We stayed at the New Yorker Hotel while in town for the Radio City Music Christmas Show. Since it was cold out we decided to eat at the Butcher and Banker. The menu prices online were comparable to nearby restaurants. The look of the place is great, very relaxing. The menu prices however were significantly different than what was online. If we had known, we would have gone elsewhere. It is NYC and it was in December so prices are going to be high but the steak for 2 online was $52. At the restaurant, $116, bit of a difference. My friend ordered a $52 steak and that is all he got, no salad, no sides, nothing. The rolls served before dinner were dry and somewhat tasteless. Would rather have had a salad. The shrimp scampi I had was very good.

We had a meeting here and only ordered appetizers and drinks, so can’t speak to the steak. Everything we had was beautifully prepared and it wasn’t your “same ole same ole” of appy offerings. The mini tacos are bite sized with about 9 to an order. Smokey and delicious. The garlic shrimp in the sliders could have been the protein on the slider if their own. Good sized and perfectly cooked. Calamari is not unique but done well for that item. Bacon is a must eat!

We went to B and B after seeing a Broadway show, and it was a fanciful, impressive end to the evening. The staff is very accommodating, and even from the front desk you will be impressed by the interiors. The polished vault door is an impressive centrepiece, balanced with iron gate separators and mass cluster chandeliers. The menu is extensive without being too much, and I think there's probably something for everyone to choose from. Red meat is the specialty of the house though, so a majority of your party who enjoys it would be a bonus. Be prepared to pay though; the service is kind and unpretentious but the bill is not :)

My wife ,son and I visited while on our holiday after a recommendation from a friend who also booked us in for my birthday , the free cocktails were nice touch and steaks were so good , I had the Oscar fillet and the blue crab was to die for . We did have a little problem with the order and to be honest 1 of the servers English seemed non excitent although we do all have thick northen English accents , brought the wrong drink and hadn't put sons steak on order , the manager is a good guy and problems easily fixed with a smile and understanding - i definitely look forward to visiting again on the future

I wouldnt go again, Great food and delicious drinks! But they add a gratuity on each check... I could understand if we were a huge party but we were a party of 4 people. so when we got the bill they added $76 dollars in gratuity and 33 in taxes. So a $140 meal turned into a $240 meal. Same for the other couple about $240 and total check was 490 bucks.. outrageous.. we had 2 orders of chicken a steak and a burger, brussel sprouts, 2 orders of mac n cheese and 3 drinks. Cool decor but never again.

Great experience in an actual old bank vault! The food was amazing and the service was excellent. Was a little pricey but well worth it.

This place has every potential to be great however it is far from it. If you want a less than mediocre meal with a NYC steakhouse price tag, this is your place. It’s like a person who acts like an aristocrat but lives in his mother’s basement. They served a frozen platter with ketchup (they didn’t have anything else). We asked for Tabasco and they brought a half empty greasy bottle that looked like it had been through a lot. The steaks were cooked incorrectly. The drinks were watered down and served with cheap alcohol despite asking for specific brands. After paying the check, they realized they didn’t tack on gratuity and came back with a new bill. In summary, we ended up fighting with the manager and getting street food. Nothing like a chicken and rice platter from a truck after leaving a grand in a restaurant.

My wife and I wanted to celebrate our last night in New York after our son's wedding and thought this looked like a fun experience and close to our hotel. At no time did our waiter show interest in us other than to give us a table. Took minutes to get water and after ordering our food and drinks he glanced our way several times but made no effort to connect. We finally had to ask the gentleman bussing the tables if he would take our menus off the table as it was quite small. He was very pleasant. After getting our meal (delivered by a waiter but not ours) we tried to get more water but again, our waiter had not checked in at all during the meal and I finally went and got our own bottle of water out of the cooler. The waiter made several visits to neighboring tables but not once to ours until I put the credit card on table top. He did ask if we wanted dessert as he picked up card which we declined. I will say, the food was excellent. Very good taste and hot! It should be noted that this is the first negative review I have ever done in 40 years of restaurant dining. Also, both my wife and I try to be very friendly and generous to all wait staff as all 5 of our children have worked in the food industry during their younger years. We typically learn the name of our server and often give an extra tip to bussers and servers who are pleasant. In 8 days in New York this was our only experience where staff wasn't polite and friendly. We left the restaurant with absolutely no acknowledgment from staff though we passed by several. With the high cost of the meals and poor service, I would suggest you try out any of the thousands of better options available within walking distance throughout New York.

One meat eater and one vegetarian (quite unusual) but wanted to eat in this unique setting as had popped in for cocktails a couple of days before. They looked after us really well. Food and service both excellent. Loved the carrots! Cocktails are fabulous. Highly recommended.

I chose this unique restaurant based on other reviews and how cool the atmosphere seemed. Being in The New Yorker Hotel was not the ideal setting because the hotel, although great in its heyday, is kind of drab. The restaurant setting is in the basement and is an actual bank vault which was very cool! Speakeasy type atmosphere. The bar was cozy and the drinks were great! We ate in the vault which I loved although someone in our party was really bothered by the floral material on the wall. I will add that It was an 8:45 reservation and there were only two other parties in the vault with us. Lean for NYC I would think. We had great service from Freddy, a charming talkative gentleman who had a lot of experience in the restaurant business and It showed! Great bread and appetizers! We shared a porterhouse which had a smoky flavor , different but good. Good sides too( asparagus and spinach). Too full for dessert. The reason for 3/5 is due to the ending. We paid in cash and gave Freddy a 20% tip that included a bottle of wine in the final check( normally don’t tip on the wine, but did this time). Freddy took the check opened It up within our view. Audibly said “ meh” and walked away. Pretty rude and insulting. I had liked the guy prior, but this was not the move! Take It in back, say meh in the back but NOT in front of the customer. Totally took our nice experience and soured It.

Great spot for an amazing meal. They created a cool atmosphere utilizing the old bank vault very well. The custom drinks were spot on and the food was fantastic. High quality steaks! The staff was extremely attentive. Highly recommend.

Excellent dinner and atmosphere. Huge Caesar salad and fantastic medium rare porterhouse steak for two. Loved the setting and service was also excellent. Quiet atmosphere.

We visited this restaurant on opening night in November 2017. The staff were wonderful, and the food was prepared and presented perfectly. The interior design is classic and a must see to believe. We actually found this place the night before opening and they allowed us to visit and have a drink in the lounge area as their cold open was breaking up for the evening. They were so friendly and we went back the next night for dinner. It is a bit pricey, but again, it's NYC and falls right into line with other fine dining restaurants throughout Manhattan. You must go here!!

Went for a friend's birthday dinner. They were able to accommodate a large group easily at 9pm on a Friday. Waiters were very attentive, but the food was lackluster. Our steak was unevenly cooked - one end was completely raw and the other was well done. Sides were OK, but nothing to write home about. For $50 per steak, $15 per side, and $12 per dessert, I was expecting much better.

When we're in New York, we pass by. This restaurant always proves to be an excellent choice both in the Bar Service, both in the location and in the quality of the proposals.

Don't go there unless you're very hungry! Portions are generous, you will not leave hungry which I did at several very famous NY restaurants which annoyed me. Veggie dishes to share, all very good. Good cocktails and wine list. Excellent service.

Great location if you are going to the Madison square garden it is a block away. Great atmosphere with excellent services. The food was top notch. I order a New York strip. It was delicious!! Also, try the scotch and bubbles cocktail is was so good!! Would definitely go back!!

Top notch service in this tucked away intimate steakhouse tucked away in the old Lower Lobby bank vault of the historic Art Deco New Yorker Hotel. Mostly Eastern European staff, delightful Greek waitress and Ukrainian bartender made our group feel at home which brought us back each day of our stay. Nice, clubby atmosphere, good drinks and attentive service hopefully should make this relatively new steakhouse popular. Prime beef, well marbled and well prepared as were the selection of sides and sauces. Reasonable prices. Great location. Open to midnight.

Lovely little steak restaurant that you would miss if you blinked! Very hidden away underground is this old bank vault turned steak house! We were seated inside what was the old vault, which has kept it's charm and the ambiance is perfect for a romantic all be it unusual dinner! The food was absolutely delicious, I would expect nothing else from a New York steak restaurant! Our waiter was friendly and helpful. I think it was a little over-priced when you consider having to add a 20% tip, but it was a memorable evening and something a little different.

we ate hearnbeforethe ranger game. which turned out to be good. the steak was am porthousemfor2. decent. the foie gras apprise was terrible. shrimp cocktail was good. i would give 4 stars

This is more of a “special occasion” place than an everyday restaurant. Superb service, exqusite food and all for big money ($100 each, with wine).

It is a real shame that such a great location is so poorly managed. The supervisor is not even able to say hello when you enter the restaurant, let alone come to the table. The hostess at the entrance and the "cleaners" are very friendly, but the "restaurant manager" was not all that. The starters were bland in taste, presented in a dreary manner and average. The main courses, the meat, were very good and the portions were really large. In our opinion, the portions were too large. Tables are not cleared for a long time. Service is quick and at the table when it comes to selling, but not afterwards! The entire team lacks leadership, especially since there were a lot of colleagues on site in service. The 20% tip that is automatically added to the bill is more than inappropriate. The ambience is nice, but also interchangeable. The safe room is small and the acoustics are far too loud. There is no atmosphere or charm. Conclusion: overpriced and not at all reasonable prices, combined with a self-confident and arrogant restaurant manager with his uncoordinated service team. What a pity. It's also a pity that no one asks whether you liked it or whether you enjoyed it - probably knowing the answer! For us it was the first and last time in this restaurant, which we really cannot recommend.

Very cool restaurant in an old bank vault, greeted with 2 glasses of champagne on arrival for mentioning our anniversary in the booking Good service by the chap with the moustache, ordered filet mignon and prawn sliders to start which were really good, followed by the NY strip steak and the 12 hour short rib. Sides we had mac and cheese and duck fat potato cake - MASSIVE portions. Kind of wish the waiter had warned us when we ordered but I get why they don't do that! Amazing strip steak, cooked to perfection and served with roasted garlic. Husband's short rib was really nice but too much for one person, as was the potato cake. The service was good throughout but we seemed to get a bit of attitude from Mr Moustache when I 'only' opted to pay 15% tip, which was still loads! I had issues with the card payment when I got home to the UK (an extra pending payment showed on my account for 2 weeks), I emailed them to sort and received no reply, I did eventually get a reply on Facebook but they couldn't help so had to go through my bank which was annoying but it was sorted in the end. I do recommend this place though, really great food and a unique venue.

Delicious craft cocktails as well as unique versions of standards. Service was marvelous and room was cozy.

Opposite MSG. GREAT for pre or post game high end steak house. Nice selections on the menu. Had the Smoked King Salmon last night. It was a large excellent portion.

WOW.I have not been here since 2019 but it did not disappoint! The ambiance was Awsome the appetizers ...were Awsome ! Especially the Tuna! The Manager George was a real gentleman and the service was Impecable . Had the Porterhouse it was awsome!! Thank you for a great night!

Service was excellent (thank you to our server for noting our daughters birthday and bringing out a piece of cake!), and steaks/sides very good. Very cool layout, but pop music didn’t really fit the atmosphere. Was very quiet which was shocking to me for a Saturday night. Overall a very good experience, would recommend.

We all know that NYC is full of steakhouses, some very famous ones at that. But Butcher & Banker is a newer, lesser known one and that is perfectly OK. It is excellent. My New York Strip was marbleized to perfection, cooked exactly how I wanted, and had the perfect seasoning rubbed into it. The popular double thick bacon is to die for and all of our side dishes were tasty and fresh. A lot of steakhouses are overrated but this isn't one of them. The service was great and we never had to wait on anything. They found out we had a show to catch, so they increased their speed. It was an excellent dinner and I definitely recommend this restaurant.

We had the duck and the steak/shrimp sliders. They were wonderful. The ambience was great, as was the service.

Wife and I had a 'date night' last Thursday and had the most amazing steaks! I would say best ever had and I have been to some acclaimed places prior. Recommend the 'cowboy ribeye'. My wife had the fillet and while not a big steak person is still talking about it. Very yummy and the bank vault setting just adds to the experience. While not cheap, the reality is that all the good NYC steak places are in the same ball park. Recommended!

We ate dinner here on Christmas day and were not disappointed. I love lobster bisque, and I loved theirs, especially the portion size. It was very well-balanced flavor-wise and had a nice texture. I enjoyed my daily special - Halibut Oscar, I think (I know it was "Oscar" and think it was Halibut). The Bearnaise sauce and crab meat on top were perfection, and the fish was nicely done. Two friends got the rib-eye steak and devoured the whole thing. Sides do not come with the meals, so we ordered ones to share. The sharing portions were generous, and three of them were adequate for four people. Eating inside the vault was unique, and we had an attentive waiter. I hope that they do a better job maintaining their bathrooms in the future. For an expensive restaurant, their facilities were disappointing.

So this was our first time at Butcher & Banker. We live in NJ and my BF made the reservation after seeing it on one of the Nicola Tesla documentaries. It is located in an old bank in the basement of the New Yorker Hotel, which is why there is a ginormous vault in the dining room. If you don't know where it is, it's not easy to find. There is a side entrance, which is very inconspicuous and you cannot go in that way. To enter, make your way into the hotel lobby and veer to the left past Tick Tock and take the elevator one floor down. When you step off the elevator, the entrance is to your right. The door is propped open by a jockey holding lantern. The first thing you'll notice is the vault door. That thing must weigh a ton! Right in front of the door is a seating area for drinks and directly in front of you will be the bar. Everything looks very warm and inviting. There is a hushness to area that makes it feel very upscale (at least when we got there). When we went, there was a large party being set up in the vault. I assume it can also be set up for 4 tops. We were seated as soon as we walked in and took up a table in the back of the dining room table in an area that used to be reserved for booths for people who came in to take a look at their safe deposit boxes. Our server, Nestor, was a super cool dude. If you are into photography, so is he, so chat him up! We ordered drinks. I had the Singapore Sling, which was very well crafted and my BF had the Proper Manhattan. Both were served with a cherry which was neither a maraschino nor a Luxardo, but was delicious! For appetizers, he had the Banker's Bacon Double Thick with Serrano Pepper-Honey Glaze and Charred Poblano. while he said he would have never thought of putting the peppers together with the bacon, the combination was fantastic. I had the House-Smoked Mozzarella with Beefsteak Tomato and Micro-Arugula. The Mozzarella was smoked perfectly, ie: not too much, but even though it had a drizzle of Olive Oil, I would have appreciated a bit more and a bit of Balsamic as well. The flavors blended well together. For main, he had the Filet Mignon au Poivre with the Cognac Rocquefort Sauce and the Onion Rings with Sriracha and Smoked Paprika Salt. He thought the steak would be crusted with pepper, cooked and would come with the Cognac Rocquefort, but it was cooked and served with both sauces on the side, which were equally good. BUT THEN, he had the onion rings and I though he'd die right there. They were the BEST onion rings he (and I) have ever eaten. Period. Bar none. I had the Sliced Hanger Steak with the Frites and side of Sautéed Mushrooms. It was my first time having steak after a 3 month hiatus and it was tender and very flavorful. To finish up, we shared the Lemon Meringue Curd Tartlet with Blackberry Lemon Couture. It was really good, very thick and sweet, but when paired with the Cream it was a lovely balance of flavors. A great way to end the meal. He had what he called the Best Irish Coffee he's had in al long time, so if you're a fan, go for it!

Who knew… in the middle of the bright lights and busyness, there is this a restaurant with such elite ambiance, decor and warmth that you can sit down and enjoy a great meal. Without the loud, tick/tock rush and crowd. Butcher and Banker is this place. From the moment you enter you can absorb the dim lights and relaxed vibe. The food was delicious!!! Everything was freshly made to perfection. I had shrimp scampi which was full of good Italian flavor, The out of town guests had Kan Kan porchetta which was over the top, beyond our expectations. I caution you, come with an empty belly and you will be satisfied. From the meal, drinks and dessert I could not complain. They definitely cater to their guests and make sure you are treated with care and attention. David was a true host and made sure we were well attended. can’t wait to go again. Thanks Babe, for a beautiful night.

Chef Scott Campbell opened this unusual restaurant in November, 2017 on the vault level of the former Manufacturers Trust Company Bank.To get to the restaurant, you enter the New Yorker Hotel on 8th Avenue (near 35th Street) and take the elevator (at your left) down to the restaurant. The restaurant is located a block away from Madison Square Garden. They start you off with buns that come with a delicious onion butter as well as regular butter. My delicious hamburger is called "The Butcher's Burger" ($24), which had a delicious raclette-parmesan crust. It came with Fries but I asked for them to be replaced with Onion Rings and they did so without an extra charge. The service was attentive. In addition to the vault dining room they also offer a very attractive main dining room. The restaurant is presently open for dinner only, 7 days a week.

Beautiful restaurant, very characteristic as a location. Very good food, great meat, not fast but good service. Also great as a cocktail bar. Definitely recommended in New York, both as a kitchen and as a must-see, especially for the vault. Average price high but you are in New York in a very nice place with a high quality of food.

We stopped in drinks after a busy day exploring the city and we were glad we did. It’s not the cheapest place, but the ambience was fantastic. Definitely unusual place to have a drink! My Manhattan was delicious – although it was the first one I’ve ever had, so I have nothing to compare it to. And the server was very friendly – warm and welcoming! A lovely place to enjoy nightcap at the end of the day.

Wow! Place is beautiful, service is prefect and food is incredible. Bread was like a cloud, the flavor were so tasty. We definitely recommend

Quite possibly the best steak we have ever had! And we have eaten a lot of steak! We had the petit filet mignon and the New York strip which was superb. Great atmosphere and the feature bank vault sets the scene as soon as you walk through the door.

This turned out to be one of our favorite last stops at the end of the night. Web hours say open til 12:00am, but they seem to close at their desire. Finally found them open on Friday night. Very neat atmosphere. The food was delicious. We went 2 night's in a row. Worth a visit.

What a lovely dinner! My friend and I stumbled onto this gem and enjoyed every minute of our experience. We had cocktails at the bar before dinner which were generous and thoughtful. The menu was thoughtful and varied. The quality of the chef and his team were apparent. We started by splitting some oysters. Btw the bread is worth the trip. I believe my friend said she wanted to marry it, it was THAT delicious a blend of salt and buttery goodness. I saved room and had the fois gras and then changed gears for the butcher burger. My friend went for the steak. Both of dishes were cooked exact as we wanted (rare for me, medium for her). On a side note, we gazed in awe at the Kan Kan Pork a neighboring table ordered. Next time I'll try that sure. Our service was excellent. The staff was knowledgeable about the wine and the atmosphere was delightful. I saw couples, out of towners like me, and friends having a fun time. It was busy but NOT loud. I am definitely going back.

It's a beautiful restaurant! The service was perfect and the food was amazing!! We had Caesar salads, the filet and chocolate cake. Everything we ate was superior, even for NYC standards. We will definitely eat here again and highly recommend to anyone looking for a great steak.

A group of 5 had an amazing dinner here. I had a salad which was good, but the highlight was the steak. I have been to many of the best steakhouses and this was right up there with the best. The decor of the place was also very neat. The only downside was it was in the downstairs of a hotel. That said when you were in the restaurant you didn't feel that way. The diners enjoyed the steak more than the other meats as an aside.

Over priced not as good as they say nice place though my steak was tough you pay for fries and other sides separatly so a meal for 4 came out at 380 dollars!!!!!!!!!!

We visited here on the11th August 2019. Had a porterhouse between us. It was delicious and the vault was very interesting. I do feel though that it was deserving more from the clientele as many were wearing casual dress not that I mind shorts etc but some should make an effort for this iconic setting

My husband initially ordered a kan kan pork with a side orders of mashed potatoes and broccoli sprouts. He changed his mind and ordered the same food I got - the giant ravioli of seafood. Ordered came and got our giant raviolis but got the 2 side orders for the initial order of the kan kan pork. The waiter who took our orders specified that the kan kan pork is just the meat and might need side orders. Therefore my husband picked 2 sides. When the order came, I wonder why he did not remove or even ask if we still want the side orders when it was changed. We did not ask because we assume that the side dish won’t be serve since my husband changed his main dish. We really just wanted a relax and peaceful place to eat so we just let it go and paid for the side dishes without bringing up any complaint, but I am leaving this review because we felt like it was a sneaky move to raise our bill. The giant ravioli definitely worth what you paid for the amount of seafood in the ravioli. However, it was TOO SALTY. It could be because of the amount of seafood in it or the added salt. Overall, it was okay. We don’t mind the cost, but I just wished it was worth it.

Went here for dinner on our last night. The food was amazing as were the suroundings. Staff very attentive.

We stayed at The New Yorker, which this restaurant is located. Great food, ambiance and service! Probably the most relaxing meal we had while in NYC!

Sure beats Ruth's Chris ! ( is that establishment still operating ?) Very ok food, very good service. Wine list very good. 5 on 5 for location. In the basement of New Yorker Hotel. When you ve walked all day and feel like a steak for dinner, go right ahead. The atmosphere is posh. Be ready to dish out your dineros, though. Quite pricey for the very ok food served.

Amazing good food with cool atmosphere! Dining in the vault was a first! Love my 5 spices duck with sinful cheddar grits. A cauliflower side was the size of a volleyball but way tastier! Good steak with smoked herbs, and many other unconventional menu choices. Love it, just didn’t have room for dessert. So, again, what's the occasion? Just celebrating life and yummy food...

The food was great, the service was great. Cant say enough good things. We really enjoyed our dinner here compared to the week before at STK which was awful.

From the moment we walked in the manager and the receptionist were uninviting and unfriendly. The wait staff while trying hard couldn’t get anything right. The food was mediocre and the prices were quite high. All in all this restaurant does not work on any level. Very disappointing experience!

Interior, service, food & wine - worth of every penny. New Yorker striped stake and roasted garlic highly recommended. You won’t be disapointed!

The ambiance of this restaurant is really nice. Although there is an actual bank vault in the restaurant, we chose to eat in the main dining area. The vault just seemed small, low ceiling, and didn't really have a great feel. We started with a couple martinis, which were both excellent. We had salads before our main course, which were very good as well. My husband order filet (which I probably should have too). My NY strip was probably one of the worse steaks I've ever had. It was chewy and rubbery the whole way through. I tried to cut around it, but it was just not a good steak. I was really disappointed as it was my 60th birthday evening. We did order a couple sides, which are very ample, so don't order too many if you happen to order. Dessert was very good and thankfully the wait staff did not come around and all sing. I absolutely hate that.

Very good steak house near Madison Square Garden. Juicy and tasty meat, too salty a hair. Additional accompaniments, remember to check to not have an overpriced final rating. Vin excellent! Like everywhere in New York, think about tax and tips because it goes fast. Very cozy environment, accessible from the lobby of the New Yorker, then in the basement.

The Butcher & Banker is located in an old bank. Some seating is inside the vault with deposit boxes. The bar is elaborate and the restaurant is going for a "Speak Easy" feel which it achieves. The service was great. My husband and I had the grass fed strips which were juicy and perfectly cooked. Sides are a la cart. Very pricey, but worth it.

Although the food was very nice, the evening was completely spoiled by the entitled waiter kicking off over not getting 20% of the bill as a tip. When the prices are as extortionate as they are with every bottle of wine being $90+ and every stake $50+, the establishment is being sufficiently remunerated for their food AND service. We leave and 10% tip and the waiter loses his s**t claiming we've stolen from him. It's not our responsibility to tip this person and to try guilt trip us into giving him a bonus was out of order. His quarrels should be raised with his employer not us. Our night was completely ruined by this certain (bald) individual.

I frequently stay at The New Yorker hotel and love the Art Deco environment and history. The addition of this restaurant is fantastic. The ambiance is special, cocktails are elegant, food is fantastic, and service is spot on. Had dinner here last night and back for a night cap in the relaxing bar area tonight.

We ate here as it was just round the corner from our hotel. The restaurant is set in the basement of The New Yorker hotel in a former bank vault, so an unusual but fun setting. For a Friday night it was relatively quiet, perhaps half full, and despite the fun surroundings the atmosphere was somewhat lacking - perhaps a symptom of being a hotel restaurant. Food was all good, with generous portions. Service excellent. Being a hotel restaurant, prices were on the high side. A good evening out if you fancy something a bit different.

The place is very clean, low lighting, romantic, and the food was very good. The staff was very on top of things. the tomahawk rib steak was off the charts good highly recommend this. even the music in the background help set a nice mood. Great Place Thank You All for a nice meal

My wife and I visited on our last evening in New York. The restaurant is attached to the New Yorker hotel where we stayed. As there were thunder storms, we didn’t fancy going out so this seemed a convenient restaurant to visit as we wouldn’t have to go outside. What we found was really attentive service and thick NY strip steaks. There were plenty of wine choices too and the cocktails were nice. We spent $230 for two steaks, sides, sauces and glasses of wine and cocktails which also included tip!

I wanted to like this place but did not. The decor is nice. I went early evening with my 6yo daughter, and it seemed as soon as they saw her, it seemed as though they wished we were not there. It took over 15 minutes to get our drinks. The service was very average and at times hard to attract our waiter. The salad had old wilted greens, hard to do with iceberg lettuce. I ordered the duck and could almost not eat it. My daughter loved her plain noodles with butter. She ordered chocolate ice cream for desert, took one bite and said no thanks. I was dark bitter chocolate. Sorry will not go back.

My husband and I stayed at The New Yorker for the weekend and this steakhouse is part of the hotel. We always go to a different steakhouse every time we’re in NYC but because we had so many things going on during the morning and afternoon, we decided to just stop in the Butcher & Banker. We sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly. We ordered the Porterhouse for 2 cooked medium along with the duck fat potato cake. The potato cake was outstanding. The Porterhouse for 2 however was not. We ordered medium but that poor steak came out beyond well done. We were so hungry and despite the over cooked nature of the steak it was tasty. Needless to say, we will not be returning to this restaurant.

Excellent food, brilliant service and an outstanding setting. Also a great location, next to MSG, for a pre-show/game dinner. Even if you’re not into steak this is still a great place, the duck was fantastic.

We stayed at the New Yorker Hotel, so this was very convenient for us to try. We stopped in Friday and Saturday night for late night drinks. The atmosphere is really unique and my merlot was quite good. That is it for the stars. Wait staff and bartender were very cold personality wise and seemed more concerned about making sure we would leave by midnight, If they smiled, their faces may have cracked. Based on this, I would not try and eat here .

You can access the restaurant via the lobby of the Wyndham Hotel (on 8th). It's in the basement, in an old bank vault. The door is the circular vault door. It's a standard NYC Steak restaurant, but super high-end. Wonderful steaks and the sides are definitely family style. The service is excellent, as is the location, the ambience and all the food was perfect. They need to improve the Wine list and the beer list, but that's just a 'nit'.

Great service lovely staff what more can you ask for Great coffee fresh food every day all day I liked my sandwich with extra filling wasn’t a problem

Terrible experience on our planned Christmas dinner. I made a reservation for 5pm on the Open Table app and looked forward to having a wonderful Christmas dinner with my family. I have to mention up front, my family visits a lot of top notch steak restaurants in Miami and Los Angeles and we noticed so many excellent reviews on this one on the Open Table app We thought that's the restaurant to go to in New York. Terrible decision! When we entered the restaurant, we felt all the employees looked prejudice at us. Yes I am a single mom with three children but we have our standards and we are not shy on spending money on our dinings. We were treated poorly, like we take the spot of someone which would spend more money there. That's why I used the word prejudice. But ok, this shouldn't ruin our Christmas dinner, we ordered our main courses and sides and my food came out cold, after waiting a very long time to get it. The mushrooms were very cold and the meat lukewarm. Since alone the meat without the sides is $68 on the menu, at least I expected it to be enjoyable. I mentioned to the waiter that the food is cold. After some time I get the same food back, microwaved (!) with the same cut I first took out of the steak. I don't know about you, but I think it will not taste the same, if it was cooked, cooled off and then microwaved. Most restaurants apologize and make you a fresh steak. When I mentioned the disappointment to the manager, that I received the same steak microwaved back and that I know that definitely effected the taste and quality of the meat, the manager was grumpy but took it back and offered to take it off the check. Then our waters didn't get refilled anymore and I started to get disappointed about the poor treatment. But now, what happened now was the reason I got so upset. Because besides low quality food and terrible service, something sneaky happened. I received an email from open table at 6.10pm, that my reservations got canceled by the restaurant. Let's look at the timeline, we arrived before 5pm, took a family photo at 5.33pm and after I complained about the meat, the reservation got cancelled? Yes, they did. Because cancelled reservations can't make reviews on the Open Table app. So now I know why their reviews were so high. I guess whenever someone is unsatisfied, they make sure the customer can't make a review about their poor experience! I mentioned this situation to the manager, he got all nervous and stumbled over his words finishing up with the excuse, we are just not the right restaurant for you. Excuse me? What is that supposed to mean? But the manager was right, I expected a lot better in every way. But to be so sneaky about avoiding bad reviews, should not be allowed. Every customer has the right to share their experience.

The place obviously wants to be high class and special Unfortunately the surroundings does not meet the high meat quality They use a lot of e-mailing ensuring that your dress code is appropriate but forget the actual behaviour of the guests. We had a group of young girls having a birthday party making it impossible to have a normal conversation or even enjoy the amazing food (in addition the tv was on in the bar with sports, but hey, that’s just America

I visited here for my birthday arranged by my wonderful wife . The meal here was absolutely amazing and the waiters know exactly what wines will suit your food, but also there is no hard sell on expensive drinks, in fact the one they suggested was on the cheaper end of the pricing. A must visit if you are in New York.

Butcher and Banker is definitely a restaurant for steak lovers, with a relaxed and unique (see the bank vault) interior that just feels cool from the moment you enter. My friend and I wanted to try some of best steak New York has to offer, so B&B was the perfect spot for us. The service was professional yet friendly, the waiter brought out the food and drinks at a comfortably steady rate. We wanted to begin with seafood and the Blue Island oysters were so fresh and juicy, the way oysters should be. Then came the tuna tartare with yuzu koshu, sesame oil, angel hair chile & papadum chips, such an exquisite combination. I washed them down with the Scotch & Bubbles cocktail made with Glenlivet 12-Year, apple juice, honey & champagne, while my friend had a classic dirty martini. The Duck fat potato cake was a terrific accompaniment to the steak dish that came next. The porterhouse steak was just what we wanted, cooked to perfection and beautifully plated, we both loved every bite. For dessert we first had the classic warm apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. – wonderful! Then came the lemon meringue curd tartlet with blackberry lemon conture was a taste to behold. To finish off our desserts we had the Grappa Antinori Tignanello and Brandy Alexander Cognac with Creme de Cacao, cream & nutmeg. A meat lovers trip to New York is not complete without a visit to Butcher and Banker!

Was recommended by my concierge - having been in my steak houses in NYC from very high end to good old value based. The food was up there with the best one so have been in - the value is exceptional - and the team are so friendly and attentive - shout out to Alex . Highly recommend.

We ate here for dinner on a Friday Night. We had a 7:00 reservation. when we arrived it was not crowded and we were seated immediately. The waiter took a while then came over and took our drink orders. He did not come back for almost 20-25 minutes. He then took our dinner order. The food took a long time to come out. Everything we ordered was good. Nothing was exceptional which you would expect for a steak house and the price. As it got later the restaurant did get more crowded and the maître d did say hey were short staffed. The truth is when you pay that kind of money the service must be terrific. This just fell very short and the food was not exceptional. that being said we would probably not return. there are many options in the city for better steak houses for the same money.

I really thought the food would be like WOW, it was good, but I was not WOWED by it. The service was perfect and the history of the restaurant was really neat. I would recommend everyone go here at least once to experience this place. I am glad I did!

We ate hear the other night and all I can say is it was one of the best meals I ever had. The service was excellent and the setting unique. It's not cheap but still worth it for a special night.

In basement of the historic New Yorker hotel across from Madison square Garden. We ate in the bar and had excellent service. The Caesar was quite good. Seafood choices were fresh and good. There are a lot of good steakhouses in NYC and I wouldn’t put this among the best but it was good.

Arrived with no reservation and we were easily able to be seated. Thanksgiving day, and the menu had some good specials. Huge meals, well presented and great flavours. Wait staff were friendly.

What an exceptional experience! This place is amazing and a true gem. The meal was scrumptious, terrifically prepared. Just phenomenal! I will definitely go back.

I don’t know where to start, from start to finish the service was excellent. I originally contacted the restaurant by email after stumbling on it by accident. George was very attentive to my queries and questions along the whole time. I booked the meal for 27 people including myself and new husband. I wasn’t sure how this was going to turn out give I had never eaten here before and was booking it from Glasgow. We were originally meant to be inthwie chandelier room but the day before George emailed and asked if we would like the vault room, which we of course jumped at that chance. The meal was absolutely astounding. Everyone got their dinner at the same time and it was all cooked to perfection, given everyone wanted their steak cooked differently the timing was just perfect. Not one person in our group had any complaints to make, in fact every person raved about just how good the service and food was! I would highly recommend this place for both private dining and lunch or dinner. Fantastic food and service.

We visited NYC for my birthday and stayed at the New Yorker and only spotted this restaurant when we arrived. We decided to give it a try on the night we were going to a concert and didn’t have much time so only had one course. The waiting staff were attentive and friendly and we had a complimentary brioche style bread with garlic butter and onion butter. My husband had the duck which was fabulous and I had the scampi spaghetti which was delicious. We enjoyed it so much we returned on our last night. This time as well as the complimentary bread, we had a platter to share for starters, although we couldn’t finish it. My husband had the scampi spaghetti and I had pan roasted Amish chicken which was cooked beautifully and was really tasty. Once again the waiters were attentive and friendly and we really enjoyed our meal.

After a busy day and having just recovered from a bout of winter "bug" my wife and I were not inclined to leave the hotel with the group of our friends and opted to to dine at the recently opened "Butcher and Banker" steakhouse which is accessed through the vault door of the bank that used to be in the lower floors of the New Yorker Hotel where we were staying. It turned out to be a wonderful choice! The restaurant is well appointed and has a unique comforting (?) ambience bar area with a quiet dining area. The service was friendly, informative, and attentive without being intrusive. My wife and I split a NY Strip steak perfectly cooked medium rare with a side of sauteed spinach in evoo & garlic....we split a creme brulee` for desert which was as good as any we've ever had. This establishment is not inexpensive but it's Manhattan!!! Great choice for dinner.

This was one of the worst meals I have ever had in NYC and I have lived here my whole life. First the tables and chairs are all old and worn. Go to the mens room and have been in cleaner city public bathrooms then theirs. They present themselves as this great hidden spot in a bank vault, great keep the vault locked. Horrible baked clams that I believe were out of a box. Ordered a Tomahawk for two and a Porterhouse for two. At $168 and $150 you would think they could get the order right, but they were busy taking the garbage out of the main dinning room while we were sitting (*8pm this is). They brought us two Tomahawk meals and said sorry they put the order in wrong. My steak I should have sent back as it was the worst cut I have ever had, with almost no meat and all fat. I had a giant pile of fat on my plate and the waiter actually asked if I wanted to take home. At the prices they charge go to the resturants that actually know how to cook and select the proper cuts.

Recently had dinner for four while staying at the New Yorker Hotel. Excellent service and food, not inexpensive, but an excellent dining experience in a unique atmosphere.

Just stopped in for drinks. Unique space with very friendly waitresses and inventive cocktails. Will definitely be back to try dinner.

Really really impressed here - setting of the restaurant is in a great location outside MSG and the vibe underground is amazing, set inside an old bank vault. Food is of another quality and really lived up to other reviews. Would highly recommend!

Butcher and Banker is located in the historic New Yorker Hotel on 8th Avenue between 34th and 35th St. It is diagonally across from Madison Square Garden in NYC.. When you walk in to the hotel you have no idea what a unique restaurant is awaiting you. The elevator bank is to your left which was built specifically for Butcher and Banker ,one floor below. As the door opens , I was mesmerized to see the space, beautifully appointed with the historic Vault from the bank which once operated decades ago to the safety deposit boxes which remained with lighting incorporated upon the back wall of them. The area of this intimate restaurant where I dined was actually in the Vault. Amazing concept, utilization of this landmark was incredible! There are other dining spaces as well , all using Erte'ish art deco original artifacts from the New Yorker Hotel and the Bank from years long gone by. The famous chandelier which once stood in the main lobby is now hanging in this area of the restaurant with detail and romance yet very much in the now of today. I started with a drink at the bar where some patrons ate from the well rounded bar menu. We continued to have dinner afterwards and you must try the bread and garlic butter brought to the table, it is baked on site , it is to die for! Our waiter Juan Miguel was knowledgeable, professional, accommodating and courteous . He made our experience wonderful, suggesting menu items and pacing the appetizers of Tuna Tartare and Crab Meat Salad with Avocado and a light mustard sauce before our entree. We decided on Filet Mignon with sautéed broccoli as our main dish, we were satisfied beyond measure. The whole experience made me feel transported back in time. The food, atmosphere and vibe made us feel as if we were in a speakeasy or private dinner club from long ago. Do yourself a favor, try this steakhouse, try the cocktail vault ,you will not be disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a major splurge for us. 2 adults and 2 teenager boys. We arrived for an early dinner. Service was top notch. Food was good. Must try their Mac and Cheese as a sidedish

Once you walk into this throw back bar. It takes you back to a greater time. From the use of the old bank vault to the glassware they serve their great drinks in. And if you get 1 food item get the Filet and Garlic Shrimp Sliders.. They were awesome. This place will certainly be on our list every time we come back to NYC.

We arrived for our reservation and were seated immediately (they weren't busy at all) in a back room and pretty much forgotten about. A person came about 10min. after we were seated and took our drink order. Brought us our bottle of wine and we never saw him again. Approximately 20 later, a different person appeared with bread and took our order. Starters came 15 min. later. Caprese salad and I don't even recall what my husband ordered (it was that memorable) the salad was drowning in balsamic (I love balsamic) but it was ridiculous. My husband ordered the KanKan. What a waste of perfectly good meat. 1/2 half after the starters plates left, a server showed up with the Kankan laying on a plate and asked if my husband wanted to take a photo. Why we're not sure. He left and came back 10 minutes later with it cut up and my lamb dinner. The lamb was cooked correctly, but flavorless. We always try at least one new restaurant when we visit the city at least once a year. We won't be returning here. The ambiance depicting on the website isn't accurate.

Very cool place in the basement of the Tick Tock diner in an old Bank Vault! Service and food were average at best. Business dinner for 4: with 2 ordering Steak, 1 ordering Tuna and 1 ordering Lamb. both steaks came out basically raw (both were ordered medium, the Tune came out well done but order rare, and Lamb came out as ordered. Tracking down our Service to reconcile was difficult. Not acceptable for a Steakhouse and not at NY pricing. It seems like they have not been open for long, so maybe they haven't hit their groove yet. Will wait and give it a shot again in a few months. At the very least will return with friends for a drink and the place is interesting.

This place was a great find that we actually had 2 meals here. The staff are so attentive and friendly and cannot do enough for you. The food was spot on and cooked to perfection. If you are ever in NYC, give this place a visit as you will not be disappointed.

We chose this place to have a pre-concert dinner. I would never visit again. Tuna Tartare app tasted like all they did was add soy sauce. The crackers that came with it were stale. The lamb chops were bland, raw and cold. I ordered them medium. The asparagus side was extremely bland. They steam them & give you the sauce on the side. The mango sorbet was sour like lemon mango sorbet. The room we were seated in smelled like a bathroom and we were seated in a small 2 person table while there were other empty tables. No, no one reserved them because when we left, they were still empty! This is not a cheap venue. We expected so much more. Only thing that was good was our server served us quickly and we left quickly.

This lovely restaurant is situated at the side of our hotel ( The Wyndham )and below ground. A restaurant and bar with a full bar of cocktails, wines & beers & more. We were given warm bread to start with. We had ribeye steak, fresh salmon and shrimp carbonara. All were utterly delicious. Amazing portion sizes that we couldn’t finish everything. Again another place absolutely packed with a great feel about it. You can pop in for just a drink, snack or meal. Excellent service throughout Lovely background music. Highly Recommend but it is on the expensive side.

We had drinks at Butcher and Banker recently. This is the first time we have ever eaten inside a bank vault! The restaurant is located on the basement level of the New Yorker Hotel near Penn Station. You take an elevator down one level. The restaurant was once part of Manufacturers Trust Company, who built a huge bank vault under the hotel. The round vault door is about eight feet high and two feet thick! The dining room inside the vault is lined with safety deposit boxes, several having notice candles for atmospheric lighting. (These are electric, not actual candles). We had a round of drinks. Wine starts around $15 a glass and beers are about $9.00. Since we were at a table where they expect diners to sit, we ordered food too. We had Oysters Rockefeller. Four oysters ran $19.00, which isn’t bad for midtown Manhattan. My wife and I disappeared after the first round or so. Our friends might have stayed for dinner. The service was good. The vault is a “must see!” That’s what brought us in!

Early dinner to catch a 7p show at The Garden. Walked into this old bank vault and loved the ambience. Hostess was attentive. Wait staff appeared to be top notch and they were. The problem was The Food. I ordered the Filet Mignon Tartare - it was presented on a plate like a pile of dog food garnished with large circles of radishes and onion rings and served with Ortega taco shells as the receptacle - seriously...it was so bland and ugly that I felt sorry for it. Zero salt....My main course was the Black and Blue Tuna Filet - again - zero seasoning - and it was tough. The shining star on the plate were the thick cut Knueske bacon strips - but why they were paired with supposedly sashimi grade tuna - could not tell you...the succotash (lima beans and corn combo) again no seasoning - but I did eat all of it because I was hungry! (having only dabbled with my appetizer...) My husband had the wedge - the bacon bits were under done (not nice and crispy) and his scallops were garnished with foie gras that was only grilled on one side. We did enjoy two bottles wine and scooted over to MSG and picked up a box of popcorn and a pretzel. So disappointed especially have read Trip Advisor reviews...was it a bad night? Was the chef out ill and someone was pinch hitting? Do not know …. Suggest a hard pass on this...

After a long day of travel and being stuck on tarmac, this was a treat. The restaurant used to be a bank (thus the 'Banker' and is in the basement of the New Yorker hotel, where we were staying. The old bank vault is still there, and some of the seating is in the vault. The food was DELICIOUS. The only downside: we weren't offered a doggy bag for what we couldn't eat. There was no fridge in the room either, so maybe it's just as well. The food is served family style and we shared the pork belly and the potatoes in duck fat. It's not cheap, so it was a nice night for the two of us before the rest of the party arrived.

I had dinner with 2 dear friends at the nostalgic Butcher and Banker this week. It is truly one of the most interesting restaurants I have eaten at in NYC! To dine amongst the actual original Vaults and Safety deposit boxes from the once home of the historic Manufacturer's Trust Bank on 34th St and 8th Ave was surreal. The food was amazing, we opted to try the tasting menu which covers a wide array of delicious food selections. Appetizers were Fried Calamari, Bankers honey glazed Bacon slabs, oysters.. Dinner Filet Mignon, Asparagus, Grilled Ora King Salmon and the Duck Fat Potato cake with crunchy onions!, all were superb! We completed our tasting with dessert Creme Brulee and a light fluffy delicious cheesecake with fresh whipped creme. Expresso Martinis and coffee ,then we all said our goodbyes and floated home happily and satisfied! We were welcomed by the manager Dave who was engaging, welcoming and congenial and steered us around the menu perfectly. I recommend asking for him to suggest dishes you may enjoy. I suggest this restaurant , easily located across from Madison Square Garden, Penn Station and in central Manhattan close to Lincoln Tunnel.

Truly enjoyed dinner at this restaurant. The wine list was very nice and dinner selections were tempting. In the end, 3 of our party had steak and one a seafood selection. We all enjoyed our dinner and the attention the friendly server provided. Would recommend and will return.

Visited this restaurant as we was staying at the New Yorker hotel steak and rest of meals where perfect staff very friendly restaurant clean and tidy very nice only down side to a very nice place where the restroom what ever time of day we used them they wasn’t very clean

This restaurant was below our hotel (The New Yorker at Wyndham). The history of it- you’re literally eating in a former bank and can even eat in the vault. This is all underground! The food was delicious. Atmosphere- one of kind!

We booked this restaurant as a 21st birthday treat for my daughter as part of trip to New York and Las Vegas, the venue is exactly as advertised and has a really special feel about it, it isn't cheap but the cocktails were good, my Fillet mignon was excellent, my husband was not as impressed with the strip steak. The service was excellent, we refused a dessert as we had eaten more than enough, the staff then brought a dessert with a candle for my daughters birthday which was a lovely touch slightly marred by then being charged for it. On the whole, worth a visit if you're happy to pay for it.

Stopped in for a night cap and was pleasantly impressed. We had narrowed our dinner to here and Nick and Stefs and chose the latter. The ambiance is spectacular. The bar is small and night a hang out style bar maybe 15-18 seats. The bartender was awesome, drink prices steep, (hello basement of the New Yorker ......) but a cool place we will be dining at next time we return to the Garden for a show.

This was our first and last time at this restaurant. The place is close to MSG hence why we picked it. Overall service was very good. Food not so much. The bread was pretty, soft and warm but bland. However, to be fair if you put the spread that was served with it much better. Our appetizer: Caesar Salad has too much dressing and no “bite”. The caprese salad while the tomatoes were very good the mozzarella was tasteless. We shared the porterhouse which was served rare which was fine with us even though we said medium rare. But that was pretty good steak. The sides the potatoes were ok but the mushrooms completely tasteless. How do you have tasteless exotic mushrooms?! No thank you not going back. Not worth my time and definitely not worth the $$$!

Located near to the Times Square. Nice atmospfere. Very cozy. Excellent steak. Excellent! But also good selection of fish. Nice coctails and very polite, witty staff. This definitely should be a place to visit. It is not cheap, but it is value for money.

We were looking forward to a good steak dinner on our last night in NYC, unfortunately from the minute we stepped into this restaurant it was a disappointment- I don’t think I’ve ever had such bad service in America and the manager of the restaurant didn’t seem to care at all. My husband enjoyed his food, however I ordered steak frites medium and the steak came practically blue along with some congealed béarnaise sauce. Would not recommend.

A delightful restaurant hidden in the depths of the New Yorker hotel. There specialty is beef but I highly recommend their duck with the light cherry brandy sauce. The service was excellent and staff quite accommodating.

The food and wine were great. The staff was helpful and friendly. As the restaurant are in and old bank it had a large vault and it made an very special atmosphere that we wont forget.

Take the elevator down to this cellar to enter this establishment. Look down - the soiled carpet serves as quite the accurate precursor for the meal you’ll about to receive. Let me preface this by saying that we go to a lot of steakhouses. You’re in NYC: Do not choose this one, please. The server was rude, the food was bland, and the steak wasn’t even cooked correctly. An extreme disappointment. $192 later... and we should have really gone to any of the other options on the island. To put it all into perspective: The CARROTS were the highlight of our meal. So sad, indeed.

The steaks were good - not the best I’ve ever had - but not bad either. The sides were really lacking, especially the mashed potatoes, they tasted so bland. The atmosphere and service was lovely though. For the price we expected a little better.

An old bank vault turned into a restaurant. Easy to find, on the basement floor of the New Yorker hotel on the corner of 8th Avenue / 34th street. Intimate, different, special, a fantastic experience. A warm welcome on arrival, great service, fantastic food - we shared the porterhouse steak for two with t-bone cauliflower, carrots, and fries to compliment. The meal was presented beautifully and it was utterly delicious. We were too full for a desert, so I had an Irish coffee, my wife a cocktail, and we sat in the lounge to enjoy it. An amazing experience, and though not a cheap night out it was worth every cent. Highly recommend.

The only reason I knew this place was here was I used the toilets downstairs at tick rock (It's a 24 hour diner attached to the new yorker hotel). So glad we went. We only had cocktails as we already had dinner. I would definately recommend. Very friendly staff and has a special ambience in there. £30 for 2 cocktails but that is the going rate.

This is an old bank office site that has been converted to a steakhouse. The atmosphere is very intimate. The food is extremely authentic with steaks cooked to perfection. Sides are a real treat and desserts were quite good too. Thourogjlt reccomended. On the higher side for price but if you want quality (and large portions) it’s well worth it !

Staying at the New Yorker and noticed the steak house, me & my partner love a steak so thought we’d try it out. What can I say except AMAZING! Such an amazing idea to have dinner in an old vault and the food is amazing! Recommend the fillet mignon and Béarnaise sauce. Sides are definitely to share, big portions no need for starters. Best steak I have had in NYC

I dined here having some time after checking out of the New Yorker and heading to JFK. The restaurant is in a former bank vault under the hotel and the decor & atmosphere are fantastic. The service from all was second to none- quite a contrast to many staff at the hotel! Water was constantly topped up, the food was cooked quickly but not so quickly to make it feel rushed I had the Hanger Steak which was cooked as requested and very tasty and succulent. The red wine sauce was delicious. It comes with fries which were fine- you can't really get these wrong/ right! I ordered a side of mushrooms which were probably the highlight of the meal- absolutely divine. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for and great food, excellent service and a unique location I thought it was pretty good value. Of the 3 restaurants in the New Yorker, this is by far the best.

My wife , daughter and self had the worst dining experience ever at this restaurant. My wife and I had worked in Michelin Star restaurants throughout the United States for over thirty years- Folks, please do not waste your hard earned money at this place. To many things are wrong with this restaurant. I will just tell you that the steak was awful. The service was below average for NYC and management non-existent. The hostess and maitre d should be fired. Finally, this is the only review I have ever written and have never complained in a restaurant. I figure if you are that bad you won’t last, no need to offer my opinion. However, these days and the climate that we live in , I would hate for anyone to waste their money on something that you take for granted in NYC…and that’s above average restaurants. Stay away!

My wife and I had a dinner date here during our last trip to New York City, so this review is based on a solo outing here. My wife ordered a "Full Monty", which came with a petite filet mignon, a braised beef shortrib, roasted marrow bone, and grilled cherry tomatoes. The selection also came with French fries. I ordered a New York Strip, along with a side of mushrooms. My wife and I both ordered our steaks rare - which is how they arrived at our table. Neither one of us are fans of filet mignon, but April said this was perfection on a plate, almost enough to convert her. The *ONLY* quibble we might have is that the French fries didn't seem seasoned enough. BUT - don't let that stop you. Customer service was top notch, everywhere from the door greeter, to the server, to the fella I guessed was the restaurant manager walking around, to the food runners. I can't wait to go back to NYC, if anything, just to dine here again.

I love steak and can be very picky. The Delmonico steak was incredible. My $19 side of mushrooms tasted like they came from a can and microwaved them. Be careful as they charge extra for soft drink refills.

This place was and is extraordinary Everything from start to finish perfection They remembered it was a special occasion ( that meant a lot) The ambience and service sensational The food definitely top top notch I discovered this place by accident and would tell every person I know going to New York to make a booking I suggest asking to eat in the actual vault If you can’t do dinner there at the very least a drink at the bar A night we will remember for the rest of our lives Thankyou George and all the staff If you know someone going to New York tell them to book it now Magnificent We had the steak for 2 One of best experiences we had ever had Anyone Aussie better than Rockpool Just go book it you will not regret it

My daughter & I LOVED Butcher & Banker. The ambiance was very unique. Our waiter took the time to tell us the history of the building. Menu was full of delicious food & wine options. We had a perfectly cooked steak, superior mac & cheese & asparagus with a special sauce. Price was appropriate. This was a wonderful meal that we won't forget! Thank you, Butcher & Banker.

Just glad a $500+ meal for 4 here. Told by waiter (maitre d) not ‘to come back ‘ as only left $30 tip to a guy who just served us glasses of $90wine. Meal wasn’t great but I don’t consider it my obligation to pay his salary on a steak meal costing more than $125 /head. Made to feel lik skinflints and tipping in excess of $75 obligatory. We’ll be taking the advice of the obnoxious ....k and not be back.

Our server, who never gave us his name, was not the best we've had at Butcher and Banker. I had ordered the "house special" Manhattan, and was down to the smallest of swallows as he walked by a couple times. I had to stop him and ask for another. That's poor service in my book. Any business owner knows alcohol sells, and his tip would have been more than 20% if he'd recognized my drink being low. Food was good, however. My NY Strip steak used to come with a large roasted head of garlic. This trip, it was really small. My wife's Filet Mignon also came with a small head, which it never came with before. Thankfully, she's not a fan of that extra garlic, so I took hers. The lobster mac and cheese was AMAZING! f'm not sure if we'll be back in the future. Drink was ok, and service was average. Food was great, as usual. But service is key when it comes to selling that food. Were there any specials tonight??? We'll never know. Average experience.

Loved the concept of this restaurant and the decor was super cool. They had some lovely cocktails and the staff were all very friendly. The food was a tad hit and miss. The starters were a bit weird (the prawn cocktail one in particular), the steak was lovely and nicely cooked but a little greasy and the chips were very cold and soft. The caesar salad was really good though and the bread was amazing (although there was WAY too much of it). All in all, probably 3.5/5.

A steakhouse in an old bank vault with good food, good service but almost $200 for 2 persons is simply too much.

Met up with a friend here on his recommendation. As his wife had asked him to bring home leftovers, we intentionally ordered a lot. They were not especially busy as it was mid-week and was raining. Service was good and attentive though - we didn't have any service issues like some other reviewers noted in previous reviews. The wine menu is not "extensive" but it is pricey. There were very few bottles priced less than $100, and many priced way higher. We ordered the bone-in ribeye, the smoked short rib, and the duck with mac & cheese and mashed potatoes for sides (again, to make sure he had enough to take home). The ribeye was perfect. It was tender, cooked correctly, excellent sear crust, and seasoned appropriately. The smoked short rib was good, but had been braised to the point that it was more like a roast beef. I smoke these "dino ribs" at home, and while there's a huge difference in technique between BBQ and this, I was not expecting a roast beef. The duck was okay. The cherry sauce was outstanding. The mashed potatoes were uninspired. The mac & cheese was really good. All in all, I don't think I'll go back. I recognize restaurants are trying to overcome the difficulties of the pandemic and that there's a "manhattan tax" but I didn't feel there was a good price to value ratio here.

Suggestive place, the bunker of a former bank that is transformed into an elegant restaurant. Excellent food. For Thanksgiving we ate an excellent turkey, and a perfectly cooked filet. Medium-high prices. Super recommended.

Found this restaurant by chance and we were not disappointed. It was my sister in laws 50th birthday meal and we shared the Porterhouse steak- it was the best steak we have ever had! The staff were friendly and attentive we would not hesitate to highly recommend.

We normally would not eat this nice before a sporting event, but we were in town for our honeymoon. Everything was great, atmosphere, super friendly service, and great food. I recommend the mushroom side. The specialty cocktail I got was also excellent. Prices in line with typical steak house dinning/NYC.

A group of us went there in a whim and we were all amazed how lucky we got! The food is spectacular! My steak was perfect and i loved the carrots (they’re special) I also highly recommend the marscapone cheesecake. Everyone in my group loved their food and cocktails. They make a great dirty martini plus their wine list is well curated.

Oh my god what a meal. Steaks cooked to perfection. 4 different steaks all cooked differently and yet served at same time all perfect. Bread to start was amazing with the onion butter. Would recommend sides split between 2-4 people. Was on the expensive side but we'll worth it

The food is good but you're paying for the setting which is the inside of an old vault. It's cool. And pricey without the food really earning the sticker price. It was good, absolutely, but not extraordinary as the prices would make you expect (a bit over salted, don't let the bread get cool because it loses its charm, the chicken was good but no better than I make at home, the filet was done perfectly and the flavor was excellent although I personally would have performed more of a crust on it). The staff was great though and it was an experience we were glad we did but would not repeat.

Business dinner - superior fine dining. The steaks are large and meant to share. Also, ordered the sea food cold plate; oysters; shrimp; calamari; etc. Good selection of wines - made my martini perfect! Highly recommend for all occasions if you are looking for fine dining. My only complaint is that if you sit in the vault it is noisy and kind of compact.

A fantastic dining experiance, the food, ambiance and service were great, we were seated in the vault and had a perfectly cooked Tomahawk steak. The service was above exceptional, Nestor, Hector and ledion were outstanding, excellent attention to detail and service throughout . Highly recommend this establishment.

This is such a cool concept to have a dinner restaurant inside an old NYC underground bank vault! Food is delicious and service is impeccable!!

We ate here in connection with we stayed at The New Yorker Hotel, the restaurant is located in the basement, decorated in an old safe. Good service, good wine, and good steak as well as accessories - a bit expensive, but all worth it :-)

Absolutely loved this restaurant. We went here on Valentine’s Day weekend and truly had a unique and romantic dining experience. The atmosphere and decor are beautiful. It was very exciting to be able to eat inside of an old bank vault. It was nice to be able to enjoy a delicious private meal, where we could actually hear each other speak and did not feel like we were sitting on top of the table next to us. The TOMAHAWK RIBSTEAK for two was delicious. It was cooked to perfection. We also ordered the mashed potatoes and the asparagus. Portions were large and we had no room for dessert.Service was excellent as well. If you want a delicious meal in a one of a kind setting this is the place for you.

My wife and had attentive but non-intrusive service at the Butcher and Banker...along with a well prepared steak dinner. Our meal was everything one would expect in a 1st class NY city steakhouse with classic decor and a quiet ambience for being in a converted bank vault. I recommend this restaurant for anyone desiring a great dinner with excellent service in a unique setting....

Came here before a Billy Joel concert at MSG. Concert started at 8 and our reservation was for 5:45. Upon arrival, we were sat immediately at out table in the Vault, which was cool. Service started out great with our drink order and the delicious bread. We were advised to order out appetizers and entrees at the same time to make sure we were ontime for the concert, which worked out great. My wife got the Lobster Bisque which was some of the best i ever had. The portions were great too! She could have easily had that just for her dinner. I had the caesar salad which was also huge and delicious. Our dinner was came out at the perfect time. Not only were our steaks delicious....but they came out PERFECTLY COOKED. My wife got the filet special that came with fries so we did not get another side with it. CONS: -So after dinner, as the restaurant started to fill up, we noticed the service start to struggle. Even the table next to us had to inquire about their drinks that they ordered 20min prior. The waiter gave an excuse that the bar was backed up. We finished our dinner and planned to have another drink or even see the dessert menu but our plates stayed in front of us for too long and we did not have time. -For a high end restaurant, it was not a pleasure to share a bathroom with the diner next door. Alot of people off the street used this bathroom while we were there. -And finally, I kind of shocked to see the quality of menus when we sat down. They were folded, stained, pieces of paper. Applebees has better menus...very gross. So other than those 3 cons, i did enjoy the food and the proximity to MSG. Wine list was great and probably will come back

This is great place for a steak and drinks. The decoration is well done and they have great music selection. The food was amazing and our waiter Jorge was the best!

A+++ Very pleased with this place. The waiter was excellent, food was excellent. The best steak I have ever had. We shall return!

Compared to other high class restaurants, atmosphere (no stylish interior) and final touch-ups of the steaks&sides were average. Service was excellent.

I had my reservation there last night for 8 people for my boyfriend's birthday party. I come there, they tell me there is NO reservation. WHAT??? They said it was not in the system.... Unbelievable. I called for the manager to explain how this is possible. There was no explanation from him whatsoever, the only response he gave me was he had no idea what happened and that they cannot accommodate our party there. But what threw me off the most was his nasty attitude, raising his voice at me (at the customer, really??) and not willing to figure out the situation - what happened, how come the reservation was not in the system. NO apologies, it's crazy! Just kicked me out of there!! WOW! I had been to this restaurant a few times before and I made a reservation there based on my previous experience which was fabulous. However, after the scene last night with the nasty manager, I am not going to that place ever again. It doesn't matter how good the food and drinks are and a great atmosphere, if customer service is suffering so badly, it's a huge turn off. You can find so many other places where people treat you with great respect and do care that you come back there again and leave excellent reviews. I felt like this manager was very unprofessional in handling something that could have been resolved smoother and people like him should not take managerial positions when they don't know how to treat customers with respect and handle issues.

From the start staff seemed to be annoyed, not sure why as we are very friendly and the place was almost empty. At 10 the waitress just grabbed our half finished drinks and placed a bill on table. Was not aware the restaurant closed so early but would have been accommodating if the situation had been explained.

We had a very good dinner here to celebrate a birthday. It was a slow night and we sat in the vault area which was a nice touch. Service was good, and attentive. Steaks were delicious and cooked perfect. Full bar and nice dessert menu. I liked the ambience, tablecloths and old classic feel. Relaxing evening and dinner.

Birthday meal out for the good lady while visiting NY. Something a bit quirky and different. Drinks before meal at bar, just a vodka and cocktail was $30. Expect to pay more in NY but still!!!. Meal was lovely. no complaints there but be advised you have to pay extra for sides after paying top whack for main meal.

Conveniently located opposite Madison Square Gardens, this restaurant is situated in an old bank vault with the original circular door still there. So a great location, great ambiance

Thanks Juan Miguel for the wonderful service. Food was excellent and sitting inside the old vault is great. Smaller than many steak houses and far more personal

The atmosphere is upscale but not too stuffy. My medium rare steak was cooked medium both times. (I would expect a steak restaurant to get the basics right.) Overall a good experience and would go again.

Having dined at numerous steak houses throughout the City I was happy to give this one a chance. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out as planned. Previous reviews mentioned dining in a vault, what this means for this restaurant is that you are dining in the basement of The New Yorker hotel. Yes, you are eating in a former vault where on one wall were the safe deposit boxes, while on the wall across from it was covered with sound deadening cushioning. A plus to keep the sound level down, but the bright flower print didn’t match the theme of the restaurant. It was very easy to note the wall covering because, especially for a restaurant, it was very bright in the dining room. The wine list left much to be desired. One thing I noted was a lack of champagne. The wine by the glass menu had a couple of choices, but no full bottles listed. When I asked the server, he was able to come up with a bottle of Veuve yellow label. A wine that retails for about $55. This was the best they could do. When ordering red wine, I had to aske twice followed by the server bringing the wine list back to confirm what I had ordered. Also, something to which I am not accustomed. The service was functional at best and not very welcoming. As a matter of fact, we felt rushed. Which bothers me when the check was nearly a $1,000 for five people, before gratuity. The server seemed surprised we were planning on having a four-course meal. At times the water glasses went unfilled, and we had to ask for water. During the meal, for all the courses, not once were all the plates brought to the table at the same time. After paying the bill, over $1,200 with gratuity, the server said thank you as he quickly walked by the table, never to be seen again. It was the food that the was the most off putting about the experience. Maybe we should have seen this coming when the first appetizer listed on the menu, in a NY steak house, were mini tacos. Not that I have anything against tacos, but this is the first time I have seen them front and center on a steak house menu. The New York strip was cooked according to order temperature, but for the same price as other steak houses, it was about half the size. The steak was maybe an inch think. I finished the steak without a problem. Something I have never done in any other NY steak house. The Ribeyes were not the best I’ve seen. They were thin and not worth the money. The filets were just okay. However, given the NY steak house prices, all paled in comparison to other restaurants. Even the higher-end chain steak houses. In all the other steakhouses I’ve dined, the side dishes were large enough to feed numerous people. Here not so much, again for the same price. Given the number of other steak houses in NY, I’ll continue to visit the ones I know are good and give new ones a try. This one however, was a one and done. Sorry, but the food wasn’t worth the price paid. I have spent much more than I did here on a meal, but walked way happy. The only way to describe this meal was overpriced and under delivered.

We were here on Tuesday April 12th for dinner - me, my husband and 13 year old son. We had reservations & sat in the vault. Our server was excellent & friendly and the atmosphere is very cool. My son & husband had the filet and I had the chilean sea bass. We also had the calamari appetizer. The food was excellent although expensive, but it was our last night in the city, so it was worth it.

Arriving after a tough work day and waiting for my train, I went up the street for dinner. The restaurant is located in the basement of the Wyndham Hotel. The location is a former bank vault and beautifully decorated. The bar is very comfortable with plush seating areas and roomy tables. Service was excellent throughout the meal. The oysters were fresh and pristine with two interesting sauces (not traditional). The NY strip perfectly cooked and delicious and the mashed potatoes fresh and comforting. Drinks were perfectly poured and the restaurant has a good well-chosen wine list. And the bread in a small cast iron skillet is particularly good. I recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Penn Station area and would return.
Nothing spectacular. Subpar
The food here was pretty decent but the experience my boyfriend and I encountered within the first 5 minutes of sitting down was very uncomfortable and disrespectful due to what seemed to be the manager or owner. My boyfriend had on a baseball cap and once the waiter seated us rather than simply asking him to take it off, the manager then walked by and began loudly repeating “BASEBALL CAPS, BASEBALL CAPS” over and over. Then came over and feigned politeness and asked him to take it off. After that he stood a few steps from our table and began to chastise the waiter for not enforcing the rule and spoke with him for over 5 minutes cutting into our being served. We sat there and overheard the manager speaking about it for so long which was very unprofessional. Besides that? I counted over 3 other guests that walked by that definitely were not dressed for dinner in an upscale restaurant at all. Worn down Uggs, jeans with massive tips and holes in it etc and yet nothing was said to them. The rudeness was ridiculous to say the least. For someone who wants so bad for people to look “classy” coming into their establishment, the class and respect on his end surely wasn’t there. I do not recommend this place if you don’t like being judged and chastised simply for your outer accessories. Horrible person to have as the representation of this restaurant. My waiter, Chris was very pleasant and patient however I will not be back! Hire better management who have respect.
