Looking for a Chinese restaurant near Times Square we came across good reviews of this China River....never mistake was bigger! The place is pretty shabby, bad food: we had spring rolls, a fried rice with vegetables, ravioli with shrimp, all strictly tasteless, a soup with scarf beef, and a chicken with peanuts that tasted burnt. For about $80.... go for it. Evitatelo!!!

Recently opened. The place looked suspicious with questionable signage. The beer taps didn’t work. Not sure whether they had the ingredients to make a Cosmo. They posted a closing time of 11:00, but the kitchen closed at 10:30. Normally they would be ranked 2 for this. BUT, The food was great. Served hot. Well presented with excellent flavor. Each dish ample for 2 people. Better than average fried rice. Superior General Yao’s that was both crunchy and sweet. The beans and eggplant wonderful. And we were able to serve four big eaters for around $80, compared with $150 for most NYZ places. I would return.

Popped in on the way back to the hotel, we didn't realise all the people sitting at the counter eating were actually staff with a girl behind the bar also eating but constantly spitting her food back out. We ordered spare ribs, sweet and sour chicken, white and brown rice, chicken with cashew nuts and a prawn dish. All dishes apart from the prawn dish came out immediately!! we had to wait 10 minutes for the prawn dish to arrive, my sweet and sour and the ribs and white rice were ok, the brown rice wasn't cooked properly. This was sent back. My friend who had the chicken with cashew nuts couldn't eat it, it resembled Pedigree chum. At the end of the meal they had the nerve to say we had to pay a tip of $18. Would never return

Excellent food ! What a great place for dinner before a Broadway show . They asked us what time the show we were seeing was as to make sure we would make curtain time . The food was excellent, my wife said she would make the trip from Long Island just for the food ! Even if we were not seeing a show . That’s a good review folks . Nice people in the front end of this Restaurant, and will help u in any way they can . Make a reservation and sit upstairs for a super view of broadway 🎭 Enjoy we will be back !

Visited here on last day before flying home. Lunch deal for $9.95 including soup or spring roll and main with rice. Food was piping hot and very tasty. Freshly made and used mainly by Asian customers which is always a good sign too. Would happily recommend coming here to eat.

We came in with a larger group and they were able to accommodate us. The food was good, everyone enjoyed what there meals.

Stopped in for dinner, ordered 2 spring rolls, General's Chicken and hot and sour soup. Soup was good a little on the peppery side, the spring rolls were ok, seemed store bought, the generals chicken, i asked for extra spicy, it really wasn't, it wasn't overly sweet which was nice. It was ok, but nothing to brag about in a city of so many places.

Our last night in New York and we both fancied eating Chinese. The China River restaurant was within walking distance of hotel and it didn't disappoint. One of the best we've had. The food was freshly cooked, generous portions and reasonably priced. Friendly staff too.We chose spicy wantons and pork dumplings as a starter and sweet and sour chicken and sesame chicken for mains. Really enjoyed it and highly recommend a visit.

We had a delicious chinese meal here whilst visiting New York and wish we had time to go back and try more dishes. Very happy with the meal and lots yummy flavours to enjoy.

We walked in on a Tuesday around 6 pm, were seated right away. The dishes came out very quickly. All the dishes were delicious. Pork with long green pepper was spicy and tasty, both the fish dish and calamari were really good. The fish and pork dishes were a little bit of salty to my taste.

I really love coming to China River for a Dim Sum Dinner. Before an evening event, I just need a light meal and China River offers both full course meals and Dim Sum alternatives for something smaller. I had the Wonton Soup to start off with which was delicious. The Chicken broth was really rich and had four nice sized tender wontons in the soup which was the perfect way to start off the meal. For my Dim Sum meal, I ordered the Pan Fried Dumplings, the Vegetable Spring Rolls and the Shrimp Crystal Dumplings. Everything came out so perfectly cooked and spiced well. The Pan Fried dumplings were especially well cooked and tasted like they were homemade they were so tender and nicely fried. The Vegetable Spring rolls were perfectly fried and accented nicely by the Duck Sauce. The service was timely and the ladies here don't rush you. It is a nice place to go before the theater.

Great Chinese restaurant in the busy midtown theater district. Friendly and fast service, and the prices of the dishes were also pleasant. We needed a quick meal and opted for the lo mein with chicken along with dumplings with vegetables. Dishes tasted good and were served nice and hot.

We arrived late to NYC and this place was close to hotel. Food was good, but service not so much. I was surprised to find out steamed rice was extra and not included in the meal. But what did it for me was the automatic addition of a 20% tip. We were a party of 3 adults & 3 children. Was i taken with the “tourist” special?

Delicious food, customer service was excellent, kind and helpful. Great experience, awesome place, highly recommended.

They have a typical Chinese restaurant menu. We were there for lunch with friends. I had wonton soup and barbeque ribs (honey sauce). I liked both if not the best ever. I can't comment on atmosphere--we were in the bar which has no atmosphere but there is an upstairs room which we didn't see. Server was clueless: My items and the order of one of the other people were appetizer category items, the other two were entree items. So he brought the appetizer items first while the other 2 people had nothing, and then much later brought the entree items. Seeing the pattern, he should have asked if we wanted everything brought together. Still, if you're in the mood for Chinese in the Times Square area there are not many options and this is worth a try.

Our hotel concierge recommended this based on our request for good soup dumplings. They were very good. I also got ants climbing a hill which I would rate as a 3 on spicy level 1-5. So perfect for me. Almost all the customers were speaking Chinese which I always see as a good sign for a Chinese restaurant,

Excellent food and prices for NYC. It is rare I give a 5 star but for this type of restaurant it was wonderful, service great and food marvelous!

Late supper after theater performance. Great location and hours. Perfect stir fried green beans! Wonderful szechuan flavors of other chicken and veggie offering. Staff helpful with special request order. Recommended!

We were here several years ago & thought it was very good, but not now! We ordered Chicken corn soup that was the worst rice ever tasted. There were a “few” kernels of corn in the soup and even less chicken. The chicken was like petrified tiny nuggets of overcooked chicken. The Beef Chow Fun was also terrible- mostly noodles with very few veggies and it was “swimming” in grease. We will never go here again & Id recommend that you don’t either. The beef was over tenderized with no taste! Beware!

First time in NYC with my partner and after a long day of walking around we were cold and starving. Found this chinese restaurant to eat in and I’m glad we did - food was lovely and so were the staff! Quick and serving and taking orders, which is just what you want after a busy day in NYC.

Lovely staff and food was great! When ordering the staff were really polite and very accommodating. Service was really fast!

Looked for a nice Chinese meal on our last night in Manhattan before heading back to the UK. Saw this on trip advisor and decided to give it a try. Got there at 8pm and got a table no problem without booking. The welcome was friendly. We were guided with the menu as it certainly differed from what we were used to. The food was amazing. The flavours in the Sichuan style were fantastic. The hot and sour soup and the prawn crystal dumplings were a hit to start along with the duck. Then Singapore rice noodle, house special fried rice, hot crispy fried beef, salt and pepper jumbo prawns were all a real hit. The Sichuan prawns in hot sauce were very tasty but very hot be warned. Nice NZ sauvignon bland to wash it down with. Also a reasonable price considering the location. All together added to an amazing trip. Thoroughly recommended

While Szechuan wontons and 3 pepper chicken were pretty good, tiger pork was fatty and overly salty, soup dumpling were carelessly placed so that they stuck together, and scallion pancakes were a deep fried mess. Add a star if you need something quick, reasonably priced and passable in the theatre district.

Nice location Service was poor with rude and obviously fed up waitress . Food was below average with the spiced beef being anything but spiced and the vegetable chow mein tasteless. Place had a run down feel, looking slightly grubby and unloved

A quick call got us reservations at this busy restaurant which allowed us to immediately be seated. The menu is extensive. The hot and sour soup and the homemade dumplings were spectacular. The entrees are offered with white rice or brown rice. Fried rice may be ordered as an additional item. Both our entrees were delicious.

Very good place to eat. The manager was knowledgeable and helped us choose our dishes. Quiet reasonably priced for the area and the food was very tasty

Went in there as the place is just opposite Majestic theatre. Really authentic Sichuan food which was spicy but not salty. Service was good too. All in all good Chinese food and value for money..

We triwd several disches, especially chicken with broccoli, wonton soup and mixed vegetables. We enjoyed earing very much.

Decided to order Chinese take-out after a show (which ended ~10pm) from this place since it opens late (11pm). The show was across the street. Ordered “Sichuan Manor Fried Rice” - very good, “Beef Fried Chow Fun (wide noodles)” - noodle was all broken up in pieces & a bit on the bland side, “Crab Meat Soup with Asparagus” - used real crab meat and soup was tasty. Took about 15 minutes for order to be complete so it was pretty quick. Place was somewhat busy for ~10pm. Would go back again.

Tried Sichuan Manor for lunch because it was near theater. It is a new restaurant which still needs some ironing out. They have a lunch special during the week with good prices. Their dinner menu is expensive. Service was friendly and good. Spicy dishes were not too too spicy and portions were good. I was tempted to give it a 2 because the brown rice that came out was hard and dry. Seemed to be left over and had to be sent back. Ordered fried rice instead which was fine. The bathroom had no toilet paper and the alley you need to walk though to get in could use some sprucing up. It was explained that they couold not open the front doors in the winter because of the cold.

My co-workers and were heading to the Broadway show "Take Me Out" during a break in our work and were looking for someplace quick, good and relatively inexpensive to have lunch before the matinee. It was cold and snowing, so we weren't in the mood to be picky, so we dropped into a chinese place literally right next door to the Helen Hayes Theater (where the show is playing). It turned out to be a great random decision. The interior was warm and inviting, the staff was friendly and helpful .. and the food was tasty and plentiful. My co-workers ordered the Kung Po chicken and the beef with broccoli and were very happy with their choices. I ordered the mini soup dumplings and honey roast ribs off the dim sum menu ... and they were delightful! But be forewarned, wait a few minutes before trying to pop a soup dumpling into your mouth as they are VERY hot inside! It was a great way to start our day at the theatre!

This was hands down the best Chinese dinner I have ever eaten...in my life! We had the chicken and green beans with brown rice and the orange chicken. We started with green tea and the most delicious vegetable spring rolls I have ever had! This was conveniently located right next to the Frozen broadway show.

Stumbled upon this place on our way to a show and I’m so glad we did. The food has so much flavor. People are saying it’s a bit expensive but you are eating in Times Square in NYC so it’s sort of to be expected. I had the chicken and broccoli and it was the best I’ve ever had. Every dish has flavors usually not found in many Asian restaurants. Go now!

The food was Good quality but the service was out of sync. We got the starters at different times, then had to ask where the drinks had got to as we ordered all at once. We got the main course together then we were given the bill without asking and no one asked if we wanted a sweet?!?! It just felt very amateurish and hurried, it's a shame as the quality of the food was good, it was the service that spoiled our enjoyment. We won't be going back.

Nice restaurant with quick table service . Shared two meals with rice and was hot and quickly delivered which was good on first night in the city . Mongolian beef was very spicy but good and sweet and sour chicken was tasty.

Loved it! Great service and the food is pretty authentic! We had Peking Duck, Shrimp, and green beans all of which were delicious. I would definitely go back.

Really fancied a chinese and gave this place a try. We ordered veg noodles, Beef (black bean style sauce) and sweet and sour chicken and rice. The restaurant was fairly quiet which made a nice change to other busy restaurants in NYC. The food was hot and nice, I just felt it was a little bit pricey however the portions were big so cant complain.

Good Chinese place in the heart of Broadway. Excellent Dim sum, and good sized well priced dishes. I took the orange beef dish, and was good. Rice not included.

Dropped in for dinner for (hopefully) some decent Chinese food. Ordered steamed dumplings to start and two main dishes. Starters would take 10 minutes to prepare - no problem. Two main courses came separate so my wife was finished eating before my order came. Not acceptable! Smoked duck was terrible. Too dry and barely edible. I would not recommend this place at all.

Seems to be a newly opened restaurant, however with some good ambitions. for start we ordered dumplings in chili oil and springrolls, both was possible to improve in taste, they did not spice up the dumplings (would have been easy with some ginger/garlic) or even cilantro, same goes for the springrolls, great bite but lack taste. we did order Kung Pau and giant shrimps with lemon sauce, and this was actually really good !!

I stopped in China River for a late dinner after visiting the Met and what is nice is that it is on the way home just a block from the Port Authority. The restaurant is in the heart of the Theater District. It was twenty to ten when I got there, and the kitchen was about to close but they sat me and told me to take my time to order. It thought that was very nice of them. The waiter could not have been nicer. He had the food out in a timely basis and even changed my table so that I had better light and more room. I started with a pot of Chrysanthemum tea, which had a nice fragrant taste to it and hit the spot on a cold night. I ordered a bowl of Hot & Sour Soup which was one of the best I ever had. It was nice and spicy and full of slivers of vegetables and pork. It was a nice sized bowl that made a generous portion again perfect for a cold evening. I ordered Dim Sum for dinner and had the Fried Spring Rolls, the Crystal Shrimp Steamed dumplings and the Pan-Fried Pork Buns. Everything was perfectly cooked and served nice and hot. The Spring Rolls were fried and served with a Duck Sauce and full of fresh vegetables. The Pork Buns were filled with a ground pork blend that was nicely spiced. The Crystal Shrimp Dumplings were full of fresh shrimp and steamed nicely. Everything was delicious. The service was timely, and the waiter was so helpful and quick.

Found this spot around the corner from my hotel. Fried rice and spring rolls were delicious. Simple. Reasonable prices.

We stumbled upon this place as we were staying nearby. We were seated right away. We weren't starving so we shared an appetizer and entree. It was more than enough for my daughter and myself. We started with pork dumplings which were delicious! Then had sweet and sour chicken. Rice is extra. We opted for just white rice since there was a huge price difference between white and fried ($2 for white/ $14 for fried). We thought everything was good! Service was a bit slow but we weren't in a hurry so we didn't mind.

We arrived at 6 to have a meal before a play. The place seemed kind of empty at first. We were seated right away but by 6:30 the place was full. We had the steamed veggie dumplings, the beef with broccoli and the three-pepper chicken. All were well prepared and fresh. The beef with broccoli was particularly good.

We enjoyed a great meal here. Portions were just right. We ordered the pork with pancakes and the server was kind enough to roll them for us. She did better with spoons than I ever could! Tasty dim sum and appetizers as well. Very reasonably priced as well. Staff was pleasant and helpful.

This is spot had the most horrible customer service I don’t know what was going on with the bartender that night or the host that took online orders on 5/1/2024 I came in their at 9:20 pm looking to sit down and eat for a few minutes and they tried to rush me out very rudely i even said I would be okey with take out because of this I changed my mind I should be able to sit down and order my food and have the same experience as if I were to Walk in at 9:40 so I walked out and before I could leave I hear your staff laughing hysterically like that was so funny I don’t even know how they got a job in anything involved in customer service and the manager should be definitely be on top of this, this behavior shouldn’t be in a work place especially a restaurant

we were seeing a play across the street, popped in for a quick bite and a beer, sat at the bar, ordered the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings, they took a while to come but were very good and had a cool presentation. all the food server around us looked really good too!

My friend and I tried China River after seeing the Broadway show Dear Evan Hansen. I had the Hot and sour soup which I would rate as OK. We shared the Fried Noodle Combination with Beef, chicken and shrimp and an order of the Orange chicken. The orange chicken was not much better than you can get at Panda express which I like. The food seemed "Americanized" and not authentic Chinese. I think you can find better Chinese in NYC.

Noticed this place while in line for John's Pizza next door. Thought we would give it a try the following night. No lines, good service and the food was good too. A lot to choose from on the menu. Most patrons around us actually were using chopsticks to eat, food just goes everywhere except my mouth if I try to use them (yes they bring forks and spoons). Some items on the menu were not what you find on a typical local take out place, so I am going to assume this is supposed to be an authentic Chinese restaurant. We enjoyed our meal here enough that we came back another night. Avoided the lines at the touristy places.

Food was very good with prompt service. Pork dumplings one of the best we have ever had. Had Scallops and shrimp with spicy garlic sauce, chicken and cashews, and Cellophane noodles with pork we all delicious with great presentation. Recommend!

First time at this restaurant. Everything was delicious! Had several appetizers; the crystal shrimp dumplings, salt and pepper squid, chicken wings, and dumplings in hot oil. For the entree I had the Kung Pao Chicken with Peanuts. It’s u like the usual Kung Pao because it doesn’t come with the usual carrots and celery. It was really delicious with the chicken being very tender. A warning! It is very spicy hot, which I enjoy.

Great dinner, excellent… Meal service top, the food is delicious. Meal with friends was super generous and the portion was magnificent. I recommend well done

We visited for a late lunch around 3 PM and the menu for dinner offerings and prices but perhaps that is just because it was a Sunday. The restaurant was clean, the décor was fine, the service was prompt and the food was just okay. It was pricey for lunch. Portion size was moderate. We shared the steak with broccoli and the steak tasted odd-not bad --but not good.

Stopped in after a show and were seated right away. Very huge menu. We started off sharing dumplings which were very good. Entrees of chicken and noodles were also delicious and very well prepared. Prices are reasonable for the area, with seafood being among the most expensive items. Service was very good and the atmosphere pleasant. Definitely would return.

I think this place is now called China River ? Visited here whilst staying in NY and because it was close to our theatre. It’s a typical Chinese restaurant, massive menu choice, friendly staff and not overly expensive considering it is in NY. Food was hot and tasty but nothing out of the ordinary and nowhere near as good as our usual Chinese back home in the UK.

We came in here after a bus trip to Harlem. We were not disappointed. The food was fabulous although the portion sizes were very big as everything is in New York! Service was fantastic and very quick. Definitely worth a visit!

Just as going to visit NYC is a satisfying experience for us, so was finding and savoring Sichuan food in this city. We love Sichuan flavors and were fortunate that this place was literally a stone’s throw away from the Schubert Theater where we had attended a show – in fact, it was almost directly across the theater, right on 44th Street. This Restaurant was obviously a newcomer here – as noted by the sloppily posted “Grand Opening” signs in front of the place. It was fairly empty when we arrived at 6 PM. The entrance through a long dimly lit passageway almost made us turn around twice since we were unsure that we were even entering the right place. Granted that this is in a busy area of NYC, but they still need to fix this major turn-off aspect. If they want to stay in business, they need to make that entryway more welcoming to their customers. The Storefront is so unassuming that we almost missed the place while walking by. We only found it because we were specifically looking for it. Upon entering, we noticed that the ambiance was definitely lacking, but the Bar area was pleasant enough, and the people were very polite. It was the food, however, when it arrived, that really surprised us. It was plated nicely, displayed attractively, served hot and steaming, and came in generous portions. Our dishes were spicy and tasty, but were not the mouth-numbing peppery Sichuan that we are accustomed to. They had just enough flavor to distract the four of us from the lack of atmosphere around us. We had stayed with the basics and ordered Fish Filet Tasty Pot, Sizzling Chicken with Hot Green Peppers, Kung Pao Chicken and the House Special Fried Rice. We couldn’t believe we actually finished everything. For accompanying drinks, two of us ordered the Lychee Martinis, one got the Mai Tai and the fourth got the Chardonnay. All-in-all, it was a nice dinner for the price. Worth a try.

Overall, the place has fine Chinese food. Nothing to write home about, except for the size of the check - write home to get money wired to your bank account. It was not cheap. We had the soup dumplings (Xia long bao). They were very large and soupy - good job. I had to ask for the ginger with the vinegar, though - you're not dealing with a tourist here. Hot and sour soup was good and a large bowl, even for one. Mixed vegetables were in spicy sauce. The beef Lo mein was ok, beef was a little chewy. Sautéed string beans with garlic minced was flavorful and not over cooked. MaPo tofu (I asked for it spicy) was a very generous helping and was truly spicy. Jasmine tea comes in a clear kettle with strained tea leaves - Nice job! Everything is quite oily, so beware if you aren't going to be near a bathroom for the few hours afterwards. In other words, avoid this restaurant before a long show as that oil is going to want to find its way out soon after your meal. Solid Chinese option for the theater district, but, again, it is expensive for Chinese with no weekend lunch specials. The music playing in the background ranged from techno to goth to top 40. I'm not sure what vibe they are trying to get here; pick a theme and stick with it. Also, fix your broken glass door. A well-maintained restaurant is much more appealing. It was pretty empty for a pre-theater crowd during a Saturday lunch time.

DO NOT EAT HERE WHATEVER YOU DO DONT EAT HERE!!! Not only did my food arrive almost 20 minutes late, cold, and wrong but the delivery driver held my food hostage because he wanted a bigger tip when I wouldn’t give him one he began to berate me in the lobby of my hotel and call me a N****r in front of dozens of witnesses. The delivery driver works directly for this restaurant. So imagine if their driver is racist what are they!
Not fancy, really good food
This seems like a neighborhood hole-in-the-wall but located right in the center of the Theater District, it was not crowded, it was comfortable and my friends and I thought the food was great! Kung Pao shrimp, noodles with vegetables, sautéed baby bok chow; all delicious! We went a little off usual pre- or post-theater time and got seated immediately. I highly recommend as long as you are looking for a casual place.
