Absurd grasp on tipping culture

By Foodiewithaview |

During our family vacation in New York, we decided to dine at the deluxe Green Bo restaurant. While the food itself was quite enjoyable, including the tasty soup dumplings and various noodle and chicken dishes, our experience was marred by the disappointing service provided by the staff. When it came time to settle the bill, we left a 20% tip, as we understand it is customary in the United States. However, to our surprise, the waitress insisted on receiving more gratuity. As British visitors, tipping is not an expectation in our culture, yet we still strive to show appreciation and often tip even more. Regrettably, this experience has left a negative impression, and we do not plan to return to the restaurant. Despite the delicious food, the subpar service overshadowed our overall dining experience.

Second visit in 3 months!

By Lawrence Ngan |

This is a very good Shanghai (Chinese) restaurant. We ate there in March and there were some more dishes I wanted to try. So, we go back again this month. The prices are very reasonable and it’s BYOB. We had the Tong Po pork last time which was excellent. We have the sautéed eel with sprouts this time and it’s equally good. The fried pork bun is also very good! Don’t miss it!

Late snack

By Jill |

Food was served quick and was piping hot. Food was good but they do not make egg rolls just spring rolls. Prices were very reasonable but there is a $5 minimum for each person sitting at the table. Service was friendly. Floors were a little dirty but overall a decent place for a quick snack!

Did not enjoy the food.

By Shaqjak |

We went to Nice Green Bo at the recommendation of some friends in Sept. We did not enjoy the food. The dumplings fell apart and the chicken lo mien noodles tasted a little too doughy, we could not eat it, the scallion pancake weren't bad though. The atmosphere was cramped as expected but it wasn't loud or anything. The waitress was nice. The grade pending in the window did not help either. I would have given a better rating but I did not enjoy the food at all. Maybe it was just the day we went but I cant give a good review.

Great dumpling house

By WillowsInOz |

Very tasty dim sum. Also try the aromatic beef soup. Try not to over order though!! Was quite quiet when we were here, but it was a Monday afternoon in mid-January.

Tip

By BIn R |

My frequent eating place in China town. However, this time I was little bit annoyed as they included 'tip' as well in the bill, marking it in chinese. No way of knowing it unless you now the language. I realized after I left the restaurant paying 18% additional tip. Also, prices went up. Not the way it used to be. Waiting line is also getting longer. Need to find alternative place...

Love the dumplings, both...

Love the dumplings, both pork and veggie! Also, the green beans with Chinese spicy cabbage is also really really tasty!

Nice Green Bo

By mary c |

I go to New/Nice Green Bo everytime I visit NYC, a few times a year. I was first introduced to the tiny storefront in 2005 by natives who assured me of the establishment's delicious fare. I was pleasantly surprised to experience a *ahem* hole-in-the-wall establishment live up to it's rave reviews. To put it simply, Green Bo is a tiny kitchenette with fluorescent lighting, mirrored walls, rushed waiters and wonderful steamed dumplings. Everything I have tried on the menu is great. Scallion pancakes, beef with broccoli, lo mein, etc. But rest assured this isn't a Michelin five star experience. It's a cozy little Chinatown spot with inexpensive, delicious food. I am a bit disappointed that this place has been "discovered" over the past few years and gets packed out at times. But, I'm sure the hard-core foodies discovering Green Bo for the first time are a bit disappointed in the ordinary (but incredibly delectable) eats that restaurant provides.

Nice veggies and sesame chicken but didn't blow us over

By Ange516 |

We went to this restaurant on a stroll through Chinatown and because they had lots of snippets in the window praising their food (even thought they also have a grade B sanitary rating on that window). The much praised dumplings were nice but a bit doughy, the sesame chicken was delicious, the vegetables (bok choi and spinach) were excellent and the pork was disappointing. It's a place to come and eat, it doesn't have much atmosphere. The service was good. We missed the legendary garlic chicken on the menu that we had in Chinatown a few years ago at a different restaurant... Probably won't come back.

Great Find

By mbf988 |

Nice (formerly New, interesting name change) Green Bo is a great place stop to stop for lunch in Chinatown. If you go there expecting good food, not southern style hospitality, you wont be disappointed. When greeted, you might get a shout of "how many" then pointed (with 1 finger, to a Disney CM that seems offensive now) to a table. But the menu size, prices, taste, portion and temperature are all above average. Scallion pancakes are a great way to start and the pork and crab tiny buns are rightfully a signature dish. My time in Manhattan is always scarce, so I usually will just split a few things then go across the street to the ice cream factory for a sweet wrap up.

Honestly, you might want...

By capuchin44 |

Honestly, you might want to pass eating in here and just get it to-go, because everything else on the menu pales in comparison to the mini juicy buns.

OMG

This was the best dim sum we’ve ever had. The place is nice and most of the times not populated. Great food other than dim sum as well and nice service

Don't Go for the Atmosphere

By StepMorris1 |

(Note: the name of this restaurant is now the Nice Green Bo) Formica tables, noisy, fast turnover, functional service ... this is not the place to go for a romantic evening. If you've got a group that can entertain yourselves, however, then this is the place to go for an inexpensive feast. The scallion pancakes and soup dumplings were the best I've ever had. And the other dishes--sesame chicken, crispy whole fish, vegetable dumplings, noodles and fried rice were close behind. There was none of the heavy oiliness that bogs down other Chinese cooking. Flavors were crisp and distinct. Seasoning was well-balanced. Service was, if anything, too prompt. Our group had a great time, and it didn't matter that the tables were a little shabby. The food and the low prices more than made up for it. BYO wine and beer.

Disappointing

By Alan S |

Maybe we chose badly (pork dumplings, prawns with walnuts and broccoli, pork noodles, shanghai fried rice) but we found the food was a bit bland. The portions were generous though. The place is somewhat shabby, but that is often a good sign if they have a reputation for good food like this place.

Great food, reasonable prices!

By shawnCA |

We really enjoyed our dinner here - shanghai dumplings were amazing! seafood chow mein delicious, pot stickers really good. highly recommended!

Great food, 1950 prices

By harveycritic |

The Nice Green Bo has lines on weekends but go during the week especially at off-hours and you'll get a real treat. Even vegans can profit from patronage: just order vegetarian shumai, scallion pancakes and mock vegetarian duck. Food is served hot when ready, so don't be surprised if you get two or three hot dishes at the same time. The scallion pancakes at $5.95 are a revelation.

Yum!

By nenna2017 |

This place is cheap and delicious. I recommend the scallion pancakes, the soup dumpling, the peking duck, and the eggplant with garlic sauce.

Not generous portions

By Grateful_Sojourner |

Had the ribs special, fried fish, fried rice, and a chicken dish. Tasty like your typical Chinese food, but much better that your neighborhood take out. It seemed their portions are less than other Chinese restaurants I've eaten at. Service is minimal and cash payment is required. No decor and bathroom is only functional.

Cheap eats

By MiloLeChat |

We craved comfort food one evening and found this restaurant through Google Maps. We ordered scallion pancakes, sui ma dumplings with sticky rice and ham, bowl of rice noodles and spicy pork stir fry over rice. Way too much food for 2 people! Good portions, tasty and cheap!

I love it

By BioMajorNewJersey |

Ok, heres the deal, I am 18 and my grandfather is the co-owner of this restaurant. The service is great, but it could just be the fact that i am his grandson. I usually never eat here cause i get the food for free, and i don't want to trouble my grandfather that way. If i could i would eat there a lot often. For people that dont see it on the menu, i really reccomend the spring roles. ITs a childhood favorite of mine.

Not as good as it was

By GadiB69 |

We visited the restaurant after a long time we didn't visit NYC. They changed the name a little bit (maybe changed owners). In the past this restaurant was our favourite in Chinatown. We went to a lunch. They put us in a round table with a local family. Noodles Won Ton soup-average. Seafood chaw mein-good Chicken cashew nuts- average . Prices OK, service-standard.

Amazing Dumplings

By andrew g |

If you have ever been to Crystal Jade in China, or Din Tsai Fong in Taiwan and you enjoy dumplings this is the closest thing to it. I am a huge dumpling fan, and over the years have become extremely picky when eating dumplings. A little like my sushi. The dumplings here are just amazing, and I try to come here every time I go to NYC. The service is not the best, the place is not the cleanest, but these dumplings are absolutely amazing. For those of you who have been to Crystal Jade or Din Tsai Fong, I know that I am making a big statement. Those places are defiantly better, but the ones here are not far behind.

Great food shame about the hostile approach for a tip

By Andyyy6 |

We really enjoyed the food here , very close to real genuine Chinese food you could get in China. The Shanghai dumplings were fabulous. Unfortunately ruined at the end by 3 particularly aggressive waitresses who intimidated my wife to giving them a more generous tip. Not impressed by that

Correct, without being transcendent

By Mementovivere06 |

Restaurant very simple, without fuss. Popular. The kitchen is very decent without being extravagant. The portions are standard. We have to pay in cash. The toilet could use some refreshing. The Value for Award is good.

Good food, love the service

By gman1868 |

Went there in August of 2012. Felt like we were in an episode of Seinfeld when it came to the service. It was hilarious! The food was good and the prices better. Don't upset the waiter or... No Food For You! All joking aside, they may be curt, but they do a great job and the food was delicious.

Soup Dumplings!

By HuntleyNewYork |

Another reviewer mentioned Crystal Jade in China, which we really enjoyed in Hong Kong. Din Tai Fung in Shanghai was also fantastic. New Green Bo isnt quite up to either of these, BUT NGB's soup dumplings are great and after many meals there, its been rare that we've ordered anything else there we didnt love too. Its cramped, its crowded, you share tables with strangers, the decor isnt really decor at all. But these are the charms of NYC chinatown. We ALWAYS intentionally order too much food ... so we can take the leftovers home!

Great food at a fantastic price!

By LouisianaTravelGirl |

While walking around Chinatown another traveler overheard my party and I talking about finding a good place to eat. We were told The Green Bo was a great little place to try and so we did. The place was nice and the food was yummy! I loved the hot tea that was brought to our table as soon as we sat down. We were given plenty of food with lots leftover. The best part was the price! Not expensive at all! I would definately reccommend!

Go for the food, not the ambieace

By wtklemp |

If you think Canal Street is representative of China town, you're wrong. If you think a chain Chinese restaurant with stone horses out front is representative of Chinese food, you're wrong. To really get an idea of what China town really is, drop one block South of Canal to Bayard Street. If you want an idea of what traditional Chinese food is, visit Nice Green Bo. You aren't going for the ambiance. You're not going because they have lettuce wraps. You're going because you want to eat some good Chinese food with lots of options that are confusing and delicious. Our group had two appetizers of steamed dumplings. Outstanding. We all had entrees. I've got no idea the names of the dinners my friends ordered, but they were all outstanding. I had the Singapore Mein Fun. That was the name. No idea what I was going to get, but it was dang good. Entire bill with a pretty big tip was only $80 for 4 of us. Excellent value for the money. China town isn't African Immigrants selling bootleg purses and knock off watches. Don't be scared to get off the beaten path. China town won't bite. .

Has gone downhill

By Abbadaba |

I use to love this place. My family has been eating there for at least 5+ years. My last experience was miserable. I will say the food usually is fast an excellent. This time the dish that typically took 30 minutes to come out (peking duck) was the first to come out. The other dishes, chicken and broculli and broculli and garlic sauce came out later. As the waiter started to prepare the peking duck wraps at the table he knocked a can of soda onto my wife. As those at the table were scrambling for napkins, he continued to prepare the meal. I asked him to stop and get a towel and napkins. Instead of stopping, he continued to prepare the duck wraps and yelled to someone else to get them, they came back with 4 napkins. He never replaced the soda. The rest of the food came and was subpar compared to where is has been in the past. It has gone down hill over the years. At the end of the meal the bill was $70, in the past we had never had a bill more then $50 and we order the same food. We asked for an explaination and wasn't given one. They billed us for the soda as well. We did not tipped well because of the extremely poor service. As we were outside the waiter came out and yelled at us for the lack of tip. Poor food, poorer service. I would not recommend this place.

A hole in the wall but GREAT CHINESE!

By e42180 |

Basically found this place by chance while walking around Chinatown. Just a hole in the wall, but man the food was authentic and excellent. Definitely would love to go back next time.

great Shanghainese in NY

By FiveStarDiner |

This has been a Chinatown institution for decades under an assortment of different names. Indeed, our prominent local chefs go here for new dish ideas! Highly recommended. Crowded but.

Really Good Chinese Food!

By aherpin |

Overall, the food was very, very good! We had 5 people in our group. The service was ultra fast and pleasant. The meat dumplings were superb(forgot the real name). The crispy duck was juicy and excellent. The orange chicken, sesame chicken was flavorful. The beef and brocolli was excellent as well. The only dish that wasn't great was the won ton soup. The tea was really, really good. This is an excellent restuarant choice when visiting Chinatown.

Best soup dumplings

Best Soup Dumplings! Best to know they have a $7 minimum per person if dine-in. Very good. Friendly service and overall a good experience!

This is our go to place in Chinatown

By seanworc |

Deluxe Green Bo, which used to be New Green Bo, is a Chinese restaurant in the heart of Chinatown just below Canal Street off of Bowery. Easy access from the 6 train or a short walk from the 4 and 5 trains. It has a wide range of classic Chinese dishes, but we are very fond of the pork dumplings. This is cheap eats, among the least expensive places to dine out in Manhattan.

By Terence C |

while the food is overall good, their waiters are impatient, always rushing you, their famous steam buns aren't well maintained in the kitchen so the great soup part tends to be leaking every time we order, it's only great when they actually serve it on time and not already "burst"...if you're looking for good Shanghai food, this is it however service is much to be desired.

Would not recommend...

By lawly |

My partner and I had lunch in Green Bo during a trip to NYC in January 2011. Maybe we ordered the wrong items, but the lunch was terrible. We both ordered noodles, which came out burnt. Neither of us are fussy eaters, but neither of us enjoyed or ate much of our meal. Oh, and the toilets are horrible.

Great Choice in ChinaTown

By moonmonkeycrew |

Wow where do you go in ChinaTown as a tourist. We fell into this place while walking around looking for somewhere for dinner. Glad we walked in as the service although slow was personalised and friendly. Food great. Pan fried noodle chicken, fried rice and Chicken n Broccoli. Plenty if for two. Served piping hot and cooked fresh. Delicious 😋

Good value for the money

By stacey n |

We went here mostly because it was right across the street from the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory , which was in our list of places to go. It is very non descript ( which is fairly typical for Chinatown ). We were seated quickly as it was not busy at all . Service was fine -- not overly friendly or helpful but again pretty standard for Chinatown. The serings were huge ! I wouldn't recommend sharing dishes. Only complaint is the bill was difficult to read so not sure it was entirely accurate .

Great Food, simple ambience

One of those hole in the wall places that are a great find. Really loved the Szechuan whole fish. Family style environment. Loud and busy.

The Best Chinese food in NYC if not the Country

By JJLNY4321 |

We eat here on every visit to NYC and this time as every other time the food is spot on. This is a place to eat serious Chinese food. If you are looking for glitz and glamour not going to happen. You may even be seated with other people. This is all part of the experience. Every dish we have had is awesome. The service is quick and friendly. Don't miss this great spot.

Staple of Chinatown

By jacob g |

I love this place. If you are looking for fancy presentation or indulgent staff do not go here. If you are looking for tasty simple Chinese food at a great price this is for you. I moved away from the city and love chinese food and this is where I come back to when visiting home.

One of my secret lovely restaurants

By Tianyi Z |

Since I found this place, it becomes my secret jewel. The steam bun is so nice, so authentic, and so tasty. The best steam bun (xiaolongbao ) in New York better than Joe's Shanghai.

Average Dumplings

By Ifty1987 |

This was on our list of famous places to try during our recent visit to NYC Chinatown. It wasn't busy at the time we went (Saturday morning) and we received our dumplings to go very quickly. I wouldn't say the dumplings were anything special and I wouldn't queue to eat here.

Don't know what the fuss is all about ...

By SMP1967 |

I've chosen to rate this place as 3, average according to TripAdvisor, but really I would rate it 2.5/5. You get a lot to eat but it's really nothing to rave about. Two of the three dumpling dishes we ordered were oversized (the steamed vegetable, and the fried pork). Is this an American thing? I've eaten dumplings in China, and in San Francisco, and they were never this big. Ordinary, filling, but I can't say more than that. By the way, this place is listed in the Lonely Planet guide to NYC but I'm not sure why it's on their list.

Dim sum heaven

By Claudio S |

Our first experience dinning in Chinatown, this place is always jam packed service is very energetic and fast. We wanted to eat Dim Sum since this place had good reviews from a blogger in YouTube. Our expectations were surpassed, the pork soup dumplings were very tasteful and delicious but the pork buns OMG the were to die for. Price is ridiculously cheap for a restaurant in Manhattan. All plates passing by our table seemed delicious also. Overall we were very happy and satisfied with this experience and will be repeated in a near future

Love this chinese food

By Wendy M |

Found this resturant a couple years ago. Great food then and great food today. Stopped in for lunch with a friend and she loved it too. It's on Bayard street in China town, a little off the beaten path, locals fill it up during the lunch hour, that to me says alot.

Great little find & great value!

By Jamie D |

My partner and I visited after reading about the place in the lonely planet NY book. Somewhat ashamedly we probably wouldn’t have visited had we just been strolling through China town and looking for a place to eat, but proof not to judge a restaurant by its exterior. The atmosphere is great and people were queuing to get in when we were there. It’s a small restaurant and the tables are closely packed in (we couldn’t get out without asking at least 2 people to move), the service is good, they don’t go over the top but they also don’t make a huge fuss about you. The food however was amazing and the cost unbelievable. We had 2 lots of starters and 2 mains with drinks for less than $25!

While many of the restaurants in NYC's Chinatown can seem like tourist traps, Nice Green Bo stands out with tasty food and great service. Plates of fried rice range from $5-$7, and are more than enough for a meal. Would definitely recommend.

Great food and enjoyable lunch

By Stevie G |

Checked through a number of recommendations before settling on this restaurant in Chinatown. We loved the dumplings and had both pork and prawn. The place was pretty busy with both Chinese and tourists/natives. I had my partner and twin fourteen year old boys with me. Service was quick and we were joined at a large round table by a woman eating on her own from Perth in Australia who was visiting her son on a long vacation. Tiger beer made the food even better - we found choosing very difficult as so much choice but picked the squid and spring onion dish as well as a beef and broccoli one - both were excellent. Great value for money. Highly recommend and will go back.

A diamond in the middle of Chinatown

By Lisaloy76 |

Randomly came across this restaurant. We got fried rice, white rice, spring rolls and chicken/jalapeño. It was all delicious and enough for our family of 5. Fresh food and fast service. Small in size restaurant but large in flavor and value.

Chinatown chow.

By KenfromFlorida |

This little eatery on Bayard St. is where many local Chinese eat. It's not trendy or fancy. The food is not always 4 stars, but it's not supposed to be. It's just good food at a decent price. There were many tasty dishes. I had moo shu pork with Mandarin pancakes and dim sum. I really enjoyed it. You may like it too.

Enjoyed It!

By tooncat7 |

We went here because our original choice was closed for a private party. It turned out to be a great choice. Good food, fast service, great Chinatown find.

Excellent food and super service!

By Kim A |

I loved this typical Chinatown restaurant. It's no frills, but the food is faultless and the prices very reasonable. The waitress was lovely and actually asked us to rethink our order as we were ordering too much! She was spot on as the portions were very generous. My favourite of the places I ate in NYC.

Fabulous Dumplings!

By Perpetual-Motion1 |

If you were to pass it on the street, you may not give the New Green Bo restaurant a second glance. It looks like the hundreds of other restaurants in Chinatown. However, ignore the facade and the green interior walls, and go on in! The restaurant specializes in Shanghai cuisine and the dumplings are fabulous. Huge portions. Everything we ordered arrived hot and tasted very fresh. Place is small, so expect to have others at your table, and remember, they only take cash!

Very rude staff

By Flazzina |

Place is extremely basic and service is very poor. Staff is very very very rude- definitely not a way to have me back despite average/good food.

Hearty and delicious

Excellent hearty cuisine...one dish is enough Quick Service However, payment in cash or on an app not accessible without a US phone number

Best Soup Dumplings in the City

By GoodFood88 |

Nwe Green Bo is a non-descript Chinese restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. The number one thing to get are the soup dumplings. These little dumplings are full of flavor and the perfect meal for a cool Fall or Spring day. The pork ones are my favorite, but any flavor is good. I also highly recommend the spicy noodles, which are flavorful and plenty. I would order a set of dumplings one at a time, rather than two or three sets at once, as they do not cool well and can become gummy over time. Order them fresh and eat immediately. If you have never had a soup dumpling, there is a trick to how to eat them. Be sure to nibble on it first, suck out the soup, then eat the meaty goodness that is the dumpling. I know some people might be turned off by the setting. It is a hole inthe wall place with limited seating (you may end up sharing a table with others) and there is very little room. Sodas are served in cans and the waitstaff can be short, though never rude. After you are done, head over to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Company across the street for dessert.

THE best pork dumplings and egg drop soup!!!

By syd21300 |

Restaurant has changed names since we last visited NYC, but seems to be same owners, same yummy recipes and same great service. By far the best pork dumplings and egg drop soup I've found anywhere! Their scallion cakes are also delish! Many years ago when visiting Chinatown in NYC, we wanted to eat in the area but didn't have a clue which place would be best. My husband stopped at the police station in Chinatown to ask where they would eat and both officers highly recommended New Green Bo, which is now Nice Green Bo. They weren't wrong and we go back every time we are in NYC!

My favourite chinese restaurant.

By Roadrunner2102 |

My friends took me to this restaurant and can tell you that it is my favourite chinese restaurants. I liked to so much that i came back to New York purposely while returning to europe, to dine in this place. Even though its very small but the food is amazing. would recommend grilled garlic and eggplant dish.

Best Chinese ever!!

By lambert11 |

Popped in here on a whim as we were staying round the corner and we were really glad we did! We ended up coming back the next day! Best Chinese food I've ever had so fresh! Could actually see the staff making the dumplings on the table behind us. Deffo worth a visit if you are in China town

Stress....

By Clara |

Local fast service.... maybe too much... we were still eating that brought us the bill. More than a restaurant it seems the stop of a station for noise .... given the small size The food? Mah...without infamy or praise Price? Non cheap

Legit recommendation by locals

By Christa4of4 |

Scallion pancakes and a tray of pork dim sum was filling for 2 people and a great $15 dinner. Best place in Chinatown from what I’ve heard from several locals. Authentic.

Awful Dim Sum

By Sabena S |

The cold noodles with sesame sauce was over cooked. The spring rolls were meh. Scallion pancakes were stodgy.. The pork and crab dumplings were the only dim sum that the three of us liked. Fried pork dumplings were fried on one side and steamed on the top. We were thoroughly disappointed in the small selection of hot and cold dim sum. The waitress complained at the paltry tip but what did she expect? I wouldn’t return if somebody paid for me.

Great dimsum!!

By Mer21maid |

We just had a small lunch, but it was excellent! We had scallion pancake, cucumber salad, porc & crab dumplings and hot & spicy wontons. We also had two spring rolls - they were boring only tasting of cabbage. Lovely tea. I can certainly recommend this place!

classic Shanghai eats

By Ted C |

As a descendent of the long gone Shanghai restaurant 4-5-6 on Chatham Square, transitioning thru various versions of Green Bo - it continues to offer classic Shanghai (should not to be confused or compared with the mostly Cantonese establishments in the area). Cold appetizers, XLB, pan fried buns, scallion pancakes are very credible. My wife favors the rice cakes over the Shanghai noodles for her carb fix. Pork w/ bean curd skin, shredded pork w/ dry bean curd, shredded beef w/ spicy green peppers, yellow fish w/ seaweed, bean curd puffs w/ squash, lion head are among my favorites. . Not a fancy or trendy spot but reliable & reasonable priced. Need more ?

Cheek by jowl

By kismetalex |

We were escorted at lunch to a table where four people were already eating so be prepared to enjoy that experience. Or not . Being NYC, there were two Austrians and two French to be replaced by three Australians . The service was chop chop quick and food came out like that too. Accurate ! Tea came in a pot for every two people and appetizers came next . We liked the pork/leek dumplings. Hot and sour soup wasn’t the best and the noodle with vegetables had fat, fat noodles. Not much room to wait for a table as every inch of space needed for sitting eating or serving. The shocker was they only take cash which none of us liked since everything else in the city is plastic.

Shanghai Vegetable Pork Wonton Soup, 8 Tiny Dumpling’s Steamed and Hot and Spicy Wontons. Everything delicious. Need to go back and try Tai Chin Chicken, eight Jewel Sticky Rice, Crab & Pork Steamed Tiny Buns, and Fried Tiny buns among other stuff on menu.

I love these places

By Ritchard F |

First let's mention that a trip to Chinatown is a real eye-opener for out-of-town guests. The place is amazing, and like walking through a film. Nice Green Bo is one of those hole-in-the-wall Chinese places that I have always sought out. The place is a little dodgy, but just the right kind of dodgy - you know in an instant that you're going to enjoy a great meal. And that we did. Wonderful plates delivered in what seemed mere moments from ordering, all the food was delicious and interesting. There were so many servers - I don't know how you can afford to run a business with what seemed like a nearly 1 to 1 ratio of staff to diners. Whatever, it worked for me. This place was a great value, delicious food served quickly and for a great price. I would go again in an instant.

One of the best Chinese restaurant I've ever been to. It's perhaps one of the ugliest restaurants in the world, but the food is amazing.

Mediocre but dishonest with the bill. Buyers BEWARE!

By 5expats |

It is your average china town restaurant. I thought the number of decent reviews was not as accurate. The of the atmosphere and food was your typical OK. What put me off this restaurant was their dishonesty with the bill. When I got my bill they over charged me for one of my dishes. When I complained they argued the price was increased. None of the menus had a price increase and the waiter did not say anything at the time when I placed the order. No matter how much I argued they would not change the charge back to what the menu stated. I did not go with high expectations. The room was dark and run down look which in my opinion is typical china town. The restaurant covered their windows with the articles which blocked the natural light. The walls were painted a purple on top the wall paper. If you look close you can see the bumps from the wall paper underneath. The food was o.k. I thought they had dim sum dim sum but it was a small selection of dumplings that where OK but a little greasy. The one positive I would give them is there staff were fine. We had to ask several times for water but they were quick. We visited the restaurant at 3 pm when it was very. The reason I gave the service a 1 on the review below was because the staff over charged us.

Great family value in Chinatown

By frankdaddy |

We have frequent visitors of Chinese restaurants in Chinatown for years. We came across this restaurant about 5 years ago and have made this a family tradition for Chinese food. Great appetizers like shrimp toast, hot and sour soup are fabulous. We ordered the hot buns which are fabulous. Then the Szechuan beef, double sautéed pork, Lo mein, Singapore noodles. They actually made a dish not on the menu which was chicken and eggplant. All the dishes were awesome. We had 6 people $100.00 plus tip. Great food and fun place. Not fancy but great for a family. Get there early because there aren't many tables

A must visit

By Alexander G |

I think this is some of the best Dim Sum in China Town. I also like that it is off the beaten track. In terms of ordering I would recommend the pork soup dumplings, fried pork dumplings, pork buns and scalion pancakes.

Go for the food - eat fast - no one comes here for the atmosphere

By NYMetroMom |

the food is amazing. Everything we got was superb and I'm still dreaming of the scallion pancakes and tiny buns (dim sum). We had come from the 9/11 museum and had hoped to walk around Chinatown shopping but it was cold & pouring rain outside. We ducked in here on recommendation of others and it was the best part of the day. My daughter's college boyfriend was with us from the south - so we were under pressure to show him what Chinatown food and the experience was really like. The place was packed so we were seated at a large round table and before we were done an elderly Asian couple was seated with us (although they spoke very little english so we only smiled at eachother). We ordered crab & pork tiny buns, fried dumplings, and scallion pancakes as appetizers. They vanished. I looked up to get another slice of the scallion pancakes and they were gone. They were really light and crisp. (True Chinese cooking at a high heat.) The dumplings and tiny buns are handmade here on premises - thin skinned and jsut right. As main courses we got house special lomein, sesame beef and chicken with jalapenos. The lomein was fine - but the beef was outstanding - super crisp and tasty and the chicken with jalepenos was equally as amazing. We did impress our out of town visitor who commented that it was the best Chinese food he's ever had. The atmosphere is typical of Chinatown eateries - crowded, rushed and impatient customer service - but you go for the food.

Best Chinese Place

By Scott/Cynthia |

This place may seem like another cramped Chinese place with an oscillating fan keeping the place cool, and that is the only noise you hear, but it is not that. The Sweet and Sour chicken was the best at any Chinese place in the city. The dim sun I heard was alright, and the jellyfish was interesting. I did not have that.

Dumplings !

By Roukinette |

Best dumplings of my all life (vegatables and fried pork) my only regrets, didn't can eat more ! A real taste off chinatown.

Highly recommended

By TheProf1958 |

A great selection of tasty, well cooked food. Good dumplings, chicken with broccoli and crispy duck. Surprisingly cheap too. Basic surroundings, but who cares when food is this good

Introduction to Shanghai Luncheon

By Ray Y |

After a traditional Dim Sum lunch the day before at Jin Fong, we had a very enjoyable lunch at Green Box. The Soup Pork Buns we're excellent as we're the home made Dumplings. The Rice Cakes with beef were just OK with only a little beef and not enough sauce. What makes this place stand out is their Seaweed Batter Fried Fish and their Salt Pepper Pork Chops. The owners we're extremely helpful with recommendations and explanations of the various dishes and how they differ from other styles.

Be prepared to wait...

By peacelilly811 |

But you'll eat great food. A must is any of their dumpling choices. I hope someday they expand to a larger space, but if not, I'll keep going. Been going there over 10 years. U dont go there for the decor. Its noisy too, ut again the food is really good.

Comfort food - it is what it is

By walabh |

This restaurant seems to be getting an increasingly bad wrap in recent years. Perhaps this is, at least in part, due to the gap between expectations and reality that has been created by changes in the name over the decade.....new; nice; and now deluxe. Not sure why the owners of this establishment don't embrace a truism, and call it Tasty Green Bo. Coz that's what it is....tasty, fresh and affordable. I've been coming to this restaurant over the last ten or more years...nothing's changed except the name....and I'll keep coming back.

Top Chinese food in the heart of Chinatown

By HuggieSRL |

Small and crowded restaurant. Food was really good with a full menu of choice. The dim sum and wantons were fabulous. not sure I'm a fan of rice cakes though. All in all well worth a visit but don't expect to linger at your table.

Another year, same level

By GadiB69 |

Another year passed and here we are again in China Town NYC and we are again in Nice green bo, enjoying again their food, but this time we returned two days after, so here is what we had... For me:- Shanghai Vegetable & Pork Wanton Soup- no words are enough to describe Wanton Casserole -no complains too.. Shrimp Pan Fried Noodle- yo Mama! Beef Pan Fried Noodle- same Mama... For my wife:- Chicken Shanghai Lo Mein- tasty to die for.. Sesame Chicken- look at the picture and say if you don't want the same.. And the free green tea keeps coming.. Run and try, before they close...

One of the best Chinese meals

By danbd |

now it called "NIce Green Bo" We arrived to the restaurant by accident, we used to eat at the near by "won ton garden" that happened to be in reconstructions. some how we was drew to this restaurant after looking at others. it seemed to be nice and authentic ,and we were not disappointed. The place itself is simple and decor is not it's strong side but the food is good and the service is efficient. We had wonton soup (you get a bowl enough for two), beef with broccoli (great sauce) fried shrimp dumplings and vegetables lo mein .the food was very good and the portions are big and more than enough for two people. it was one of the best Chinese food that i had in New York , A place I will surly be visiting again

China Town Restaurant with good food, value.

By KansasRamblinman |

stopped for lunch with 6 people on a sunday afternoon. Heard the dumplings were good, and they WERE. we had a couple of orders for an appetizer, then we each ordered a different entree so we could share- when the food came we thought there was no way we could eat that much, but somehow we made it happen! The eggplant was great, we had a couple of shrimp dishes, the fried rice very nice. Beers were super cheap and cold. Service very no non sense but extremely fast, so who cares? Decor is not what brings you here, but the food and prices should make you want to come back. Rest room very clean (usually a good way to tell whats going on in the kitchen) One thing to mention, the sign in front actually says " Nice Green Bo Restaruant" not New. It looks like they stuck the "Nice" over the original sign. Same address as listed. I didnt see a fork in the place, so know your way around some chop sticks.

World Famous Dumplings Were Fabulous

By Ittibits |

We completely enjoyed our visit to New Green Bo, which has changed it's name on the front to Nice Green Bo. The food was great. The restaurant is cramped, but the food made up for it. We ordered the steamed dumplings. They were very good. The other favorite that we ordered was the General Tao's Chicken. It was the best we've EVER had. We ordered the seafood fun noodles and seafood rice. They were good, but the General Chicken out-shined them both. The only down side was the bathroom. It was clean & tiny, but the trip to the basement bathroom was a bit smelly. Since bathrooms are hard to come by in China Town, it's not even worth complaining about. We will definitely return.

Average Bad Chinese Restaurant

By Nacho C |

I went to this restaurant last Saturday, expecting something great and instead my experience was bad. Bad service, the food was OK (not good, not bad). The waiter didnt know to advice any special of the day/of the restaurant. So I would never recommend this restaurant.

Ok food - dodgy restroom

By syren1 |

Visited with 3 friends as recommended in guide book. Food was delicious but would advise you don't visit the restroom unless absolutely desperate!

Great food, reasonable price

By Familien K |

Great, authentic chinese food. The service was a "funny" experience - leading one to think of Fawlty Towers. Nevertheless we got the help we needed in an indeed very busy restaurant.

My go-to hole in the wall for dumplings in NYC

By Amy S |

I have always hated dumplings/pot stickers. Seriously–hated! Until I went to Nice Green Bo, which was recommended to me by a native NYer as a great hole in the wall place for Chinese. He knew I was having a bunch of out of town guests and would be paying for a group of 12. I've never been a big fan of Chinatown, but thought I'd give it a shot. (I should note that they are cash only; no credit cards.) If you care about service or high end dining experience, this is not the place for you (soda is even served in a can), but if you care about large portions of good food; give it a shot. While I can't say that their menu items are not hit and miss (the rice and fried noodles are very good), I stand 100 percent behind their dumplings, which converted me from a "hater" to someone who literally craves these fried pot stickers. When living there, I took all out of town guests (or told them to go there). Now living in Texas, I do not visit NYC without making a trip to Nice Green Bo to get my fix. I actually even have fun in the neighboring area now and also make sure to stop in the great tea shop right down the road to mix my own tea to bring home.

Fantastic authentic food experience with unforgettable sause

By Tymur Y |

Quite a hidden gem for those who value high quality Asian food with location in the heart of Chinatown in NY. Was welcomed with quick sitting where Chinese tea was given as a compliment. Really nice and polite service. And of course key - the food, brilliant especially unforgettable hot and spicy shredded beef, just must try perfect beef with vegetables preferred to be served with white rice and signature sause that can not be explained. Great atmosphere.

A tiny bit overrated

By NoneNamedYet |

Lines out the door, people on waiting list, you sit at tables with strangers. The place is tiny, the decor gets a zero, and the staff is, for the most part surly and tired and angry and pissed off and speaks maybe three words of English. They're yelling at each other in Chinese, and yelling at the customers, and once you're done eating "Out!" Still, people love it here. Very large population of non-Asians here. I asked some if it's worth the wait "Oh yes!" Do I think it's worth the wait? No. Was it good? Yes. Was it that , that, that good? No. Was it decent? Yes. Was it really great Chinese food worth eating in a dive and being treated poorly by staff for? NO. It's an experience, though. If you're up for that-- you'll get a kick out of it.

My favorite Chinatown hole-in-the-wall

By AdventurousTraveler6 |

This hidden treasure offers fantastic Chinese food at extremely affordable prices. You might think it lacks in atmosphere - a somewhat dingy, cramped interior - but the food is consistently fabulous, and the menu incredibly extensive. Portions are characteristically huge, so you will likely bloat yourself trying to finish an entree, let alone appetizers or dessert. The crispy duck, crispy whole fish, and shrimp/rice cake dishes were all extremely tasty. I have been back to this restaurant twice now (even though it's a bit challenging to find) like a salmon returning to the source. Bring your cash, because they don't take credit cards.

Nice, quiet place in Chinatown

By Antti Väisänen |

A very nice place on Bayard Street! The lunch option for 10 $ (soup, entree with rice which was chicken w/ broccoli) was cheap although a tad too small for a 6 ft 8 inch guy such as myself, but the chicken lo mein I had had as takeaway a couple of days was a generous portion and well prepared. Quick and yet friendly service, quite a few tables inside & clear menus. Check it out if you're looking for takeaway or an affordable sit-down lunch.

Great little find!

By Natalie R |

As we were walking round China Town we stumbled across this place, the only busy place we could find (we always take this as a positive sign). The restaurant didn't look much frlm outside and wasn't amazingly decorated etc but Wow the food was out of this world! Huge portions, amazing value, great flavour and lovely staff. My husband says these were the best dumplings he's ever eaten!

Nice little surpise in Chinatown. Good solid food. But not special.

Also had a spicy pork noodle absolutely delicious will be hard to eat locally when return home. Flavor was on point cools hot fresh and wasn’t raped when bill came.

Avoid, except for food quality !

By Suchanya2013 |

Food is excellent ! Everything else is horrible .... atmosphere, cleanliness, noise and (rude) behavior of staff. They expect 20% tip and dont deserve more than 10 Dont go there !

Tasty!

By sara |

Tasty dumplings, nice staff- taught us how to eat the dumplings in the right way and the prices are good

Very Surprised

By Brian Smith |

I was a little nervous going in but the food was excellent! The rice was the best fried rice I've ever eaten. Lot of food for the money.

Now deluxe green bo

By Rob7142 |

Always a good pick in Chinatown. Yet another name change, but I think that as more economics than food issues. Noodles and rice cake dishes were great and a good value. Soup dumplings weren't as good as I remember, maybe just an off day? Worth a try across from the ice cream factory.

Best Chinese in NYC - Perhaps the World

Yellowfish in Dry Seaweed Scallion Pancakes Yellow Fish and Sea Cucumber Potage Soup Dumplings =Best Chinese Meal You Will Ever Have. Anywhere. Point Blank.

Unfriendly fastfood

By lussienka |

Our friends told us about this restaurant as a great place for dumplings. They were right. The dumplings were delicious, and our ordered dishes landed promptly on our table. The food was certainly a good value for money. However, I don’t think I have ever experienced such a hostile staff. Having paid the bill and service, we were summarily accused of leaving an insufficient tip – when did 20% become standard? We left 15%, which was, in fact, too much. It must also be said that the place looks a bit dirty and the ceilings probably experienced some water leakage in the past. I would only come back for take-away, to save myself from the unfriendly looks of waiters and the weird pressure in the air to eat my food as soon as possible and get out quickly as I can and of course to leave more than generous tip.

Hidden Gem!

By misopiso88 |

We were visiting Chinatown for a couple weeks and must have gone to Deluxe Green Bo three times during our stay. Delicious soup dumplings and excellent prices. Highly recommend!

Awesome pork dumplings!

By Marisol L |

I was visiting NYC, and Green Bo was at the top of our places to eat. We ordered the pork dumplings (recommended by our server as a house specialty), wonton soup, shrimp fried rice, and chicken/broccoli. Wow!! The dumplings, and friend rice were out of this world! I live in South Florida and we don't have Chinese food like that down here.

PHENOMENAL!!!!!

By WHISKEYTIM |

This place ROCKS!!! Read about it in Mike Colameco's NY Food Book. Then called New Green Bo. Maybe just a name change but all he said about it is right on. TERRIFIC dumplings....just wonderful. Chewy thick pockets with very tasteful fillings. We had both pork and vegetarian. We also had an order of the soup dumplings...pork. What outstanding food!!! Very great service, quick....polite...answered questions. And....can you believe this....8 dumplings for $4.25!!!!! Seriously we both got STUFFED for about $12.00 TOTAL!!!!!!! And I am a big eater. I highly recommend this place. Noodle workers right in front...and it is really in Chinatown so tourist folks get real experience. We try to hit NYC 6-8 times a year. Definitely will go here again!!!!!!!! It was outstanding in summer....can't imagine how wonderful this tastes on a cold winter day=)!!!!!!

Soup dumplings

By Timothy M |

I went based off a YouTube video. It is a great hole in the wall restaurant. Three had soup, dumplings, and spring rolls. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive, and the dumplings were amazing I would definitely recommend this to anybody.

great food. CHEAP!

great food. CHEAP!

Cheap eats

By dmshultz |

Very good food at an amazingly low price. 6 of us had appetizers, full dinners and drinks for under $100. In NYC, seemed impossible. No ambience to comment upon, very small and the restroom was not nice. But, we enjoyed the food, and had left overs. Authentic Chinatown experience.

You must tip?

By dreindeer |

The meal was enjoyable, but I did not like the curry beef I ordered. I ate it anyway since I was starving . The other dishes were fine. We thought the service fee was included, since there was an additional 5 dollars in the price. We were told that it was the tax and after the waitress called over another member of the staff, they confronted us and said that we must tip an additional 15%. To my understanding tipping is optional and the staff does not order you to tip. I found the waitress lady very rude. It ruined an otherwise pleasant dining experience. Not a smart move.

Our go to Chinese restaurant

By cookingbarbie85 |

This is my husband and Is go to Chinese restaurant. We usually get the garlic eggplant(always perfectly cooked with the right amout of spiciness), we roated between soup dumplings (usually in winter) and the vegetable lo mein ( when its warmer out), and then something else. Moshu is a great choice and I love that the veggies arent mushy. If we go with more than just ourselves we get a Peking duck($35). Hands down the best thing on the menu! I dont really get why people complain about the service. Service is always quick and get the job done. While they arent overly friendly(I call those tgifriday waiters) they have never been rude. If we don't get the duck our meal is usually under $30 wich is a bargain in this city! We take out of towners here and all of them ask to go back their next visit. We also love going here after the new years day parade. You might be put at a big round table with other folks and thats always fine with us. Weve had that several times and we always get to check out what other people order(and usually order it the next time we come). We love that this is our go to Chinese restaurant. For the same price as ordering delivery at home we can go out and enjoy Chinatown and have a great meal.

Soup Dumplings!

By Scott M |

Friendly attentive staff, very tasty soup dumplings, entrees very good. Enjoyed the sesame chicken, mixed meat lo mein, and dumplings. Reasonably priced, but cash only.

Go for Crispy Pancakes!

By Previa1994 |

Dropped by here for a mini-meal on our walk in Chinatown. Were surprised at how crispy the onion pancake was. The appetizer was ample enough to share with my wife. We were looking for soup dumplings, but they do not have them on the menu. So we went with their regular dumplings (pork). The dumplings were large, soft and almost as juicy as soup dumplings. Good enough for a regular meal. The prices were reasonable. Nice of them to offer complimentary tea.

Excellent food.. the best.

By karkulture |

Loved every bite of the food, stunning and great prices too.. Manager is hardly Mr. Happy though and no credit cards so pay cash plus big tip or manager goes out of his way to make you look an idiot when paying.. shame because the food is beautiful..

Dumpling dinner

It was a pleasant experience. It's a modest yet inexpensive restaurant. Dim sum was amazing and homemade

Good, Cheap, Authentic

I don't really like traditional/authentic Dim Sum, but this restaurant was great. Dumplings were great. Looking forward to going again!

Best Authentic Chinese

By Victoria L |

Don't let the newspapers pasted to the front windows fool you. Come on in and have some of the best food in Chinatown. Small, typical dining room, but outstanding dumplings, scallion pancakes that we get EVERY time we are in NYC. Love this place!

Cheap and yummy. very quick service.

Amazing authentic food

By Alex G |

Amazing authentic Chinese food. We came to NYC on Sunday (15th sept) and our first goal was to find an amazing Chinese, and this place was it. We had Shanghai noodles, sweet n sour chicken, veggie and pork dumplings- amazing flavour and tasted amazing. We even took some back to our hotel as we couldn't eat it all. Small interior, however the atmosphere and decor suited it very well. Lovely place and great food and this made for a great start to our trip this week! Thank you so much Alex

A tradition

By chessie333 |

We have been eating here for years, and the food is still mostly the same. The dumplings and scallion pancakes are always a favorite. Ditto for the sesame noodles.

Delicious and inexpensive

By SJSNewEngland |

The scallion pancakes are excellent. Other food is very good-- large portions and crazy low prices! It's a busy, bustling place.

A Big Zero

By SFG73 |

My girlfriend and I are adventurous eaters and decided to give this place a try judging from how busy it was. We ordered the pork shoulder in brown sauce, crispy duck, and rice cakes with pork. The food came out in about 5 minutes. First the pork shoulder, it was a luke warm very fatty gelotinous lump of meat bathed in a brown gravy-like sauce. Second the crispy duck, this was supposed to be half of a duck but somehow had two legs. It was cold, old and tasted like it had been cured in salt for a year. Last but far from least was the rice cakes with pork. I will eat anything but was not willing to give this one a go. But my poor girlfriend went for it and was immediatly repulsed, she had to spit it out. One, two, three strikes can we please have the check? We left the ammount specified on the bill with no tip. It was the second or third time in my life I had to do so. The waitress grabbed and counted the money before we were able to stand and informed us of the fact that "the tip was not included" and we told her we understood. She became angry, stormed up to a male worker at the front where I was forced to confront both of them with the fact that their food was inedible. All in all, not a bad night in Chinatown but the worst dining experience of my life!

Tasty, not too salty and cheap

By adventix |

First thing - be aware that they receive only cash. Second - note that they have only 1 small and old bathroom... Beside that the food is really good. We especially like the dumplings and the eggplant and broccoli dishs

Cheap and Tasty

By PMR61 |

Stayed at a hotel around the corner in Chinatown. Found this restaurant on Trip Advisor and we weren't disappointed, in fact went there twice in 4 days! Food very cheap but of very high quality. First visit had a table for two, second visit on a Saturday had to share but had a local family from Brooklyn who are regulars there. Highly recommended.

No longer "New" or "Nice" or "Deluxe"

By Linda K |

The restaurant continues to change names, but with the most recent change to "Deluxe" Green Bo the food has really become close to inedible. The soup dumplings ($4.95) were a glob of thick wrapper with a grainy, tasteless pork ball surrounded by flavorless broth. The cold sesame noodle ($4.95) tasted nothing of tahini -- only peanut butter -- and the cucumber shreds topping was limp and acrid in its vinegar dressing. The spicy meat noodle ($5.95) has no spice, no meat and no taste. The ONLY improvement was the bathroom had been cleaned, and the cardboard on the floor in front of the bathroom absorbing odd liquids was removed.

GOOD FOOD FOR SMART CHINA TOWN DAY!

By loveoffun |

take a few hours of your trip to enjoy china town. get off any train to canal st and walk around and explore on your own. shop a little and when it is time to eat GREAT , well priced, big portioned authentic feeling Chinese food visit this non pretentious, friendly to all visitors authentic but altered for 'american' taste feast. in case you like spicy and or order from the Chinese menu you may get a bit more fire on your pallet! start with an order of fried dumpling extra crispy with special sauce for under 5 dollars! DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE IF YOU LIKE FAB FURNITURE AND AMBIANCE AND MUSIC, NOT THESE PRICES!! SO OMIT REVIEWS FROM EATERS WHO DO NOT GET THE AUTHENTIC FEELING! GET SOME HOT AND SOUR SOUP FOR TWO AND ENJOY THE LOVELY BALANCED FLAVOR. we have been there many times and never fails, every time is great. order anything form the menu and have a feast on-a-budget! then walk across street for hand made Chinese ice cream!! http://www.chinatownicecreamfactory.com/ then walk to the local park and enjoy the view!! enjoy new york

Finally an authentic Chinese meal in the US

By Ansh J |

One of the things I was excited about when visiting NY was an authentic Chinese meal, and I got that here. As a vegetarian, the choices were decent - the tofu was excellent and the dumplings were great, all at reasonable prices. Service was a little slow (they kept on saying a few more minutes) but the food was worth waiting for.

It has changed a lot since I've been there last

By Mich7500 |

The food here is no doubt delicious. The restaurant was filled with Asians. They always say to eat where the locals eat! They only take cash, so make sure to have cash. The biggest change since my last visit was that they did not include steamed rice with any entree. If you wanted rice, you must order an entree of fried rice. Kind of ridiculous as rice only costs pennies. They did not have house mustard either, which I would expect from every restaurant in Chinatown. We asked the waitress what came in a certain dish and she said she didn't know. We had to ask her to go to the kitchen and ask them. The food we ate was delicious, but the over all experience was disappointing.

Their soup dumplings are SO good!!!! The place is a total hole in the wall, but they serve very authentic Shanghai cuisine.

Rude waiter

By Karen F |

I had an early dinner with my family recently at this restaurant. Everything was fine up until we paid our bill and prepare to leave. The waiter accused us not leaving efficient tips and said " if you don't have money don't eat in a restaurant". We understand the whole US tipping system, specially my husband and I both working in hotel business for over 10 years. We always tip very well for good service. But 20% for only taking order and brought food to our table is way too much. Not even offered their assistant to help me when we came in with our pushchair and two kids. We will never go back there and certainly not recommend this place to anyone.

Terrible food, surly "service." Go somewhere else.

By Neal |

Terrible food, surly "service." To level set: I lived in Hong Kong for 15 years, speak pretty good Cantonese, reasonable Mandarin and most importantly, I know Chinese food. This place serves the same Americanized slop you can find anywhere. Was I really in the heart of NY Chinatown? This blah excuse for Chinese food was about what I would expect from a Chinese restaurant in Topeka, Kansas. Even worse, the service was surly, just indifferent. There were three of us eating, two of our dishes arrived, we then waited 15 MINUTES for the third person's dish to arrive. The people around us who ordered after got their fod first, and when I asked if they could please bring her dish so we can all start eating, she berated me "this busy time, kitchen very busy!" I asked five or six times and got the same response each time. The "tea" they gave us was horrible, and they were similarly disinterested in giving us another. The topper, though, was when we left, the waiter had the chutzpah to chase me out the door and complain that my tip was not enough! Find another place. Any other place. Heck. go to Topeka before you waste money and taste buds at this greasy spoon.

Great chinese in Chinatown...

By Kevin C |

I went there with 4 of my friends and it was the best...Great service, excellent food, everything was awesome. Get the sizzling shrimp and rice soup...best I have ever had... Everything was just so fresh...I would go to NYC just for New Green Bo!!!!

Good food at reasonable cost.

By Gregg H |

NICE GREEN BO RESTARANT 66 Bayard Street Off of Mott Street, on a side street, we found Nice Green Bo Restaurant - a non descript small tradtional Chinese restaurant. The outside had a number of glowing reviews posted so we decided to try it for lunch. The majority of the customers were Asian so we smiled and thought to ourselves that we were going to have a great meal. We had to share a table with another couple. The food was authenic Southern Chinese cooking. Everything was prepared as we ordered. The portions were very generous. We tried pan fried pork dumplings, steamed shrmp balls, egg drop soup and House Special Lo Mein. The noodles were fresh and a little heavy but delicious. The service is excellent and the cost of the meal was reasonable.

Authentic chinese food and atmosphere

By MiroAndFamily |

Great place to visit when you want good chinese food whilst visiting Chinatown. We met there very friendly locals who recommended us few dishes we wouldnt try otherwise. Soup dumplings are "must have" and there is a great choice of other very good and resonably priced meals.

Well worth a visit

By Sherpa566584 |

After spending an hour looking at reviews I decided on this establishment as it had a large menu & I have a picky 18 year old niece ! Fancy it is not but the food was on point. Delicious. Courteous staff. Busy restaurant we sat outside. Food came quickly. Lovely and hot. Good portion sizes happy to pack food up to take away. The salt and pepper squid was lovely as was the prawn and broccoli. The rice was very tasty as well. If you want a good price quality eat in china town this is definitely it. 🙂

Great dumplings for great price!!

By Angela J |

We loved this place!!! In only 10 days in New York we had lunch here twice!!! The fried pork dumplings, the boiled pork and leek dumplings and the steamed vegetable dumplings were great! Unfortunately, after reading such good reviews about the fried scalion pancakes, they were way too greasy. After seeing the spicy stewed beef soup with rice noodles at the customer on the table next to us, we decided to try it. The stock had a great taste, so good, too bad some parts of the beef was only fat because the meat was tasty, but why did we get big udon noodles? Anyway, this is a great place and cheap as well. We were completely full both times, and paid around 20 dollars. Whenever back in New York, we will definitely stop by here to try some new things on the endless menu!!!

Good food!

By TravelScout56 |

We actually were going to another restaurant, but it was closed for a private party. We ended up here & I'm glad we did. Food was good. Prices were very reasonable. Please note...they are CASH ONLY! None of us saw any signage saying that...good thing we had cash or someone would have been doing dishes!

Green bow is authentic in Chinatown ...

By Dr Dave O |

During our jaunt to Chinatown on vacation our group chose the Green bow for lunch... The food was to everyone's liking. Shrimp in sauce, beef chow fun, and vegetable dumplings were their favorites on the menu. They all felt that the portions were generous and delicious. The value was well received as the bill was only 28 bucks! Inexpensive for NY. As for the ambiance--- no good ..old and dumpy---rushed and crowded. Best for lunch.

Great Shanghai Fried Rice

By ThePackedBag |

I found this place when I was staying in Chinatown and the rice was so good that I even make the trek back once I've moved out to Brooklyn. I can be hard to find good fried rice and this one was tasty when fresh and even stood up to next day re-heating. Worth the effort.

Only Chinese Restaurant I go to

By Va9nessa |

I am not a huge fan of Chinese food but this is the ONLY chinese food restaurant I will ever go to in NYC. I've been to many cities in China and I was comparing the food there to what I have at Nice Green Bo. I love their soup dumplings, beef with broc, string beans, Shanghai noodles, fried rice, whole fish, etc etc. The service is fast, but not always friendly - but who cares?! The food is good, hot, and dumplings are always made in the front fresh! Cash only like most places in chinatown - $45 with tip for 4 people

Noodles, and pancakes, and dumplings, oh my!

By dmaxdmax |

We were distressed to learn that Soup Dumplings were no longer to be had at The Bao but then we found this place and they were terrific! The scallion pancakes weren’t greasy and the sesame noodles were so good we had to order a second round! I won’t go into the setting and service which is, at best, forgettable. We are going back.

Awsome

Don't be put off by the look of the outside. If you want posh decor and fancy service this isn't for you. The food is fabulous and lots of it at a brilliant price. The beef in black bean sauce is a must as is the chicken and sweet corn soup. My advice if there are more of you get dishes to share and try as many as possible.

Had a fast lunch, tough lo mein noodles were thicker than usual, they were ok. We also had some steamed pork dumplings, raw, uncooked. I give them an extra encouraging star because as we tasted only two dishes.

Favorite restaurant in Chinatown

This is my favorite restaurant in Chinatown and I live in New York. Everything is good. I really like the chicken dishes.

Great Steamed Vegetable Dumplings

By Kathlyne |

I got to this joint whenever I'm in NYC. The place is small--you might have to sit at a table with strangers, but the food and prices are great. I've never had anything bad there. I highly recommend the steamed vegetable dumplings. Hot tea comes with the meal and the service is very fast.

Amazing food - take cash though

wow wonderful fresh food cooked to order! Very fast food with a wonderful selection. Tight seating arrangements and if it is just 2 of you expect to be seated on tables with other people. It just adds to the character and experience in this place! We got friendly with the locals at our table and they recommended some wonderful dishes. Great flavors. Shanghai noodles were good as well as the dumplings. Fantastic experience.

love their crispy eel (appetizer). it is on the sweeter side but i like it!

What is so deluxe with this restaurant?

By LaPalmaGuy |

There is a line at the door. That is usually a good sign of good Chinese food place. Yes, the food is very delicious, no question about it. The xiao-long-tang-bao is among the best I've ever had. The skin was paper-thin and tender yet strong enough that they do not break before you bite into them. Plenty of juice in it. Knitted Bean curd with pork in brown sauce very flavorful. Price is reasonable and service was quite prompt. Ok, too prompt may be. IMHO, eating out is not only about food. I feel being crammed to too small of a space, almost rubbing elbows with guests on the next table and those behind me. The moment food is consumed, the plates were removed and the bill presented. This restaurant may be a good place to eat but not to enjoy food. My New Jersey friend said they will come back. I will have to think about it.

where else can you eat half a duck for 10 bucks?! very cheap treat... recommended, if you don't mind the bad waiter...

The true Chinese food

I had lunch and I'm really satisfied. The place doesn't look nice from the outside but here you can eat real Chinese food at very low prices. You absolutely have to try the fried pork dumplings and noodles (chow fan with chicken)

Hidden Gem

A friend recommended this restaurant and we were glad that we took his advice. The food was outstanding. We dined on scallion pancakes, Beef and Broccoli, Veg. fried rice and assorted other dishes too numerous to mention. All were served hot and delicious. Service was fast and right on the money. You can't go wrong with this rest.

Great food at a reasonable cost!

If you want posh surroundings then do not eat here. The exterior and interior are basic but the menu is extensive, the food is very good & portion sizes are large!

Don't leave New York without having Soup Dumplings here.

By Jakub3000 |

Their soup dumplings are made to order behind the counter and are work trekking to New York for. It's not the cleanest or spacious place but for a cheap diner with great food it's the place to go.

delicious big portions with reasonable prices...poor service..

Authentic Chinese Food

By Flipper13 |

I have eaten here several times before and wanted my hubby to have a meal here. They have the best chinese food ever. We went right when they opened. They brought hot tea when we were seated. We ordered two spring rolls, steamed pork dumplings and general tso chicken, white meat. Everything was delicious. It was hot and fresh. When the dumplings were served hubby said he would only eat two. Well, he ate all but one, I was able to eat one. They are super light, hot and very good. He said it was the best he has ever eaten. My meal was good as usual. I love coming here to eat. In the heart of Chinatown and the locals are forever coming in and out to get orders to go. The service was very good. The prices are very reasonable. Portions are huge. Each meal is shareable if need be.

Good and officiant

New Green Bo is always one of our stations when we are in town, its not breathtaking Chinese restaurant, but the food is always good and tasty and the owner understand "White-es" like us and helps us to choose from the menu. I orders Wanton soup (No Lulu!-noodles)-it was good. For main course we ordered Eggplant with garlic sauce (spicy) and Chicken shanghai lo mein both very good. Free refill tea and a good atmosphere. We enjoyed. (P.S. we noticed that locals don't use to leave tips!! ( It's a custom?! ) .

GREAT FOOD AND GREAT PRICING

By Travellingelmundo |

We just came back from our vacation in New York and had the opportunity to have dinner at this restaurant. It's a great choice and love the mom and pop shop feel. We came on a weekday as on the weekend, there is a line up. The service was good and fast and the food was excellent. Highly recommend!

Not so sure

By Hannah L |

This place is listed in the guidebooks and seems to have decent reviews on TA. That said, all three of us felt ill immediately after leaving and have missed two complete days on our NYC trip as a result. We ate purely veggie, but i'm not sure how excellent the food prep was. My advice - steer clear. The staff are average at best, but thats not even my main gripe unfortunately. Ruined our trip.
