This was my first visit to Chef Yu. I went with a friend who is on a "clean" diet and they accommodate her requests. We work nearby and it was wonderful that we didn't have to wait for our order. It almost seemed as if, they went in one kitchen door with the order and and our the other with the dish. And the food was tasty. My only criticism is that both orders didn't come out together My friend's steamed chicken and vegetables arrived about 5 minutes after mine and, not wanting to be rude, didn't eat until plate was in front of her.

I will start with the fact that the food was very good. However, that is the only good thing I can say about this experience. I have never been to a restaurant anywhere in the world where there has been so very little customer engagement! First my glass had lipstick marks on and they just took it away and replaced it with little acknowledgment or care. It was then an age before they even came and took our order and then when the food came they just plonked the food down on the table with little or no apparent care or engagement. When we paid (and tipped as per US custom and practice) and we were leaving there was absolutely not even a thank you or even an acknowledgement that we were leaving. Please do not think that it was busy! This was today Monday 21st January. Plenty of staff on and -11c (12.2 f) outside and relatively quiet due to freezing cold weather. I am shocked just how bad an experience this was!!! I will never return to this restaurant and would definitely not recommend it to any other visitors to NY.

We ate dinner at Chef Yu with a group of 18, so we were treated to a wide variety of dishes, including crispy egg rolls, hot & sour soup, crunchy beef and sauteed vegetables. All were served hot and fresh. The restaurant is lovely and inviting.

I work in the city and have lunch here or take out twice a week. Love their vegetables in garlic sauce

Visited here with my wife on Monday 2nd January, busy in New York but we got a table quite easily. Had a very nice meal at a decent price. Service was very good and "Happy Hour Deal" meant the drinks were very well priced. Throughly enjoyed it and would recommend it

I decided to try Chef Yu because it was close and there were several reviews that said the food was good (I was willing to take a chance on poor service). Overall the experience was pretty average. The staff was polite but inattentive, the food was forgettable, neither bad nor good.

Great Chinese. Close to msg. Nice large restaurant. High ceilings. Big windows. Spacious. Food was very good typical Chinese. Also had drink specials during dinner. Service was prompt but not rushed. Glad to have found it. We will be back!

Cosy tastefully decorated restaurant. Great choice, food is good but please note (as usual in the U.S) huge portions ! Sometimes would like to pay a little less and have a littel less on the plate (but that's just me !). Service not over-friendly but fast and effective.

Nothing unusual about the menu items, but they were obviously prepared from well-chosen, fresh ingredients. I was there with a group one night - and the restaurant handled the group well - and enjoyed it enough to go back with a friend a few nights later.

Typical Chinese food menu most Americans will be familiar with. Service was spot on; waiter very attentive. Food delivered on a timely basis. My General Tso was a bit over cooked, but I like crunchy food. Nice atmosphere. Seven minute walk from Penn Station. Prices reasonable considering located in NYC.

My friend and I went into NY last week to see a show. We always have dinner when we're in the city and usually we just stop in somewhere after reading a menu outside. Unfortunately NY was extremely crowded last Saturday so we were unable to find a table in the first 4 restaurants we tried to get into. We happened to walk past Chef Yu and noticed an empty table so we went in. We were both so glad we did. The food is very good, the restaurant is very clean and the service was great. I had hot and sour soup which was very tasty. My friend had wonton soup and she really liked that as well. We then split fried sausage dumplings which were some of the best I had ever had. We then split shrimp in garlic sauce. It was good but just a tiny bit too salty for me. My friend didn't think it was salty though. We both enjoyed our meals and plan to return. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Wanted nice sit down Asian food and this place was where I ended up. Efficient staff, great food, large portions and quick service make this a definite return destination for me and I say a must visit for everyone else! Everything we ordered was excellent and the mai tai’s were wonderful.

Delicious Chinese lunches at a reasonable price and in a beautiful setting. Service was quick and friendly.

Our family arrived a bit before the lunch rush - maybe around 1130. We were seated right away and all ordered the economical lunch specials - menu was varied enough for everyone to try something new. 3 meals was plenty of food for 2 adults and two preteens- we didn't feel pressure to order more or to overeat. Lots of business locals and reserved tables for larger groups.

A lovely Chinese restaurant near the theater district. The food was great and the service was good. Good place for vegans since there were many non-meat options on the menu.

We chose here for dinner because it was close to our hotel. The food was great-we ordered scallops & broccoli, pork & scallions, a chicken dish, brown rice to share between the 3 of us. We had plenty of food & the bill was about $20 each! Unbelievable for a NYC dinner!

The night we went, 3 hour happy hour till 7pm. A good start. The food is a a good quality and is value for money. As described by the staff, the portions are NYC size. Can recommend the Lo Mien noodles and the dumplings. Would happily return.

Visiting as a trio from England. Popped in here for some dinner. Beautifully decorated it was lovely to have some calm away from the busy streets. Huge portions. We ordered 3 dishes each served with a portion of rice so we assumed was equivalent to a plate each but we could have ordered one with extra rice. Rice was about a cup in size so enough for 1 person. Delicious traditional food with delicate tastes. Each dish was 16 dollars and we had a cocktail at 5 dollars. Cocktail was nice but nothing exciting. Service was slow but we were happy not to be rushed. One toilet is available to customers. Would recommend a visit.

It was miserable outside and we did not want to go far to eat. We looked inside. Tables were inviting, with nice white linen, the menu had lots of options for everyone in our party of four. Even without a reservation, the day after Thanksgiving, we were seated right away. Food was quite good and fresh - and we got a lot of vegetables, which is always nice when you're traveling and really sick of French fries. Service was attentive, but not intrusive. We had a lovely dinner and we will be back !

Well what can I say about this restaurant, arrived and wasn’t shown to our table. Then didn’t understand what prawn crackers are, finally ordered food which came out at different times. When I had finished my partners was cold. Then finally we came to pay. The waiter just threw the bill down and walked off, then the waitress came over we paid part cash part card and my card was taken away without knowing paid the bill on card. There was a lot of talking between the staff then they finally came over and gave my card back, after not signing a receipt was chased to sign. I Ask why? And was looked at disgustingly by the waiter (this was my first trip to New York!) I said to the waitress the service is shocking and needs to be addressed she just replied there’s no manager go away! Well my opinion ladies and gentlemen is the sooner this place shuts down the better as I have never been treated this way before! PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT VISIT THIS RESTAURANT UNLESS HAPPY TO TREATED POORLY!!

Went with a friend while attending a trade show at Jacob convention center. It was a short walking distance, and was quickly settled down on the 2nd floor of the restaurant once arrived. Plenty of selections from the lunch special and we both enjoyed the food, wether it is a green pepper with shredded beef or stirred fried beef with vegetables.

We picked an evening at Chef Yu based on the good reviews we came across The food was plenty, but rather bland in taste and lacking on the garnish/vegetable side. It is mainly meat, rice and sauce which lacks sophistication at that price point. The service was below average as my daugther got her meal first and then some more food arrived 10 min later and an additional 5 min passed before everybody had their food. For a decent restaurant this should be a No-go. The waiting staff largely ignored our requests for the process to be expedited. The most surprising part of the evening was during the meal where some pieces of insulation (very, very dusty) fell from the ceiling and landed on my sons plate, leaving a grey dust mark on the food. The staff apologized and provided my son with a new meal. However there was no attempt to offer us free drinks, desert or a reduced bill. We did not leave a tip.

Very poor, spring rolls came out 2 out of 4 were frozen cold on the inside. Was not given any cutlery apart from a fork. No drinks offered only water. Mains were average at best lacked flavour. Would not recommend.

It was a dark and snowy night in February, and my wife and I were very glad to find such a warm and friendly place for dinner so close to The New Yorker Wyndham. An interesting menu, which will bring us back again, coupled with speedy service, made us very glad for our choice. Very decent Chinese food, attractive setting, and the place was packed, but we were found places anyway. Good solid well-run place worth a second visit.

My family and I were visiting New York for the week and fancied a sit-down Chinese meal. We chose Chef-Yu as it was so close to our hotel, and we were pleasantly surprised! The service was good, and the portions were rather large - you could probably share most meals with someone. Really good.

We fancied a Chinese meal while out one day so headed over to China town. This was a big mistake as it was lunchtime and packed, the good looking restaurants (from reviews) had a wait of around 30-45minutes and the others didn’t look that hygienic. So we headed back to mid town as we were staying there and found this place. It looked nicer than anything in Chinatown and the food was fantastic as was the service and price.

The service was quick -- quick seating, quickly served. The lower level was definitely colder than the upper level. Being seated on the upper level, I was able to eat without my coat on but upon leaving I noticed that people below ate with their coats on because the wintry air could be felt. Staff was friendly also.

My wife and I went to this restaurant at the recommendation of our daughter. It has a good location near Times Square. The restaurant was well decorated and open. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. My wife and I ordered the Mixed Chinese Vegetable dish. Our daughter ordered the Beef and Broccoli. We all ordered soups - two Wonton soups and one Hot and Sour soup along with an egg rolls for all. Everything was fantastic! The egg rolls were served hot and delicious. The soups were all good. My wife and I really enjoyed the vegetable dish. The vegetables were served firm but cooked well in the brown sauce. Our daughter enjoyed her dish as well. We highly recommend Chef Yu's for an outstanding Chinese meal with great location, atmosphere and service.

Above average dine in/take out Chinese food restaurant. We go at least once a week for quick, inexpensive lunch since it’s across the street from our office. Decent lunch special menu for under $10 but they’re always busy. We’ve been there when we had a meal forgotten about because they never put it into the computer and they’re so busy they don’t come back to check on the table.

Chef Yu was interesting (in a good way). We arrived at about 7 pm without reservations and were promptly seated. This is a large restaurant. They still had happy hour drink pricing and we got 2 Mai Tai's (where were "ok" but we are not certain that they had alcohol). We had the Shredded Crispy Beef (very good) and Noodle with Minced Meat Soy Bean sauce. The Noodle dish was in a bowl and a very hot temperature that took at least 15 minutes to start to get to an edible temperature where we decided that we liked it. The serving sizes are generous. Bottom line, the service was pretty good, the food very good and the overall price point, very good.

Corner location, high ceilings, calm interior with better than average spacing of tables. The food however is high quality ingredients with skillful cooking to save a journey to Chinatown.Prices for the wide variety of Chinese dishes is modest by NYC standards.

Accidentally visited Chef Yu's as we were looking for a different restaurant but went in anyway....what a great decision! Had sweet and sour chicken and crispy shredded beef, both with rice. They were excellent. If we had time on our visit we would have gone back.

Good portions, reasonable prices. $7 for a glass of white wine. There is nice, but not a place that oversells itself -what you see is what you get. Good food at good prices.

My friend and I stumbled on this restaurant on a very busy and rainy New York December Saturday night. We were leaving our play and searching for a nice meal. All restaurants in the area were booked. We did not think to make reservations since we usually see plays on Wednesday matinees and rarely have trouble finding a table. Tonight, that was not the case! Saturdays in December make for a very, very crowded NY. So we left the theater district and headed to Penn Sation via 8th Ave to avoid the crowds. We literally stumbled on Chef Yu's lovely restauran. Looking through the window, I noticed one empty table for two. We quickly scanned the menu and were happy to be promptly seated!. The food was wonderful and the service was excellent. I read previous reviews complaining about the service and figure that the manager must have upped his game because the service was prompt and efficient. I had the wanton soup, pork dumplings and we split a spicy shrimp garlic entree. My friend had the hot and sour soup. We enjoyed it all. This was a great find! I travel to NYC frequently and will definitely return to Chef You.

We had a very nice lunch at this restaurant -- pork dumplings, beef and broccoli, and pulled pork with tofu. All were well prepared. Wait time was minimal (we were there a little before noon) and the service was excellent.

Six of us ate dinner and had cocktails at Chef Yu. Food was great a very reasonable. Happy hour drinks were $5.00, including my favorite Mojitos. Service was fast. The dumpling appetizers were great. Tab for (6), dinner and drinks was $180.00 (without tip) a real value in NYC. Will definitely come back next trip.

Good service, food was amazing, but a bit chilly and lacking in atmosphere. I’d still go back esp for the crispy shredded beef!

Came here for a last minute dinner because of the proximity to our hotel. The good was great, portions were wonderful and they served happy hour until 9pm, which was a plus. I would definitely go back.

Small drinks, water never refilled. Food came out immediately and tasted overcooked - leading me to believe it was prepared in advance then microwaved. There too many good restaurants in New York to waste time & money on this one.

Very attractive restaurant in the NYC garment center. The place is huge and the food is spectacularly good. My friend and I ordered cold sesame noodles and received two different cold sesame noodle dishes. We both loved them. The appetizers were served in 10 minutes but it took 50 minutes for the entree's to arrive which were similarly excellent. It was a struggle to get tea and beverages. The restaurant is always busy so it would appear that the owners are doing nothing to improve service. The service was horrendous.

Was a very good experience, the service was very fast, the food was good. the restaurant was clean and the ambience was good.

Visited this spot whilst on a trip to New York. Waiting staff very unfriendly and food was very unsatisfactory. The Cheque was placed on our table while eating our main course without us asking for it with no mention of deserts or tea. When scanning the bill we noticed there was a service charge of 20$ flat which was not mentioned at all before hand. Ordinarily this would have been fine, however, on this occasion I felt the service was absolutely appalling and did not deserve any tip. Overall experience was terrible. Would not recommend.

From a praised restaurant at a top location I had expected better food, better service, a better overall experience. Dumplings and crispy beef were merely average.

Normally i try not to have chinese - but you have to Challenge yourself once in a while. So many disappointments with lack of taste and to much deepfry! Chef Yu is different. Here you get traditional chinese with lots of tastes. The waiters are a bit hasty but it works. Pictured is schezuan chicken which was delightfull

Four of us stopped here for a quick lunch before our Broadway Show. The restaurant was conveniently located between Penn Station and our Theater, and we could walk to it. The first thing that struck us was how large it was – Tables on two floors with plenty of space for big families or large work groups. It looked clean and modern with its high ceilings and white décor. The Menu was large, but being short on time, we went straight for the lunch specials – Chicken and Rice for three of us, and Tofu and Rice for the fourth person. The hot food came out very fast, and was absolutely delicious. There was a nice mix of Chicken, Veggies and Fried Lotus in the dish. The food was reasonably priced, and the servers were quick, efficient and polite. We will certainly like to return on our next visit to NYC.

Vegan available and soups are good but the duck was not crispy and greasy. Nice layout good staff Better places down the street.

Yummy Asian food. Courteous staff. Dinner served family style on a lazy Susan. Large assortment of Asian dishes. Large portions. Great dinning experience.

Chef YU’s epynomous restaraunt is located at the corner of 36th street and 8th Avenue in downtown Manhattan, and as luck would have it - bang opposite my long time buddy Ejaz Khans Studio, so it his regular haunt The eatery is a typical Manhattan upmarket Chinese space with dim lights and quaint light fixtures and simple table ware. A huge space on the ground & mezzanine floor which seats more than 150 pax on both levels. A flashy but simple bar at the entrance entices diners for a drink, but the food is the hero in this place. Always advisable to make a reservation , or else expect a 15-20 minute wait in the evenings since all of Downtown Manhattan loves to pop in before taking the train home from Penn station. The trick here is like at Waggamama in london or the Wong Kei at wardour street london, is to ignore the wait time taken for the order - but catch the eye of the wait staff with a smile. The food is to die for, so the waiting isn’t all that bad. For starters I ordered the Steamed pork dumplings which came with a succulent piquant sauce, u like the schezwan and green sauces I’m used to being served with dumplings in India. The pork dumplings were amazing and light and fluffy and not heavy four based coating. The Xingtao beer 🍺 was crisp and chilled, though I had to persuade the server to bring a glass at least twice, before I met with success. My companion ordered the boiled Chinese vegetables , broccoli , snow peas in black bean sauce served with brown rice and it was a healthy option. We next asked for the orange chicken which is supposed to be a hit at the restaraunt and followed it up with a Shredded Beef Tenderloin Schezwan style served with spinach and Kale and brown Rice. Both the dishes were excellent and I cleaned up the plate. We were too stuffed for dessert, so we skipped it. Didn’t take any food pictures, but will definitely do so the next time The place was packed and the buzz was palatable , my next door diner had a cute lil poodle packed in a tote bag, sipping milk on a baby milk bottle , which was a first for me Enjoy Chef YU the next time that you’re in Midtown Manhattan, but dont hold your breath for a great Service Experience #food #foodporn #blog #chinese #foodblog #foodie #hungrybeggar

I happened to find this restaurant on line after I searched for Chinese restaurant close to Madison Square Garden to eat dinner before the concert. The food was good, ambiance, reasonably priced considering it’s in midtown Manhattan. Highly recommended.

Have been coming here for years used to be really good. Food is average and the service is terrible. Staff are rude, many restaurants in Manhattan to choose from this one is now last on my list. Awful!

This place is not specifically designed for vegetarians. However, there are plenty of options. The General Tzo tofu is outstanding. The soft tofu is lightly battered then fried. It topped with sweet and sour sauce with light vegetables. The steam vegetable dumplings are top with spicy peanut and sesame sauce. They are both delightful and delicious. If you are in the area be sure to visit this spacious and modern Chinese restaurant.

I come to Chef Yu's for the lunch specials quite often and on this trip the food was just okay. I ordered a chicken and broccoli that tasted like it was rushed out of the kitchen. The chicken was a little limp and the broccoli could have been cooked more. Everything was prompt and very friendly and the place is mobbed at lunch with Garment industry types but this trip was on the disappointing side.

I was walking to another Asian restaurant and happened past Chef Yu’s. I glanced in the windows and saw a nice looking decor and delicious food and then the A good inspector rating so I changed my plan and went in. I’m so glad I did! Happy hour drink specials were great and the food was perfect. I did the “what do you recommend” ask of the waiter and he suggested Shredded Pork with Dried Bean Curd - nothing I ever would have chosen, but it was delicious! Highly recommended place!

After reading reviews we were a bit hesitant as some people had said staff were rude. Staff were fine with us. We ordered spring roll starters, then for my main I had beef with peppers and white rice and my fiancé had schezwan chicken and white rice with a shared side of fried vegetable noodles. All the food was lovely and the alcohol was very strong!

I really don't understand how this place has the positive ratings that it does. The food was pretty bad...poor quality chicken, tasteless hot and sour soup. Couldn't eat more than a few bites.

Fabulous sweet and sour chicken. Friendly staff. Great location near The New Yorker hotel. We stopped in expecting “fast food” style Chinese food and were pleasantly surprised by the more upscale ambience.

The food was lovely, the bill arrived, we put the money out for the amount on the bill (rounded up) and the waiter said we had to pay a tip on top. He wanted an extra 15%.. started raising his voice so all the restaurant could hear in an attempt to shame us into paying extra. In all honesty we always leave a tip after we have paid but didn't like the fact that they said it was mandatory and the way they made us feel. A poor end to what was a nice meal.

Me and two of my co-workers had lunch at Chef Yu. I had the Young chow fried rice and the others had selections from the lunch menu. I'm a Chinese food junkie and have had it all over the world and this was by far the best mid town Manhattan has to offer. Atmosphere is very nice, wait service was good and food was excellent. The price was reasonable for mid town.

Recently I placed a order to pick up ( Shrimp Pineapple Fried Rice and Barbecue Ribs ), when I called the lady took my order, so, when I was about to order for the Ribs she hung up on me; I called back again and mentioned to the lady that she didn't let me finish, she gave me a kind of attitude like "Ok..go"...so, I picked my order, when I opened, the rice was too greasy, full of curry, when I was eating it, I felt something in my mouth, I thought it was the cashew, but it was kind of crunch, when i spitted out, it was egg shell...Freak!!!...the more I was chewing the more I was feeling the egg shell in my mouth,I checked the rice and there were egg shell all over, I was so mad that I had finished throwing my lunch...Will come back, nahhhh....I pass....

There are so many Chinese restaurants in NYC it is hard to say which is the best. If you are in midtown west, Chef Yu is moderately priced for well prepared typical Chinese dishes. We three shared fried noodles with beef, a crispy bird's nest of noodles topped with beef; General Tso's chicken and Shrimp in garlic sauce.

Right place for quick dinner. Typical normal Chinese restaurant menu. Without infamy and without praise. Fair price compared to exaggerated New York prices

I was walking down the streets of New York looking for a place to eat after 10pm due to my long meeting that day. Stumbled across this place and I was warned that it would be closed in 30 min. So I said: bring me the food and I’ll surprise you! Haha so I ordered orange flavored crispy beef and it was absolutely PHENOMENAL! I was soooo hungry that I swallowed everything in like 15 min! The best best beat meal!!! And the ambiance was like a beautiful lounge! Loved it!

Very good food. Recommended soups. Extensive menu. Hearty dishes and with the possibility to take away leftovers. Very friendly staff. Good price

We went there to celebrate our Daughter's Birthday. Our order was messed up twice, and they did replace it. We tipped them accordingly. The steward demanded that 15% tip were a rule and we had to pay it to the last cent before they let us go. We did not raise objections as we were there for a celebration but have never encountered anything like this before in the US. Tips are meant to be gestures of appreciation of service, not a demand or rule. It left a very bitter taste, on a day of celebration.

We eat Chinese probably once a month or so, and I have to say this is the best I've had in probably 10+ years. We're from Florida so we have not tried other Chinese restaurants in the City, but this was excellent. Food was fantastic, prices decent, service excellent and very nice atmosphere. Would definitely go again!

Excellent food, very good service. Kind of upscale restaurant setting, yet reasonable price. It is in the Manhattan area, close to Times Square, Macy’s, Rockefeller Center, etc.

When I’m in NYC I usually come to this restaurant because I feel at ease, well served and the food is excellent; the prices are reasonable and the locations very comfortable; I recommend for dessert the lemon sorbet, a delight.

Now, that I no longer live in New York City, I appreciate being able to find decent Chinese food (the restaurants where I live now tend to be wildly uneven, good one day and horrible the next). And Chef Yu I would say is solidly in the middle of the road, in terms of providing palatable versions of all your favorite Chinese classics - egg rolls, shrimp with lobster sauce, lo mein, orange chicken, etc. When I find myself in NYC, if I am in the neighborhood and by myself and don't otherwise have a plan for dinner, I will often stop by Chef Yu.

Hot summer day. Was looking for a lunch place between Penn Station and Port Authority. This restaurant was cool, attractive, good food, felt comfortable solo. Bargain. Hidden gem. Great price. Beef lo mein.

LAMENTABLE service. Unpleasant and expensive, the price of drinks varies according to the time, the meal ends it kicks you out.

The restaurant was kind of an accidental find; walking by it, I noticed a picture in the window that was the exact style of Kung Pao Chicken that I loved, and that has been difficult to find. So, I made a plan to have dinner there that same night. And I have to say that it was fantastic. The kung pao sauce was spicy and not too wet/soupy. In addition, I had the Wonton Soup. The wontons seemed to be homemade, unlike some industrial wontons that are sold in a lot of Chinese restaurants. The noodles were thin and delicate and the broth was light and very tasty. The service on the night that I dined there was prompt and courteous. I highly recommend it.

Food was lovely and nice big portions, staff could do with learning some manners but would visit again

We had an early light dinner at Chef Yu. We had happy hour cocktails followed by egg rolls, fried dumplings, scallions pancakes and cold noodles in peanut butter sauce. Food was really good as same as service.

Went here for my first time (and possible last time) on the Friday after New Year at a friend’s recommendation. I’m not really a fan of Chinese cuisine but overall it was tasty. Our waiter was quite rude. After handing us the lengthy menu he stood there staring at us as if we were to order without reading the menu. After a few minutes I asked if he could give us a few minutes to r-e-a-d the menu. I ordered the roasted duck; unfortunately it was only served with rice, no veggies. I asked a passing waiter if a side of bok choi was available. He said yes (for $4) however our waiter said no, we had to take a full order for $17. Had it not been for our particular waiter I would have given a higher rating.

It was a cold December day in NYC and we were starving. The big glass windows and high ceilings attracted us to come in and get warm. The service was wonderful, the food fresh, beautifully cooked and flavored. It is a large place, but they treat you personally. We liked it so much we came back the next day to eat and order food for the plane trip home. I cannot wait to go back.

Great place for some fresh chines,‘Cantonese. They offer a nice full bar, authentic menu with delicious dishes. I’m it sure why this hasn’t received better reviews as it worthily of delicious food critics. Friendly service, on the content west 36th street.

I was out in the rain, alone and hungry, and looking for somewhere clean and friendly to eat. I chose Chef Yu because there were a lot of diners and it is large so I could get a table out of the way. It is a very clean and well organized restaurant. I was served right away. My food was typical Chinese food, but presented nicely. I ordered General Tso's Chicken and a Spring Roll. I will return to this restaurant again.

From Pier 8 we walked to an early dinner @ Chef Yu near Madison Square gardens. Because it was early the restaurant was quiet and intimidate and the one of best Chinese dinners I ever had. The restaurant was nicely decorated, and we had a table by the window. I would most definitely recommend this restaurant as a pre-show dinner for the Gardens.

My husband and I ate here twice. The first time we came we each had the wonton soup, shared Sichuan dumplings, he had pork pan-fried noodles I had the beef chow and we shared stir-fry Chinese broccoli. This meal was very good. Today we each had sweet and sour soup which was bland with some ingredients missing such as tofu, julienned pork strips, etc. He had spicy chicken and the house special fried rice and both were well prepared and delicious. I had the vegetable chow fun which I liked. We would return if we're in NYC again but definitely would not order the sweet and sour. Table service was good.

Despite the fact that we were a large group (8 people) that had made a reservation in advance and showed up on time, we were treated with indifference on our arrival and were not seated for over 5 minutes. The restaurant was busy, but there appeared to be plenty of wait staff. Nevertheless, we waited over 20 minutes for someone to take our drink order. Seeing an apparent trend, we ordered our appetizers and meals as soon as the drinks came out. Surprisingly, it did not take long for the food to be served, and it was delicious (though not recommended for anyone on a low sodium diet). While the service would be enough to keep me from returning, any place can have an off night. The food was good enough for me to give Chef Yu another chance.

My friends and I came in one night for a birthday at around 9:30. This was a Saturday night in mid-town. The host told us to please hurry up with our order before showing us to our seat; strange, but didn't really think too much of it. The waiter barely spoke English and therefore did not understand our drink orders. We had to ask for the rice that the menu specifies as coming with the meal. We are about halfway through eating when an older gentleman (I'm assuming manager or owner) states that he is going to leave the check for us and leaves it in the middle of the table. Okay. He comes back 5 minutes later (still eating mind you) and he asks us to please pay now. We say alright and prepare two cards and the rest in cash. The man comes back to return the cards and proceeds to say "Only a two dollar tip?" Sir, there is still food on our table, we are not finished eating and you are upset about a tip? The fact that you are even pressuring for a tip in the first place is rude. Secondly, you weren't even our waiter. Thirdly, we had every intention of tipping after eating and upon leaving as you do in pretty much every restaurant. Fourthly, it is before 10:30 at a restaurant in the middle of the city; if you do not want to keep your business open then change your hours of operation. The people with cards weren't even able to write in a tip as he confronted us before they even signed the receipts. I am surely hoping this wasn't a racial issue as a group of young African American women. I have never been treated so poorly at a restaurant, EVER. Never going back.

We come across this place after a review in a Facebook group for tourists visiting New York. We saw mixed reviews on trip advisor and Google etc. but decided to go for it and judge it ourselves. I can honestly say it lived up to its good expectations. Food was amazing, portion sizes were huge, food was full of flavour. Cocktails and beer were cold/ strong and cheap (well for New York prices haha). I’m glad we came.

I really like the lunch specials at Chef Yu's. They are a nice size portion of food that is not over-whelming and there is just enough food. I had the shredded beef with Hunan sauce and vegetable fried rice and everything was delicious. The shredded beef was really hot due to the chili peppers that it had been cooked in. I could feel it with every bite. The sauces are delicious. The service was a little rushed at lunch as the place is so busy. There is quite a crowd there and there is a big take out business.

I have to say this is my second time to Chef Yu's for dinner and the food was very average to mediocre at best. I was convinced the person who was cooking this dinner was not even Chinese because their was no pride in the cooking. It tasted at best average. I had an egg roll that was basically inedible but I ate it because I was so hungry. It was so over-cooked and dried out that you could barely bite into it or cut it with a fork. I had the Cantonese Wonton Soup with Wontons, Roast Pork and Lo Mein noodles and it was okay. The soup itself was very rich in the flavor of the broth, they gave me a very large portion of roast pork that tasted really good and the Lo Mein noodles were cooked perfectly. The wontons were way overcooked and looked and tasted mushy. It really wrecked the quality of the dish and made it look unattractive. It also had cilantro in it and I never tasted that in Chinese cooking. The service was friendly but at the end of the night could see that they could not wait to close. Not my favorite place to get Chinese food.

I recently went to Chef Yu as I work in the neighborhood. I have gone to this restaurant many times before but never reviewed it. Sometimes I ordered take out. Anyway the service is quite good and fast too even though it’s always very crowded & busy during lunch! I went with business associates and they love it too. I would highly recommend this restaurant for all your Chinese cravings if you are in the neighborhood. I would definitely go again.

I took my hubby here, since I knew we’d get a wonderful meal for his birthday. We were visiting from out of town for a couple of days, so this hit the spot! The soup was perfect for a cold winter night,

Chinese food for me means a blast of tastes! Chef Yu's Seafood Deluxe with Rice @ circa €30 all in was almost tasteless needing major seasoning and sauces...which were not present on the table or offered. Disappointing

Great service and the food was beyond delicious and the atmosphere was very nice! Great for a date night!

Very good Chinese food, nice ambiance, very friendly and swift service at a very reasonable price for NY

Hummm, hummm best in town. Not to spicy, but just perfect, the shrimp for me were are the best, every year, I fly to NY and don't want to miss the Szechuan Style Dumplings, to me, they are a signature. Is not too hot if you worry about.

Had a lovely meal at this restaurant, service spot on, happy hour drinks meant a reasonably priced glass of wine in New York. A group of us went and everyone felt it was one of the best Chinese meals they had had.

Food was delish, restaurant is really nice but the guy who served us our meal was really rude & shouted the menu at us and when we didn't understand he would shout louder. We were glad we shrugged this off when the food arrived as it was so tasty but it was off putting.

Really enjoyed eating at this restaurant. The crispy shredded beef blew me away, though the sweet and sour chicken was just ok. Portions are pretty large and would recommend 2 people split one dish, or take home leftovers if you can. A little disappointed in the music choice. It was some hard rock music and would've appreciated something more appropriate. Otherwise the restaurant was very nice inside and the staff was super friendly.

This is a really nice Chinese restaurant with a wide range of options as to what to eat and for any number/group of people it suits them well. Not too pricey compared to other places in Manhattan and the location is pretty good - not too far away from Times Square but far enough so it's not to busy. Overall a Chinese I'd recommend if you're going to New York

The restaurants service and decor is top notch but the food is just not what it should be.. Used to live in Shenzhen China so I know what these dishes should taste like.. The food simply tasted off..

We went here for dinner and had a good dinner. We ordered three plates and the food was ok. The staff was also very friendly and our food was served in a fast manner.

Love it there one of the best places in the city for Chinese not a sushi place or buffet. Portions plenty big and all food is made fresh. If you do not know what you want tell the server some of your likes and dislikes and they will suggest a menu item or make one up for you. The place look fancy with a fancy price tag but not a fancy price tag. They have great seating in there and take out too. Me my brother and husband love this place. I found it be chance just walking along to find any place to eat and loved how the outside and inside looked. Went in ordered dumplings and so good went back and each time order something different or my fav dish there the beef stew noddle bowl soup. It is so much noddles and beef and veggies. Broth is not very salty for Chinese and one order gives me two big meals or two meals and a snack. Even though I do not go much the host recognizes me and gives me a great smile and hello each time same thing with one of the servers too. Stay away from China town food gross, filty, dirty, smells bad. Go here for Chinese or near Bloomingdale's Ginza and the place next to Ginza all three great.

I was visiting NYC with my husband. On this evening I was dining alone due to his business dinner. After a long day of sightseeing I was starving and started walking trying to find a sit down restaurant that would be feel comfortable for just 1. Chef Yu's has a pleasant exterior with their menu displayed outside. They have Nice large windows, so I could see inside. I saw the white table cloth's and that most people weren't extremely dressed up, so I thought it would be a good choice. It was! The food was very fresh, prepared perfectly. The staff & kitchen were very efficient. I had the fried dumplings and Chicken Pad Thai. Had my husband been with me we could have easily split the meal. The restaurant starting to quickly fill up, so I thought it must be a local favorite. I was very pleased with their prices as well. My total with tip was about $24. Very reasonable considering the location!

Food average, drinks weak but reasonable and close to MSG not sure I would return but service was nice and place clean and modern

Really affordable place. The food is really good. I would recommend 100%. We are in New York for 5 days. Will certainly go back.

It used to be a great hang out place for Chinese food in the mid of Manhattan. But this time the experience with them were very unpleasant & disappointing. Food was not that great. When we requested the lady who served us for tooth pick she told us to get it from the front counter. But we wish they will gain their fame again soon.

Considering other reviews (which I read after our dining experience), I am delighted to share that we had a great experience. Chef Yu was situated at the perfect location for us in between a theatre matinee and evening show. We arrived at 5:30 and there were so many tables to choose from. The place was clean and spacious. Staff were extremely responsive. They checked on us (filling water glasses, seeing if we needed anything, etc.) about every five minutes. The two of us ordered two appetizers and a main dish to share. It was the perfect amount of food for our appetites and the price was surely reasonable. We ordered Broccoli and Tofu, Cold Sesame Noodles and Spring Rolls. It was delicious through and through. I will definitely dine there again.

I had passed Chef Yu's many times on the way to the bus station but never stopped for a meal. I just happened to be walking by and saw their lunch special and thought, why not? The food and the service are wonderful. I had the Shredded Beef with Szechwan style with a vegetable fried rice with some hot tea. The whole thing was $9.95 and it made the perfect lunch. The beef was very tender and the sauce had a nice spicy flavor to it. The service was quick and efficient and they got me in and out fast. The whole lunch crowd got in and out in a timely manner. I recommend the restaurant for lunch.

We were part of a group of 33 people eating at Chef Yu with a Pre Fixe menu. We were seated at tables for 8 or 10. The servings were brought for groups of 6. It was served family style by a serious wait staff but was barely enough for our group of 8. No fortune cookies either.

We were fed up with all the fast food in NYC so opted for this restaurant close to our hotel. The array of dumplings were very tasty. They even had $5 cocktails from 4pm until 9pm. We had duck which was nice and my girls had prawns . Very delicious food with great service and very reasonable prices.

I have been to this place more than 4 times & not been disappointed once. Nice atmosphere. Great food & reasonably priced.

I have eaten several times at Chef Yu when I visit NY, but tonight was my first takeout experience with them. It is one of the better Chinese spots within walking distance of the New Yorker Hotel / Penn Station area in Midtown in terms of the quality of their food. More expensive than some others but also better food. The One star review is because the service I had today really irked me. I ordered food to go to take back to my Hotel room. While I was waiting, I ordered a beer as well and asked if I could sit at table (there were many tables open and no line or customers waiting). I left a $5 tip (16%) on the takeout order as well - even though I wasn't having anyone serve me; I literally just wanted a place to sit and a table to put my beer on while I waited. However I was told I had to sit on an ottoman thing by the door and put my beer on the floor by the coat rack while I waited. This seemed really poor service and I wished I could have taken my tip back. They should know better. The much cheaper chinese restaurants within a block on either side treat their customers better. I probably won't be back as I feel they were quite rude. Perhaps they are getting complacent. (also no chopsticks or fortune cookie in the to go order which was stapled shut so I couldn't see that -- a minor thing). Because they are more expensive than other nearby places, I guess I just expected better.

This is a nice, clean, spacious midtown restaurant. We have eaten here twice. Plain old chinese food, well cooked with reasonable prices. The szechuan style dumplings were very good- not greasy and pleasantly spiced ( could be a little hotter).

Called in here on a 4 night visit to NYC good service and must say the food was excellent and very reasonably priced well worth a visit

Wife and I chose this place because we wanted some good fresh Chinese food. We know that Chinese food in Denver is terrible, Houston is really good, SFO is amazingly authentic, and NYC is just fab. We live in Denver. We order hot and sour soup, king pao chicken, and pad Thai. I know - really boring but frankly we hadn’t had good hot and sour or king pao in awhile and our daughter loves pad Thai. So… Good was delish. As my wife said, food here just is on another level of flavor and freshness. We always feel like we need to add soy sauce or something to the food but not this time. It was just perfect out of the kitchen.

Chef yu in new york is a must visit for the new yorkers who have a taste for chinese food. The restaurant is located in central manhattan and is decently priced. The staff is very helpful and greets customers warmly. The overall ambience of Chef yu is decent as well. The food itself was exceptional, especially the sweet and sour crispy fish and the crispy orange beef. The helpings were enough to fill my family and I up and 3 dishes were enough for us four people. Overall, it was a very nice experience and i would recommend it for a nice dinner

well, fast and cheap with a varied choice. Great location in the midtown. To be booked in advance especially on weekends.

Food was freshly prepared and hot. We tried the orange beef, and, the sweet and sour chicken, Both were very good. Menu is extensive. Restaurant is well located near the corner of 8th Av and W 36th St. The sit down restaurant was clean and well decorated. Food is available for takeout or delivery, too.. Portions were generous. We will be back

The good was very good and write reasonably priced. I had General Tsao's shrimp $15 and my wife had eggplant with garlic $16. Mine was very tasty without being overpowering as often happens. My wife said her disk was not garlicky enough but still good. Service was excellent. Wait staff was quick and pleasant. The atmosphere was nice and not to noisy. All in all a good experience.

I wanted to have Chinese food in NYC. I remembered how good NY Chinese food was when I was growing up and would visit the city. We arrived for lunch and based on the initial appearance expected it to be very pricey. The lunch specials were very reasonably priced, the portions were generous and I had the best General Tso's chicken that I have ever tasted. My daughter was pleasantly surprised at the size and portion of her spicy shrimp meal. I would definitely return.

I have been to Chef Yu many times and it always is excellent. Recently I have discovered their Peking duck and it is perfect. As good as any I have had in China. I also like their soups very much. And their veggies. Basically you get a really authentic Chinese style meal there. It’s not good if you don’t like Chinese food ha ha. My only criticism of the restaurant is that the tables can be a little bit close together, which is not ideal for socializing with friends. They also have Chinese beer, Which I enjoy. I don’t know if they have desserts, as I never order dessert there. I think that the prices are reasonable, though you may be able to find cheaper Chinese food elsewhere. But the quality here is excellent and to me that’s worth the price.

If you are in the Times Square area and looking for a quick and tasty Chinese meal this restaurant will fit the bill at a very reasonable cost. The food is really quite good and the location is excellent if you are hanging out just south of the glitzy Times Square experience.

I have been coming to this place for years, and the food is always consistently delicious. However it seems to be getting incrementally worse and worse in the service area. The staff is apathetic at best and sometimes openly hostile. We waited 20 minutes for someone to take our order, The appetizers were brought out with the entrées, and then had to wait another 20 minutes after we asked for the check. I won’t be returning

We thoroughly enjoyed out meal at Chef Yu. All of the food was delicious and very comparable to food we have had on our trips to China (although maybe a little more Americanized.) We were with a group so had the opportunity to try quite a few different dishes which were served on a large lazy susan in the middle of the table. The only thing missing was the chopsticks which I'm sure they would have provided had we asked.

Three of us for early dinner. Prompt service, good food. They were almost in a hurry it seemed. Still, reasonable price for good Chinese. We are non spicy for the Grandchild that was along. Chicken w cashews was excellent. Broccoli w pork was undercooked to our tastes. Would go again. Chinese w tablecloths!

Good Chinese food offered as a lunch special. The service was prompt and efficient although the male servers weren't very friendly. Knives are needed if you are ordering broccoli. Note that there is an accessible bathroom one step up from the dining room.

Crispy beef was excellent. Better in restaurant, takeout was soggy. Chicken fried rice very good also. Moderately priced.

Reasonably friendly and pretty good value for money. Scallops in black bean sauce great, general tso’s Chicken good, fried chilli beef not bad. One of the cheaper meals we had in nyc. Would return.

Its unfortunate that I have to give this reataurant a bad review, because their food is good. However, every glass that I pick up is spotty and gross. I visit this place quite often, and ita the same every time. I will not return until they start doing a better job with the silver and glassware. Clean dishes are as important as service and food quality. Please get it together Chef Yu.

Absolutely terrible experience, ordered spring rolls which where cold in the middle and greasy, main course was bland and tasteless, and then had the cheek to say we didn't give them enough of a tip!!, much better restaurants in nearby vicinity.

While the people might have a bit of a problem with English, they correct things if errors are made. My husband enjoyed the spicy chicken and shrimp Kungpao and I liked the spicy baby shrimp. I had no idea it would have so much jalapeño but it was tasty!

Passed by in a very cold night , no intention to have long wait in a ramen place , so decided to try out this local restaurant, the lychee martini surprise very well came with seafood udon, thank god ! No wonder kind of busy at 7 pm in this restaurant, pretty happy for this very light dinner, reasonable price and feel healthy too!

Wife had Sesame Chicken, I had General Tso’s. It’s Chinese food, nothing special, but wasn’t looking for anything more. Priced reasonable. Wait staff seemed very busy, not very attentive. Didn’t have much personality. “What are you drinking what are you ordering” had to ask for refill, as after our food was brought out no one really stopped by to check on us.

We only went since it was close to hotel and we were running too late for a reservation somewhere else. We arrived at 930pm and by 10pm they wasted no time in closing up around us - on a Friday night! Large table of Chinese patrons were rushed out. Restaurant has no back door so trash was literally hailed through the restaurant. Food was average. Waiter was not knowledgeable about the menu. Won’t be back - but the black bean seafood dish was good - Peking duck was very average. No terrible just average. By 1015pm staff were at front of restaurant drinking beer.

We were recommended to go to this restaurant by some friends who used to live in New York & who raved about it. We were both slightly underwhelmed. It is fine, the food was OK the service was average, but just nothing to get excited about. We ordered some wine to start with but although they had a wine list our server couldn't find any so we settled with the Tsingtao beer which was a better bet anyway. We shared all the dishes and ordered the BBQ spare ribs which were on the tough & chewy side, the salt & pepper squid which was were good, the chicken rice noodle and finally the beef szechuan style which came with boiled rice in a separate bowl. The food came out when it was ready which sometimes meant there was a bit of a long pause between dishes arriving. We ordered too much & couldnt finish all,. The service was like the meal - OK

Setting is spacious and music is great. Friendly, kind and appreciated the smiles. Egg rolls fried perfectly and the sauce is so fresh and mildly sweet. Delicious! Chef Yu’s authentic dishes are large portions packed with flavors and heat to your liking. For us we like spice and heat. So excited that our dishes were actually that as listed on the menu. Thank you.

We read some mixed reviews but since it was in midtown and close to our hotel we decided to take a punt and we were not disappointed , quality of food and service was very good . The one disappointment and for this I almost did not leave a review (to say the quality of the food was really good ) was the pressure to tip high at the end - I had read about this before on previous reviews and unfortunately the same thing happened to us - put a sour note on an otherwise really nice dinner ..

Excellent food and beautiful atmosphere. We tried a chicken lunch special and a Cantonese wonton soup and both were delicious. The quality of the broth was excellent. We enjoyed excellent service too. This was our first visit but next time in NYC we will come back.

While the place was clean and nice, I have to say I was underwhelmed. The fried pork dumplings were great but also the highlight of the meal. The service was AWFUL. Our waiter didn’t bring our soups, it took 20 minutes to get our drinks and I never did get a refill on my tea which I requested 3 times. The gal next to us had to keep asking about her drink as well and they finally brought her 4 of them all at once and wanted to charge her. Add to that the fact that the food was average at best. Garlic sauce was nearly flavorless. The mango chicken was the only entree of three that was completely edible, and it was quite good to be fair.

My friend and I split two different special lunch choices. Neither was anything special but neither was less than average. Service was fast -- both in terms of getting the food out of the kitchen during busy lunch hour AND in trying to get our dishes cleared before we were ready for that. Prices are reasonable.

Atmoshere is comfortable and the restaurant is very quiet. The food was very average and the service was terrible. My duck was very greasy. One guest wanted soft noodles and the waiter did not know what she was saying but pretended he did. She was served crispy noodles. They also served our martinis in a wine glass.

So my friend and I had lunch here as we do quite often. Chef Yu may be under new management because all of the old staff is not there anymore. We proceeded to order our food and the waiter was very "antsy" We are trying to tell him what we want but he is writing and slowly walking away to where we had to tell him that we weren't finished with the order. The food comes and we eat but half way through he comes and places the CHECK on the table. We looked at each other as to say are we FINISHED YET??? Meanwhile he is watching us like we are going to run away with the food. This is so embarrassing! After we are now done with eating we left the card to pay. He comes back and goes no no no it HAS to be a 15% TIP. What?? Wait this is not listed on the receipt it is 2 ppl eating on a LUNCH SPECIAL the order was NOT that much to even warrant that much of a TIP charge. Secondly after u so RUDELY from the beginning act like you didn't want to take the order and shoved the check on the table before we can even ask for dessert is UNACCEPTABLE. You should be happy SOMETHING was offered instead of nothing at all. Better CUSTOMER SERVICE goes a LONG WAY!

It is an unpretentious, economical restaurant with good food; The treatment is cordial and the locations are comfortable; It is a good option for lunch and dinner in a wide time range.

The food is average. Service is very good and fast. Had lunch at this place. Quantity is large, but quality is so so. People don't eat large lunch. How about exchange the quantity into better quality. People may favour it.

This place was recommended to be as a non pretentious, reasonably priced place close to Times Square/ Penn station with excellent food. Thumbs up all the way. Big portions, happy hour $5 drinks between 4-7, fast service.

Not a real happy experience. Greeted at the door not hello, welcome greeting or even smiles. Waitress hardly spoke to me never even smiled and the other wait staff was the same. I'll chalk it up to everyone being tired as it was at the end of their day. Menu has Peking Duck a notoriously hard dish to prepare which requires a lot of lead time. Beef and broccoli was excellent. Beef was cooked perfectly and was tender as I remember it anywhere else. Will give them a 2nd chance. More later..

We stumbled across this place after quite a long day shopping. Saw the menu was reasonably priced so decided to give it a go. The setting was very comfortable and we found the service to be good. Best of all, the food was delicious. We had our usual salt & pepper squid and it was among the best we’ve ever had. BBQ ribs were very nice also. My only criticism would be that the pad Thai was not spicy at all, but tasted quite nice all the same. Would definitely recommend here.

My wife and I went here and loved it. The lunch special, with water to drink, was less than $30 for both of us, not including a tip. Service was fast and friendly. Food was hot and tasty. Great value!

Chef Yu provided excellent customer service and delicious food. My friend and I each had the Singapore rice noodles. My friend also enjoyed the vegetable spring rolls and hot & sour soup.

We popped in one evening last week whilst on holiday in NYC, this is the second time we’ve been to Chef Yu and again the food was 10/10 Kitchen closed at 9:30pm and we got there just after 9pm. We were promptly seated and provided menus, the food service was quick and was absolutely fantastic! Really fresh and amazingly tasty! Looking forward to visiting again when we are next on hols in NYC! Highly recommend visiting for a nice meal.

Ordered a rice&shrimp dish, dont remember the exact name, but ohmy!!! Biggest plate ive seen and it was so delicious! Plus very nice welcoming staff - everyone one are so cheerful! Just loved this place.

The food was amazing. Huge portions ( for a Brit) but at the end the server insisted on getting me to tip higher than I had previously added. Since it was closing and late I didn’t make much of a fuss. But it really put a dampener on my evening

Nice Chinese restaurant Nice sharing size plates They will acomódate how hot you want your food They have a big selection and is open until late

In a sea of Korean restaurants and good bars and various others, it was nice to rediscover this Chinese restaurant. So an additional quarter star for location. Next, a quarter star for a long list of $5.00 drinks, on a weekend evening! In midtown!! The dumplings were 8 for $7.95 vs say 6 for $6.95. Better financially and better than average for taste. However the serving of tofu in brown sauce was modest in size, though the garnish included fresh mushrooms, and the size of the serving was countered by the plate size portion of chicken and eggplant. Overall, the rating reflects our standard fare for the evening. However, for a good Chinese restaurant, with $5 drinks, with polite attentive service means we absolutely positively will make this a go to spot for us. The entire bill with 2 drinks and 20 % tip was $60.

On 4th of July, me and my boyfriend went to celebrate. We shared a peaking duck, and then we got the check. One of the men that served us, got mad at us for not tipsing enough. He said that if we didn’t want to tip 15%, we should stay home and order in…. We tip what we want to tip. That’s up to us, and not the restaurant.

I stopped here for lunch while in NYC for business. It was close to my hotel and convenient to get to. I read a positive review online, and they were correct. This is a great place to eat. My eyes actually saw they had a lobster special this day, and so I went with that, plus an early order of steamed pork dumplings. Coming from NE and loving lobster, this was a treat. While I really loved it, I'm not sure it would be a dish someone not familiar with lobsters should get, as it came out in most of its shell, but well sliced for relatively easy access to the lobster meat. The restaurant was clean, the service was attentive, and it was pretty crowded. Would definitely go back.

Very inviting and friendly. The food was excellent and authentic and it is on our "must go again" list when we next visit NYC. We happened upon it on our stroll down 8th and we are glad we stopped in. I wish it had been for dinner because the menu looked amazing. Can't wait to go back.

I ate dinner here while in Manhattan on business, simply because it was close to my hotel. I expected a typical hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find a very contemporary restaurant with tablecloths and some interesting dishes on the very large menu. I ordered the sweet & crispy shrimp, which was a lot like sweet & sour but not as cloyingly sweet and with plenty of fresh veggies. It was a very satisfying meal. My server was great, and prices were reasonable for Midtown. If you're looking for Chinese "comfort food" this is a good choice.

We were a party of 4, choice of menu excellent prices reasonable for a city. Quality of the food was great, good portion size. The only criticism was the service, the meals were brought out at different times leaving 1 or 2 of our group waiting. Waiter over keen with the water

Had the Beef with Green Chili Peppers and it was outstanding. What a great little place. It is clean and the staff here are more than helpful. They will deliver and you get it for take-out. Very good Chinese restaurant. will continue eating here as long as I am staying over this way.

Think one can’t get a really good dinner in midtown Manhattan for under twenty bucks? Well, surprise! Chef Yu can sate the heartiest appetite with a card of forty or fifty dishes all for less than that. In fact, the only three entrees on his vast and varied card costing more are two whole fish renditions and his Peking duck. Ben and Mrs Too had decided on Chef Yu for our first dinner in New York even before we left home. Browsing TripAdvisor, we knew that it was only a block or so from our hotel, that the menu was extensive and surprisingly inexpensive, and the premises attractive. We are increasingly frustrated with TripAdvisor’s revision of the requirement that submitted photos be accompanied with a useful descriptive caption. Neither of us has been able to derive much usefulness from a plate of “photo0.jpg” and even less from an attractive platter of “20171015__1883654_large.jpg”. With no help from TA, you will have use your imagination We were seated by a bright and capable hostess, Ivy, and left to the ministrations of Derik, who served us graciously and efficiently.. We had the chicken in garlic sauce and the crispy shrimp Szechuan style. We both found our dinners tasty and quite enjoyable, although Ben’s shrimp somehow missed the crispy boat. We have both often noticed that restaurants serving either Italian or Chinese cuisine are so often accused of not being “authentic”. It is our contention that both of these, found and enjoyed around the world, are so loved precisely because of their adaptability to ingredients available in every size, shape, and flavor anywhere across the globe. Authenticity is bound to become fogged in these circumstances. Good Chinese food is popular and sought after everywhere, and for good cause.

Went in and asked for a table for two and was shown to a table straight away! Good? No! Sat down was then told hurry up the kitchen is closing make your choice! We did hastily but didn’t have the time to browse as they stood over us and kept saying we are closing soon! It was only 21.00hrs If they said they were closing when we went in we would of at least be aware! They were just Rude but actually food was good, inexpensive but drinks dead.

I had the cashew chicken and the beef chow fun. The chicken was not very good. Way too heavy on the soy sauce so it was very salty and dark in color. Not super appetizing. On the other hand the chow fun was perfect. I have heard it said that a Cantonese chef is tested by how they cook that dish. In any case one dish was great and one mediocre. My advice is to try somewhere else since there are lots of great Chinese places around 35th street.

This is a well located restaurant and it is open for lunch on Saturday unlike other nearby spots. They do not have a lunch menu on Saturday though and so it can be pricey. The servers are not friendly but they are efficient. The food seems to be lacking something or perhaps they are selling to some who are not adventurous. The restaurant is large and well appointed but the first floor bathroom was not clean enough with old dirt caked in corners.

Love this restaurant! Great lunch specials and the service is quick! Perfect if you are on a time schedule. Usually food is served less than 5 mins of your order.

Restaurant was empty but the waiter wouldn't let me sit on a round table and only offered one of the corner square tables. The waiter was rude and was laughing with other waiters in Chinese while looking at us throughout our meal. We felt very humiliated. The food was mediocre at best and dumplings had very thick skin and were cold. And the worst thing of all, even though a service charge was not listed in the menu and we were less than a party of 5, they still charged us a 18% mandatory gratuity on the bill. This restaurant used to be good a few years ago but with the recent reviews they have been receiving, I doubt it will last longer than another year. If they want to survive in midtown Manhattan, they need to stop stealing people's money.

Very good food, good consultancy about their food (selection) and they did recommended to order not too much as the dishes have a good size (which meant for them less revenue) Will definitely eat here again Been here with 4 people which have had the same opinion

The staff at the hotel recommended the restaurant so we tried it. The food was good.......when we finally got it. The waiter was horrible. I can only presume other people complained because after he took our order the orders of the two tables near us, we didn't see him anymore. Someone else took over his duties. Another customer had an issue with him when we first arrived so I should have seen it coming. We received the wrong food and the lady sitting next to us waited 40 minutes for a bowl of soup. Aside from all of that the food was actually pretty good. Unfortunately it wasn't good enough for me to forget the poor service.

Less than average meal with excellent service to be to told by a rude manager that I must tip 15% before I had even paid the bill very inappropriate as I was on a date. I will not be returning ever and will make sure this review continues to be posted With a abundance of good restaurants you shouldn’t waste your money
Food was only so-so...
The location was unbeatable...As we were walking along 8th Ave trying to find a warm place to have a sit down meal upon arriving at Penn Station, we were drawn in by the aroma wafting from this place. We thought it was a good sign to see so many people waited for their carry-outs and was immediately seated. Waiter quickly dropped off 2 glasses of water without saying anything. Took him a long time to come back and was in a hurry to get our order. Couldn't spend any more time answering any of our questions. My husband ordered their General Tso lunch combo and I got their house soup noodle. Husband said the chicken was sliced so thin you could see through it. And the sauce was very vinegary. The spring rolls was blah and cold. My noodle soup didn't fare much better. A few tiny shrimp and barely there pork. Very tasteless. Waiter never came back to ask us how was the food. But he was quick to present us with the check. I guess it was a place for office workers to have their lunch break. It's a definite no for us. Skip this and go somewhere else for the food and service!
