No Chili for me PLEASE!

By Superlegalbabe |

Went with a New Yorker friend to Cascabel. I like the outdoor seating area outside. The atmosphere is casual chic. Unfortunately, there was a storm all of a sudden, and the covers for the seating area have holes in some of the places, and the storm was so severe that most people run indoors. Unfortunately for me, my dog was with me and I cannot go indoor! The food was not bad, it is tasty. Only that when I ordered my Puerco En Adobo, they did not tell me that there is chili in the dish, in the menu it just stated 'adobe marinated berskshire pork butt, cucumber, sauteed onion, tamarind, roasted garlic and corn tortillas. It was tasty, but my throat swollen up and I had pretty much lost my voice. So if you are sensitive to chili, watch out! I suppose I could return it to them and said I don't want any chili in my dish, then I will have to wait. I wish the menu stated clearly the dish has chili in it. My dinner companion stated that the Pollo Asado was good but it stated clearly that it has cascabel chili so I stated away from it. The Guacamole turned out to be the best dish for me that night. The Cinnamon Churros was good too. Oh! I would have loved the idea of Watermelon Basil margarita, but it does not taste fresh to me. For the combination of not stating clearly that the pork butt has chili and the no so fresh watermelon basil, they get a 3 stars from me.

Friendly Fun Fast Food Frenzy!!! Read the crafted cocktail board and trust us... your palate won't be let down. The smokey rosemary infused CASCABEL UES is my fave. Our Monday night visit was bustlin' and the staff didnt miss a beat... excellent tacos de carnitas, pescado, camaron y carne... highly recommended! Just go!

The Best Mexican Food On The UES

By STYLEONTHEGO |

Cascabel is a welcome addition to the Upper East Side dining landscape. Featuring a limited but well rounded menu featuring tapas like dishes served on small silver pans, all of which is served by efficient and very friendly wait staff. The drinks are made with very fresh ingredients. The atmopshere is festive, bar like, but the noise levels are manageable. A fun crowd and a great, "hip" spot on the decidedly stately Upper East Side. Who would have thought? We will go back and also try their sister establishment, Mahjong Dumpling House, two doors down.

Great cocktails

By TheTallestTraveller |

A lovely afternoon spent sitting in the sun, drinking some great cocktails. Service was okay, though make sure you sit at a table with enough seats as you won't be able to pilfer one from another table! Nonetheless a good spot and good drinks.

Wonderful fiesta hour outside

By Jedidja |

We stumbled on this place trying to find anything close to the Met (heh) and ended up there around 4:30PM on Friday. Grabbed a table outside where there was a very nice atmosphere and tried the chicken tamale and single gorditas - both amazing. The three homemade sauces at the table were a great accompaniment. For drinks, the house white is ok (i.e. not bad), the hibiscus margarita was interesting but not something we'd order again and the lime margarita was solid. My only regret is not trying their premium tequilas...maybe next time! The food prices are quite good although the drinks would be on the expensive side when it's not fiesta hour.

Great food

Food was yummy... we were visiting NYC, wanted Mexican dinner, this was really good! And the service was excellent, Lauren was a fantastic waitress, fun, helpful, fast, cool. She made it a great experience.

Good Food / Good service / well done

By ZAZA1998 |

We enjoyed our meal at Cascabel Taqueria East! Service was cheerful and efficient and dishes were tasty. Carne Asado perfect!! We spent 1 hour there taking our time and having a very good beer. Price is reasonable : 41 USD for 2 peoples with 1 drink each! If you walk close to the Cascabel Taqueria East, I recommend you a break there!

Three of us

By Carl R |

Our New York friend took us here. Small but nice, we ate outside on the sidewalk. Had 3 sangria X, 2 steak burritos, corn on the yummy cob, and pair of tacos., fish.... $81.66. Really interesting fusion food. I wish the fish taco were not deep fried but everything else was great. Highly recommend the 6.00 corn on the cob. Nice waiters. Expensive but very good.

Great Food & Great Atmosphere

By Nick S |

This is really a great place, especially for brunch. The food is very good, the drinks are potent and the atmosphere is fun and buzzy. A fun place to hang out for an afternoon or evening.

Bad service, good food

By Rachel H |

We ate here after going to the metropolitan museum. It had cute, bright chairs on the outside so we sat out there for our meal. It's very authentic food. The chicken is very spicy, the guacamole is fresh, and the sweet potato fries are yummy. Although our food was pretty good, the service was absolutely terrible. We got our guacamole appetizer AFTER our food had come, our waitress barely came by our table even though the restaurant wasn't busy, and she took forever to bring us our check. For three of us, our total came to $77 which was ridiculous for the type of food we ate. It's a decent place to eat if you aren't in a hurry and have a large wallet.

Worth the walk!

By Rhilee581 |

This place is featured in the Lonely Planet and we walked there after a morning in Central Park. It was definitely worth the 20 minute stroll. The food was sensational and the service impeccable. Great value too!

Better and fresher than typical Mexican restaurants; casual and unpretentious.

By familyinnh |

I've been here 3 times now and it has been very good every time. I like the outdoor tables much better than the noisy indoor bar atmosphere. The food is very good, but no substitutions. (My brother wanted beans instead of corn -- not allowed; once the food came, it made sense because these are composed plates, not a main, with sides of rice & beans like your typical Mexican place.) This is a very casual restaurant. The prices are pretty reasonable and it is frequented by people in their 20s and 30s mostly. Drinks -- alcoholic and otherwise -- are great. Food is served on metal trays which is kind of funky. Portions are reasonable, not massive. This is a fun place.

Margs and Churros

By mfireup |

Came during Happy Hour for $7 lime margaritas, and was pleased. The burrito was good, came with sweet potato fries & creme on the side. An odd pairing, and I wish the creme had been queso, but still good. The other style margaritas looked good, but I wonder why they didn't offer sugar or salt on the rim? The churros were pillowy soft and came with delectable dark chocolate sauce, but you only get 4 nuggets for $4.

Caramba

By ArmelJoly |

Cascabel upper east side is an excellent spot for a bite or more. Food is ok and the choice of cocktails is really nice. As usual, I spotted that there is always a table for you when you cross the door. A must have where you have pleasure to go and again and again.

Los Tacos Son Grandes y Buenos

By NYFoodDude |

Inventive, fun and worth a trip. Crowded, so be prepared to wait. Food choices available for the entire family, including kid friendly tacos. Margeritas were well done. We'll be back.

Terrific And Atypical Mexican on the UES

By annbury |

We have only had takeout here -- many times -- so can't comment on atmosphere, etc. BUT THE FOOD IS GREAT. It's not typical NY restaurant Mexican (if that's what you want on the UES try Blue Moon) but delicate, spicy and light concoctions of veggies, meat, and tortillas. Small portions of absolutely terrific and fresh food, notably the tacos, with really unusual spices and anything with queso fresco in it. Worth its rating, a real add to the neighborhood.

Unique food

By mango1908 |

The only reason I don't give this nice little restaurant '5 stars' is because the Margaritas are way overpriced. We had the fish tacos which were VERY good and some chicken sandwich that had a 'mexican touch' and was really tasty. Atmosphere is really nice, we came on an off hour and it was very quiet and cosy. Service was good too. Food here is definitely different than 'common' mexican burito-taco-fajita places. It's more creative and all the stuff we've tried and seen around us looked very fresh. This is a good option for dining if you are at the Metropolitan Museum. It's 15 minutes walking if you walk down 80th street and is definitely worth the visit.

My go-to for happy hour

By NYCJulieB |

Cascabel has delicious food and a happy hour that starts at 11 AM and goes until 7 - currently, with $7 margaritas in mason jars and interesting combos (watermelon basil, cucumber cilantro, berry hibiscus as well as lime - my recommendation is to pick your favorite and then ask them to make it spicy). Chips and salsa are fresh and reasonably priced, and I end up getting the sopa de tortilla with chicken virtually every time I go.

Great food and full of hot women

By MrCostello |

Well I came for some Tacos and stayed for something else. The food is awesome, cocktails are a good size and there was a continuous flow of upper east side beauties walking in the doors. Did I mention the food was good?

Michelada

By Samantha S F |

Awesome light Mexican delights '... dishes are light , not heavy. Michelada' safe the best in the city My go to place '

Not bad for lunch

By Tomberra |

We wanted to change our Thai food lunches to something that was not Thai but spicy. During our walks we stopped at this Mexican restaurant and ordered a pitcher with Sangria and to this a Carne Asada and Chorizo Burrito and had a good lunch. They had also the hot sauces which we added to our meal.

Can never go wrong with Cascabel

By findyoself |

Cascabel is one of my favourite Mexican restaurants in the city for its... Watermelon margaritas. Yes, I said it... they are incredible. It's one of those places you go because you've picked that dish that is always delicious. I've gone a tonne of times, and I always eat exactly the same thing. On a date or with friends, it's a chill place that is not expensive for the city and always good. Definitely recommend it.

Best UES Mexican.

By reviews000000 |

Delcious food and great service wrapped in trendy, hip ambience. One warning-portions are small; they are rightly-sized for lunch but you will want at least 3 tacos for dinner.

Solid food & service

By IggyMo |

Food & service are quite good & consistent. Large menu with excellent choice. Reasonably priced. Better alue & food than the upscale mexican restaurants in the area.

Yummy food...great cocktails too

By ro o |

Ad hoc stop here and well worth it. Just stopped for cocktails and had an amazing melon margarita. Opted for a snack and no idea what it was called but it was delicious. Great smiley service too. Definitely going back for a big feast of cocktails and food

Best Bottomless Brunch

By hytaca |

Cute luchador teamed restaurant with amazing tacos and amazing bottomless drinks. Server Danny was fast and warm.

Brunch was so good - thought about it for days!

By Cremer T |

This is second time here for us- second trip to NYC and had to come back-everything was so good! The corn on the cob was incredible. The tacos were great. Ate something off of everyone's plate- it was all so good even the pancakes were delicious! What a great place.

Great eggs Benedict

By Kelz812 |

Came for brunch and I couldn't have been more satisfied. The eggs Benedict comes in cornbread with chorizo and an amazing sauce, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Reasonable price and the waitress kept our drinks coming since we did the bottomless brunch.mall the drinks were great! Can't wait to go back.

Terrific Mexican - really great informal dining experience

By Michael J |

This Mexican restaurant was a real find. We had lunch whilst on a trip to New York - we were in the Upper East Side visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park. The walk to Cascabel Taqueria was slightly further than anticipated (5th to 2nd is more than 3 blocks...who knew?!) but it was well worth it. The menu is straightforward and for us it was pretty much a choice between burrito or tacos. I went for the vegetable burrito and it was a treat. Full of flavour, with lots of different vegetables, but a lovely hint of lime that made it fresh and not too heavy. We got great service and great value for money; as always, there were just too many other places to try for us to be able to return, but we would've been very happy to.

Great mexican, worth a trip

By Carrie W |

My favorite mexican on the Upper East Side is Mxco, but I went there and it was closed. So I ventured a few streets down and landed upon this crown jewel. although a bit nicer and not having nacho, this restaurant was great. I had the steak tacos which were really god. the tomato salsa was also good. The SWET CORN WAS BETTER THAN ANY OTHER I HAD HAD BEFORE.

Great food, fun atmosphere, nice staff

By glabanowski |

I went here with my family for a casual dinner the night we got to the city. The food served was very tasty, and they had some different but tasty drinks. The restaurant itself was tiny but it was a fun place that many locals go to eat. The staff was also very helpful and nice. The only problem with the restaurant was that the music was loud, but after sitting in the restaurant for a while you get used to the noise.

a good experience

By Ed G |

Wanted mexican and wanted to go to the met afterwords so saw this on nearby. The portions were small for the price, but it might just be new york city prices. I had the crab ball appetizer and that had a really unique and refreshing taste. Taco combo were just a little different to add some good flavors. The margarita's are pricey but VERY strong so are really priced fairly. I think the food is different enough that I'd definitely recommend it to friends if you are in the area. The staff was friendly, food delicious, and a good clean restaurant. If I could add any feedback to the staff I would do a better job of describing what the meals are on the menu. having a line of 'crab/corn/ ... / ...' had us not really able to tell the food would be like.

Good Food and Atmosphere

By EowynTravels |

I stopped for lunch and had the three-piece Carne Asada Taco at the bar. The food was good and the bartender was very funny. I'd eat here again. Very good value.

Good food, but...

By Bruno M |

I left Cascabel very disappointed with their service. The waitress looked somewhat not interested on helping, and annoyed by the fact that I was choosing only one taco. The taco was really good actually, but I'm not planning to get back.

Nice place with outdoor seating

By Sankarmukh |

We, a party of three went to this place. We didn't have reservation but were seated right away, The decor is interesting and the the service is efficient. We had burritos and one beer. My wife had some vegetarian stuff. The place is large and inviting. The check was of the order of $75.00 with tips.

Fun nice and good food

Authentic Mexican Food in cosy atmosphere

By Art-de-vie |

Cosy Mexican restaurant with friendly staff and excellent marguerita's. Food is nice but mainstream. The cosy atmosphere makes it worthwile a visit.

Fantastic!

By ashley m |

Was tempted to not write a review because I was worried this place would become overcrowded but they definitely deserve the credit. They have really great meal deals and a pretty nice happy hour to match. Tacos tasted fresh and the margaritas come in a variety of flavors. Pretty decent size space with outside seating. A definite must try- I'll certainly be back for unlimited taco mondays

Good but very overpriced for the portion sizes

By Marc H |

My wife and I went to Cascabel for dinner because of all the good reviews we read here on Tripadvisor. My wife had the Quinoa salad and she felt the few bites she was served were really good. I ordered the Baja fish tacos and again the two tiny tacos I was served were very interesting and very good. The problem was the portions were at best the size of an appetizer. A reasonable sized serving (neither of us are unreasonable eaters :)) would have been two to three times the amount that was served. The one actual appetizer we ordered is what outraged us the most. We ordered the roast corn for $4.00 and what we got was a teeny plate of dry and tasteless corn nuts. There were fewer than one would get for free at a cheap bar and nowhere near as good. I ate the few that were served only because I could not bear leaving them after spending the $4.00 they cost. We came in to Cascabel finding the place to be very appealing and left feeling ripped off.

Tasty small plates

By gioannou |

Great place for a light meal. The guacomole was delicious and so were the veggie tacos. Nice beer menu

Bottomless brunch drinks

By 112318evag |

Delicious. We ordered brunch food and selected to do bottomless drinks. You get 1 hr from when you get your first drink to drink As much as you can. The food was delicious and the service was great. Atmosphere was nice.

Delicious

By robcurtross |

I had lunch at Cascabel Taqueria East recently enjoyed it very much. The luncheon special is a great bargain and the rice and beans were perfectly prepared. Service is very prompt and very friendly, the decorations are delightful, and cleanliness is very good. I often walk by in the evening since the restaurant is near my companion's apartment building, and people always seem to be having a good time.

All you can drink brunch

By Gabe M |

Thats all you should know for the weekend. Amazing crafted drinks all you can drink for an hour. The food is authentic and wonderful, they have a great tortilla soup, fish tacos were great. More food than we could all eat some come hungry and thirsty.

Great Mexican Brunch

By Patricia M |

Had a nice brunch- great menu. They have drink specials in the afternoon too. They do have gluten free options on their menu. They have breakfast foods and lunch too. NIce bar and friendly staff.

Unique and delicious

By nationalbiscuit |

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this restaurant! It can be kind of pricey but it is very tasty. They have a great selection and great device as well.

Very rude service

By PeterPuck2013 |

Cascabel, in fairness, has decent food. Although it is at times inconsistent. I particularly enjoy the breakfast radishes as a side dish. I have eaten at the restaurant a dozen or so times, but on one experience in recent months we were treated so poorly by the staff that we will never dine here again. Our group was seated at an outdoor table for about an hour when our waitress approached us and declared that the manager had people waiting for our table and that we needed to vacate and move to an indoor table. This seemed very odd to us as we were still eating and drinking. About 10 minutes later the manager approached us with the same request (right after we had ordered another round of drinks). It was a very hot day with a strong sun, so we agreed to move to an inside table. The manager than informed us that she would place us on a waiting list, as all indoor tables were full at the time and there was a wait. She could not tell us how long the wait would be. This was the most bizarre request I have received in 30+ years of dining out in manhattan. We simply asked for the check and promised that we would never return. In fact, it was this experience that led me to register for this forum.

Tequila & Mescal tasting flights 👍

By Tim M |

The food is better than average, and the prices are reasonable and/or on par w/ high class taco's/fajitas. The house margarita was solid and strong, and comes in a 20 oz "grande" option. However the tequila and Mezcal tasting flights really made it a special night. For $30, you get 4 different flights to taste, compare/contrast. I was amazed at the difference in smell, taste and flavor from one tequila compared to another, as well as w/ mezcal.

Brilliant, brilliant food - excellent service

By naturals |

One of the best Mexican meals I've ever had - authentic tasting with a good choice for vegetarians. The service was exceptionally good (the barman even bought us a round). The ambiance was superb with Mexican wrestling masks on the walls and fantastic looking cocktails. 100% somewhere I'd go back to if I were in NYC again.

Excellent food, great place, great service...

By Steve C |

We wanted something quick and Mexican one day that we happen to find ourselves on the upper east side!! Happy hour is between 3-7 so get in for cheaper beer and margaritas and various small dishes. All that we ate was great with particular shout out to an awesome guacamole... Service was fantastic, great atmosphere. Certainly would return!!!

Great neighborhood restaurant

By triptee48 |

This place essentially has fancy Mexican street food. It's tasty, the service is friendly and it's not too expensive. The guacamole, roasted corn and tacos are delicious.

Good Mexican for the neighborhood

By Bookistan5 |

I'm not so generous with the stars because there are a lot better taquerias in New York these days, especially if you are willing to trek to Brooklyn neighborhoods - or other parts of NY - with large Mexican populations. Nevertheless, the tacos are good, generously filled, and fairly priced (2 tacos per order, about $8.00 each) Beans at $5.00 for a side dish are definitely overpriced, although they're tasty. And the guacamole was excellent. This is a great choice for a casual meal even if these are not the best tacos in town.

Depends on The Server's Mood

By Destination259072 |

We've had some really awesome service and a few really crappy times. They changed the menu on Cinco De Mayo despite assuring me several times that it would be the regular menu. They jacked up the prices of the drinks and made them super small. Great deal during happy hour/brunch - very over priced outside of those times.

A Solid Place for Mexican food

By Sankarmukh |

We a party of two arrived at around 6:45 pm on a Saturday. We did not have reservation but got seated right away. It had Mexican decorations and lot of TVs with sports on. It is also a fairly large place. We ordered guacamole as appetizer ($9.00). It was good but I had better elsewhere. We had vegetable tacos, 3 pieces ($ 14.50) and Al Pastor Taco, 2 pieces ($ 9.75). As sides we had Cebollina and Pickled Vegetables ($ 4.50 & $ 4.00). The sides were terrific. We also had 2 Ithaca Flower Power at $ 8.00 each, and one red wine at $ 9.00. The service is pleasant and attentive. I would go again when I am around Upper East Side.

Best Mexican not found on a truck

By hellokate |

Cascabel is delicious. You can't go wrong with any of their dishes, although I did once find GLASS in my margarita on the rocks. The manager didn't even comp our meal! If you're ordering take out or delivery, ask for the taco shells on the side, otherwise, but the time they get to you, the soft corn tortilla will be soggy and steam-logged. Also, 9 times out of ten when ordering guacamole for delivery, they forget to give us chips. Ok, this place is rather rag-tag now that I'm thinking about it, but the food is absolutely delicious and the atmosphere is lively. It's a rare gem on the Upper East Side. (Sip your marg's carefully!)

Wonderful delicious food, great service and quick too!

By Ashna C |

Pros: Friendly staff, yummy , fresh food! It's a great neighborhood hangout, with local fresh food. The pork tacos, beef tacos and the shrimp, are my favourite. The watermelon basil margerita is quite delicious too!

Great lunch

By robcurtross |

I have a delicious two taco lunch with a side of chips and salsa today. Service was very fast; cleanliness was very good; the crowd was very happy; and food was delicious. A good selection of craft beers served very cold.

Not-great Food; Over-priced; and VERY Rude Service

By ArgentineTraveller6 |

I have eaten here several times, and I always thought (i) it was a bit over-priced (for what it is), and (ii) the service isn't very good. But my friends seem(ed) to like the place, and so I've been there maybe 10 times. I will NOT be going back, and neither will my friends. This is why: Four of us showed up for lunch, and they put us at an outside table that could handle six or seven. We had NOT asked for a big table, but -- while there (it was a nice day) -- we communicated with some friends that were then "on their way" to join us. But we ordered drinks, and our "first round" of tacos and eggs benedict, etc., and told the waitress that we expected more people, and we ordered more drinks and told her that we planned on ordering more food. 45 minutes into our lunch, we were told that they wanted the table for a bigger group, and that we might be asked to move to a table inside. We said that we were soon-to-become a bigger group (indeed, another person had just arrived and ordered food), but we said -- essentially -- that if that's what they wanted, tell us when our table inside was ready and we'd move. In truth, the sun was making this particular table a little uncomfortably "hot" at this point, so moving inside was not such a bad thing, we thought. [I continue to point out, we're eating and drinking and spending money, still.] Somebody soon came over a said, "you gotta move," and then offered to put us on a "waiting list" for an inside table. "Huh?" we said. They said, "Yeah," with no indication as to when an inside table would open up for our now-seven people. We said, "Screw it; give us the check, and cancel the additional drink-and-food orders we had just made." [We ended up tipping the waitress a heck of a lot more than I wanted, but my friends said, "It's not her fault (that the restaurant management stinks)."] We all agreed that when people are spending money, ordering food, and etc., you don't (essentially) throw them out (unless they are drunkenly disturbing people, and we were doing nothing of the sort). And we all agreed that (i) we'd never been treated like that before in a NYC restaurant, and (ii) Cascabel had just lost some good customers (i.e., we're never coming back). I advise whoever has read this far NOT to patronize this establishment. They seem to think themselves too successful (I guess) to have to bother with treating their customers well. Edit Remove

Casual and Delicious

By DJMXX |

Stopped in for dinner with my college-aged daughter on a Wednesday night. I enjoyed a beer flight (4 4-oz tastings of different beers - all good - for $8) and two truly excellent fish tacos. She had the pork sandwich and sweet potato fries. They looked good. I'd definitely go back.

Awesome tacos!

By matsays |

Personally, this is some of the best tacos I've had in NYC. The platters are 2 per plate and if you're not a heavy eater, they're perfect - you can always add a Mexican sliders appetizer to round it out, or go for the double platter. Why so good? Attention to detail. They are messy - as they should be. The whole point of good tacos is to mix all the flavors and have fun eating them. For us, we had the fish and the carne asada - I thought both had some unique, surprising elements (olives, heart of palm) that added some zing to the base. They are served soft shell, traditional style, and don't suffer from the over-cheesed Americanized crap. And the agua frescas were great for us non-drinkers in the bunch. The only thing I didn't care for was the inside dining room - too loud, too pub-ish. However, the patio dining was great since it wasn't too hot out that day.

Awesome - BEST Mexican

Awesome food and a good experience Wasnt keen after what we call mexican in australia but i wish i could eat at this place every weekend. Will return when i return to NYC

The best taqueria . Love to eat there . Excellent food, excellent service and excellent atmosphere . Is one of my favorite places to eat in the East Side .

Great food and atmosphere

By Carolien v |

I visited Cascabel with a friend when on a trip to NY. The food is great and pretty cheap. Service very professional and friendly. It is a well cared for, cozy, and lively place filled with locals. If you prefer good food in a down to earth restaurant, I definitely recommend this place.

Authentic, amazing

By DCLNYCNY |

The new Upper West Side location is fantastic. I believe my kids and I were there the first day they opened (July 1st). Food quality was excellent- service was great, wine/beer list extensive, prices are very reasonable. Kid's chicken tacos are fabulous, the beef and fish tacos are out of this world. Going back again soon.

Delicious

I have lunch at the very pretty Cascabel Taqueria East today. Very good fish tacos, and excellent side of black beans. Service was fast and efficient. Cleanliness was very good.

The best neighborhood Mexican

By Mary Beth O |

This is my favorite place to go for some delicious guacamole, fish tacos and spicy margarita. I love fish tacos and this place always delivers the best. Anything I have ever tried there has always been so good! The atmosphere is always lively and it's a good place to go with family or a group of friends.

Great tacos and beers, clearly a local fav, too.

By Diosa18 |

My wife and I found the location easily. We had a choice of seats, both indoors or out, at 6:30 pm. The menu is limited to mostly tacos, but there is an extensive beer selection, with some wine and cocktails as well. We each choose different tacos; I had pork adobo and she had chicken. Both were excellent, spiced up to taste with sauces on the table. The wait staff was attentive and helpful. We enjoyed people watching in the outdoor seats. The indoor seating may have been loud with sports games on tv's.

Good small atmosphere

By OwlAdvisor100 |

This was a nice atmosphere in this small Mexican restaurant, very nice for outside seating on a sunny day. Service was good.

Nice & unique

Bar + Family Friendly

By Irene K |

I wish we had one of these back home. Great bar, and great family restaurant with tasty little tacos. Excellent wait staff. A quick walk from the Met, but not so close that it is a tourist trap.

Fine Mexican food UES

By F.L |

A fun place to go to, you can watch TV at the bar, or do some people watching al fresco, all this while eating some delicious tasty Mexican food. You will not find nachos here, or quesadillas, try their tacos, the macaroni & cheese, the corn on the cob and so much more... Rustic margaritas taste great in mason's jars, the spicy one is very spicy, beware!

Eclectic and yummy!

By NaturalOilMom |

This place has an eclectic menu with healthy options and a very yummy diversity of tastes. Fast service! We loved the Thai chili guacamole, and I had crispy shrimp tacos which did not disappoint. They were amazing! Our waiter was very attentive and polite. My husband watched soccer while we ate and I watched the cars go by on Broadway. The chocolate dipped churros were a great finish! Highly recommended!

Great food and service

By jniktrip |

Very tasty food, order a few to share. Excellent friendly helpful attentive service. Was a little loud for my liking for a lunch with friends, but the food still wins. Oh and great value for money too!

Cascabel has lost its touch

By tdcCT |

After living this spot for years, our last two visits have been extremely disappointing. The luchador salad is a shadow of its former self, under-seasoned and missing the fingerling potatoes that were so creamy. The tacos are now ordinary- they used to shine with a perfect balance of acid, fresh herbs and well cooked protein. Now they are more Taco Bell than authentic. Very disappointing. No quality control.

Great food!!!!

By david c |

I recommend going during lunch time. There menu has some very good lunch items. They have a lunch specialty which is the pollo chipotle which is the great tasting chicken and other ingredients on fresh sesame seed bun that comes from a local bakery. The service was very helpful and recommended great things. You could tell everything was fresh. I highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner if you are on the upper east side. I would definitely come back.

Good food, fun ambiance, but steep price

This restaurant was recommended to us, and as we all love tacos, we were quite happy to find our way to this place. I was surprised that the first thing we heard from the waitress was that there was a one-hour limit to our seating (not that we needed all this time, but we found that odd). We all got two tacos thinking it must be a large plate for the price advertised, but not at all! The tacos were truly excellent, but a 2 taco plate is certainly not a large meal (tacos were very small indeed), and will put you back a good 10$. In any case, because of the tasty food and the fun atmosphere, I must give this restaurant a 4 star, although I am not sure I will make my way to this place on my next visit to NY.

Great food. Perfect break from Museum Mile

We walked the couple of blocks to this restaurant after going to the Guggenheim and had really good food - which isn't so easy to find when you're travelling. The staff were helpful and attentive too. We had three starters and a main, and a couple of beers and it came to about $35.

UWS Cascabel Taqueria is GREAT too!

Honestly I think this is a hidden gem on the UES. It is hard to tell from the outside how popping it is inside, and that it is not just a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. The food was fantastic. I would absolutely recommend the guac -- they even brought us extra chips :) The only downer is that they don't have queso on their menu. However, they make-up for that by having a fabulous cucumber margarita.

Great find...........

Never had dinner here but we stop frequently for drinks and appys before meeting our daughter who lives on the same side street as the restaurant. Consistently good drinks. Margaritas are excellent. Bartenders are always spot on. If they don't ask first, make sure to ask for a taste if ordering wine to make sure your happy with your selection. And always good pours. We'll always be there if we have to wait for daughter to get home.

Best Tacos in Manhattan

Cascabel is just around the block from my apartment, and it spells trouble when I am starving with no time to eat. A menu too good to pass up, I've fallen victim to Cascabel's seductive ways one too many times. For starters, their drink specials are top notch (I advise you try the Oaxcan Sidecar), and their beer selection is the perfect balance of small-batch craft and big brand. Worth going in even for a drink to watch the Knicks not make the NBA Playoffs on their TVs or massive projector. The menu is unbeatable, especially because of the wide array of foods available. I love to eat things nobody else at my table would enjoy, which is why I regularly order their tongue tacos, and delight in the squirming of others while I enjoy my meal. An added bonus is Cascabel's unexpectedly superb weekend brunch. Not only do they use the greatest coffee mugs north of 42nd Street, but they serve the best eggs benedict I've ever had. Hands down. They also have what I refer to as an "egg scramble" which is basically what you would make when you were hungover in college: a few eggs with everything you could find in the kitchen thrown in with them. One thing that always bugs me: they don't serve singular tortilla chips. It's this CD-size circular disks that you break into pieces. Honestly, this is just because I'm neurotic.

Some things good, some things not so good....

We had the happy hour Chicken Taco, Steak Taco, Chicken Tamale and BBQ Chicken wings and everything was quite good, except the Chicken Taco, which lacked seasoning but was overabundant in small Chicken Bone fragments.... The Margarita was good, they had a decent selection of beer on tap and the service was decent.

If I had gone nothing but eat here on my trip to NYC, I would have been happy!

We tried Cascabel for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, and the joint was jumping with families, couples, and large groups of friends. Fortunately the owners have managed to pack an amazing number of tables into a relatively small space, as well as a stylish bar and also a dining counter. The decor is hip and colorful, with lots of vintage Mexican wrestling imagery and chalk boards that advertise drink specials. The menu is fairly limited in Mexican restaurant terms, and the choices offer unusual twists on classics rather than the classics themselves. I had the fish tacos, and I wasn't sure I would like the hearts of palm and olive garnish in them, but it was absolutely scrumptious, and was perfectly complimented by a glass of hibiscus iced tea with a slice of lime! I also had a cup of black beans, which was wonderful spiced with the three salsas in squeeze bottles on our table. My companion had a huevos revueltos, one of several egg dishes on offer, and he enjoyed it very much. The staff here was incredibly friendly and attentive, and our waitress as well as a couple of managers stopped by to ask how our food was, in a very nice, non-intrusive manner. If I lived in NYC, I think I would eat here every day! It is a perfect place to stop on the way to the Met from the 6 train, as well.

Mexican Brunch Experience

By Mindy F |

This is the best restaurant for brunch! It is so different and so fresh. It is not your typical omelte, potato and toast or eggs benedict. They add latin flavors to spice up your weekend brunch. I had the buttermilk pancakes y huevos. Very delicious. Just enough portion. 3 good size pancakes with goat cheese, 1 egg, and few strips of bacon. Altogether is a perfect blend. Their drinks are really good too.. I've had a bloody mary and sangria there before. They tasted really well and for what you are paying for them, they come in a mason jar. Dont waste it on the Mimosa, it's a small glass. My boyfriend loves the Huevos Revueltos En Salsa Verde. I cant wait to go there again and try the Huevos Benedict, they looked awesome. I've been here before for dinner as well. Tacos, burritos and I've had the Quinoa Ensalda which were all great. I dont think I would waste money on the guacamole. It's very little portion and not the best guac. If you ask for more chips they charge $1 extra. Make sure if you do get the guac and need more chips, confirm with your server. One thing that upsets me is when a server asks if you want something more and dont tell you its an extra price. I dont mind, just be honest with me before I get suprised to see it on the bill.

It was ok...

If you like traditional Mexican dishes, you won't like this place. But if you like a different twist, then this will be right up your alley! They didn't have regular margaritas (on the menu anyway) so I got a flavored one that was on the rocks. I do prefer blended ones so it wasn't great for me. The staff were very friendly and service was great.

Very good Mexican food

By robcurtross |

Cascabel Taqueria East is a fairly small restaurant with the feel of a sports bar -- and two gigantic TVs to prove it -- in the front, but it is definitely a fine place to try NYC's version of Mexican food. Sports fans don't despair -- they have a great lineup of craft beer as well. Black beans on the side are exceptionally good, and the vegetarian wrap was outstanding, albeit needing a bit of help from the condiments on the table. The sweet potato fries are cut very thin and are superb, the best I've ever had. Service was very friendly albeit a bit slow today in mid-afternoon on Boxing Day; cleanlines was very good.

Excellent Margaritas

By Ashley N |

I stopped by to have a quick margarita during happy hour before my hair appointment and I was thoroughly pleased. The bartender was helpful and he made the most delicious watermelon spicy margarita. I want to visit again for food!

Poor excuse for Mexican food.

By Ricomandog |

They only sell Taco's 2 at a time, so if you want 3 you have to buy 4. Me and my wife split 6 taco's, three different type. Each one was worse than the other. The beef and pork were a flavorless grisly meat substance, while the shrimp ones were also hard and over cook. The guacamole was turning brown and we sent it back. We had Mojito's, which were pretty good, but at 12 bucks a pop they better be! Grand total for our 6 tacos and two drink, $70 with tip. Won't be eating there again anytime soon!

Great laid back bar with a real cool atmosphere...

We stayed in NY for 2 weeks and visited this bar at least 5 times for a drink (or two... Or six!) This place has a really nice set up, is always busy but not in an annoying way. It has a great vibe and is totally not pretentious. The food is great and the sangria is fantastic! This place was a definite highlight of our trip thanks to the super friendly staff who were just fantastic!

Delish fancypants Mexican on the cheap

By klytia |

Cascabel Taqueria is definitely an Upper East Side gem but the secret is out. Be prepared to wait, though it is well worth it. On each table there is a set of house sauces, from roasted tomato to salsa verde in varying degrees of spiciness. These sauces alone make the meal! Changing up the combinations on the warm, salty tortilla chips is plenty of tasty fun on it's own. The menu has all kinds of dressed up staples, all of which are very reasonably priced. The soft tortillas are warm and taste homemade. We had the chorizo tacos and the carnitas (roasted pork butt). The chorizo was just a little too spicy for me but I'm rather delicate, spice lovers will totally dig it. The carnitas was right up my alley! I could have eaten another 2 plates of those. Delicately spiced and warming, the pork melts in your mouth and the pickled onion adds a little cool relief. Add any of those sauce combos you were working on with the tortilla chips and make your own flavor masterpiece. **Cascabel Taqueria is on the corner of 80th street and 2nd ave. A couple of storefronts up 2nd Ave (between 80th and 81st st) is Cascabel CANTINA. Their a smaller outpost, lots of beer and cocktails. Similar but different menu so don't expect that if the Taqueria is full that you can get your same favorite tacos at the Cantina. Food was tasty but it's just not the same caliber. Stick it out for seats at the Taqueria!

Best value, great Mexican Food

By PollyVousFrancais |

We keep wanting to try new Mexican places, but why bother when you've got Cascabel Taqueria? Consistently great food, great prices for a quick dinner out, friendly and accommodating staff. The decor is fun, the vibe is lively but not too noisy, and even if it weren't around the corner I'd go back again and again. And in the warm weather, dining on the sidewalk section is a great way to have good meal, enjoy the outdoors and check out the action.

Delicious!

I read some rave reviews about this place on other websites, was not as good as expected. The fish tacos were pretty amazing! The fish was perfectly breaded and lots of cilantro and toppings but they were very small and not worth $10. My friend got the Cemita Poblano, I was expecting it to be small to but it was huge! Looked so good! I think it is a better deal to go from 3 to 7 and get all the small dishes. If you are looking for high quality mexican, this is the place.

I loved it.

Excellent food. Very nice decor. Lunch specials are outstanding and a bargain—$10 for two courses. This is a really special place that shouldn’t be missed.

Lively food and atmosphere

There is a lot to choose from at this unassuming taco place. We stumbled in there after a few hours at a dive bar across the street. We just wanted to grab something quick and cheap. the hostess was very gracious and insisted we take a table, even though we told her we were only going to split an order of tacos. The bar was loud and crowded, and I much preferred the table. It was quieter, but I still had a good view of the Packers vs Bears game. Service was quick and competent. No more drinks for us! But they did not push us to order more, and were quite gracious with their delivery of chips & salsa (a menu item, not free), as well as delicious, house-made guacamole. the guac came with fresh tostitos that you would break up by hand...making it kind of a social, fun food, not that it isn't already. Salsa was tasty as well. We split the vegetarian tacos which had such a mind blowing array of ingredients in there, I can't even. There was only one veg option, but it was certainly enough for me. If I were to go back again, I'd bring my appetite and order a bunch of their interesting side orders such as friend yucca or cebolina. There were tons of options for meat eaters...much more than for vegetarians. So you really can't go wrong. The soft tortillas were made from corn so my celiac dining partner was cool with it. Will definitely go back....maybe on an all-you-can-eat-in-an-hour Taco Monday...I'll bring my son. They don't know who they're dealing with.

Happy Hours at Cascabel

By ichosehappy |

Service and food were pretty good. I get excellent Mexican food in California so I'm probably a tougher critic than the average East Coast consumer. Corn on the cob was grilled and was definitely the best I've ever had. That alone was worth going. The Happy Hour price for the margarita's was $7, and it was decent size. Salsa was fresh but could have used some more kick same with the spicy guac I ordered. It was just normal heat as far as I was concerned. Service was fast and friendly. Atmosphere was cute. Four of us met and everyone seemed pleased. I think the prices were a little higher for Happy Hour than I would have like but I get great Taco's for $1 in California and Margarita's for $3 or $4 in Orange County on Happy Hour so...

Some of the best tacos in nyc.

By DashVandelay |

Sophisticated and unique flavors in a casual atmosphere (at least at their first location). I've had chicken, steak and pork tacos. Steak was the best with crispy onion, chicken was good, chicharron was a great touch, pork as a whole was good but meat could have used more flavor. Just a little tough to go there regularly since the tacos are small and relatively high priced. Two tacos doesn't quite do it for me when I'm hungry.

Best burritos!

By KPI |

Loved all the food that we tried in this cute little neighbourhood restaurant, the guac was sensational, the menu choice was varied, the staff were friendly and efficient, especially the girl working the outside tables on 6/4 eve! Only gripe would be that the sangria was nice, but quite a small pitcher for the price. Would definitely return here though.

Good choice

Great food, great restaurant

By Francisco_OM |

Great restaurant in NYC. The food is great (from the starters to the tacos and the burritos)... well maybe apart from the churros (but by then you are so satisfied you don't care...), and the atmosphere is very cool. If you're in for a great relaxed mexican dinner, this is the spot in NYC. Not to be missed.

Good tacos, good drinks

By Gwendolyn M |

We arrived during happy hour so we got to sample tacos at a good price. We had good wine and margaritas and a beer sampler. Our host was super friendly and nice. It was noisy, but only because it was a happening place. We had our 2 kids with us and that was also fine.

Still one of the tastiest Mexican in town

The wet brunch is a bargain, you can mix and match drinks for an hour and the service is very friendly. All the food is very tasty, great flavors, always happy to have brunch or dinner in this very welcoming spot.

Excellent food

Went to this place in April with some friends who had been here before. We tried a range of their tacos, and loved each and every one. The service was excellent too. A really nice touch were the fleece blankets they offered all of us as we were sitting outside.

Take a drink or eat in a great mexican place

By KaelleL |

Drinks are inventive and tasty. Food is really nice, but do go there if you don't like cilantro. I love that, so no problem for myself! Not so expensive. I had a great evening and early night there!

Fresh, fresh, fresh

By pbgvluv |

My daughter lives in the neighborhood, so we came in for a later dinner on a Sunday evening. Service was slow, and they missed our drink order. Guacamole is delicious and gets you ready for the freshness presented during the entire meal. We had the carne asada, fish and chicken tacos. All were fantastic. The different flavors of each was great.
