Hole in the Wall Dumplings

By Michael M |

This another hole-in-the-wall dumpling house in Chinatown. Like the others, it's cheap and delicious. The pork and chive ones are great, but my favorite is the veggie dumplings. The veggies are still crunchy even though they been cooked, so they felt slightly fresher than some of the other places. The people are nice and you can satisfy you hunger for very little expense.

Best Cheap and Delicious Dumplings in the LES

By Michael Riegelman |

#1, 2 & 22 (and 18 if you're super hungry). I haven't deviated from this order for more than 10 years since I've been coming to this delicious hole-in-the-wall Dumpling House in the LES. When Covid hit NYC in 2020 and shut down the city the place I missed most was here. Not only is the food yummy but it's cheap too. You can waddle outta here with a full belly (mine's Enormous and hard to fill) for under $20 (my super hungry order above is just $15). The place is very small, only having 2 little tables, and then a short countertop against the wall that people can sit at, but it's not the place to go if you wanna stay for awhile. Please eat and leave to make room for the next folks as the place is Always busy. Whether vegetarian or omnivore you can eat to your delight here as they have both meat and meatless dumplings, pancakes and soups. My fav are the chive and pork pan fried dumplings (10 for $4) and the chives pancakes (2 for $3). The secret is to get a container to mix your soy, sriracha and vinegar together to bathe your dumplings in. The place is cash only so don't come empty handed. There's an ATM in the store but I hate paying the hefty extra ATM fees. No bathroom either but there's a fairly clean public one across the street at Seward Park, but it's not 24/7. I'm not sure what time the bathroom facility closes, but it's nice to eat over in the park watching a good volleyball game. I gotta say I miss the older woman who I 'thought' owned the place. She's been gone for a couple years now. I asked the 'new' person who works the register and she said she's on 'vacation'. Hope it's not the permanent kind She always knew my order as soon as I walked in. I miss that. Although NYC is full of dumpling houses this is the place to be .

Hidden gem in plain sight

By Phil W |

They don't come any fresher: watch the dumplings being made. The stars are the fresh Chinese dumplings, steamed or pan-fried, and there are also dumpling-and-noodle soups, sesame pancakes, spring rolls, and sauteed bok choy. Just a few seats and not fancy by any means, but "A" health-department rating.

Awesome dumplings

Loved the freshness of the pork chive dumpling the fresh ginger made them. We should have tripled our order. Hole in the wall but worth it.

Incredible Deal

By mfireup |

Yes!!!! Incredible price for the food. 4 spring rolls for $2 - would have loved to try them fresh but was there at 9pm on a Sunday. Even then, they were yummy. The fried pork dumplings are delicious, juicy and crispy. So tasty with a bit of sriracha and soy sauce. Caution: they do dilute their soy sauce with white vinegar. Didn't bother me, but be wary of the sour taste. They offer some canned drinks as well - they sold me an Arizona tea at cost ($1) and that's when I knew I fell in love. Sesame pancake would taste better fresh I'm sure...but when the total meal for 2 people is less than $8, you can't complain :)

Delicious dumplings at a great price!

By MabesNY |

Don't let the "hole-in-the-wall" looks of this place fool you. Their delicious fried dumplings at 12 for $3 are the best bargain in town. There are a few seats in the store so you could eat in but we always get 3 dozen fried dumplings to go on our way home from Manhattan via the Williamsburg Bridge. The workers in the store don't speak much English but they're very nice and you can often catch them rolling out the dough for the dumpling skins. We've also tried their steamed vegetable dumplings, spring rolls and chive pancakes but the pork & chive fried dumplings are the best. You can even get a bag of 30 frozen dumplings to save for a rainy day--I think the bag was only $5!

Cheap and Tasty

The food here is SO good and SO affordable. I went for the first time with my son and best friend. LOVED it! We ordered dumplings, spring rolls and noodles. And they were some of the best spring rolls and dumplings I have ever had! Will absolutely be back.

North Dumpling, NYC

By Too Poor 2 |

A very typical neigbourhood fast eat place in Chinatown that serves only dumplings of several varieties. We have been coming here for years and they finally raised their prices to 4/$1, but you have to buy 12 for $3. We always get the #1 or #2 as they are very filling and tasty, and are plentiful to share. The place is really small and usually busy on weekends. Pan fried ones are faster to get instead of the steamed ones.

Thank You Mr Cab Driver...

By Johnny A |

Our cab driver drop us off one evening in front of our apartment...and said "if u live here you need to try these dumplings" Hey who am i to trust a cabbie...but trust I did and he wasnt wrong. Get your 10 dumplings for $4, yes just $4...they are cooked fresh for you on the spot steamed or fried. Sometimes the simplest storefront can surprise you

Fantastic value

This is not the type of restaurant that I would recommend someone seek out purposefully on a trip to NYC. But if you find yourself hungry in this area, this is a very economical option. This is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant and one could easily dismiss it due to the interior and small size consisting of two 4 seat tables and a very small eating counter. We tried to eat here after we checked in to our Airbnb but there was no seating available at the time. We walked by later that day to try it and again no seating but there was a crowd of people just eating while standing outside of the restaurant. As you can tell, the limited seating will make it hard for you to sit and eat here unless you wait for someone to leave. As the restaurant's name implies, this joint specializes in dumplings both steamed and wok-fried. Dumplings are cooked in batches and stored in a warming tray and because of this, the fried dumplings do lose some their crispiness. We ordered fried and steamed chive and pork dumplings, beef noodle soup, pork pancake (although chive is supposedly the star of the group but they had run out by the time we made it back to eat) and spring rolls. The beef noodle soup (not spicy) had a nice flavor and was served with thicker almost udon style noodles and beef shank rather than beef roast. Beef shank is commonly used in Chinese beef soups but for those who are unfamiliar, the grizzle might be off putting but for me was preferred. Both the steamed and fried dumplings had plenty of pork and chive filling and was flavored well. I preferred the steamed as that is easier to preserve in a warming tray. The spring rolls were seasoned well and crunchy with very little greasiness. In addition the hot food served, they also sell frozen dumplings for you to take home and prepare. This was not the best meal that we had during our trip but for the speed, convenience and price, I would not hesitate eating here again if i were in the area. We fed 4 adults (2 males, 2 females) with a soft drink and Tsing Tao beer for $24 total. It was also clear that this is a neighborhood spot as the folks who came in were clearly locals.

Delicious

Homestyle dumplings

By by-giovanna-sun |

It's a typical Mom and Pa's dumplings shop in Lower East Side, the prices are so friendly, 8 dumplings for $2.5, I ordered the pork dumplings and hot and sour soup, only $5 and it's delicious.

Great long-time "cheap" dumpling joint

By John_Setrak |

They serve several types of items but the star of the show is the fried dumplings with pork and chives. Very inexpensive, I believe 10 for $2.50 or thereabouts... Their other offerings are similarly cheap but not as delicious. The place is simple, a few tables so there may or may not be seating available. They do a huge to-go business so people are always in and out. Some simple beverages like canned soda and bottled water but also some more exotic chinese drinks (just a few). The place is somewhat clean but can get a little messy. Overall it's decent. They have two bottles of sauces, a black dumpling sauce (similar to oyster sauce but different) and a red sriracha sauce - it's in sriracha bottles but is smooth and not as "chunky" (or garlicky) as regular sriracha, but I think this is still a form of sriracha. It is a red, smooth, hot sauce. Both of these sauces together go great on the dumplings. I eat the dumplings alternative between plain or with both sauces. I've been coming here for 15 or more years. I feel like the skin of the dumplings has gotten a little thinner but they still have the same delicious doughy flavor. I only get the fried dumplings, not steamed. I never get sick of this place. Highly recommend if you want something just delicious and dirt cheap. I often complement my visit here by visiting one or two other dumpling joints nearby as well as Ling Kee's Jerky shop a couple blocks down on Canal. Another great hidden gem especially for tourists who are both on a budget but want a real NYC cheap eats experience. This is one of the best ever.

Best Dinner Under $10!

Tiny, Local Dumpling Shop with Great Prices

By PattyLongIsland |

There are many tiny, no frills dumpling and noodle shops in NYC, especially Chinatown, but North Dumpling is one of my favorites. Don't let the look of it from the outside stop you from going in. It does look dirty and run down. There are a couple of small tables and some counter space inside. The workers are huddled together behind the counter and in the back, cranking out those delicious dumplings, pancakes, soups and spring rolls. First of all, the value. $4 for 12 dumplings; $2 for 4 spring rolls; $.75 for a pancake;$1.25 for a small bowl of wonton soup. Outrageous! And, the best part is, they are all delicious. You can get the dumplings fried or steamed and filled with vegetables or pork and chives. Even better: if you are having a party or just want a truck load of dumplings to munch on, you can get a bag of frozen dumplings for $5 (for 30 pork or 25 veggie). You can't find that kind of value in the supermarkets or specialty stores). Lines can get very long around lunchtime, so go early if you can.

Excellent well priced dumplings that are delicious

By Justin W |

China North Dumpling is a tiny hole in the wall establishment on the edges of Chinatown that is popular with the hipsters as well as the locals. The place is always busy. The ladies make the dumplings fresh right in front of you and they are cooked fresh either steamed or fried right then to order. I loved their steamed dumplings and for $4.00 they are a steal considering uptown or in other parts of Chinatown they can go up to $6.00-$9.00. The ladies that work there are super nice and seem to take pleasure in the crowds of people who come to their restaurant. It is worth the trip.

The best pan-fried dumplings

By Justin W |

I love coming to this little hole in the wall restaurant. The prices are so fair and the service is excellent. The family that runs this little dumpling house are really nice and so courteous to their customers. The best part is the food is so reasonable and delicious. You can get 10 fried dumplings for $4.00 and in this economy that is a bargain. The dumplings are made fresh right in front of you and are cooked to order. The turnover and crowds are so big that everything is freshly made. It is the best place to come for a reasonable meal.

Delicious and very cheap for NY

Late night snack with friendly service

By Justin W |

China North Dumpling never stops amazing me. All the other restaurants in Chinatown in Manhattan close up at 10:00pm on a Friday night which they never did before COVID. Now you are lucky to find someone open on a Friday or Saturday night after 10:00pm. This is why China North Dumpling is so busy. That and the fact they have friendly service and reasonable prices and the food is excellent. I stopped on a very cold night and had their Dumpling Noodle Soup which is excellent. The tiny little restaurant at 10:30pm at night was packed and as those people left, more were coming in for their pan-fried and steamed dumplings. The crowds never stopped that evening even after I left around 11:00pm. The hipster crowd dominates that place at night. The food is just wonderful. The chicken broth can cure any cold and has such a nice rich flavor. The dumplings and noodles are all fresh and made in the restaurant. That's why the quality is so good. The husband and wife team that run this small restaurant under sometimes pressured crowds know how to run a business and still be pleasant. It is one of those restaurants that every neighborhood should have with fair prices, excellent food and friendly service.

Cheap eats

By Chmpgnrose |

Cheap eats still exist in 2019 volatile economy. This business is the classic hole in the wall ergo do not expect anything glamorous. Seating is limited. Chives and pork steam dumplings 10 pcs, $3.50 I ordered to go which was still fresh. I prefer steam dumplings rather than pan fried. Cash only. Dumplings is comfort food when life knocks you down you can choose to stand up. Chinese dumplings heal the soul.

Delicious, steamed dumplings for $4.00

By Justin W |

I had seen a YouTube video on China North Dumpling and had to try it when I was in the neighborhood. The place I have to admit is a little dumpy, but the food and the service are amazing. The dumplings were made fresh right in front of me and came out perfectly steamed. They are very generous with their portion size, and I gotten freshly made dumplings for $4.00. I thought that was extremely generous for the price. They were delicious. The perfect pork and chive mixture and I doused them with soy sauce and vinegar. They tasted wonderful. It is a must try.
