Worst 'Indian' food ever. Fake Lane

By Niamh N |

Avoid avoid! The food is not indian more like a tin of soup with meat added! The korma was so bland and boring, I had the vegetable platter for starter and it was covered is chilly spices for no reason that I could comprehend- inedible. And such a rip off.

A must for curry lovers visiting NY

By RichiePH |

Found myself on a business trip with my partner in NY, had to make my way to this curry house after the Man VS Food episode. Was not disappointed, GF had Lamb Saag and I went for the Phall, which was spicy as it should be but not inedible to a chilli head. Food was cooked perfectly and atmosphere and sevice were excellent. Recommended.

Love the curry!

By LRE4Life |

Excellent curry, excellent dahl, great choices for nann and superb service. You cannot go wrong here especially if you love curry!

Nice

By TravelsOA5ftOner |

I came here due to Man v Food and also because I am from London and I wanted to compare this to the Curry Houses I would get in a Brick Lane. I ordered the chicken bhuna with garlic naan bread and was giving a starter compliments of the house. So the waitress was very attentive I couldn't complain there and was very friendly and welcoming. Starter garlic naan bread - it was ok nothing to shout about a bit oily in the centre and crispy. Main - rice - it was ok needed a bit of salt but the texture was fine and if you finish your portion you got more if needed Main - chicken bhuna this was just ok the chicken was a bit dry but some if it was nice and moist. It was described as being well spiced and I don't believe it was but did taste better then the rice n Side - garlic naan bread I think this was the best part it was a but think as in almost as thin as a crepe otherwise I pretty much enjoyed. Overall the food was fulling and I didn't finish it however I wouldn't go back as it just did not meet y expectations.

Family

By Cdonald692 |

Great service and food with a young family. Not an old fashioned place open outlook very near the Show Stomp

Standards gone down

By UGReview |

Dirty sticky tables to welcome you and the food is below average which is a shame as it used to offer good authentic food.Best to avoid now and at $12 for 2 somosas that has the best one of the most expensive somosas in the world!

Lovely food, excellent service

By victoria4411 |

My husband and I really enjoyed the food, it was very well cooked and flavoured. The waiter was very friendly and attentive but didn't hover. Also the prices were really reasonable. Would highly recommend!

Brick Lane Curry House Closed.

By BlodwenLancz |

We are here on holiday from UK, and decided to visit last night. Surprised to find it closed with notices on the windows and doors saying it had been 'Seized' for non payment of taxes and was now held by the City of New York. This may be temporary...who knows.

Worst Indian Food In My Life

By squibjib |

We tried the food at the 93rd street location & it is so bad I'm actually blown away. Everything we ordered was almost inedible. Chicken tikka had no taste whatsoever. The curries were watery & so hot it was painful. The nan had almost no taste & was soggy. If you love Indian food do not go to this place. Our waiter was nice but this place is absolutely terrible.

Solid "American" Indian on UES

By NYCinBp |

Solid Indian on Upper East side. Menu very like many Indian restaurants in New York. Expect a good meal, but nothing extraordinary or original.

Okay curry, not as good as anticipated

By Pimmsy |

Booked a curry for two whilst on holiday in NY, I have eaten at many Indian restaurants around the world and had great expectations about this establishment and was left feeling a little disappointed. Firstly it isn't cheap, not by Indian food standards anyway and secondly the food is okay, not fantastic. The restaurant was very cold, I almost put my coat back on! I was surprised when we were served freezing cold plates to put our food on, very strange as one usually gets hot or warm plates, personally I wouldn't go again but glad to say I have been...

First time here

By Angel L |

I have not eaten Indian food before so I have nothing to compare this with. The group I was with said this was one of the best meals they've had. The staff was helpful and made great food suggestions. I will come here again for the cauliflower appetizer.

Phaal Challengers

By Gareth P |

Coming from an area of England where we have the best curry houses, this was not the best standard of food. But it was ok. The staff were good. I did the phaal challenge and completed it, got my certificate and sent picture in but they no longer bother updating the website it seems.

Food excellent

By Jonathan A |

After seeing this place on man v food my wife and I decided to seak it out and sample the cuisine! Food wise we were not disappointed. I had a lamb bhuna which was spicey with a beautiful thick tasty sauce, the lamb chunks were melt in your mouth gorgeous, cooked to perfection. Ruth had a vegetarian dish which also had a thick and tasty sauce. Our slight niggle would be price $20 for a main and $10 for a starter plus $8 for a beer, sure they do throw in the rice and popadoms but $80 for a meal for 2 seems a tad expensive. Maybe its the time of year but it was quiet so the atmosphere suffered as a result. Overall, tasty curry, probably on a par with some quality curry houses back home.

Delicious food and friendly staff.

By Bart F |

First time for three of us and we'll be back. The portions were generous and the food was tasty. Nothing we had was overly spicy, just perfectly seasoned. We stayed away from the more spicy dishes...this time.

Pretty awful.

By Travel_Reviewer-7 |

Coming from England I was looking forward to finding a good Indian restaurant in NYC. My girlfriend and I went here for Sunday lunch and had their buffet. For a start the place was deserted, never a good sign. Staff were less than helpful and after showing us to our seats did nothing else - didn't explain the buffet, where we could get plates, what options there were, whether naan bread was being served etc... Buffet had a selection of very unappealing looking curries (chicken, tofu and a few others) along with a few pieces of very dry tandoori chicken, a few final scrapings of rice left and some sauces that had spilled all over the bowls and looked even less appealing. I had a few bites and stopped eating. I'd really advise not going here for Sunday buffet. I can't comment on their regular table service outside of Sunday lunch, and perhaps this is a lot better, but I won't be going again to find out. The search for a great Indian restaurant in NYC continues...

Great food, excellent service

By lwsmith10011 |

This is my go-to curry house with friends, usually a big group of us. Food and service have always been great. Beware the "b'hall" challenge, but do ask for a taste. It is the hottest thing you'll ever taste.

Best Indian Food on East 6th Street

By Mickpamg |

We where staying in the East Village whilst holidaying in New York. On East 6th Street as is happens. East 6th has several Indian restaurants, so the competition is keen. As keen travellers we enjoy good food, particularly the spicer eastern cuisine. Brick Lane is surprising large once inside, it was almost full of patrons as we were seated. The menu is extensive, but still relatively simple with many of the dishes you expect in a good Indian restaurant. The service was friendly and helpful. The food and drink prices were reasonable for New York. We really enjoyed our meal and the whole experience, I can recommend this restaurant.

The real deal!

By MrBrownShoes |

Simply put - this place has the best curry offerings in the Northeast. Great selection of curries from various regions - meaning sweet to hot (to ultimate heat). Have been there 5 times and everything has been fresh and nothing appears to be yesterday's warm overs. Very tasty. Very traditional. Great value based on portion size. Call ahead and pick up curb side from car! Only (small) gripe - would like more naan per order. I go out of my way to get here once a month at minimum!

Great Indian Cuisine

By John D |

My wife had the Haryali Tikka and I the Malai Kofta, and both were excellent! The atmosphere was quite nice but spacing a little tight as the floor area very small. Service was excellent - not too hovering and not too absent. The pricing was a little on the high side ($4 for naan, $8 for a large bottle of Kingfisher, $15 and $16 for our meals, respectively). Several cuisines next door on either side and as we live nearby we (and you if you check it out) have plenty (tapas, noodles, sushi, italian) of other choices.

Very Good Indian food

By mwoodgate |

Visited with 3 friends on a Thursday night. We had samosas, pakoras, onion bhajis to start. Mains were lamb bhuna, chicken jalfrezi and chicken Tikka massala. One person was vegetarian so had more bhajis. Selection of Naan bread and house rice. They also gave us a complimentary gazpacho (cold mint). We had a load of beer too. Food was very good no complaints. Starters came out first which we ate before we ordered the mains. I like that as you're not rushed. Service great too. Pleasant ambience would go again definitely.

Curry not better 5 yrs later

By jkraft |

Had enjoyable meals here 5+ yrs ago (Native New Yorker here who had his first date with current wife of 25 yrs. at Mitali on E 6 St!) but last night something was missing. Like an olive or onion or lemon w the "straight up extra dry martini" which was too vermouth-y and pieces of ice floating within. When I mentioned the garnish to the waiter, I at least expected a coupla olives on a stick from the bar..nothing. The constant water filling is oppressive, sometimes mid-bite when you have to stop eating to make room for the WAITER to refill your half empty glass, and around the table so EVERYONE has to endure this imposition. Less is more, guys. We came early, around 6 when we were closed out of Xian famous noodles for lack of seating, and were out at the absolute back table. My wife, a former manager of a Midtown restaurant and I agree that we SHOULD have been seated at the bay window in the FRONT to encourage business and walk-ins (a definite possibility on a chilly Fall Sunday evening in the E Village). Pushy on the ordering, too, trying to up-tick our order. Seasoned as we are, we ordered what WE wanted. Good garlic naan and curries and meat patty thingy the wife ordered. Rice kinda clumpy and uninspired w frozen veggies. Remember a more satisfying experience some yrs ago though still decent Indian food. (We usually now eat veggie Indian at House of Dosas in Hicksville LI NY). Get a bartender who knows their stuff please and chill out that DARNED WATER SERVER!! Reliable food and the lamb in curry was fairly tender, which is a plus. Priced high for the 'hood, though.

Excellent curry house

Brick lane curry house is on 2nd Ave and about 5street. It’s very good and best to make a booking. Robot serves the food from the kitchen and food is very good. Recommended

Faux British Indian

By Jim C |

This restaurant and bar is close to many other South Asian restaurants, and is trying to trade on the reference to the Bangladeshi area in London and Anglo bits and pieces -- Union Flags, Fullers ESB on draft, association football (soccer to Americans) on the TVs. But the dishes are rather mediocre and not authentic, the waitstaff and clientele appear to include no South Asians whatsoever, the menu is pretty weird for a curry house, and the bread menu is nutty -- does not even include plain paratha or nan. The person who took our order, who appeared to have some supervisory role, said they could of course produce plain parathas and nans. The nan was fine, but the alleged paratha was no such thing, and they had the nerve to charge $6 for it when anyone can buy a frozen one that is cooked in two minutes for 50 cents at their local South Asian grocery. Service was slow and lackadaisical, and everything was over priced for what was delivered. Not recommended at all, you can do better within a few hundred meters.

Just like home!

By Kepples |

Being English, married to an American, in NYC with 2 English friends, the pressure was on to find a good quality Indian restaurant. They didn't disappoint! My CTM was delicious, my husband said his Korma transported him back to his first curry in England and my friends from back home ate every bite, although did say the biryani was very spicy. The cauliflower appetizer, which was recommended, had a sweet honey coating and was very tasty. The onion bhaji (which are hard to find in PA) were amazing! Friendly staff, very attentive, all in all it was a great meal.

Came for the P'Hall challenge

By Paul T |

Lots of competition in "Indian row", so not sure if this is the best Indian restaurant but it wasn't bad at all. I actually thought the P'Hall challenge would have been harder =)

Very Good!

By mwoodgate |

Been to Brick Lane several times, this is a third location on the 2nd avenue/5th Street area. Always the same menu. Had samosas and poppodums to start, both very good, with Lamb Rhogan and Chicken Jalfezi. Good meat and sauces quite different textures and tastes as they should be. Peshwar Naan and house rice completed the meal. They don't have liquor license yet so mango lassies very good. Quiet at the start of the meal but busy at the end, cozy atmosphere. No complaints, reasonable prices so recommended. A pleasant change from Curry (Murray) Hill...

One of the best Indian meals ever

By flashman232 |

This is a late review as we went here some time ago, but playing catch up on my New York reviews. We wanted to try an Indian in NY as we are from Birmingham, UK which has a fantastic range of Indian restaurants. The restaurant was tiny at the time (think it may have expanded?!), with only a handful of tables, but the atmosphere was good, the decor basic but fun and the service excellent and not in your face. The food itself was superb in every way, from the starters, breads and main meals. Full of taste and spice, great colour and fresh. We had a great night and still talk about the food there.

Delicious, informal, friendly

By W.H. D |

Posed this Indian spot because it was close to LaMama -- and glad we did! Comfortable, affable staff, very good fare. Loved the Goan Curry with lamb and the tandoori chicken. Cauliflower app was awesome.

Great Indian food!

By CityDogsSailing |

My friend and I shared he also paratha which was delicious. I had the chicken tikka which came out sizzling, all white meat with basmati rice....so good! Wine was very reasonably priced as well. I'll definitely go back!

Pretty good curry for a reasonable price

By Padraic Meehan |

I've been here a few times and it's always been good. If you're reading this, you already know about the Phaal Challenger. It's difficult, but not impossible and most people willing to take it on make it through with a certificate. They also offer a very reasonable buffet option for $10, but the best quality food is found by ordering from the menu.

Not What It Used To Be

By RiverRat68 |

This place just seems to have lost something after relocating a couple years ago. The service is OK I guess, the food is not as good. I have successfully completed the Pfaal Challenge 3 times and would regularly visit BL for the good service and great food. Those days may be over. Disappointing.

Great Recommendation, don't miss it signage is small

By James H |

Don't miss it you will be mad, great food, very authentic and large portions, but done well, haven't had curry like this since Pocklington, UK.

Curry Challenge....outrageous!

By Phil D |

At the last minute me and two friends decided after arriving from the UK to go for as curry. We saw Man vs Food 're hottest curry in the world challenge and I ended up doing it. My friends had curries from the menu and really enjoyed the food. Really nice staff. I did complete the challenge and it was the most ridiculously hot thing I'd "EVER" eaten.... (without exception ) great night though. Well worth a visit of in New York.

Definitely Lives Up to the Spicy Hype!

By Natalie V |

Brick Lane is a gorgeous restaurant with a wide variety of unique offerings. It's mostly your typical Indian fare, but definitely on a more upscale side...which is clearly reflected in the prices. My friend and I had an early dinner here, so we were the only ones in the restaurant. Our server was quiet, polite and attentive. He was great about answering questions about the menu choices and never overwhelmed us with his presence. We both got appetizers and to be totally honest these were my favorite part of the meal. The basil garlic naan was INSANELY delicious. I still dream of that naan! The distinct basil flavor and the flakey, pillowy naan go perfectly well together and I wonder why this is not more common--I guess basil isn't really a spice associated with Indian food. The samosas were also top notch, perfectly crunchy on the outside with well-spiced, tender innards. For our main meals, my friend got the chickpea massala while I tried to be a bit more adventurous with the vindaloo curry. Obviously this place is known for its spicy curries, and even has an eating challenge associated with one, but I didn't want to feel terrible the rest of the night so I opted for a mild choice--let me tell you their mild would definitely be hot everywhere else. Even an hour later, i was feeling the heat, and I am normally pretty accustomed to eating spicy foods. This dish was actually my least favorite of all, there was a lot of spice, but I don't like when spice overclouds the variety of other flavors and this definitely did. All I tasted was spicy and texture. However, it was interesting to see tofu dishes on the menu because this isn't usually an ingredient I associate with Indian food. My friend's chickpea dish was tasty, if slightly bland. It did add a nice warmth to meal, almost like a batch of home-cooked mashed potatoes would--just very comfort foody. Overall, the meal was good and the service was great. I would definitely come back, if only to get that basil naan again and maybe try out some other curries and dishes. The bill was definitely on the higher side, so I would recommend this place for a special occasion rather than a regular night out.

Delicious curry!

Lovely atmosphere and delicious food. They have a large selection of curries and tandoori dishes. Karim always amazes us with new cocktail additions and impecable service!

Brick Lane NY as in Brick Lane UK

By 117LauG |

We were looking for as an inexpensive meal and came across this Indian restaurant highlighted on my travel guide. No fancy decor or atmosphere, it does remain similar to those in Brick Lane in UK. If you enjoy wine, BYB will be such a reward. There are some good wine stores nearby. While waiting for the meal, we got some complimentary papadam and chutneys to snack on. The lamb jalfrezy curry and lamb biryani were both amazing. Both were delicious and so filling. Service was pleasant yet not overwhelming. Overall, if you are looking for a cheap yet tasty ( and spicy!) meal in East village, head for Brick Lane Curry House, you won't be disappointed.

Disappointing and overpriced

By Rob A |

Disappointing, disappointing, disappointing! I had heard many good things about this restaurant but it lived up to none of them save the decor and atmosphere. The food however was a mixed bag of poor and uninspiring dishes. This is a cuisine I have grown up with, I know it well, I have learnt to cook it over many years, in many places, from many faces. This was not authentic, many of the dishes had an unpleasant sweetness. In my Jalfrezi the bell peppers and onions had been cooked separately from the sauce leaving them with a texture of stir fried veg rather than unctuous, yielding and slow-cooked. The chicken was dry. The whole meal was way, way overpriced but in particular the chapatis were silly, back home 25 to 50p each, here $5 for 2. Put simply expensive and not good enough.

one of the Best Indian food in NYC!

By hmphhh! |

Food is flavourful, spice levels can be adjusted, quantity is decent. Staff is cheerful. We were a group of 12, so v tried quite a few things- Samosa chat was yummy. Thumbs up to mutter panner, Malai kofta, Saag chicken, sizzlers [both vegetarian and non vegetarian] and naan. I will visit again.

Incredibly good $9.99 lunch buffet

By Melanie |

This is one of the best Indian restaurants for the price. For $9.99 you wouldn't expect much in NYC but this was an amazing find. The lunch buffet offered naan, pappadums, soups, samosas, chicken tikka masala, chicken tikka, two rice dishes, saag paneer, vegetarian curry as well as two salads (lettuce/cuke/tomato or fruit). None of the dishes were overly spicy or firey hot but were very flavorful. Inside it is small and dimly lit and the tables are a bit cramped but in a cozy way. The waiters were extremely attentive, polite and were constantly clearing plates or providing more water. I would highly recommend this place but would recommend arriving before 2 p.m. because they do not always replenish items on the buffet.

My Oh My!

By Andrew G |

Ate hear during a NYC visit in autumn. Recommend by a YouTuber we follow. Quite simply fantastic. Great food. Great service. Excellent value. There's even a robot waiter, but we only got humans. This place is home of The Phal Challenge. I wouldn't even think about it, but good luck to those who do.

Still Very Good

By hunsdorfer |

After acknowledging a mistake in not having recorded my phone reservation the staff was particularly wonderful. We were seated comfortably and received several beers on the house. What a gracious and appreciated gesture. We ordered a large meal and everything was prepared beautifully. The food remains delicious. The service just right and a generosity of spirit is a very welcome touch. We shall return.

Worst curry you can get

By Jhericurls |

Was taken down to 93rd street because my friend wanted to do the "The Phaal Challenge" should of been called the "The Foul Challenge". I didn't order it but my friend did and it was disgusting, very chemically. I ordered the chicken balti and it tasted like watered down tomato soup. The chicken was some kind of re-engineered meat and I tasted better from microwave meals.

Mixed Reviews

By NascarMom5 |

We were a party of 5, we visited the 53rd St location. Our adult Son wanted Indian food after his graduation. I chose the restaurant based on Gluten Free options and a review from CBS. The service was incredible, a very G.F. knowledgeable waitress. It seems the only appetizer that is G.F. is the Prawn Balchao, everything else is fried in the same oil. That being said 80 % of the menu is gluten free. We started with drinks, the Pinot Grigio on the menu is not available so they substitute a really cheap bottle for the same $30 price ( which in my opinion is a 600% markup) . Oh and No Indian Beer was available at the time, only the old standards. Appetizer ordered were Pakoras and Samosa, which others said were good, not great considering everyone at the table has eaten Indian food before. I had the Prawn which were G.F. and they were very good, nice mix of sweet and a bit of heat. They served 6 small shrimp for $14. Which was a normal price for NY. Dinner was a mixed review, mine was Lamb Saag. The lamb was very tender, good flavor, but it lacked something. It was more of a mush pile of brown spinach and no real curry pack, no real flavor and I can swear it was beef not lamb. Considering when you walk in and leave the restaurant all you smell is curry, which is a great aroma. Others ordered, Tikka Masala, Chicken and lamb good flavor, then again not great. The goat Madras was properly the best dish of the evening and one was appointed with the Jalfrazi. We were 5 and they only brought 2 bowls of rice with the 5 meal. The naan and kulcha as other have stated is basically a pita cut into quarters. Everyone at the table said it was so so. With an average price of $22.00 per entree, for 5 small pieces of meat is a little high. No, we will not be back. Service was our only saving grace. Total $300 for 3 appetizers, 5 small entrees, bottle of wine and 3 cokes. If your gluten free by health reasons, yes do visit. Your safe, but don't expect a lot of food or flavor.

Hidden Gem

By 805MAYDAY |

My wife saw this place on Man v Food. When we got there in the freezing cold, it was a small place. We were welcomed in and were placed at our table with no booking. ( would recommend making a booking if your a big party) The food was fantastic, great value for money and they staff were friendly and polite. Highly recommended.

Amazing

Perfect curry, amazing staff who are so friendly and helpful. Also managed to get filmed too :-D great night was had by all.

Good for my mouth and my money

By attongo |

Chicken salad with valsamic sauce and vegetables: excellent. Then chicken with a medium spicy curry: excellent. Service was so good. Then I asked for the check: I couldn't believe. Also the price was excellent. What do you want more? It's easy: I went back to eat here two days later. Great choice.

Once Again,Brought My Wife To Brick Lane To Sample Their Curry Dishes.I Have Read A Review About This Eatery,Saying Its Standards Have Gone Down,Completely Not True!!!!!So Many Indian Restaurants In NYC Have Went Out Of Business But Brick Lane Had Stayed StrongAnd For Me( From The UK ),Easily Remains As The Cities Best Curry House,Hands Down.MY Wife And I Have Been Eating Here For Years And Make A special Trip Here Before Going Home To Upstate NY.

Good value for money

Good, Spicy fod - we had 3 different currys - friendly staff and reasonable prices. I Will absolutely recomment This restaurant.

Superior Food Quality!!!

By Richard S |

This Indian restaurant offers top notch food quality, slightly below average portion sizes and acceptable staffing and okay atmosphere in a small Restaurant setting. Overall it is highly recommended.πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Suggest you call for a reservation.

Okay but over hyped and over priced

By Ronan M |

Fairly average restaurant experience with nothing really stand out for fans of Indian or Bangladesh food. Service was fine but should have been as it was during the super bowl there was nothing offensive even the phall . It just does not justify the 70dollar a head .

good delivery indian food

By maris235 |

we ordered through seamless and the delivery arrived right on time. the food was tasty and the portions very big. it doesn't come super cheap but definitely the quality is high! just be aware that the food is generally very hot and spicy, at least for my standard so if the say is medium hot for me is very hot! enjoy!

Great food!

By Greengal06 |

My friend and I wanted to have Indian food and we found it at Brick Lane Curry House! The meal began with complimentary papadums. We also ordered an appetizer special similar to fried mashed potatoes. They were light and fluffy and the perfect way to start our meal. For dinner my friend had the butter chicken and I had the chicken vindaloo. The waiter warned me that the vindaloo was hot. I enjoy spicy food but this was and 8 on a scale of 1 - 10! The chicken was tender but it was too spicy for my taste. The nan was delicious as well. I'll definitely go back and try something less spicy!

Amazing curry!!

By FlightSam |

Brilliant night-it is BYO but there is a very reasonable bottle shop next door. Try the phaal-it’ll blow your mind!!-the brea, tandoor and curries were fantastic-worth coming back to NYC just for dinner!!!

Go to the lower manhatten restaurant

By Welshtraveller247 |

I tried the phaal curry, yes it is hot. I 'nailed the meat within 10 minutes. The challenge is within 30 minutes to eat all. I was staedily making my way through it then got told I failed due to time. Come on guys, give a man abreak. Let your customers know how long is left. Apart from that the prices are reasonable, but the restaurant is really small. When I say small I mean like a very small siiting room from the UK, crammed with 4 tables and chairs. Go to the original restaurant for more space.

Stop in if you like curry

By Mark_Parkville_MO |

I saw this place on Man V Food and just had to stop in, since we love spicy food. We didn't to the Phaal challenge, but I did get the Bhuna that was very flavorful and not as spicy as I would liked. The food was very good and the service was great.

Over priced for store bought quality!

By Cprymaka |

I had heard a lot about Brick Lane and it was on my list to try out. Everything seemed fine until I was greeted with store bought poppadoms, charred to make it look like they were made on site. They were awful. We ordered two simple curries, with rice and a peshwari naan. The rice was from Britain in the 1970s. Plain, with pre packaged frozen veg for a poor attempt at some colour. What happened to pilau rice and cardamon? The naan was a travesty - clearly store bought but of the lowest and most disgusting quality. All in all, it doesn't live up to its name, and certainly not to it's pricing. I'm glad i'll never go again.

Excellent, rich curry

By Maus |

Go for the food, not the decor. I stumbled on this little hideaway and thought I would try it. Coming from abbotsford, canada I know a thing or two about curry, I had the lamb vindaloo, beautifully spicy with that lovely aftertaste, a smooth and subtle saag, raita and onion naan. Good service, friendly people, and wonderful curry!

Lunch!

By travelbug1031 |

Yummy in my tummy! Had lunch off the menu and my husband had from the buffet. Perfect for each of us. He got to try different foods, and I got to enjoy a meal with my diet restrictions. I had the Miolee with shrimp, which is gluten and dairy free for those who need that info. Ate all the way till I was scraping the bowl haha! Craving Indian?? Go! Enjoy!

Tasty

By Wilburt1 |

Will never live up to the real Brick Lane..... Service slow initially, but worth the wait. Great atmosphere, good food and well worth the visit.

So delicious.

By seaweed21043 |

Every time we go to NYC, we go to Brick Lane for a meal. It is tops on our list of favorite restaurants. The food and service is outstanding. There is something on the menu for everyone especially if you are sensitive to heat. You can order food on the mild side to very hot. Yum! We like to eat at the East 53rd street location as it is smaller and usually less crowded. The little nibbles they give you to munch upon arrival are de-lish.

Great Food, Spartan Ambience

By JDOMJW |

The place to go if you want to broaden your curry palette. They offer 11 different styles from mild Balti to incendiary Phaal. You can each with one of eight proteins - Tofu to fish. The portions are good sized and the waitstaff is helpful. We've gone multiple times, trying different combinations each visit. My favorite is Chicken Bhuna; my wife's, Lamb Vindaloo. Both go well with Kingfisher Beer. BTW - we've been eating Indian food for 50+ years, including in India.

$11.99 lunch = great deal

By Moochik M |

Arrived around 3:30 pm, in time for the $11.99 lunch menu. Okay service, good food. However, lamb curry dish tasted like mutton. Left that behind.

Midweek trip

By icj00624 |

Thought I'd check this place out considering I'm from London and have been to the London Brick Lane for a curry many times. Nice atmosphere and service, food was pretty good but the cocktails were really weak.

By far the best Indian restaurant in East Village

By KKua |

You don't come here to dine.... it's just to eat. There are finer dining destinations for Indian cuisine, but this one takes the gulab jamoon prize. The quality is very consistent. Sadly, I brought my friends here on the Sunday of father's day. They are so understaffed and we were so hungry we kept ordering cocktails to fill up our belly. For my picky Mexican guests, the spice and piquant levels were just right for their highly desensitized palates. They enjoyed everything I ordered for them. Try the phaal with either lamb or chicken, their vindaloo with lamb and definitely seafood on the grill. The seafood flavors are often lost in the sauces.

Hottest thing I've ever put in my mouth

By David F |

And I mean that. I tried the phall, thinking I'd be able to do the phall challenge (because I do love spicy food). And I failed MISERABLY. I ate about 1/4 of the dish, and then picked off my friends plates. However, everything was very tasty. Seemed a bit pricey to me, but then I don't live in NYC. Ambiance was great.

Disappointing

Neighbourhood curry house where the food is mixed as in either really good or poor... the service lacks on all levels as in 40 minutes to receive drinks after the appetizer had been eaten. The tikka masala aloo gobi and tandoori prawns and nann bread good. The other dishes tastless and very disappointing especially the biryani and chicken bhoona. The staff whilst friendly seemed disorganised especially when only six tables occupied and we were the only ones to order all others were in the middle of there evening. Very disappointing considering the standard of the other brick house outlets.

Looking for a hot curry.

By OllieMac1972 |

Tucked into a tasty Vindaloo having chcikened out of the "Phaal" Aklan Richman challenge. Regretted it as Vindaloo wasnt really that hot!

A better than average curry house with service flaws

By Sankarmukh |

We a party of three had a reservation at 7 pm. After we arrived, we were seated right across from the door and under the bar. It seemed a like a place where they will sit walk-ins. However, we seated right away, no complaints here. We ordered a draught beer and tea but was told that they don't have tea but can give us lipton tea. We got some teabag and hot water but it costs $3.00 which is probably OK in Manhattan. For food, we ordered Vegetable pakora, Tofu Shaag, Goan Shrimp and Garlic Naan. Food is quite good and the server was efficient but the service is odd. Our foods came without any dishes and cutlery because they removed them all after our appetizer. The server never came around and though I finished my beer sometime earlier, I never got a chance to order another. Anyways, no issue and they provided the check right away without asking for any dessert etc. The service, to say the least, is lacking. The check for three wih tax and tip was $115.00.

Excellent!

Recommended by a friend, and so glad we tried it! There is a lunch buffet, but we ate A La Carte to try different things. All dishes were awesome, very well seasoned and flavorful. Worth the trip to East Village

Holy Cow I loved it!

By DebbieE610 |

We loved this restaurant!!! The food was great! The atmosphere was great. But I think the most important for us was the service!! We are not well versed in curry, and she guided us well!! She made our dinner great!! Thank and Enjoy!! I need to add that this would not be a good place for small children that may have a problem with spicy foods.

Best Curry in NYC

By Peaches_091 |

I come from the UK and we are obsessed with Curry and Indian food over there so when I came to NYC I went in search pretty much instantly and was recommended by friends to come here. The curries are exactly what I like, great flavour, quality meat and vegetables, no additional salt and fat to cover up lack of taste as they are all freshly made from proper authentic spices. I love the Bhuna, the Balti and the Korma. If you really want to go for it you can order the Phaal but it lacks taste and is only there for maniacs, you can order the sauce on the side if you want to sample. Appetizers I like are the Samosas(best ever tasted) and Onion Bhajis. Tandoori oven bests are the Lamb Chops and Chicken Tikka. You have to wash it down with a Kingfisher Beer. The owner actually used to own an Indian restaurant in London's original Brick Lane so he knows what he is talking about.

Excellent!

By Vahe K |

Literally : this is a curry house. They serve 12+ variety of curries, a few tandoori dishes but don't have much more on the menu. My curry madras was excellent and so was the service.

Fantastic lunch buffet, Phaal challenge was crazy hot!

By psudino |

We had previously been to the Brick Lane in Ridgewood with my friend was fancies himself a spicy food aficionado. The Phaal there wasn't that hot and bland, so we made sure the next time he was in town we booked the real downtown location. First, for us not crazy enough to do the challenge, the lunch buffet was great. I definitely ate too much because I wanted to enjoy as much as possible of that delicious spread. Second, the Phaal challenge here is completely different than the Ridgewood one. That was evident as soon as the dish was placed in front of my friend, because our nose hairs were singed. In Rdigewood my friend found the curry hot, but nothing out of the ordinary. At this location, he ate about 1/4 of the dish before throwing in the towel, which he had been using to wipe the sweat off his face. I tried the Phaal here and even though I had one bite, it took nearly my entire lassi and a plate of masala chicken to clear the heat. Behind us was a Malaysian guy who did complete the Phaal challenge. He was in the zone with earbuds in and he just plowed through it. Overall, this was a good time. If you, or any of your friends, think you can eat anything spicy, this is the challenge that could be the make or break.

Good LES Dining

By Rockrolex |

My wife and I ate there after seeing a matinee at The Public Theatre. The food was very good and the service was excellent.

Quite disappointing.

By Saba |

It was a very limited menu with some interesting presentations, but missing many basic Indian dishes. Most sauces were uninspiring with the exception of the creamy coconut chicken. Pluses were the Kingfisher Beer on Tap and the service. New York and Curry Hill have much better to offer.

satisfying food

By sheela g |

We went there last week with my family. We liked the food very much. This was my second trip. I went before 2 years to eat there. The service also is good like food. Weall enjoyed the food so much.

Barely recognizable as Indian food

By Chris E |

I ate here with my wife and another couple from the uk. We're all lovers of Indian food. We all ordered different dishes and none of them had any spices or heat at all. The sauce was pretty much the same for each dish. I had a meal at this restaurant several years ago and it was excellent. What happened?

Great for date night

By mlh85 |

Loved this restaurant! got the appetizer cauliflower (delish- had a sweet and sour kind of flavor), tikka masala and lamp chops. We also ordered a side of the super spicy sauce... Which it was indeed. All food was delish, cooked to perfection. We sat at the table closest to outside so it was great for people watching. Its pricey but it felt worthwhile... Great food and service... Lovely all around

Fantastic Indian meal!

By lance1713 |

We found this restaurant on TripAdvisor and gave it a shot. We're big Indian food fans and enjoy it spicy. The food here was excellent! Great atmosphere in the East Village and a comfortable restaurant. We had a basic meal of Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo and Bindi Masala and all were delicious! Generous portions with the perfect balance of flavor and heat. They didn't ask how spicy we liked it, but definitely hit the nail on the head, at least for our palettes!

Not the Brick Lane I have been to.

By Brenda C |

Over the years I have enjoyed a number of curries in Brick Lane London. We were excited to come here for an authentic Indian meal. Sadly, the food lacked any real depth of flavour. It was OK ish but I would not recommend or go again. The service was fine and the BYOB was a bonus but I wanted it to be good and it wasn't.

Some of the better curry I've had.

By Chris C |

I had heard a bit about Brick Lane and decided to stop in after being in the area. Not too much to say as far as atmosphere, it's a fairly normal Indian restaurant. The smell coming from the kitchen though left me feeling confident. I was in town for business and was dining alone, so it was a pretty quick and simple meal. I decided on my usual that I get at home, lamb Vindaloo. It had excellent flavor, the meat was well done and the heat was perfect. The naan was some of the better I have had and was extra tasty with the curry. This was easily some of the better Indian food I have had and would definitely stop back if ever in the area again.

Excellent food, good service, we'll be back

By giftgrrl |

My husband and I keep looking for Indian food like we enjoy when we visit London's Brick Lane. This is the closest we have found in the US. We live in San Francisco, and even here we cannot find Indian food that we like. This was excellent quality. We had the lamb vindaloo, and the madras chicken, both super flavorful with layers of spice. And my husband loves spicy food, so had to try the phaal. Which our server correctly advised had a bit of bitterness and not much flavor and was just super hot - so we ordered that sauce as a side and tried small tastes. It was HOT. Stick with the normal preparations, this is great food.

Savory goodness

By Irma C |

New space which is warmer, larger and more accommodating (full size bar and comfortable wooden booths) along with the same delicious, delicately spiced (from warm to fiery) food and gracious service make this restaurant one of the best Indian in New York City. Reasonable prices, ample portions and friendly and attentive waitstaff. Highly recommend.

Great Indian Food on 3rd Ave in NYC

By John M |

Brick Lane has a great menu of English-style Indian Food including tasty Tandori oven specialities and many curry dishes from mild to super-spicy hot!

Not a patch on the real thing

By Jubbo |

I visited the restaurant with a colleague. It was a Friday night so we had to wait at the bar for a table. No problem with that. The food is so far from what you get from a curry house in the UK. The main course curry's were OK. I would give them 5/10. Comparable to a very average takeaway in the UK. The appetizers were horrendous. We had Samosas and Onion Bhajis. The Bhaji's were patty's which were barely crispy on the outside and very dense and cloying on the inside. The Samosa's were the real horror show. They reminded me of a Cornish Pasty. Very heavy and dense, the filling was a mashed up paste with no real flavor. If a restaurant in Brick Lane, London served food like this, it would not last long. If you are in the area and really want an Indian meal, avoid the appetizers and go straight for a curry.

Not worth the trip - massively disappointed

By Naypat |

Drove into the city to finally try Bricklane for a family birthday dinner. We were so disappointed after our appetizers that we didn’t bother to stay for dinner. As soon as we walked In we had a feeling it was going to be a bit off. There was no hostess, no bartender and the dishes at our table had to be cleared as soon as we were seated as they had curry around the rims. Drinks took 40 mins- I never send wine back but we sent the bottle of Pinot noir back as it had gone bad. The lussania Gobi which was highly recommend tasted light cauliflower with ketchup. The pakoras barely had any batter therefore making it a plain fried vegetable. The chicken from the-sizzling was so tough it was inedible. Our waiter tried his best but the restaurant was understaffed with no manager in sight. Never again.

Bad starter but amazing curry!

By Emily G |

Being from England - I would say bar India we do some good curry! We researched this place as we had been recommended it and decided we would try it out. The place was empty when we got there but the decor was nice and it seemed comfortable place to eat. We ordered pakora's to start and I ordered a Tikka Masala and my husband ordered Goan Chicken. The starter came and i'm so sorry to say this but it was awful. The batter on the pakoras was really thick and not crispy at all. Bland tasting and all round disappointing. I really though to myself it was going to be a horrible experience. However, the curry came and I have to say it was bloody delicious!! Absolutely amazing and I would go back for the curry alone! Great tasting and plenty of it. No need for the carrots on top of the rice though, kind of a odd garnish! Would recommend for the curry as it was THAT delicious!

Found my 'Go to" Indian restaurant!

So just moved to the NJ area and i think i have found my favorite Indian Restaurant. Small but great service and food. CTM and Lamb Bhuna hit the mark! Wine delivered from the nearby store is a Montclair thing but such a nice touch!

Malai Kofta and Panner Tandoor!

Everyone is usually good at indian food in the city - but to be great and be CONSISTENT a,t it is not something that can be achieved easily. Go Brick Lane!

Something for everyone

Our waiter recommended dishes based on spice level preferences and was right on. Dishes were flavorful and filling. Our waiter was helpful and pleasant. We would certainly go back.

Great Indian food in North America

By Gary B |

This place has several locations in the city. I like this uptown location best. With patience, a nearby parking spot can be found and the folks around 92nd Street are less pretentious than downtown. The faire is Indian traditional with British Indian influence. I went for the buffet and was nearly overwhelmed with good choices.

Solid Food. Good Experience

By scottmanheim |

You can't go wrong with Brick Lane. It's a solid restaurant. Good service, not too expensive. Hits the spot when you want Indian food.

Closing in on 'OK'

By yukondoit |

This used to be my favorite curry house. I'd say after my last two experiences I still enjoy it but I believe I'll be looking for a new Indian restaurant next time I come to NY. Last time I was here, they spilled a glass of wine down my friend's shirt and apologized verbally... Not much else, and they ruined his suit. This time there was no incident, my waitress was adorable and we had most of the restaurant to ourselves... The food just isn't as good. The samosas were incredible, I usually order veggie korma and it was alright. It wasn't mind blowing. I've had better, on at least five other occasions there. The place is adorable and I love the ambiance but the food just was kind of bland compared to what I've had there in the past. Not sure what's going on. I recommend this place to a lot of people and I've been coming for years so i was disappointed. Still good, but not as good as it used to be...

Pretty decent lunch buffet

By KidLove |

Went on a whim with my wife and children and had their buffet. It's been a while since I ate Bangladeshi style food and enjoyed the biryani and other items provided. My chilren always picky eaters were able to handle the spices and heat of the food and ate well, always a good sign for my wife and I. I could easily come back to this restaurant in the future.

Grade Pending

By PhileasFoggontour |

Those Brits will know what I was seeking. A good curry house, complete with beer and likely populated with clients wearing replica football shirts with the names of 'Gerrard' and 'Lampard' and perhaps (more hopefully) 'Noble' on their backs. And on sixth street there was plenty of choice. BLCH is a standout. One its dining room isn't in a basement. Secondly the menu can be read in a minute rather than seeming to offer ever combination of meat and sauce that could exist. It was also the most expensive - chicken curry being $20 rather than the $11 at the other places. Still, quality has its value. Rather more of concern was the 'Grade Pending' from the Health Authority which suggests some disconnect between the inspector and the owner as to the correct rating. So, cheap and grungy with an 'A' or the BLCH with no rating. I decided to take a chance. Inside it is tidy. The small tables are jammed against the wall, the larger ones enjoying more space. There were no replica shirts instead a couple of ladies dining and either a very young yummy mummy or a nanny with her three young charges, each dressed in their school uniform. None of the charges had taken the obvious step of writing their favorite footballer on the back of their blazer. The food was fair. Not great, not terrible, my Madras having a hint of burnt which might have been the lingering of too much curry leaf. There was plenty of meat (mutton might be my guess rather than lamb, but then that's not a bad choice anyway) along with some nice fluffy rice. The Stella I ordered looked just as it would have done in London. The end bill was $48. By London standards, a cauliflower appetizer, a nan, curry and a beer not too terrible, but in New York, here it seemed a little expensive. I need to try some of the other places but my guess is that the price differential between the BLCH and its neighbors is wider than it should be. There's nothing here that will come as a surprise, neither positive or negative. I'll try other places before I think of returning. Not bad, but there has to be better.

Nice little place, not what we expected though!

By Danielle R |

Visited here with hubby. It’s a great looking small restaurant, nice and clean inside and the staff were lovely too. Nice glass of water and bread basket served as you sit down. However no cutlery or napkins on the table. We had to get up and search for them ourselves when our food arrived. Menu is quite basic. I found my tikka masala just tasted like a spicy Heinz tomato soup, I didn’t even finish it all as I wasn’t that keen. The meat was ok. It’s quite expensive in my opinion, especially for what you get. We ordered 2 starters and 2 mains. A side dish, couple non alcoholic drinks and a couple alcoholic drinks and the bill was nearly $130 without tip. Even a pot of mango chutney was $5. The price is the reason for no 5 stars, I’d maybe recommend it but not sure we’d return again ourselves. However it was the only place we’ve managed to have a peaceful meal whilst in New York so that was nice. I’d definitely recommend getting a yellow taxi to this restaurant if coming from near Times Square. While I know this is nothing to do with the restaurant we feel it’s best other tourists/travellers know from our experience. We used the subway to get here from Times Square and was chased through the subway off a beggar who absolutely terrified me; he did get quite threatening until hubby pushed him away. Resulted in me having a panic attack and I’m pregnant too. And it wasn’t even late when we visited. Was only afternoon. We got a cab back which only cost €13. A small price to pay to arrive there safely.

You really could be on Brick Lane

By Rachel W |

New York is not renowned for Indian fare, but if you're looking for a British style Indian this is the place for you; I couldn't comment on whether it's close to authentic Indian, but it's good enough for me! There is a huge selection of currys on the menu each which come with a choice of 6 or 7 different meats. Spicy-ness seemed accurately described and each of the three dishes we ordered was distinctive and delicious. If you have bad memories of currys swimming in oil, you need not worry. Prices are good and portions substantial even for the hungry. My only complaint would be that service was slow and the restaurant over-chilled and "fanned" for my liking (but I am sensitive to this) so, only 4/5!

Food was okay

By suman M |

Staff was great but food was just alright. I am of an Indian background and didn't think the food was that good. Their super spicy curry sauce is extremely spicy and not worth it. You will be having diarrhea for days.

Great place for lunch.

By Will R |

We're enjoy the $10 lunch special at this restaurant. There is a good selection and the food is fresh. The space is smalll, so we go on a Saturday when it's not so busy.

$10 Buffet Can't Be Beat

By Luci_J_M |

We stumbled upon this restaurant while looking for a place to eat before seeing Stomp around the corner. What a deal! $10 for a yummy Indian buffet with everything you possibly could want from the Naan to salad, to tasty entrees and even chai tea and rice pudding. Would go back.

Is this the Man Vs food curry house.

By Terry H |

I wasn’t convinced I was in the right place,it is a bring your own booze place , didn’t know before hand son had to drink cokes. The food was nice, the woman serving wasn’t very polite the guy was great. We got there about 7ish didn’t have to book for a table place was pretty empty. Best entertainment was a guy attempting to eat the Phaal πŸ˜‚ I enjoyed my meal.

A bit pricey but delicious

By Tardykat |

I guess this must be a chain. We visited the East 53 St location on a snowy Saturday when most of the restaurants on the block were closed on the weekend. Only one other table was occupied but they were doing a very brisk business with take-out. Tried the tofu biryani and the chicken tikka masala. Very good. What looks at first glance to be small portions ended up to be very filling. A bit pricey in my opinion but it was good so I suppose worth it. The more interesting is the lunch boxes / to go for $11.99 where you get an appetizer, choice of curry, choice of veg of the day, rice and nann and a dessert. Might look into this one day.

Phaal

By kwwaheed |

This restaurant was located on 253 53rd St E New York. We developed a taste for Indian cuisine on this New York trip and heard about this restaurant from a friend. We were lured by the fact that they have something called 'Phaal Challenge' so we tohught we would try it. Their website said anyone who makes it through the challenge would have their picture placed on their walls. As we walked in, we noticed there were no pictures of anybody. We mentioned our interest in the Phaal challenge to our waitress who recommended we try a small amount first. She also informed us that if we ate too much we would not be able to enjoy your meal. Thankfully, we took her advice. I had part of a teasopoon and could not have any more. It was incredibly hot. Phaal is one of the hottest forms of curry available, even hotter than the vindaloo, it comprises a large number of ground standard chilli peppers, or a hotter type of chilli such as scotch bonnet or habanero. Typically, the dish is a tomato-based thick curry and includes ginger and optionally fennel seeds. So we understood why there were pictures on the wall. Fortunately, since we took your waitress' advice we were able to enjoy the dishes wee ordered. The had murgh chicken and shrimp and for dessert rasgula. The spices were beautifully combined to make each dish mouth-watering. A must do n New York.

Wow Biryanis

By Saurabh Aggarwal |

Being a regular at this restaurant I earned a lot of their complementary coffee mugs, gifts etc. but on a more serious note, the biryani was my staple for most of my weekends. Found the spices very balanced and savory. Made friends with the chef and servers 😊

A nice curry when you have a curry craving in NYC

By shalovesny |

I had heard of the Brick Lane curry house , but only the one on E6th St came up when I researched it , so we were pleasantly surprised to come upon this one whilst we were walking south from the upper E50's. it is between 2nd and 3rd Aves on 53rd, in a narrow little brownstone terraced building up a couple of little stoop steps to a tiny porch and into the restaurant which seats about 10 people. It was around 3pm in the afternoon , but we were off to the theatre early that evening so as we had just grazed on nibbles all day we decided to have a curry. Now the food was nice , how a curry should taste (although we did only go for the run of the mill Korma,Chick tikka masala, and Rogan Josh and a poppadom starter -although tiny quantities of dips with the poppa doms) The staff were friendly , and the waiter was chatty. It's not a complaint as I'm quite laid back , but just wanted to let anyone know if you were thinking of going that the place is so tiny that to get to the bathroom you have to go through the narrow kitchen ,past the sink full of dirty dishes and the hot pans to get to the bathroom at the back- we were fine with this , but I can understand if others may not be , especially if you are taking very young children to the bathroom. Have had better curries at home , but this said I would still probably try the branch on E6th St next time I am in NYC.

Great food...yet disappointed with amount of meat for dinner

By Janet S |

I love Indian food! So when my sister suggested we order an early dinner, to be DELIVERED, from Brick Lane Curry House off 3rd Avenue near 92nd Street, I was excited. We ordered 2 dinner entrees - Lamb and Chicken - and although the curry/gravy was very good....the meat was minimal (sort of lunch size order.) We called immediately and after a bit of kind complaining - they delivered us more chicken with curry. I was very pleased with the additional meat. Thank you Brick Lane Manager for listening. Hope your customers appreciate you and your delicious food!

Lovely

By Andrea M |

We had a lovely meal here tonight, my other half got the vindaloo and I had the Goan curry. The vindaloo was lovely and spicy and full of flavour and the ingredients were all really fresh. My curry had nice fresh prawns in it. It was a little pricey but very tasty we'd definitely go back if we had longer in New York

Good food, SPICY curry.

By JZ Colorado |

Came here for the weekday lunch buffet earlier this winter before heading to see the tree in Rockefeller Center. The buffet was laid out nicely with a 3-4 meat options and 3-4 veg options, plus rice choices, appetizers, salads, and chutneys. Also ordered a "side" of the famous Phaal to see how it how. WOW. Dipped my fork in it once, stirred that into my daal and BAM that was enough heat for me. Ended up taking the rest of it to go and I'm STILL working on finishing it. I use it to spice up my food at home now :) Good service, clean restaurant...would definitely return.

Absolutely delicious!

By EAPHUGHES |

So glad I ordered dinner and had it delivered! I thoroughly enjoyed everything I ordered. The food was perfect, still piping hot and there was so much of it, I made three meals of it!

Very hot food...

By dreamgirl83 |

I was going to do the phall challenge but I am glad I didn't. I got a paneer vindaloo and it was very very spicy. :) I also tried 'The Ghost' cocktail - if you can take the heat - I would recommend it.

Brick Lane Too 235 E, 53rd st.

By Phil |

Can not fault this restaurant for authentic curry Brick Lane UK style. See through the decor of the restaurant which is also a bit on the small side and then sample the delights of the food. The only recommendation I would give is that the beer could be colder which is a constructive suggestion only. We had tikka masala, jalfrezi, daal makhani, naans and rice. The food was top notch, prices ok for quality food and service. Try the phaal if you dare ! Would not hesitate to recommend this place and we can't wait to go back ! A must do for curry fans.

Not too bad...

By David M |

My wife and I visited here while in NY. It was our wedding anniversary and as curry lovers (we eat curry wherever we go, often overseas!) plus having seen the restaurant on Man Vs Food, we thought it would be cool to try. We made a reservation in advance calling NYC from Manchester, England and this was easy enough; we even received a confirmation text and reminder on the day. The restaurant was quiet for a Friday night at 8:15pm. We ordered quite a lot of food (it's quite expensive for what you get) but the food itself was ok. Not the best but not the worst. I did try the Phaal Curry Challenge which I thought I would polish off. Having tried Phaal and Vindaloo in England, this was a hundred times hotter than any of them and after three spoonfuls it gave me hiccups and burnt my throat to the point of discomfort. Staff told me that it's a challenge which is made to be unpleasant and nigh on impossible so it just seemed daft. No flavour - just peppers. I ended up ordering another dish.

Oh the Flavors!

By Richard W |

At the last minute we decided to have dinner before the New Year. Looking through my groupon offers for restaurants in the community we decided on Brick Lane because it met our desire for unique seasonings and a vegetarian menu. No regrets, we found parking on the street one block away, was seated immediately and had a meal paired with an excellent wine in a matter of minutes. The food was great, portions were sufficient and the service was great. The atmosphere provided an intimate setting for starting a new year together and to count our blessings.

Good Indian food at reasonable price

By JoeRNY |

On a street full of Indian restaurants this stands out for ita good food at a reasonable price. Four of us ate for under $70 which included a glass of wine and tip. Service qas fine though a bit stretched by a full Saturday night crowd. One complaint - it was a bit noisy. But overall worth going to.

Phaal Curry - thats the highlight of this place

By sourabh_dhawan |

Awesome & authentic Indian food. The phaal curry is the highlight of this place. Its very spicy & I don't know how many folks have managed to complete the challenge. We were a group of 3 & couldn't finish even a small bowl of it.

Too busy putting away dishes to take our order

By Cathleen H |

This restaurant could be REALLY GOOD except the people they have working for them don't seem to get that it's a restaurant. We arrived for our reservation and we were shown to a table and then left there for 20 minutes without menus or drinks or anyone checking on us. It was cold so my group really did not want to go elsewhere! There were only 2 other occupied tables. Even going to the bar to get a drink did not help as the bartender was too busy putting away dishes to actually pour us our drinks. 3 of the 5 red wines on the menu were not available. Complaining did not seem to get the bartender to understand that he actually needed to stop doing bar chores and serve the customers. The food when they finally brought our order was good. Too bad, the bartender and waiters were so utterly lost!

Another Brick in the Wall !!!

By EK602013 |

Went with the recommendations based from TA , and wasn't disappointed . Good ambiance ,great service and food good too. Except the Pieces in the chicken vindaloo, a little too large . Suggested to the owner that maybe the chicken pieces should be smaller . Oh yes, missed our Prawn Balchao as the server wasn't making notes , but trying to memorise our order. All turned out well ,as it would be too much food otherwise.

Authentic it isn't - but it's ok

By papah76 |

For anyone used to British Indian Restaurant food then you'll be disappointed as this is more akin to meals prepared with sharwoods or pataks cook in sauces. It's very much caters towards the American palate, very little spice, more sweet & tangy. Naan breads however were excellent. For anyone of my compatriots looking for a curry fix then I'd advise to wait until you get home and go any try one of the other hundreds of cuisines available in NYC. They do a phaal challenge which I'd be happy to answer any questions on if anyone's interested, I had a pain in me gulliver all the way back to the hotel.

Decent curry

By Derek H |

Went for lunch by myself, curry dishes were spot on. (maybe because I was peckish lol) drinks were nice, and the service was ok, but they did seem to be rushed off their feet. Food, value and atomosphere in total was satisfactory.

Best server ever ( Nandini)

Amazing place and delicious food but nothing beats the energy and best service I have had in a long time from Nandini ( our server). She made the whole experience 10x better. Such good attitude. Will definitely be coming back here.

Food was average but fun experience

By Tommy P |

Saw the clip from man vs food and had to try for my self. Restaurant is nice and cosy and service was good. Didn't have the guts to try Phall so went with the vindaloo. Not too hot. Did have the phall on the side and tried some on my nan. Oh boy. It was insanely strong. Would never been able to eat it :) chicken was a bit dry though. Fun experience with the spicy food. The food itself was just average I'm afraid

So-so, depends on what you order

By Cyd0nian |

In reality, a 3.5-3.75 star rating. This is for the location at 235 E. 53rd Street, which doesn't have a page on here for some reason. We stopped in here on our first night in NYC, and maybe we should have gone to the East Village location (which I believe is the original). I found the food to be really up and down in terms of consistency. We ordered samosas, which had great flavor. My husband ordered shrimp vindaloo which was very weak - he is pretty accustomed to vindaloo, specifically British style ones, and he said theirs was not up to par. I tasted some and didn't feel like it was nearly spicy enough. I ordered Palak Paneer, medium spicy, and it had nearly the same level of heat. We had the basil naan which was decent and interesting as well. Overall, I've had better curries elsewhere and I felt like the meal was overpriced for not enough spice. As a side note, one small irritation for us was that we were seated DIRECTLY next to another 2 person table (as in, extending my arm slightly would have made me elbow one of them) but there were other tables with more space available. Just a pet peeve.

Best Indian Food!

By Mishell T |

Every time we visit NYC, we must stop at Brick Lane! The food is delicious, and the service is outstanding. Some of the best Indian food I have ever had the pleasure of eating.

Delicious Indian food, warm hospitality

By ScissorsAndPens |

The most delicious Indian food imaginable, served with warm friendliness in a beautiful brick building. The chicken tikka is splendid, the curries were tasty. Naan was crisp and warm. It's served by Indians who are very friendly. Like eating in the home of an Indian friend. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Sugar is added when order is mild or non spicey

By Chm57 |

I ordered two curries with mild. But i got the curries with sugar added and it was sweet. Indian food, mild spiced does not mean to be prepared with added sugar. It is the worst kind of curry I got with too much sugar. This establishment lost its touch with its original recipe.

An excellent lunch buffet, and a very pleasant dining room

By ArthurFink |

The was one of the better Indian buffets that we've had, served in a delightful space. We're from out of town now, so haven't been to this place before, but it's certainly on our list of places we'd like to return to.

Exceptionally good!

By Saurabh Aggarwal |

Now this place has been frequented by me more than any other. Perhaps more than Duane Reade, which speaks a lot about it. At the price its not a cheap fix, but the quality of food it offers is expcetional. The balance of spices, the aroma, all make this perhaps one of the 3 best biryani's I have had anywhere so far!

Great food and ambience

By mwoodgate |

I go to this place often with other Brits. Spacious inside and cool in the summer. Great starters (Samosa or Mixed Grill are my favorites) and I usually have the Chicken Jalfrezi. There are some spicier options if you are brave enough. Consistently good and not bad value for money!

Best Vindaloo Anywhere

By Jeff S |

I have not previously been to this location and have eaten their lethal Phaal at the now closed 53rd St.location. I asked to taste the Phaal sauce as they have changed the chilis from Ghosht to some local version of habanero out of Carolina that they claim is 10 times hotter. The Carolina Reaper is in the official record books as the hottest in the world. I didn't mind the heat, but I felt they had traded the complex flavor for the sheer heat. So I opted for a Lamb vinadaloo instead. Having eaten this dish in India in places where my local friends told me it was the best, I was surprised to be served the best Indian dish I have ever eaten. Better than the Bombay Brassierie in London or the old (70s) Veeraswamy's in the same town. The sauce was exquisitely thick and tasty with no thickener other than tomatoes and other natural ingredients that delivered the classic vindaloo acid pungency without tasting "Vinegary". The aroma gave one's senses a prelude clue that something great was going to hit your palate. The lamb was quality meat, not just "stewing mutton". It was beautifully tender and cooked into the sauce versus dry, chewy meat with sauce poured over it. Whoever did this knows about vindaloo. There were some glitches in the meal and service, the strangest being that my friends who treated me were told they don't serve any Indian Beer. My friend, originally from London and lifelong curry lover was more than stunned at this revelation. He felt his Lamb bhoona was average and I wonder if his tastebuds were missing his Kingfisher. I had a bangain starter which was decent.

i've had better indian food

By L2santhanam |

Went to this place for lunch, i order chicken tikka masala, naan and a mango lassi. I was dissapointed. The chicken was tough seemed like it was reengineered from another meal and the taste of the curry was bland... This was NOTHING like the London indian food. There are much better options in NYC, i won't be returning.

Excellent experience

Visited with friends over Xmas, great food and good service. Highly recommended, rich Indian food, and beer

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE

By Melinda L |

Went to the midtown Manhattan Brick Lane curry house excited to attempt the Phall challenge, checked the website and booked twice after having no reply even though the website stated to book the challenge ahead. Arrived at the restaurant and said I'd emailed ahead for the challenge, and the waitress replied with 'Huh? We dont check any emails' After that lovely first encounter she showed us to a very snug table in the front of the restaurant, not even enough room to pull the chairs out thats how close it was to the wall. After being handed the menu I smelt something funny, and directly behind my head on a ledge there was an uncovered tealight candle which set my hair on fire. Needless to say I was extremely upset, demanded the managers details which he was EXTREMELY RELUCTANT to give and offered no compensation, just said 'I'll file a report, sorry' i was so appauled at the service in this place, and the complete ignorance for safety, who the hell puts a candle less than 30cm from someones head? This place is a joke.

Awesome Indian!

By Alan Zucker |

This review is for the Brick Lane Curry House located on 235 East 53rd Street, which is part of the same restaurant group... Several years ago, my wife was visiting her friend in NY and went to Brick Lane Curry House. She has the fish moilee and became obsessed. At every subsequent Indian restaurant she would ask if they had the moilee. It was never the same. Today we went to the Brick Lane Curry House on East 53rd Street and I had the opportunity to share in her obsession. The moilee was just amazing as was the rest of the meal. We had a Alan paneer, mali kofta, chicken korma. All were made with such care and had wonderful flavor. Since we were there early on a Sunday, we met the chef and spent some time talking to him. He is from India and trained in Germany. he was an amazing man and shared his recipe for the moilee. We had a great meal. Enjoyed the service and look forward to returning when we return to NY.

Wonderful!

By marlobaker |

I am a curry enthusiast and love extremely hot food. This place, although modest looking and humble decorations, is one of the best things in the city. Try it.

Very Good Expereince

By hunsdorfer |

Nice food, nice service, nice atmosphere. Worth a trip for a very pleasant meal. Enjoyable with very tasty food.

Great food great price!

By GlobeCruiserDuo |

We went to visit this restaraunt after seeing this on man v food and it was excellent value for money. We didnt have the sit down meal we had the all you can eat buffet which was very tasty and had adifferent variety of rice dishes , meats and starters that you could choose from. It was excellent value for money as this cost both myself and my partner $10 each. We will definately be visiting this place again.

Great Indian food in a modern setting

By ochassot |

A trendy Indian-British restaurant with a few great classics. You may order some very hot food (phaal, be aware, this is really powerful). Brick lane Curry House also features a full bar and craft draft beers, which is not always the case in Indian restaurant. Enjoy!

The Best Ever

By Gale J |

I treated four of my closest friends for dinner the other evening to Brickland Curry House on 93rd street, my coworker had told me about this place so we decided to try it. The service was excellent and the food was wonderful! I travel frequently to the UK and find this cuisine as good if not better than the food I have had on Curry Row! Good Job!

Good value for lunch

By RP_traveller_2013 |

Came here on the suggestion of a friend for lunch. The value for the lunch special is good - you get rice / naan, lentils, chickpeas and with your choice of curry (I had the paneer) and rice pudding for dessert. Is it anything to write home about - no, but it's decent Indian food, with relatively quick service for a very reasonable price. The dΓ©cor is minimal, but clean. If I were in the neighbourhood, I might try it again for a quick lunch.

Decent curry in NYC

By Nannarpite |

Got here 15 minutes after our reservation time, but hostess was very nice and seated us right away. Service was quick but not rushed; food was well priced and good sized portions. There's a definite British feel in this place (and I'm not just talking about the Union Jack's and Tube maps everywhere). The spiced onions - which I haven't found on in any US Indian restaurant - were even better than the ones I had growing up in Britain. I had the matar paneer and my husband had the chicken korma. Both were good, but we'd probably have enjoyed them more if we hadn't just taken the cab ride from hell. Would certainly recommend giving this place a try.

Always terrific

By Paul R |

We've loved these restaurants for years. Always spot on food and good service. We usually go in for dinner but made it to the lunch buffet today. Ridiculous! All the typical Indian buffet choices but all at non buffet quality. Top of the line alla carte perfection. Inexpensive and high end. Impressive.

Like curry, hot curry? Can't Phaal here

By myklnz |

Brick Lane is famous for serving some of the hottest curry on the planet. Man vs. Food filmed an episode here. With a nod toward Brick Lane in London, the undoubted curry capital of the country where curry is the unofficial national dish, this Brick Lane strives to deliver quality Indian cuisine in an unassuming atmosphere rife with the redolent smell of spices from the subcontinent. While a variety of dishes with varying degrees of heat are available on the menu, the star is the Phaal curry purported to be the hottest curry on the planet. The cooks wear gas masks and hazmat suits whilst preparing it! They offer the Phaal of Fame challenge whereby if one consumes an entire serving of this flammatory dish they provide a certificate, feee beer and general applause from the patrons. I for one did not partake in the challenge but did order a side of the Phaal sauce with my Vindaloo, which they happily obliged. I've dined here previoulsy and always enjoyed the food, though not the top example compared to curries I had on the true Brick Lane and others spots in the UK, would recommend. At any rate upon digging in to the curry with the Phaal side I encountered a heat unbeknownst to me, even for one that pours scotch bonnet sauce on my morning eggs. Though searing, a multitude of flavor came through. I managed to get through the entire amount provided and my dining companion observed that it appeared I had been drugged. Endorphin highs are like that! So, while I am not officially a member of the Phaal of fame, I believe I am an honorary member. Had to buy my own beer though :)

Excellent Indian Food

By Runnerny2244 |

This place is really a hidden gem. The food and service were both amazing. I had the tandoori chicken and it was fantastic. My friend had aloo gobi and she loved hers. Would definitely come in here again!

Hot & Expensive

By Vinna G |

Went to try their new open branch at 93rd St & 3rd Ave, fancy dining place. Friendly staff & decent food but very little meat for such pricey meal.. tried their hottest Chicken Phaal dish, it's HOT!!! Be warned!!

Very spicy

By ChrisT1211 |

When we were in New York we were trying out different restaurants each time we ate, including a few from Man vs Food. This restaurant features a Phaal challenge, the hottest curry there is, obviously we didnt order that and played it safe and ordered a biryani. At least we thought we played it safe... A biryani should not be spicy in the slightest, we couldn't finish our meals because we found it too spicy and the waiter claimed that a biryani is a mild curry - true, but this was not mild!! I wouldn't know if the food tasted good or not because the spices took over my tastebuds. I reckon even a korma would be spicy in this place.

Consistently Good Indian on the East Side

By PattyAC20 |

The restaurant offers a lunch buffet which is very tasty and is a good way to determine what specialties one may like without ordering a whole meal. We usually go for dinner which we did last night and had the chicken curry and the chicken with spinach. Not meals were very delicious and spiced just right. All the breads are fresh and tasty and the raita is also just the right thing to cut the hot taste. The vegetable samosas are also exceptional. We have been going there for two years and have never been disappointed.

Fantastic!

By Rudy M |

Even considering the fact that I arrive at the last minutes of lunch hour, the food was fantastic. I love Indian food and the flavors of this restaurant ranks in the top of my list. I highly recommend. Plus, all you can eat lunch buffet. What a great deal!

fantastic food!

By ian h |

Made a reservation for Monday night 17th December. Staff so friendly and welcoming, made us feel right at home straight away. We started with meat samosas which were huge and so delicious, then my wife had lamb bhuna plain rice and garlic naan bread, which she says was one, if not The tastiest curries she's had! I went for the phall curry challenge (lamb). The first few mouthfulls were divine! and the lamb melted in my mouth. ignore any reviews saying it's just heat and no flavour the garlic, chilli and spices are perfect . About a quarter of the way through the heat really kicked in and it really is HOT!!! but you can still taste the fantastic flavour. Three quarters through and it's really burning but i managed to finish it off,to be congratulated with a much needed beer, then all the staff appear to applaud me and give me a curry monster certificate. This was a fantastic night made extra special by the staff. Thanks brick lane.

A different Brick Lane Curry House

By shalovesny |

On a previous visit we had tried the other BLCH in the UES , which was tiny and to get to the loo you had to go through the kitchen which was narrow and tiny. The one we went to on our recent trip to NYC, was in the East Village and was much better, - wish I could be more adventurous but I had the Chicken Korma, two of our party had the chicken jalfrezi and my friend had the chicken tikka masala. To start with we tried the pakoras ,bhajis, and samosas between us all. The food was very good . The only downside ? - again one tiny loo - at least not through the kitchen this time.

Solid neighborhood Indian, good takeout

By Ed K |

Usually a solid bet for above average Indian dishes and they'll almost always accommodate off-menu requests. The chicken tikka masala is pretty good, as is the black daal. Very convenient takeout and delivery, and they have a nice bar.

Not a great curry

By Matt_chelt |

We wanted to give this place a try whilst we were in NY having seen in on MvF. I suspect they get a lot of custom from this as they didn't seem to put much effort into our dishes. I love curry and love hot spicy curries. All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't order the phaal as my main meal. It was hot, as expected, but I've had similar strength curries in the UK but they still had flavour. This was disgusting, it tastes of powdery mud that just makes your mouth hot. It would be nice to get a tiny dish of this free as many people must go here to try this, instead it's $5 for a pot when you just want a mouthful. Our main curries were not spicy at all and were just quite bland. We were rather disappointed and wish we had chosen elsewhere, it was also expensive for what you get. If this didn't have the MvF connection we wouldn't have given it a second look.

Solid Indian Fare

By Macy120 |

We visited Brick Lane Curry House on a recent trip to NYC. I have to say, everything we ordered was very good. However, I feel as though I have eaten more authentic Indian cuisine in the city. The Vindaloo was tangy with a distinct vinegar taste. The Korma was creamy and savory, but I've enjoyed different Korma where they added pistachios and dried fruits. The Vegetable Samosa was serviceable but lacked complexity and did not contain any peas that I could tell. Overall, a pleasant and satisfying Indian dining experience, but as I mentioned, I have had better.

Expected more

By David P |

Was in town on business and fancied a good Indian close to my hotel. Early on a Monday night the place was empty - 2 other tables, which was surprising given how busy every restaurant was walking down to it. I'd also caveat this with the fact that I'm British, lived in London but now live in Austin, TX and still to have what I would consider a great curry in the US. Decided to try the onion bhaji to start which were ok, fairly dry and lacking much flavor. Then moved onto the Chicken Jalfrezi as a main. It was pretty good, fairly spicy (mild to me), but very heavy on the peppers & onions while lacking in sauce. Garlic naan bread was probably the best part. Disappointed that there was a $5 charge for mango chutney - thought that was a little steep and they didn't have any bottled Indian beer which I though was strange. My bill came to $74 (including tip) which seemed steep even though I had 2 glasses of average Malbec.

Terrific Indian Food

By MTBFAM |

We went to check out the famed Indian restaurant row on East 6th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues for an early dinner while in the city over the weekend. Although charmed by this "only in New York" streetscape with a dozen or so Indian restaurants at or below street level in the townhouses along the block, we opted for the more upscale (and clean looking) Brick Lane Curry House at its new location right on 2nd Avenue (just off E. 6th). The front doors were wide open on a beautiful afternoon and from the outside the place looked very chic and full of good energy. Inside, the decor is very nice, and we learned that it had only recently opened at this location. The place was just opening and the staff trickling in when we got there, so the manager seated us at one of the wooden booths along the wall across from the bar. The drink menu was brought out and I couldn't resist a 16 ounce Sam Adams Octoberfest for $4. That was awesome. The food menu boasts of a super spicy Phaal dish, which I soon learned was the subject of a Man vs. Food episode and is offered up as a challenge by the restaurant to those willing to brave the heat. We passed. For an appetizer, we ordered Aloo Chaat, a potato salad-like hodgepodge topped with yogurt, tamarind, and mint sauce. For an entree, I ordered Lamb Bhuna, which the manager said would remind me of Lamb Rogan Josh, one of my favorite Indian dishes. My wife ordered vegetable Jalfrezi, and we got an order of naan. For some reason, perhaps because we were the first and only diners at the time, all of our dishes were brought out together, so the Aloo Chaat acted more as a side for us than an appetizer. Nonetheless, we tried it first, and to our surprise, it was a cold dish. It was, however, sweet, savory, and bursting with flavor. It was so good and refreshing that we kept picking at it throughout our meal and even after we had finished everything else. The Lamb Bhuna was indeed like the Rogan Josh I've had before, rich and flavorful sauce over tender cubes of lamb, and the Vegetable Jalfrezi was as good as in any other Indian restaurant we've tried. Although we could've used a slight bit more heat, we simply love the flavors, textures, and spices of Indian food, and Brick Lane is a great find for us. We'll definitely return.

Man versus Food

By loulou79692014 |

I booked this restaurant for my nephew to do the man versus food challenge as featured on the TV program. He declined the challenge!!! The food we had here was lovely. I had the shrimp tikka masala whilst my nephew had chicken korma. Waiters were very attentive and food arrived in record times. Delicious.

Top curry

We popped in for the $12 set lunch. The place was very quite. Its a small place so book before you go. I had a beer, kingfisher, top beer. Service good, food excellent , well worth a visit.

Food was top notch, butter chicken, lamb sag and madras were all lovely, tender meat and tasty sauces. Ive been many indian restaurants in england and this is up there with the best. When i go back to NYC i will be going back.

Excellent Indian experience

By PaulSnood |

Enjoyed Brick Lane, probably the best of Indian restaurants lining that stretch of E 6th St in the East Village. Professional service, and nice ambience too. We love spicy but were warned off the famous "Phal"- but we ordered a side of the Phal sauce to try and YIKES! My vindaloo was quite hot enough thank you and very good.

Very Good Food, Tasty Dishes, and Accessible Prices

By sburgosc |

My wife and I went to Brick Lane because a good friend who lives in both Brooklyn and Manhattan recommended it to us. It was a pleasurable experience; we had the $9.99 lunch buffet and loved it. The food is tasty, the choices are diverse, the sauces are varied, and the curry was just fantastic. Highly recommended to anyone stopping at 23rd Street with the N or R train.

average in comparison

By ygNYC |

Brick Lane is just "okay" and considering it's directly across from some of the best Indian restaurants in NYC (Haveli, among others), that's not really good enough for me to go back.
