Best Kaisekei in NYC

By Donatella B |

I have been coming to EN Brasseries for the past 20 years. I have never been disappointed. Sometimes the service can be improved, but my last time the service was impeccable! Great for kaiseki with pairing sakes.

Given the high prices the quality of the food is only ok

By fritzcat2017 |

I should have gone for Sake (for which the place seems to be famous). Instead I had an overpriced lunch of soso quality at a very uncomfortable table that was too low for eating.

Better version of a Japanese Restaurant

By Jeff I |

Wasn’t sure what we were getting here but came highly recommended. So happy we went. Not your normal Japanese restaurant, but a lot better. Many choices depending on what you want. Rolls are great, black cod was to die for, fatty tuna was very good. Very celiac friendly also with lots of gluten free options. Largest Japanese whiskey selection I have seen to date. Try it.

Worst service I’ve ever experienced

By James S |

We walked out after 45 minutes. We had to beg someone to wait on us. We placed a drink order. Drinks never came. Finally a very distracted and unhelpful waitress took our food order. That never came either. This is the first time I’ve ever walked out of a restaurant after ordering.

Looks great from the outside....

By Arne |

Went there with a group of ten to celebrate my sisters birthday. We got there a little early so our table was not ready yet, which does not matter as they do have a nice bar where you can go for a couple of drinks. Once we got seated things went kind of sideways as all of the sudden manager wanted to see ID in order for us to order drinks (which we couldn‘t as he did not accept our German ones; which was also our mistakes for just bringing our regular ID and not our passports, but if 10 people show you the same kind of ID I would assume that they are legit or at least google it and not call them „these do not look like official documents“) This dampened the mood quiet a bit. As for the food the black cod and miso soup are really good, the black angus beef was not as good as expected (very thick and unevenly cut which made it difficult to grill on the hot stone). The sushi & sashimi can also be ordered as well as the seaweed salad, but are not exceptional. The service was mediocre (had to refill our glasses ourselves, reaching over ones plates while you were still eating)Overall an ok restaurant, which is a bit overhyped. If you are going out you are looking for a good atmosphere, food and service. I cannot say that either of the three was exceptional.

Unusual and great food

By GD11_11 |

Walked in off the street. We ordered a selection of dishes to share and enjoyed each one. Unusual and great food. Service very good

I Wasn’t Impressed

By Max D |

The ambiance is impressive but not so much the food. The high ceilings make this place a nice place to hang out so I may come back for a la carte because Kaiseki menu was not memorable. I would observe seat location and surrounding because they gave me the worst the seat behind server station so all I heard was servers yapping all night.

Dinner

By LeoLeoGG |

Superb restaurant with a deep sake and Japanese Whiskey bar. The food is a deeply original menus, the quality is delicious and fresh. The service is truly great. I cant Recommend it enough

Amazing

By LeoLeoGG |

This is definitely a classic restaurant. The food is miraculous and the staff is always wonderful. I think it’s one of the places that i deeply love and where they always take care of me and my pals. The uni is inspired and has a wonderful space that makes you feel both intimate and spacious. I simply love it.

Village gem with creative cuisine

By DosDragones |

Generally like our Japanese food very traditional. However, the kaiseki at En Brasserie was creative and delicious. Best homemade tofu we have had in years. Good spot for sharing a meal with friends. Friendly, knowledgeable bartenders. Extensive shochu selection.

Delicious Japanese Meals

By YacchanAmarone |

I had dinner with my wife. The qualities of Japanese meals were higher than expectation. Suchi was not outstanding and rather not good performance for its cost though (Maybe, rice parts were large and not so tasty). Anyway, EN in New York was different (in higher quality) than EN in Japan, normal Izakaya which Japanese are familiar with. On the other hand, the prices were actually high for Japanese who are used to eating nice Japanese cuisine. It is not easy to repeat visiting here for my budget as I can do for actual Izakaya in Japan… By the way, Japanese famous musician, Ryuichi Sakamoto, came in the restaurant when we were there. This restaurant can be a place where we can see Japanese celebrities?

One of the best

I had dinner here with my godson and his girlfriend! The food is soooo good! Don’t miss the Uni Don! One of the best! Love this place!

Best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to

Unique and authentic Japanese place. Feels like being in Tokyo Have to order th sake flights Apps are great but very small as expected Noodles ar great and the dessert also fantastic Very cool ny place for tourists

Great Japanese

By Dhaone |

Nice atmosphere and great food. Good service. Various fixed menu options. We had the black cod which was very good. Be prepared to pay.

Overpriced and not that great

By ehmtl |

Maybe I'm spoiled by the number of great restaurants when I visit New York City. I'm not afraid of paying a lot of money for a good meal. However this is a lot of money for a average meal. The tofu was the best tofu I ever had. But it was still tofu. Completely tasteless but consistency more like cheese. Still forgettable. Wagu beef was ok but could have been better accompanied. Fish and rolls were like any mid priced restaurant. Not a bad meal just not great.

Simply Outstanding!

By Bryan N |

When I come here I normally order the Soyo Kaze set menu which is simply delicious! Every aspect of the meal is amazing and certainly worth every penny. If you don't order from the set menus, the sashimi is also expertly prepared and the Miso Black Cod dish is also one of my favorites. The service here is very precise and polite, definitely one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in NYC!

One of NYC's very best....

By travelingmannyc |

Outstanding food, atmosphere, design and service. This place hits all the high notes. Located in one of the city's most understated and very best neighborhoods - you should seek this place out for a genuine nyc experience. Big place - but still the wonderful service makes it feel small. My gal and I sat at the sushi bar (or just the bar - not really a sushi joint per se - they serve all manner of Japanese cooking). Our waiter was just outstanding. Ordered some corn tempura (seasonal dish), a lovely piece of salmon belly sushi and a shabu shabu - a hot stone served alongside raw thinly sliced beef that you cook yerself. Drank some killer Sake and a Japanese malt whisley (make mine neat). One of the best meals I've had in a while. Expensive, so be prepared, but worth it. Eat that hi-end Japanese Y'all.... Tourist Trap in the West Village

By BorkdlynNYC |

You might think you were in times square for a moment in a place like this. The cheap decor only highlights the cheap service and low quality food. I paid almost $40 for a fish that was obviously frozen for more than a day (the smell alone, let alone rigid texture, made things pretty obvious). Most of the flavors were mediocre at best. The mushroom mousse was actually pretty awesome, thats about the only thing I can reccomend. Bad, overpriced Sake. Bad, overpriced beef. Bad, overpriced everything else. Very inattentive, aloof, and unintelligible waitstaff. The seating is cramped and overcrowded, and youre out of luck if your neighbors happen to order a dish with a hot stone to cook it on - be prepared to spend 2 minutes coughing and choking while they bbq their food a few inches away from you and a pillar of smoke consumes your conversation. The locks on the bathroom were broken and someone insisted on trying to share a toilet with me, to highlight the evening. This place is laughably overpriced. I will never come back here again. Low class rip off!

Tofu is a must!

By Akio A |

The tofu is served every hour, and unless you are alone, you should try both cold and warm tofu! I think it is the best tofu outside Japan!! So if you never liked tofu, and want to have a different experience, try!! Or if you like tofu, then try these!! it melts!!

Great food

By Jetting79 |

We loved the decor, food was wonderful and hit every palette perfectly. We are a wealth of small plates and shared larger dishes. Wine list was decent too. Place is not cheap, but you'll enjoy your money's worth.

Expensive, but fabulous!

By francoisb528 |

Classic Japanese Okasame! Take a menu with the sake pairing - just perfect! Most probably the best Japanese restaurant in New York City.

Amazing food, outstanding service.

By NYChotellier |

Great welcoming experience from the hostess to the waiter. Fresh half dozen oysters, outstanding sushi and the rest follows. Enjoyed my birthday for sure.

Different

By abarasol |

EN Japanese Brasserie is quite different from any restaurant we have encountered Upstate. Great sake selection and priced accordingly. Appetizers and entrees were difficult to choose... we went with another couple who have been there many times. This made choices easier. Portions were not large, but shareable and quite tasty.

Excellent food and top notch service!

By Lisa P |

The entire staff was laser focused on providing a great customer experience and delicious food. We ordered a number of different dishes to share at our table and they came out at different times at a perfect pace. The servers were constantly stopping in to provide clean dishes and provide us with water and new cocktails. Can't wait to go back the next time I'm in Soho visiting our customer.

Great dinner but seriously peculiar policy on IDs

By Daniel C |

We celebrated my girl friends birthday with her family there. Food was outstanding, servings quite large and reasonably priced. They however insisted on seeing passports of people over the age of 65 to be served drinks. This was super strange and I cannot get my head around it. We asked for the manager who made it worse and was fully incapable of resolving the situation. Whilst this was an annoyance on a celebratory occasion, it was above all very very odd

What a sad experience!

By Vincent G v |

I have visited the EN Brasserie many times in the past and the food used to be really good. Starting of with a drink at the pleasant bar, however the Edamame beans are served stone-cold without a sprinkle of even Salt. The set menu 'Soya Kaze' a tasting menu starts with a chilled appetizer, The Appetizer is so cold that one cannot taste the dish! What exactly am I eating? I have no idea. And it continues to be this this way. A stone-cold scooped Tofu. I check with the waiter and his reply is; 'The next dish is hot ..' The Cod is tasteless and overcooked. It's a long time ago since Michelin came by I suppose. Or a very long time ago Chef has tasted his own food. What a sad performance. I won't come back.

Great food

By Sarah B |

Every time I visit New York I make sure to visit EN. The food is delicious (especially the pork belly) and the service is smooth. I'd advise you to make a reservation before going as this is a popular restaurant.

Amazing Japanese in Tribeca

By parisbt |

Great Japanese! It is a Japanese canteen, so there is sushi as well as noodles and other great options. We had amazing tofu and uni. The fried chicken was not bad. The starter plates were delicious as well.

very good food and drink. lighting way too dim in the front room!

By hask74 |

My second visit. A menu with lots of inventive japanese dishes as well as classic offerings. Good saké, not cheap. Good service, efficient. LIGHTING IN THE FRONT ROOM WAY TOO DIM! Sorry for the caps but really, no human can read menus in that light. Please, please, fix this!! Otherwise, the fried chicken was just ok, not well seasoned. th hamachi fish collar was not particularly generous or good, and I know this dish well.

Really good food!

By Neena C |

Our second trip to this place, and we enjoyed it even more this time. Took the kids and grandkids for lunch. I really liked the Tonkatsu Sando which consisted of Berkshire Pork Cutlet with red miso sauce mizuna & watercress salad and came with a Japanese style potato salad and yasai chips (delicious). Others in the party ordered Wakame Udon noodles, the SEA special Salmon, Shira Ae, warm tofu and edamame. They were very pleased with their choices. All in all, a most pleasant dining experience thanks to great and speedy service.

Excellent Japanese restaurant with a Western flair

By Alan J |

My son wanted Japanese or his birthday. We had eaten at EN several years ago for a lunch and enjoyed it very much. This time we went for a dinner on a Saturday night. In addition to the ala carte menu they also had 2 tasting menu options. As with most restaurants that have tasting menus we both had to order them. However, we were able to pick which one we wanted so he had one(the more exotic one) and I had the other. They were both very good. The quality of the food is first rate. It was nice to sample course after course. Each course was enough to satisfy while waiting for the next to come. The servers explained the contents of the course as it was served. In some cases such as the hot pot my son had for one of his courses they lit a burner and told him when the fire went out to turn a sand glass timer over and then he could cook the beef. Unique courses such as sea urchin with shaved truffles or a "smoked" sashimi course (smoke was under a dome that contained the fish). Pretty rooms. Elegant but not stuffy so you could go dressed up or casual and still fell comfortable with what you were wearing. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Very good Japanese food albeit not a cheap eat for sure

By Londonsense |

Very nice décor and great menu, both food and content wise. Excellent rendition from the itamae, and expert service (we were lucky enough to have a Japanese waiter) with good advice. Slightly overpriced (especially the sashimi) but I would return if in the area.

Not NYC's best raw fish...but perhaps it's best Japanese restaurant

By Leo M |

The flavor and freshness of the ingredients and the exquisite presentation of the dishes are but part of the story here. The atmosphere is inviting yet elegant and the artful decor and excellent service heighten the dining experience. We've long been great fans of EN and our only complaint has been that the dinner prices are somewhat insidious - the little bites and drinks and entrees and chef's recommendations and desserts all can add up to a rather shocking total. And so it was with great pleasure that I was able to take my wife here for lunch recently. The 'set' lunches offer a tasting of all the luscious bites like the freshly made tofu in addition to a 'main' - I had the sashimi and she had the Black Cod. Everything but the sashimi was extraordinary - and it was very good indeed. We also had the set of ice creams - two of the justifiably renowned black sesame and one of the Earl Grey. And the drinks were as always superb - the Seppun is to die for but the Cucumber and Ichigo Nigori was fabulous as well. In short, we enjoyed an amazing meal for a very reasonable price. I encourage you to do the same.

Lousy service lousy food

By Tommy S |

We went to this restaurant last night, 26/03/2016. We are seasoned world travelers. The experience was one of the worst ever at a japenese restaurant or any restaurant for that matter. We paid the check and left before they finished serving the meal. We took a menu which the waiter recommended. It had several dishes. The apetisers were rubbery, cold, and tasteless. The sashimi was 6 pieces and did not live up to our expectation of freshness. The black cod was cold and not very well prepared - i do not know how you can mess this up- Cod was followed by stone grilled chicken that was not well cooked. The star for blendness and a total waste was the tofu. I do understand that tofu is not fajitas and does not have the sizzle but this was exceptionally bad. The wait between dishes was an eternity. After the tofu we were waiting 25 minutes and finally asked for the check so we can leave. My wife did not eat 95 percent of her food I ate a bit more it was already 9:30 pm ypu know. The manager came and obviously articulate was not one of his attributes. No attempt at a serious apology was made And he said that he will take off the last dish that we did not get served. We told him we were not looking for a handout just his food was not commensorate with his price and decor. We PAID the check and got out. Never to come back into this lousy establishment. A few hours later....i am amazed at how the manager did not make any attempt to apologize. He was more interested in us paying the check and leaving. I do want to emphasize there was no seen here the whole conversation was may be three calm sentences. EN Japenese restaurant is a substandard restaurant. Do no get fooled by the nice setting.there are better choices in the city.

Armchair Travel to Japan

By Jeff B |

One of our favorite spots for traditional, non-sushi-centric Japanese food - but they do have sushi/sashimi. The food is amazing: standouts being the homemade tofu and Age Dashi tofu, the O-Banzai dishes like marinated pork with lotus root, garlic rice with shiso, and the stone chicken with three salts. The ambience lovely. The crowd very diverse.

Very good unusual Japanese, in a local neighbourhood

By Wilton L |

A lovely and cheerful place, v good food, great atmosphere, friendly service, in a nice local neighbourhood, unusual in its decor, large yet warm. Recommend it as a different and unusual experience.

Not worth!

By Josienyc |

The place is awesome! You get a really good impression when you first step in but as soon as you look closer things are not really like that! They said we have to wait 10 minutes (we had two kids with us!) and it ended to be about 35 minutes. Food is extremely expensive and small (really small) portions. My friend who was here to visit us from Korea was also very disappointed, we left the place late in the evening, we paid a lot and we were still hungry. The waiters are even though, very friendly and helpful. I would´t come back.

Very good Japanese!

By charliep14 |

Always wary of eating Japanese food (having lived 10 years) in Japan. This is the kind of restaurant you wouldn't find in Tokyo - too big, too many pages on the menu etc. - but it does the job remarkably well. Good staff to guide you through the many choices and everything is tasty and creative. It does have this 'american twist' but it's remarkably good and a good choice if you're a big group in a festive mood: many drinks and many options to try.

Simply fantastaic

By nycfamily27 |

Came here for an anniversary dinner on a Thursday night and had an awesome time. Beautiful space, attentive service, extraordinary Japanese food. The drinks are great too. Worth the trip downtown. A little pricey but worth it!

Not the usual Japanese

By Permart |

. I have been there 3 times and I have to say that the third time I was disappointed. We ordered a tasting menu (120 USD). The last dish was horrible and could not be eaten. Also had problems with the wine. They brought the bottle when we were in the 2nd dish ( tasing menu consisted of about 8 dishes ). Will not be back

Amazing price but high priced!

By S H |

The quality of food was exceptional! We had the wagyu, the codfish, the chicken, truffle egg and another dish Everything was special it itself but i would not pay $30 for the truffle egg (second pic) myself! My date invited me to this dinner and i was shocked when i saw the bill of $300+ but i got told thats normal for a new york dinner for two I would not say no if anyone would take me there again ;)

Nice restaurant

By Tunaidi |

En... I really like this place. Beautiful interior, excellent food, and great service. Brunch: * Love the Japanese-inspired cocktails. * Tofu... Wow... so good... so fresh... Creamy and delicious. * Uni Don -- Amazing... very fresh sea urchin and roe. The portion is relatively sizable as far as uni bowls come. * Kaki-furai Omuretsu -- Loved the way they fried the oyster and loved how they did the omelette. It was almost like a thin layer of egg, wrapped around the oysters. The tartar sauce was clutch! * Water... I feel tricked, but I'll let it go. The first thing our waiter asked us was whether we'd like still or sparkling water. We opted for the still, but didn't realize there would be a $9 charge for that versus regular tap water, which wasn't offered initially.

Perfection. Seriously.

By newyorkparisetc |

We've been going for the last 10 years regurarly, it's our favorite restaurant in New York, and last July we got married there. Outstanding but not ostentatious. So not for everyone. To us, it's the definitely of real luxury: quality and details. The staff is discreet and efficient. The space is stunning, yet not flashy. Amazing flower arrangements, great volumes, nice textures. You can rent little tatami rooms for parties of 6-8 and it's like you're in Japan. And the food... the chef is incredible.. and it's great to see them work in the kitchen. When it's just me and my husband, we sit a the "bar" which is not your typical "sushi bar" you still have the restaurant feeling. Must try: - the warm tofu - it opened my eyes on what tofu can be. I had no idea. - whatever chef specials... (there were fried figs last time that were unbelievable) - the miso cod - the stone organic chicken - any sort of sashimi or sushi (trust the chef) - the tofu salad - the cocktails!!! - the black sesame ice cream (they are all good but that one is incredible) You can also do the tasting menu... it's a journey. If you're budget is tight, go for lunch, it's not 100% of the experience, but still it's great. They have quite a few lunch options (including the cod, and the grilled chicken). Don't forget the black sesame ice cream. trust me.

Refined cuisine and delicious fresh tofu

By Marion T |

EN is a remarkable find down on Hudson Street in the West Village, an exquisite large open interior space with a quiet, modern decor that includes large trees and flowering branches in a central atrium. The food has nothing to do usual Japanese restaurants as ti is mostly grilled fish or meats served with delicately prepared vegetables and tofu that is made fresh each hour. Grilled salmon was this visit's special dish, but the grilled black cod, pork sandwich and fried chicken tried on previous visits are also remarkably delicious. But the tofu is the most exceptional part of the meal. Served in a wooden box at the table with a special sauce, it is unlike any tofu I have ever eaten before. Creamy and soft (a bit like melted ice cream but not sweet), it is just fantastic. Desserts are excellent also. Chocolates and cookies include some pieces flavored with green tea and the creme brûlée is worthy of a good French restaurant.

Truly not worth the hype or the good reviews. If trying too hard was a restaurant this place is it.

By Daniel G |

I went to this restaurant as a birthday dinner with a friend and was so excited to get to try the restaurant, on paper the concept sounds amazing and the space is beautiful. we both ordered the komorebi and it was off to a bad start from the beginning. the first course was a series of weirdly flavoured gelatinous things that were borderline difficult to even swallow. next came the vegetables which were fine but just didn’t have any complexity. then the sashimi… i currently live in a double land locked state and have had better fish at less fine establishments as this one. five pieces of chewy cheap bottom shelf fish is how i would summarise it. the steamed lobster seemed it would be a saving grace, as it was the first satisfactory part of the experience, but what came next continued to disappoint. the wagyu course was two pieces of wagyu that seemed to have been cooked in a easy bake oven. they were warm, that’s the only descriptor the flavour was not really there. it tasted how a bag of meat that had been in the fridge for too long smells. the somen with duck was incredible, i would have loved to have ordered something like that but as a normal portion. since we were still hungry we ordered two more rolls (the snowcrab and spicy chu toro rolls). they did get us to being full but they still lacked the complexity to bring the flavour and quality of the fish to light. then came the dessert course which was a flavourless panacotta the flavour was supposed to be matcha but it was like if i had drank matcha and breathed it onto the dessert. it was absolutely flavourless and really not a good conclusion to that misfire of a tasting menu. it was 500 (including a gracious gratuity) for two of the tasting menus, two glasses of wine, and two rolls. if the cost of the meal had been maybe some 150 less i would probably not be writing this review but the quality of the experience did no where near meet the cost of the experience.

ordered the $70 meat kaiseki, overpriced and not worth it

By Wesley M |

atmosphere is very nice and service was excellent. Unfortunately, the food has gone downhill. this is third visit over the last 4 years and was very disappointed with value equation. Dinner for 3 was $350 and did not feel the meal was special. Chicken did not have much taste and ice cream at the end was not unusual. do not plan to go back

Outstanding except spotty service

By bouchee |

Very good food, reasonable prices for high quality. Same for beverages including sake flights. But staff is lacking. Confusion over where we could and couldn't sit. Eventually agreeing we could sit in a corner table which they initially said was reserved. Then failed to bring one item we ordered. Seems a consistent theme on this trip. Waiters throughout Europe often were easier to communicate with than here in NY.

Pretty, good food

By MrsMcDill |

So firstly I should say I was part of a big group (10) for a business meal, so I think if I had come for a smaller group/couple it might have been a different experience. We opted for an early meal but it was still super busy when we arrived and had to wait 10 mins for a drink order. We were shown promptly to the table and our wait staff were kind with us while we got settled and decided to share starters and order individual mains The food was really good, from black cod to sashimi to fried chicken - there was something for everyone. Only a few issues: - Soy sauce, it was poured at the beginning and then removed from the table, getting more was hard!! - wine was being poured by staff which meant it was a little hit or miss if you got topped up down one end of the table - they made a mistake with our sushi order and brought 3x 1 kind and not the orders we asked for. They later fixed and brought out the other rolls but everyone else had finished by that point It was a good experience as a group but I’m not sure I would come back as a couple in a rush

5 star is a must

By Giacomo G |

This is probably my favorite Japanese restaurant worldwide. I’ve been eating here a bunch of times. Food is amazing. Each dish is one-of-a-kind experience. Quality or raw materials is special and kitchen is made as an artwork. Most people working here are japanese. What you get is a real experience of delight sophisticated japanese food. And interior is cosy and chic. Last night we went again for my birthday and again had a great time and food. Just service wasn’t perfect. Our waiter wasn’t so kind. but I hope they will set this.

Nice food, lively atmosphere

By nilified_life |

We decided to go there last minute and it wasn't easy to find a table so I recommend to book in advance. The restaurant deco is very nice and spacious. It was really busy but they didn't keep us waiting. The waiter was very friendly and helpful. He explained all the dishes and helped us to choose. Everything we ate were delicious and sake was very good too. Unfortunately, we were sitting between to groups, they were French and loud but I can't blame Japanese Restaurant for their noise :)

It was fun

By DorisBorisBlog |

Just had dinner with friends at EN. I sort of expected more. It was a lively, pretty place and the crowd seemed to be really enjoying themselves. We ordered one of the three specials on the menu. The black cod and the chicken were very, very good. Everything else, including sashimi and long awaited tofu were adequate but not outstanding.

Best Restaurant in Manhattan

By Gazania |

Visited with my best friend for my birthday - it was amazing. The restaurant was very busy and we had to wait for a table even though our concierge had booked for us. We were given complimentary cocktails, possibly one of the nicest things I have ever drank - sharp and sweet with tiny balls/grains of grapefruit exploding in your mouth with each sip. The staff were very attentive even though it was so busy - patiently talking me through the menu. The food was beautiful, I do not know what the dishes were called as we let our waiter order, but it was all so tasty. Will definitely be back o our next visit to NY

Too sophisticated

By Tsico H |

EN is probably the most impressive decor I've seen for a restaurant. It's beautiful, enticing and setting all that is required for a great ambience. We had two of the three set menus so that we can taste a large variety. It turned to be a mistake. It was way too much. Many of the dishes were interesting, not necessarily tasty. The best was the lobster. No doubt it was the best one I ever had. And I am 66 year of age... The Cod was good and the Sashimi was excellent. All the rest was interesting, but not to our taste. Molecular cuisine is not my cup of tea. So many dishes were nice to take photos of, but we had difficult time to eat them. So my recommendation is: go to EN, order a-la-card and then the place deserve the fourth star.

Was good ...

By Richard T |

Second visit to EN. What a disappointment !!! I had such a great experience the first time ... this time, no more originality , meal cold , probably straight out from the fridge , the place was so cold and staff does not care all their clients are wearing their jackets ! Wondering if the place have been under a new management/owner

A step above the rest

By Hege M |

This caliber Japanese eatery does not come a dime a dozen here. A big dimly lit space with a variety of seating options. Cozy and intimate in spite of the size. Meticulously feng shuied I assume :-) The fish was first rate, both the sashimi and the kaisen don. The freshly-made scooped tofu is a far cry from the brick in the white tub at the store. Mild, silky and heavenly. The vegetable tempura was also a step above average. But was really marks a Japanese restaurant is the miso soup and the sauces. They were on par with some of the best I have had in Japan. The sake flights really elevates the dishes and is a must in my opinion.

Always Other Worldy

By SilverSpringBoyz |

Oh God En is truly a religious experience and yes I am a regular customer. Art fused into food with imagination worthy of The Whitney. Any of the kaiseki selections but my regular favorite is the Aozora. Tonight - lobster in essentially an uni sauce. Then truffle chawanmushi? Each of the kaiseki selections is, of course, protein and then unimaginable protein. But the entire menu is a rotating exhibition each time you visit. Try and be glad.

An original concept not so sue it will please everyone

A nice location big and crowded We had a private room so it was cozy service is reasonable The menu Varys but the dished are influenced by Japanese kitchen maybe not like by everybody’s It’s highly price for one gets

Beautifully crafted Japanese cuisine

By Jeremy R |

My friend and I were seeking something new and eclectic and came across En. I recommend getting a reservation before going. When arriving, it felt like I just stepped into a high end hot spot in Vegas for the night. The architecture and design were amazing. As for the food, this is not your typical Japanese cuisine. You will not find the typical items at most Japanese restaurants. We had the freshly made scooped warm tofu, lightly boiled firefly squid, Pacific big-eyed tuna and avocado salad, braised Berkshire pork belly, and the green tea ice cream sandwich. It was all amazing.

Had reservation for 9pm seated at 10pm

By IamZozo |

We had a reservation for 9 pm we were seated only at 10pm and that was treated as a very casual and common event. We ordered all the 7 Kyoto appetizers about half were really good and half mediocre. The miso black cod and the stone steak were very good. The whole sea bus was amazing, same the truffle dish.

Nice place, good service.

By Diane Y |

We had an 8pm open table reservation. We arrived in time but were told our reservation was for 8:30. I double checked my Open Table account and it was indeed 8 pm. We only had to wait until 8:15 so all was not lost. A glass of wine is a bit expensive $14. We sat at a counter top looking at the sushi chefs but the counter was high so we could only see their faces. We shared everything and each had two glasses of wine. We didn’t order any special tasting menus but we did have a trio of ice creams for dessert. Our bill was $185...a bit steep I thought but we had a gift certificate and were celebrating birthdays. In the end the service was very good and the food was very good and they told us what each item was if we didn’t know. I would go back but next time I know how much I’ll spend.

Awesome food but disappointed on V-day

The first time I went, we had this incredible tasting menu with some of the best food I've ever had. The raw kobe beef was too good to be true. However, on valentine's day, they delivered this mass produced limited menu that was not up to par. I hope the restaurant maintains it's quality but something to look out for.

Unexpected charm

By Neal F |

I wish I had taken more pictures as I was impressed with the layout of this sophisticated sexy restaurant housed in a previous furniture store. There were private rooms upstairs where one could be seated on a tatami mat. Downstairs was a bar area and 2 largish separate dining areas with a water feature. High ceilings, interesting woodwork and smart lighting added to the intrigue. There was, of course, an obligatory sushi bar. The presentation of the food was priceless down to the pottery, lacquerware, glass and wood. Many trips to Kappabashi in Tokyo must have been made for all the tableware used. The homemade tofu was unusually silky and the garlic fried rice was an unexpectedly tasty. The place works!

Horrible Service

By jhilsenr |

Went with a party of 10 for a birthday party. Our waiter was horrible, he barely came around to ask for drinks, they could have made much more money off us if they asked! Food came out at different times, very awkward when some people were eating their main course and some had nothing. One person's dinner was not even brought out, they totally forgot. After everyone ate, we waited well over 30 minutes for them to bring the cake out that we brought, we almost asked for it back so we could go to the bar next door to have it. Overall, okay food but doesn't match the price, horrible service.

Over the Top Japanese with paired Saki Service

By Allan S |

Last evening with friends we visited this place. We ordered the 7 course regular service and my wife ordered the vegan multi course with saki;; it was outstanding. The fish was very fresh and my wife's vegan menu was out of sight. Although the prices of the meal was high it was worth the experience and sensual tastes. If you want unusual dishes of immaculate taste this is the place to go.

Upscale Japanese dining at its finest

By FrankFromNYC |

Though En has lots of competition for the upscale Japanese dining dollar in Tribeca--starting with Nobu, Rosajin and Brushstroke--it certainly holds its own. Its creative offering of kaiseki set menu offerings--all with sake pairing options--are amazing. My wife and I have also been there and selected from the ala carte menu and have equally enjoyed ourselves but its the kaiseki menu that sets En apart. The ambiance is a little brighter, louder and slightly less intimate than its local peers named above, but not necessarily bad, just different. And it makes up for this small competitive gap with its service, which is attentive and outstanding.

One of the best

By ManuTheEdge |

Quality, assorted of dishes, service. No dubt it's a must if you like Japanese food. We ordered blue fin sashimi, black cod, urchin maki, tuna and avocado salad and Japanese fried chicken (yes. And it was delicious). Bear in mind that will be difficult to pay less thank 100$ per person but it really worth it.

Oishi!

By Leonie |

An outstanding experience at an authentic Japanese Restaurant in West Village, Manhatten. The decor is traditional and there is a separate room for a private function. The service is good and attentive and the food is excellent. We chose the Aozora tasting menu with sake which is highly recommendable. My favourite was the grilled Lobster and Scallop with yuzu miso, the Washuguy Shabu Shabu (Beef, snapper and truffle butter sauce), and the Seasonal Rice pot with crab and porchini mushroom. The flavour combinations were outstanding and every dish was certainly a masterpiece. The menu is extensive and definately need a return visit.

Excellent Sushi !!

By Dogra11 |

I have been coming to this place for a long time and happy to say the food and service has been consistent all the time. You can book this place for large groups and you can have a quite dinner with friends as well. You can customize your dinner order in advance or go A la-carte. I will defiantly recommend this place and this place is slightly more expensive than your regular sushi joints. Please make reservations as this place gets packed.

Absolutely stunning japanese food in a high-class setting

By Resyek |

First of all I'll start by saying that I'm married to a Japanese woman, and have spent countless trips to Japan in the last 10 years. As a result my expectations on Japanese food outside Japan is usually pretty low. I was proven wrong. I was there with a few friends. We ordered a selection of their dishes: agedashi tofu (fried tofu), sushi rolls with sea urchin, cod "nobu style", vegetables with natto, the home made tofu, vegetable tempura, etc. Out of the ~10 dishes we ordered, 9 were excellent. The only disappointment was the karaage (fried chicken), which was surprisingly dry and salty, and clearly well below the standard of the place. On other points, the service was good (nothing special), and the drinks of good quality. Of course, there's a price for this quality, but I think it's worth it. bill for 4 ppl, 10 dishes, several beers and a bottle of sake: 400 USD (with tips)

Ultra fresh products, super service, A pearl in SOHO NYC

By Francois G |

The service style is like NOBU's, the waiters kneeing to catch your attention, and maybe to hear you better. The place is with High ceiling 6 meters high, with trendy decoration. And the food is extraordinary. of course sushis , sashimis ... Try the rest , try the freshly made scooped tofu, warm, made every hour , the best I ever ate . .... The prices are correct, $30 to $50 per person.

Great Prívate dining rooms

Perfect menus. Great experience. . We were there for the spring sakura festival ... And what a food and sake festival!

Disappointed

By Squishyyy |

My friend lives in NYC and highly recommend this restaurant, so I decided to take my out of town visitor to give it a try for lunch. The deco and ambience really impressive. We ordered the black cod lunch set, which is pretty good, the sashimi lunch set has nothing to write home about. But the most shocking disappointment is the bowl of rice, two bowls with the lunch set came out room temperature, dry and even some part seems uncooked. We are Asian, we eat rice all the time, we’ve been to Korea and Japan many many times, never encountered this quality of rice. We asked for two new bowls of rice, this time the rice was hot but still dry and very hard. Wonder if the kitchen person in charge of cooking rice is on vacation. Was going to mention to the manager on the way out, but didn’t see anyone at the front nor on the way out.

Authentic Food and Pleasant Environment

My spouse and I enjoyed lunch at EN Japanese Brasserie on a Sunday afternoon in late September 2016. EN is open daily for lunch/brunch and dinner daily. You can make a reservation by telephone or by using the online Open Table reservation system. EN is owned by a Japanese restaurant group that operates several sister restaurants in Japan, but this is their only US location. EN Japanese Brasserie, which opened in 2004, is located on Hudson Street in the West Village. The lounge/bar area at EN encompasses a long, beige room decorated with wood carvings, communal high-top tables and chairs, and a bar. A small dining space is located opposite the lounge area. EN’s main dining room features high ceilings and two-story windows that create a cavernous space to highlight the wood furnishings and Japanese panels. The dramatic, spacious room is anchored by an open kitchen on one end (with a blond pine communal seating counter in front of it), a central column surrounded by a floral arrangement with additional communal counter seating around it, a few well-spaced tables, and tatami-style rooms (where you sit on mats with your feet [wearing Japanese slippers] sunk beneath the table in a foot well). You can also reserve three Meiji-era-styled apartment rooms on the mezzanine level for even more private dining. The restaurant designed and imported its furniture, décor, and fabrics from Japan to create an authentic dining experience. As the restaurant’s name describes, EN Brasserie serves creative Japanese cuisine using seasonal ingredients. A monthly “Abe's Kitchen” event allows the chef to interact with guests during a multi-course meal. The restaurant offers specialty drinks, sakes, shochus (a Japanese distilled liquor), and traditional beers, wines, and spirits. We started with a sparking yuzu drink that contained prosecco, citrus juice, and elderflower liqueur. Among the cold and hot small plates offered, we chose their signature house-made artisanal tofu (made hourly and served either warm or cold with wari-joyu), a selection of o-banzai (small Kyoto-style dishes including thinly sliced shoyu-braised pork belly with lotus root (called buta bara to renklon no kinipira), yellow and purple cauliflower and broccoli in a tofu sauce (called shira ae), and shredded skinless chicken and brussel sprouts in a sesame dressing (called foma ae), miso black cod (broiled Alaskan black cod marinated in miso), crispy fried chicken (boneless and fried to perfection), yaki shabu (thinly sliced Black Angus short rib on a hot stone for grilling with veggies, chilled soba noodles (buckwheat noodles made fresh and served with a warm dashi dipping broth with slices of duck breast, spinach, and scallions), and for dessert, green tea tiramisu. We loved our lunch at EN Japanese Brasserie – authentic Japanese food in a beautiful space.

Would have been a 5* rating except for really nasty comment made by our server

By Samir K |

We were invited to this venue for dinner on a Thursday evening, by our business associates. We were a party of five and had our associates had booked a private dining room. It was a fabulous start to the evening with a server with excellent knowledge about the various ingredients and their origins. The restaurant has a vast variety of beverages on offer, including Japanese wines which are a rarity outside Japan, as well as rare whiskies. I was only disappointed by the limited variety of Japanese beers. We ordered the o-banzai appetizer - 3 Kyoto style tapas style plates. Two of the dishes were mushroom based preparations and one was a Spanish pardon style preparation. For our main course we ordered the A5 Wagyu - rare, which was served in a stone platter, truffle rice pot, which had a really rich flavor, stone grilled lobster, which was cut in a carpaccio style; amongst other items. The food was great! The meal service was great! It was a phenomenal and memorable evening! Great company, great food, great ambience! The entire experience was sullied shortly after we exited private dining when the server, possibly a Japanese origin person with longer hair and a goatee, approached me a bit aggressively and asked me (about our host) “hey, is she drunk?” - this caught me complementary off guard. I thought that perhaps he was concerned for the safety of our host as we had been dining upstairs and she may have stumbled on the stairs. I said “no, I don’t think so.” As soon I stated the latter, he said “she only gave me 9%”, with a look of disdain on his face. I shrugged, said “I don’t know and walked away quickly.” I was absolutely disgusted with this completely unprofessional display of desperation by the server, especially since I knew that the bill would have been well into the four digits and even 9% would have been a very substantial amount. Additionally, while I have the highest regard for our host, who is a vendor, there could have a scenario where I did not know our host well and this horrendous comment may have negatively shaped my opinion of the person. As I stated in the title - would have been a 5* experience of the establishment except what happened in the final 5 minutes of a 3 hour evening.

Typical japanese with a hint of international cuisine

By Philippe D |

Was recommended by a Japanese friend. Outstanding decoration, high ceilings, the peace of a Japanese place but you know that you are in Manhattan because some dishes include some french "truffes" (hint : I'm french). The food is awesome. First you look at it ... pleasure for the eyes, and then ... you eat it.

Great Japanese dining Experience

By Yoshi S |

Authentic Japanese Cuisine. Best Tofu in NYC. Feels like being in Japan. Sake paring with Kaiseki menu was amazing. Great staff, great service overall.

Beautiful restaurant, top notch Japanese food

By darbus123 |

Went on a celebration meal and it was so worth it. The service is great - they do the classic Japanese restaurant greeting when you come in which is fun. The cocktails were amazing then ordering off the a la carte and the specials was a good mix. Sure it's pretty expensive but its good for a celebration. They know their food so well, knowing the menu inside and out. Perfect for a date / celebration... definitely would recommend and am excited to go again.

Great Japanese in Meatpack

By Luca F |

This elegant restaurant offers top quality Japanese food and drinks( the sake list is excellent) to a reasonable prize in a very modern space, with distant tables that help conversation. The wagu and Kobe beef on the hot stones are here high class.

Japanese with style

By Jean H |

Perfectly located on Hudson St, this Japanese venue offers really delightful cuisine. We went for a weekday in the evening and sat in the first room (which seems to be a good option as regards the noise volume which is rather high). Japanese is offered is menus & à la carte; we opted for à la carte and were surprised to find a taste close to dishes in Japan. Two among the three of us sitting there are regulars in the country and the taste was close to the original there. Only weaker points were a bit dry tempuras. Otherwise, wagyu on the hot stone was a must. Funny & delightful. Obviously drink (sake & Japanese whiskies) list was generous and well placed. Worth going definitely since it is rather fairly priced.

not bad but as good as the promise and very rigid and unpleasant table policy

By marc1710 |

We had dinner on a crowded evening. We booked at 7pm, as we were running late i called around 6.50pm informing that we might be 10-15 minutes late. The bureaucratic sounding employee informed that they had a 15min delay table policy. I replied that given the crazy traffic and the fact that i was calling on my way i should be allowed a few minutes slack...we arrived at 7.20pm...lost the table and had to wait 30 min to get a "table" on a a long bar styled plant facing seats...so much for our first romantic dinner in our NY weekend! if the food had been amazing if would have made the pill less bitter...but it was ok not more. Portion were ridiculously tiny (and thin and small eaters)...and not the recipes nothing special- Best part were the sorbets. Service fast but unpersonal. It all felt like a half fast-food-style...fill the place and turn people around fast...price was not fast-foodish thoigh with over $200 without fancy wine.

A different experience

By paula a |

What an incredibly fun place. A large dining room with very high ceilings. They celebrate your arrival with shouts in Japanese. The best tofu I have ever eaten. Try it fresh and soft, fried with a crunchy coating, or countless other ways. The sushi is great but we especially liked trying the hot dishes. Pork and fish delicious. Great sakis. You can't lose here. They also have private rooms where you sit at floor level.

Appalling front of house, Uneducated service, So-so food

By jmanooch |

So, this place is clearly fascinated by it's own cult. Fair enough, maybe for Japanese and Japano-philes it's the bomb. But for other - you know, normal, people, it's baffling. Front of house - literally - looks up at me when I arrive, indicating there is a reservation, that says he will seat me when my party arrives. I stand there, as he goes back to his conversation with the other front of house person, and blink for some seconds before asking "should I just stand here and wait?" - and he realises he has probably been /too/ rude and invites me to sit in the bar. Service cannot answer basic questions about food options - literally seem too rushed to want to answer. Food is not even that good. I mean really. Maybe if you are super-expert you can seek out the magical stuff, but then again, the servers didn't exactly push us towards it. Super lame, not going back. Looks nice, but even then, badly lit.

Barely Japanese

By Carmi69 |

If you are looking for americanised, barely recognisable, Japanese food then this is for you. If you are looking for something remotely authentic....forget it. The "Age-Dashi Tofu" has to get a special mention..: the batter on the tofu was half an inch thick, which it needed to be to stay together in a dashi stock thickened to the point it was like cement. Go to Ootoya, simple surroundings but decent Japanese food.

Food with high standard

By Xiwei F |

The food is of high quality and served in a unique way. This is one of the best places I would recommend in NY city. :)

Rubbish

By sookay |

This place was once good - it's now just a hyped up nonsense - horrible meal - overpriced, noisy, draughty table. Tasteless food, mediocre cocktail, churchy atmosphere, for something that is only mediocre. Meaningless experience.

Very good

By Stephen L |

Ordered the same as everyone else, a set menu. Delicious but strange that every dish was explained to us in spite of having been given a personal menu of what we were getting. Sake with every course. Everything really good.

Impressive Dinner

By Adrian W |

Visited this very stylish restaurant on a business trip to New York and went with two friends who are locals living nearby . It'a clearly a popular place with the ( Small) bar and restaurant busy . I had an unfamiliar Japanese beer as an aperitif from their extensive drinks menu ( that includes a lot of sake ) whilst waiting which was very good . At the table ( after one of my friends had arm twisted the staff to give us a better place by the window) we agreed to try the tasting menu which brought up a varied cross section of beautifully prepared dishes ( sashimi and a delicious sea bass amongst them ) . The service despite how busy it was was attentive and reasonably quick and although this was far from cheap it was good value considering the quality . So for me a real find in NYC and would certainly go back .

Surprisingly authentic food and great selections of Sake

By seiichiro a |

This restaurant looks like Japanese fusion but in reality the food is very authentic Japanese. We chose Kaiseki version. Kaiseki is composed of multiple meals along with chosen Sake. I selected “Soyo Kaze”. Soyo Kaze has six meals with one desert. Sake sommelier chooses Sake for each meal. All of the combination was great and fit. Great business dinner!

EN

By Marc L |

Beautiful place with really excellent and beautifully prepared dishes. Service, however, is inattentive and almost non-existent.

Easily the best Japanese restaurant in NYC. Amazing all round experience.

By fionad491 |

Easily the best Japanese / Sushi restaurant ever. Authentic, fresh, superbly presented and delicious food, where quality comes above all. Diverse menu of Japanese delicacies encourage one to try new things, though always returning to our favorites - soft tofu, black cod miso, and the wagyu beef. Make sure to reserve ahead of time, and the bar is also fun. Enjoy!

Really cool space and great food

By Elkracer |

En is one of those restaurants you remember to tell your friends about. Real authentic Japanese food combined with a hip space. I loved all the attention to detail. In a city with so many choices this one stood out!

A couple of misses but a great way to spend an evening

By Protik IJ |

If you're looking for a great place to spend a few hours eating your way through a delicious kaiseki-style dinner that strikes a great balance between the traditional and the surprising, with equal measures of elegance and whimsy, this is a good place to start :) The restaurant is spacious and gorgeous but, rather than being formal and boring, it has a great vibe with a lively atmosphere thanks to a large number of happy guests, great music and the always busy chefs who shout out greetings (irasshaimase!) to every new party. We were seated side-by-side at the bar-like table in the middle of the main dining area and that was brill. The food was delicious! We went for the largest kaiseki menu and were, by the end, pleasantly full and thoroughly pleased. The highlight of the meal was definitely uni mousse with dashi jelly. Rice with snow-crab was a bit of a miss. It's a fun dish (a pot of rice over a flame is placed before you and left to cook for a set time) but there was too much rice, the timing was a little off so the crab turned dry and the dish was unfortunately a little bland. The strawberry pannacotta did not do justice to the rest of the meal. The sake pairings were spot-on and my only regret is that I didn't realise they'd forgotten the sake that was supposed to go with the crab. Overall, we had a great time and would love to visit again! If you decide to give this place a try, consider coming a little early in order to hang out at the bar outside the main dining area.

Disappointing and overpriced

By Mostafa E |

I went last night for dinner with some friends and we were all disappointed. The place itself is nice and spacious. The decor quite nice. We wanted to order the tasting menus, but we were told these were not available and that we can order the same plates from the menu obviously at a higher price. We found the portions very small, overall disappointing and over-priced. We ordered some sushi to fill up, which again was nothing special. The service was courteous if somewhat pretentious.

Good food, lovely atmosphere

By Taner B |

This is a great Japanese restaurant. The food is exquisite, the staff is cool and helpful. The menu of the day has no surprises and is all around good. Enjoyed it very much.

Good resturant

By fiark98 |

The resturant was very nice with a good atmosphere! The staff was friendly and helpful! The food was really delicious, a little expensive but totally worth it! Fresh and different, and taste of a real Japanese cuisine! The only negative thing was that the meals were pretty small, so you needed to order two or three dishes to get full!

Takeout quality - huge disappointment

By Verity666 |

I live in the neighborhood and have never spent less than $100/person when dining there. I had the most disappointing experience at EN Japanese 3 weeks ago. It was for a business dinner and quality of the food was horrible especially compared to the prices that they charge. We had to send one dish back. The sushi special which cost $40/ order wasn't of a comparable level of freshness as I had before. Some of the other dishes were of take out quality. The drinks were filled almost entirely with ice cubes and very little liquid. The waitress was absent half the time. I was so embarrassed in front of my business associate! This restaurant used to be my go to place to take guests. It is obvious that over time, the management has chosen profit over customer experience. I spoke to the management the day after the dinner, and they never had the curtesy to call back with any resolution, after I spent $200 for a dinner for 2. I will not go back there again and have requested a refund through my credit card company.

Food And service was great

By Arhak |

Very refreshing experience for a Japanese restaurant. Service was great and the food as well For a 2 party diner we paid $350 and in my opinion a little over the top. Again quality is really good but a lot of money for a night out. But I think we will be back again;)

A West Village's treasure!

By alxndrdvl |

Amazing discovery in the West Village. A little pricey, but quality has a price. Excellent service and adorable staff, exquisite raw fish and finest meat. We just had a lovely time there and enjoyed everything we ordered. Would definitely return, especially to try the Chef's 8-guest special dinner every last Tuesday of the month. Highly recommended!!!

Vegas in NYC

By MICHAEL ASHWORTH |

Great space with high ceilings and well spaced tables make this West Village Japanese an unusual find. It feels more like a Vegas high end 'chain' than an individual restaurant. We did a walk in at 8pm Saturday and we're lucky to get a table at the central "bar" that they have for overflow We ordered al a carte and despite being told the portions were small I dint think anyone could complain on portions Unfortunately the food while good wasn't great. The sashimi was cut too think so while fresh wasn't the same melt in the mouth quality you get at a great sushi place Tuna and avocado salad was good as was the chicken on the hot stone. The beef that you seated yourself could have been better EN also offered a series of chefs menus which sounded good. I think we need to go back and try them Attentive service made it a pleasant experience So not the best sushi by any means but with a visit

Avant garde Japanese

By James W |

Aesthetically, the restaurant was attractive done is black with light frame décor and subdued lighting to give a modern and relaxing appearance. The menu offered various Japanese style dishes, but with various twists to make them unique to this restaurant. Because the dishes were non-traditional, I could not easily discern what I was going to get, so felt a bit frustrated as to what to order. I decided upon a "salmon collar" for dinner. Seemed safe enough. Indeed, I did get salmon, but on a heavy bone which constituted half of the serving. The salmon was good - yes, it tasted like salmon. But, with the generous portion of bone, there was not much actual fish to eat. I guess if you know this beforehand, and you are hungry, you can order various side dishes. Also, the service was slow. Overall, I felt a bit let down.

Excellent Japanese Restaurant: priced in style

Outstanding

By David B |

Attentive service, incredible food, we chose the tasting menu and it was outstanding. Our server paced the food perfectly and explained every dish in detail and a great deal of love. Would highly recommend EN, my only tip is not to eat much during the day if you are trying to tasting menu !!

Place to go in Manhattan for high quality Japanese food

By AA123Perth_Australia |

Visited with son and daughter as a group of 4 and thoroughly enjoyed the evening at En-high quality Japanese restaurant. Make sure that you book. Tried a mix of set menus for each with sake flights and enjoyed well paced dinner with plenty to eat-drink of fresh and good quality Japanese food and drink. En threw i n a couple of complimentary dishes including truffle based dish. Pricey-$150 per head with drinks- but not left feeling diddled.

Nippon Refined

By Foodi |

There is a grand feeling to the high celings if En. However the simple yet sophisticated food, the elegant army of service, all attractive and all dressed in black if course, moving discereetly, almost as ballet dancers, creates a beautiful backdrop to an evening well spent. The sashimi is highly recommended, the salmon was probably the best I have ever had, and I'm from Scandinavia, practically born with a salmon in my hands. I also recommend the crab rice, go for the vegetarian side dishes if you like light eating, and as a dessert -,the green tea, fig and black sesame ice cream is a must.

Perhaps THE BEST Japanese Restaurant in Manhattan

By Sayscj |

You will be hard pressed to find a better Izakaya even in Tokyo or Kyoto. The ambience is brillantly conceived, the service excellent and unobtrusive, and the food beats anything I had in NYC so far: from the sublime freshly made scooped tofu to the Tasmanian sea trout, the lobster ishiyaki to the Berkshire pork belly, not to mention a wonderful choice of Sake. Can't wait to visit again.

We walked in and ate in the bar area. Service was very slow to start (like 20 min with nothing) but improved from there. We ordered about 10 items to share. All were very good. Would return for sure!

Authentic japanese

By GravelRoadAdventures |

Set in a huge space with stylish elements this is a piece of Japan. The food can be adventurous for Western palates but there is lots of variety to choose from, with incredible flavor combinations. The menu is extensive with many choices in each of vegetarian, meat or fish categories. Think beef on a hot rock or broiled black cod.

Go for the prix fixe

By David M |

While it's not true of every restaurant in New York City, the Big Apple has more than its fair share of places that turn out superlative food as a matter of course. EN Japanese Bistro is one of those places. I was lucky enough to join two good friends at EN on a Saturday evening in August. The space is magnificent, very high ceilings and wonderful carvings in wood and the hospitality was generous and patient. While the restaurant offers dishes a la carte, but we went with the six course prix fixe menu and found it fantastic. First, it took a lot indecision and stress out of the meal to let the restaurant decide which dishes to showcase and in what order. Second, being on the prix fixe gave the meal a very relaxed and easy pace and, third, the prix fixe menu let us get up from the meal feeling satisfied but not stuffed. Now, the prix fixe is not inexpensive. Without alcohol it's $65 per person. And it takes time. We sat down at 8:45 and got up to leave at 11:30. But it was a memorable tour de force of delicious Japanese cuisine that we all felt glad we had the chance to have the experience.

Not Japanese!

Not cheap not good!nothing to eat. Hopeless to visit. Donburi is only can eat.

It's no Nobu

By showbizandi |

This is a nice restaurant in a nice area. The bar staff make some cracking cocktails. I found the portion sizes a little small and the menu a little confusing. As with most Japanese high end restaurants it's a sharing service with dishes arriving as they are ready from the various kitchens. The service was warm and friendly and the dishes all tasted good. There were no stand out dishes.

EN is a good japanese restaurant west SoHo.

By einar e |

Very popular resturant with a lot of guests, both from Japan, Asia, US and Europe. The Staff welcome you with a common HEY. No tables for 2 in the main room, you are placed by the Kitchen or a big round table. I am not so fond of that. I like a table for 2. Choose among a lot of small and tasty dishes. We had Edamame (a must), vegetable tempura (fresh vegetables, but too much tempura), Ebi Shinjo (shrimps fritters - the WINNER of the day, very tasty), crispy fried chicken (large pieces, very good), toro salmon sushi (lightly seared - I prefer raw), homemade Tofu (great) and Asari miso Soup With clams (very good).

Not the usual Japanese

By Permart |

This restaurant is not the regular sushi place. In fact there is little sushi in the menu. Quality of food is very good. Full bar available

An interesting experience, but was once enough?

By Donald S |

Coming from Japan, this US version opened 14 years ago and another opened in LA 1-2 years ago. The interior is well appointed and spacious and even a few tatami rooms – I suppose for special occasions. As the tables filled and the noise level was up, the music was also turned up, so it became rather loud. The service is generally excellent, but the person taking away dishes was a bit too aggressive in his job. As I was eating something, he would take away the dish without asking, even as I was putting some bit of food into my mouth. That was annoying instead of efficient. The dishes weren’t always empty/finished. The drink menu is quite large with pages of whiskeys and more of shochus and also sakes. The sake bottle prices were mostly around $100-200, but they went up to $1,200 for some special bottles. Seasonal kaiseki is always available, and I would say reasonably priced, although I didn’t have it to taste it. Unfortunately everyone in the party must have it or no one can. I don’t see the sense in that. About 50% of all 3 kaiseki versions (one is even vegan) looked good, but the rest didn’t look delicious to me at all. So we ordered from the menu, which is rather extensive. The vegetable appetizers all seemed interesting to me. The 3 we selected were good to average. One was mushrooms in broth, the next pork with lotus, the third shishito peppers in a broth. I like grilled shishito peppers a lot, but the broth made them messier to eat and in my opinion didn’t add anything. I really like spinach ohitashi, so selected the white asparagus ohitashi, expecting something like the spinach version. It was like a bowl of dashi lightly scented with cherry – not sure if natural or not although there were 2 cherry blossom petals on top and a cherry tree leaf at the bottom of the bowl of broth. We could taste the cherry, which was nice. But otherwise, they seemed like white asparagus bought in a jar and cut up – all in all about 4 stems cut up for $15. The homemade tofu was really delicious and they offered sea salt or a sauce. A single piece of wagyu nigiri sushi at $28 for the bite was a disappointment. It was over-sauced and decorated. The rice ball fell apart and it tasted more like a piece of rare roast beef from the deli instead of a buttery piece of raw, wagyu beef. Another chef’s choice was the uni on top of yuzu-flavored yuba (tofu skin). It was very interesting and quite good for $28. For the same price we also got a small uni-chawanmushi, but they added shaved truffle, since it was the special. The earthy taste of the truffle was an interesting note to the slightly metallic taste of the uni, but I felt it overpowered what is normally a very subtle flavor (the custard and uni). Another chef’s special was the seasonal fiddlehead fern, which I love simply sautéed in olive oil or butter. This was presented as tempura. More typical for really good Japanese tempura is a batter so light, it almost seems as if it not there. So it adds a crunch that doesn’t hide the vegetable. We thought these fiddleheads were too heavily breaded – almost like shrimp in a bad restaurant, so we could hardly taste the vegetable. Finally we selected the sashimi omakase for $80. Most of it was very good to average. I expected more from a place like this and at $4/slice. The shiso leaves were often dried out and bit shriveled and should not have been on the plate like that. One of my favorites, yellowtail, was very disappointing with is grainy/mushy texture. I never had fish like that and cannot figure out how that could have happened. The taste seemed off. The wasabi, while not “real,” seemed to be the kind made of the artificial wasabi mixed with some of the chopped stems and leaves, so better than average, but not the real thing. So I have mixed feelings about the place. Perhaps other menu choices would have made me happier, but I am not sure I really want to return with so many other wonderful choices in the city.

For top-notch Japanese fare beyond sushi

By hask74 |

We enjoyed every single dish last night, the fresh tofu made hourly, the asari clams, the O-Banzai kyoto style appetizers, the Karei Age fried flounder with ponzu sauce. The desserts, too. Our very un usual shochu (a 25 percent alcohol spirit served on the rocks) was tasty but I would not especially recommend it. (Gyokuro) There are many many sakés to choose from. Service very professional and kind. We came at 630 thus we the first clients and everything was served very very fast, not necessary, but we understand. Very attractive decor. A few private rooms available. 500 for 6 people witgh the expensive bottle of shochu (74) tax and tip

Delicious and incredible!!

By Yara Z |

This restaurant was fantastic. Their tofu incredible, and all their small kaizeki style dishes as well. I went with two Japanese acquaintances through work, and let them order. They knew the chef very well, so we did get some special small dishes, but all in all, I loved it.

Lovely atmosphere, decent food.

*3.5 stars* Came here for a date and overall had a great time and experience. Everything was so cutesy, creative, and unique, from the interior design to the dishes. The service was impeccable and friendly. Fried Oyster- 5/5 This was delicious! They cut it up 1 oyster into 4 pieces so it was easy to eat. Topping and sauce was delicious. Freshly Made Scooped Tofu ($11)-3.5/5 Fresh made tofu, definitely something I haven't tried, albeit I'm not a huge fan of tofu. They have an option of warm or cold, and we went with the warm one and added the wari-joyu and it tasted pretty good. I suggest adding more of this because it really enhances the flavor. Saikyo Miso Black Cod ($26)- 3.5/5 Two big portions of black cod, nicely cooked. However, it tasted just as good as any other Japanese restaurant I've been to. Mushroom and Crab Clay Pot ($40) 3.5/5 Comes out in a big clay pot, and rice is well seasoned with mushroom and snow crab. Overall quite tasty and portions are good enough for 2-3 people. Chu Toro Spicy okaka ($21)- 4.5/5 Yummy tuna sushi roll, although it seems and looks very basic. It had this crispyness to it, which was delicious. We ordered 2 rolls of this, and I still couldn't get enough. Raw Tuna & Avocado Salad ($22)- 3/5 The tuna to this had a quite strong fishy smell/taste to it, but it was bareable. En House Ice Cream ($10)- We got earl grey tea, fig, and fuji apple sorbet. The fuji apple sorbet was amazing, and the fig was unique.

EN..J..Brasserie-- ENJoyable

By Sankarmukh |

I have been to this restaurant with a large group and we had Chef Abe's Kaiseki Lunch. This was a veritable feast. The restaurant is quite large and has a lot of event rooms. It was not crowded at lunch hour. It is understandable because it was Sunday and raining. However, the service and food is excellent. It was a 9 course lunch and they even threw in black cod as extra. The menu was: HOUSE-MADE FRESH TOFU ZENSAI chef’s selection of seasonal fish & vegetables SMOKED SASHIMI cold smoked with cherry wood LOBSTER ISHIYAKI grilled lobster with miso butter TRUFFLE CHAWANMUSHI truffles egg custard WAGYU A5 Japanese Black Angus beef from Miyazaki, Japan UNI RICE POT SEASONAL SORBET CHOCOLATE MOUSSE I must say that that the Wagyu beef is to die for. Their regular menu looks good too. So, please hurry and go

Watch out the set menu as it is expensive

But be sure you will never eat something like it. 7 course dish whereby each dish has a Saki to go with it! So be ready to drink. The Chef is a genius

EN Japanese Grasserie Needs a Refresh

By JamesJasper |

Several years ago, this restaurant was superb . . . the ambiance, a fresh altermative in Tribeca, with its low slung tables and banquettes and loungey dining chairs and Japanese architectural elements. Sadly, on our recent visit to NYC, we were disappointed with a restaurant that needs to be refreshed, from leather dining chairs falling apart, to ripped paper motifs above the windows, overly steaming radiators, all missing the elegance of our New Year's Eve dinner there in 2014. The food is still good and service was swift, attentive, and unpretentious. We love their sushi rolls, which are a roll beyond the normal. The pre-fix options with sake pairings (albeitn somewhat pricey) are a certain way to ensure a full-rounded taste experience. One of my favorite (reasonably priced) dishes is the chilled soba noodles with duck breast and scallions. I wish the owners would polish the place up a bit, as the food and service are always good, and I'm giving it an average rating for this reason.

Very good fish, nice ambience, expensive

By ANICOCE |

Classical sushi place in downtown NY, remembered and loved by many New Yorkers, rightly so. Great tuna, tuna and avocado salad, good sushi and broad selection overall although not exceptional not particularly creative, with good service. Please tell ambience and atmosphere, you can talk even if crowded. Expensive, though. N

Authentic enviroment, amazing cuisine

By ninavroz |

Authentic Japanese environment, well-mannered waiters spending all night over your table truly amazing cuisine and beautiful people from Village. EN is really a Japanese oasis in the heart of NYC.

Excellent Japanese

By SileneinSing |

I went with two other friends. First of all, the restaurant is stunning, with the Japanese wood paneling, nice trendy bar and the food divine. I had the appetizer pork with veggies in a shabu dashi broth which is just divine. It was so large and enough as an entree. Friends had the sashimi which was the freshest. Dry sake to wash it all down. Dessert, the matcha tiramisu was the best.

Hands down... the best.

By CECTRAV |

Hands down the best resturant in Manhattan. The food is amazing, service is fantastic and the ambiance is spot on. Our waitress was second to none and she also had some great recomendations for myself and my partner from the menu. Every time I visit NYC, I'm coming here.

えんのヂィナーウセット

By Adeline R |

I came here today with my family and the dishes were phenomenal! We ordered the signature dinner set which was packed with fresh, authentic Japanese flavor. The set was satisfied but did not make us feel stuffed, absolutely wonderful!!

It's worth what it costs

By Satoko Y |

When it comes to dine at Japanese restaurant in N.Y., it's always hit- and -miss. I have been coming to EN since they opened. First of all , I love the ambulance, decor and high ceiling. Service and food are consistently excellent therefore I always can't wait to go back there. This time, I had "Omakase" at the counter prepared by Mr. Goto, a premier chef who is passionate about his presentation . My favorite dishes are homemade tofu and Saikyo Miso Black cod.

Cavernous izakaya

By Ken S |

A huge space. No trouble getting reservations here. You can also choose between plenty of private rooms if you like. The main dining hall can be a bit noisy. Food is good. Izakaya style but dressed up. Restaurant exudes that lofty industrial chic that predominates in TriBeCa. Extensive sake list. There's huge variety but sakes are a bit pricey.

very good very unique

By El Dorado |

This restaurant has been poppin in NYC for as long as I can remember. It's not easy to stay open for as long as this place has. The menu is unique and fantastic. Not a place to go for sushi, but they have every type of other japanese dish. I recommend the uni pot. From the tea to the cocktails to the service to the different meats they have this place is the pinnacle of excellence in NY dining!

I thought sake was boring!

By Clopes72 |

We had 2 of the menus - great portions which we could not finish, but some of the items were a bit boring. The food was fine, but not the most exciting part of the experience. What was really memorable was the sake pairing and a an extra bottle we ordered. Never thought that sake could be this complex and delicate. Service was excellent and the decoration beautiful. Overall, it did not disappoint!

Good food, Terrible Service - not worth the price

By Christina |

Incredibly disappointing! I was looking forward to celebrating valentines day and had reserved in advance for the valentines tasting menu which the restaurant called to confirm 2 days in advance. Arrived at 7:25 for the 7:30 reservation and it went down hill from there. Service or lack there of was atrocious! When we tried to order the waiter informed us that we would not be able to partake in the valentines meal because it required advance reservations (this is despite being handed a menu with the valentines tasting option included), we let him know that we had in fact confirmed with the restaurant earlier that week. He left to reconfirm with the front of the house and returned later saying okay and took our menus. 20 minutes later we were served a sashimi plate by another staff member which was the second course in the menu, we then tried to flag down our waiter to ask about our first caviar course that had not arrived. He said he would have to check and left. It took 45 minutes for us to recieve our first course, a plate of caviar. No attempt at any apologies was made for the rest of the 3+hour dinner. During which we saw the waiter a total of 5 times - one of which was to be served food for another table (not part of the tasting menu and he never even came back, we realized it was for the next table over and awkwardly handed it to them ourselves), we ran out of water several times, waited extended periods between courses (an uncooked 6 course tasting menu should not take that long between plates), were not offered or able to order tea or any other beverage with dessert and never checked on during the meal regarding our food or experience. Sitting at the bar the poor chefs felt so bad for us they came out from the kitchen to serve us twice directly rather than wait for our waiter and eventually flagged down someone to help us pay our bill. The only apologies came from the chefs which was completely inappropriate as the food was the only thing worthwhile! The tasting menu was also supposed to come with a take home dessert which we did not recieve and when requested were told had run out. Honestly if I didn't feel for the hospitality industry I would of been inclined not to tip. Understood that restaurants are busy which is fantastic, and that mistakes can sometimes be made, but with so many great options in NYC, and a bill at almost $500 a pop, you expect some level of service, and a basic apology is a baseline when errors occur. The party next to us was also incredibly frustrated and annoyed with the same waiter; the management needs to address this or patrons won't return. For my part, while the food was excellent, the service was so terrible I would not recommend coming here. Instead I would suggest Gramercy Tavern (they do have a seafood forward tasting menu option), much better service for the money.

A Mecca of japanese Beauty

By Dtrot57 |

I had the suggestion for this from my friend Little Steven and I have to say he was absolutely righto Great ambient.E xcellent cocktail and very special and unique foodo Be ready t be surprised and to pay the gift properly.

really tastelessness

By sanmerle |

as somebody who is in the top one percent of reviewers in New York, Om Trip advisor I can honestly say this is by far the worst meal I have had in New York. I seldom write negative reviews, I would rather not write at all. I found the restaurant void of atmosphere and the food absolutely tasteless. the salmon rice pot was really bland with no taste and a very fishy taste, in fact we could not eat it. when the manager asked how it was and I said tasteless, she looked so surprised and said well it IS very good, why did she bother to ask if she simply did not care that we did not enjoy this or any other part of the meal. On arrival we were shown to a table not in the main dining area, but in the entrance near the bar area, totally unacceptable, I was annoyed, the manager, certainly not a maitre d, endeavoredntontell me he really preferred these tables. Staff at front reception not very professional, I certainly would not recommend this restaurant.

Great Brasserie

By Brc C |

EN is a very fresh look at Japanese Cousine> if you want to try japanese tastes that are different to just Sushi and Sashimi then you must try this place. The decoration is very calming, open wide restaurant, high ceilings, very pleasant atmosphere. Good service and nice menu. It also has a great Sake and Cocktail choices. It is great for a lunch and bruch. Highly recommended. We met Yoko Ono there :))

We expected kaiseki

By Sonia.Henrik |

All we got was an americanized version of kaiseki. What a disappointment! And the service was atrocious. So many waiters just chatting amongst themselves. Definitely not to recommend if you hanker for quality Japanese kaiseki. Way overpriced for what you get.

Extremely tasty with price to match

By ReeceLiang |

Without exaggeration, the sushi smoked in cherry wood might be the best dish I've ever had. The quality of the fish, the presentation, and the flavors were simply fantastic. I got the full tasting menu with the sake accompaniment and that dish was the star. I would recommend against the tasting menu given the price and some of the dishes are not needed, but be sure to order the sashimi.

Great food, but snoby service

By Taffoolie |

The place is amazing, high ceiling , big windows and a very nice decoration. The service from the beginning is not very nice, the girl at the reception is veryyyy snobyyyy and unpleasant , even if you have a reservation and been there many itmes. The food i excellent and the choice of the menu is amzaing, but the food came not at the same time, so some of us finish food and the others just go theirs, its a pity because it destroys the ambiance. But the food is excellent .

Average Restaurant with Good Decor

By JJPPWW |

This is my first visit to this place and I found the decor was excellent. It made me feel relax and it was very quiet compared to some of the other places we went to. We orderes 6 dishes with the Tofu and Tuna salad was excellent. However, the lobster was small and not as good as we would havae imagined. Overall, the food was average but most if then was overpriced for the quantity that was given to us. May go back again...

Wonderful dining experience!

By Yin H |

Took some friends out this week to this beautiful restaurant. The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, and the rhythm of how the dishes were presented smooth and delightful! And the different flights of sake are worth trying. Will be coming back soon.

Very nice atmosphere with so so japanese food

By ztacir |

I have always wanted to visit EN for a long time as it is one of my favorite places in terms of interior design and space which has a huge dining area with exactly right number of sitting. You just feel like you are definitely in Japan. However, the food is just ok. Especially maki rolls was very different but disappointing for me. The Maitre'd was so annoying which does not add to popularity of the restaurant. I do not think I will return.

Worth The Price In Special Circumstances

By Youngryman |

Two dinner experiences with friends and family so far. Except for the bar area, it's too cavernous to make me fully comfortable, notwithstanding the dark elegance. Excellent food, presentation and service although the sashimi could have been better. Many imaginative and pleasing offerings on the menu. The memory of such things as the freshly-made tofu, mushrooms in soy milk, uni sushi and minced pork with lotus root lives on. I will return and pay the relatively high price if my guests are going to be people who need the upscale feel of the place to help them respect and enjoy Japanese cuisine. Probably best as a place to make an impression on a date or business associate. But for regular eating of Japanese food I prefer the much simpler, smaller and less expensive places like Sobaya, Mishima and Takahashi. Thankfully, Manhattan is loaded with very good Japanese restaurants in all price ranges

Insanely delicious Tofu

By Scott T |

This restaurant is a rockstar Fun Gregarious and sumptuous cornucopia of perfect dishes. Who would think to order fried chicken, so tender and juicy, and tofu which was so dreamy it was unforgettable. Listen to your server for suggestions as they are fonts of knowledge. Our sushi rolls were perfect and the beef sliced on a bed of savory spring onions teases the palate. We paired with a great Pinot Noir.

Impressive

By ordinarymind |

We were a party of 5 on Saturday night and had an outstanding visit. We selected the multi-course dinner and were very impressed with the quality and the variety of food presented. Service was excelent but not oppressive/stuffy and the atmosphere was airy and elegant/austere. Despite its being a large, open space, the restaurant was not noisy and one did not get the feeling of being rushed, harried or that the staff wanted to "move us along." My companions had a bunch of sake (I don't like sake) which was adjudged outstanding by its consumers (admittedly, their judgment may have been a bit "impaired" by the end of the evening). By the way, if you or your party drink lots of sake, be prepared for a significant check. I'm not sure what Japanese restaurant to compare this to in New York. I have not been to the Morimoto in New York but am familiar with the Philadelphia location which is also outstanding but much, very much, busier and louder. ENJB seems almost zen-garden like by way of comparison.

Surprisingly disappointing

By BaghdadbytheBay |

We were having a later dinner on a weeknight. We ordered a variety of rolls, a salad and sashimi. I tasted a bit of it all. Mind you, this is supposed to be an unusually good Michelin rated restaurant. I was shocked at the blandness of the greens and the mediocrity of the fish. For the price, and overall, it was a huge disappointment.

Fantastic food and attentive service

By daffido |

The restaurant setting, food, drinks and service are simply excellent. I am not a specialist of Japanese food but I found this restaurant of high quality and authentic. At the same time, the personnel remains accessible and humble. I highly recommend their tofu made fresh every hour. The cocktail drinks are made from fresh ingredients and are delicious.

Nice place

By Roger M |

I was in for a meeting and decided to try this place. What a nice surprise. The place is big and a nice vibe. I'm Printing House area an industrial space made Zen-ish. I was there for lunch and tried the sashimi special. It was a very nice choice as it came with soup, salad, rice, sashimi and the star which was their made soft tofu. Please try their tofu, it was awesome. I also had their oolong tea which was nice. I would love to try this place for dinner.

Great food but waiting staff not measuring up

By Fionan1957 |

Food is always great. I ordered The Japanese style and was expecting our dishes to come in sequence pacing with our speed of eating. Instead, they brought dishes in hurry and we could not eat in such fast speed. As if they wanted us to eat fast and leave. There was a bus boy always wanted to move our p,ages even though we were not finished. He also looked scary. No smile. Also I have gone there so many times and menu has not changed much. The best part of Japanese cuisine is it uses seasonally available, fresh ingredients. So usually menu changes according to seasons. Not here and it is shameful as dishes they serve are great. My favorite is Shiso garlic rice and home made tofu.

Was Worried

By Tony R |

I was there a year ago and had a fabulous dinner. I read some reviews and was worried because I was taking important friends for a special dinner. However, it was a great dinner, with knowledgeable, tasteful service, and the food came in the correct order. The sashimi was firm and fresh, and the house-made tofu was a superb treat. The hamachi kama (cheeks) was perfect, and the salmon rice filled out a hearty meal. Wonderful list of saki.

Blatant discrimination against couples?

By OZinNY (Don Lee) |

We never got as far as dining in the restaurant. Why? Because, apparently, if you book as a couple they will only seat you at a counter or offer you a low table in the lounge. It seems, the proper dining at proper tables are reserved for parties of 4. We had made a reservation at 6pm for 2. We arrived on time and the main dining area of the restaurant was virtually empty with most of the tables unoccupied. We were directed immediately to a bench and asked to sit side by side. When we objected, we were shown to the lounge area and offered a low table. We refused since this would place us in the middle of a different crowd of people who would tend to be more boisterous than people in the main dining hall. Really, what sort of dining experience would it be sitting at an uncomfortable low table in a bar's lounge area? So, reluctantly, we voted with our feet and chose to leave rather than be discriminated against and treated with disrespect simply because we decided to dine as a couple. This is unacceptable restaurant policy. We will avoid them in future so long as they believe they can disrespect and treat couples wishing to dine with them as second class customers who are refused access to regular tables.

Great food and perfect service!

By nat n |

This is definitely one of the best Japanese restaurants I've ever been to! The food was very delicious and authentic, the atmosphere - great! The restaurant has a modern design with dimmed light which created a cosy feeling. We throughly enjoyed the services - the staff was very helpful and attentive. We highly recommend EN Japanese Brasserie

Love it!!! Best japanese in town

By Carmem M |

I love japanese food. The real one. EN is located in the coolest area of the West Village, on Hudson Street and its a wonderful place for dinner and lunch. They have the best sesame and green tea icecream ever and the best matcha expresso. A must try if you are a matcha lover. The food is amazing. Dont miss the avocado and tuna salad, the black cod in miso sauce and the salmon pot. My favorites.

Beautiful space, attentive service and excellent Japanese cuisine.

By jdg1964 |

This West Village Japanese restaurant is a great place to bring someone for a special occasion. The space is large, elegant and tranquil. We opted out of the kaiseki menu because it requires all of the table to participate. Instead we selected several items from the seafood menu. The black cod and Tasmanian sea trout were outstanding. My son enjoyed the mochi croquette very much. Thankfully we saved room for the wonderful desserts including the black sesame ice cream and home make chocolates. It should be noted that the dinner tab can be quite considerable if you are not careful. However the quality of the fish and the level of service is excellent.

Modern, healthy, minimal Japanese cuisine

By lovetravelling0820 |

1st time I can say I enjoyed a very original preparation of tofu! Seems to be a signature appetizer of this American outpost of a Japanese signature restaurant, well known to the Japanese.

nice place, creative menu

By mmcbDenver |

EN has very small portions (except for the whole sea bass which was phenomenal). That said, we had plenty to eat and it wasn't overly expensive. The dishes are very creative, delicious and different. The interior is beautiful and we had great service. I would definitely go back.

Recent lunch visit does not disappoint

By Mjwinkusa |

We have had the pleasure of dining at EN on several occasions over the past few years and can report that the culinary experience remains consistent and highly pleasurable. Our latest visit featured luncheon specials including Saikyo Miso Black Cod (with mizuna and watercress salad, freshly made tofu with wari joyu, chef’s selection of obanzai, oshinko (housemade Asa-Zuké pickles) steamed rice and housemade miso soup) and the ever popular Crispy Fried Chicken (with mizuna and watercress salad, freshly made tofu with wari joyu, chef’s selection of obanzai, oshinko (housemade Asa-Zuké pickles) steamed rice and housemade miso soup). The dining room is large and welcoming if a bit on the industrial side and the service is friendly and attentive. If you enjoy specialty cocktails you owe it to yourself to try a selection from the house menu. The ginger cocktail is especially tasty (with homemade ginger ale with Shiro rice shochu, lime juice and soda) and comes in a non-alcoholic version which is every bit as tasty. Enjoy.

Was once superb

By UsaTraveler49 |

This has been one of my favorite restaurants in NY for years but what a disappointment it was this week. It just starts with the service which was non-existent and no longer knowledgeable about the menu - I knew more about it and Japanese food than my waiter! And yes, many millennial NY wait staff act like they are angry to be in a service profession and act like they should be the diners, but on this evening we had to beg for everything while they stood around. The food used to be divine and now it is just good.

Nice Japanese dinner

By MicheleParis |

My friends took me for dinner 2 weeks ago. I love Japanese food which is not too traditional. It was a nice surprise. We were 3 and we ordered the following on Buta shabu salad which was very good raw tuna & avocado salad vegetable tempura saikyo miso Black cod. This was indeed excellent ! Crispy fried chicken En Garlic shies fried rice (very good) ! The decor is nice and the staff courteous. Depending where you are sitting as it could be a little bit noisy. A nice evening. Though prices are high, I will come back.

Perfect for a celebration

By geordieone |

Ten of us were celebrating a graduation, and we were seated in a tatami room. Private and with the benefit of very attentive wait staff, including the main server who explained everything entertainingly and comprehensively, from the very rich and melt-in-your-mouth-like-butter wagyu beef to the uni ice cream. Had a selection of the set chef's menus, with some extras. Sake was smooth and divine. A wonderful experience all-told, and what few caveats we may have had (not crazy about the rice dishes, for example) faded in the wonderful totality of the experience. And the presentation of the food was quite beautiful.

Wonderful, or as they say in Nihon, SUGOI!!!

By AlexisinNYC |

This has become my favorite restaurant in NYC. It's a beautiful place (rather romantic decor), and the food is terrific -- like a very modern take on a Japanese izakaya. They've got an excellent sake collection, and the service is superb! Have been several times now, and I can't wait to go back. The only quibble is that it's a bit noisy -- but I wouldn't change a thing.

NY treat

Japan comes to New York

By Sheri L |

EN Japanese Brasserie, a restaurant in Japan has been transplanted to New York. It is a lovely modern, comfortable, space with some of the best fresh made Tofu in the U.S. It offers seasonal delicacies for the those that are familiar with Japanese cuisine. The Brunch box on weekends is really a treat.

Your reservation means nothing to us!

By Dalia L |

The last time we had been here with a party of 9 we had a lovely dinner and decided to return for a family occasion. MONTHS IN ADVANCE we booked a table in the lounge area, mentioned the occasion. A few weeks before, we called to discuss corkage fees for bringing our own bottle. The day of the event, we see that the lounge has been set for a party twice as large as ours. Where is our table? Up a flight of stairs (I have very bad arthritis and can't do stairs) on top of their grill vent! What happened to our reservation? THEY GOT A BETTER OFFER and shoved us in an upstairs corner. A room that was SMOKE-FILLED because their grill vent was broken and all the smoke was pooling upstairs. This reservation was confirmed months before. They had our phone number, e-mail, etc. and made no effort to contact us and ask if it would be okay to move us. What if I was wheelchair bound that day? Where would they have put me? They then offered to relocate us within 15 minutes. Which turned into 20 which turned into 25. Which turned into never. And this "pleasure" cost us over $1100. It doesn't matter how good the food is, our party was ruined by their decision to disregard our reservation and then keep lying to us about moving us. Throwing a few free drinks and desserts our way did nothing to help the ruined atmosphere. If you have a small party you will probably be fine, but I strongly recommend against planning a large group event. If they get a better offer they may shove you aside and you won't know until you get there. That's what happened to us.

If you can afford it, it is a go!

By Winder226 |

This is a place where the color of your credit card counts. Nothing is cheap, from the decor to the meat. If you feel portions are too small, order two. If you go with this clear in mind, you'll have a great experience. Everything is still calling us to go again, from the simple edamame soaked in miso, to the unusual nigiri lightly sprinkled with garlic, to the splendid wagyu (high marbling which I arrogantly believe was above the nominal A5 they wrote on menu). A warning: for traditionalist you may find one or two ingredients too many in several classic dishes which I know some people do not like. If you are part of this club, ask first to avoid disappointment, but if you forget, all the flavours are balanced so you will not loose your integrity for a night. And finally a sake list that is worth reading and questioning. Definitely a must for sake-lovers. We had a sensational experience from the moment we got in to the one we left. We will be back.

Authentic Japanese Cusine

By SouthSea1991 |

High ceiling dining space with tables distant to each other that it is a very good environment for business chats. Sushi Bar dining table setting apart from many tables. Interesting tasting menu (3 level selection)with matching Saka is served. Extremely reasonable price as what it is served. Soko kaza was chosen by my host but Aozora was much appealing to me; sashimi was on average but the mushroom appetizer was excellent. Waiters behavior were exceptionally good as In New York the typical service behavior is the worst in the world standard, sorry to say that as my 30+ year New York visit experience tells. Book days in advance.

Very good Japanese food in spacious atmosphere

By tyonyc |

We had a omakase course dinner at the counter that overlooks cooking area. Each dish of the multi course dinner tasted as good as it looks. Japanese cuisine with some subtle twists here and there. The space is lofty and spacious with the double height ceiling. The atmosphere is dark and dramatic.
