NYC Memorial Day Weekend

By Kevin T |

Delicious meal, great atmosphere nice service definitely a worthy NYC dinner. Pork dish was awesome! Skirt steak & lobster ravioli were yummy!

Two different lunch entrées two different results

By KJDbiz1 |

Mixed results on the lunch menu: my husband ordered the skirt steak with asparagus, which is really very good. I went with the chicken stew with saffron rice and plantains it sounded good and it was a special so I went with it. Consisted of drumstick and a wing in a stew with potatoes, carrots grilled plantains on the side I ended up eating carrots and and potatoes and really not touching much else. We were the only people in the restaurant at about 1:30 in the afternoon. Nice people pretty relaxed service albeit quite sluggish given we were the only ones there… small stylish place. Probably won’t go back when you’re in the city for a few days at a time.

Delightful anniversary dinner

By sunnydays007 |

We started with the guacamole which was delicious and I'm hard to please because I make my own. That was a lovely surprise to start. We also tried the tamale stuffed with crab and shrimp-also delectable. The specialty drinks are a treat. The Rosemary sidecar, Bee's Knees and Hell's kitchen mule were delightful on the taste buds. For dinner I ordered their "Osobucco" and my husband had Calamai ink linguini. My dish was sublime and huge portions too. Although it wasn't the true Osso buco I'm used to...no small pieces with marrow to dine on (my fav part) it was an amazing dish. Our server was very apologetic when I questioned why they called it Osso buco so he brought us a round of free drinks!! Nice touch. I wasn't complaining because it was delicious, just curious so we were delighted to be treated so well. My husband, a very picky pasta eater, was equally pleased with his dish. We will most certainly return. The manager even moved us from our original table because I was so cold and it was freezing outside. Every time they opened the door, I got a chill so he made sure we were comfortable. It was a perfect experience.

Restaurant overcharges: shows one price on menu but charges a higher price

By 6mytravel |

They overcharged. The menu shows one price, but when the bill comes, the price for the same item on the bill is higher. This occurred with multiple items. This is really unacceptable. Their food is very good and for the quality, the prices charged are not unreasonable, but this kind of shady, cheating (maybe illegal?) behavior is unacceptable and ruins the dining experience.

A small place with big, bold food and drinks

By lois l |

We met up with friends for an early dinner before going to a show. Buena Vista was new to all four of us and we left delighted with our meals, drinks and service. That’s a great combo! We began with appetizers - the calamari was so tender and flavorful! We also sampled the grilled artichoke hearts with manchego cheese and roasted peppers and asparagus spears-delectable! We couldn’t wait to see the main courses. I had the house specialty pork osso bucco that came with some minced vegetables and roasted potatoes. The meat fell off the bone and was a blend of spices with a hint of heat. So good! Friends has the sea bass, baked salmon and linguine with shrimp cooked in black squid ink. There was a lotta love in those dishes, as each one was pronounced incredibly delicious. All were artfully presented. The dessert menu is a nice array—don’t leave without trying the cinco leches- five milks custard. It was amazing! We will definitely go back next time in the city.

Very tasty

By ilovescones |

Beautiful cozy nook with great Cuban cuisine. Up to date interior; good variety on the menu. Stand outs for us were artichokes and asparagus with man he go - grilled perfectly. Pork osso buco did not have a lot to do with osso buco other than having a bone, but that takes nothing away from the quality of the dish, which was fantastic. Side plate of roast asparagus was executed perfectly. 3 milk cake for dessert was excellent. What a great find. Service was very attentive, and our meal was not rushed.

A true gem! Fantastic on many levels.

By Cassandra D |

An absolute GEM. The food, cocktails, and service were all fantastic. Dishes are creative; my duck entrée blended a variety of flavors and ingredients and was absolutely delicious. Red sangria was a perfect complement to both our dishes. Apps/small plates offer a great option for those who don't necessarily want a full entree. The owner's graciousness and enthusiasm, along with our attentive server, made the entire experience wonderful. Whether you were a couple on a date or a group of friends looking for a great dinner experience, this place is a winner. HIGHLY recommend!

Delicious latin food

By rosa maria L |

We were a group of six adults who had a great dinner in this quaint restaurant. Well managed with service and food! It was a pleasant surprise at how Delicious the food was. We ordered several different items and all of us were very happy with our dinner. A selection of ceviche, guacamole, blue peruvian potatoes with shredder oxtail as our appetizers. Main plates were the iberian pork osobuco and the argentinian skirt steak. Dessert was also delicious, tres leches and churros ! In addition to our delicious meal, it’s a great value! Do go dine there, you’re going to have a great dinner!

A hidden gem in New York

By Kjell E |

Arrived without a booking. A 30 minute walk and wait and the problem was solved. On the meny I think our course was named «rice» (Should be changed) We ended up with the very best paella I have ever tasted. Will definately be back for more very shortly. The restaurant is small, a bit noisy, bur very relaxing. A small issue with a sold out wine was solved perfectly by the owner. This is a place you should go now before it gets famous and difficult to get a table. Thanks a lot to everybody at BuenaVista for unforgetable food. Looking forward to see you again very soon.

A great meal!

By ianshamshey |

I had passed by on the way to work to look over the menu but could not stop and eat at that time. I met Richard outside who was answering questions about the menu. I returned a few days later when I had the time to eat and because he recognized me, I was seated at a small table instead of at the bar which I always find to be more comfortable. Water arrived with a nice tomato olive oil dipping sauce and some bread. It is a small long space but has seating in the back which faces an open kitchen-this is great if you are with a group and prefer a more customized menu. After getting settled, I decided on the Oslo buco which was Iberian pork over a bed of oven roasted potatoes and spinach with green apple radish au jus. It was very good. I reserved some bread and the dipping sauce for the end. After eating, I wanted a cup of espresso but being they had only recently opened, their machine had yet to arrive. It is pricey but it was an excellent meal and service and I would recommend and return.

The Absolute Worse

By Peyton J |

We went by all these rave reviews and decided to try this restaurant for my birthday. My sister enjoyed her meal but I lived to regret mine. First impressions - the glass on the door was dirty. The salt shaker was dirty. The pepper grinder didn't work. I didn't dare try to bathroom if they couldn't handle that. I should have taken the negative review about the paella as a hint but decided to go with the waitress's suggestion - Squid Ink Linguini with Seafood. The service was slow and there were hardly any people there but our meals came out pretty fast. My dish did not come out like the photo in yelp ...a ball of linguini with a pink sauce circle. It came out plated like I did it myself. The pasta was old and stuck together. I couldn't believe it. The seafood was old, real old. So I guess if you are a meat eater, you'll be fine here but I'll never go there again. Happy Birthday, not.

Nice surprise at hello kitchen.

By Fabrice D |

Excellent food. Latin American dish that we all loved. The staff is very welcoming and do everything to make the moment very pleasant.

A Little Gem on 9th

By Henning Kristiansen |

Sandra found this little gem on 9th Ave. with just 6 or 7 tables. But don’t let the small foot print deceive you, here you get a full dinner experience. Thanks to the top customer service by Richard and Ronny our dinner was very enjoyable. I had pork loin roll-ups stuffed with greens on a bed of seasoned mashed potatoes. A pleasant twist was the jalapeño infused mushroom sauce which worked surprisingly well.

The steak was to die for

By zed |

This place is small, but the food is spectacular, this restaurant was recommended by our concierge and it didn’t disappoint, although the prices was a little more than the other restaurant that we have visited, about $48 for a steak, the taste was superb, probably one of the best steaks that we’ve had for awhile. The waitress/waiters were friendly, but not overbearing a beautiful place, so much so we went twice.

Excellent

By Carol K |

When we first entered the restaurant I thought I was going to be disappointed. It was very small and when we were seated , we were taken into the back room where there were two tables in front of the kitchen. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Our wait staff, Ryan and Starling were friendly and attentive. The food was incredibly delicious. The guacamole was excellent and the steak so tender it melted in my mouth. I Highly recommend this restaurant!

Great food, great atmosphere

By eyalmenachem |

I found this restaurant close to my hotel so decided to give it a try. Very happy that I did. I ordered the Grilled Argentine skirt steak with fried cassava and Bariloche chimichurri. It was very good. Before the dish came they gave me some bread with a very tasty and spicy gravy.

Charming Staff, Decent Food

By Arlington7175 |

As a few others have stated, do not be put off by the entrance. For what it lacks in store front, it is made up by a very friendly and accommodating staff. This was a last minute selection because I bought a theater ticket at the last minute and needed an early seating and I liked the other Yelp reviews. With the staff's help, I selected the grilled octopus and the ossobuco. The octopus was fine, but it was just a tad too oily to distract. However, the osso buco was very tender and the serving was massive. It was tasty, and I believe as advertised for the overall theme of the restaurant very much comfort food. I also had a class of of temperanillo (pulpo a la parrilla). I believe overall the food and wine were fairly priced for the neighborhood considering price and quality. For the starter, entree, wine, tax, and tip, I paid $66. From a value perspective, it wasn't a steal, but it certainly wasnt a rip off given all of the abominations going on at Time Square just a few blocks away : - ). If you would like to try something different and a little authentic, give it a try. Service is definitely attentive for NYC standards. I waivered between 3 and 4 stars. Since I was so charmed by the staff I nudge it up to 4.

Cozy and friendly.

By zfamilyvacations |

Wow. We loved our meal and everything about this little gem. Starting with the cocktails, they were outstanding! Like the best we’ve had this trip to NYC. For appetizers, we highly recommend Hanger Cured Pork Tenderloin and Manchego,; the Cuban Tamal; and the scallops (special). The entire wait staff was attentive and friendly, making it feel like a cozy family restaurant. Afterwards it was a 10 min four block walk to the theater. Thank you Elvis for a great meal!

True Latin

By Steven T |

What a hidden gem! Our hotel bartender recommended this spot and it turned out to be the best food all weekend. We were all looking for a local spot with authentic Latin food. Well we found it hear. Everything was amazing including the service. It isn’t a big place but they accommodated our Rez for 5 with no problem. Octopus, Osso Buco, Branzino, chef special vegetarian pasta !! If you want true Latin cuisine and one of the best meals while you visit NYC, stop in.

Good place

By MLoor |

The place is small adorned with pictures of different Latin American figures and places. The place is pricey. The portions were good with great presentation. The paella lacked flavor although it had lots of seafood. The steak was cooked to perfection. The ceviche comes with plantain chips that are an additional charge. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive. On a negative note we were offered sparkling or still water; no tap. Although I don’t mind paying for a good meal I don’t see a point in paying $22 for two bottles of still water.

Great place, food and people!

By cervela |

Superb evening! Great food from starter to main, very topical and not only the common dishes. The oxtail is worth a try! Staff is very nice and knowledgeable. Special thanks to the bar tender, the lady doing mixology is a star!

Skirt steak to die for!

By MarkHinCabinJohn |

I came here while on the South Beach diet, and ordered the Skirt Steak with chimichurri sauce. OMG it melted in my mouth. It looked huge but was gone before I knew it. They subbed sautéd spinach for cassava at my request. Great friendly service, terrific food. Small place with Latin music playing at just the right volume. Will return next time I’m in nyc!

An unforgettable steak in Manhattan

By Raffaella |

During a family vacation in Manhattan, we had dinner at this really excellent steak house. The steak was just perfect: tender, tasty and cooked to the right point. Impeccable Service and Warm Welcoming made the evening even more enjoyable. Also to be commended is the extensive and well-stocked wine list, with selected labels that perfectly match the meat and other dishes on offer. The restaurant is sober, elegant and very welcoming, ideal for both families and couples. An experience that we highly recommend to those who visit New York and love quality meat combined with good wines!

Wonderful flavor, quaint atmosphere and high class dining

By Courtney |

We went here for a nice dinner prior to attending a broadway show. The restaurant is very small but tastefully decorated. They can have approximately 24 customers maximum - and I counted 8 staff - so the customer service is very on point. They have original and delicious cocktails. The food was pricey but definitely worth it. We enjoyed everything immensely. The pork orsso fell off the bone and all the vegetables were immaculately flavored. My mother had a steak and she loved it. The flavors were delicious. We also had a grilled artichoke appetizer - amazing flavor experience. They also make sangria in house and have fresh bread and tapos. I would highly recommend a dinner here. I would not recommend this as budget food or for families with young kids. You know your families best but this is a high class dining experience and it is priced accordingly.

Great meal and service

By bluejeanfood |

Had seared baby calamari over roasted spicy potato with artisanal magic Jerez, seared octopus, stuffed clam with scallops, shrimp, and mussels, creamy lobster stew soup and green asparagus with favas and chantille foam on top, and roasted Iberian pork Osobuco, over scalloped ovened potatoes and spinach served with green apple radish aujus. Really just an amazing meal and service was first class. Highly recommend a visit here.

Delicious, creative cuisine

By IrinaR |

This place is a real gem. Went there for dinner, pre show at the Garden. Delicious food and drinks. All very creative and beautifully presented. Husband had pork osso bucco and loved it, but my duck with apples and blueberries was truly spectacular. Grilled octopus was done to perfection.we tried three different drinks and loved all. They do not skimp on the alcohol. Prices are surprisingly low for the area. The place is small and I would suggest reservation. Very attentive staff. Would definitely come there again.

Gorgeous Food

By Lexidove |

Gorgeous food and great service. We just popped in for appetisers after travelling all day. The service was speedy and the food was delicious. We had the hanger tenderloins which were like three sliders with no bread. Super tasty and my kind of food. My husband had quinoa and goats cheese salad. Needed a few more leaves and goats cheese for me but he loved it. $50 + tip inc 2 x beers and a coke

Little place, great food!

By Chrisimon |

Little restaurant, but great service and food. We were looking for a South American restaurant and went to Buena Vista. We were not disappointed! The food was great at the service attentive. Will be back!

Birthday

By Jackie P |

Went for my husband 60th birthday. Elvis ,Stephen and Donny made it so special great food and very welcoming staff. Excellent service and food.

Wonderful experience

By Dilmun |

We were at a Hotel in Times Square. Our walk was about 15 min and well worth it. Our starter was seared baby calamari which was excellent. My wife had a chicken dish that was good. I had the Chilean Sea Bass that was good too. My flan was a little too sweet for my taste though. Followed through with a glass of Coquito. All in all a lovely experience. We would visit again.

You better have extra time and limited expectations

By MickieBowe |

We were referred to this place by the hotel concierge. When we arrive there was one other family in the restaurant. We ordered off the regular menu and decided not to do the brunch prefix. I made a slight addition to my omelette, which the waiter didn't know if they could do or not. My daughter ordered banana pancakes. After sitting for more than 30 minutes I enquired how much longer we were going to have to wait. They brought out my daughter's pancakes, which were cold and I waited another five minutes for my omelette. We also ordered guacamole, which had kind of a sour taste to it but huge kudos to the freshly made chips. Let's just say the food was mediocre at best, the service was slow and the waiter didn't really seem like he knew what was happening. The owner/manager was on site, but never made rounds on the two tables that were in his establishment. Would not make this as stop ever again.

Excellent service and food

Excellent perfect intimate 💯 wonderful attention from Camilla, delicious food and unparalleled service, an unparalleled place to enjoy a good dinner

Good service but ok food

By Jackman |

Service was great here, we took our bottle of wi e which they happily accepted, food was ok, I was a little disappointed on this front, the desserts were quite poor we left most of them, please improve your rice pudding. Overall good but not great.

Great restaurant in Hells Kitchen

By Cathy S |

We were told at our hotel to try this restaurant. Cuban food was delicious. I ordred the chicken with tequilla sauce and it was delicious. My husband got the sauteed skirt steak and it was also delicious.

Had take-out (Covid)

By ImmigrantPunk |

Problems phoning in the order (her strong accent and my strong accent didn't work very well). Got there 5 minutes before they had said it would be ready but they apologised it wasn't ready, entirely our fault. The fish stew was very good, the ossobucco excellent.

Great food

By Kathleen S |

The BuenaVista Restaurant & Bar was.....interesting. The food was excellent. My dining companion and I shared 3 hot appetizers, 1 cold appetizer & a dessert. It was more than enough food for us in a “tapas” style. All of the hot apps were terrific- we especially liked the Cuban tamale filled with crab meat and the chicken empanada. The wine by the glass was very reasonably priced and my Tempranillo was excellent. The service, was odd. We felt like everyone working there was very anxious and they wanted to turn the table quickly, even though there were plenty of tables and no wait. It’s in an odd location, and is subtly tucked in between two garish places. I actually walked right past it twice! I would definitely return, and recommend the food highly.

Rude service and poor quality food

By Mary Rae Johnson |

Our waiter showed us to our table. Barely spoke to us. Was rude when questions were asked. My chicken Milanese was very dry. We ate quickly, just wanting to leave a hostile environment. As we left we realized he hadn’t followed COVID protocol. He never asked for IDs or vaccination proof. I’ve never been treated so rudely in my life. I will never return to this restaurant.

This restaurant is exquisite!

By 1_Mihaela_1 |

This restaurant is exquisite! It will be on my ‘to do list’ every time I will be revisiting New York City! My mouth gets watery just thinking about the extraordinary seafood soup & the best ox tail I have ever had!! My friend and I, also delightefully praised the Octopus entree & the roasted Iberian pork Osobuco! Starlin & his team took pride in providing us with an extraordinary table service. We were so vividly impressed with our choice of dining this past Saturday evening, that we were even introduced to the “big chef”, -whom we saw behind the kitchen counter adding a touch of his hearty dedication to each & every order plate-. I give this restaurant a million stars for ambiance, tasty/one of-a-kind menu, service & Caribbean choice of background music. Mihaela :)

Good food, but it comes with a warning

By Ric |

This place is extremely narrow and small. I had a reservation and arrived on time. But they had no place to seat me in the main dining room. So, I was stuck in some obscure little alcove near the kitchen. Although the server staff had to pass this alcove to get food and deliver it to the main room, it was difficult to get attention and any service myself. Once I finally got served, the food was delicious and had great flavor combinations. I was also surprised that they charged for refills on soda; but hey, it's NYC and maybe that's common. I suggest trying this place, but DO NOT let them seat you anywhere but in the main dining room.

Cozy Creative Convivial

By casaraton |

BuenaVista was a great spot for dinner not just for the fantastic food (cuban tamal and Iberian pork), pleasant drink (Smoke Tree unoaked Chardonnay), and the warm service, but also for the hilarious showmanship touches (fire!) and the camaraderie created among all by consuming the amazing shots (mamajuana!).

Disappointed by a second visit

By Joe M |

A more recent visit was disappointing, I'm sorry to report. We were there during what I thought was happy hour, but the menu made no mention of it. Our dinner cost more than twice as much as the last time, and wasn't quite as good, nor was the service anything special.

Awesome find!

By darcytdog |

Found the BuenaVista strictly by chance and were blown away by the quality of food and service. We were there for lunch and would certainly have gone back for dinner if schedule allowed. Highly recommended!

Amazing food, a Gem in Hell's Kitchen NY.

By Freddy D |

The food is simply amazing! Your taste buds will love you. The service was great from the hostess to our waiter. The place has a great ambiance and great wine selection. It's a must try if you are in NYC.

Wonderful neighborhood find

By Samuel G |

A really terrific find. The food is beautifully seasoned and presented well. Service is professional and knowledgeable. It is intimate, relatively quiet, and a place that lets you relax and forget the chaos of the city. Highly recommend.

Get your act together!

By JMINYC |

I realize that times are bad with the pandemic still affecting New York, but honestly, if a restaurant wants to make business now, they have to get their act together! First of all, the host did not know the price of the prix-fix brunch on Sunday. Come on, really? The drinks offered with the brunch were, as I told the waiter, "Undrinkable". The sangria was neither wine, nor sangria. We were told it came out of a pre-prepared bottle. It had no taste. We were brought mimosas instead. The orange juice tasted like canned orange juice. Horrible!!!! The meal was passable, but only that. I asked what Cuban rice was for them. Not Cuban rice! It was a blob of yellow rice, and the only taste was the coloring that made the rice orange. The meat was ok. The veggies dry. After being locked up for months, I was looking forward to my first meal out, and this was a huge disappointment. I see other reviews are good. I am very surprised. This was definitely not a good meal! The waiter, who was new, was very nice. That was about the only positive thing I can say about this place. I am sorry to give such a bad review at this time, but we are all having a bad time, and going out for a nice meal would have been pleasant. This was NOT!

After The show

By Catherine B |

We were in NYC to see a Broadway show and googled to find a restaurant near by. What a lucky find! The food was fresh, delicious, and well presented. I had the grilled octopus app and the Bronzino special. My husband had the Osso bucco. The service was very good ( we ate early and were the only people in the restaurant at the time). The space is small.

Great for Adults, Less so for kids

By Bigamus |

Food here was interesting and flavorful. The staff was eager and helpful, but it's going through the normal start up issues. The Grilled Octopus was cooked perfectly. Definitely worth the visit.

A real gem

By YankeeDave |

My wife and I stayed at the Hyatt around the corner. We went for dinner on a Sunday night. This block of 9th Ave. is a real mixed bag, with a Hell's Kitchen combo of grocery stores, dive bars, and people of all types. Maybe not the kind of place you'd expect to find a great restaurant, but that's what we found. BuenaVista has a narrow storefront, it would easy to walk by without noticing, and the interior is unremarkable, with a narrow dining area near the front, where we were seated. It was not unattractive, just nothing special. But from there, things went way up. Our waiter was very helpful, friendly but not instrusive. And the food was terrific. We shared a Mexican Guacamole appetizer, and I had a pork osobuco. My wife had sea bass over pumpkin quenelles. All were beautifully presented, as shown in the photos. My pork dish was given a quick torching by our server, to enhance the crust. I don't know how much good that does, but it didn't hurt and it was fun. Presentation doesn't count for much if the food doesn't match up, but that was not an issue here. My pork was fork tender and tasty, with a blend of flavors that enhanced but did not overpower the meat. My wife enjoyed her sea bass, and we loved the housemade guac. I'm not sure when we'll be back in the City, but I'd love to return to BuenaVista.

Hard pass! Go elsewhere.

NOTHING at all comparable to the 3-5 star reviews I came across on Yelp. Service was far from "exceptional". For one they DO NOT advertise ANYWHERE-not on the door, menu or even their website that they automatically charge a 20% tip, listed as large party... we were 3. Myself & my 2 daughters. That was beyond Infuriating considering my server as well as the manager were too consumed entertaining a young lady that sat next to us. They came around merely to take our order, drop off our food & drinks without a single concern about our dining needs/experience. I had to ask. for my check 2 times because again my server was too busy making small talk with the female seated next to us. Needless to say I demanded that tip be removed. I went from considering a 15% tip for the poor, to next to no service, to nothing. How dare you automatically dictate a 20% tip with NO effort & no notice of that ANYWHERE. Not on your website, not on Yelp where I made the reservation & certainly not on the menu. Not until I finally saw the check on their handheld device- not even a print out was given to me to review. I disputed & refused the 20% only to see my credit card was STILL charged that amount & not the pre fee amount I signed off on. Otherwise, the food was salty & unimpressionable. Between the duck, not so grilled octopus & black ink pasta with merely 2 shrimp & 2 scallops - our meals were nothing memorable. Had they bothered to come over & ask how we were doing they'd know. A total tourist trap! The front end staff were all too consumed messing with the lighting in an attempt to dim for some sort of ambiance & scrolling through various Spanish songs to find the right vibe. Clearly no one has their act together. The place is very small-nothing intimate about it. Seating is tight & uncomfortable. Their focus is on anything else but their customers or quality of what they're serving. I don't know if I was more insulted by the automatic 20% tip they felt privileged to or that I left there feeling like a tourist having been taken for an un earned $40 tip...and I'm from Jersey!!! Besides they're already over priced menu they easily add insult with their less than mediocre service & scam of leading you to believe they removed the 20% only to see otherwise

Amazing food

Heaven in Hell’s Kitchen

By herb12345 |

Fabulous Latin food and drink in a small location. I’m not a sea bass fan, but I admit the sea bass ceviche was terrific. Pork Osso Buco was meaty, tender and had tremendous flavor...we’ve enjoyed a good meal at this restaurant several times but this may have been the best thing we ever had. Inspired cocktails all have an interesting zing of flavor. An easy walk makes BuenaVista perfect for pre-theater dinner (but give yourself plenty of time in case they’re busy...the kitchen is small), after theater, or just for fun any other time. Ryan’s service is phenomenal...and you’ll enjoy whatever he recommends.

so tasty!

By Brian J |

i went last night with a couple of friends and we tried a lot! 4 appetizers (ceviche, chicken puffs, octopus and a pork thing), then we shared three entrees (branzino special, seafood casserole special and skirt steak). we LOVED everything every for the pork appetizer. next time, I'm going to start with the ceviche (absolutely amazing) and i want to try the pork ossobuco. oh! and the basil/guava margaritas.... delicious!

Nice people and good food

By Pittsburgh_cyclist |

Nice people and good food Thanks to COVID-19, we ordered takeout food. The meal came nicely packaged, portions were very generous and the food was really good. Seafood stew had lots of fish in a nice broth, but the is so bucolic was spectacular. Id love to come back in normal times and enjoy a meal at this excellent, unpretentious restaurant.

Good food

By Alan D |

We came across this establishment on OpenTable. It is located in the hell’s kitchen area of New York City. It’s not a very large restaurant but has a more intimate environment. It is apparently a newer establishment recently opened buy an award-winning chef. I recommend the osobuco.

Fantastic meal, Go for the food, not the ambience.

By Scott F |

The food was delicious. Impeccable presentation and fresh ingredients. Nightly specials, and a wide selection of regular items on the menu including fish, lamb, steak, chicken, pasta, soups, salads. You will have a quality meal here. The chef and kitchen are doing quality work. The desserts sounded amazing too, but we were too full from our appetizers and entrees to try one. The only odd thing is that you would never expect such good food in this neighborhood, or in this zero ambience restaurant. The staff is very nice, but the place looks like it was put together by a college kid who grew up in a coffee shop. But the food is so thoughtful and yummy, that it doesn't matter that the ambience is non-existent. The young violin player providing music on a Friday night (over the piped-in music) was an odd but welcome touch in this tiny restaurant.

Incredible Food, Superb Service

By Mariamitz |

You absolutely have to go to this amazing restaurant. The food is incredibly delicious only to be followed by the superb, personal service. We started with the octopus special which melted in your mouth. The yucca fries where done to perfection. The crusty bread and amazing olive/olive oil dipping sauce brought a smile to our tastebuds. You must order the skirt steak with 2 sauces on the side. We have eaten skirt steak at many retaurants, but BuenaVista is the absolute BEST...so tender and done exactly the way you want it. The avocado salad was quite large with a delicious dressing. The flavors in all the sauces, or dressings are one of a kind with beautiful presentations for all dishes. Full bar and great wine selections. Extremely attentive waiters and cater customer. Fabulous place!

Absolutely superb

By judy s |

What a find. The chef is a very talented, imaginative chef. One can tell he has trained with the very best . The quality of the food, the presentation, creativity and not least the taste was beyond our expectations. We had great cocktails to start. Mine was orange blossom ketel with Cointreau. So delicious i ordered another! It was so much better than the cocktail i had the night before at a restaurant twice as expensive. Then several appetizers, starters. The salmon with caviar on toast, sea bass ceviche, guacamolewith plantain chips, every one was incredible. I ordered the duck which was among the best duck dishes I've ever had and I order it a lot! As a special there was tiramisu for dessert, delicious and tres Leche, which is usually on the menu. I really wxanted to try the entire menu. The staff was very helpful and nice and gave good suggestions. The restaurant itself is very simple, about 8 tables, an outside space, nice photos on the walls, but definitely not fancy. I'd much prefer this great food to fancy decor! We will definitely return.

Six out of Five!

By Herts1234 |

It was by good luck that we came upon the Buena Vista. This is a lovely intimate restaurant, with excellent food and service and reasonably priced cocktails. Trying the food was a bit of a new experience to our taste buds but we were not disappointed at all! We had the Peruvian Blue potatoes for starters (shared), and they kindly set the fabulous hot sauce on the side for us. For the mains we had the pork dishes, the seared pork with apple and lingon berries was fabulous and quite sweet, the other one was not sweet but still delicious. The desert of the Flan de Leche was lovely as well and had to be shared following the previous two courses. The presentation of the food was really good as can be seen from the photos. The service was excellent and not obtrusive, but friendly and the restaurant is nicely decorated with dramatic photos of South America.

If you’re in Hell’s Kitchen a must.

I’ll keep it short, know that you can see that They get great reviews (rightfully so) From the cocktails to desserts was Top notch . Google has them $50-100 But the main dishes were $30-45 some lower. We had Argentinian flat steak, Pork Chop and the Salmon dinner. The banana cake with ice cream was like a hot bread pudding. And even the coffee was Amazing.

TOTALLY AMAZING FOOD AND SERVICE!

By LazloNashville |

I rarely give 5 stars to restaurants, but this restaurant deserves it! The service was fantastic. The food is over the top delicious, a foodies' paradise. I had the grilled octopus appetizer and the osso buco entree and I was beyond thrilled. Best I've ever had. The portions are large too, which is always nice. Something special and extraordinary is happening in that kitchen. I will return!

Overpriced. Poor quality. Disrespectful. Avoid.

Terrible experience. Subpar food. Overpriced whole in the wall with terrible management. And from what I could see around our section, multiple complaints reassured our experience was not an outlier. Now to explain… Had reservations but kept seeing people we knew didn’t get seated ahead. When we finally were seated 30 minutes later, it was next to the kitchen. The only thing separating us was a small bookshelf which I guess was insightful as I heard them talking about clients throughout our dinner. I guess they didn’t think I would understand? Regardless, it took an hour to receive our overcooked appetizer. There is no regard for food allergies because we specifically stated there was a severe tomato allergy and asked caution for cross contamination. When we ordered our appetizer we asked if it had tomatoes which they denied. I asked once again for confirmation because the oxtail used is often prepared with tomatoes. When the waiter asked the cook I could literally hear them disparaging us in Spanish. We ate our appetizer and asked about the status of our entrees (it’d been well over an hour). The manager came by and asked what was wrong and what can he could do to resolve our complaints. Not in a manner that was sincere rather with annoyance. I explained that our son was hungry and we just wanted to know the statuts of the food so he said he would check the kitchen and get it rushed if needed- so again there were more sarcastic comments about us heard from the kitchen. During this time another couple sent their food back because it was raw(and yes there were comments about them as well). Finally the entrees arrived and they were completely wrong. And from what I could see, unappealing. That was the moment we got up and said we were done. There was another large group that looked at us as if they were contemplating the same course of action because they’d been waiting even longer. When I stood up, there was no apology or desire to make things right- just attitude and the bill. Of course by the time my wife stepped outside of the restaurant she was itching and covered in hives so the food had tomatoes or something that touched did. The food we had was subpar, the dishes that came out(I had a view of the kitchen) did not match the description, and were overpriced for what they were. NY has too many options that are better to put up with this.

Tiny space - outsize taste.

By Lori G |

tiny space but outsize taste - had dinner with friends after a Bwy show. 15 tables max. Good service. Had a great cocktail before dinner. All entrees came out as requested. One thing- very light on the sides. Duck over spinach barely had any greens. Opt for SLA Carter sides to complete your meal. Would go back.

Late lunch on Friday afternoon

This was the first time my friend and I ate at this restaurant. We were looking for a relaxing place for lunch to enjoy good food and catch up. BuenaVista was aesthetically pleasing and the host and wait staff were very pleasant. My meal, Sautéed Skirt Steak, was delicious and my friend had compliments for his meal also . I have already recommended this restaurant to a few people since my visit and I will return for dinner.

Superb service and delicious cocktails

By Adeola A S |

Our waiter Ryan met us whilst we looked at the menu and he was absolutely superb at taking care of us. The drinks were delicious and served with bread and their special sauce which were full of flavour. The atmosphere was cosy with candles and brick walls. My sister and I absolutely loved it! Definitely would recommend to anyone looking for flavourful food, delicious food and excellent service.

Very Pleasant Surprise

We had 7 for dinner. Fist off the restaurant was very accommodating and allowed us to move reservation on hour later. The service was great, food was amazing-everything from the appetizers to the main courses was just excellent. I could also not get enough of the warm bread and the tapenade was very tasty (olive oil, sundried tomatoes, green olives, black olives and capers). Everybody had a great time and we enjoyed the atmosphere where there seemed to be regulars who know about this little gem

Memorable for all the wrong reasons

By DrFili |

Despite reserving over 2 weeks in advance, we turned up to be told the restaurant had overbooked, so we would be seated in the outdoor area. Fortunately it was unseasonably warm for December, but even with the heat lamps and our coats on it was a little nippy. You had to cross a cycle lane to get to the seating area – essentially we were sat in a wooden box in the middle of traffic, which wasn’t quite the atmosphere we were hoping for. Two other tables were later also seated outside with us, despite also having reservations for inside the building. One of those groups was so cold that they threatened to leave, after which room was made for all of us to sit inside after all. But we’d read the rave reviews, so we thought the food would make up for this rather odd welcome. Sadly not. My partner was told his first choice of starter was not available, and then halfway through eating his second choice (tuna brosquette) was told there’d been a mix-up and his first choice was available after all – what we were meant to do with this information was unclear, but it hilariously added to the sense of incompetence we were picking up. Unfortunately the starter he did eat was not great, with overdone tuna. My starter (cuban tamal) was tasty, but my main course was not – the pork chop was very dry. My partner’s skirt steak entree was good, though did not surpass one he once had in a Spoons in North Sheffield (which to be fair, was much better than normal Spoons quality). The highlight of the main courses was when the server set our herbs on fire with a blowtorch to ‘release the aromatics’, which created some impressively large flames (and unfortunately for the table next to us, quite a lot of smoke). The wine was very good, and the servers and host were all lovely. But that didn’t come close to making up for the fact that this was by far the worst meal we had during our trip to Manhattan. If you want a good story to tell your friends, come here – if you want good food and a good atmosphere, go somewhere else.

Great food bad service

By JARBoston |

Excellent food , lousy service. Why is a restaurant with such good food employing waiters that have no clue about their profession? Waitress hardly speaks any English and opens a bottle of wine without offering to taste it ... she has no clue about the menu and can’t explain it . Still recommend the restaurant as the food is great and place is nice . Just be patient with the service ....

DELICIOUS FOR DINNER and if you have to wait, don't worry, the EXCELLENT service and incredible drinks are worth it.

By eder95 |

Excellent place to have lunch or dinner and enjoy a wide variety of foods prepared with the highest quality and unmatched flavor. It is our second visit and sometimes the wait is worth it because the excellent service makes up for it. It is simply a guarantee to enjoy any dish that I have no way of describing, to choose a favorite and the delicious desserts with a spectacular presentation, as if that were not enough, some incredible drinks prepared by the great Fredic for a work or family toast will be the place ideal to be served by the best staff in Buenavista ALL excellent service I guarantee, and yes, with attention in Spanish if you wish uff… You simply cannot ask for more and do not hesitate to visit it I am sure you will love it as will my team , my family and of course for me the favorite place to dine on my next visit to NY. BUENAVISTA, SIMPLY CONGRATULATIONS!…See you soon.

Peruvian Delight!

By Zero Hour Fall Guy |

My daughter and I were looking for a restaurant to grab a quick meal one evening before a show at friends theater group - The Barrow Theater and one of the owners, my wife’s best friend Lee, suggested this restaurant as I had recently been back to Peru on one of my many trips there. This restaurant was superb!! It was a truly authentic Peruvian Restaurant and exceeded my expectations of finding authentic & delicious Peruvian food in NYC.

Outstanding!

By Joe M |

One more great review for this unassuming but outstanding restaurant. We stopped by during Happy Hour, enjoyed a couple of fine and low-priced Mojitos and Margheritas, and shared two amazing (and filling) tapas: an octopus special which was tender and tasty as could be, and the pork tenderloin, with Manchego, quail egg, fried plantain, etc--a remarkable and delicious dish. The server could not have been more charming or helpful. This was a fabulous dining experience, steps from the theater district, that cost less than $70 for the two of us.

Found a gem!

By efliegel |

We were staying at the Doubletree Hilton Times Square West and were looking for a place to eat and stumbled upon this restaurant. WHAT A GEM! The waiter Ryan was friendly, fun and attentive and the food was amazing (the octopus, the calamari, pasta and especially the ossobuco)! Definitely coming back!!!

Inventive cocktails and food

By Kathryn G |

This place is small, but not to be missed. The food is "Latin fusion" by the owner's description and it certainly is a mix of cultures. Everything was well-prepared. Service was great. When we were seated, we were asked if we were going to the theater so they knew how to pace our meal. We were not, so we told them to just take their time. Which they did - we were never rushed. Make sure you try one of their specialty coctails.

Great overall experience

Great menu and amazing food, staff were so friendly. We went the day before to confirm our reservation and stayed for a happy hour drink. We spent the time chatting to Starlin and the bar tender, she loves Scotland so lots to talk about. Starlin was an amazing host, so attentive and loved listening to where we had been to and taking notes where he could take his girlfriend. Would definitely recommend a visit

Great Latin American dining in Hell's Kitchen!

By andy a |

In NY for my Wife's 40th and walking round Hell's Kitchen looking for somewhere to eat. The food here is incredible, service fantastic and special thanks to Richard the host who made us feel very welcome and comfortable. Calmari great, pork great and my wife who is a vegetarian highly rated the vegetarian options. Impossible to fault the place. Big thumbs up from us!

Big flavor in a small space!

Had dinner here on Saturday and we really enjoyed the Octopus appetizer special. Big and SMOKY! Excellent "deconstructed paella" special as an entree (lots of shrimp and other shellfish) and the cod salad was also delicious. Good service, too.

Foodie destination

Caribbean Latin American foodie experience. Great service from Julian who made great recommendations. We had tuna and potato appetizers, wonderful, and main course of sea bass and duck, both were extremely good. We eat out a lot and are discriminating diners, this was a very good experience.

You MUST eat at this amazing restaurant!

By Blaine_B_NY |

The Buena Vista is an incredible gem located just off the beaten path, not too far from Times Square. I visited here with the family, including children aged 13 and 9. We all loved the service, the food, and the ambiance! This was by far our favorite restaurant and meal during our 3-day stay in NYC. We arrived around 5 PM on a Friday, and the service was perfect (hands-on but not over the top) the entire time. Every dish was superb, starting with the incredible grilled octopus, continuing with the melt-in-your-mouth ossobuco, and ending with a delicious dessert. Visting the Buena Vista for dinner will now be a constant component of our visits to NYC!

An unexpected delight

Quite by accident stumpled upon this relatively new edition to 9th ave. The octopus was as delicious as promised. The wait staff, super friendly and efficient. Can't wait to stop by again and check out Cuban sandwich
