Good Northern Italian restaurant

By KSH50 |

My wife and I stopped there because it was close to our hotel. Well worth the visit. The torrtellini as an appetizer was great, and the fish (branzino) and veal main courses tasted fine. The Italian cheesecake for dessert was also good. Prices, for Manhattan, were reasonable

continues to be very good traditional Italian

By Louis G |

Hadn't been there for awhile. The same high quality and hovering staff remain. The sel3ection is a traditional wide selection of Italian favorites. Around corner from STudio 54

Very Nice

By Karen R |

My sisters and I so thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the food and the waiters...and owners too. They were attentive, kind and delivered a wonderful food experience. Thank you! The ONLY problem I had was that the waiter would NOT allow my sister and I to split a meal. That seemed unfair...not sure if it was house policy or that our waiter wanted a BIGGER tip..seemed suspicious. Or to order a bunch of things to split...not a good policy!

Need more front of house help

By Pamela K |

The food at this little restaurant is very nice. But it seems that there is a head waiter who speaks passable English and he has a herd of helpers. It's not working. We were seated in a nearly empty restaurant 30 minutes before a rush of customer's for the shows. We watched thankfully, we already had our order in. We watched as a nearby table who was seated well after us was offered coffee and desert after their meal. We were not offered either. It was a bad ending to an otherwise good meal.

Eh

This restaurant was mediocre, nothing to write home about. Their prices were not outrageous for the area. The atmosphere was ok, like an old traditional Italian restaurant.

Food excellent but expensive

By Richard B |

This restaurant looked fr0m the outside a top quality Italian restaurant and in some ways it was. Each of our selections lived up to expectations. I love a good Bolognese and what I enjoyed on the night was up there with the best. We found prices over the top and it sticks in my throat that service charges are so high and you do not have the option to pay less when service is average. The restaurant was cold and tables were positioned on top of one another with limited privacy. We thought our visit would have been better but sadly it was not.

Great Eats

Loved this food

By Jessica R |

Spending a night in a hotel for work and was so tired. Just wanted something good. Caesar salad was amazing and so was my penne vodka. Loved both. Highly recommend.

Amazing experience

By segallant |

We picked this restaurant without any knowledge about it on a Friday night during the Christmas holiday. We were a party of 10. We had a great night....loved our server Bruno. He made fantastic suggestions and everyone loved their meal. The pork chop special was fabulous. The service was prompt but not rushed and the wait staff was attentive. We would definitely return.

Great spot on 8th

By Gary N |

Wandered into this place for a late night bite and what a find it was. The staff were outstanding and super helpful. We didn’t need the menu because the staff offered us all kind of dishes that were off the menu and when we finally settled on Ravioli we were not disappointed. By far one of the best pasta dishes ever! Do yourself a favour and hit this place up when you’re in NYC!

Great Italian Restaurant

By bookwormcarrie |

Loved all of our meal. Waiters were attentive. Food was excellent. Loved the atmosphere and decor. Will definitely retuen.

OK food but bad waiters

By zebragorda |

This place has not gotten the memo: the old rude New York is gone in favor of the tourist friendly one.Dont go there

Nice find!

By nhhaig |

Recommended by our nearby hotel- lovely find- cozy setting, great table, fantastic food and excellent service- will return-

Watch out for the hidden service charge..

By Former_Sun_Dodger |

This is a busy little restaurant which is usually a good sign - I don’t mind being crammed in if the food and service are good. The former was pretty good to be fair, with a very tender beef fillet, not that we could see much of it as the lighting was so dim!! The Chablis was passable too and a pretty reasonable price, especially for New York. The service however was frankly comical - our waiter would not have seemed out of place in an episode of Fawlty Towers. Struggling with the language somewhat he wasn’t particularly funny though, especially when we were ultimately presented with a hand-scrawled bill to which he had added an unmarked 18% service charge. As nothing was itemised on the bill this could easily have gone unnoticed, thus incurring a double charge. That is unforgivable in this day and age, so be wary if you choose to eat here. Lunch may be a better option, rather than dinner, perhaps?

Fabulous authentic neighborhood Italian restaurant

By Andrew H |

Great place ,nice ambience .Had the mussels (excellent) followed by veal saltimbocca .Tiramisu for dessert.my wife had salad followed by spaghetti carbonara really great.

A bit better than average, and a good choice for a pre-show meal

By rgstrip |

We enjoyed our lunch before seeing the play "Sweat" this Saturday. We liked the service, the wine, the salads and the pasta (rigatoni with Italian bacon) dish we had before the show. Not anywhere near world-class, but as a default (we simply happened upon it, saw the menu outside, and went inside) place before a show. The room is pretty and our waiter was colorful. Lunch was $75 before tip, and that included two drinks, two salads, a bowl of soup and we shared a pasta dish. The bread was nice, too. So, would I go here again? Yes....but I might try something new next time I find myself in the theater district.

Great Italian restaurant in Hells Kitchen

By thomas b |

We eat at this restaurant every year on our annual trip to NYC. Great service and very good food. We have had multiple pasta dishes and all are delicious. I had hand made ravioli with a vodka cream sauce which was incredible. They have a full bar and the tiramisu is made in house and not to be missed. They have a great wine selection if you have a preference for wine over mixed drinks.

Biggest disappointment ever

By Maija R |

Terrible place! Food was not good. Pizza came from a refridgerater and costed a lot. Coca cola had no sparkles and it was lame. The bill was handwritten and really unclear. Really bad service. Woman in the next table vomited in the table after eating. Can`t recommend to anyone.

Very good basic Italian fare

By akjane71 |

Simply delicious and a great atmosphere. Prices and portions were reasonable and the wait staff was very helpful. There wasn't anything in particularly fancy about the meal but everything was just good!

Great location

By Caesar A |

Our visit wasn't planned, but we were looking to get out of the rain on NewYears Eve..We went into a mellow lighted restaurant..seated and enjoyed our meal..the menu was varied within the Italian cuisine fare..our wait staff was attentive and efficient .also amusing in caustic manner..two of our party had the stuffed mushrooms with vegetables as an appertif, our friend chose a hearty bowl of lentil soup ..for our main course we chose the chicken gardienier..very tasty and satisfying portion..guest chose clams with butter and lemon..she even ordered another portion..we were given as a table a basket of taste bread and butter..with our coffee and hot tea we also indulged in some decadent dessert ..Tiramisu and a ice cream torte..Delicious..we were very pleased with our experience.. The tip is included in the price. We tip twice.

Very disappointed!!

By Nicola T |

Didn’t get a very warm welcome! We’re sat on a table squashed together with other diners, the waiter was in such a hurry to serve our drinks that he spilt it all over my son.. to which the waiter responded well it won’t hurt you will it.. no!!!!! But an apology would have been nice... the dinner.. after waiting over 45 minutes for a lasagne and a pasta bolognese and two pizzas, the lasagne had to be sent bk the mince was white and tasted like a mouth of saw dust.. no apology from the waiter he just gave a tut and snatched it off the table! pizza was ok not much base and we were charged 37 dollars for each one!! Over all probably walk by and give this one a miss! There is far nicer Italian restaurants in nyc that don’t charge 37 dollars for a bit of bread cheese n tomato

Nice place for pre-Theatre dinner

By Hammerin4u56 |

My wife and I are in NYC for a quick overnight and were taking in MIss Saigon. We are staying in Times Square and decided to walk uptown and just find an Italian place for dinner pre-show. We just stumbled across Da Tommaso, which was around the corner from the Broadway Theatre. Very nice, little, genuine place - with mostly locals, which was a good sign. I had an incredible stuffed pork chop, and my wife had a very nice (and different) lasagna. Good food, good service - a great find.

Great find

By Explorer2606 |

This is truly a great authentic Italian restaurant - very retro/time warp in design but the staff are great and the food too good for words. Will certainly be returning.

Amazing food but don’t like being ripped off.

By Dale |

Our 4th time back here the food was amazing & the service is very good... but feel like they try ripping you off which is a shame as we loved coming to this place every year for last 4 years... When asked for the check/bill it’s not very straight forward to understand.. written in pencil and didn’t make much sense so paid it anyway, my wife noticed was a little on the steep side so I questioned was the tip included.... the waiter played dumb and came across to not to be able to understand my simple question and made out he couldn’t speak much English (strange) so I asked another waiter was it included in the check and after a brief stand off he admitted it was included.... we don’t have a problem with tipping at all but these underhanded tactics don’t wash with us and will not be coming back. I dread to think how many people have fallen for this!!

Old-World Italian Charm

By Sue B |

We happened on this restaurant by accident, but what a find. The waiters have all the old-world charm and style. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. The portions are generous. The atmosphere warm and friendly. I grew up in NYC, and it was so lovely to see that I could still enjoy this kind of family-owned dining experience.

Basic Italian restaurant.

By Ian_ncl |

Basic Italian restaurant. Dimly lit. Kept waiting for table whilst they tried to sort out leaving customers coats. Waiters were eccentric, but not necessarily in a good way. Food was overpriced for what it was. Beware of the price of the specials, ask first!

Great Caesar Salad

By Sharon Kay |

It was a fabulous Caesar salad. Good service. Good price. Excellent lasagna. The atmosphere is pure New York, Godfather style. I expected Michael Corleone and Captain McCluskey to walk in any minute. I definitely recommend.

Neighborhood find!

By TravelgirlsTennessee |

Went for dinner on a recommendation from a friend. we got a seat in the window, which was fun for people watching. We had some great Caesar salads and I had a shrimp special which was amazing and my hubs had a lasagna as big as his plate! Our server was a typical old world Italian was was funny and made the evening even more fun.

Disappointing

By Shane R |

We dined here about 9.30pm, on the recommendation of our concierge. The greeting from the staff was not warm and the staff seemed more intent on finishing their shift than providing a pleasant experience. The food was OK without being really good. The house red wine was very good. Overall, We did not think it was worth the price and the included 20% included tip.

The mozzarella salad is excellent

By Patbro |

Our server was "Crazy Bruno" and he was a charmer! The food All food was excellent, the atmosphere intimate and relaxed, and the dessert terrific! It's small - make a reservation - you won't be sorry!

Excellent Food in Old World Italian Setting

By ChristineDeLisle |

This intimate Italian restaurant offers an expansive menu and specials of the day. Everything we had was perfectly done. Fresh oysters, spaghetti bolognese, veal scallopini and lemon trout. Absolutely delicious! Close to Studio 54 and other Broadway theatres.

Good Food, Mediocre Service

By Becky D |

We loved the food at this restaurant. That is the last nice thing I can say. Our waiter was pompous, there was deep water on the bathroom floor, and there are no refills on $4 soft drinks. Boom, there it is all spelled out for you. Your best bet is to order the food to go, if that is even an option.

Just o.k.

By Christine D |

We had an early dinner here after a show. It was just o.k, nothing out of the ordinary. Our waiter seemed impatient while taking our order, although the place was half empty. After our salads, our waiter started arguing in the bar area with other staff about one of them picking up a check from a nearby table. We could hear all of it. His argument spilled into the dining room so we continued to hear his objections. It pretty much ruined any atmosphere. We ate and left without coffee or dessert.

My favorite!

By MonMon31 |

I love this restaurant. Yes it's crowded and maybe a little noisy, but it's New York! Get the veal in lemon sauce, or splurge and have the Dover sole! It was the best I've ever had. The cannoli is also a must!

Nice quiet Italian restaurant

By entucasa |

It is always a treat to go into a restaurant that will have white linen cloths and napkins It is also a treat to be music less so that you can have a conversation and not have to compete with loud music that drowns out conversation. The food was excellent, more than sufficient and well priced

ITALIAN cuisine!?

By michela s |

I didn't put 0 just because it's not possible. Be wary of "traditional Italian cuisine" because it has nothing to do with it. 1. Less than 5 minutes after ordering, the dishes arrived clearly previously cooked and reheated on the fly. Canned sauce, tortellini in tasteless broth (6 in number), chicken breast cooked who knows how many hours before. 2. Value for money equal to 0. 3. Crazy prices for dishes that are borderline edible. 4. Not to mention the rudeness of the owner and the fact that he presented us with the bill written in pencil on a sheet of paper, deciding that we should pay him a $20 tip. BAD.

Terrible

By C A |

Just a place to avoid. It is an 'Italian' restaurant where nobody is Italian, and the food certainly doesn't even look similar to Italian food. The waiters are extremely rude. In our case I pointed out that the menu inside was completely different from the one outside, and they insisted against evidence that they were the same. Pasta was completely overcooked, and the sauce clearly came from a jar. The check is probably the most interesting part of the meal, and we where charged 79 dollars for two plates of terrible pasta, one glass of house wine and two bottles of sparkling water. They add, without explanation, about 20% for 'service', most likely because they know that nobody would otherwise leave them a tip. A tourist trap, with extremely poor food, unbelievably rude waiters, and prices that have no correlation with the tragic quality of the meals served.

Homemade Goodness

By lmlaprise |

Came to the city for a conference, and after long day of travel, trip from airport and checkin we found this place just down the street from our hotel. Intimate, small space made the experience feel authentic. Four gentleman canvased to room to make sure all diners were having a good dining experience. We got the mozzarella, tomato and basil appetizer great with the balsamic vinegar. The homemade ricotta and spinach ravioli was awesome. The tomato sauce was prefect, not too sweet or acidic. Of course there was a bread basket...save it to wipe up the sauce. Thanks for filling our bellies after a long day of travels.

Better for adults

By Traveler576952 |

Because of the location and the ability to make reservations we went here after seeing Wicked. They don’t have kids menu but they were nice and split an order of spaghetti in 1/2 for my two kids to share. The pasta was okay nothing special. If I was there without kids I would consider going back. But I wouldn’t bring the kids again.

Mafia

By gaby s |

First of all the food was ok. Not perfect but fine, if you sit with your family you do not leave because of the bad fibes. Another table left suddenly because of a problem with the food and were obviously not happy with the bill. Later in we understood why. We ate 2 courses with four and payed for the meal incl 1 bottle of wine (28 euro) and 1 soft drink 132 usd. On top of this we paid 12,85 usd of serveice tax and 29 usd! Service. A tol of 185usd for not special food. We were upset by the usd 42 bonus (30%) they gave themselves and we were obiged to pay. It felt like being in a bad episode of an italian b movie in the seventies. The waiter blew is nose several times while serving his dishes in his serviet which he put back on his shoulder after having cleaned his nose. All in all it,s a complete with a nasty discussion about the dodgy bill and extra unexpected extra costs. Advise? Stay away and go to any onther place in New York where you eat much better at much better price!

Only for the italian family

By 190479Okr |

The service was very slow, and the food didn't really taste much. I had a soup and pasta with white clam sauce. The soup was like dishwater, it didn't taste bad but not very good either. The taste of the pasta and clam sauce was neutral as well. Even the italian wine, the Montalcino, was less tasty than normal montalcinos. The atmosphere was very good though, so this place obviously attracts the regular family.

Great Location

By Mgruen2 |

We just returned from New York and I must say this is a Hidden Gem. we stayed at the Marriott courtyard some 800 feet away. The bartender suggested this restaurant and we went. Twice!! First night we sat at a table for two just inside the front door. The restaurant was not busy when we got there but is was when we left. you are very close to the theater district so plan for a busy restaurant on the weekends. My wife had a seafood plate and I had the veal Parmesan. Great service, great bottle of wine. the service was perfect. The restaurant has a good selection of wine, and the food menu is full of selections. We ended up gong back on our last day for lunch. My wife had another seafood dish with shrimp, scallops, and mussels. I had the recommended stuffed pork chop!!! Excellent! I recommend a stop at this restaurant.

Rip off drink prices

By Derek H |

Went there with my wife last night on holiday from U.K. Ordered a bottle of Kaliber lager, A cranberry juice, and a bottle of water. My wife felt unwell while we were looking at the menu so I told the waiter we were sorry but we'd have to leave and asked for the bill. He told me it would be $30 for the 3 drinks! I challenged him about this but he told me it was correct - he eventually gave me a bill for $26.90 which we reluctantly paid and we left feeling ripped off & very unhappy. We obviously won't be returning and felt he'd shot himself in the foot as we certainly would have gone back another night if he hadn't ripped us off.....

Horrible and expensive restaurant and cheating with the bill

By Marie Christine T |

I ate at the restaurant New Year’s Eve. It looked really nice and it was very crowded. The food was very bad and the waiters were not polite. They didn’t tell the drink prices and they gave themselves 20% tips without asking. We can’t recommend this place. Stay away from this restaurant.

Worst customer service & food

By Helpless |

The service from the beginning was rushed & spotty. We asked for oil & balsamic vinegar, waited 15 minutes & then asked the water boy for it & he delivered. The food was poor quality & didn’t taste like chicken. (I’m allergic to veal & beef, pork) When the server brought the bill it said Veal picatta and he charged me $10 over my order. When I asked him he said I ordered Veal Piccata & I said I ordered Chicken Piccata. He said No you ordered Veal Piccata. I told him I am allergic to Veal & then he changed the bill to reflect chicken piccata. I asked to talk to manager & he said the server changed the bill but I told him I was allergic to Veal & the server said he served me Veal. The manager said no he served me chicken piccata. My bill should have been $44. without tax & the bill was $52.90. The manager was arguing with me & didn’t adjust the bill. Then a gay guy next to us attacked me saying I was exerting my white privilege. The food was poor & customer service horrible. I have allergic reactions to Veal & it is not something to take lightly. I will never return to this establishment & be careful if you have food allergies that may cause you hospitalization.

Excellent Italian Food

By jeffmeck7 |

Da Tommaso’s chefs cook only authentic Italian food that is simply outstanding on every level. On top of this is terrific service, which makes this restaurant well worth eating at. My favorite appetizer is the Muscles Marinara in a white wine sauce and one serving is simply not enough. Favorite entire is chicken parmigiana over spaghetti, which undoubtedly is the best entree on their menu and their spaghetti is so deliciously prepared that I always ask for an extra portion because I just can’t get over how luxuriously tasting it is. Definitely eat st this excellent establishment. JM

If you are used to nice Italian cooking... do not go

By Alex C |

The restaurant was apparently frequented by local people, which usually is a good sign. People serving water and waiters were pretty nice ... we had to wait for a long while though.. I had linguine alle vongole.. i cannot believe that the person who made it is a cook ! I would recommend he looks at a recipe so that the pasta cooks in the vongole sauce, to taste as it should taste. By default, a 20% tip was put on the bill, which we did not agree to settle.. When I complained, one of the waiters said « we are the best in NY, we do not need you ... » How is that !?

What a shame !!!

By Mickaël Mathion |

I can sum up our visit for the dinner by: "what the hell is this ?" Prices not clearly displayed on the menu. Quality not adequate with the price. Tips forced without agreement. 10$ for a bottle of water. A salad containing 2 slices of tomato and onion for 9$. I do not recommend at all this restaurant. Expensive, bad quality and not fully honest.

Ones probably good but now ready for Chef Ramsey

By TomWildenburg |

I must admit. My wife and daughter thought it was just avarage. I found it aweful. If you watch the series of Gordon Ramsey in the US kitchens: this is a top candidate. I had chicken that was straught out of the microwave. Old, sour and not good. Didn’t eat it all. I’ll save the whole episode but be sure that this is really a place ready to serve tourists that wouldn’t return .

Cosy Italian restaurant close to Times Square

By JohnvanHoudt |

Excellent, tasty Italian food served in large portions. Loved the mussels, prosciutto wrapped shrimp and the "fall off the bone" Osso Bucco Service was prompt but not too friendly.

Somewhat strange

By corkpop |

Went for lunch we were the only people in the place at 1:30 on a Friday no less. Ecuadorian waiter at first took us for tourists. No lunch menu just a la carte which was surprising. Wine list had some passable pouilly fuissé and chablis for 38$. Dishes were old school about 25$ each. Nothing to write home about. We were quite happy in our solitude, scallopini vitello marsala was OK, halibut good, soup and salad OK. The deal here is no aperitifs, drink tap water, skip coffee and dessert. Wines reasonably priced. But with the add ons and the up charges you'll end up over paying for what you get. The 5 star reviews here must come from less demanding less traveled diners. The fact that a restaurant in this neighborhood is empty for Friday lunch tells it all.

BELLISSIMO

By Keke L |

Italy on 8Th. The rain caused my friend Gerald and I to run into the nearest restaurant. In doing so we experienced the best in Italian Cuisine and hospitality. Our server, Fabricio was patient, offered excellent eye contact and knew the day's specials like a well rehearsed script. Fabricio also spoke to me in Italian and English, giving me the chance to both practice my Italian (hehehe) and add to the ambiance of the evening. The evening he was wonderful. We ordered the Polenta with mushrooms (excellent), Eggplant Parmigian, Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli and Pasta with tomato and Basil, (I could not taste any Basil) Everything was delicious. The ends of the Ravioli was a little too thick but otherwise very good. I strongly suggest the Eggplant. Enjoy if you go and tell, Fabricio, hello for me will ya. :)

Be aware - Boring food, surprise charges

By Jsshane |

Added 20% service charges and a glass of soft drinks come out of a pipe for 5$++... No thank you !! As an Italian restaurant, the pastas taste really boring for 18$++... I will definitively spend it somewhere else for better food quality. Ciao !!!!!

Nickle and dimed

By RLiotta |

We went to Da Tomasso on February 18 with a party of 7. It was very crammed inside. I ordered the stuffed pork chop special and wanted to substitute pasta instead of the potato. The pork chop was fantastic but I was charged $9.50 extra for the pasta. It wasn't even good. My son ordered the fettuccini alfredo and asked for a side of shrimp. He got 5 shrimp and we were charged $14 extra. My 5 year old wanted milk. They brought milk in a wine glass and we were charged $4 for that glass of milk. All our main entrees were delicious but these extra charges were over the top. Will think twice about coming back.

An amazing meal!

By Barbara R |

This restaurant was an accidental find. And boy are we glad we found it. The restaurant has a small-town family restaurant feel. It’s obvious that they have regulars that they know well. We started with the prosciutto and melon, which is a nice, light appetizer. I had the veal saltimbocca, which was amazing. Absolutely perfect. The chicken Romano my husband got was an excellent dish. We will definitely dine here when we are in town again.

Old school - dated but cozy interior - quiet meal on a Sunday

By Lackerfollow |

Authentic, old school Italian restaurant. Very flavorful, well prepared, and with a cozy )like your sitting in an Italian grandmother's dining room) atmosphere. Tony Soprano could have walked in at any minute. For lunch we had 4 entrees, 2 salads to share and no drinks and the bill came to $155 without tip- more than we were expecting. Recommend for quiet atmosphere with older group of customers.

Daughter's Engagement Dinner

By LOUIE815 |

What a hidden gem,Small intimate place with GREAT food and better service...I WOULD GO BACK IN A HEARTBEAT...

tourist trap

By Stefan A |

Don't drink water here. Its 10$ a bottle, easily the most expensive water in NYC! A tourists trap. We were then presented with a large tip on the bill... Food was just average. Do yourself a favor and try a different Italian restaurant instead.

Homey elegance

By Rita E |

Enjoyed my first time here. My dining companions were late and the server handled the situation beautifully, even as the restaurant filled. Superb Lentil Soup. My entree and companions' -- all great. Disappointed that "kir" wasn't a concept the waiter knew and it was just OK. Bread could have been better. Many customers were obviously regulars, which says a lot in an area with many choices.

Great meal, friendly atmosphere

By vacationer12389 |

We decided to try this restaurant on a cold, rainy evening and found a warm, friendly atmosphere. The servers were very good, they were attentive but not pushy - when you wanted them, they were there, but otherwise they left us to enjoy our meals. The food was also excellent. We shared the carpaccio starter, followed by veal parmigiana for my wife and a cheese tortellini dish for me. The prices were reasonable and the portions were great - enough that we left feeling full but not over stuffed. Overall, it was a great meal.

Well prepared Italian food in a comfortable setting

By Susan G |

Visited on a Thursday night pre theatre with friends. Service was prompt, food was well prepared and served piping hot. Real menus, hand written check, friendly service. Modestly priced. Good choice for this part of the theater district.

Small but good place in NYC

By Carole S |

We arrived early because we had theatre to go to, but the waiters accommodated us. The wine list is extensive. Wait service was polite and friendly. My daughter had a vegetarian meal which was good. The salad was enormous. My chicken was very well prepared.

Homemade pasta!

By 8636travel |

We came across this lovely Italian restaurant without reservations and they sat us immediately. The Croatian server was a fantastic person! Very knowledgeable of their food and fun to talk with! Delicious homemade pastas; food is a little pricey for portion size but the quality was superb so I didn’t mind it.

Good Food, Large Portions

By DeDe B |

This restaurant had been recommended to us by friends from home and was very close to our hotel. We split a chicken special and a pasta special, along with a salad. The portions were large and we could have easily split one entree. The service was good and so was the food. We liked the atmosphere- a comfortable neighborhood restaurant. It was busy- filled with locals. Will return here next time we are in NYC.

Nice little Italian..........

By Graham H |

Arrived early but with no booking and easily accommodated 6 of us. Friendly helpful and attentive staff who put on a first class spread of tasty enjoyable food. Cost average but food and service above average in our experience

Delightful Experience!

By Don M |

Arrived in NYC on a cold and rainy Super Bowl Sunday afternoon and want a quiet place to dine before settling into our hotel. Da Tommaso hit the spot. Service was attentive. Food was well prepared. My veal saltimboca was wonderful. My wife's pasta and shrimp dish left nothing to be desired. This was perfect for us and just about a block from our hotel.

A real find

By yysuzanne |

Had reservations someplace else but it was pouring,as we walked back to our hotel we spotted this place. Wow. Will definitely seek it out next time we stay. Wonderful flavores. Shared the milestone and mixed salad, endive arugula. I had the special seafood over linguine, y husband the lasgange. Montipuciano excellent

Warm, cozy, good food

By Ron J |

It was a cold, crazy, rainy night and this was the perfect place to be, warm, comfortable, with great authentic Italian food. The wine was great, the pasta home made, and the sauce was perfect. Close to the theater, easy to get to, and a welcoming staff. Listen to the specials. Full bar Handicapped accessible. Old world style

Da Tommaso

By Y2551VHbarbaral |

This restaurant is convenient for many theatres. Service is fast and efficient. The food was fresh and portion sizes were generous. Prices were fairly reasonable for the Theatre District.

Truly one of the best italian restaurants in NYC.

By Stephanie K |

We had walked by on several occasions and this trip we decided to dine there. We wish we had done so earlier. The restaurant is warm and inviting. The wait staff even more. Very knowledgeable about the menu and the wine. The fettuccini with Portobello mushrooms was wonderful. As well as the asparagus appetizer and the buffalo caprese salad.

Take a Large Party

By F8913ZLthomasl |

I've been to Da Tommaso many times and always have enjoyed it. Recently I hosted a family reunion of sorts prior to attending a concert at Carnegie Hall. 18 of us in all. We were set up in the side room and it was terrific. Service was excellent and attentive to our concert time. All 18 enjoyed our meals. Couldn't have worked out better.

Judy average

By Jaime1221 |

Our hotel recommended. The location is on 8th Avenue close to 55th. Place itself was nice inside but food was mediocre at best. The had a lot of specials that the waiter rattled off in a mumble. Should have specials written down if there are more than two. Portions way too big. No way either of us could get through half of what we were served. Would not recommend.

Excellent Italian Food & Service

By Geneo725 |

We visit Manhattan at least once a year, and this place was a great neighborhood find for us. We dined there this evening (Monday) and very much enjoyed 2 delicious dinners. They were well prepared and nicely portioned. Everything was sooo good, including the bar drinks and dessert. They had a very good selection of entrees and a full bar. Our waiter, Fabrezio, did an excellent job describing the food and made excellent recommendations. We ordered 2 specials: stuffed pork chops and the linguine with clams, shrimp and scallops. Everything tasted great! Cappuccino and the tiramisu was the grand finale! I am very picky when it comes to restaurants, but I could not find one single thing to complain about here. All good!

Tasty Meal in Theatre District

We popped into this restaurant before a show and were pleasantly surprised. We were seated right away and the waiter shared the specials with us. We ordered salads and pasta dishes. Rigatoni with sausage and rapini and spaghetti with clam sauce. Both were tasty and portions were a good size. Service was fast, friendly and efficient.

That's bad. To be avoided

By Tiz |

Bad food. Food prices not corresponding to what is indicated in the menu. Non-existent drinks list that was not provided even upon request. In addition to the taxes we regularly paid, they arrogantly demanded, he and his waiter, a tip of 20% on the total amount (incomprehensible figures written in pencil on a piece of paper) as if it were mandatory insisting badly and kicking us out of the club when we said we would not pay it. We have been here for several days always having dinner and lunch in Italian restaurants that have never claimed this tip of 20% which, in this case, amounted to about $ 45 on an already very large bill of $ 204

Authentic Old Fashion Italia Restaurant

By Albert R |

This is a very special place to eat. The quaintness is like stepping back in time, it’s cosy, comfortable and simple. From the moment you step inside your greeted in a friendly family way. The service is impeccable and of the old school with great attention to detail. The a la carte menu is offered plus the chefs daily recommendations The presentation was excellent and more importantly the taste of the food was superb. Highly recommended

Sisters Day

By Brenda B |

My sisters and I went here after a show. The staff was attentive and friendly. The food veal parm was tender. The ravioli was very good. The atmosphere was quiet and we were able to chat. Definitely will go back

Another great Italian restaurant

By Paul T |

We had been having breakfast across the street from this ristorante for a week, so on the last night we decided to try it out. Great place, food and service they really look after you and the food is excellent. My wife had the seafood linguine as that’s her favourite and it was suggested I had the Porchett chop. Both where full of flavour but we could not manage a sweet and completed the meal with a espresso. We gave a tip as we didn’t see it had been added to the handwritten bill so I would check before paying the bill.

Unusually unprofessional service for a NY restaurant

By Alphonse C |

The poor service clearly did not match the elegant atmosphere of this Italian restaurant. The server was not wiling to produce a wine list if you mentioned you considered ordering by the glass and were not ready to order a bottle, neither did he bother to produce the desert menu. Our hastily scribbled manuscript bill, cleverly included an undeserved 20% tip. We're not ready to return again.

Good, but can be costly

By FauveM |

Small restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Food was good, but the remarks on pricing can be taken into account, they calculate tax and tip themselves and it is a bit unclear what you are paying for. Anyhow, we had a good dinner, and in the end the food is not that much more expensive than other places. Of course you can find places as good for a lower price.

Good Local Restaurant

By jbcdb2018 |

This is a very good local Italian Restaurant. The food is fresh and consistently good. The service is excellent.

Italian

By Lolly’s Look |

We joined friends for dinner here last night. The atmosphere was comfortable with low lighting from chandeliers. The seating was not too close and we were able to relax and enjoy conversation. Our waitstaff was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was a bit hot though on a warm night. I guess the air conditioning has not been turned on yet. The food is just good cuisine and nothing fancy. We each ordered an appetizer to start: the burrata , prosciutto shrimp and mozzarella and tomato. They were all good sized portions. The dinner entrees orders were chicken Parmesan, Lasagna, red snapper Mediterranean and the lobster ravioli.

Pre- or Post-Show Spot

By Lisa C |

My family ate here after a matinee. We could tell there were tables full of those headed to the evening show. Portions were good-sized and we all enjoyed our entrees (veal, pasta dishes), as well as appetizers and desserts. Downsides were the dishes weren't especially well presented and wine selections were just spoken to us (who knows what we really got). Service was friendly. We appreciated not being hurried out, especially for a Saturday night.

GOOD ITALIAN EXPERIENCE

By Mark D |

Wife and I happened in on a Friday night. No reservation but they happily brought us right in. Dining room was dimly lit with candlelight. No frills but warm and inviting. Our waiter Tony greeted us and welcomed us immediately. He was professional, charming and efficient. He had great recommendations for wine, food etc. We had 2 appetizers that were wonderful. A fresh mozzarella salad and also a tasty avocado salad. Bread was so-so. Entrees were very nice. Homemade Fettuccini with mushrooms for my wife and I had the Scaloppini Veal Marsala. Both were excellent. No complaints, reasonable prices, good food and excellent service. We will go back.

Disappointed - Eat Somewhere Else

By Heather |

Dinner for 2 people on Christmas night. Service was awful - so slow (and it was not busy) and NOT friendly. Barely said hello to us upon arrival, never checked on us during the meal, never refilled water. At the end when we asked for our bill the server asked “how was it?”, I said “actually not very good, we were disappointed” - she did not even respond to that - did not apologize or ask why or if we wanted anything else - she literally ignored my statement and brought us the bill. Food was NOT good. Marinara Penne dish was mediocre. Eggplant Parmesan NOT good. Too salty or something - just overall did not taste good. No pasta served with it. Bread was bordering on stale. Dry. We asked to split an entree (as we were going to order appetizers and salads and desserts) but we were told we were not allowed to split even though the menu states you can split for a $2 charge. Clearly they just wanted to charge for an extra entree. I would never ever eat here again and I suggest you go elsewhere.

Stuffed pork chop OMG what?!!!!

By Marielawall3 |

Headed out for a quick bite and was recommended this spot. The warm bread hit the table and was instantly in love! The waiter made some great recommendations and we bought into it. We ordered the stuffed pork chop, when he described it he had me at prochutto. It was delightful, the sauce was creamy but not heavy. The service was nice but with that New York pushy hurry-up feel. This could be a good or bad thing.

the good, the bad, the ugly

By bren m |

We went to this restaurant based on recommendation of our hotel. I ordered a Mediterranean salad that turned out to be 90% chopped different colored peppers. I had two slivers of tomato and maybe a quarter of a cucumber sprinkled with a little feta. Avoid this at all costs. ($14) We complained and were totally ignored. Service was exceptionally poor. They opened the front door when it was 54 degrees outside with me sitting by the door. After I had to put on my jacket, they shut the door. (I'm from Florida, so I was freezing.) The water glasses were seldom full. My husband's veal was OK, and my soup was also OK. The only reason they didn't get a two rating is because of the incredibly good tarramisu. Will not go again.

Delicious!!

By Laura RD |

We wanted a place close to the theater for the matinee performance. The food here was fabulous! Meat lasagna was huge! Chicken Piccata was delish. Tortellini Granatita was chessey and creamy. Special of the day was Halibut and I had it with garlic and wine sauce - unbelievably good. Very disappointed that we were the only customers but glad we were! We will be back!

Nice Italian restaurant

By Diane D |

We had a nice dinner at Da Tommaso. I had Veal Marsala and my daughter had penne al a vodka. The portions were a good size but both dishes had an onion flavor which was a different flavor for those dishes and the reason for the 4 star rating. The Italian bread was good, but would have been better if it was warm. The restaurant was busy but we were able to get seated immediately which was a pleasant surprise. However, the service was slow. It was clean and they had a good variety of dishes to choose from. The prices were very good for NYC. The 2 of us ate for $60, which included a glass of wine. If you are looking for a nice little Italian restaurant, this is the place for you.

Beautiful food - but worth checking the bill!

By ianjon2017 |

Was looking at the menu in the window when a diner emerged, declared himself a local and said this was in his opinion the finest Italian family restaurant in New York. On that recommendation we dined the following night - arrived early (7.00) to find the place half full already. Immediately taken by the ambiance of the place, warm homely. Food was superb and quite reasonably priced at around $20 for most of the dishes. BUT here's the rub - the bill comes handwritten in pencil. We had the Fettucinne and Chicken Romana and one dessert - food clearly listed with total around $50 shown - then additional lines adding another $15 in a couple more amounts. I asked the waiter if these were taxes or tips as I certainly didn't want to undertip on what was a beautiful meal. Taxes I was told so I added what I thought was a generous $15 to the $65 showing only to read later on other reviews that the tip was already added!! So next morning felt a little screwed by that but what the hell it was a beautiful meal!

Disappointed in linguini and clams

By Heidi B |

I was very disappointed with the Linguini with clams. The clams were not in the shell and were extremely tough and rubbery. We were a party of six and the others enjoyed their meals ( salmon, eggplant parmesan and salads).

Very good Italian and excellent service

By Jack W |

Ate most recently (3/16/2017) at Da Tommaso prior to attending Miss Saigon. Three of us had veal picatti and one had veal marsala along with appetizers and wine. The veal picatti is my favorite and each time I have it, I ask to substitute spaghetti noodles for the mashed potatoes which is the way I prefer the dish. A very reasonably priced Chianti was also recommended to us which we enjoyed. Da Tommaso is the type of restaurant which appeals to me, because its quality is always consistent and it serves Italian dishes I look forward to eating! It is small, simple, and very reasonably priced!

Family meal

By daledawes237 |

Do not eat here!! Food was terrible, we had garlic bread which was well over cooked and lumps of garlic on it, all the meals was frozen and microwaved , swimming in water, we had red wine but had oxidised and tasted more like sherry, then on paying the bill it was the most expensive meal we’ve had and we went to some very nice restaurants , the service charge was way over the top and also taxed more than we should have, it was a family meal so didn’t want to kick up a fuss but would definitely not recommend this place, there was honestly nothing worth paying for, Avoid at all costs!!!

Excellent Experience

By TexasCynic |

Good Italian food, friendly service, nice environment, close to Broadway shows. What's not to like? We enjoyed the visit.

Great food

By Colheat |

Called in after a show and a long day. Wonderful and friendly staff who were attentive to our needs. Loved the Grappa!! Definitely a place I would go back to and will recommend to my friends back home in Adelaide.

Dinner 1st night in New York with our family

By cgassnerhofer |

The food was ok, we had dinner with our 4 kids - so 4 x pasta, 1 pasta for my husband and 1 chicken and 1 small salad for me, 2 Coronas and 2 bottles of mineral water at the stunning price of US Dollar 215 including tip - all ok, even though expensive, the only annoying thing was that there were 32 Dollars on the bill without any counterpart - so I assume it was the beverages and the bread? Who knows.... We didn´t want to ask, we where happy to get out, but there is a bitter aftertaste that still lasts unfortunately, it feels like a rip off.

Holy Tortellini, Batman

By Devan K |

A friend took us for dinner, and we were very pleased. The restaurant wasn't busy, and the service was good. The food was delicious, in particular my tortellini. It haunted my thoughts for a few days afterward...so good.

How much?! ££££

By rhian000 |

No drinks menu given - order given straight to the waiter. We wouldn't have ordered drinks had we known the prices first! Very expensive, even for New York! Same goes for coffee & desert. Service wasn't great, very rushed and we felt as if they wanted us in and out. They also got our order wrong due to the rushing. Not the friendliest staff and all in all quite a cold atmosphere. The worst meal I have had in New York so far & I have been here 10 days, eating out every night. Service charge was added & not optional. Definitely wouldn't have chosen to give such a large tip for such poor service. All in all, I left shocked and in disbelief. Definitely would not recommend.

Dinner

By blythe0117 |

Lovely, quaint, old-school Italian restaurant, off the beaten path, no wait on a weeknight. Delicious!

Best thing was the atmosphere.

By interim1 |

The atmosphere was and wait staff were nice, but the food was lacking. The stuffed mushrooms were soggy, but the sauce and flavor was good. Pounded chicken was dry and lacking flavor. My wife got sick a few hours after eating. We believe it to be from the salad which had some rancid lettuce mixed in. She is too polite to complain. I would pass and look for another restaurant.

Eat here for Authentic Italian Food!

By CarolAnn G |

Please know New York had a Black out the Saturday mighty before on the entire West side and all Restaurants had extra fans, etc. in them. Don’t let the exterior fool you. We came for lunch after 4 days of a conference. The service was outstanding!! We were not rushed at all. We started with wine - we needed to relax. The waiter brought us warm rolls and bread - the roll was amazing - yes, I ate the entire roll!! We split the Caesar salad - you can tell the dressing is made in-house. Again - it’s great. Splitting was a perfect size. We ordered the spinach and cheese ravioli special - again made in-house. Such a relaxing lunch. Got a second glass of wine and just enjoyed our afternoon. It is a little pricey - but, less expensive than actually traveling to Italy. Well worth the price!! Great food. Great service. Thank you!

Best Italian we've ever had.

By Dale |

After reading some of the reviews on here i thought I'd put an honest review on from our experience at Da Tommaso, We've been lucky enough to come back 3 times in 3 years and every time me and my wife say how much we've enjoyed it, it's authentic you can't get anymore Italian than this place it's not the cheapest but you get what you pay for excellent quality food. Staff are attentive to you and service is very good, service is added on at the end and not optional but why wouldn't you pay for excellent service? People like to moan about stupid things on TripAdvisor but this is a honest account of our visits here. We can't wait to come back in May for our annual visit.

Neighborhood Italian

By Tracey G |

This seemed like the place families go for an easy special night - birthdays, non-special anniversaries, etc. The staff was outstanding! My daughter was in a show and family gathered for dinner before. There were 12 of us and they put us in a private area at one table. It was wonderful! The food - especially the lasagna and eggplant parmesan - was outstanding! White table cloth dining, but you're ok in casual or dressy clothes. I highly recommend.

Overpriced and mediocre food

By KaneoheBoy |

Came here with a large group for a business dinner. Everyone ordered off the menu and they handled it pretty well, but a lot of orders got mixed up. They offered a pasta trio appetizer and it was rather bland. The salads were OK, but I had eggplant parmigiana for my entree and it was really not exceptional. Tasted like something I could get frozen at the grocery ... if that good. The cost of the meal was very high, which would have been OK if the meal had been exceptional which it was not.

Close to hotel

By AshBranGMA |

First let me say we went here twice , but after second visit we wouldn't waste our time again. First time was lunch and I ordered the carbanara it was tasty but very wet. Husband had the veal parm and it was tasty too but the red sauce is a bit bland , but the cheese helped. It was close to our hotel. Two days later we wanted an early dinner so I called ahead we wanted a table in the window which I mention when calling and ask for the same table we had at lunch its a 4 top in the corner, that way we both can see out. They said they would take care of us. When we show up , there is only 2 other tables and instead of giving us the table we requested we were sat at a very very small 2 top, so husbands back is to the window, and they say some one else had reserved that table, ok no problem We order a capresse and the tomatoes are hard and not even close to being ripe. My husband asked for pasta on side of veal parm instead of potatoes that it came with. Seemed to confuse them a bit. When our plates came they brought a bowl of spaghetti...weird. The service this time is not attentive like when we had lunch, everything was just a bit off. And by the way no one ever showed up for the corner table we had requested. Just for that reason we wouldn't return, but the food is good but not great and the side of spaghetti was $8. And very bland A bit of advice , when someone asks for something specific like a table maybe give it to them. There was also a man who hovered at the door we found him a bit creepy and very rude, it was his call to not give us the corner table. There is way too much really great italian food in NYC don't waste your money or time here.

Good food, friendly staff, good option for theater district

By MBones7 |

It's located at the northern end of the theater district, outside of the biggest crowds. Place has a comfortable, old school feel. Not very large so reservations should be made before/after shows. Place was very busy upon arrival but the staff was not harried and was friendly. Decent size menu and they accommodated some changes. Make sure you ask/are told about the daily specials. Food and wine by the glass were both excellent. Specials were definitely the highlight. Dessert also very good (traditional Italian selections). The hostess and waiters all made us feel very comfortable. We'd definitely return!

Stopped in this place after a Saturday Broadway matinee.

By Gerg95 |

Arrived around 4:45 with my family of 4 and got a window seat. Old school Italian restaurant that seemed to have quite a few locals at the time we were there. Staff was nice and food was good. What more could you want. The place started to fill up as the night went on.

Great Old Fashioned restaurant

By John B |

This is an old school restaurant with friendly service and waiters in white jackets. The food was very good as was the atmosphere.

Atmosfera magica

Very good pasta della mamma! And the cheesecake with pie! Magic atmosphere like my parent' s dining room, excellent price

Hidden Italian Gem!!!!

By Foodie8869 |

This place is off the beaten path. Very cozy and inviting. Not sure about the lower reviews! This place is amazing. We’ve been multiple times and have always had great food and exceptional service. The best Italian food we’ve had in NYC and that’s saying a lot! If you’re near Time Square or Columbus Square stop in!!!!

Very Disappointing

By dam_imgood |

17 years ago while on our honeymoon we eat here at the suggestion of our hotel concierge. The food as I remember was amazing. The service was top notch. We decided to go back while in NYC for a long weekend getaway. What a disappointment. The service was lacking. Many tables had to wait for bills and service as there was only one server working. The food was mediocre at best. I asked for a wine list and was told there wasn’t one. I asked what wine there was and was told a list of various wines, such as Malbec, cab sav. With no details. When I asked details the server responded she didn’t know. It’s a Malbec. My wife ordered pasta dish which was so salty, it was not enjoyable. I had veal parm which came with mashed potatoes and green beans for some reason. The sides were cold, the mashed potatoes were so thick and lumpy. The beans were bland and cold. I only ate the parm and had to leave the rest as it was inedible.

A very good Italian restaurant

By Geoff Spain |

We used this restaurant early evening before a theatre show. It was surprising how busy it was so would recommend a reservation to garantee a place. We were very pleased with the service and food and would highly recommend if you like Italian food in a lively restaurant.

Good value

By Sheryl T |

The restaurant no longer has a pre theatre menu. Even so my friend and I split an appetizer and then two main courses, had a soft drink and coffee and tea and the bill split with tax and tip was $40 a piece. Wonderful service and you knew the food was fresh.

Amazing Food

By lacleveland |

Paul runs a fabulous restaurant. The staff is attentive and the specials are always amazing. I had their salmon and it just melted in my mouth. Unbelievable good. Both friends had spaghetti With meatballs. Biggest meatballs I've ever seen. They loved it. This is my fav Italian Restaurant to take people to that have never been to the city. Service is always great. The food is outstanding. I don't eat sugar but my friends do and they loved the tiramisu. It was the best meal all week. Thank you Paul for keeping this place as great as you do!!!

OK Italian

By TheRealAwaxy |

I was admittedly dubious about eating here, mostly because it is in a heavy tourist area. But my wife was hungry and we needed a break from the drizzle we had spent the morning in, so...in we came. We were seated and the host immediately tried to sell us bottled water. We said tap water would be fine and he brought it to us. I ordered sausage and peppers and the other 3 in our party had various plates of pasta. My dish was a large portion - too much for lunch, for sure, and I think the others found theirs the same. My dish tasted fine, if not spectacular. My wife's pasta with pesto smelled very good. Our friends said that their plates were decent as well. At the end of the meal, there was a tip already added to the bill, although it had not been mentioned on the menu. Also, after we had asked for separate checks for each couple, he tried to talk us out of it saying that our dishes all cost about the same. Not sure why this was important to him. Given the number of Italian places to choose from in NYC, I can't think why I would be compelled to return here.

Dreadful

By journeyman29 |

Carpaccio for starter was ice cold and drowned in pesto, covered in a huge amount of Parmesan , and cold leaves. Couldn’t taste the meat which is supposed to be the star of the dish. Fusilli Laura for main. Presented swimming in water. First time for everything I suppose - but in my experience chefs generally boil off the pasta water or drain it. Disinterested surly service - I think it was because I was a solo diner & tips were going to be small. Incomprehensible hand written bill at the end with service charge already included

Amazing Food, convenient for Broadway Show, Incredible staff!!

By CaptainPhil64 |

Cannot say enough good things about this restaurant and their staff! We made reservations here because it was conveniently located near the theater district and we were seeing a show after dinner. There was some confusion on our part and we did not allow enough time between our reservation time and show time to actually eat. :) The staff at Da Tommaso NYC jumped into action and got our food out to us in "to go" containers so we could make our show on time. And we did! The staff asked us if we wanted to come back after the show so they could reheat our food if we didn't have time to eat during the show. So that is what we did. They made us feel like family when we returned. They reheated our dinners and made a fresh salad for one of our party. The food was AMAZING even after being reheated so I can only imagine how wonderful it would have been fresh from the oven! They treated us so well considering they probably knew they would not see us "out-of-towners" again. If you get an opportunity, I encourage you to eat at Da Tommaso NYC. You will not be disappointed! Thank you, to the staff for making our NYC/Broadway experience one to remember!!

Great place

By Amdtraveler |

Smallish intimate neighborhood Italian restaurant best for adults. Attentive friendly staff. Many specials. Recommend a reservation. Have been going here during our occasional visits to NYC for the past 20 years - was a wonderful find then that continues today

Under rated Italian restaraunt

By John B |

Diner for 4 while visiting New York, very close to theatres, fantastic choice of menu including daily specials ,very authentic Italian restaraunt food and staff where 1st class, best choice of wines that we had all our time in New York, will go back ,a hidden gem

Great Food

By Jason S |

Excellent food and service. Got the lasagna and pasta- very tasty. We will definitely be back when in the area.

Hidden gem

By steveocmd |

I have dined at Da Tommaso several times over the past 15 years and EVERY time it has been superb. Understated, great service, great food. I have taken several people there over the years. We pull up to the unassuming storefront and I get a funny look, and we walk out after the meal and they look at me and say "that was amazing". If you want to look like a NYC insider, take someone to Da Tommaso.

Great service!

By joanne327 |

This is the second time we went to this restaurant! They are friendly, courteous and don't rush you. The maitre d' asked if this was pre- theater and was quite nice. Staff very attentive! Only bad thing is tables are quite close together and this can be a good thing,as u can easily speak to your neighbors!:-) Food is great! Not to overpriced, although my large glass of white wine was $12! All in all a good choice for pre- theater!

Last Minute Dinner

By TLWAD |

Last minute Thanksgiving dinner decision. Walked by with my daughter and said... this is where we want to eat. Great service! Phenomenal food! From the moment we walked in the staff made us and most importantly my 15 year old daughter feel special. Nice quaint atmosphere! I highly recommend! Food was beautifully presented and tested even better! You cannot go wrong with this gym of an Italian restaurant! The cannoli was to die for!

Great find for food after Broadway Show

By katherineweiss |

Found this lovely find right near Times Square. We arrived around 6 pm on a Sunday, and were able to get seated right away without a reservation. The food was great, and fairly well priced for Manhattan. i've found my new spot to take all my visitors when they visit me in the city!

Went again with the boss

By JBT2 |

My 3rd trip. Any place that makes the boss happy makes me happy too. But, da Tomasso also makes me happy. Best Veal Piccata I have had in a long time. Hit the spot!

Charming Italian restaurant

By Peter W |

Had a late lunch here. Pasta sauce was delicious. Waiter was courteous and friendly. Bottled water was expensive but in NYC I dont trust the tap water anymore.

Nice italian meal in NYC

By mammbear |

We found it difficult to get a table elsewhere and got a table at the last minute. Food was nice, not amazing but nice. Waitstaff were pleasant and service was good. Was disappointed that we were told we could not share a meal - we could not finish our meals and being tourists we didn't want leftovers.

Awful, really really awful

By Regina B |

When the bread is bad at an Italian restaurant, you know you are in trouble. Maybe this restaurant was good 40 years ago but not anymore. The decor is so plastic and outdated, it makes Grandmas house look hip. The wine list is so unsophisticated and their wine by the glass is red or white. The Caprese salad was ice cold fridge tomatoes with two skimpy slices of fresh mozzerella. Styrofoam tastes better. The pasta was boxed, the sauces were awful, and the ingredients were out of a can. DO NOT EAT HERE.

Buyer beware

By Janice |

Food is only ok Just pay careful attention to your bill! We split the bill but the waiter NEVER told us that the tip was included for our party of 6 including children This was a casual lunch He brought back our credit card slips but no itemized bill.... we almost double tipped which was clearly his intent!

Awful restaurant!

By afc123 |

Recently visited New York - had a fantastic time barring the experience of this restaurant. Food options were poor - offered pizzas options in window but when asking for this the staff said it hadn't been available for months. Brought out burnt garlic bread (it was black!) This was sent back Lighting in restaurant was poor and to top it off a 20% tip was put on the bill!! Poor experience would never recommend eating here

Good Italian but not great

By Brian K |

Stopped by since it was close to our hotel and was recommended by 2 people from the hotel. Great atmosphere and service throughout the meal. The food was pretty good and you can tell it was homemade but it just lacked something that made it special or stand out. Good flavors but just a bit on the bland side. 2 meals, an app, salad, and 3 drinks for 100. Good overall experience, just a little off from being great.

good food, good location

By jeffrey k |

We were heading to the opera. Needed a decent meal on the way. This restaurant turned out to be a fine choice. Friendly and helpful staff. Caprese for an appetizer/salad. Followed by pasta: bolognese for her, puttanesca for me. generous portions, very nice sauces. Served with Italian bread. We looked at the wine list, but did not imbibe, since we wanted to be fully awake for the Met. However, the list looked good. This place proved a solid find.

Fabulous Italian Food!

By Anthony S |

Went before a show on Saturday night. Great food! The pasta was light and delicious. The service was excellent. This restaurant just went to the top of my list!

Wanted good Italian like Chicago

By mangia007 |

We had a taste for Italian found This around the corner from our hotel. Very good food and service. Pasta with the marinara was delious. Diffently a go back place.

Good Italian food, good Croatian service!

By cootmom |

Our server was very courtly and old-school, as was this restaurant. Catering to tourists due to its adjacent-to-Broadway location, and with fast service accordingly, we were squeezed into a small table for two, a bit crowded but not uncomfortable. We had linguini with clam sauce, lentil soup, and baked clams, all tasty but nothing remarkable, a bit on the too salty side. It's the type of restaurant that in any other city without a central, traditional Italian district (ie, the North End of Boston) would probably rank higher, but it might do well to shake things up a bit.

Lousy

By eric p |

Was hoping for NYC Italian on a trip in from OH. Didn't get it here. Poor Apptz and sauce. They forgot the dessert and we had to wait for the bill forever. Skip this & go to some other Italian restaurant in the city.

Pre-Broadway Dinner

By Cathy Oh |

We dined here before heading to a broadway show at 8pm. Cozy, old-style Italian - while the food was very good, they pulled low-life tricks of serving all 4 of us appetizers when we asked 2x and made clear we were sharing 2 - they then substituted the wine we ordered (McManus Cabernet) with a different wine, pouring the taste without mentioning the switch and quickly pouring the other 3 glasses - McManus is not a great wine but the substitute was terrible - it’s just insulting to be treated like that - you’re out for a nice time and have to deal with nonsense like that -shame they’ll lose customers over such pathetic tactics - wouldn’t recommend

Old Style Italian - Very Good Food, but service is a bit difficult

By DANCEshow |

Love the food here. No nouvelle Italian...it's the real homestyle deal. Every dish I've had has been flavorful and satisfying. But the service is a bit brusque and rude. The waiters really do have to learn a bit more hospitality and grace. But do go for the meals.

Waited over an hour for the food

By smilinggrace |

We suspect the night we were there the cook must have quit. Not one table was getting food service. It took almost 45 minutes to get one salad and over an hour to get our food. We kept ourselves entertained by imagining the owner rolling up his sleeves to cook all the meals. When the food finally showed up it was very tasty especially the veal piccata. My meal was alittle on the cool temperature side. If price for a glass of wine at 12.00 US a glass is too pricier for you, then do not order it. It is a generous pour however. Stick to the tap water if you do not want to pay a hefty price for water. I do not know what happened that night. If it was an anomaly, then the food is worth going for!

Good but not special

By Jerry P |

This is an average NYC Italian restaurant. The food, service and atmosphere are all acceptable, but nothing to write home about. We stuck with the pasta, and have no complaints.

Perfect for Pre or Post Theater

By TwinMomCT |

We went here after seeing a Broadway matinee for an early dinner (5:30). Location is perfect for pre or post theater meal . We had a party of 7, so they put us in the back room (main dining room was full), and it was perfect for our group. Food was delicious and plentiful. At first, the waiter was a little bit cranky, but I think this was because there was a lot going on in our group, including a little whining from a couple hungry kids - once we settled down, ordered the food and several bottles of wine, he cheered up and was pleasant. Cost is a little bit pricey, but that is to be expected in this neighborhood and I'm not sure you will do much better in other nearby restaurants unless you go a but more casual. Wine is definitely overpriced. Downside - the dining room was WAY too dark. Otherwise, the experience was great.

Late night lack of everything, no atmosphere, poor food, expensive

By David Smith |

We were advised by someone at the Theatre showing Jersey Boys (before the show) to pop along and book for an after the show meal. We did, and the place was packed, always a good indication of a restaurant. However, whether the place was busy because of some pre-show deal, or whether we were just unlucky, but our experience was really poor and disappointing. The place was empty bar one couple at 10.45pm, and we had a choice of seating! We were provided with still water - which we didn't realise was going to cost us - and we ordered Bolognese and the daily special. To be honest it was 'ok' - nether was the worst we have had but it sure wasn't the best. The atmosphere was completely 'dead' - just nothing. We didn't want a desert so asked for the bill - the high service charge was already added otherwise I'm afraid to say I wouldn't have given any tip at all. Really quite disappointing for what had been a special evening at the theatre.

A real find in the theater district

By Mjsomaha |

This is the real deal. A reasonably priced Italian restaurant in the heart of the New York theater. District service is prompt, but not cloying. All of the specialties are genuine, and made in house. Cannot wait to return again. The veal paramagiana was magnificent.

Great food but middling service.

By FloridaFamilyofFive |

I had dinner here recently and I found the staff a bit too informal and familiar. The food was very good and the prices I agree were "fair" for Manhattan. The restaurant is small and intimate and the tables are tight. I felt a bit self-conscious on my own.

Pre-Broadway show venue worth a visit

By Tophinnie |

Dropped into Da Tommaso around 5:00 p.m. just to have a glass of wine before going to see "Cats" at the Neil Simon Theatre. Quiet, like your Italian grandma's dining room. No pressure about how long we too. Decided to order dinner, then a cappucino, and a Limoncello. Service was very good (even let me charge my iPhone battery which was dying) and started to fill up around 6:30 pm. (our show was at 8:00 p.m.). Great place for a pre-theater dinner. I had the homemade ravioli and my friend had another pasta dish she raved about. Ample servings.

Satisfying

Enjoyed their pollo giardiniera (chicken milanese with special house salad which had greens, tomato, olives, onions and mozzarella) - satisfying! Chocolate mousse dessert was a chocolate mousse cake

Great Italian Food at a Great Price in a Great City!

By combinedtravelers |

My family and I have been coming to Da Tommaso since the first run of "Miss Saigon" on Broadway, and our most recent visit, after seeing the revival of the same show, has affirmed that the restaurant is still going strong after all of these years. This is quite an accomplishment in a city where restaurants open and close on a daily basis. Throughout our visits over the years, we have always found the food to be always delicious and served to the highest standard. We recently enjoyed the Ossobucco special which was tender, flavorful and plentiful. The side of fresh string beans and potatoes were the perfect compliment to the meal. The homemade ravioli were light and delicious and served with the most delicious gravy. The gravy, or as some may refer to it--sauce, was made from the freshest tomatoes and wasn't drowning the wonderful homemade ravioli (which were stuffed with cheese and spinach). The bread was warm and crusty on the outside, while soft on the inside. Our cocktails were plentiful and well-made--well worth the reasonable price. Da Tommaso is the perfect before or after theatre stop, as they know how to get theater-goers in and out without having it seemed rushed or frantic. The host/owner is a true gentleman and is genuinely excited to welcome you to his humble dining room--just as if you were visiting his home. There you'll find racks filled with wine bottles, a mirrored back wall that creates the illusion that the dining room is larger than it is, and Capidomente-like fixtures adorning the walls and hanging from the ceilings. Tables covered in white linens welcome you and are the perfect palette for the wonderful creations from the kitchen that you will savor and long remember. Granted the surroundings are nothing fancy--but hey neither was Nonna's kitchen...but oh the food.

Not for Italians or Foodies

Haven’t reviewed in a while, but I’ll stay true to form for those who know how I review....honestly! Needed a close by place to eat since temp was 100+ outside. Upon walking in, it smelled off, almost like restroom. I was concerned and almost walked out...but I sucked it up. The a/c was a portable unit with two flex tubes pointing to the dining room. There were 6 room fans perched above us. Strike 2 but I stayed. Bread was stale! Spedini alla Romano was the first taste of the ingredients they use in the kitchen. For those who are not familiar with this dish, it is made with Italian bread, fresh mozzarella and grilled like mozzarella in carrozza, or more simply put, grilled cheese. The difference is the topping. It’s topped with an anchovy sauce. I’ve not only ordered this dish many times but have prepared it myself with great results. Their version was white bread, cheese that resembled glue and too much “brown” sauce with smashed capers and lumps. Not appealing to the eye and less appealing to the taste buds. But as I say to my readers, if you don’t know what it’s supposed to taste like, you’re none the wiser. The deal breaker came with the main course! I didn’t have high hopes of a great meal by this point, so I played it safe with Lingujne and clam sauce.....how can you screw that up? Pasta cooked al dente was a good start. Murky white sauce as you can tell from picture and sandy clams. Fork down! My daughter and sister got the meat lasagna special, despite my recommendation to play it safer. Oh boy! The meat was pulverized into a paste, like dog food, and grey! The cheese was the same glue like substance from the appetizer. My daughter decided since she was hungry to scrape everything off of the pasta layers and just eat the pasta. I decided to ask for the check!! There’s always an upside....the wait staff was attentive and courteous, water was poured efficiently and if you needed something they were there. As we left one waiter shook his head and said, “lasagna no good, flat!” I was glad the staff agreed. One lasagna was taken off the bill in good faith, we thanked him, left an appropriate tip and considered it a lesson learned!

Lunch

We had a very good lunch, but the service wasn’t good. The waiters acted like they didn’t care about us. Be aware that they automatically include 20% tips on the check.

One and do e

By Kelly L |

My husband and I visited this quaint restaurant on recommendations from friends. The hostess was lovely but it ended at that point. We went to dinner to celebrate my husband’s birthday and our waiter ignored us. Two tables that arrived and ordered after us were served and finished before we received our meal. The waiter did not never said hello only asked me what I wanted to drink. He did not bother to share specials, check in to see how our meals were. The food was only average. We were quite disappointed after looking forward to s special dinner.

Good food, quiet atmosphere, great location

By ElkeArt |

I have e been here 3 times this month!! I can’t understand why it’s not packed. My friends and I have loved everything we’ve eaten and I think it’s reasonable for a decent meal. The spiedino is yummy and easily shared. We loved the carpaccio too. The salad was a little small to share but so tasty. I love the puttenesca( I get it over capellini) and the vongole was decent enough. The pork chop special was spectacular! We also like the tiramisu. I think it’s a great location before a show ( we ate here before Radio City, Carnage Hall and the Al Hirshfeld theatre). Very convenient. I’ve paid more for worse food other places. We licked our plates clean.

Great find!!!

By lizalevine8 |

My husband and I were supposed to eat at a different restaurant nearby, but to our horror it had a ‘B’ rating so I said keep walking ! We walked into this lovely old school Italian gem. Homemade ravioli was terrific. Cesar salad perfectly dressed. I will come back!

Service did not match price

By Average Joe |

Service did not match price for food. 2 hours for food to arrive. Service over all was extremely slow and unresponsive.

excellent Italian restaurant

By CCfromAlabama |

We must eat here every time we come to NYC. Our family of five enjoyed all the dishes we tried. Lots of choices! Excellent service! We made a reservation but we didn't need it. We had great Italian food in Little Italy also, but this is a great restaurant near Times Square/Broadway.

Overpriced w a sneaky service

By Adsmile123 |

Overpriced w a sneaky service charge of 20percent for lunch w 6 people.... no wonder service is poor... they get 20percent automatically

Delicious Italian

By dtobias |

The staff is very friendly and welcoming. We came in without a reservation and they showed us to an overflow room where they normally hosted parties. The food was delicious especially the Lasagna and veal marsala and the atmosphere was quite nice.

Best cannoli in NYC

By 559edwardk |

Love this restaurant! Warm friendly service, excellent food! The Rigatoni Bolognese was delicious! The fennel salad was so fresh and tasty! For dessert we chose the Cannoli which was over stuffed with ricotta cream and was served with whipped cream and a light raspberry sauce. Will definitely go back again!

Good experience

By Jeri G |

Restaurant was quiet so service could have been better. Bread needs to be fresher. All in all food was good both the specials and regular menu items. Would consider returning but not committing

Italian Gem

By amcworthy |

Our hotel recommended this gem and it was perfect! The food is authentic Italian and so delicious you eat more than you intended. If you’re looking for a hearty, delicious Italian meal in the city without all the fuss and at reasonable rates, this is the place! The ricotta cheesecake inspired me to make it myself when we returned home. It was that good!

Very nice Italian restaurant, casual and great food!

By Marlene M |

I had just arrived in New York and my sister had told me if you go, try and make it to this Italian restaurant that her and her boyfriend found by accident last time when they were in New York so it was on my radar. It was so funny, I was walking to my hotel from the subway and was so tired and hungry and went to the first half decent restaurant I could find a couple of blocks from the hotel, sat down, ordered a glass of house red and picked up the menu, it was it - Da Tommaso at 903 8th Ave! The food was just perfect, white table cloths, old school italian, fantastic house salad and past, with tax and tip it came to $47, so a bit pricey for lunch, but really really enjoyed it. Great start to my trip to New York.

Cozy room, tasty food -

By Debbie P |

Our friend chose the restaurant for our pre-show meal, and a good choice it was. A small dining area, not crowded (at 6:00), with an inviting vibe. Our waiter, through a thick Italian accent, told us about the specials while we enjoyed cocktails. I had a bowl of fresh vegetable soup that was very light and just right! My entree was their ravioli special stuffed with ricotta and spinach covered in tomato sauce - it was delicious! My husband and I shared tiramisu for dessert. It was good, but a little different, served in a bowl. If Da Tommaso were in my neighborhood at home, I'd be a frequent guest.

Food is excellent, serice not really

By jeannine130 |

I made reservations well in advance and went with a group of fourteen the Saturday before Christmas. I came in from Long Island with my family and my sister came down from Albany with hers. We were looking forward to it as we used to come here all the time and hadn't been there for a while. Table was ready when we got there.AS soon as we sat down, our waiter informed us he had another group coming in right after us. Serving fourteen is not easy, but, we had drinks, appetizers, salad and main dish served to us within 65 minutes. Before we finished one thing, the next course was out! The waiter was UPSET that we wanted coffee and dessert! Felt very un comfortable and even though the food is delicious, will have to think hard before going back.

Absolutely Worth the Visit

By Cosmo T |

Phenomenal prices for New York City and food in the true Italian tradition—classic Italian dishes made with the freshest ingredients. Nothing fancy here—just delicious, homemade sauce (or gravy- you call it), the choicest cuts of beef, fresh fish, and al dente pasta. Our favorite dishes for our visit were the Antipasto Casa Nostra, the Insalata Tri Colore, Shrimp Marinara, and Pollo Romano. Don’t miss the berry tart for dessert as it’s a house fave for over 25 years. Service was efficient without being overbearing and the cocktails were hearty and well-priced. The only thing lacking is the dated lackluster atmosphere complete with Capodimonte knock offs.

Da Tommaso is Five Stars all the way!

By Journey51369010811 |

Da Tommaso is Five Stars all the way! A Five-Star atmosphere with beautiful Italian art on the wall, white tablecloths, and gorgeous windows opening to the wonder that is Manhattan! Five-star staff who shared the specials, answered questions about the menu, and took care of our every need by keeping our glasses filled and even quickly replacing my napkin when it dropped to the floor. And most of all--Five-Star food! It makes my mouth water just by remembering the tastes! Delicious portobello mushrooms and salads as appetizers. Branzino sea bass with capers and red sauce. Melt-in-your-mouth lobster ravioli. And delightful pork chops! This is the best Italian food in Manhattan!

Authentic Italian Fare at an Unbelievably Fair Price for Manhattan

By combinedcollections |

Don't be put off by the "strip-mall storefront" or the knock off Capidomonte lighting fixtures adorning the dining room because this is by far some of the most delicious and authentic Italian food in all of Manhattan. (I dare you to find a more reasonably-priced Italian restaurant of this caliber.) Don't miss the "three-color" salad, or the fresh calamari. The pasta is light and wonderful. Their sauce (or gravy) is made with the freshest ingredients, and accents the dishes on which it is served--it's never overbearing. Pay close attention to the peppers and sausage entree, as it is flavorful, fresh, and of the highest quality--as are all of their appetizers and entrees. We have been frequenting DaTommaso regularly since 1991, and have NEVER been disappointed. Their bar offers generously poured cocktails, and a wide variety of wine by the glass (as well as the bottle). To top it all off, their coffee, espresso, and cappuccino are fresh and strong--the perfect end to an Italian meal. DaTommaso is close enough to Broadway for before or after theater visits. The waiters do a fantastic job to ensure your enjoyment, and are certain that you don't miss a minute of your show.
