Just ok

By Autumn M |

The rooftop is nice. The drinks were just ok. The food was Ehh. The pork belly was horrible. No flavor all fat. The enchiladas is just ok. The best thing was the empanadas.

Good service, blah food

By DogMom159 |

Decent rooftop space, although they don't have any of the nice views that other rooftop places in the neighborhood have. The drinks are good but the food is not memorable. Everything seems lacking in taste and needed to be doused in hot sauce. The staff is attentive and efficient. I'd come back here for drinks but not for the food.

Dinner and Drinks

By Bobby T |

Food was decent but not the type of view I expected. The building is not very high up and the walls block your view so your mostly just looking up at the sky and can't really see any of the surround areas.

Delighful Surprise

By Jaynyc2 |

A friend and I were in the area, all the way on the west side of Manhattan, looking for a place to have dinner. Finding ANY restaurant in the area near 11th Avenue is not an easy task. The restaurant is listed as Cantina Rooftop on TripAdvisor but is called Rooftop Forty8. We arrived without a reservation but that did not seem to matter. We were seated fairly quickly. It seemed a bit long before our order was taken. But in all fairness from the time we sat down until our order was taken, the restaurant had filled up. Every table was taken from that point until we left. We ordered a total of 4 dishes. ALL were excellent. Portion sizes were very good. The dishes are based on Mexican dishes but I wouldn't call the 'typical' dishes. Fortunately a descriptions are given. The only thing that held me back from giving this restaurant 5 stars was the wait service. When we had our server's attention, she was absolutely wonderful. She would spend time with us. While we appreciated that, she would also spend a good deal of time at other tables as well....with her back to our table. Getting her attention for the dessert menu was a task. I literally had to grab her arm as she was flying by our table. I would definitely return to this restaurant when in the area. Be warned that the dishes are somewhat pricey. Not over the top expensive, but it does shade to a bit to pricey for Mexican style dishes.

Perfect for hot summer evening!

By catherine0002016 |

Great place, booking easy, fun funky food really really good and quick friendly service. Went on work team meal as was perfect! Great fun decor and views not too formal so you really relax. Very good value too.

Dont do it,

By Monique d |

Very loud and The food was not Good. We took A guacamole but it was without taste. The taco’s were not better. We paid $100,- for bad food ( and 3 drinks).

Mexican Evening overlooking NY

By Mr. X |

Nice and sympathetic experience, very nice place overlooking the skyscrapers of NY. Skulls, colors, umbrellas everywhere, typical Mexican music, mariachi singing among the tables in short, a classic Mexican restaurant with a beautiful atmosphere. Good quesadilla, enchiladas and tacos. Burrito's only for lunch. Fair prices.

Delicious food, great rooftop view of NYC

By Barbara H |

My friend and I enjoyed our fresh colorful dishes--jicama salad, chicken enchilada and shrimp tostadas made with high quality, fresh ingredients. The skyline view was lovely, enhanced by the night sky. Definitely recommend if you are in midtown.

Cantina is a vibe

By Traveler860_203 |

Cantina rooftop was a great vibe. We made reservations the day before and enjoyed a Sunday before a show at MSG. Cantina is a vibing place with Latino music people dancing and great attentive service. Cantina has an ok menu for food but great drink choices. We ordered the dorados (shrimp tacos) and a beef short rib taco. Both were pretty good but would say excellent. The scenery was really cool and people were having a great time. I would definitely recommend it and return

Sunset at the Cantina Rooftop

By Abigail G |

The waiter Christopher was great & gorgeous ... The Afrodisiac was awesome... The dishes were beautiful & delicious. (Mild guacamole, Trio empanadas, tuna taco, & mayan shrimp ceviche)

Eat fast and get out

By Alex W |

This rooftop cantina feels authentic from the decor to the music, the food is well overpriced for what you get but it is delicious. Unfortunately, the staff we dealt with while there wasn't the best. They were rude and it felt like we were being rushed to eat so fast that we couldn't enjoy the food. We barely broke in to the apps before the entrees were on the table and they were trying to clear the apps. They also include gratuity in the check without any forewarning which is always a scummy move; in this case especially given the level of service we received.

Good service

By Eleonore |

Good service from Andres . Very nice and welcoming server. Music a little too loud, guacamole good Nice view..............

New year on the Rooftop

By KirstyF352 |

Amazing views, what a way to take in the New Year! Great DJ and danced the night away. Went back on our last night, drinks very expensive but the ambiance makes it worth it!

Great atmosphere... Goofy DJ...

By Dickens C |

Food was good, drinks were good, perfect weather... DJ was extremely engaging, but poor music transition

Brunch on the roottop

By vlsoares1 |

Our first time at the Cantina. It was on a Saturday and was surprised to find they were only serving a brunch menu. That is usually reserved for Sunday's. Because we had gone out of our way to try this place, we stayed. They had mostly just breakfast food, which was just ok. The prices were average as was the food. Our servers was very nice and was also attentive.

good food, friendly staff

By Barbara C |

This place was handy, as it was within walking distance of our hotel. The food was good, the staff were friendly. It was a little packed in, but that's my only criticism.

Good food , lots of fun !

By Besuza |

My wife and I like to try new restaurants in NYC. We loved Cantina !! The food was very good , the marguerita's were great , and the ambiance was fun. We gave our waiter carte Blanche and we were not disappointed! You definitely have to try this place. Cheers!! John and Nina

Music is deafening

By Petra L |

Bring earplugs with you if you're going here and the food is worse than at Sibylla Okay service but the sound level here is terrible with music so loud that we can't talk to each other

Cozy atmosphere

By Regina C |

Great atmosphere, good food and friendly staff. Well eaten. Highly recommend it. We were there around halogen and the restaurant was decorated.

Beautiful space. 4-story climb

By RightField |

Great guac. Great views. Indifferent staff. Easy to miss on street. And that 4-story climb...Worth it for a drink and the guac.

Average food truck food with above average prices and poor service

By foody411 |

If you are looking for blaring hip hop music with a live DJ yelling at you while you eat average Mexican food with no red salsa, then this is your place. The staff is so unfriendly and unhelpful. The food is not traditional Mexican, it has weird twists like BBQ sauce on Quesidellias, really? Very few veggie and gluten free options. Guac with oddly crisp chips will be $15 with no salsa. The drinks are good, but the music is a 10/10, so loud you can not talk and makes your ears hurt. I'm surprised they can stay in business with their way of borderline rude staff and mediorce food. I would spend you $$ elsewhere. They also blair their wedding music until 12am so if you are staying at Hotel Ink 48 nearby, be prepared to hear it in your room.

Great food! Nice view

By Indewealthe |

We were staying across the street at ink48. Attached view is from our room. Roof slides open. There was a DJ, but not too loud in the dining area. Wait staff were very friendly and helpful. Guacamole were great! Pork and quesadillas were better than typical mexican. Easy to run up a bill as the drinks were amazing too! Definitely recommend!

My favorite Mexican spot in NYC!

By Latifah A. |

This place is amazing..so lively and full of energy! I came with a friend for dinner and drinks and it exceeded my expectations. They had an amazing singer (who has been on America's Got Talent) and a phenomenal musician performing while we ate. Dinner with music and views of the city...what more could you ask for? After their performance, the indoor area of the rooftop turned into a mini club with all of the best reggaeton hits playing. The food was amazing and the staff were very kind. I can't wait to go back!

Gluten free options

By suehay34 |

Dined here Friday night. Great atmosphere and music. Attentive service and what was even better they had a lot of gluten free options which was great as my daughter is celiac (Gluten intolerant), after picking items on the menu which indicated gluten free within an hour my daughter was very ill. Future diners please double check with staff if you are gluten intolerant.

Nice location with a tricky bill

By Giacomo C |

Very nice location, good food and good service, I was deceived by the tricky bill. The tip is automatically included in the total but, when signing the credit card standing in front of the cashier, there is an empty space for the tip, which leads you to add it to the total you see (again!). When I got to the hotel, I checked the bill again (as it seemed too high) and realized that I had left 40% tip (20% added by the restaurant +20% more). I believe this is kind of misleading for the customers.

Great nachos!

By Alelinpet |

We went for a friday night dinner and it was a lively place with loud music and live singing. The place have a dancefloor and everything you want for a dinner, party and dancing. I ate the the nachos with chicken, and it was very good and a lagre portion. You could easiely share the nachos with one

A bitter Delusion...

By bakakashi |

We had dinner in this restaurant since se read many positive reviews about the food and the location. Therefore, as said by lots of people, the sight from the rooftop was amazing and the atmosphere awesome! However the tables are very old and damaged, without cover. The food was really bad, especially chicken tacos. We also orderes Guacamole that was full of pieces of fruit! Se left the restauran very disappointed ad the waiter Force us to pay 20% gratuity adding it to the subtotal of the check...That's dishonest! We will Never come back Again, good location bug deludent food.

Double birthday celebration

By Cabulihan |

September 2019 birthday celebration is worth to remember. It was a happy get together for our family. The Tacos tasted delicious but my family's laughter reverberated even days after. The waiters are really friendly and very attentive. It is a happy place to eat.

Great atmosphere but limited views and unsatisfactory service.

By GDB |

When we were sent up in the elevator we entered the rooftop to a great buzzing atmosphere for a Saturday night, however the waitresses seemed a little stressed and it projected onto all of the customers so they really do need to put more staff on the busier shifts as it is unfair to them to have to be running around and forcing a smile. The food was great, I definitely recommend the mac and cheese and the sweet and spicy Brussels sprouts, they were lovely! The menu also seemed to cater pretty well for vegans/vegetarians. If they sort the staffing issue they will be onto a winner.

Excellent Everything

By NYAnge53 |

First impression: Very nice staff member at the elevator. Then elevator door opens and "WOW" very attractive restaurant inside and outside seating. Very attentive staff, especially the manager. Bartender was friendly and personable. Food was delicious, attractively displayed and server was well equipped to handle every menu question. Views were outstanding. We went on a Wed. evening 5-8pm. It was not crowded, we were never rushed, the music was slightly loud but we were able to hear table conversation.

Absolutely an AWESOME restaurant

By Mustravel_365 |

I don't think people should even look at the Google ratings as this place is absolutely AWESOME. Very friendly staff, super great atmosphere and food is outta this world delish This should be a NYC bucket list visit 👌

Awful service at the door

By Katariina P |

Absolutely horrendous doorman. I am surprised if he ever manages to get anyone to the actual rooftop restaurant.

Fun vibe/ missed some details

By Stephanie J |

Such a fun vibe. Music set the tone of a lively lounge rooftop. It seemed like an ad of a typical rooftop summer scene. Guacamole was great. Minor details. They forgot the olives on my body Mary along with silverware and napkins. I was thinking that the drinks weren't presented well. Then I looked on other tables and saw the beer and margarita presentation was spot on. It must have been my bloody Mary that was overlooked. So I'd say if they want to earn ALL the stars then they should pay attention to some minor details even if it is busy brunch hours. Didn't make us feel welcome as guests esp for them to have forgotten our silverware & napkins. Also the food proportions are smaller then I would have imagined. However, everything else was superb and I will go back esp with a group of friends. The food was very tasty. I'd just like restaurants to pay attention to the small details. That's what makes them really stand out.

Horrible Sunday

By Jennifer M |

I'll start by saying it's a great set up and ambience. We went on a Sunday, and was forced to have brunch even though it was 3 o'clock in the afternoon. They don't offer any cocktails on Sundays besides mimosas and bloody Mary's. You're stuck getting off of a brunch menu which is very small and $35 per person. After it took two hours for the food to come with no exaggeration, I would say the food was less than desirable. Both are orders were supposed to contain over easy eggs and both orders of eggs the yoke was completely cooked and the egg was overcooked itself. I have to say this was probably the worst $35 I had ever spent on food. We both left feeling hungry and annoyed. The place was busy, but not busy enough for them to not be able to cook eggs in two hours. I cannot speak to how they are on a regular day, but I certainly would not suggest going for brunch or on a Sunday in general.

Not worth it!

By Merethe B |

We booked a table for four persons, 3 months ahead. When we arrived we were met by a service minded person. He wondered if we really got a booking for 9 pm, since they turn the restaurant into a nightclub at 10. We showed him the confirmation we got, and he sent us up to the rooftop. The person who met us there should be sent to a etiquette class. Rude as hell, and not the kind of person who should be in contact with customers. Long story short. Our table was no longer available. No explanations, just a stupid shoulder shrug. I would NOT recommend this place! The least you can expect when you book a table, is that the table is actually there. Not put away to make room for the dancefloor.

Worst place for drinks

By maids01 |

Was the worst gin tonic I have ever tried. Bad michelada even worst margarita. The attention was good

Won't rocks your socks off

By Pandalena |

Thankfully the 'exclusive club vibe' at the entrance of Cantina Rooftop doesn't carry upstairs to the restaurant. At the entrance you are greeted by velvet ropes and a bouncer-type man. Once you exit the elevator the vibe is relaxed. The modern Mexican inspired decor of this restaurant is what I enjoyed most. The food was very good - I recommend the El Diablo guacamole and the tuna al carbon tacos - however, it wasn't exceptional. Presentation of the food was great. So if you're the type to spend more time photographing your food (for Instagram or Snapchat purposes) than actually eating it, this is a good spot for you. The rooftop is nice in terms of decor but it doesn't provide as scenic of a view as other rooftops. It also felt very crammed. Service was poor the night we went- our server was very pleasant but it took a while for us to get a round of drinks, and it took multiple attempts to get our bill! Eventually the manager came over to our table because we had been sitting at a cleared table for over 20 minutes waiting on a bill.

View?

By 15108JoJo |

Based on the photos online, we went to this rooftop restaurant and bar. The roof top is the 4th floor...not very high for NYC. And the view was lacking. Very disappointed.

Energetic rooftop hotspot

By Mike R |

We went for dinner on a recent Friday night. We specifically wanted a rooftop restaurant and La Cantina fit the bill. We couldn't eat outside due to the rain but it still felt outdoors with large windows and an open air feeling the translucent roof provided. The food is creative as well as the presentation. We both had a shrimp dish and they were well prepared and very good. If you like spicy (hot) pepper taste added to your margaritas then drinks here will be perfect. Being from out of state we were not accustomed to having spice added to our drinks. As a result they went mostly unfinished. Other than that surprise our overall impression is very good. The scene is vibrant and energetic, mostly a young crowd. This is not a place for a quiet romantic dinner as the noise level is fairly high. This is mostly from conversation not the music. Background music had a latin flavor and not played too loud. I would rate this restaurant a 4 out of 5.

Terrible food and service

By Chabrro |

We have never had such awful tasting Mexican food. We ordered chicken tacos, nachos and chicken enchiladas. The chicken tacos were rubbery and bland with some unidentifiable taste. There were scarce chips in the nacho appetizer but they tasted ok. The chicken enchiladas in no way tasted like enchiladas and had a weird odor.Service was no better and it was not busy on this weekday night. Go somewhere else.

Great spot!!!!!

By Mayuya69 |

Ok, let's be honest. Everything is expensive in the city, but this place is worth the money (it's not WAY too expensive). The portions are great! And so is the ambiance! Great view, awesome service! Go check it out!

drinks

By Alexis S |

Lots of other places we should have picked for a few drinks and chips. After seeing the picture online I put it on my list as a must visit. My husband and I had margaritas and chips with guacamole. The roof top is very pretty and a great idea. The margaritas had almost no flavor and were small. My plastic cup was cracked. Our guac was pretty good but the chip were pita chips out of a bag. Not even tortilla chips. To make thing worse our bill came to about $85. The table next to use even walked out after not getting waited on after about 5 minutes. Don't waste your money.

Wonderful View

By BrianKavanagh |

this relaxed roof top bar is the best way to see the night lights of New York. Staff were friendly and helpful. This bar has a great atmosphere and re markedly it was not that busy when visited in September.

Don’t go. LOUD techno music, blah food and mandatory gratuity.

By Joel0917 |

Warning: loud music. You can’t hear your table mate talk. So loud that the waiter misheard our order and brought us the most expensive item on the menu and was like…oh I thought that is what you said. And the amount of happy birthdays with loud whistles on top of the loud club music and I mean LOUD CLUB TRCHNO MUSIC at 7pm. Guacamole had zero taste. And worst..:tip is automatic.

Great views

By Christine H |

Fun drink stop with amazing views of the NYC skyline. It's pricey, but the view and vibe are worth it.

Nice Views

By A5982 |

We had dinner there. Views were nice. It turns into a club at night so music is very loud. Hard to hold a conversation over the music. Foods decent but pricey. Service was OK. Took about 10 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order and that's only because I waived them down. Not because they stopped.

Rooftop Mexican

By Sean C |

I am always a sucker for rooftop venues in New York. Cantina Rooftop did not disapppoint. Interesting array of cocktails - I had a Smoky Margherita which was spectacular - and I can imagine after work drinks being very festive here and going down well with some delicious snacks. Guacamole and corn strips were great as was the charred octopus. Mexican lamb shank was beyond expectation - delicious and melt-in-mouth tender. Very pleasant and attentive service. Look forward to going back!

Amazing rooftop dining and lounge area

By Betsy B |

Just reopened under new management, servers and hostesses. Beautiful area above the noisy streets of NYC. You are admitted downstairs by a doorman and then escorted up the elevator by one of the hostesses to the upstairs area. We had to change our reservations to a bit later and they were not sure if they could fit us in. It is a small but beautiful space. The hostesses Carmen, Stephanie and Julie made us feel comfortable and did their best to try and accommodate us even thou we added a 5th person. And They did it! Delicious food. I had the street corn appetizer. The best dishes were the Yellow Fin Tuna Tostadites- yum yum and the Campestre Free Range Roasted Chicken - ( we had the mole sauce on the side as we are not fans of mole). The chicken was so moist. There was a lovely outside and inside lounge area. The manager came by several times to see how everything was and if he could help us further. Pricey but excellent! Must have reservations!

Really cool rooftop with nice view - Mexican cocktails and food

By Serra1907 |

Cool place at the Meat packing district. We came across it after where we wanted to go was closed due to a private event. The cocktails were nice, the food was tasty, portions huge. The terrace had nice city views for photo.. We liked it. Would advise if you are in the neighborhood.

Great people watching

By Honest, and frank |

The food is good. Service is not so good. All the waiters constantly look busy. It’s hard to get someone’s attention. Then when you do, it takes a while for them to deliver.

A buzzing place

By Janette B |

Really enjoyed the vibe here and were well looked after by we assume the manager. Service good. Enjoyed the food and would definitely go back

Drinks with a view

By David N |

Sure this is inside a hotel but the view is amazing. We were staying at the hotel and decided to grab a drink. The beer costs 11 dollars and a cocktail is 17. Once you have dealt with that shock sit back and enjoy the NYC skyline. The bar is classy but not stuffy. Great place for a drink.

Avoid at all costs

By Hemant |

Wow…what a gimmick/rip off of a place. First I walked to the entrance with a reservation, had to pay a $60 cover charge from the front guy who was skimming off the top (the guys name was alex). Then the food and drinks weren’t even close to sub par at best. To top it off they had clowns walk around to take picture of you at dinner and then have the audacity to put the picture back on your table during dinner and demand money for it. Not only that but the guy selling the pictures chastised me for not buying them. Avoid at all cost. In fact just burn your cash. You’re Better off.

Awful staff

By Simon Cox |

Friend made a reservation here to catch up while I'm in town. Despite the fact we arrived on time, they wouldn't seat us until every member of the party was there. While trying to explain that I had a flight to catch so we would start ordering anyway, the woman WALKED OFF MID CONVERSATION. I've never experienced such a rude interaction with a person who's job it is to talk to customers. Avoid this place like the plague.

Avoid if Under 25yo!

By Joanna H |

The only way to enjoy this place is to be under 25 years old and/or arriving already intoxicated and ready for a big night out. You are 100% paying for the "ambience" and so you need to be sure this is the kind of ambience you want and worth the other costs. To start with, it is poorly run and difficult to navigate. The door man was slow and rude and did not give us any instructions on how to get to our table. If your reservation is on the rooftop, you need to take the elevator- but not all the way to the top floor- and then someone on the main floor will walk you up another flight of stairs to the roof. Unfortunately, there is no signage and we were early in the night so not a lot of people around to ask questions. Once we got our table, we immediately were uncomfortable with the loud music and club-like atmosphere (I mean, it was 6pm!). It didn't help that we were seated right under a speaker but I am not sure moving seats would have helped a ton. It was so loud we couldn't carry a full conversation the whole time we were there. From the get-go, service was incredibly slow, which was odd because there seems to be dozens of employees milling around (although hard to identify who is a server and who is a busboy as all uniforms are the same). People will make eye contact with you, eye your empty drink and keep walking. This is especially anxiety provoking when you've been told several times there is a strict 90min limit and honestly, with the loud music all we wanted was to slam a few drinks so we could loosen up but that was close to impossible with how slowly we were able to get our server's attention. When it all finally came, both the drinks and food were good but nothing to write home about, and certainly not worth the high prices they're charging. It didn't feel like there was a lot to choose from either and typical things like sour cream have to be requested (and salsa doesn't exist here??). There is certainly no city "view" to speak of, so don't expect that either. TL;DR: Service is horrible; Food/Drinks are just OK; ambience is very loud and "club"-like, so come prepared for that (aka- already a few drinks in). There were a lot of young birthdays and bachelorettes around and I could see where this could fit the bill well for something like that. Otherwise, honestly, save yourself from a headache and eat at literally any other Mexican place in the city.

Amazing

By Hector |

Great food, just enough to not feel full and gross but still great. Waiters very friendly especially Emily

Good rooftop in HK

By rbravo |

I ended up at this place as the rooftop I was planning to go was closed due to a private event. I did not have high expectations but the place turned out to be good. It is an ok rooftop if you happen to be in HK and want something relaxed. The views are not bad but there are better options.

Mediocre at Best

By Julianna |

The view is average, only the 4th floor so not high enough for spectacular views. The food is also pretty average. It’s a nice space but the music is deafening and ruins the atmosphere. If you’re looking for a relaxing, peaceful brunch this is not the place.

Nice ambiance but not good value for money

By mariavoyer |

I went to this place for a Saturday brunch . I was running late for my reservation so I called to let them know I was on my way only to find the person who took my call so rude and un friendly . So we get there and the place has a nice vibe, there was a DJ , so we were ordering and asking questions to our waiter about the menu and he goes: “if you are not ready I’ll be back later” and just like that he left us while we were still talking to him. We were just about to leave but we decided to forget about it and enjoy the meal. Then we ordered. The food was ok, nothing special , just fine. But when the check came we couldn’t believe it: $65 for a pitcher of margarita, which was good but give me a break , this is just ridiculous !!! Then $17 for guacamole and chips!!! I’m sorry but in my opinion this restaurant charges prices that don’t go with the service and style of the restaurant , I mean they serve the drinks in plastic cups and the food in melamine like plates . The good thing about this place is the view and the ambiance but other than that it’s way too expensive, service is mediocre and the food is just ok.

Amazing!

By Diana D |

The food was super yummy! Nothing fancy and a small menu but I highly recommend the nachos! Also if you're looking for a strong drink get the margaritas! What an amazing view, I can't wait to go back!

Nice dinner apot

By AmyTheodore |

Came here for dinner one night in the summer and it was great. Not much of a view while you’re seated but perfect for a hot summer night. The frozen cocktails were great and service was quick. The food wasn’t that tastiest Mexican ever but great atmosphere.

Views to die for

By Kate H |

Breathtaking views of city skyline and Hudson day and night. Usual drinks and lovely staff. Very dark outside space - watch your step as lots of low furnishings.

Father's day ruined

By JessyCarrillo28 |

We had a reservation for father's day. The place was crowded, the restaurant was closed and they sent the people to a nextdoor night club (stage 48) because it was the soccer match. When we asked for our table, they told us that they were overbooked and honored the reservation I made. The staff was unnecessarily rud with all the customers. Never back there again.

Best guacamole ever!

By Terje Bernhard L |

Good atmosphere, good food and great view of midtown Manhattan skyline Fantastic guacamole (best ever)

Girls city day

By Debra Hayden Barrett |

We made reservations here in hope of a fun experience. The staff, food, service was all good. It had been raining so originally the roof top was closed. Big disappointment! After a few pitchers of Margaritas the rain stopped and all walls and roof disappeared. Fun music, dancing, lots of people celebrating and enjoying a night in the city. The menus has a variety of choices. Our guacamole was too spicy and they generously replaced it. You must see the “ Big Ass Taco” and watermelon adult beverage! Be careful climbing 4 flights of steps, the elevator is broken ! The view isn’t great from all angles due to crazy construction but we had an awesome time and the place was packed.

We had a ball at Cantina!!

By Deborah S |

The atmosphere, food, service and music were awesome! Our waiter, Seratin, was so friendly and helpful!! We had a ball!

Never Again!

By HeavenTheQuaintrelle |

I'm so disappointed! Cantina Rooftop was my choice of the Dinner Spot for my friends & I this past Sunday. I made a 5pm reservation for 6 people earlier that day. We arrived and upon entering the elevator to head up to the rooftop, we were asked if we had a reservation and what name was it under. I figured that was weird but I told him anyway and headed inside the elevator (thinking maybe he'll communicate it to the Hostess upstairs). The elevator door opens and we're kinda looking around at who would greet us so we can approach them. (I've been a host for years so I know you're supposed to greet the guest upon their arrival). Well, NOT this Hostess, she was looking at us like "Can I help y'all with something?" in the sarcastic way. We approach her and she asks if we have a reservation, so I tell her my name and she guides us to a table right on the bar. We asked if we can sit at another table and she said they were all reserved with a MAJOR ATTITUDE. So, we wouldn't cause a scene at this beautiful establishment, we just sat down to enjoy our meal. The server was THE BEST PART OF THE NIGHT. He was extremely kind. Whyyyy have Happy Hour if those sitting at the table for FOOD as well can't enjoy it? It's kind of backwards to have happy hour only for those who are in the lounge (that doesn't sit 6 by the way). Over the course of about 4 hours, we spent upward of $300 on drinks that were amazing but DOUBLE priced and food that was mediocre. 3 of us got the Shrimp with Rice and the scoop of rice was the size of a cupcake, The guacamole was so amazing, I ordered it twice But the beauty of Mexican restaurants is their generous proportions. Cantina didn't get that memo! Oh and those tables that were "reserved" so we couldn't sit there, were empty that whole event. It's safe to say I'll never be here again!

Fun place with music

By jessica schuindt |

Great service, fun place! Food follows the propaganda. Pleasant and happy environment. I felt safe in the environment.

Terrible Experience

By Jim G |

Terrible experience. The restaurant was late opening and they still weren’t ready when we were finally seated. Service was slow and when the food arrived it was awful. I had Carnitas Eggs Benedict. The eggs were cooked through and the carnitas was dry and crunchy, likely left over from the night before. And there were chunks of fat they called pork belly. After the horrible meal their sales system went down so we were late for our next adventure. I can honestly say this was the first bad meal I had in NYC.

Highs and Lows

By ROBERT I |

Seeing many mixed reviews is always a tell that there are highs and lows. We had a good visit. This is a large venue on the roof. Good space for large groups of friends. A fairly young crowd with many tables of 8 to 12 getting together plus normal twos, fours etc. The midday weekend menu offered up tacos as a good choice. Short on a good enchilada choice, my normal pick. We tried the chicken and steak tacos. Two good choices. We liked the Mac and cheese. Decent white sangria but short on fruit. The service is adequate, not great. The pricing is not timid so you will realize that this is expensive Mexican food.

Craving for rooftop happy hour?

As Newyorker we always love happy hour drinks and snacks. This place is highly recommended to visit during spring/summer... food was excellent and drinks are undeniable.

Lively Atmosphere aimed at a Younger Clientele

By 589MichaelP |

Brash and loud. I enjoyed the cocktails but not the plastic glasses. The staff tried really hard to please but much of the merriment was staged to the extent that they looked fed up with it after the 4th round of singing happy birthday to guests wearing sombreros and shaking maracas. Good views but only 4 floors up. The food was average. Good for larger groups.

Not as expected

By Eddie |

Tuesday (early June, around 6pm). A little difficult to find the place if you aren't familiar with the area. We hadn't a reservation, so we were waiting in the bar (3rd floor) for about 15 minutes, the bartender was nice. Then, we went upstairs to the Rooftop. The staff weren't attentive. Since we were waiting for a few minutes to be seated, we just ordered a beer and a margarita. The city view was nice, but not as I expected. We founded our visit unpleasant. Prices were too expensive to me. However, the food seemed to be delicious and people seemingly was enjoying it.

Great pulse

By Michael L |

Younger crowd inside on the small dancefloor with eating done outside with a great view. Interesting food.

Great Surprise

By LindaG456 |

Had a UrbanDaddy certificate but will go back without one. Great small plates and amazing tequila tasting. Our server was great and the view (though the outdoor patio was closed is great. A small cozy place for a casual meal.

Empty

By FelipeGargiulo |

Totally Empty for a saturday night. The music is good and The place quite good, but just with few people: Beer expensive!!

Wonderful staff.

By kaisajade |

I was expecting amazing food because I knew it was small portions. I don't think it was worth the money. The view was not that great either. Maybe I was expecting too much because everyone was giving 5 star reviews. I don't get why. The servers are very friendly and excellent though. I will give them that. Especially the guy who served us water. I wish I got his name but he was awesome and helpful. I think the place is overhyped.

Amazing food...

By Chris C |

Terrific setting and fewer finer places to enjoy Latin inventive food i have enjoyed. Rapid deployment of a sturdy roof cover as rain threatened put to rest any fears we had of being drenched as rain threatened, but it was a far nicer atmosphere with the cover off. Food was sensational. Creative, flavoursome it has lived long in the memory. Only the service was poor. We felt rushed, harassed and pounced upon every few seconds that it wasn’t relaxing. I would go but be ready to ward off over zealous staff.

My Complements to the Chef!

Great food and nice drink selection Friendly staff and Talented bar staff . Fun for a night out on the town with friends Awesome views!!!

Impressive!!

By Liqitup |

Great view and very relaxing even on a chilly night we sat outside where the lounge has the plastic curtains that protects you from the cold & wind.

Young crowd

By Willem K |

Tough one to rate. Food was pretty mediocre and although it didn’t seem too expensive, it is when you realize you need 2 entrees to fill up. View was OK and so was the atmosphere, although I’d like them to turn down the music a bit - I couldn’t hear my table parents half the time (and we were only with 4 of us). Plus was, yes, it’s still a rooftop and it attracts a young crowd of fun folks.

Plastic glasses and tiny plates

By Stephane D |

I went there with my girlfriend, and if the service was ok (even though the information received by phone about opening hours were wrong), everything was not as expected... First of all, the glasses were all in plastic, which is not so good for drinking champagne or fancy expensive cocktails... Second issue, the plates of food are tiny (very very tiny). We ordered a cheese plate and we had 1/10 of 3 varieties of cheese with some dried fruits). Nevertheless, the view is amazing and we had a really good time.

Excellent view and drinks!

By Zaluski |

This is a great place to enjoy the Big Apple's Skyline at night. You'll be a little bit away from the crowd but close enough to enjoy the colors of the lights and the skyscrapers. I went in a cold rainy & windy night and there were no tables outside, but you can go and watch the Hudson River on one side and the city on the other. It's not too expensive and the drinks were great. And the best part: it's free!!

Great!

By lindseyypaigee |

My boyfriend and I went here last night before a concert in Central Park. Chris our server came over immediately to greet us! We ordered chips and salsa which were very good but very hot for my taste! The frozen margaritas were very very good and strong! I ordered the hanger steak with yuka potatoes and charred asparagus, it was honestly so delicious. My boyfriend ordered the roasted chicken which he loved as well. Not your typical order for a Mexican restaurant. The atmosphere, the weather and the music were all great. I was a bit disappointed at the view. The website raves about their city view, all I saw were concrete building right in front of us and no skyline view. Still had a great time!

Don't bother if you want good food

By Michelle V |

Service wasn't good and the food was eatable but not great at all. Happy hour drinks only available if you're at bar, but not sitting ordering appetizers and dinners. Ambiance was cute but not worth going to. I'm sure there are other Mexican rooftops that actually serve good food with service.

We will be back

By Cara L |

I went here this past weekend for brunch on a Living Social deal that I had purchased while it was still Z Bar, so I was a little unsure if the voucher would be honored. Rest assured, they honor the vouchers and then some. The voucher included a basket of pastries, a carafe of mimosas, bloody mary's or bellini's and our entrees. They also threw in coffee as well. We had bellini's and had a choice of peach or mango. They were good. A bit sweet, but good. The pastry basket gave enough for each person to have 2 pastries. I ordered a burger for my main dish and my bf got the omelette. We were both very happy with our food. The burger was enormous! I couldnt finish it and the waiter told me it was a 10oz burger!. The omelette was very fresh with lots of fresh veggies and came with homemade home fries, also loaded with veggies. My bf ended with a coffee which I skipped. He also got a refill, neither of which we were charged for. The view is nice and you hear the cruise ships sounding off now and then which is nice too, makes you feel like you're on a mini vacation even if for a short time. The wait staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. We'd love to go back for dinner one night. The only drawback is that its located in a fairly remote part of Manhattan, right off the west side highway, the only way to get there easily is to drive or take a cab. The prices are right even without a deal. My burger would have been $15 had I not had a deal.

Good Ambiance

By Terence T |

This place has great ambiance and that's what you're really paying for. You can get the same quality of food elsewhere for a lot cheaper but its a rooftop in the city so you know what you're getting into from the beginning.

Amazing brunch

By SuzieQ6578 |

Was a bit skeptical when we were told we had to walk up four flights of stairs to the rooftop. Atmosphere was amazing! Mamisos were delicious! Food presentation was stellar. Was afraid I wasn't going to like any of the food as all mexican. I ordered the french toast thinking I couldn't go srong, right? It was fabulous and mouth watering. My mouth is still watering just thing about it. Absolutely amazing! We had a great time! Would go back again.

Could this have been any worse?

By Rosaleen F |

This was recommended by a blogger as a great place for food and atmosphere. It was awful. The place is cheap and way overpriced. On arrival, you’re thinking this can’t be right. You get in the lift to the reception area and a hostess takes you to the next floor. You’re thinking it can only get better. It doesn’t. It’s an outside space with rickety tables and banquette seating that puts you about 6 inches below your fellow diner across the table who is lucky enough to have a chair. Food is overpriced and mediocre at best. Plastic glasses are not acceptable at this price point. Noise level was ear splitting and so you couldn’t hear the waiting staff and conversation with your dining companions is impossible. Avoid this place. There are so many other, much better alternatives.

Great place and a cow

Serafino gave absolutely wonderful service. The umbrella ceiling and the view is beautiful. Drinks are strong. Will go again. Serafino is a star. Also come to find the cow :).

HELL in Hells Kitchen

By Ron F |

Atmosphere and roof top setting is fantastic. Food is average at best. Staff is rude and inattentive. Service is slow. Food is cold. Overall a waste of money. Considering the other great options in Hells Kitchen

cool rooftop restaurant

By larosa46 |

Let me admit right off the bat, we were 35 years older than anyone else in the restaurant. i guess it is a club after dark( the first clue was the gigantic man in a suit at the door checking reservations before allowing us up into the elevator). But we were just looking to go out to eat at a rooftop restaurant in the city. We had been helping our daughter move apartments on a very hot sweaty day and i did not want to hassle with deciding on a restaurant at the end of it. so i made a reservation here. i had read the less than positive reviews but it was delicious! Very friendly staff, but very loud music. which is what most of the customers were looking for. I had a ginger margarita which was spectacular and we shared a few appetizers. we also ate the tuna tacos, ribeye tacos and the shrimp tacos. all excellent! the atmosphere is fun, the rooftop is very cool and it was a terrific choice for us.

Great views

By norchas |

Crowded and loud and no tripods! It could be wonderful if it were less crowded and a bit quieter. A great place to have a drink at sunset.

Unbelievable view!

By Linda B |

We had limited time but made sure to squeeze in a visit to Rooftop 48. It was spectacular! The view is absolutely amazing! The cocktails are great and the atmosphere is very intimate. A must see if you're staying at Ink48 or even if you're not, make the time to have a cocktail at Rooftop 48 before you leave New York.

Mexico on Manhattan's Boarder "Tourist in My Own City" by Jodie Gould

By Jodie Gould |

On a far west corner of Manhattan’s Hell Kitchen off 11th Avenue at W. 48th Street, sits Cantina Rooftop, which offers not just a view of the midtown skyline, but an array of modern Mexican delicacies from master Chef Gonzalo Colin and Mezcal libations. Great for after-work drinks and a pre- or post-Broadway Mexi-nosh for tourists who want to dip their chips in a carved bowl of guacamole next to New Yorkers. The lounge, bar and dining area is open year-round due to its retractable roof. During one visit on a beautiful fall evening, I had a pomegranate margarita while my husband chose one of the Cervaza de los Meurtos (beer of the dead). If you come in a group, you can share a pitcher of specialty cocktails like Tapache (Becardi Superior Rum Pineapple Punch). Highlights of food samplings included the shrimp cerviche; corn empanadas with mushrooms,Serrano pepper and a dollop of mozzarella on top; duck tacos; and a bread pudding and pumpkin cake for dessert. Cantina Rooftop is proving that Hell’s Kitchen can cook up some heavenly delights.

DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE

By Ashliey L |

⚠️I've lived in New York all my life and I'm used to going to all kinds of restaurants but this was the worst service of my life. I made a reservation for 9:30, we got there at 9:10 and from the moment we arrived they told us that they close in 10 minutes. . and I'm like I have a reservation for 9:30. They have no education at all, the waiter Maria and the manager were even drunk, they were bad, bad service and then they tried to take advantage of the check by overcharging, horrible place. I don't recommend it at all.

Amazing views & good bar service.

By Jennifer M |

It's often rented out - the night we stayed, it was rented for a wedding, so at first we only had access to part of the bar (indoor), but they open it up to guests after a certain time and we had full access to the rooftop outdoor part, as well. Amazing views of Manthattan at night, good bar service despite being crowded at times from the wedding

Believe the bad reviews

By RocklandKris |

First, the menu is available online so I can't complain about the prices but I will anyway , as others have said, it is overpriced by A LOT and the portions are small and the food quite frankly just isn't that good. The guac was decent and the chips. The music is SO loud you can't hold a conversion with your dinner people and there is zero view with the rooftop because of the high walls. The staff was friendly however a $60 tip built in probably was too much. It was my daughters birthday but I did not say anything for fear of how much their birthday to-do costs as we saw at least 6 birthday's while we were there. Avoid avoid . Tito Murphy's is a good Mexican place in the city. Maybe I am not cool enough for Cantina Rooftop but my 25 year old family seemed to agree with me.

Good time

By Zariel2003 |

When on the classic Cinco de Mayo and had an ultimate great time . Drinks were strong, food was good , very simple place and although it was raining it must be nice when sunny . I want to thank Daniela, Esperanza, Victoria for their patience and kindness despite my friend running a bit late they were very hospitable in their behavior towards me and my friends , which was nice . Also kind the hostess downstairs. ( sorry forgot name ) staff servers were fun and kind . Would definitely return and even if not coming for the food which is decent / good Mexican casual be sure to come just for DJ dancing vibe . thanks Cantina :) Churros was fresh and yummy

Excellent Mexican cuisine

By suecassel |

Our first trip to NYC since 2019 found us looking for rooftop restaurants, and this one looked enticing! Upon arrival, we waited in a socially distanced line and took an elevator (divided in half with a glass partition) to the roof, where tables were also separated by partitions. And at 5:30, the restaurant was FULL!! It was a little loud, but it definitely had an energetic vibe. And the food was really, really good.

No

By trav226 |

Came here to discover the roof is now enclosed fully in plexiglass with no air circulation other than a small opening in the roof, which is not safe enough IMO. And the hostess despite many empty tables wanted to seat us right next to other diners. Also there was a dj blasting music which made it hard to even have a conversation. And you have to walk up 4 flights to get upstairs. So we left without eating. Perhaps after there is a vaccine I’ll give it another try in summer when the roof is truly open.

Food poisoning

By Marta P |

We got Food poisoning in this place! My husband and I were here on Thursday night, we had some tacos, a chicken dish and a margarita. Food was ok, the drink was awful, place didn’t look the cleaniest and the vibe wasn’t a real NYC rooftop atmosphere, reggaeton pumping too loud to even talk during your meal, nothing classy and nice about this place, plus the views are not that great in comparison to other places. Anyway, the real problem was when I woke up on Friday with awful stomach cramps, body chills, fever and the worst diarrhoea. I’ve spent the whole weekend sick in bed. It’s Sunday and I still can’t keep anything in my body on top of the horrible cramps I still have. I’m 100% sure I got it there, my husband got it too and it was the only place where we shared our food. Awful experience and it has ruined my whole week now.

Mexican dinner in the middle of the dancefloor

By Aussie0804 |

To be honest - we weren't impressed by the loud music from the DJ, the food wasn't the best Mexican we have ever tried, drinks were strong and boring - the atmosphere was top notch - funny to experience the non stop entertainment from the staff - but we will not be back, too loud, too pricy...

Worth a visit

By John D |

This one is off the beaten track in Manhattan but good value and worth a visit. It's not the easiest to find as it isn't at street level and requires you to take a lift to get there, but it has a roof top location with retractable roof. It's Mexican style.

To be avoided.

By Jeanne D |

To be avoided. Despite a reservation, we waited 1 hour for no table to be available 10 minutes before closing time. If you are 30 years old, you are not welcome.

Disappointed

By Abigail |

Getting a reservation and seating is not a problem and the venue is gorgeous but, the quality of the food is poor. It was very bland and cold but the good thing is that it came out quickly. I wish though that for a popular place with a very known executive chef, they can improve on taste and quality. We were jammed and crowded around other people, and also rushed to order and eat so other persons who have reservations can come to eat as well. I don't think I would be going back anytime soon.

Enjoy some great music and excellent food

By Coastal07010930404 |

Great location, excellent atmosphere if you are looking for a fun night out. Dont go for quiet conversation as the place is so lively and entertaining. Food was delicious and the cocktails were amazing! Real value for money but make sure you have not eaten prior to going as the portion sizes are very generous. Also has a wonderful sunset view!

Average

By Sandy T |

Expected more given the number of Mexican restaurants in this area. Portions were on the small side which made our meal seem a bit pricey. There was an overpowering taste to the steak fajitas, other meals were nice but nothing special. Was raining that evening which meant the cover was on the roof, this maybe contributed to a rather flat atmosphere.

Nice vibe & food. Service, not so much.

By girlycheckin |

I rarely do reviews for my hometown. Usually just reserve them for places I travel to. But I had to do one for this place, partly because there's so little out there about it and partly because it was such an extreme situation. Went here for dinner with a group of colleagues last Thursday night. They've only been open for a couple weeks (since Cinco de Mayo) but they must have some good buzz going cause they were packed. The menu was eclectic but accessible. The food was really flavorful and beautifully presented. I ordered the Black Angus and while the steak itself was tough and overcooked, the rest of the entree (charred asparagus and a wonderful potato side) was really memorable. I didn't drink but the others who did absolutely LOVED their cocktails. The atmosphere and view was magical and would be five stars except the DJ was playing music WAY TOO LOUD!! We couldn't hear each other talk. I understand being so loud later in the evening (maybe) but this was happy hour/dinner hour. What really brought the rating down was the service, which I would give negative stars if I could. This had to be the most horrible service I've ever experienced. We were all just aghast. We started with some appetizers, including the guacamole trio (which was fab, btw). It took FOREVER to arrive. We could see others who sat down after us already getting theirs. Ours finally arrived, but then we had to wait another 10 minutes or so for them to bring us the chips! When the chips did arrive, there were so few... for a guac sampler? Really? The drink that one of my colleagues ordered was so late to make it to the table, that everyone else was already on their second drink. She was told that 'someone' kept taking her drink from the bartender. And then one of the entrees arrived a good 10-15 minutes after the rest of them. These were just some of the service issues. It was really a comedy of errors. I do hope they get it together because it's a really nice place to go for dinner and/or drinks.

Biggest scam in nyc

By Serena S |

Food was mediocre quality and the portions were skimpy. Everything was HIGHLY overpriced and you’re paying for the “ambiance”? The ambiance is your view of the H&M headquarters and nothing else because you can barely see above the building wall. Gratuity was included and not given to my server but the awful Dj and the photographer. Wouldn’t recommend or visit again.

last New York evening

By Jluc J |

leave Time Square for a moment, to find yourself in a rooftop not far from Hudson River, a total change of scenery, at nightfall a view of the illuminated buildings, it's quite simply the canteen. simple effective, if you're looking for blingbling it's not here. The only downside is that the music is a little loud for my taste.

Not my kind of place

By PatPilees |

First of all, it is on a rooftop, so 4 flights of stairs to climb. I was expecting a great view, but it really is not that fabulous. Their is a big building beside, so you don’ t see much. Very loud music with a police type noise going on very often. Service was ok.. really not more than that. Food was ok, not more than that. We had the pastor and the nachos. I did not like the margarita. Would definitely not go back

Great place, loved nice places to take pictures, the food is great and they are very friendly

By Nahiomi T |

Great place, I loved nice places to take pictures, the food is great and they are very friendly, I have to go back.

BAD REALLY REALLY BAD

By JL Palacios |

Avoid at all cost, there are SO MANY good places in NYC. Food is average, service is bad, forget about the Birthday Celebrations, really really below any expectations, and focused in empty your pockets... this place will dissappear if they continue trying to take advantage of their customers... Sad

Fast Delivery, Good Food

By SS |

I had a really good meal delivered from Cantina Rooftop the other night. It makes me want to go the restaurant, which is in my neighborhood, My partner and I both had enchiladas, chicken and vegetarian, respectively, along with rice and beans and truffle fries. Everything was fresh and still hot, even though it was cold and rainy out.

Great New York Experience

The food was wonderful and the view of the Manhattan skyline was amazing. Everyone was very nice and took great care of us.

Amazing view but average food

By lenstaetena |

If you've ever been a couple Mexican restaurants, then you know that for the most part, it's going to be a hit or miss with the food. As the name implies, I will say that Cantina Rooftop has an amazing view. Their food and service? Not so amazing. It's pretty typical. For the price that you pay for some food and a couple drinks, you'd expect it to be a top NYC eat, but nonetheless it is all average at best. We were greeted, but it wasn't anything special, and the enchiladas I had tasted like any other enchilada from a restaurant on the corner (the menu didn't give me many options either). I give the place four stars only because I have to say that the drinks I had (tequila) were pretty good, and of course the view was perfect. I can't lie and say that I didn't have a great time either. For the price, I would say that it's not necessarily worth it , but hey, if you have a couple dollars to throw then this might be your spot.

Very cool staff and night

By Magalie |

It was our anniversary and we had a little treat. But just for the Elote and the guacamole chipotle, you have to go! Was soooooo good... we brought back the chips... ;) The view is great, the staff very nice and cool... Great place for a great night!

Good food, nice event space

Good for couples and groups. A good option for brunch. Nice vibe; good food (not extraordinary). Good service.

Drinks and dinner gone bad

By MisterRubes |

This place was a terrible disappointment. Great rooftop with bad food, weak drinks, and terrible service!!! Save time and money. The manager thinks has an attitude on top of things. Avoid.

Fun restaurant and atmosphere

By lolly202015 |

Surprised at some of the bad reviews as we had a great time. We were late for our reservation but they still managed to accommodate us on the rooftop. Yes the music is loud but we quite enjoyed the 90s R&B and salsa-esque mix. (We are mid 30s) Food was fine, not amazing but perfectly good. It wasn’t cheap but we found most places in NYC to be expensive and you’ll always pay more for a rooftop. We only had an hour as we had a flight to catch but would like to go back to try more food and cocktails. It made us want to go out partying ha! Would I recommend to my parents? Probably not. Would I recommend to my friends, yes absolutely!

Dinner on the rooftop.

By Brian F |

My wife and I were visiting our daughter recently moved to NYC for college. We chose the Cantina Rooftop for location, rooftop views of he city and the positive reviews. We had a pitcher of margaritas, guacamole appetizer and three differing entrees. I had the bronzini, my wife empanadas, and our daughter tacos. Everything was excellent and the service was very good as the waiter did a good job describing the entrees which were not described in detail in English. We were a little disappointed in the views. Ok but not what we expected. That being said the food is so good we didn't mind that at all. We will be back when In NYC again.

Worth Checking Out

By Global Flavors and Journeys |

This brunch spot was worth checking out. The club like bouncer at the entrance checking ID was not a great start. We went at 11am when they opened. Thankfully, we were able to get a few good photos before it got busy. The service was good and food came out fast. There was a good selection on the menu. The music was loud when it started. Take advantage of the photo ops on the rooftop and the bar downstairs. There are a few fun ones.

As bad as it gets.

By nycnyuguy |

This is a rooftop restaurant that has somewhat of a view, but that's not reason enough to go. You could get a better view from your office or apartment. If you don't live in NY and need a view then there are better dining options with better views. This is just plain terrible all around. Its a bona fide tourist trap that assumes most people won't be back and because of that they serve just lousy food. Lousy food and lousy drinks. Also really bad service. The menu is limited, dated and possibly reads like a menu board from Taco Bell. I bet Taco Bell is better than the taco appetizer we had. Everything we had was not edible. To make matters worse the tables are crammed right on top of each other. It is cheap though but even with the low prices not worth it.

Good food, deceptive billing

By Karissa S |

The food was decent and the party vibe (loud music with dj, photographer) was interesting, but the bill included an automatic gratuity that was not advertised. The bill also had a recommended gratuity so when we asked for clarification the waiter clammed up and got a manager who rudely told us that most people don’t mind paying it. We said we’re happy to tip, we just wanted to have some say over the total and that the process was misleading. I guess they get this complaint a lot but benefit from enough people not challenging it so don’t bother to change their process.

Poor Service

By elizabete75 |

I went for a birthday lunch and we had 3 big tables about 40 guests. They had just 1 waitress to make the orders, which was super slow. I placed my order and after long time she come and had the wrong one with mushroom which i told her PLEASE DO NOT ADD because i don't like, so I returned. She told me would bring other one which never come to about 1 hour later, everybody from my table was about to leave I canceled my order. After when the bill come they couldn't do an individual bill and people could not find cash to pay. Maybe I was out of luck but the service was poor…Outside was freezing most of the guests was unconfortable we ask to turn ON the heat but NADA. I cannot say anything about the food since I wasn't able to eat after be there for almost 3 hours. Avoid if you can ...

Lovely food, even if the music was too loud.

By Tina M |

A lovely meal. When we entered I nearly turned round to walk out as the music was so loud. But once seated we were away from the loud music, but could have done with turning it down a bit. However this may be more to do with me than the restaurant itself. Very colourful. It was New York Pride Day so there was an air of celebration. The food was served and presented well. Delicious food. Would go back for the food. It appeared to be beside various night clubs so aimed at this market.

Cantina Rooftop Restaurant a very nice place!

Cantina Rooftop Restaurant is very nice, great food, drinks and service!!! Decor was fun as were the staff very attentive and friendly. The climb up those steps, whooooohoooo but you'll enjoy yourself immensely once you eat and drink!!!

Brunch Done Right!

By Andres C |

We made reservations and arrived for my wife’s birthday brunch. She’d been eyeing this place for a while after seeing it mentioned in several social media accounts. First, the decor is great. The floor you check-in at has walls covered in flowers and lights with “Día De Los Muertos” inspired decor throughout. If you decide to continue to the rooftop, you’ll arrive to a DJ playing a good mix of music, rainbow colored umbrellas above your head, and enthusiastic staff ready to get your drink and food order. We decided on a pitcher of passion fruit mojitos. It was very good, but on the pricier side. The pitcher was good for 4 decent sized cups. We also started with the Flautas de Papa which are essentially potato filled taquitos with a spicy and tangy sauce on top. We thought they were delicious. For our main course we had the Tres Leches French Toast and the Cantina Burrito. The Tres Leches French Toast was amazing! It wasn’t too soggy, the taste was delicious, and the berries were the perfect touch. You only get one oversized French toast so it won’t be enough if that’s the only thing you order. The Cantina Burrito was a nice size. Definitely enough food. I made the mistake of ordering a side of Truffle Fries. It doesn’t say the burrito comes with fries so don’t order extra fries or you’ll have WAY too much food. Drink and food wise, I highly recommend. The service was also great and they seem excited; definitely giving off the energy the music was giving us. Tips and Important Info: Be forewarned, it’s on the pricier side and with or without a reservation, you’ll be on a time limit. Reservations are allotted 90 minutes and walk ins are given 60 minutes. It’s certainly enough and they didn’t seem pressed to move us along either, but if it’s busier you may want to keep this in mind. It’s also important to know that you’re required to order a “full entree” which they define as an appetizer (for the table) and a meal per person.

Amazing views

By Carole B |

Amazing views. Has a lovely and very strong scotch watch the city that never sleeps. Beautiful environment

Horrible

By Jboogs326 |

Never going here ever again! Aside from the long line and long wait for a subpar place, the bouncers discriminate against patrons and then try to extort money to get in. Sorry, rather spend my money elsewhere!

Excellent staff and food

By Simon D |

I found Rooftop 48 to be an excellent dining experience, I had pre-booked through their online booking form and linked it to my Google account (first time doing this) and the booking was fine. The location is a little out the heart of Manhattan but for that you have delightful views of the city. The woman at the lift was very nice and showed us to our floor, the place itself is quite small but delightfully decorated with a few tables and fully stocked bar. We ate many different food such as the tacos, roasted peppers and macaroni cheese. All the food was brilliant and tasted very good, no complaints there! The waiter was very nice in explaining what each of the items are. It would have been nice for us to venture outside but it was too cold and pouring of rain, I would recommend this place in the Summer.

Okay, If you don’t want to talk

By Debbie S |

We arrived for a noon brunch to celebrate a friend’s birthday and were assaulted by cacophonous music presided over by a d.j., as if we’d stumbled into an after-hours club. Knowing there was little chance of conversation, and after a move to a different table didn’t help, we asked for the manager and requested the music just be turned down to a manageable level. (It eventually climbed back up again.) it was not a matter of depriving others of entertainment because there were not a lot of people there. Then the temperature was so sweltering—all eight of us agreed—that we had to ask that the heat be turned down. Now maybe this was all because the retractable roof is often open, but surely the management knows, or should know, how to adjust noise and heat. The food was ok, and the waiters friendly, but that was no compensation for the miserable experience. Give this one a pass unless you want to get drunk and make a lot of noise.

Great Vibe

Dined late on Saturday night as place transformed from restaurant to dance club. Great DJ and crowd. Great service and friendly welcoming staff. Food was some of the best mexican I've had in the city. Great rooftop ste up with views of the manhattan skyline.

Food is as good as the view

We came as a family (5) on a Thursday night, to celebrate our son's birthday. We were lucky with a perfect summer night weather. We started with 2 Guacamoles- plain and mild- presentation was beautiful, the mild had a nice sweet kick, but both could've benefited from a little more salt. We followed with three types of tacos oxtail, tuna and Mexican Chorizo- all were great. We also ordered the octopus and oysters. The octopus was tender, seasoned well and presented beautifully. The oysters were superb, perfect mix of briny and spicy. Our daughter ordered the chicken and enjoyed it very much. We finished with two desserts the chocolate mousse and the Mexican cheesecake. The cheesecake was definitely worth it. Service is very friendly but fuzzy, it did not take away from our experience- we will be back.

lucy cantina to be avoided

Food was cold, we all got dripped on as the roof leakes. The service was really bad, slow and rude. Also the restrooms were disgusting, none of the staff were interested.

Loved it, good vibe, great service

I came here with my 18 year old son. We loved it. Service was great, and food was delicious. Cocktails are a must. The view is amazing. There is a DJ so if you are not into loud music and lively vibe this is not for you. Would highly recommend.

Very Lively and a Younger Crowd

By RxDive |

Very Lively and a Younger Crowd with dancing in the crowded bar at 5 pm. Open air rooftop bar on the west side specializing in Mexican cuisine. Good tacos and average to good margaritas starting at $13. Wait staff was both pleasant and attentive. I will give it another try - maybe mid week when it may be a bit more sedate.

Couples diner

By Daisy |

The place is great, food was delicious. My husband and I came here for diner just the two us. Everything was great until I noticed a few days later that I was charged more than what my check actually was. Not cool they added extra tip even when I left cash at the table and signed my receipt.

DO NOT BOTHER

By Gosia L |

I made a reservation at Cantina for my husband's 50th b-day (and received an email confirmation). When we showed up at the time of the reservation Cantina was closed. Nobody bothered to contact us to let us know that our reservation could no longer be honored. Unacceptable. Will not bother again!

Dissapointed

By MMeyer1963 |

Don't go there. The food was oke but the music was too loud. You couldn't have a normal conversation at your table. Unless our reservation we had to wait for 45 minutes to get a table and at the table we had to wait over 30 minutes to order. It is a rooftap but we didn't get that experience.

Good Mexican food on a crowded rooftop.

By Jscinny |

Found Cantina through an article on “best rooftop dining.” The food and drinks were good. But the cramped rooftop on the 4th floor of a building surrounded by hi-rises left much to be desired. Great for birthdays, as many were happing around us. And the third floor room is fitting for a Quinceria. Meh.

Great View and Inventive Mexican Cuisine

I happened to be staying close by and attending an exhibition at Pier 92 --- so Cantina Rooftop was very convenient. That was extremely fortunate as the experience would have been worth a taxi (or Uber) ride. The Location... In Hell's Kitchen, so not exactly convenient for many visiting NYC, but even Hell's Kitchen has had a rebirth in the past several years with great restaurants and newer hotel chains. The Restaurant... What a cool place! Doormen at street level lead you to the elevator which you take straight to the roof. A portion is permanently covered and the rest can be covered if needed. If you have great weather, though, the Cantina Rooftop is a real treat. Incredible views of Manhattan (you can see the glow of Times Square) and the waterfront. Seating is comfortable with tables for two, four, or more. Also bar seating. The Service... Everyone that we dealt with were nice and enthusiastic. Multiple people were covering each other so you never felt like you were being ignored or someone was too busy for you. The only downside was the manager (or owner) --- among a pleasant and happy wait and hostess staff, he was the only one that seemed too serious (or angry?). Luckily we didn't have to deal with him. The Food... Was excellent! We started with the "El Trio" guacamole appetizer which came with three types of guacamole and a combination of tortilla chips, plantains, and chicharrones for dipping. Very tasty and a fun start. For dinner I had the trio of Barbacoa tacos --- flavorful meat and trimmings served on a house-made tortillas. My colleague had the trio of Seared Tuna tacos. We swapped one taco each to try them out. Delicious! The tacos may look small but they are so stuffed with meat they are very filling. We also shared a side dish of their Grilled Cornettess --- essentially small corn-on-the-cob dusted with spices and manchego cheese. The Downsides... Very few. Besides the manager's sour look, we did notice a lot of people waiting for a table (make reservations through Open Table!) and the beer list was not very exciting. So get the mixed drinks instead!

Highly recommended!!

We were here with 5 girls from Holland and the atmosphere was totally top. Great food and service. They're really having a party there. Definitely recommended if you want a nice night out.

We were here with 5 ladies from Holland! Nice place, good food and nice staff. And great music. It was a great night!

Nice but...

Nice place. Good food, relatively decent view. Music. Lots of loud people. However the people welcoming you outside the lift should take a course of good manners. That kind of spoiled the evening.

Parting @ Cantina Rooftop

By Ramon Lassi |

Overall, a very nice establishment!!! Seating is "first come, first serviced" and that rule is totally enforced. So, if you arrive early, then you take up as much seating area as you want and management can't bother you regarding that. We arrived by 5:00pm, and waiting for our friends to join us after work. They offer a wonderful selection of cocktails and food. You can have dinner, in a dining section of the rooftop and drinks over by the lounge or bar. Once they close the rooftop, it's "turned over" into a dance club and you can stay for that if you want too.

Not impressed with the service.

Tuesday night, not many people and had to wait more than 30 minutes for drinks. We had to move on to eat to another place. Music was too boring.

Dinner

By rques |

Mixed views of this place. We went as a group of 12 for dinner. Food - the fixed menus choices were limited but the food was really very tasty and everyone was happy with their choices for the starters and mains. Desserts were a little disappointing and not that great in terms of flavour but as the mains were generous in size in not sure we missed out too much. Service - this can be improved. Our mains were served before the starter plates had been cleared so that led to some chaos in terms of getting the food to fit on the table. This happened for every course - so service is not great on the clearing up. Ambiance- we went for 7:00 for dinner and drinks. Music was pretty good, no complaints really. Lighting was a disaster. Flashing LED changing lights were maddening and apparently not possible to stop. This was a major negative for this place. I think it's a bit confused as to whether it's a club or a restaurant when it comes to the night.
