Quick dinner

By Helen K |

Dig Inn, like lots of other new style takeaways, offers a base, 2 veg and meat choices. The chicken breast is very good. Would recommend the carrots and broccoli. The dressing of Aioli was rich but lovely. For a take out dinner this is balanced and very reasonably priced.

Savory and rich food served fast until late

I'm reminded of that classic Seinfeld episode when Jerry's college friend Seth corrects Jerry when he refers to Kenny Rogers Roasters as fast food: "Not fast food--good food served quickly." I'm in NYC frequently and I always try to catch at least one lunch or dinner at one of the Dig Inn locations, but this one on 8th is consistently good. It's a lot better than KRR, but it lives up to Seth's mantra very well. The usual routine is to pick a base (rice, farro, or greens--all good) and then either two sides and a protein or three sides. There are great choices for vegetarians and a rotating set of seasonal salads and sides from the adventurous (spicy cucumber salad) to the pretty typical (roast broccoli or cauliflower), but most are excellent and none have every been truly disappointing in my experience. Despite long lines at times, the staff moves everyone along quickly and gets everyone through during rush times. They are open late and in the last hour of the day, you may have to wait a bit for the next batch of your top choice side to be completed, but there's always options ready. I've found the staff here to be friendly--especially when not under the lunch rush crush--and generous with the portions. There's a bit of seating available, but this primarily a to-go outlet. I highly recommend this when you are looking for a quick meal with some variety and maybe a genuine surprise taste or two.

Delicious wholesome meals

This place is an absolute gem. Delicious, healthy balanced meals made from scratch. The lunch queues are long but move along fast. Efficient and helpful staff.

Fresh, healthy, and flavorful

Although they have chicken as an option, this is a great restaurant for vegetarians and vegans, and for people who want to eat healthy and flavorful food, and quickly. It's like a Create-A-Meal, farm-to-container, fast food place. You order at the counter, and either take it with you, or eat it there; there's no table service. You start with choosing a "base" (although the foods are kept separately in the container), from a selection of 4 things (i.e. brown rice with parsely, farro with summer veggies and mint, field greens, and 1 other option, but I don't remember what it was.). I chose the farro, but didn't care for the mint in it. My daughter chose the brown rice, which she didn't really care for--but we prefer white rice. Then you choose 2 foods from a larger variety, to add to this, such as broccoli w/ lemon, cauliflower with parmesan and garlic, mac & cheese, tomatoes, marinated cucumbers, etc. I chose the broccoli, which was delicious, and the cauliflower which I found a little too garlicky. My daughter chose the mac & cheese, which I found just okay. She also chose the cauliflower, which she really enjoyed. You then choose an entree. I chose grilled salmon, which was excellent (A lot of the veggies are also grilled.)! Other choices included chicken, and grilled tofu. You can also get a side of a dressing. I took a garlic tofu thing, but didn't need to use it, and had 1/2 an avocado added to the dish, b/c I love avocado! The portions are ample, the workers are very nice, and there seemed to be enough seating, especially during a quiet time. The place did not look clean, though, and the ambiance is not warm and welcoming. My daughter had previously come to a Dig Inn with a friend, and brought me back because of her first experience. She said that her first experience was better.

Best food and staff ever!

My sister and I were visiting NY from Canada on the long weekend and were surprised to find this yummy, healthy restaurant in the heart of Times Square. Not only is the price beyond reasonable for what you get, the food is so healthy and tasty and filling that we felt better when we left. The staff were friendly and clearly committed to providing organic, healthy options for people to eat. Love that it is all locally grown in NY. We wish we had this type of restaurant in Canada! Shout out to the manager - awesome woman! Keep this concept going!!

Good food

This is a favourite stop whenever I'm in NYC. I'm almost tempted to try to replicate it back home in London but I can't book an egg!

Good food, poor service

Good, healthy and tasty option among the many restaurants in the area. The food was very tasty. The service at the place was poor and not kind

Healthy and reasonable

We ate at the Dig inn across from the Hampton Inn in Times Square. It was good for a quick meal. Healthy, quick and reasonably priced food. Cant go wrong ! It is right next to Gotham Pizza.

Thank goodness for Dig Inn

My picky daughter LOVED Dig Inn while we were in NYC. The staff was great, the food was amazing and healthy! Recommend to anyone going to NYC for a quick, inexpensive meal. We ended up taking dinner back to our hotel so we could enjoy the view while eating. Both of our meals were about $25, amazing for NY!

Inexpensive but nothing that special

Although they offer a reasonable selection at reasonable prices, what I selected was nothing out of the ordinary and my meat loaf choice was a little too spicy for my taste. There is not of lot of seating if you choose to eat there so I suppose that for take out, it would be a fair place to choose.

Healthy and GOOD

Walking around 8th and 51st I kept on seeing people walking around with a to-go bowl, so many that I finally asked someone where they got the bowl, and Dig Inn was the answer. So off I went about one block to find the location on 8th ave. No knowing what to expect I was surprise to see the long line of people waiting to get their order, maybe I should not have been after seeing all the to-go orders walking around the area. I think Dig Inn is best explained as a Chipotle type place for organic farm to table food. Pick a base, protein and sides and have an amazing delicious bowl make for you as quick as can be, yes the long line moved very fast. I ordered a bowl with brown rice as the base, snap peas and roasted veggies as the sides and roasted chicken breast as the main, no add-ons. It tasted as was as good as it looked!! Fresh, flavorful, well constructed. After eating this bowl I understood all the people I saw walking with the bowls back to work. Staff was very nice and explained to the newbie(me) about ordering and answered questions I had about my selections. I was happy to see that Dig Inn is opening a new locations in the upper west side, close to where I stay while visiting NYC so the next time I am in town for sure that is where I will be going to a great lunch.

Great for a healthy lunch

Really interesting concept. Good for you food. Limited assortment. Choose your base (rice, farro, greens), sides, protein. Sort of a healthy In-Out. Really enjoyed the brussel sprouts.
