I recommend) sipping ourselves a few of the very original cocktails. The food was really exceptional in the sense of offering a unique experience without being too extravagant. Taste and substance, service and originality all balanced up into an experience thet ended up being the best dinner during our 10 days stay in NY. We will definitely return every time we go back to the city.

It was simply a food orgasm. We had the vegetable fondue and the dipping cheese sauce was out of this world. Mac and cheese .. the best I ever had. And the steak was tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. Again food orgasm !!!! U have to know someone who knows someone who's already been there to get a reservation but the hassle is worth it.

A colleague of mine took to Bohemian and it was totally not what I had expected. The dishes were very unique being fusion Japanese. Yet I've never had any of the dishes quite like it before. It is so secretive you have to know someone to go there and you need to ring the door bell to get in. Once inside it almost feels like someone's living room. You sit in a sofa or a lounge chair eating off of a coffee table. I had the tasting menu and it was worth every penny and it wasn't expensive at all, although we spent more on alcohol than on food.

celebrated our anniversary, we went for the tasting menu, it was simply remarkable from start to finish, the staff was great!!!

After going through hoops to get into the Bohemian, we took our two NYC guests. We were all excited. The staff were good, the low armchairs not made for eating comfort nor conversation. The food was just above ordinary - and expensive. The best dish was without doubt the mini hamburgers. Skip the beef sashimi - tough, fat, and tiny. The Miso Cod was good, but not up to Nobu nor, dare I say, my own. The Croquettes were very good. I would not return. One of our group ended up with seriously upset stomach possibly from the steak tartare.

My husband and I were so looking forward to dinner here after reading the fabulous reviews. Great small venue with a cool/funky decor. Oversold the "hidden door" aspect of the entrance. Spotty/unfriendly service - in no way resembled Japanese service. Told them about gluten/dairy dietary restrictions and were served dishes with dairy. They removed the dish from the bill, but still, really? Way too complicated process to actually get the reservation and not worth the time expended. The effort most likely accounts for the higher than expected reviews. Drinks were ok, nothing special. Wouldn't recommend it or return.

You have to find the place and get a reservation before you can enjoy it, but if you have the opportunity you will not be disappointed. Get the steak :-)

What’s this? A secret restaurant in NYC? One, that you can only dine at either by knowing someone who has dined there, or writing essentially an essay as to why you love food. Ladies and gents, I was able to secure their phone number for a reservation by writing to them. Was it worth it? Heck, yes it was. I’ve wanted to dine at Bohemian ever since I saw the video on Eater touting their short rib sashimi. By perusing their hundreds of restaurant reviews, I can say that I was intrigued. How can I visit NYC, without dining here? It was inevitable. I called their number and asked if I could make a reservation a month later for a party of 6. Done and done. Our reservation was at 6 pm. Our table was guaranteed from 6 pm to 8:30 pm, as the next seating was at 9 pm. Unfortunately, part of our party was stuck at the Tonight Show taping. I blame Jimmy Fallon. Two of my friends made it to the reservation and started ordering drinks. We had planned on doing the tasting menu ($80). They won’t let you the tasting menu unless the entire party has arrived. Partly because, the tasting menu is served family style so if your party isn’t present, it won’t work. We all made it well after the 6 pm seating and started ordering food and drinks. We made it in time and they were so gracious to let us keep our table. It doesn’t look like much outside and there’s even a doorbell you need to ring before making it inside. The hostess will greet you at the door. Once inside, the restaurant is tiny so seating is tight. I can see why they won’t just let you walk in. You have to call and check if they have availability. Once seated, I ordered a matcha and whiskey cocktail. Our server said that the drink was not sweet and strong. I assured him that I wanted just that. My other friends also ordered drinks. For the tasting menu, they brought out the following: Farmer’s Fresh Vegetable fondue: It came with plenty of root vegetables, radicchio, bell peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The cheese fondue was good with the crunchy veggies. Uni Croquette: A fried mushroom cream croquette with uni. It was a delicious bite. The uni was delicate and buttery. The texture of the fried croquette went well with the uni too. Washu-Beef Short Rib Sashimi: tender marbled strips of washu-beef served with soy-pickled garlic, daikon cubes, lemon and wasabi. This was so amazingly good. The beef was tender; the different accoutrements combined well with the flavors. I’d order this by itself next time. Pan Roasted whole Branzino with seasonal vegetables: I really loved this dish. The fish was crispy and served whole. The vegetables were beautifully roasted. Everything was delicious. Choice of Washu-beef mini burger or sashimi rice bowl: Most of us went with the mini burger and one person opted for the sashimi rice bowl. It was a pretty good burger and the fried potatoes were a nice side. They don’t serve the burger unless you order the tasting menu, but I suppose you could ask. Morgenstern’s vanilla ice cream with yuzu crunch: a perfect ending to a lovely meal. As you can see, the tasting menu is worth every penny. If you’re not looking to splurge, the a la carte menu is available as well. The food was prepared well and the service was exceptional. If you ever get a reservation, you’re in for a treat.

We had heard about this invitation only restaurant but didn't realize it is more than 7 years old already. Website gives instructions and while a little unusual, it is well worth it...from so many perspectives. Consider booking a few weeks in advance, and check back for cancellations? First finding this spot where Warhol and Basquiat spent time is not an easy feet (you'll see address in this posting). Two doors including a buzzer and you're in. Greeters and staff friendly and helpful. Thanks to Yu-san for His explanations. There were Two omakase (set) menu's but we were hoping for A La Carte so we could try more things. Basically 2/3 share plates per person and pricing very reasonable in the $17-26 range. Courses can be large so ask to be sure. Highlights were Bohemian Weekend cocktail, followed by Veggie Fondue, Mac & Cheese, and Mini (Ironic) burger which is hefty 1/4 pound of Wagyu. Matcha Molten Cake rich but tasty dessert. We hope to be back again soon, or try their Tokyo and other outlets. Good luck and enjoy!

This restaurant was excellent! We had a little trouble finding it because the place is so hidden which only added the the charm. Once we were inside the restaurant, it was very cozy. We got the beef tartare, Mac and cheese, ramen and a steak and rice dish and everything was top notch. We left feeling very full as well. My boyfriend and I both agreed that the drink with Japanese roasted tea infused tequila, house-made honey, lime and artichoke was the best drink we’ve ever had in our lives. Service was amazing!

I made a reservation almost 2 to 3 weeks in advance for my two year anniversary with my boyfriend, and i let them know i wanted this to be a special experience for us. On the day of, we got stuck in the most ridiculous traffic and took an hour longer to get there than usual. I called the restaurant and they said it was okay to come later but i had to give up our seats at 8:45pm. I was already upset but when we got there, the first thing the man tells us is that we had only an hour to dine (which was different than what the lady had told me over the phone). I told him otherwise and we were eventually seated. I asked if the tasting menu was still okay to order and they said it was fine. The whole time I caught all the employees looking over their shoulders at us. I felt so uncomfortable and embarrassed in front of my boyfriend. No one gave us attention or spoke with us, while they poured their attention on the couple right next to us. If ordering the tasting menu was a problem, i wish they had told me so i can order the a la cart. The food was mediocre at best. The most filling course was the fish which was bland. Best courses were the beef sashimi and dessert. The worst part was when no one said thank you or good bye to us, and my boyfriend and i just quietly walked out. Left a hearty tip but would reconsider going back.

Great I I and Bronzino. All in all a wonderful experience. Half the adventure is finding the phone number.

So the formerly secret restaurant that isn't so secret anymore behind the former butcher shop that doesn't exist anymore is still around. And as you would probably expect, the beef is good here. We almost opted for the tasting menu but so glad we didn't. The"fondue" looked more like a center piece from edible arrangements. That said, we went with the tuna poke, the washu tartare, the mac and cheese, and the rib eye steak. The meat dishes were absolutely on point. The mac and cheese was good but a bit too runny for my taste. If I come back, it'll definitely be just for the meat. Let me know if you want to go. I'll refer it.

This is by far the best restaurant in NYC. The chef is amazing, the beef is incredible it is a must try in NYC. Where every other restaurant is a large crowded hassle , this restaurant is an oasis of peace and tranquility while being extraordinarily fun

All the hassle of trying to get into this place was well worth it. Came with a friend and it was our first time so we opted to get the tasting course for $55 per person. Everything that came out was exceptionally good and I really liked the sea urchin and veggie fondue. Who knew veggie fondue could taste so good? The beef sashimi is the best sashimi I've ever had. The only problem I can see with this place is that tall people will have a hard time sitting in the low chairs and tables. I'm 5'3 and I was a little uncomfortable sitting in the chairs. If you get a chance to come here, this is one place where the food is worth the hype and secrecy.

Excellent dinner! Me and my girlfriend were looking to do a Michelin star restaurant for the weekend and were baffled by the prices. If you’re looking for a similar experience and a mixture of a speak easy vibe, this is the place for you. Beef Tar Tar was excellent. We also got this drink with Tequila and Tea, it was honestly the best drink I’ve ever had in the life. Sounds ridiculous but I’m not kidding, so good.

After reading about Bohemian being “THE GO TOO RESTAURANT “ in New York and having to submit a “resume” just to obtain their Number and calling New York from Australia (No online bookings)to get a reservation The HYPE Of being A SECRET EXCLUSIVE HIDDEN restaurant, maybe our expectations excitement and antisapation were set too high. On arrival we were ushered to a lounge area 4 sofa chairs and a low Coffee table thinking that maybe we would have to wait for our table /pre dinner drinks only to find out it WAS OUR TABLE !!! Try eating food leaning forward on the edge of a lounge chair (it’s not comfortable ) Tip : Ask for a proper table (wouldn’t think you would have to being(BOHEMIEN ) The next Disapointment of the evening and probably the deciding factor that it was not going to be a successful evening was.... THE WAITRESS - I’ve emphasised Waitress because I think she forgot that was her job!Leaning against the wall giving short answers to questions regarding the menu and sizes of portions, raised brow look of she was TOO GOOD to serve us, condescending tones, the attitude should have been left at home or maybe we should have walked out.!!! Now to the FOOD - TOLD by our lovely waitress food was to SHARE make of that what you wish, but it screams to me SMALL and that’s what it was ! Our first dish to arrive was pickled cauliflower 4 small heads pickled way too much (takes your breath away ) then Washu beef short rib sashimi THE SMALLEST I’ve ever seen. Then the Cauliflower with Parmesan which was edible but forgettable. The highlight for food was the Lamb Chop. Then we were shown a small board with steak and prices (VERY EXPENSIVE )for weight and size. Half were crossed out (sold)few remained Reading previous reviews and supposedly the restaurant front was a butchers we were always going to order some. We were told and ordered the HANGER STEAK $95 for 15oz was the best in New York by our( lovely) WAITRESS (she obviously hasn’t tried it because again we were misinformed ) and a Culottes $98 for 13oz (a particular cut of meat that was supposedly tender (again misinformed )both arrived with potatoes and we added an extra side of sweet potatoes Suggested by our (waitress) in case the meat wasn’t enought, two of us could fill up on potatoes !! (Classy) So enough said...even 2 Days after our EXPIERENCE MY BLOOD BOILS In short DONT BOTHER WITH BOHEMIAN !! ITS NOT THAT HIDDEN ! AVERAGE FOOD ! FAR BETTER restaurants in New York to spend your money on and experience. AND THE RUDEST WAITRESS IN NEW YORK GIVE IT THE CHOP !!!!!!

I loved everything about this place. The food the Staff the ambiance the fact that it is in an old Andy Warhol Studio building. If you are fortunate enough to score a table at this place you will not be disappointed Thank you Kim.

Go for the "tasting menu" its the best thing to do!!! You must make a reservation Be ON time!!! Arrive a few minutes early.

You have probably read about how difficult it is to get a rez at Bohemian. They dont accept walk ups and you cant just call . Their website is top secret :) and very cryptic. Most people would just give up.. but dont! I wont give the secret away, but will say you will have a wonderful time. After getting the phone number, we were told that they were full..However the lady indicated she would call us at 2pm that day if there were any openings.. sure enough at 2pm she called.. we were in! As people have said, you would never think this was a restaurant from the outside. Another couple waited as confused as us until we were let in. Bohemian seats about 35 people. Service is amazing and attentive. The cocktails are really hip.. yes try one its worth it! We had the tasting menu as well as a side of Sashimi. All 6 courses were something else! the presentation was wonderful and the food equally as good. We loved the fact it was quiet and not a place that turns tables quick. After complementing the waiter, he asked if we wanted to say hello to Chef (which we did). I would say if you like Japanese food, want a bit of adventure, a good story to tell people then try Bohemian! For 2 people with wine it was about $300 US. included tip.

We had the vegetable fondue, delicious! The tuna poke, excellent, we asked for a second order, the garlic shrimp cazuela, pretty good,.the miso cod, outstanding.Sat suma sweet potatoes, delicious and lastly the mushroom risotto. The service was outstanding!

By now you probably know that the Bohemian has quirks. No published telephone number. You have to get it from someone who has dined there. No street signage. Use the. Address and walk down the alley. Only seats about 35. Chairs are very uncomfortable. However, food is excellent. Most people choose the six course ($62 dollars) option. Plenty of food, most of which is excellent. Only flaw is that staff delivered the food, but usually walked away without telling us anything about the course.

Unique dining experience with untraditional marketing approach (recommendation/invitation required to book a table...) Untraditional sitting and very unique and untraditional food plating and presentation. Being a vegan my voices were very limited and not nearly satiating. The others enjoyed their meal a lot. Pricey though.,

On our recent anniversary trip to NYC I wanted to find a dining experience that was "unique" for me and my husband. Last year we experienced Eleven Madison and this year I wanted to try something different. I happened upon some reviews for Bohemian months before our trip and made it my goal to get us in for our anniversary dinner. After obtaining their secret phone number I made our reservation and then counted down the days until our dinner. After being dropped off by our taxi, we found the restaurant entrance near some graffiti on the wall...slightly intimidating, but very exciting at the same time. We rang the door bell and were seated in their cozy "living room" style restaurant. Our adventure began with the most incredible craft cocktails that we have had at any restaurant in any country that we had visited... wow! After a pre dinner drink we decided to go with the tasting menu so that we could try a little bit of everything. This is definitely the way to go...every dish was perfect. We spent a wonderful evening here with extremely high expectations...Bohemian exceeded anything that we had hoped for and we can't wait to return

Our daughter told us about Bohemia and we were amazed at the great experience. The food, the service were all first rate. The food was superb, each dish served by itself having perfect presentation, taste and aroma. The flavors were outstanding. Our server was very personable but not intrusive. We will not forget our experience. Bravo Bohemian!!!

I almost want to tell you it's terrible so it stays so amazing. Loved the secret location vibe and small feel of the restaurant. The food was TO DIE FOR. So SO good. Get the tasting menu - it's a great deal, but then also get the miso black cod. YUM.

Bohemian is a not-so-hidden gem of the neighborhood and I wish people would stop calling them for reservations, as it makes it harder for us locals to get a table. This tiny spot (maybe 20 seats) has a small but esteemed menu with several best of class dishes, and a quiet, elegant atmosphere. I dare say that their Mac & Cheese is the best I've ever had (sorry Freeman's) and the Sashimi is equally exquisite. In fact, just about every dish you will try here has something special about it, and if you like Sake, their Sake list is comprehensive. I'd eat here far more often if only it wasn't so hard to get a table. They are good with the waitlist though, so don't fret if you can't get a reservation.

I went for dinner with friends. It was hard to find as there was no sinage in the street. The restaurant is in the same building that Andy Warhol had his studio. Everything we had was delicious and the seating was very casual and comfortable. I particularly enjoyed the Mac and Cheese.

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Well, it's no Queen song but Bohemian definitely left me in a food rhapsody. My boyfriend took me here for a belated birthday dinner. He had told me weeks before that he was taking me to some exclusive spot, where you need a referral in order to score a reservation. I had never heard of that before and haven't been to many (if any) exclusive restaurants, so I was excited to see what the fuss was all about. Turns out, he wasn't kidding about the exclusivity. After walking through a hallway located adjacent to a pristine butcher shop, we rang a doorbell and a man opened the door and asked if we had a reservation. After confirming we were indeed on the list, he let us in. Bohemian is small - the entire place probably fits about 20 people. There's a small fake Japanese garden in the back, which gave the place a cute, cozy feel. The skylight in the center was also a nice touch. The only negative was the seating. It's not very comfortable but a few hours of back pain was definitely worth it for the food in this case. We decided to go with what seemed like the most popular option - the 6-couse tasting menu for $63. Here is what that entailed: 1. Farmers' Fresh Vegetable Fondue - this was unbelievably fresh. It almost tasted like they drove out to a farm somewhere, and picked it themselves a few hours before serving it. I liked the fact that it was served on top of some crushed ice. It gave the vegetables a crisper taste to it. The carrots, daikon, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, radishes came with a small fondue of some creamy sauce with traces of sardines, which was a great accompaniment and was not too heavy. 2. Uni Croquette - my least favorite of the meal. Then again, I'm not a fan of uni or mushrooms. It was fried to perfection though, so I'll give them that. 3. Washu Beef Short Rib Sashimi - my first beef sashimi experience and it was amazing. I first tried a piece without any of the soy sauce, wasabi, or pickled garlic that it's served with. It was good. But a little bit of each of those three ingredients is really what put this beef over the top. All of the flavors complemented each other perfectly and the sashimi almost melts in your mouth. 4. Pan Roasted Branzini - not normally a fan of pan-cooked fish because of the bones. It's too much of a hassle but this branzini was worth the trouble. Like the first course, all of the ingredients were really fresh. The quality of the fish is not something one could find at a supermarket. It was cooked with olives, mushrooms, zucchini, an entire bulb of garlic, and sardines (if you're Chinese: this tasted like hom yu). A choice between 5. Washu Beef Mixed Burger - this was just okay. The word 'mixed' makes me wonder what it's mixed with. I'm guessing it's mainly not washu. It was a bit dry. or 5. Sashimi Rice Bowl - the tuna and salmon were fresh, but I didn't like the jelly (not sure what is was?) that it was served with. The texture and flavor was weird. 6. Yuzu Panna Cotta - perfect end to the meal. I love panna cotta and this one was not overly sweet, which I really appreciated. The yuzu gave it a nice, refreshing flavor. Lastly, definitely try some of their expertly crafted cocktails ($14). As you might have guessed, they use fresh ingredients here too. There was this minty ginger one I really liked. But I would say go with flavors you normally like and you probably will not go wrong. My boyfriend and I both really enjoyed the cocktails we picked. When initially looking at the menu, we were afraid that it wouldn't be enough. We had assumed that each course would literally be a small tasting but this was not the case at all. We were stuffed. With the amount of food we got and the quality of it all, $63 isn't that hefty a price tag. Sure, it's not somewhere we'd be dining every week, or even every month, but at least maybe a few times a year. It would be nice if they added another variation of a tasting menu Or maybe if they switched it up each season because from the looks of these other reviews, it seems like everyone's eating the same things. Sometimes, you expect too much out of places like these and it ends up being overhyped, but Bohemian exceeded my expectations. I'm glad it was real life.

One of my favourites. The food was excellent. recommend the tasting menu if you haven't been here before. The drinks are one of the best in the city.

This place is great for those foodies who are adventurous where they like a bit of a challenge to get a reservation spot. The reward is tasty & unique food... & foodie bragging rights after! After reading some articles online about this restaurant, I really wasn't hopeful to get a reservation at all. When I was finally able to get their email address (a mini challenge in and of itself!), to my surprise the email response was prompt & friendly to the reservation request & and then included the phone number & times to call. After calling them back to ask for a reservation, I had to learn that the reservation expectation from the person who answered the phone. They ask to book a month in advance & so I had to call when the schedule opened then. (no earlier!) Thanks to Tripadvisor we saw what the building looked like or else we definitely would not have found it! We like variety & to order things we wouldn’t ordinarily make at home. We ordered the tasting menu along with the Mac & cheese. Be adventurous! In our hometown, we had uni in an authentic sushi order for the first time a few months back. That hometown experience was a terrible experience; the uni was cold and a terribly hard difficult to chew texture. We decided to give uni another shot in a different venue. We were so happy we did! The uni croquette at Bohemian is awesome! It should be eaten as is since the chef has intended it to be spooned together with the crispy croquette in each mouthful. Also outstanding was the Mac & cheese (they must use goat cheese as one of the cheeses- so gourmet!) & beef sliders with high quality beef. The waitress was reserved and the service was helpful and good. The atmosphere was quiet and exclusive feeling. It was pretty relaxed and I felt comfortable; it was not uptight at all. At some point there a lady came by without a reservation asking for a quick drink before a movie but was declined. No walk ins & they were strict about it that night! I was in town for my birthday that weekend which I mentioned in my first e-mail communication to them. See the photo I posted, as they presented our dessert with a birthday message without further prompting. Very thoughtful. There are other secret aspects to the restaurant architecture and set up, but not all should be revealed here. Just go and experience it yourself! This place is a must try for foodies who have the patience and time to make the effort for a unique dining experience. :)

I went here for a birthday dinner in September. We called about 2 weeks in advance to make a reservation. The person who answered the phone was very abrupt and made a little bit nervous to to to this restaurant. Upon arriving the door was opened by an individual who snapped "you have a reservation?". We were seated and another individual was our server. Our server was great and food was good, we had the tasting menu for about $58/ person. It wasn't the best meal I've ever had but it was good and once we were inside the service was great. I'm not sure if the phone/ door answering is supposed to be part of the mystique but it was a little bit off-putting. Still I would recommend this restaurant. Neat atmosphere and good food.

This is a very exclusive restaurant, I think that you have to get referred by someone to get in. We were happy that we could get a reservation and had a wonderful dinner. We had fresh sea urchins, some rolls with exceptionally fresh tuna, the beef sashimi and the steak. All very tasty. The meat is washugyu, their speciality, definitely worth the try. It's a small place, can seat only about 25 people at a time but very cosy. Very friendly and personal service. Must be the best Japanese in NY.

After seeing "Here Lies Love" (which you shouldn't miss) we found ourselves in the East Village, hungry without a lot of time on our hands. With my trusty tripadvisor app revved up, we decided on Bohemian since it was close and well reviewed. Instead of going into the details of finding the place (see below), let me jump straight to the food...the food was fabulous. We started with a bucket of oysters with a garlic/cider vinaigrette, and each oyster was a succulent delight. Next up was the fisherman's platter with seaweed, served cold. My wife loved the seaweed, which was not your run-of-the-mill seaweed salad seaweed, I was not so much but the seafood was amazing. Shrimps, bay scallops, half shell clams and a whitefish, sort of ceviche style, all mixed together and presented with full flavor aboard. We were almost feeling a bit full when our shrimp arrived, sizzling in a ramequin of oil, olives, tomatoes and garlic. They were perfect and when you dipped the shrimp in the special shrimp head paste,s seriously, mouth water, dip shrimp, eat, mouth water, repeat. Little toasted baguettes to mop up that sweet, salty oil and tomatoes was the finishing touch. I only wish we could have stayed for dessert. About getting in...super mysterious, James Bond like action to get in...so cool! No sign out front, just walked down a dimly lit corridor and the door buzzed. Asian guys looks at me and I say "Is this Bohemian?" He says "Yes, how did you hear of us?" I say "Tripadvisor" He, looks puzzled and repeats back, "Tripadvisor". I say"Yeah, you know the foodie restaurant review web site." He says " Do you have reservation?" I say "No, can we sit at the bar?". He says "Wait a minute" and the door closes. Door opens, we are let in and the rest is gustatory history. What a fabulous way to end our day in the city.

Came here as it was recommended from friends who have been a few years ago. The restaurant was empty, and we quickly found out why. Starters tasted low quality, and the sushi we ordered (which was incredibly expensive), was horrific. We were going to order the waygu, however after the sushi, we asked to cancel this dish. They then had the audacity to cancel the order, and still charge us $120 for it! Eventually they agreed to take it off the bill, but I have never experienced service like this, especially at a very expensive restaurant. The drinks were great, and the bartend was very nice.

I had so much expectation and was really disappointed. One of the waitresses was so unhelpful (over drinks and food information), detached and seems to be totally careless about what the place is about. She seems to be young but she should definitely change job. The famous Uni croquette was almost cold when it was served. it very kind of tasteless. The croquette skin was hard and thick. The mushroom inside was so so. I had better croquette. The garlic shrimp...Seriously....Anyone had the real garlic shrimp in Spain...? Million times better. Oysters and veg fondu were ok but I didn't need to be there to eat that. I don't ear meat but my partner had the beef sampler. He said it was "annoying" , different cuts with different cuisine and some not at his taste. Anyhow...I understand the hype as the vibe and decor were pleasant but not worth the price if you are someone who's been around the block. For tourists may be...All a bit pretentious...Perfect if you are a Wall Street trader or CEO on company expense account.

Bohemian is one of my favourite restaurant in New York. The concept, the atmosphere, the food- everything my taste. The fact that not too many people know about it (yet, and hopefully remains that way). We didn't order the tasting menu as we wanted to pick our own dishes. Everything there was so yummy- especially the Japanese steak, and it comes with sweet potatoes (my favourite!). Another favourite was the uni croquettes. Apart from the food, they also have amazing cocktails, really enjoyable dinner as always. They also have the same restaurant in Tokyo, will definitely try it the next time I go.

Bohemian is definitevely my favourite restaurant in NYC. Hidden behind a Japanese butchery, it is quite secret and almost impossible to book a table. Place is tiny with very few tables, super cool and nice atmosphere. Drinks are great but food is exceptional, a mix of Japanese and American traditional food, all served in the most beautiful dishes and trays. A very special place.

Bottom line: good if not a little overhyped, interesting concept, friendly service, some of the food was great, some need a little more flavor. We came here at 6PM on a Friday right when they opened, and were the 2nd table here for the night (although the place filled up by 6:45PM). The place is small and cozy, seating perhaps no more than 20-25 people per sitting. There was a nice selection of house cocktails and the bar was well-stocked. We went for the pre fixe menu because it is our first time. We were able to swap one of the uni croquettes with miso cod which diversified our options a bit. Our dishes are as follows: -Vegetable fondue - cool concept and the fondue was tasty with warm cheese and mushroom flavors, the carrots and turnips dipped the best, the purple cabbage was very bitter -Uni croquette - delicious, very fresh uni -Miso cod - no complaints here, nicely made and very rich -Wagyu beef sashimi - I personally thought it lacked infused flavors, this is served with sliced grilled garlic which adds some of the necessary umami -Grilled branzino - great presentation in a cast iron skillet and comes with a bunch of delicious roasted vegetables; problem is the flavor is completely soaked into the skin and the meat itself was on the bland side. We asked for yuzu sauce on the side which went well with the fish -Sashimi over sushi rice - good but not outstanding -Ponzu terra cotta - this was quite good and cleans the palate after an extensive tasting The portions here are well-sized, and though individually small they add up in the tasting so come hungry. The branzino in particular was massive! All in all, good experience to try out a "secret restaurant" but excluding the novelty factor, prefer some other great Japanese options in the city (ex. Aburiya Kinnosuke)

A boutique Japanese restaurant between Lafayette and Bowery. Less than 30 seats, I was taken as a guest and believe you need to be introduced to book a table. They recommend three or four starters between two, and one of the beef main courses to share. I had fresh oysters, the best I have ever eaten, with a cider dressing; sashimi with bream, tuna and fatty tuna, finishing with thin strips of rare beef. Their cocktails are out of the ordinary and as good as the food. If you can get a table....try it...Bohemian is fantastic

We were recommended this place and we couldn't have been happier we managed to get a last minute table. The food was really really delicious, I would highly recommend the beef sashimi as a must have it was delicious. We sat at the bar and watched all the amazing cocktails being made that looked delicious. It is a lovely cosy restaurant with a front living room vibe to it.

Wonderful, Japanese-American fusion restaurant that is hidden from view. No sign outdoors and entrance is through a nondescript alleyway on Great Jones Street. Must have reservation that is hard to get. The food is superb. The restaurant is small while the atmosphere is that of a very private club. To say that this place is unique is a gross understatement. It is well worth the effort to dine here.

Friends and I had dinner here last night. We got the tasting menu which was very good yet not as inventive as others claim it to be. I liked how the restaurant is off the beaten path and the ambiance genuinely felt like sitting in a friends living room. For the prices and the size of the restaurant, however, I found the service to be sub-par. Overall I would give this place a B+.

Quite apart from the fun, secret, invitation-only nature of this restaurant, its reputation is wholly deserved. The email correspondence I received from one of their staff was warm, welcoming and very helpful. On the phone, I was able to make a reservation from the UK at only about 2 weeks notice. The only negative I experienced was a slight confusion whilst ordering. It wasn't clear to me which dish might be suitable as a starter, and which might serve as a main - or essentially, how much food I could expect to get with each dish. That might be my own naïvety, and although the young waiter was perfectly polite, I was still left a little confused. We sussed it out in the end, and the food was exquisite. I've never eaten pork like it. The sashimi was also excellent, as were the miniature burgers, the cocktails, and the vegetable fondue. I can't recommend it enough. Amazing.

The secrecy and all the "effort" you have to go through to get a reservation pays off ones you get in. We were in New York last August and were lucky to get a table reservation, even with a short notice. I sent them and email for a request, where i also told a little bit of my self and why i wanted to dine in the Bohemian. As a big surprise, i got a very polite and friendly reply, including a phone number. The place was "hard" to find, due to the secret location behind a butcher. But after the hall way was found, there was just to ring the door bell to get in. The name Bohemian describes the style of the restaurant perfectly, it was very bohemian and i loved the style. The atmosphere of the restaurant is a perfect mix of trendy, cozy and hip and it is a perfect place to take some on who you want to impress or have a romantic evening with. Everything is surprisingly inexpensive and for the first timers i definitely recommend the tasting menu and try the drinks, they are amazing! The quality, taste and freshness of the food is superb, nothing more to add! Most definitely the best dinner in the states we ever had and this time we traveled around the country and even did some Michelin star restaurants, but nothing beats Bohemian with the over all experience. We are going to New York again in August and can't wait to have our second dinner in the Bohemian! I hope this place stays as a hidden gem and keeps their mystery.

We "applied" and got the number to this restaurant for a date night while visiting NYC. I thought it was very quaint and intimate. It's a small restaurant (maybe 20 patrons), but the service was impeccable. We didn't try the tasting menu, but made up our own. We tried the mac-n-cheese, black cod miso, sushi rice bowl and steak off of the special menu. We loved all of it, but would switch the steak for the branzino next time. Although it was good (esp the potatoes served with it), it was nothing extraordinary that we felt stood out. The other nazi party were amazing! No room for dessert, but definitely save room for some of their delicious cocktails! Can't wait to try some of the other secret locations!

Each time we return we have higher expectations, and each visit exceeds them. The combination of food, service, wine list, cocktails, and atmosphere is very difficult to match, let alone beat.

Usually places like this don't live up to the hype, but Bohemian did. In order to get a reservation you need to jump through hoops to find someone who has been and get the number. However, all of that aside the experience was amazing. The restaurant is small and feels like you are in someones living room. Food and drinks were memorable and great vibes. Highly recommend. Foie gras sushi and mac and cheese are a must.

We had the opportunity to dine at Bohemian recently. The restaurant is supposedly a referral only type of restaurant. our friend made the reservation for us. Since this is our first time at the restaurant, we just elected for the tasting menu option. We started off with a crudite dish. The raw vegetables was paired with this insanely delicious "crack" dip . We didn't know exactly what was in the dip, but we wanted to continue to eat our veggies to attain more dip. They should package it up and sell it to families that want their kids to eat more veggies. We continued on with an uni croquette. Typically many fried food are oily / tasteless / unwanted calories. The saltiness and delicate uni perfectly balanced the lightly breaded croquette. they continue on with a beautifully prepared fish in a dutch oven surrounded by vegetables. Overall, they know how to utilize their seasoning. Everything is perfectly seasoned from start to finish. Another rare experience where the entire meal was well performed.

We has the tasting menu and it was so good. Staff were friendly and helpful over menu choices for food and drink and selected some lovely Sake for us to try. Absolutely loved our meal and we will be back the next time we are in NYC.

My two sisters and I brought our two nieces(and my daughter)here for their birthdays. My sister had to call 30 days before and mention someone she knows to get the reservation. We walked down the hallway next to a butcher shop and had to be buzzed in. Our table for six was waiting for us. We sat at two couches at a glass table. We ordered a very nice bottle of wine and all had the tasting menu. We started with a beautiful vegetable bowl. It was so pretty to look at that we weren't sure we wanted to eat it but we did and it was delectable. Our next course was the only one that we didn't care for. We had (uni croquette) mushroom ball with sea urchin on top. Wasn't enjoyable. Next, we had short rib sashimi that was delicious. We then had pan roasted fish (branzino I think) that was so well roasted with crispy vegetables. As if this wasn't enough we then had a Wagyu burger slider and the side of macaroni and cheese we had to order!! Everything (except the croquette and that was just our taste buds, thus the five stars) was so well prepared and spectacular. We ended with a panna cotta and they also brought out vanilla ice cream on a board where they wrote "happy birthday" for the girls (both turned 28!). They must have overheard us because we never mentioned it was their birthdays! I would love to go back! I would probably order from the menu to experience something different at this wonderful restaurant!
Best meal so far
Super place. Difficult to get a seat but now I understand why. The food was excellent. The cocktails were outstanding as was the service.
