Best truffles ever

By PeripatetiPat |

This being truffle season, I took the server's suggestion and had the spaghetti dressed simply with a lightly garlic infused warm olive oil. Then at the table the spaghetti was COVERED with white truffle shavings. The warmth of the oil caused the truffles to melt into the pasta infusing it with that famous earthy smell and taste - it was glorious! My companion's fish was a bit dry and the boning was not terrific. The wine list has many nice Italians. The service is excellent - not too much hovering. Low lights contribute to a quiet ambience, though there were several families and large groups. Another plus is it is not excessively noisy. All in all a very nice evening.

ooooooh myyyyyy gosh!!!!!

we were visiting NYC and were invited by frequent visitors to this restaurant. as stated by someone else, the front entry is pretty unassuming for the kind of service and food you are about to have....let me repeat myself: ooooooh myyyyyy gosh! our dinner was so wonderful and the service was extremely attentive. we had an early dinner reservation, and by the time we wrapped up, the place was packed. we highly recommend! Looks Can be Deceiving

By Holly K |

Da Umberto doesn’t look like much from the outside. As we know, looks can be deceiving. The interior is beautiful and serene. The waitstaff is first-class (and handsome) and the food is perfectly-prepared and perfectly-presented. I started with the grilled mushrooms served with polenta points. The dish contains several kinds of mushrooms and the grilling adds so much flavor. It’s a light but flavorful appetizer. For my main course, I had the special of short ribs in Chianti sauce over polenta. The short ribs melted in my mouth. The sauce was deep and rich and the polenta, this time, soft, was a perfect accompaniment to the richness of the dish. Da Umberto is one of my absolute favorites.

The truffle pasta dish...

By StanleyT22761 |

is the best in the world...what they can do with mushrooms. The seafood, the martinis, the pasta - none better in New York. Pricy and the locations a little in between and in betwixt but this is a destination - go!

After theater

We have eaten here when visiting NYC many times. It is a beautiful QUIET spacious and welcoming restaurant. The food is superb and you will be well guided by the professional staff. Italian food at its best. Elegant

The real deal

By bergfischer |

Innovative cuisine with clear Italian roots, Nicely served by the waiter, but the busboy forgot the bread and water refill. Very nice restaurant but don't sit next to "millenials". Their noise may ruin your nice meal.

Among the Best Italian in NYC

By Antionio10 |

One of the best Italian restaurants in Manhattan. Been here many times over the last 35+ years. So glad the specials are not all pricy, though they very much lean in that direction. Service is friendly and staff is welcoming. This restaurant is a sure hit with friends.

One of the best Italian restaurants in Chelsea

By Chinapjs |

Great restaurants sometimes deliver on the food but can be a daunting place to visit. They tend to "know" what you should eat and often hustle you in and out way too quickly. Da Umberto which has been around for two generations is just the opposite, it tries to make you comfortable, happy and in love with their food. This is Northern Italian at its best. The antipasto table literally groans. The menu book has lots of choices but surprisingly they also had lots of specials from the chef. Best of all, as everything sounded interesting and we couldn't decide easliy they let us do what we wanted instead: we composed our own meal. So we took two of the pasta specials (a penne with veal ragu and homemade raviolis) and a special risotto plus two special vegetable dishes and asked that they put a smaller portion on each plate. .Obviously we started with a plate of antipatso. For dessert we chose three and again, each person got some on their plate all with extra decorations and bits of fruit... and the like. Great wine list with some very nice and reasonably priced Italian wines. Might be our Chelsea favorite

Serious Italian

By ChadS303 |

Enjoyed a tremendous business dinner with a group of 10 at this spot. Yes, it is not moderately priced and definitely at the higher end but well worth it. We had a waiter making the experience more authentic and the atmosphere was also very enjoyable. Pastas and antipasta were very solid and they were very willing to go off menu. Everybody in the group enjoyed the service and food selections with great suggestions from the waitstaff. Highly recommended if you're looking for top shelf, authentic Italian (bearing a premium price) and a very nice upscale atmosphere.

So-so - not a good as it was years ago

By David M |

This was a place I knew well 15 years ago but it fell short of my memories. First, wine at 4x retail and warm sparkling water from a machine behind the bar seems excessive. Food is of reasonable, but only that, for the price with nothing of contemporary North Italian flair. It lacks style in most ways although the staff try hard, they also lend a suburban feel.

Mixed Review

By Ctmom90 |

The good: Lovely space, attentive waiters. Appetizers were a mix of various roasted veggies, shrimp, pastas. They were all wonderful. Our daughter ordered the filet mignon which was truly delicious-perfectly cooked, extremely tasty. The "just ok": Ordered the veal scallopini and was totally underwhelmed. Some strange brown sauce covered the veal, rather salty and other than that, tasteless. The appetizers were so plentiful that I didn't have much room for main course which was a good thing. Another disappointing aspect of the restaurant was the noise level. We sat towards the kitchen area (which is behind glass) but with every table occupied, it was hard to hear the people on the other side of our table. If we were to return, I would stick with appetizers, salads and pasta. No need for anything else.

Still the best Italian in NYC

By Ahg2 |

Have eaten here for many years and while we no lance live in NYC, still visit whenever we are back. Service remains outstanding. The Pastas are fantastic and the pounded veal is still my favorite. Deep wine list, great atmosphere. Will be back.

Good not great

By rdevito |

I don't like wait staff who pretend to speak Italian but don't actually. The food was good but expensive for the quality of the meal we had. The artichoke appetizer was done 3 ways, only 1 tasted good. The veal chop alla Milanese (butterflyed, breaded and fried) was over done.

Absolutely Delicious

By Katboy14 |

We went here after seeing a Broadway show. Authentic Italian cuisine was phenomenal. We started w rustico, moved into cavatelli and home made mushroom ravioli then chicken Milanese and filet minon. Everything was cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. Great atmosphere.

the wrong choice

By welsh73 |

Chelsea and West Village are brimming with well established Italians. We couldn't decide between them. We chose Da Umberta on the strength of commentaries describing it as well established, and classic etc. It was the wrong choice. On a Monday evening, when lots of local eateries were full, Da Umberta was not. Within 5 minutes of arrival, we were set to leave. The sullen and downright unpleasant waiter described the daily specials at a rate of knots that made it clear he wanted to get home asap. When he was asked to repeat the exercise, he rolled his eyes. When we then had the temerity to ask him to cost his proposals, he walked away. We were about to, as well. The diplomatic maitre d tried to save the situation ,and was a model of diplomacy. We stayed. The food was fine. The problem is not with the chef. But the evening was soured. And it then got corked with a half bottle of chianti that had gone wrong. But it was too much hassle to keep on arguing. So we drank up, ate up, and left....; never to return, and regretting that we hadn't gone elsewhere- as should you.

Dinner was delicious; dessert even better

By jbrown68 |

We called for a reservation for within the hour and were accommodated, which we were lucky because the restaurant was quite full. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly by the host. He told us we could wait for a table in the back or have a table right in the front, for which he apologized. He was very gracious especially considering we had only made our reservation about a 1/2 hour before. We took the front table, which was really fine. I had the fried artichokes, which were nice and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. My main dish was a special--shrimp in a spicy sauce. I thought my meal was delicious, as was the veal my friend ordered and the risotto my husband ordered. For dessert the tiramisu was fabulous and the panna cotta was amazing. Yum! The service was excellent. Attentive without hounding. A very pleasant evening all around.

Lovely Italian Restaurant

By larryderm |

A good menu, attentive service, and well prepared food all add up to be pluses at this Sicilian eatery. The tables are nicely spaced, and the menu is varied enough for varying tastes. A nice touch to the dining room design is a pocket garden, protected by floor to ceiling glass.

Exceptional.

Da Umberto gets it all right. Elegant, quiet, excellent food, wonderful service. Loved the overall experience at Da Umberto!

HUGE Mistake

By Holly K |

Can it really have been a full year since I've set foot in Da Umberto? I will seriously need to correct that; HUGE mistake. I breathe a sigh of relief walking in here. The place is serene. The food is fabulous. The waitstaff is wonderful and handsome. The tables are spaced far enough apart that one can not only hear one's lunch companion, but also one need not worry that one is being overheard. This is my go to place for lunch with colleagues and friends when I go out for lunch at the office (obviously not often). I had the fungi with polenta to start. It was utterly delicious and not terribly filling, but very appetizing. It primed me for my risotto with veal ragu, which was so good but more than I could handle. And so tomorrow, I will enjoy the other half of a wonderful lunch and wonder why I don't get to Da Umberto more often.

Good meal. Attentive service

By AmyC723 |

We all shared appetizers. I had the mushrooms that were on the menu. Outstanding. For entree I had branzino which was tasty. There were a very very long list of specials. Too long to focus on. Noisy ambience - more like a pleasant buzz- not so loud that you couldn't converse. Restaurant appears small. Other reviewers have said its a romantic setting. I disagree. A very solid meal for an evening out with friends

Really good italian place in Chelsea

By L A D |

Food & service were terrific. Great menu and specials. Had the Veal Saltimbocca and it was the best I have ever had. Great selection of desserts as well.

Fabulous Dinner

By CathyKJ |

The service and ambience were perfect and the food was beyond words. We started with the crispy artichoke with aioli sauce and the fig, prosciutto and Gorgonzola appetizers.....and we are still talking about them. We then shared the special pasta which was also so very good. Three entrees..veal scaloppine, chicken Milanese and chicken sorrentino ....all excellent. I would definitely go back to this restaurant when in NYC again. Also the waiter wine recommendation was perfect.

Next Italian in NYC

By Donna M |

What a wonderful restaurant. Thanks to Eric for making our evening very special. Husband had veal meatballs in a wonderful gravy, we shared the asparagus which was perfectly done and I had the watermelon and beet salad. Mains were the tuna special for my husband and I had the eggplant. Perfect. We will definitely be back.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

By Michael C |

This is a fun bustling restaurant. Their pasta is amazing and they go out of their way to make sure you are happy. I ordered off menu the chicken parmigiana which was one of the best I have ever had. Service is excellent and I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are visiting New York.

Fantastico!!!

By ChasInLucca |

I consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to Italian restaurants. I studied in Italy and had a home in Tuscany for 12 years. I am not a bad cook of Italian dishes. But the chef at Da Umberto created some taste sensations I will not soon forget! Quite expensive but worth it! And quite romantic as well!

Great Italian food

By Angela J |

Went with a group of around 12. Great service and food. The Italian food was authentic. Atmosphere was pleasant. Expensive but what I expected for the service and food- well worth it.

Great Food, great service and lovely atmosphere

By Barb G |

We met friends who were visiting NY from France. The food was terrific and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating and did not rush us which really made this special luncheon special.

Delicious and many people know it!

Got there early which was good for talking since it is very popular. Food was delicious but of course pricey but that's New York

ALMOST A FIVE... IF IT WEREN'T FOR:

By walter m |

I must say that I went out of my way to come back to Da Umber tjust thinking about last nights dinner o as I had been there once before and do not live in the City. The food is well....extraordinarily good. In preparation, presentation and taste. My mouth waters just thinking about last nights dinner of Burratta with tomatoes, a melange of seafood in a lite tomato broth, roasted brussel sprouts, angel hair pasta with garlic and oil, a taste of my friend's most extraordinary beef short ribs, mushroom ravioli, and more........ All absolutely delicious and served by a cadre of staff whose attention and knowledge of selections is unsurpassed. I only wish that next time.. and there will be a next time... the staff does not hover over the table and ask to take away dishes before all in our party was finished. That got an admonishment from me and an an apology from the wait staff. Da Umberto is a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours just enjoying friends and food. It is an expensive place to dine and although there may be other restaurants of this caliber around, this one takes and makes the cake!!(ricotta cheesecake that is). The staff always welcomes you "back home" and I feel that when I return.

After Halloween Parade dinner with our group. The buffet was excellent!

By Justin W |

I had been invited to an after party dinner following the completion of the Halloween Parade and we had a wonderful dinner Da Umberto’s. The food and the service were wonderful. We had a menu of Fresh Bread, Penne with a Marinara Sauce, Shrimp in a Scampi Sauce with mini tomatoes. Butternut Squash Ravioli, Risotto with Veal, broccoli and Brussels spouts and Chicken Parmesan. Everything they served us was delicious and it always came from the kitchen fresh. Everything was so well seasoned and so nicely presented. I really enjoyed the meal as I had last year. The restaurant did a wonderful job for our dinner and hats off to the manager and staff for making us feel so welcome after a long night at the parade.

The food and the service were wonderful

By Justin W |

A group of us came for an after party for an event and the food and the service of Da Umberto were wonderful. This is the second time I have been here and the food is very consistent. The restaurant is really beautiful and very cozy and it was nice to sit down after a long night. We had a delicious dinner of chicken parmesan, penne vodka, shrimp, roasted potatoes and vegetables. The bread was also wonderful. The service was very good and the waiters are always so nice and friendly especially for a big group. I especially liked the shrimp with cherry tomatoes and the penne vodka. The only issue I had was a glass of wine was $27, which I thought was very steep. I know its Manhattan and prices have gone up but that is a bottle of wine in a store. The woman working the bar understood and was nice enough to be generous with the pour so it made up for it. Still the food and the service were wonderful and the food delicious and I can't wait to try the restaurant on my own. It really is an elegant and very welcoming restaurant.

Crowded, Noisy and quite good

By Robert K |

Out visit to Da Umberto was a very enjoyable one. The food was very well prepared except for my pasta with truffles and wild mushrooms which did not have the distinctive truffle flavor. When I complained that the truffle flavor was not there the manager told me that it was sprinkled around the dish and offered to exchange it for something else. I declined as the wild mushrooms were delicious and I did not want to waste them. After a short discussion with our waiter the manager came back and told me he would reduce the price of the dish by the ten dollars they added for the truffles, something he should have done immediately. Everything else including my boned and sauteed cornish hen was perfect butt his little problem spoiled what should have been a perfect meal.

Went for a group get together after the Halloween Parade

By Justin W |

I was Da Umberto for a private party after assisting in the Halloween Parade and the food and serve at Da Umberto was wonderful! We had pastas with a creamy pesto, another with a vodka type sauce and a risotto meat sauce. We had a salad that was really fresh with a light dressing and for dessert a Tiramisu, which ordinarily I don't like but it was really good here. It was very light and not too heavy on the coffee. I was impressed by the quality of the dishes which were served buffet style and were perfectly cooked and everything was served buffet style and cooked in small batches so that it was fresh. Everything was perfectly spiced and the sauces extremely flavorful. The restaurant was really busy after the parade and the service was excellent. There was plenty of staff in the restaurant and they could not have been nicer. The prices were a little high but then quality costs money and the people that sponsored the party could not have been nicer. I was really impressed by the restaurant.

Spur of the Moment Delicious Dinner

By bergerde |

Last minute, we went into this restaurant, which we had visited before, for dinner on a Friday night. The restaurant didn't disappoint after they were so welcoming to find us a table. My husband had a veal chop and I had the tuna—delicious! The service was great and the waiter very informative. Since my son and his wife and baby live near by, we will continue to visit this wonderful restaurant next time we are in NYC.

Excellent Italian Food , Great fish and wonderful caring service

By Arthur G |

About two weeks ago we had a fantastic dinner at Da Umberto's located on West 17th Street. We were there to celebrate our cousin's 60th birthday and the restaurant was able to handle a very large group. I was impressed with the attention of the waiters and the outstanding quality of all the courses. This is a great place to come for a special occasion or just a a wonderful meal. I had grilled swordfish that was served with a balsamic dressing that was perfectly prepared. As I nibbled other guests dishes, I couldn't decide which was the best food on the table! I highly recommend Da Umberto's!

Visit a place after an extended absence

By dylanboyd2007 |

We decided tonight to go back to Da Umberto, it’s been awhile so we decided to become NYC tourists again. What do I mean by that we knew we’d overpay by 30% on the bill but it’s NYC and the restaurant does have history as “a place to go.” We started with an octopus appetizer, a “seafood risdotto with shrimp,” which was bland and and not cooked long enough. In addition an arugula salad and the special house pasta. No great memories here. Entrees where the chicken milannese done very nicely, tuna served at proper temperature and 2 veal milannese dishes both a bit dried out and overpriced. Service was mediocre at best, servers tried clearing dishes while others were still eating. If you want to spend 4-5 star $ do your homework, there are to many great restaurants in NYC for less.

One of my favorite restaurants in NYC

By Celie B |

Wonderful food, intimate and lovely atmosphere, local and regular NYC crowd as well as quite a few movie greats who live locally frequent there (but don't bother them) it's still nice to see Pacino or Broderick there as well as others. The food is expensive but worth every penny. Delicious that's all you need to know!

Gracious hospitality at Italian restuarant

By looshi |

The staff is is very warm and welcoming at Da Umberto. Everyone is happy and friendly and they just want to serve you. The food was authentic and delicious. There was a great variety of specials in appeitzers and entrees. Dessert was weak.

Still very good

By Virginia Y |

We have been to da Umberto off and on for 20 years whenever we are in New York. It’s easy to get a table unlike other contemporary Italian restaurants. We were here with a group of 8 and needed attentive service. We got it. While the pastas were not as delicious as I hoped the main courses were very good. The steak Florentine for 2 is highly recommended. Desserts are a bit old fashion. But overall it’s good value.

Among the Best Italian Restaurants I Have Found in the U.S.

By Rob_TA_Janssen |

Both times that we have been here over the years, Da Umberto pleased us with real Italian food and good service. With its stable quality it is among the best Italian restaurants that I have found in the U.S.

Great Food. Don't get quizzed on specials

By GMBG |

We had a wonderful meal at Da Umberto. Attentive and gracious service and the food was delicious. I do have one complaint however: the waiter rattled off a list of over 16 specials. There was no way that one could remember them all and after awhile, one had to stop listening. It would be better if we had been handed a printed list of specials so that we could look at them and think about what we wanted, rather than trying to remember what was offered that was NOT in the printed menu. It would make for a more pleasant decision making process.

What’s Not to Like?

By Holly K |

I’ve never had anything but a wonderful meal here. The food is amazing. The service is fabulous. The atmosphere is authentic Italian. The waitstaff is charming and handsome. What’s not to like?

A Wow of an NYC Italian Spot

By kathleen o |

We travel to New York a couple of times a year, but this was our first visit to da Umberto. Took some friends and celebrated a birthday. We all raved about the food, the wine, the service. We ordered a variety - pasta, fish, veal milanese (one of my favorites, in general and I thought their's was the best I've ever had. And it wasn't $58.), and enjoyed everything. The service was also excellent. It's a lovely space, low key elegance. It was a bit loud for my taste, but most restaurants are now a days. It isn't inexpensive but we didn't feel overcharged for anything. And we got a wonderful bottle of wine for about $50-60. Basically, we loved it and It will now be one of our regular spots when in town.

Competent classic with serious sticker shock issues

By swisstravelguru |

This is a nice enough place with competently-prepared and served Italian classics. The restaurant doesn't seem to have any signature or unique dishes and I didn't notice whether the pasta is home-made or not. Apart from the accents of some of the servers, I would call say it's more "New York Italian" than authentically-Italian-like-like-in-Italy, a country I visit several times a year. Where I have a real problem with this place is the overpriced specials (the server rattled off a long list but didn't mention the prices, which I naively and incorrectly assumed were in line with those of the dishes on the menu). Even in overpriced Manhattan, $58.00 for veal parmesan (fontina, actually) seems like pushing the envelope. And what about that $25.00 glass of too-cold house barolo (at least that's what I ordered, the wine wasn't poured from a bottle at the table so I have to take it in good faith)? Our table was never offered a wine list, nor did the server suggest that a bottle might be a good idea for a group of 6. I don't plan to return, and would only recommend this place to expense-account diners and even then there are better places for the money.

Because you're worth it.

By Carl L |

On arrival the staff promptly greeted myself and my partner as if we were the most important people to ever enter the building. Brad and Angelina could not have been welcomed with more vigour and enthusiasm. The decor, atmosphere and beautifully presented staff were exactly what I had hoped for as I pulled on a crisp white shirt, buttoned up my chinos and knotted my polished to military standard shoes. There was no waiting time for our table, even though we were early, and we were situated at a central spot where we could see the kitchen crew blazing and service staff whirling effortlessly between guests, like a cool breeze delivering culinary treats with every turn. We were bombarded with the specials by an Italian genius in all things flavoured and delicious. Despite not really understanding what he had said we did feel that it was a rather good effort and worthy of mention here. Anyone with a more basic comprehension of Italain may be suitable impressed too and may even select a special to enjoy. The level of service was excellent, the wine selection was fantastic. The red was like drinking velvet and was sensibly priced in my opinion given the precision service and beautifully cooked food. I could go on and probably have done too much. Quite simply, we paid over $250, which is not cheap. However, you get what you pay for and we wanted great service, excellent options and perfectly cooked food. The dessert were also dreamy and when I go back to New York I shall definitely be looking forward to visiting again.

Expensive, good Italian

By Duck2727 |

We had appetizers from the antipasto bar- caponata and roasted red peppers, and both were excellent. The vitello tonnato was also delicious. For entrees, we all had pasta: pennette in a red sauce, and others. The flavors were excellent. The only other thing worth mentioning is that some things were unnecessarily pricey. For example, one of our party wanted a side order of pasta with his chicken dish, and it was ridiculously expensive (high teens.). In another instance, an iced tea was served in a wine glass with ice (2 sips for $5.00!) We felt they took opportunities like this to gouge you, and it took away from the overall experience. A lovely room, nevertheless.

Understated and Grand

By Ralph R |

I had lunch here the same day ad my disappointing dinner at a formerly grand seafood restaurant and the contrast reminded me what happens when a restaurant focuses on quality food and great service versus pretense. That inspired this review. While I eat her monthly I have never before reviewed this stalwart, reliable and deserving as it is. The menu is large and filled with traditional Italian gems, from simple rustic antipasti to handmade ravioli of delicate but plentiful taste on to veal with subtle herbal flavor to a finale of Italian cheesecake or tiramisu of perfect balance da umberto scores. This is worth every penny and your time.

As Italian as it gets

By Bruxelles32 |

Always when we are in NYC we make a trip to Da Umberto! It is a place were traditional good Italian cooking never ceases to surprise you. The food is constantly at highest level, but there is usually one or two dishes on the daily menu which stands out. Last time it was pumpkin ravioli cooked to perfection with bit of sweetness. This time it was insalata di polipo with crunchy farro and ultra rich risotto with sort of duck confit which we will treasure in our memories to the next visit, which hopefully will come soon.

Amazing Italian

By Maxz007 |

da Umberto is a phenomenal Italian restaurant. Beautiful space, awesome, friendly Italian service and amazing food. Every single dish is to die for: burrata, antipasto, butternut squash soup with mascarpone cheese, ravioli with ricotta cheese and truffle oil, salmon, unreal tiramisu. It is up there with Del Posto and Babbo; however, it is less expensive. I can't wait to go back there!

Last minutre with clients

By Lou M |

A quick call got us an early reservation for 6:30 - a few tables occupied, 20 minutes later the 2 rooms were packed! After hearing the very long special list and recommendation from our waiter, we ordered a few appetizers for the table; Calamari fra diavlo with some little pasta (almost like a cous cous) in a just fiery enough red sauce and a platter made up of our choices of the 10 antipasto dishes on display with some additional meats and cheese. Nothing disappointed! Bread was a hearty, crusty Italian served with butter and olive oil on the table. Liked that fact that we didn't have to ask for butter. Service was attentive and not rushed, even though the dinning room was full. Everyone agreed that dinner was one of the better Italian meals we had has in a while. An we eat out a lot! My dinner was a whole fish special, baked in the oven and deboned at the table. Great texture, flavor and combined with some of the "chef's choice" sautéed vegetables - not the typical, but a nice mix of zucchini, eggplant, squash and potatoes. Each retaining is own flavor. Very hard to do with a combo like that. Other had the Veal Milanese and Mixed Seaford grill. No complaints on their end. In fact they were pretty quite and concentrated mostly on their food. Desert was shown on a cart - Great Tiramisu that looked like you made it at home in a big white bowl, pastries, and other great looking deserts. About time an Italian restaurant served a Ricotta Cheese Cake instead of the "NYStyle". Fresh and perfect texture and flavor. Not overcome by vanilla or citrus. A must try. Even the Expresso was hot! Again, something I keep finding hard to come by after dinner. This is classic old work Italian that they seem to take pride in what they are serving, and know how to keep customer coming back. It may be a little pricy but when your meal is finished, well worth it. Da Umberto is going on my short list as one of places to go!

New Visit

I had been to this restaurant many times, but not recently. I was really happy to find it again. The food and the service were great and just as good as I remembered.

You Cannot Beat Da Umberto

By Holly K |

I adore having lunch here. I met my oldest friend, in from Nashville, for lunch. We had an unhurried and delicious lunch here. We talked and laughed and caught up, uninterrupted, and with no competing noise and no one to overhear us. My sense is that every one of the waitstaff wants you to enjoy yourself completely. And we did, from my friend’s magnificent vegetable antipasto platter to my grilled fungi with polenta crostini. It was all so flavorful. I had the melanzane, with roasted tomatoes and smoked mozzarella as a main course; it was perfect. My friend had the pappardelle with artichokes. It looked so good, and she seemed to enjoy it. For dessert, my friend had berries with zabaglione. It too looked scrumptious. You cannot beat Da Umberto.

Poor food, horrendous prices

By GabyDublin |

I visited recently with two friends. On arrival, we were given verbally a long list of specials for the evening. No information about prices was given for the specials. I chose one of these - basically a perfectly ordinary thin veal strip fried in breadcrumbs. It came with nothing else whasoever on the plate, was just short of being burnt and cost 52 dollars. When I asked why it was so expensive I was told that it was because it was a special. My friend had a tomato soup which was very overseasoned and we found that the only memorable aspect of the evening was the bill, which was truly exorbitant. There is much better value to be had in New York and we really felt we had been "had". I advise avoiding Da Umberto.

Always excellent

By NSN |

This is a great restaurants for both business and casual dining. The service is excellent, the specials are great, the wines are superb and every one who has gone there has enjoyed the food. The inner room near the kitchen has a great skylight which makes for lovely lighting; I prefer it to the main room. The tables are set far enough apart that you don't feel cramped. They do not rush you and are very gracious in accommodating all requests - my wife is vegetarian, and they always try to find new combinations for her..

The Good, The Bad and The Expensive

By Rosetwig |

We were excited to try Da Umberto after reading the good reviews. It started off well... gracious reception, and we were invited to choose our own table.. it was not yet crowded as we went early on a week night right after work. By the end of the night, the gracious service had morphed into intrusive, with dishes being whisked away seconds after we'd enjoyed the last bite. The food was good... the black ink ravioli with a cognac cream sauce was superlative. The eggplant parm was very good. The veal parm was way overpriced at $58 and was good but not great. The endive salad was good...acceptably overpriced at $15, as were the mixed drinks at $17. The kicker was the $25 glass of wine, recommended by the server without mentioning the price, or the vintage. That's the kind of treatment that can make a customer feel 'had'..... as if they think you're a tourist and won't be back. That wasn't the case with us, but after spending $300 for two appetizers, two mains and a few drinks, we won't be back.

More Italian than Italy!!

By Peeceecee |

Recommended by our guide book and we were not disappointed. Visited at lunchtime and felt as if we had walked in off the street in Firenze or Roma rather than NYC. A wonderful experience from start to finish - excellent attentive service and delicious food. Not cheap though.

Like being in Little Italy without the tediousness

By mad00145 |

If you find yourselves in Chelsea with an appetite, stop at Da Umberto. Nobody is going to fuss over over you but you'll get a great dinner and your service will be beyond reproach. Husband had a sublime pasta and I had salmon and broccoli rabe. It's a great option and very old school. But as you pace your food selections, save room for dessert. We did not. They have a dessert trolley and the offerings were incredibly seductive. You'll want to say yes...so skip the salad and save room for the tiramisu.

Great food and service

We brought a large international party here for a business dinner. Our service was crisp and engaging from the beginning. Every bit of food served was outstanding, expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. I like my reds from California and my whites from New Zealand, so confess I was somewhat confounded by the all-Italian wine list. Our server provided expert advice "mostly" within the suggested price range. Great place to enjoy a classy dinner and hey can handle a large party with ease!

It doesn't get better. Italian, deep and true.

By Wendy L |

Seriously great Italian at a seriously great Italian restaurant. Deeply authentic. Nothing trendy. Just incredibly well-prepared food, made beautifully with expertise and love. Came with a very large group (14) so we did both shared and individual ordering. We probably tried just about everything on the menu, from the starters to the pastas to the mains to the dessert. What do I recommend specifically? That you get a reservation, and go.

Not Outstanding

By Hencat |

Nice decor with traditional service. Food was very good, not great for the $$$. My veal chop was overdone. Not memorable except for the tab.

Still one of the great NYC Restaurants

By Ahg2 |

Ate here again recently on a family trip to NY. Have been coming here for 20+ years and the food and the service have remained consistently excellent. Pasta’s and Sole were fantastic. Deep wine list. Not cheap but nothing is in NYC.

Absolutely ridiculous

By Brendan H |

Fantastic. That's is the only word to describe it. Great location, food is mesmerizing. Everything is presented beautifully and tastes just phenomenal. Fantastic wine selection. We opted for the squid ink ravioli that were just to die for. Service is spectacular. The only thing I can knock it for is the lighting is super dim. Other than that, nothing but excellent things to say. Definitely recommend!! Will be back

Pricey but excellent.

By Gesie64 |

This is the perfect place to go for a romantic dinner, where price isn't too important. The food wasn't too expensive but the wine list is. We had cheapest chianti at $50 a bottle. The vegetable sampler is excellent, consisting of Brussels sprouts, eggplant, artichoke, red bell pepper, sweet potatoe and a large shrimp. Excellent! We had medium rare fillet mignon with peppercorn sauce, sautéed spinach (the very best I've ever had). Perfectly cooked and juicy! The fish was also excellent. Service is exceptional. Great ambiance. More dressy than casual.

At last,

By Holly K |

a restaurant in Chelsea that knows how to handle two women having a business lunch. We walked in off the slushy streets of Chelsea and were warmly greeted by a waiter, a bar tender and the maitre d. Our coats were taken and we were immediately shown to a quiet table. The space is light, calming and airy, with a glass-walled kitchen at the back. Our waiter arrived, charming but professional, and recited a long list of luscious-sounding specials. One of the specials, a tagliatelle with mixed wild mushrooms, caught my attention. With only a slight tweak for my dietary restraints (which were not a problem at all at Da Umberto), and a first course of sautéed spinach, my order was in. My business associate ordered similarly, staring with the butternut squash soup, which looked and smelled divine. The spinach was excellent, not too much EVOO, and just enough roasted garlic to flavor it well. The tagliatelle, a mix of wild mushrooms against the toothy pasta, was well-crafted and delicious. Service was just the right pace, and we were out of Da Umberto in just about an hour.

Dinner at Umberto

We were looking for a place to eat before we went shopping. We were lucky to be only two as we did not have a reservation. We enjoyed the food and hope to come back with some friends.

Amazed as always

By Earl q |

No potential issue left unnoticed. Pride in their efforts is World Class here. How places you know fix your wobbly table to ensure you have a great experience? They leave nothing to chance. The food was amazing, the ambiance was fantastic and the staff was great to be with. Thank you again for another amazing evening.

The best continue to be The Best

By Wishiii |

After 22 years coming here, the place feels even better; a warm greeting, prosecco at the bar along with great conversation. The wait staff is terrific, eager to help without being over-bearing, all the suggestions perfect. Dinner was outstanding. I order a special, my companion something not on the traditional menu. What's the answer? Of course!. Nice pace of service, outstanding food, all feeling a balance of formal and "at home". It's amazing. Dessert is the world's finest tiramisu and a leisurely limoncello. Want to impress someone? This is the place. Want to feel cherished? there's no better than Da Umberto.

Intimate and welcoming

By BCparent |

We had a reservation on a recent Friday night. We were early but the manager put us at a great table within a few minutes. Like earlier reviews, the pastas in particular are wonderful - clearly house made and delicious. We had no agenda and that was lucky because it was a leisurely pace to be sure. Our waiter was professional and friendly but I would have liked to see him a bit more. Be prepared for $200 a head (easy). I wasn't surprised and our wine selection contributed to that. It was clear there were lots of Friday night regulars and I was impressed that our reservation was honored 15 minutes early. The chicken Milanese was the one of our party had tasted. My beef tenderloin was a generous cut (even a tad too big) and cooked as I ordered it. Again, if you're fine with the price, the food, service and ambience are worth it.

Refined Italian in a Classy Environment

By ROBERT I |

Excellent cuisine with a varied menu. Very good, attentive service, but there are so many service people that there is a lack of continuity. You don't feel like you have a senior waiter and staff, there is a new player at various stages so you can never tell who is in charge. All of this comes at a price. The wine list is very good or better and has no bargains. Overall very expensive.

Excellent!

By David S |

Walk in and feel transported! Beautifully appointed, with an intimate bar up front, and an open kitchen to the rear. Nicely spaced tables, and professional wait staff (Fredy was great!). Bread just average. Well chosen wine list, predominantly Italian--why not?--and a bit pricey. We were a table of 6, celebrating our daughter's 50th, and each of us were more than pleased with our dishes (all ample, you won't go home hungry). Highly recommend the octopus appetizer, caesar salad (a cut above the typical), and assorted platter of meats, cheese and tidbits. Excellent branzino, chicken parmigiana, and shrimp scampi (again, superior to typical) entrees. Tartufo and tiramisu were fabulous, and perfectly brewed coffee was a welcome closing act. While "Da" has been around long enough to have become an icon of Italian dining in NYC, much to it's credit it is still firing on all cylinders...enjoy! D. Slater, Boca Raton

Really great food

By afelric1 |

Came here for a birthday dinner. The calamari was AMAZING. I also liked the arancini balls. The restaurant was cute, kind of small. Service was pretty good.

Delicious

By JMF521 |

A friend of mine and I just walked by and decided to stop in. What a great decision. From the entrance the staff was warm and receiving. The wait staff was extremely friendly, we had a great glass of wine, a nice serving size and a great menu to choose from. The sliced bread was fresh and some lovely olives with a little kick of spice. I had a deboned hen with crisp green beans and potatoes with an amazing white wine sauce reduction. We had an argula salad with a nice reduction on the salad with orange slices and Parmesan cheese slice. Refreshing and delicious. Will definitely go back with more friends, worth searching this place out!

They lack on transparency and over charge their confusing specials, they don't price wine by the glass, either.

By ME R |

The food is fairly good, however they tend to confuse you with specials. Ended up spending $ 58 for a" veal milanese" (no truffles) and $ 18 for a glass of chianti wine called supertuscan. This is a way to overkill your customer. Bad practice, in the long run.

Expensive but worth it!

By Thomas C |

My wife has been to Da Umberto a number of times, but this was our first visit as a family. It was expensive, but oh so worth it! My son had fried risotto balls for an appetizer and they were delicious. I had soft shell crabs for my entree and they were perhaps the best soft shells I've ever had. My son had the veal chop parmesan. Mm-mm! My wife had cornish hen in a rosemary brown sauce. She doesn't usually eat her whole dinner, but she did tonight. For dessert we shared tiramisu and panna cotta. Both were yummy! Service was very friendly and attentive. I highly recommend it!

Buyer beware!

By Kaye M |

Spoiled food. Overcooked, shoe-leather tough meat. Horrible vegetables. Rude manager. Overpriced. If this is your bag, by all means, please go.

Fantastic authentic Italian fare

By Troy V |

Friends of mine have been going here for literally 30 years and so I've been a number of times now when I have visited the city. Went for dinner again last night and it was fantastic! I only had the Beef Carpaccio as an appetiser and then the "raviolacci"-the truffle flavours in that dish were absolutely spot on. My wife had the scampi and then the spaghetti with clams, both were very good. The spaghetti had a fantastic hit of chilli. The restaurant has a fantastic ambience and is always busy. Overall it has a fantastic NY feel, a very good wine list, great service and is a restaurant I thoroughly enjoy.

Anniversary Dinner - not so special

By Ben K |

While the food is quite good - when it gets busy, you feel as if you are eating in the middle of Grand Central Station. The waiters are buzzing about and its all very frantic. For the price of the dishes - the environment should be much more calm.

Felt cheated!

By MauQ2014 |

My husband and I went to da Umberto's for Valentine's Day Dinner. Let me start out by saying that we fully expected to spend money. While the food was "ok" and the service was attentive, our meal was overpriced and our overall experience was extremely disappointing. Our waiter started off by trying to sway us away from the $50 bottle of wine we had ordered in favor of a $100 bottle "because it was younger"?! Really? While very polite, he returned to our table excessively throughout the meal to fill our glasses, pushing us to drink quickly so that we would order a second bottle; needless to say we found this annoying & uncomfortable. What really left a bad taste in our mouth, however, was the mistake we made by ordering the "appetizer sampler for 2" from the list of "specials" our waiter read to us. While we expected it to be pricey, we didn't expect to be charged individually for each appetizer in the "sampler" (4 in total) to the tune of $60! So essentially it was not a sampler at all, but instead we were tricked into ordering 4 separate appetizers and paying full price for each. Talk about deceitful! Bottom line is we felt cheated and will never return.

Amazing Local Italian

By Gary B |

Great Place- food and service are wonderful- neighborhood spot but one of the best in all of NYC - I highly recommend this fantastic place

Should be better

By wsdoyle |

Swell old New York Italian scene but minimal service compared to such UES pros as Elio's and Lusardi's. Maybe business is so soft they can't hire enough staff such as a bartender where the maitre D was slowly filling in causing 20-30 minute waits for drinks. Sort of buzzing but not with beautiful blonds, mostly guys in hanging out shirts. Acceptable food but not really worth a taxi ride. More of a neighborhood place.

Quality food

By Nikos T |

The food in this place is top notch. I actually picked this place for Italian over Little Italy and I'm glad with my decision.

Great wine selection, great service

By HMW |

The wait staff make you feel so welcomed. They aren't intimidating at all when you have questions. They have great wine choices, excellent appetizers and entrees. Just remember to save room for dessert!

Great Italian in a Lively Spot

By Jason S |

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Da Umberto, which is we discovered rather by accident. A lively place, we still found ourselves in a romantic nook to enjoy fine wine, outstanding pasta, and peerless service. It is a busy/loud place, but that's more our style. The waitstaff is incredibly helpful and hyper-attentive -- at times this may feel too much but your water and wine glasses are never empty! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and plan to return on our next NYC excursion!

Best secret in NY

By Michelle B |

We happened upon Da Umberto on our last day of a week of eating and drinking in NY . It started to rain ,we took cover in this lovely restaurant . It ended up being the highlight meal of the trip ! authentic , modern , Italian . Real career waiters with knowledge and passion . All our meals were fabulous. The daily specials were outstanding !! Small and cosy , I would highly recommend if you are into great food !

Elegant, Excellent Italian.

By PBJ |

Da Umberto is a fabulous, serious Italian restaurant. The waiters are professional, knowledgeable and attentive. We loved it. Excellent pasta, veal, lamb and creative cocktails. It is elegant but has a neighborhood feel. Loved it.

rip-off

By Joe O |

we went to da umbertos on a Friday evening. We did not have a reservation but got a table nonetheless. the table was lovely, the light was good (still bright outside perhaps) and the waiters friendly. We were not skimping so we ordered without asking prices. My wife had Dover sole which we later found out cost 59 US dollars---yes 59! I had a glass of wine, then another and that cost 50 UD dollars. I should have asked for prices---but then, you don't expect to be fleeced? service was overly prompt, forcing one to rush. No piece of fish is worth 59 dollars (and, as it happens, my wife did not enjoy it) and no glass of regular wine is worth 25. Try and be more honest da Umberto.

You have got to try the all in appetizer

By HenryNYC |

Wonderful food and experience in Da Umberto. The food is fabulous and service was great. The seating was perfectly arranged so despite in a crowded evening, you can still conduct a normal conversation, which is a real treat in restaurant in New York. The wait staffs are really knowledgeable so please do not hesitate to ask their recommendation. In lieu of picking antipasti for each of us, the wait staff suggested that all of us get a tasting antipasti plate which has a bit of everything and it was very, very good. I had the best calf liver I ever had. Go Monday evening and you can get a good table and good experience without being rushed.

Very, very good!

By Andre A |

We went for an early business dinner, and I am glad we booked. The restaurant is charming and the food is delicious! The deserts are also amazing and the staff very helpfull. Whenever in NY, I will go back!

Best Italian in NY

I just hosted a dinner for 9 at Da Umberto last week. I normally plan a business dinner there at least once a year. The quality of the food and service is always consistent.

Good restaurant but pretty expensive

Hi, the place is good, nice environment and a very good servicw. Nice food, delicious and plenty of different options. Too expensive in my perception but is a very good one

Italian to its Core

By Holly K |

This is such a magnificent setting, with great food and fabulous service. And on a 100+ degree day in Manhattan, to walk the six blocks from my office to Da Umberto is a commitment. It was worth it. The setting is serene. The waitstaff is professional and charming (not to mention handsome). I started with the spinach; crisp and delicious, with just the right touch of garlic, and moved on to the pennette; eggplant, tomato and Cacio over delicious penne. The mark of a good restaurant is how good the pasta is, even without a sauce. Ad Da Umberto's pasta is perfect. My three companions started with the arugula, peach and portobello salad. It looked divine, and from the lack of any trace of food on the plateS afterwards, I gather that it was. They each then had the special, a black truffle pasta, also apparently divine from the lack of a mere morsel left on their three plates. Da Umberto is special. Go. You will see.

A great dining experience

By CalcoteM |

Was recommended to Da Umberto by a friend and was definitely not disappointed. Don't be fooled by the unassuming storefront, the experience and food will be top notch. The mains we had were the braised short rib and the eggplant, and they were done perfectly. Every plate we saw go by looked fantastic as well. The service was beyond attentive, and we were never left needing anything. This one is a must. We'll definitely be back.

A pleasant surprise!

By Rabbit56 |

We noticed this restaurant was within walking distance of our apartment and decided to give it a try. We were pleasantly surprised! We tried their rosemary chicken, which the waiter said was a house specialty. It was delicious! They have a bar and a good wine list. Would go again next time I am in NYC.

Da Umberto and NYC fav

By Ndprusky |

One of our favorites in all of NYC. usually rally good...but we hit an off day when they had an inordinate number of celebrations that nite. I would check in advance if possible-it chained the usually lovely atmosphere to way too loud and impossible to hear fellow diners but food is delicious

Love it!

By Aurelie J |

Love the food here. You really wouldn't expect it hiding the way it is, but totally worth finding. Everything is just made with so much care here. I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menue

Sublime

By Architecture and food |

Reviews were good and the book we have on where chefs eat recommended this a lot. So we dropped in and were amazed. More upmarket that we thought initially but it is really a local family restaurant, I think we were the only tourists. A NY couple leaving recommended some food and told us it was fantastic, which we now totally agree with. The free bread came with beautiful oil. Goat cheese, beets salad and as divine, wonderful glamours. Mains of risotto, lovely, and herb crumbled trout, the best I’ve ever eaten. I should have had desert but it was hard to eat more.

Always good

By Galemaree |

We dine here every year it's a favourite great staff good food especially the fish and an extensive wine list The bar is terrific for solo dining

Great Vibe and Great Food!

By Mike |

We were recommended here by friends from NY, and wow, what a great place. Really welcoming, we first had lunch there and then booked again for Friday night. Great vibe and even better food - the specials were great, and even the humble carbonara was delicious with the fresh made spaghetti. Very attentive without being too much - a fab night and highly recommended!

Da Uberto Dec 2019

By James T |

Great food - a little loud, but would go again. They offered numerous specials in addition to the fare printed in the menu.

Excellent, authentic Italian food with a large wine list

By Mark S |

This was an excellent overall experience with the exception of the arancini. I had an asparagus starter and veal as my entree. We ordered arancini for the table and were disappointed - seemed over cooked. The desserts were also excellent. The group had a wide variety of dishes and all were pleased. I do recommend the restaurant, just avoid the arancini.

Delicious food, gracious service

By Rene C |

Being greeted warmly, and wishes a Happy Birthday upon entering helped to set the stage for an impressive dining experience. The tables were set with enough distance so as to have a feeling of privacy during the meal. The servers were knowledgeable and patient so as to ensure that we were choosing exactly what would make us happy. The courses were spaced appropriately, unhurried and yet no excessive waiting. We ordered from both the regular and specials menu-and were delighted by the presentation and flavors. Absolutely delicious!

Gets no better than this

By Alan N |

For many years, the Assante family has been treating me to fabulous Tuscan food, first at Centanni, now da Umberto. There isn't a thing that is fresh as can be. It takes a while to listen to the recitation of the specials, but it's time well spent. The pastas are fabulous, and they'll make you a plate of three tasting portions as an appetizer. On most nights, they serve roast pig, not a barbecue dish but rather a gourmet dish. The ambience is also terrific. Not much of a sign, but the outside is red. Well worth a trip.

Traditional Italian with Excellent Quality - As a Customer Make your Preferences Known

By Stella S |

We have been going to Da Umberto's for many years on and off. I would agree that it is a more expensive Italian restaurant, but if you order the right meal; you will be delighted. The wait staff is a bit hurried and not trained as if working at a fine restaurant - however, they do love food and can help you decide what you would prefer to eat. Ask about the specials and also clarify the wine list. This place has excellent appetizers and pastas as well as entrees. We normally share appetizers and pastas, which the staff does wonderfully. At times, it might feel rushed so let the staff know your preferred pacing. We do return as the spaghetti with clams, while simple is excellent as are the steaks and contorni. This is not a Pizza Italian place with inexpensive pasta, but rather a finer dining menu with perhaps service still rough around the edges.

Wonderful Dinner with Friends

By MemRunner |

My NYC friends are regulars here and I can see why, after my first, excellent meal here. They each had the delicious, tomato-based bread soup. I could not avoid the ravioli special and was glad I did not. One of my friends knew she could get Chicken Parmigiana, even though it was not listed; nothing left there. The Tuna special was also perfect and my sole was wonderful. The staff was attentive and helpful. I will be back!

Team Dinner for 10

By MICHAEL ASHWORTH |

Just outstanding for our team end of year dinner 10 of us were seated at a large circular table We had the mixed appetisers for the table, a trio of pastas and then individual main courses Everyone loved the food - the swordfish was outstanding as was the steak . Pastas were to die for Wine was great too - we had an excellent Amarone Service was top notch throughout Love this place

Excellent food in an elegant setting

By Gail D |

This neighborhood gem serves perfectly prepared, fine Italian specialties. The perfect service is enhanced by a romantically elegant ambiance.

Fancy Italian

By Sarahviz |

Service was very attentive & knowledgeable. My friend & I were very surprised that pasta didn’t come with our orders of chicken parm & eggplant parm…so beware of that.

Um Um GOOD!

By Mike L |

Celebrated my brother-in-laws 50th with our family. Prepare to spend about 125 per person with drinks and gratuity. You get what you pay for at this top Italian Chelsea restaurant. The wine list offers some sub $100 bottles; most are more. The salads; appetizers and main courses are really good. My wife said the veal chop parmigiano was amazing. Saturday was our 6th time at Da Umberto. Like I said ...UM UM Good!

Great food, great staff, great atmosphere

By dmn1110 |

Loved this restaurant. Food was great. We asked our waiter to prepare a antipasti platter for us with whatever he liked and it was absolutely delicious! Entrees were fantastic as was the tiramisu.

You can't Go Wong at Da Umberto

By Antionio10 |

I have been partonizing Da Umberto since it opened in 1987, The food was as good then as it is today. Among the 30 dishes that they recite and the other 30 on the menu, one has a lot of choice. It is all good. The service if good too -- very old world and professional. These waiters are not kids waiting for their next part off-off Broadway. The manager and son of the original owner knows his wine and runs the restaurant well. Be prepared to spend a little. Per person with a cocktail, and two bottles of wine, three courses, tax and tip the tab was $150. Given the volume of food and drink, that isn't bad.

Consistently Great

By Ahg2 |

Have eaten here for many years and the food, service and atmosphere continue to delver an outstanding experience. The wine list, while not long, contains some great choices. Desserts are also fantastic. Bring money.

Need more attention to detail

By Joan M |

Had lunch at Da Umberto today and while they deserve 4 or possibly 5 circles for service and extremely attentive waiters, I was surprised when my friend and I received our salads. We both ordered the same salad. It was clear that one salad (unfortunately, mine) was vastly smaller, had less ingredients. Both salads had a goat cheese topping. Mine was lopsided and tossed haphazardly onto the plate. A good kitchen does not let a salad go out like that. I can't fault the salad which was good and as I said so was the service but this restaurant needs more attention detail and sharper, more careful kitchen prep.

Great

By Navigate573800 |

My favorite rest in NYC ..great food ,the service is impeccable.. fairly priced...Jean Paola is a great host . family owned been there for decades...no problem parking..no corporate nonsense

Must Visit

By Scott s |

First time here and I loved it. The service was amazing and the food was even better. I was unable to find anything really critical to say about this restaurant. Would I go again, a million times yes. Side Note* restaurant owner, you should get better signage for your establishment. But that didn't even matter after the dinning experience we had.

Excellent attention from the moment you walk in!

By Victoria T |

The staff are so attentive, yet not intrusive. Quiet ambience, very simple and the menu is very varied. I had the grilled octopus as an appetizer and it was delicious. Besides the regular menu there are of course daily specials and all sound wonderful.

Not inexpensive BUT worth every penny

By arubalad |

One of the best aspects of dining here is the service, it is unbelievably efficient and friendly. The two meals we had were excellent. Both of us were more than contented and full We will be back. We left very satisfied could not of asked for more

You Have to Be Kidding Me

By LovetoTravel12453 |

My husband and I travel to NYC usually one or more times a month and have dined at many fine restaurants in NYC. I guess the thing that irks me the most about some NYC restaurants is the attitude that unless you are a "somebody" in their book, you are a "nobody" and thus can be treated as such. I opine that it may be that we have a (202) AC associated with our phone number, and thus, not viewed as frequent NYC diners...We arrived well in advance of our 7:00 p.m. reservation and although the restaurant was empty with the exception of one other table, we were promptly escorted to the rear room in the restaurant ("Siberia") which was not nearly as charming as the front area of the restaurant. If that wasn't bad enough, the wait staff began to rearrange tables near us for the first twenty minutes of our dining experience, without so much as an apology from management for the distraction/noise. At the end of the meal, we had to request our bill from another waiter because ours had disappeared over the course of the evening. This is the treatment we received for spending in excess of $400 for dinner at Da Umberto. We will NOT return.

One of the Great NYC Reaturants

By Ahg2 |

Have been dining at Da Umberto for over 20 years. They will make whatever you want, daily specials are always outstanding. Excellent wine list.

Dinner with colleagues-exquisite!

By Julie C |

Had dinner with 10 out of town colleagues last week. The service was excellent and the environment cozy and comfortable. Each item that was served was delicious! Surprisingly superb. I had gazpacho for starter and the salmon as an entre. Both very good. Other had pasta, chicken Etc. Everyone enjoyed their meal.

NOT WORTH THE HIGH PRICE TAG

By catrina717 |

I dined here last night - i called three separate times telling the restaurant that I MUST have a round table- when i got to the restaurant they had me at a square table right in FRONT of the kitchen - I was upset and the manager made us wait 10 minutes and gave us a round table - we ordered drinks and the rest of the night was a success BUT - beware - we ordered specialty dishes that our waiter suggested we order - everything was delicious except for my entree - over cooked medallions of veal - SO for 7 people we paid 1500 before tip - we had three bottles of wine that were 75 dollars each - I would rather dine at Del Posto -at least the ambiance would go with the food -

Long overdue review

By travelalottoliveitup |

Over the years I have enjoyed Da Umberto for it's very high level of skill in the kitchen as well as waitstaff and reception. They are pros with a real and warm 'family' approach. The food is excellent. There are many fine places to dine throughout Manhattan and you should put this one on your list.

Excellent upscale Italian restaurant

By Ellen M |

This meal was a lovely experience of Italian excellence in the city. Our entrees were expertly prepared and the service was perfect. We enjoyed some special dishes and several off the regular menu. The bread was exceptional, the salads were fresh and the red sauce was very good.

By rjb826 |

Da Umberto has been one of my favorites for years. The food is always top shelf, along w service and atmosphere. Within reason if it isn't on the menu or a special, they will make it for you. I take friend there often and I am always very pleased

First time will be the last time here!

By drbarolo |

Went for our daughter's 30th birthday. Ordered a variety of appetizers, pastas and entrees from one waiter. After receiving one of the appetizers, a different waiter came over with menus for us to order food again. Total confusion of the staff. Never got our second appetizer. Next came two of the three pastas we had ordered and they were bland. When we asked for the 3rd pasta, they said they would put in that order again, which came a half an hour later. That pasta with clams was the only thing good, but not great. I have no idea how this restaurant gets good reviews. I don't usually write negative reviews but this place was an awful disappointment.

Expensive and poor cuisine

By Wow_Triper07 |

A disappointing lunch. Perhaps a day gone by it deserved to be included among the Michelin mentions (which not always are easyjet to understand). In our case the quality has Bern les than mediocre and the prices, especially of the wines, exaggerated. When a restaurant charges more than 20 bucks for a glass, you should always show the customer the wine list. I will not be back for sure.

Great restaurant

Really great

By Herman G |

Always loved da Umberto but did not go for years. Yesterday we went for a family birthday. Very friendly and professional service and still a great environment many years later. A wide selection of very tasty specials. The drinks are perfectly prepared. The food looks and tastes great. A perfect northern italian menu . The wide and yummy selection of desserts tops it all. Will be back.

Hidden Gem!

By JA4207 |

Food was fantastic -- recommendation from a local, had no idea it was there! Tucked away on 17th and 6th avenue, and very nondescript from the outside, the inside is beautiful and modern. Service is excellent -- let the staff put together a hot/cold antipasto platter for you and a pasta tasting, you won't be disappointed. Desserts were okay, but don't let that deter you from going!

The food is good but boy do you pay for it

By Jim T |

The reason I gave this review of a 3 as opposed to a 5 it's not because of the quality of the food is because of the pricing of the food. It is ridiculous. I don't mind paying more for good food but this was extremely overpriced and not worth the over pricing. I was with a party of six that order the special appetizer and unfortunately we did not ask the price. It turned out for the six of us it was $186. That's $31 a piece just for the appetizer. For that reason I have no intentions of going back to this restaurant.

Perfect

We enjoyed a wonderful meal here. The restaurant is elegant, comfortable and has a great energy. The food was terrific and everything was served with great efficiency. They offer a wonderful wine menu.

One of my favorite NYC restuarants

By Jason Whitholm |

Have been going to this restaurant for what must be almost 20 years but recently fell in love with it all over again. The food is incredible, service and setting are amazing and the entire experience is top notch. I truly can't think of a more consistently good New York City Italian restaurant than Da Umberto and I have been to many. From the minute you walk in the door you are treated as though you are family. I can't say enough wonderful things about the food and the entire dining experience. Pricing is reasonable as well for the type of restaurant that it is. Run, don't walk, to Da Umberto. It is a wonderful restaurant.

This is the best restaurant in the area!

This is fresh, authentic, Italian cuisine. It has excellent service and a nice wine list. There aren't a lot of really nice restaurants in this area of the City. If you are anywhere near here, you won't be disappointed.

Another wonderful dinner after the Halloween Parade

By Justin W |

I joined other volunteers and staff members for the Volunteers Dinner at Da Umberto and the food and the service were wonderful. After a cool October evening of marshaling the Halloween Parade, the restaurant staff could not have been more gracious and welcoming. I always love the food here. The Chicken Parmesan, the Sautéed Lemon Shrimp and the Ravioli here are excellent. Even the vegetables like the Roasted Potatoes and the Steamed Broccoli were a treat. The staff was very friendly to everyone and was on top of filling in the buffet for a group of hungry volunteers. It really was a wonderful evening. Thank you to the staff of Da Umberto for being part of our tradition!

First class food and service

By zerman17604 |

Not my first dinner here ... lunch and dinner are always excellent from service, menu, incredibly attentive "invisible" staff. The toughest part is narrowing the selection. Longing to return.

Phenomenal!

By Grassi3081 |

My wife and I stumbled upon this place and saw that it was Michelin rated. A gentleman sitting on the stoop next to the restaurant said that it was one of the best Italian restaurants in the city which convinced us to make a reservation on the spot. Well, we are very glad that we did! From the extremely warm welcome, to the excellent wine recommendations, service and food, from top to bottom an amazing experience. Everyone was so friendly and made you feel right at home. We had the spaghetti and clams which was fantastic and also the pork chop special which was the best pork chop I had in my entire life. We usually don't revisit the same restaurants very often because there are so many new places to try in the city but we will be back here without a doubt!

Felt taken advantage of despite good food and service

By JJK13 |

Our party of eight was late and the maitre’d was quite accommodating. The food was good as always and the service very good. However.... I felt taken advantage of by the restaurant. Two of my guests were served four thin raviolis for an entree. And the wines....every single one priced 3-4X retail when 2-2 1/2 maybe 3X is the market norm. I won’t go back. Previously, it had been a go to for large parties.

Halloween Buffet dinner after the parade

By Justin W |

This was the second time we went for dinner at Da Umberto after the Halloween Parade and the food and the service was consistent with the last visit. The Sauteed String beans were excellent, so well cooked and well seasoned, the Rigatoni in a sausage Vodka sauce was delicious and so well cooked. The sausage added a nice flavor to the pasta and the Calamari was lightly fried and the dipping sauce was great. The service could not have been more attentive to our party.

Underwhelming and overpriced

By mindy k |

The restaurant has truly gone downhill. The portions are smaller and underwhelming and the prices are out of control. I guess the pandemic has caused them to forget about what they used to be like. We loved going here. Not anymore. Much better places in nyc to spend our evening. Tables were not distanced and staff was very busy with chatting to each other.

Italian food served with a smile

By BuntySussex |

My friend Jim suggested this place and he was so on the money- speaking of which it's more couture Versace than outlet Gucci so get someone else to pay:) ok to the serious stuff, mozzarella so creamy you could apply it, spaghetti vongole cooked to perfection and only one of us had a dessert, sadly not me which on the up side means I have to return. Great service and a wonderful place to be with friends.

Noisy, but excellent food

By engineerartist |

My first visit was many years ago, and the restaurant is much more elegant now. My wife enjoyed the herb-crusted wild brook trout and I had the seared Scottish salmon. Both dishes were excellent. We shared a serving of delicious roasted brussel sprouts. The desert cart temped us and she had the chocolate cake and I enjoyed the ricotta cheesecake.

Very nice Italian with excellent service

By Global-EXEC-Travel |

I live very close to this restaurant but this dining experience was my first. The inside far exceeds any first impression you may get from the outside. The food was fantastic, we had the Cavaletti and truffle ravioli. They were both big hits. The service was further top notch.

Solid, Italian Standby

We've dined at Da Umberto many times and have always been very satisfied with our meals. Last night we went with four friends and everyone was pleased with the meal and the service. I particularly like the swordfish and had it again yesterday. The pasta and shell fish got high marks from our friends. The wine selection was good, but not outstanding. No one had dessert, but those of us who cappuccino agreed it was excellent. The noise level was a bit elevated.

Good Italian.

Visited with friends with whom I have enjoyed the services of many upscale restaurants and we agreed the afternoon was a special treat. Very attentive staff, well prepared and presented dishes. Not cheap but we agreed we would definitely return.

Very good

Overall great service and good ambiance. The menu is great and the appetizers were delicious. The risotto (which, in their defense, is probably the most difficult Italian dish to make) was way over cooked. Still a five stars and I'd go back but, at that price range, they need a little improvement.

An all time favorite!

Seasonal offerings are perfectly prepared and always at the height of freshness. Have been going here for many years and always treated with great respect and incredible service.

Lost in translation

By jim g |

Went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend who is a foodie. He advised that you will feel like you are in Italy. In some respects he was right, the waiter had such strong accent that it was difficult to understand him. However this added to the charm and we understood enough to order one of the specials. There is a long list of specials but the waiter failed to mention the prices. We assumed that since most of the entrees are around $30 that the specials generally would be in the range as well, or the waiter would have mentioned. Big mistake, we ordered a simple veal dish that was $60. Had we know the price in advance, we would have ordered something from the menu. While the food was generally good and we would rate it a 4 star for quality and price - the sticker shock from this special left a bad taste in our mouths. Also the service was unduly efficient, which would couldn't figure out whether they were being solicitous or rushing us.

Incredible experience, great food.

My first visit was unforgettable at Da Umberto. The caprese salad was fresh and tasty. The pasta sampler had the absolute best ravioli I have ever had, and I eat at great restaurants all over the country. The white fish special was really, really good, I highly recommend. The service was very attentive and efficient. I would go back in a heartbeat!

What a rip-off like being mugged!

By p0eta |

1--Overall, da Umberto has mediocre Italian fare no better than more reasonably priced, authentic choices at Trattoria Trecolori on 47th and 8th Av or Carmine's on 44th St and 7th Av. 2--Waiter rattles off specials never saying prices, no written menu to even keep track of what they are so then, when you get the bill, you're in shock at the overpriced choice you made i.e. costoletta veal topped with cherry tomatoes $58 was ridiculous! 3--The written regular menu says one price $22 for an eggplant pennette pasta but the bill raised it by $2. 4--Two glasses of cabernet at bar while you wait = $40. With dinner, one glass of Barolo GL = $25, one Super Tuscan = $18. Again no written wine list shown at bar or at table so you cannot prove these prices. Don't order without seeing THE list. 5--Our 2 appetizers of funghi/calamaretti that were $15/18 were so skimpy that as the waiter served each onto our plates, we barely got one bite each! 6--The noise level was deafening that Thursday evening. We have eaten in enough Italian restaurants, up-and-down Italy, east-to-west USA, to know that we were had at this place whose tripadvisor ratings are hyperbolic deceptions. Bottom line, their $230 total bill left us still hungry but full of resentment. Caveat emptor!

Rushed and very UNromantic

By LindaRoseNY |

Every wedding anniversary we go to a show and a special restaurant for dinner. This year we chose Da Umberto. Per our usual practice, we let them know it was a special event, if just so that we would not get the worst table in the house. But our event seemed lost on them. Our table was ready, the food was very good. But we were rushed through dinner, which would have been disconcerting even if it had NOT been our anniversary. Examples, We ordered before dinner drinks, and almost immediately upon their arrival we were asked what we wanted to eat - no time to enjoy the drink. Entrees arrived immediately after appetizers. There were literally no more than 10 seconds between the time when our dinner plates were removed and when the dessert tray was whisked over. By that time I was quite annoyed, and said, "we just finished our entrees, could you give us a few minutes?" They gave us five minutes. The entire dinner took only a little longer than an hour, and seemed timed that way deliberately. When I go to a "fine" restaurant, I expect a two-hour experience. To make matters worse, there was not the slightest acknowledgement of our wedding anniversary. Every one of our previous 26 was acknowledged by the restaurant of our choice in some way, even if it was just a special design on our dessert plate. If this is Da Umberto's policy, okay. But don't expect to have a romantic evening here. It's more suited for a business lunch, when you have to be back to work by 2:00 p.m. Near the bottom of our 27 wedding anniversary experiences, good food notwithstanding.

It's the small things

Upscale high rep place. A little off. We were lucky to score an outside table. Inside was full by 630PM on a weeknight and noise level truly uncomfortable. Table bread seemed housemade, fresh and chewy. Asked for a second basket, it never came. Assortment of salads---all beautifully presented, fresh greens. Bus people and servers quick, unobtrusive, well trained. Entree a pasta with baby artichokes. Pasta probably in house, perfectly al dente. Artichokes not properly cleaned, leaving to little hard bits left on plate. Hard time getting wait staff throughout meal; this place may be having a personnel problem like so many restaurants. Price points - it's like they took a menu from a decent Italian restaurant and multiplied everything. including beverages, by 15 to 20%.

Fabulous Evening

Food was Magnificent. Service was Impeccable! Ambience was Perfection. Amazing Experience. So Happy we chose this restaurant for my first NYC trip and on my birthday!

Hidden Italian Gem

By Wiltonsjs |

Great little Italian restaurant hidden away in Chelsea. Excellent, attentive staff. Superb kitchen delivers awe-inspiring Italian classics. Get the antipasto "supreme" to begin with - the staff will assemble for you, this time included a squash blossom stuffed with Taleggio. Amazing. Not cheap...but worth every penny.

Great Food and Service

By LouisL100 |

We came here for dinner on a Friday night. The atmosphere was very lively and pleasant. My wife has rather severe allergies and I noted this at the time we made the reservation. Once we were seated, the manager came over to discuss them and assured us they would be able to accomodate. It made my wife feel very comfortable and they were true to their word. Service and food were excellent but about 1/3 of the way in both my wife and I kept smelling a funny odor. It was coming from one of the other diners at another table. The manager sensed something was wrong and immediately came over. I explained about the smell and he immediately moved us then and there. I don't know many places that would have picked up on our discomfort that quickly.

Great Food Amazing Staff

We attended a private party at Da Umberto. The food was delicious and the staff worked very hard keeping drinks filled and making sure everyone was happy.

authentic unpretentious Italian

By rnarisetti |

This courteous and contemporary old-school Italian restaurant just off 6th avenue has a large menu, a surprisingly large number of daily specials (the most I have had a waiter recite in a long time), and a terrific, understated look and feel about it. Good for a lovely Italian meal and conversations. Dinners seem busier than the relatively empty lunch times on weekdays.

Great business lunch

By yvonnepa86 |

Went here for a business lunch recently, and loved it. The waiter prepared us an antipasto plate from the antipasto bar-- the assortment was amazing and everything was delicious. Cavatelli pasta was very tasty, and tiramisu was fantastic. Everyone in our group enjoyed their lunch. Great attentive service too.

love this great italian restaurant just off 6th ave in chelsea. ive eated here a dozen times and its consistantly excellent. great veal and chicken dishes and a lot of specials

Really Enjoyed

By MattieBo |

Good food and service. Was seated toward the back -- close to kitchen. Was a bit noisy and not conducive to nice quiet dinner conversation. Front was like wise a bit noisy. Ask for table in middle section. Simone, the bar tender was excellent. made a nice mezcal Negroni for me. Angel hair pasta diablo was excellent as was shrimp and Caesar salad. Wines by the glass were way too pricey for what you got. The tuscan at $18/glass was a bit sour.

Great wine selection and good service

By marisa13 |

Their wine selection is excellent, and when I didn't care for my choice, they quickly replaced it with a far better offering. The food, though, was uneven at best and the service, while very friendly, was a bit slow. The first suggestion I'd make to improve the customer experience would be to print the list of specials -- it's so long, that by the time our server got to the end of the list, we'd forgotten most of the choices. Appetizers were good: an excellent prosciutto and mozzarella combo, and a somewhat disappointing salad (VERY little on the plate other than mixed greens). As for our entrees: my husband had a duck risotto, which, while the flavor was good, wasn't very creamy (with somewhat undercooked rice), and one would never know that there was duck in it. I had the ravioli with lobster sauce, which was delicious, but it was almost all pasta -- very, very little filling and a scant amount of lobster sauce on top. Our friend had a chicken and kale dish, with delicate flavors, but the chicken was a bit dry. My husband and our friend split a tiramisu for dessert, which they both enjoyed very much.

Real Italian

Very good choice of dishes, also excellent wine list at reasonable prices. Service typically Italian, helpful, quick, friendly and efficient. Food excellent.

First Time Diner

By Jjs57 |

We visited Da Umberto last night. It is a very nice small Italian restaurant in Chelsea, on a very nice block. Service was excellent. Food was as well. We had the Veal Meatballs, Arugula salad and the Charcuterie, all excellent, especially the meatballs. For mains courses we had the Papardelle with bolognese, Spaghetti and clam sauce and the veal chop parm, all over the top good. Small but very nice wine list. This is authentic Italian dishes with a very warm atmosphere. Definitely on the list of must visit places in NYC

Dinner and a loan

This is an ordinary Italian restaurant with mediocre appeal. The food is no better than half the Italian restaurants in the city at half I he price, No kidding!

try to be fancy but didn't get it

By KyleWV |

I would consider Da Umberto is an old style fancy Italian restaurant. Overall the taste of the food was fine but a bit over priced. The worst part was the service because they were "too good". Plates come really fast, cleaning the table really fast. Being pushy in selling dishes (if you like to be told what to order, then this is the place for you)... all above are the reason why they do not have good services. I wouldn't go back after trying twice with basically same experiences.
