Great food and good prices

By abitx |

Great food and good prices. The portions are enough to share or take home for later. The dinner specials come with soup, egg roll or wonton, entree, rice, & side item. They have the best sesame chicken, egg fui yung, sweet and sour shrimp, and egg drop soup. Not much atomosphere but the food is too-die-for.

The Dark Star (but no storm troopers here).

From the parking lot the big China Star sign looms large over the parked cars like the salt water worn and faded name on the side of some old dockside merchant ship. .I.e., I think the restaurant has been here for a while. I had to check twice to make sure we were in the right place upon entering as the speak easy level of the interior light had us quickly doffing our sun glasses or risk bumping into the furnishings. New diners entering the place would send a short burst of searing sunshine through the dining room . And to read the menu, I was fortunate enough to have a flashlight app on my cell phone. We were quickly seated by a young Asian girl, our waitress, that I nicknamed Mercury. During the meal the service she provided was nothing less than fleet of foot and, showing my age, more like a 45 lp playing at 78 rpms. This description applies to both motion and speech which was not displeasing as proferred with a smile. The interior looked a little tired and worn, but it was in keeping with the era from which the prices were established on the lunch menu. Where do you get a glass of tea for $93 and most plates for under $5 or $6!!! The hot and sour and wonton soups were good and very usual. The egg rolls were also good although they were a slimline version; rather the size of the spring rolls usually served by Vietnamese restaurants. The fried rice was unusual in that it was very moist and did not seem fried at all. The beef lo-mein noodles were good, but the beef was a little tasteless. The Mongolian beef was seasoned well in its brown sauce, but the meat could have been a little more tender. And the serving size . . . let's just say that if you leave the place hungry either you are Adam Richman or it's your own damn fault. I would venture to say that if the restaurant does not change its prices, continues to save on electricity, and maintains the same ambiance, it will probably be here for another 30 years or however long it has already been in this location.

Plenty of Food for the Money

The egg drop soup was delicious. But overall, just ok. It's actually a very busy little place. Probably because you get lots of food for $5.09. Service was average, but the server was attentive to our special requests. We ordered Sweet tea. The server brought regular tea and suggested we use the sugar and sweetener packets to sweeten the drink. That's never the same as when it is brewed with sugar. If he would have told us that up front, we probably would not have ordered tea. Fried rice was more like steamed rice with some coloring. Not at all what I'd call "fried rice." Sweet and Sour Pork was just ok. My wife said her Cashew Chicken was very good. You get so much food, you will likely need a take-home box. Once was probably enough for us.

An unbelievable amount of food for $5.99 dinner special! The food was good, although the hot and sour soup was a little sweet for my taste. But for that price, I'm sure we will return many times!

Huge Meals

Have been there a few times. Don't go for the atmosphere, but it is clean. For $5.99 I ordered Lemon chicken, which had fried rice, won ton soup, side of sweet and sour pork, and roll. It was stacked high. Couldn't finish it. Got a to-go container, and I filled it with all the chicken I couldn't finish. So, had to get another, to-go container. At the checkout counter, I watched over 20 take-out orders being picked up. Even my friend could not finish her meal!!

Found a gem

Don't let the exterior fool you . It may look like a restaurant that would be in a 90's martial arts movie . The food is divine & cheap . Although I was put off by the building & decor . I was pleasantly surprised @ how good the food is . I had the combination lunch plate . Combo lo mein , lemon chicken , fried rice, & egg with wonton soup . I started off with a cup of wonton soup . The broth tasted beautifully with the wonton which felt like silk in my mouth . The lemon chicken was fried to a perfect crisp & actually made the crunching sound when I bit into it . The lo mein was so good !! Topped it off with an egg roll & fried rice . It was a little bit warm inside . They could definitely use a remodel . The food is excellent & I will be back

Wonderful

One of the few places in San Antonio that actually puts spice in the Chinese food. The sesame chicken is spicy with a hint of sweet. Wonderful. The Lo Mein also had just the right amount of spice. Flavorful. Been eating here for 7 years, never had a bad dish. Have tried other dishes through the years, all good.
