Hidden Gem

I can always count on good food and service at this restaurant on the upper level of a market. We usually go here for brunch but adding a grandchild to the mix changed our dining times.

Phenomenal Dinner!

By Elizabeth S |

I'd been to Fairway Cafe before for lunch, and it was PACKED. Weekends, whether you are shopping the market or dining upstairs, it's a madhouse. There was a long wait for folks who came after us, it gets very loud, but I always enjoyed the food. Then I found out they serve dinner. We went last night, and it was so good, it was ridiculous. AND since people were complaining about price, I'll say that they offer a prix fixe menu that includes an appetizer, main course and dessert -- which is a ton of extremely well-prepared food for a steal. I had the prosciutto and arugula salad to start -- the balsamic vinaigrette was like balsamic candy, it was so delicious. The prosciutto was excellent -- very little fat (my grandmother would say that I'm a heathen, that that's the best part, but I can't help it, I find it gross). My partner had the burrata and tomatoes with the same balsamic glaze. The tomatoes were fresh and sweet, and the burrata was fresh and the perfect consistency. She got the spaghetti bolognese, which I tasted, and which I thought was outstanding. I had the Chicken Murray? Murphy?, which is one of their signature dishes. Absolutely delicious. It came with roasted vegetables -- including carrots, which I don't know that I've ever had roasted, and they were amazing. The sauce was wonderful -- could have used a bit more -- but it was all so flavorful. Dessert? Yellow cake, chocolate icing. Birthday cake. Yup. And it was a real treat. Our server was extremely nice and very knowledgeable. We had a nice relaxed pace, a truly perfect dinner.

Hidden gem

By WYbirdwatcher |

Hidden away on the second floor of the grocery store. We ate lunch at about 1 pm. The Cobb Salad was just right in the way of quantity. The frittata was more than adequate. Fresh ingredients in a grocery store known for its organics. Mexican Coca-Cola in bottles. At night, the café is reinvented as a steakhouse. Much more pricey at night, since the menu favors steak dinners and no light items.

An Upper West Side Embarassment: Why Do They Even Bother to Keep it Open?

By tuckernyc2003 |

My friends and I have been going to Fairway Cafe for many years, and we've seen it go steadily downhill, with both food and service reaching new lows. The pizzas are watery, the burgers tasteless, and the service so dilatory and lackadaisical as to drive you mental. To be fair, the breakfasts are usually o.k., but avoid dinner at all costs. A few years ago, there were rumors that it was closing and the neighborhood clamored for it to stay open. In retrospect, if should have closed. I now refuse to go there.

Hidden gem!

By Lcl2000 |

We stumbled upon this gem while exploring the Fairway Market across from our hotel! It is on the second floor of the market, and yes they have elevators! They serve brunch as well. Sitting by the Windows overlooking Broadway, we ate dinner there one night and I had steak and fries which were extremely tasty. My husband had lump crab cakes with huge lumps of crab and onion rings which he devoured and declared delicious! I wanted the crab cakes the next night so we returned and he had chicken pot pie which was ideal for that cold rainy night. The pie came out with a beautiful fluffy pastry topping a mixture of chicken breast and fresh veggies in cream sauce! The chef came out to ask how he liked it since he was first to order it, and heard praise from my husband.

They do it great

By brooklinerob |

Great Value and what they do is done very well. It's on my regular list. Great for breakfast. I love the lardon salad soups and a very good burger and fries. Try the pre fix its a great value

Great lunch

By ALB |

Delicious and reasonably priced; service was very efficient despite the crowding at 1pm on a Saturday; convenient to Central Park and Lincoln center

Buy the ingredients and go home.

By 271kenneths |

Fairway is a world-class food store. Its café was once a great steakhouse. It has been downgraded and downgraded. I don't even go there for a cup of coffee these days. The food isn't very good, the seats are uncomfortable, the service is slow and unpleasant. Buy the great food downstairs and go home to cook yourself a great meal.

Great food, service iffy

By Nicknack51 |

Had brunch/lunch here last Sunday. Fabulous food with a very New York vibe. At the weekend, they serve a Mediterranean Plate to which you can add chicken, salmon or beef for an extra $5 or so. It was right up my strasse, loved it. Not that cheap (we had one course and a non-alcoholic drink each and with the tip, it was almost $60.00 which feels like a lot with £1.00 at $1.25) but very near to the hotel I was staying at, very casual and I just like it. Service wasn't great on the day I was there but then, it was chokka and we had to wait for a table. I'll be back there next time I'm in New York.

Goog Food

By greeneyes45 |

A good cafe where New Yorkers eat, breakfast with pancakes are a must, and at night it is a steak house.

Close to our home on the Upper West side

By terrypotts |

We had lunch one day and then returned another day for breakfast. Food was well prepared (hot things, that were supposed to be hot, were) and came out in a reasonable amount of time. Everything that was served to nearby tables looked nice.

Breakfast before leaving NYC

By GrandPaWalking |

The Cafe is on the 2nd floor of a local grocery store and also has a bakery too. The Nova was great and the service was quick and efficient. It seemed that this is a place the locals who live on the Upper East Side come for breakfast. Lot's of families here too.

Superb breakfast

By Bassoon11 |

Four of us met for breakfast at the cafe upstairs from Fairway. It was scrumptious and able to cater for our various tastes and quirks. The sprouts and butternut squash stir fry was delicious, as were the waffles with berries. Yum yum, we'll be back. Great quick service, no frills but excellent to set you up for the day. We'll be back.

excellent deal roomy place

By burgundio |

upstairs by the market there's this great room quiet with cood classic breakfast at excellent proces and friendly personnel

A surprise!

By Michelle |

This upstairs cafe serves a great menu for breakfast and lunch. The spacious, open dining room is inviting and seating is usually available. A nice surprise tucked into Fairways on the Upper West Side!

Lousy Breakfast Service! Food was Good!

By parisienfoodisgood |

We enjoy shopping at Fairway Market and have been impressed with the overall quality products and employee interactions. Thus, we expected the same from Fairway Cafe. We were sorely disappointed. The breakfast was good but the service was terrible. Please spend a little more time checking on your customers and less time chatting over the water cooler!!

Suprise

By realtoreaston |

Great value and delicious food. Perfectly cooked schnitzel. The 3 course meal is a real bargain with large portions and a great price. Desserts were great too

Great breakfast!

By Elizabeth R |

Had breakfast here twice and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were staying at the Hotel Beacon across the road so Fairways was very handy for us.

Good place to grab a bite to eat

By Tasha S |

Came here based on a recommendation and was not disappointed. Had a steak sandwich and the lemonade. Lemonade could have been a little sweeter for my liking but overall a nice meal.

Excellent brunch option!

By surf_golf |

We really enjoyed our visit to 74th St Cafe. The brunch was delicious and the service was excellent. Highly recommended.

Fairway Market Cafe

By Lin8486 |

We looked round this fab fresh food market. Upstairs we found a great café as used by the locals. It serves food all day having lunch menus mid afternoon menus and evening menus. We had mid afternoon. I had a great burger and my daughter had a super salad with a cola float and home made scrummy deserts. It is very reasonably priced here. I noticed that they sere lobsters in the evening and have live music nights. It is a good place to eat clean and non touristy.

Next door to Hotel Beacon

Steps from Hotel Beacon. Good place for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Pleasant service. Breakfast good and also sandwiches for lunch

any time of day

By royaloakmichael |

I have eaten great breakfast there, particularly the bagels and lox. Their suppers were excellent as well.

Good value, good food and convenient.

By PrinceConsort |

This restaurant is on the second floor of the Fairway market on Broadway...on the same floor as the organic food section. Very convenient if you are going to be shopping in Fairway anyway. I have had lunch here twice in the last couple of weeks. A cajun chicken sandwich the first time, a salad nicoise the second. Both were very good and reasonably priced...$10 -$12 for most entrées. Service is just OK, and the café is not fancy, but it is popular and well worth a visit if you are looking for a decent meal in this neighborhood.

Great place to have breakfast or lunch

By BeeGeerj5 |

We went for breakfast. Food very creative, fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is very appealing above the large grocery market. Loved the energy of the place.

Unfortunately it's Gone Downhill

By William G |

Went there for Brunch one day before Mother's Day. Got there at 11:30am and the host sat us promptly and immediately gave us menus and asked if we'd like to begin with coffee. So far, perfect! Then our waiter came over, moving at the speed of an injured turtle. He could not have been more slow and less attentive, not to mention uncaring, hard of hearing and obviously not in need of any tips. Our order was given within five minutes of being seated, which should have been encouraging, unfortunately, the food didn't arrive for 20 minutes and it was completely incorrect on all accounts, cold and included bacon on top of my girl friends pancakes and cold scrambled eggs. (she's vegetarian, kosher, ordered eggs over easy, not scrambled and didn't order toast, even though it arrived on the plate) My breakfast was cold, hard and uneatable scrambled eggs as well as cold greasy bacon. Even an inexperienced waiter would have looked at this unappealing plate of food and refused to bring it out to the table. I tried to get his attention for almost 5 minutes to ask him to bring us something eatable but he wasn't to be found. The manager was seating people and extremely busy so we couldn't bother him. I was confident that our waiter would show eventually and fix the problem. I was wrong. I gave up, looked at my display plate of cold hardened food and finally, after 8 minutes (I timed it) another waiter came to the table and asked us if we wanted anything else. I was about to tell him the problem when my girlfriend blurted out, just give us the check and let us get out of here. NORMALLY, the waiter would have picked up on our moods, tone of voice and untouched food on the plate and asked what the problem was. Instead, he took the plates and put down the check. $27.00, not including tip. BTW, our coffee was luke warm from the moment it hit the cup, the one time he filled it. I have bragged about this place for years. I have never had a bad meal at Fairways Café. I have never had terrible service and an uncaring staff. I was embarrassed more than angry. Wrong order, terrible food and unbelievably lazy service. That's my review. We went to Zabar's, grabbed a bagel and coffee and sat outside on a bench and enjoyed the young couples holding hands and smiling.

Hidden gem uptown Broadway

By 23NYC |

On the second floor of the iconic Fairway Market [more like FoodWORLD] on Broadway and 74th Street in Manhattan is this little treasure of a restaurant, Fairway Cafe...service was great, comparable prices, relaxing atmosphere.....and the food? delicious! We had a scrumptious lobster salad platter, exceptional watermelon lemonade(!), lip-smackin' buttermilk chicken-n-waffles, and KILLER pecan and key lime pies for dessert! We will DEFINITELY be returning to Fairway Cafe!!!

Welcome addition to the UWS

By SCOBAR123 |

Fairway is already a great place to do your grocery (especially organic) shopping--but the upstairs cafe serves terrific breakfast and lunch---and if your day starts a bit late, you can breakfast AT lunch! Pizzas are the crispy, thin-crust variety, with fresh toppings; burgers and fries (with a thick black&white milkshake, perhaps?), salads---all are terrific. Save room for a great tarte tatin, vanilla meringue layer cake, or the spectacularly fresh crullers. Not cheap, but very easy on the wallet.

after a climb

By 295kkohn |

The Fairway Cafe has access (which it uses!) to very fine groceries and coffees and super fresh eggs which the actual market downstairs provides. Accordingly, the food is excellent. A lackluster staff is a disadvantage, as is the long flight of stairs to get there. An elevator from downstairs is very difficult to find!

Very good value and great service

By philmt2016 |

We recently stayed at the Hotel Beacon and right across the road was the amazing Fairway market and above it, the Fairway Cafe. Very good food, great service and a very pleasant atmosphere.

Upstairs from the original Fairway market.

By Passenger605330 |

A great place to eat before going across the street to see a show at the Beacon theatre. Great selection of fresh food, wonderful selection of steaks, chops and fish.

Good option for breakfast

By IvyNYC |

Surprisingly good food for a spot tucked in the upstairs of this grocery. They have some good breakfast items. The food is uneven and the service is not very reliable. If you want to have a casual place to read while eating, this is a good spot.

Good fare but got there just before closing for renovations

By Rheinland-Cleveland |

Went with a neighborhood friend who swears this place has the best burgers on the Upper West Side. Soup and Pizza were all served warm and very tasty. The Cafe closed the next day for a full renovation so im not sure when it opens again (Spring 2019). The supermarket is also the best place to get so many fresh foods in varieties unknown in most supermarkets.

Smoked salami on a bagel is speechless!

By XandeOnMove |

I had a chance to try this place while waiting for a friend. Me and my ladies enjoyed a light 5 o'clock sandwiches that are served at this place. Portions are big and more than enough. The place is not posh or alike, however, if you want to eat delicious food -- highly recommended. Smoked salmon on a bagel is speechless!

Superb service & food

By magugs14 |

My wife and I are regulars here. Ever time we go out we compare restaurants to this place. The food is always amazing, the service is top-notch & personable. The manager, Kaysh, pays attention to it all. Additionally the entire menu is moderately priced. We love this local gem!

Good, dependable, reasonable

By GrammaShelly |

Another must on the upper west side! We always eat here when we shop in the fabulous supermarket downstairs. Probably no tourists here; it is a New Yorkers' place. Great for breakfast, lunch, never tried dinner. I would not rate the food gourmet, but rather a good eat at a fair price. Usually the soups are great......and the bread - wow. Nice cobb salad. Definitely worth a visit when you are hungry and doing errands in the neighborhood.

Newly remodeled and very disappointing

By RulaNYC |

I've always enjoyed the upstairs Cafe for a quick coffee or a long chatty brunch or lunch. However, after anticipating a visit to the newly remodeled cafe, I can only say it was a big let down. Charm of the cozy brick oven used to be up front at the counter. Now it's placed way in the back and patrons can barely see it. Glass and steel re-do just feels like every other deli now. Service was horrible. The resentful waitress charged us for something we did not order, never filled our water glasses without us having to ask. Orders very slow in coming out. Cappuccinos are now is smaller mugs for the same price. Ambiance warmth is completely gone. Loud cafeteria sounds bounce making it hard to hear across the table. Had to ask for the check after a long wait. We regulars will now be finding another place to hang.

Great cafe!

By Barganax |

Ok, it's a café above a busy supermarket and will not have a great ambiance. But the place is spotless and the service quick. The food is simple and in manageable proportions. Too many New York Cafes seem to serve huge and calorie loaded portions. Here we ate omelettes and Mrs Barganax loved the fresh fruit granola. No fuss, good food and on with your day!

We got a insiders tip

By Robert R |

My partner and I were looking at the menu of a restaurant near the Beacon hotel on Broadway when a lady walking by stopped and pointed across the road to the upstairs of the Fairway store. She said it had very good food at good prices. Given she was a local we took her advice and do not regret it. When we eventually found the entrance, it was all locals inside, a good sign. It has nice varied menu with different price ranges. We opted for a steak and it came out perfect with sublime mash wit it. Service was efficient and friendly. Next time I am in the area I will dine there again.

Pity about The Service

By Beps51 |

Food quite good but restaurant could do with a Complete Makeover. One particular member of the staff seemed to nor care about his work. He literally dumped food in Front of us which was not for our table. When our own food did come along the wrong food was put in front of each of us. Not a big deal as we only had to exchange to each other.

Steakhouse in the evening, great burgers any time.

By hopfrog |

For those not in the know, Fairway was the among the finest of NYC purveyors of fruits and vegetables into, say, the '90s. They still are, but since then they have expanded and now have very good fish and meat departments. Also cheese. They also opened a restaurant on the second floor, which is the subject of the review du jour. You can get a burger any time they're open, or a sandwich, or a salad, or even just coffee and dessert; but after 5:30 PM they add steak to the menu. We showed up at 5:10 PM, too early for steak. I got a burger, which was really excellent and worth the four-star rating. My wife got a turkey burger, which was dry and unappetizing, but then again so is every turkey burger I've ever heard of. Ordering a turkey burger is its own punishment, so I can't deduct any stars for that. I ordered my burger rare, and it came that way. (Hooray.) You can pick your toppings; I got only grilled onions. It always comes with a small order of cole slaw and, on the side, lettuce, raw onion, tomatoes and a pickle. We got the Key lime pie for dessert. It was way too sweet. Soggy crust and a very small layer of Key lime filling under the meringue. If you go, order something else. (Or, if you really want Key lime pie, try the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station.) But definitely do come here for the burger . They also make an honest cuppa coffee, and, by the way, the price is right. I classified it as mid-range in price, but let's say it's down at the low end of mid-range in that regard. It's an excellent value for the food. Service is mediocre. I will come back for a steak sometime.

paid $28 for the Scallop & shrimp dinner , all I got was 1 Shrimp & 3 Small Scallops for $28 . will never go back there again

Fantastic breakfast

By Paul L |

What a great place to go for breakfast and brunch. Our party of 6 ordered a wide range of items from the menu, pancakes, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, bacon, sausage and all were served to perfection. A great local establishment with humble surroundings but a great atmosphere. Coffee and service was great.

Super Good Food!

By Kelley B |

This place was a great find! I did not expect some awesome food from a grocery store cafe but was pleasantly surprised! We go "the great corn Julio" pizza (if you get the reference you know why I needed to order it) some beers and needed with amazing pie. So glad we found this place!

A little inflexibility with your breakfast

By trvlin_man |

Went to Fairway for breakfast with two companions. They had been rated one of the top 10 places to eat on the UWS, and it's mostly locals that eat there. We're not huge breakfast eaters, but were looking forward to trying the place for the first time. It looked nice, was quiet and a private place to enjoy a meal and talk a bit. Our waitress, who seems to either not like her job or just took an immediate dislike to us for some unknown reason. The problems: - One companion asked if she could have the chorizo, but not mixed with eggs (there was a dish with chorizo and scrambled eggs). No, that was impossible (not really sure why they can't fry up some chorizo without adding the eggs, but ok, fine). - Then a request was made for some fried eggs, sunny side up. Apparently this is also impossible, because the chef must serve them "easy over", or fried on both sides. And now the waitress is looking exasperated with us also. So we will skip that item also, only one of the most common breakfast items there is. The chef can't prevent himself from flipping the eggs over? Some kind of mental syndrome? - We order coffee. Two of us get our coffee in a few minutes. The third is waiting and waiting. She had ordered a Cafe Americano, basically an espresso with extra water. More time goes by. Finally I politely ask if we would get that Americano, and she barks at me that they are busy (I would point out it's nearly 10am and only three tables are occupied. - So I order a ham and cheese omelette. Again, a pretty easy order. I think at this point we're all wondering why we are at this cafe. My order comes. The eggs are covered with herbs. This is not looking like what I asked for. Yes, there is no ham in this omelette. She brought me an "herb and cheese omelette". Do they really seem or sound the same to you? After all the fun we have had so far, I really didn't want any more drama, so I just ate it. It was ok, but not what I had ordered. The check came. On it, in bold lettering, was "a 20% tip is appreciated". Yeah, right. What chutzpah. Not exactly. Won't be back. Fairway, you have a lousy waitress who is destroying your business.

Enjoyed the Meal for reasonable price

By Cruiseman2014 |

Stopped here for breakfast with my family. This cafe is above the grocery store. The breakfast was outstanding and for a good price, service was quite good and would definitely go back. The Fairway Market is also a nice experience to visit and look for food treasures you wouldn't find anywhere else.

Great place for breakfast, lunch and dinner along with the best food shopping.

By Regkv |

We always stay at the Beacon Hotel when in New York and right opposite is a great fresh food shop with café on the 1st floor. The customers vary from businessmen in for a quick coffee and bagel to families with young children so all are welcome. Breakfast offers a vast selection of typical American dishes including a great selection of fresh fruit, (there is also a great selection of fruit juices). Everything is cooked as you would like it. This is not a posh place but is clean and friendly. Get a table by the window and watch the world go by. Taxis constantly make pick ups of locals as they exit with a large quantity of bags, obviously the place to shop. The shop it is one of the best in New York for fresh produce, be it meat, fish or veggies, there is even a coffee counter selling a big range of fresh beans. Food is served all day with dinner served on white table covers with white napkins. As with breakfast there is a large and comprehensive menu.

Great pancakes - recommended by a local

By Helen0002 |

We were looking for the classic Amercian pancakes for breakfast whilst in New York and were told about this place by a New Yorker. Doesn't look much from the outside, it's located above the supermarket but we all agreed fantastic pancakes for breakfast along with lots of locals who obviously all agree!!! Great find, definitely recommend.

Great Food, Great Service, Great Find

By Arie K |

On a recent trip, while staying across the street at the Hotel Beacon, we stumbled across this café above the Fairway. Light and airy, with terrific service and a good menu, the Café became our breakfast place of choice. Saw lots of locals and few tourists at this excellent restaurant.

Pretty good

By Monica S |

The breakfast portion is huge for the price. Loved the bacon. Not a fan of the potatoes or eggs. The Turkey club sandwich was good but different with real Turkey versus lunchmeat Turkey on the sandwich.

Good Deals and Fresh Food

By jknows |

The chefs walk downstairs and pick up what they need. Vegetables, meats, fish, etc. For me though, the price is right. $12. For a french tuna salad loaded on the plate with lots of good stuff. Pleasant servers are nice to have around as well. Going for breakfast in AM.

Breakfast

By lisaonbreak |

Just wonderful. Tasty, large serving, great coffee ( hard to find in the U.S ) and good price. The decor is quite trendy as well. Warm feeling when you walk in.

A nice place to eat in the Upper West Side...

By Kristy C |

During my recent stay at the Hotel Beacon, I ate at the Fairway Café three times. Each time was a pleasant experience. The Café was never too crowded, so we could sit right away. Our waiter, Tomas, was wonderful (we had him twice!). The pancakes, bacon, and fresh-squeezed orange juice were delicious for breakfast, and the BLT was a nice, quick lunch. I will definitely return the next time I'm in the UWS.

A nice but expensive place

By LBrettas |

Fairway Cafe is a nice place with good options for a quick lunch or to enjoy a espresso. However, the service has much room for improvements and the premium price for the coffee is unjustifiable.

Yum

By Elizabeth L |

Had a great lunch here. Very reasonable prices for NYC. Hot honey chicken sandwich was really good. White fish salad was plentiful but a bit too many onions.

Good food experience, but service is so-so

By roogirl1978 |

Nice dinner selections. Enjoyed the food experience! Waiter, however, had to be prompted waaay too many times about my order. He seemed to be flitting all over the place, not servicing his assigned tables. I had to prompt him to pick up my entree which I saw the kitchen had placed on the pick-up line 5 minutes before I could flag him down. I ordered the price-fixe dinner which included dinner. As he presented my check for payment, I reminded him that I should get dessert....and had to physically stop him from picking up my paid tab until I got it delivered. Sheeesh!

Awesome

By Karen M |

Loved everything food is excellent huge portions very busy Wednesday night is jazz night so don't risk it & book a table. Thomas & crystal are two of the most lovely people I've met, Thomas is "fluffy" he says lol wish we had this cafe at home :((

Great breakfast

By Kevin M |

Much improved from our most recent visit last year. Apparently there's a new chef in residence and the food really reflects that. Also prices seem a bit cheaper.

Great place for breakfast when shopping @ the Fairway Grocery store

By TShed |

The breakfast menu is great! Lots of interesting egg dishes. Large open seating with plenty of room. The staff is very friendly. We will be back to visit soon!

Nice resterant across the road of the beacon shows.

By Johan O |

If you are going to watch a broadway show at the beacon, then this is the perfect resterant, clean premises, very helpful staff( we shifted are table twice without a problem), nice menu, my wife had the ribs and I had the seafood spagety both where excellent, I also had an interesting beer( $ 9.00) but worth it , we where able to take away the ribs because the serve was large, much appreciated.

A Very Nice Surprise!

By SHM1776 |

This cafe is above an upscale grocer and overall is quite special. Breakfast was outstanding. We were back a second time and enjoyed outstanding pizzas and good salad. Service is Ok, staff are very friendly, and it was not noisy, not an easy feat in NYC! Definitely worth a try.

Fairway Cafe a NYC hidden gem

By Luke T |

I wanted a casual place to eat something light before a 2 hour Shaping Sound show across the street at the Beacon. The food was terrific (winter salad, spaghetti squash pomodoro, and pizza) and the wait staff (Ariel) was both friendly and attentive. I will return.

Nice cafe above Fairway grocery store

By joaniemaria |

What a pleasant cafe above the Fairway grocery store! We ate here three times during our stay across the street at Hotel Beacon. Excellent breakfast food! Fresh fruit plate was lovely. I had it twice! The pies and desserts were fresh and delicious, along with great cup of coffee. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, are all reasonably priced and fresh! Service is friendly and efficient.

Nice enough without any wow factor

By McConnkings |

We ate here one night with our 6 and 3 year old. Choices for children were very limited (they had pizza) and food was solid without being amazing. The Prix Fixe menu was good value and dessert (apple tart/icecream sundaes) was the highlight.

There’s an elevator

By Tricia F |

I took my friend to breakfast. As we walked past the grocery store and asked where the café was they said turn right at the door and take the stairs. Since one of us had a cane we were a little concerned. We made it up the stairs and had very unmemorable breakfast with terrible coffee. Scrambled eggs, the brussels sprouts breakfast, Irish oatmeal we shared and two coffees for 40 bucks with tip. When we left we asked about an elevator. We had to ask three people because nobody would show us where it was directly. Then we couldn’t find the hidden button to call the elevator. It took two people show us that. I would’ve given them two stars for bad food which was edible But look like a pile of garbage on the plate. Service, what service? The one star would have been appropriate even if the food was great because there is no excuse for telling somebody with a cane to take the stairs. I was embarrassed for taking my friend there. OK that’s it I’m done honey heading in this

Mitch is no more.

By Gorskiworski |

Sadly, the Fairway Cafe is no more run by the great chef Michel London. After several months of giving the new guy a try, we must conclude that it's not so great at the Cafe anymore. Presided over by a tall scowling eminence, who, white-aproned, lurks in the kitchen peering out, or in the corners of the place. Many of the old waitstaff still work on the day shift - the night is populated with scurrying snarky morons - ask for well done, you get rare. send it back, it comes back incinerated - ask for whatever, you get the opposite. The quality of the Day Food is still good; the night is execrable. Day waiter folk are mostly fine; the night folks tend to be rude. O Mitch (Michell) come back, come back - your legacy here has been spoiled.

decent food with preposterously arrogant pretentious serivce

By Landmarkfinder A |

sometimes one gets to experience first hand the benefits of good management and the consequences of poor leadership -- hard to fathom how a fabulous emporium like Fairway could have a wonderful cafe on the second floor of its upper West Side Broadway store with such poor service -- almost without exception -- scratch that, without exception -- every single server, cashier, person behind the bakery counter, was rude, curt, patronizing, nasty -- happily we did not take it personally as we saw other guests treated the same way -- it made for great comedy -- hopefully the management will sit where we sat on a Sunday afternoon and ask themselves why people are so short tempered! in any event, it's a shame because the kitchen turns out terrific brunches -- maybe they should come out and do the serving as well!

Without much interest

Very American. Acceptable salads. Sad environment. Friendly and efficient service. High prices like everywhere in New York

A true neighborhood hangout but great for tourists and families

By Zzardvark |

The Fairway Cafe above the eponymous grocery store is a true neighborhood hangout. You'll see France's McDormand there when she's in residence. But if you're a tourist staying in one of the neighborhood hotels or a family with kids, this is a great place to go. It doesn't look like much as you walk up the stairs by the supermarket checkout but a number of food critics consider it one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood. The prix fixe choices are a great way to go at dinner and the food is great for any meal of the day. Many love the pancakes for breakfast but I go for the lox eggs and onions. For dinner, the roast chicken may sound boring but is great. The one issue has always been the wait staff. Order quickly and if you need anything, you need to look for your waiter and grab them the minute you see them. Also, get tables by the Windows, if you can and if you're seated by a table of kids and you don't want the noise, ask for a different seat.

Excellent breakfast

By Daniel S |

Easily missed while walking up Broadway in the Upper East Side, unless you know where to look. Superb breakfast - chicken and waffles is a highlight. Highly recommended

great to stock up for your stay

By diannej351 |

we purchased groceries, food and other items here for our stay in a local hotel, great range, very very busy but great.

Getting better, was once great

By Jackmac12013 |

Good simple food at high prices. A great space, patronized 9less frequently) by couples old and new, singles, families, you name it. Sandwiches, salads, desserts, omlettes, breakfast, lunch - and at nite turns into a whit tablecloth and candles atmosphery steakhouse. Wines, beers. It was once run by the great Michel London, and in those days everything was grrrreat. Now the mighty have fallen, and while the waitstaff - what is left of them - struggle mightily, it aint what it once was.

Top Floor Dining

By Sassamatt |

White napkin service, subdued atmosphere and great menu that combines the excellent Fairway deli downstairs and chef prepared meals. An excellent selection of burgers and exhaustive list of vegetables give a feel of fine dining and a home cooked meal. I opted for a mediterranean platter with four sides and an added side of chicken, which was well prepared and tender. my dining partner opted for a truffle burger: a generous medium rare burger with a rich mushroom sauce as well as all the toppings that o on burgers. you won't leave hungry after a meal at Fairway Cafe.

Great food, great service

By KJDbiz1 |

Ok I love this place on its worst day, full disclosure. Always great food a Mecca of great value in a city of overpriced prissy food. Today my husband and I came for lunch at lunchtime argh. Table of kids close by double argh. Sonia, The young lady who was our waitress handled about 10 tables including some very annoyed and complaining couples about the delay in the food arrival, with patience and good cheer. Always a great wine value, I think the best burgers in the city for $10 compared to $18 anywhere else. My husband had Lox and Salmon and declared it fabulous. We finished with cappuccino and a slice of fresh peach blueberry pie à la mode. Wonderful lunch for 62 bucks. Sounds a lot but a bargain in the city.

Great food and service

By ronco0807 |

Met an out-of-town friend for breakfast. The cafe is located on the second floor of this famous NY grocery. Breakfasts are great. Wonderful bagels, lox, whitefish salad and all the typical breakfast foods. Also soups, salads, sandwiches and pizza for lunch. Service is great, it's friendly\, fast and professional.

lunch yesterday (3/7/16) w/ visiting friend; other friends stopped by to say hello

By AWAmes |

One of the friends, a former New Yorker, has lived in Hamburg, Germany for many years, but he ALWAYS has a meal or two @ Fairway when he visits. WE ALL LOVE FAIRWAY! In fact, after a doctor's appt this morning on the far East side, I'll seek out the single Fairway "over there" for a snack to get me home!

Good breakfast

By GeorgieB56 |

Had a very pleasant and filling breakfast with unlimited coffee. Bill for 3 plus tip came to $50. Excellent service and view onto Broadway.

A market and cafe with everything, right on Broadway.

By Puffy19 |

Fairway has anything and everything you could think of to eat. Fresh convenient, tasty. We bought fruit, salads, dairy, sushi and much more.

Dinner

By Barbara A |

Service was not very good. Waitress disappeared halfway through dinner. Noise level was high. Food was not cooked as requested, and substitutions were made without informing us. Food was bland and uninteresting.

Surprisingly good

By Batch |

Above a supermarket is not where I expected to find a great restaurant but here it is. There is loads of choice, the pizzas are particularly excellent, and the prices are reasonable. The desserts are great too.

Good Value and Quick

By Lindsay R |

The Fairway Cafe takes a little bit of finding as it is above Fairway Mart on Broadway. The food is good value and the range good for a quick meal or snack and the staff friendly. My wife still talks about how much she enjoyed the cherry pie. However we were really impressed with the Fairway supermarket underneath, which is directly across the road from The Beacon Hotel on Broadway. Fairway has a broad range of quality food, especially fresh fruit, vegetables and cheeses. We also liked their baguettes. As soon as staff realised we were from Australia they very friendly and enthusiastic and made us feel very welcome.

Fairway Market and Cafe have done way downhill

By CyrilBeardsall |

Not only have Fairway Market and Cafe deteriorated, they try to cheat you with sales. You enter your insider number and it won't give you the sale price. Customer service is non-existent, though if you do ask a question, you'll be met with a rude response.

Breakfast was great but you may have a wait for lunch once you place your order

By colden197 |

Had lunch here with some girl friends. We only had an hour as we were on break from a seminar across the street at a Hotel. When one gal ordered her burger she was told it would be about 15-20 minutes as it is quite large and by law they have to cook it a certain way. She opted instead for a salad. I got the pizza (just cheese on it) and the other gal a tuna melt. The salad came out first but it was still a 15 minute wait for it. Next the melt and finally my pizza. Had to hurry through lunch and doggie bag my pizza and friends salad. Nice enough wait staff and pleasant surroundings but I would have to know how long to wait for my lunch from time of order to on the table as we were not prepared for the wait.

Huge surprise; so good

By julesofthesea |

Not the usual breakfast. Shredded Brussels sprouts, sweet potato, egg with creme freche. Soooo good. Home-made breads. French press coffee. Upstairs over Fairway Market. Fun, friendly. Great market, too.

Satisfying Stop Worth the Climb

By MertonCapeCod |

There's an elevator but it took us a few visits before we found it. In the meantime we enjoyed breakfast and dinner here while staying at the Hotel Beacon across the street. Wonderful sour cream waffles, crispy bacon and home fries in the morning. Saturday night roast beef roasted to perfection for the picky carnivore. Rare it was! Highly recommend!

Good breaky

By travelling_sister |

I ordered the bagel with fried eggs and bacon. It was simple but still tasty. My friend had the Shakshuka which was also tasty. The service was quiet fast but the waiters could do with a bit more enthusiasm.

Amazing Breakfast

By GCheek |

The scrambled egg, spinach and chorizo is to die for! Fast and very friendly staff and in an amazing location!

Convenient Location to Hotel Beacon

By Jaye11D |

We had a quick bite to eat on 12/30/16. Not much for someone that is Gluten Free. Please consider offering Gluten Free bread/rolls. The split pea soup that I ordered was very watery and no peas. Disappointed. However, the others in the group ordered burgers and they enjoyed them.

Whatever Happened to Fairway

By inas702 |

For all the beautiful food downstairs, the food in the upstairs cafe has taken a serious downtick. The squash soup arrived lukewarm. And bland. The brisket sandwich was one sorry slice of greasy meat, heaped with potato chips (in the sandwich), some limp salad, and the horseradish sauce a glob in the middle. Takes some chutzpah to serve brisket like this in Manhattan.

It's okay

By Ichaso17 |

I've always wanted this place to be great but in the end it is average. The breakfast is okay and they make you stick exactly to the menu. Not fun. It always crowded and the seating is tight. I have always felt uncomfortable here though many of my friends love it. It never felt that it was about the food but about getting you in and getting you out. This is unfortunate as this is a great location and attached to the world famous Fairway market. What can I say. It is worth going there once.

Many gluten free and vegetarian options

By Cheriejay |

i never would have eaten here had it not been for my sister and mother. I would have never believed the grocery store "deli" /slash tea room would be any good. Turns out it was excellent. I had the spinach and Brie crepes and it was gooey gooey deliciousness. I also ordered a side of bacon that was very generous and crisp to perfection. The desserts, tarts and quiches looked amazing. Sadly, I didn't make it back this trip but hope to next time.

Lunch upstairs great NYC grocery store.

By Journeyman644 |

Best bagel and shmear ever. No matzoh ball soup the day we visited. Excellent salad and sandwich. No NYC visit complete unless we get to visit here. Then Be sure and visit Century 21 a few blocks from here. It is the best clothing shopping to schlep all over New York. It is much better than the one located on the east side. Great neighborhood. Great food.

Must eat restaurant for breakfast on every visit to New York

By Mark W |

We skipped a free continental breakfast each day to eat here. It is excellent. The food is phenomenal and well worth any short wait. The service is quick and attentive.

An institution

By iphonenyc |

I think the cafe is best for breakfast, others like the steak dinners. Regardless, its a good medium priced place. I will admit it has lost some charm with the departure of Mitchell London who ruled the roost from a table in the front. Still, very much recommended.

2nd Level Cafe

By SAS |

Reliable upper west side cafe. Opposite The Beacon Hotel. Great value for breakfast. Good range to choose from. Plenty of good food shopping downstairs.

A Great Dining Experience Minutes From Lincoln Center

By Arthur G |

Who would imagine that on the second floor of Fairway Market, almost hidden from the Heath Food Section of the store, is an elegantly staffed restaurant with a great wine list, professional waiters and a great selection of dinners, salads and hamburgers! My wife and I were looking for a quiet dining environment before going to Lincoln Center but every restaurant we checked out was booked. By chance I recalled that Fairway Market had a cafe in their store but I had never checked it out. I walked into their very busy and crowded market, inquired where the cafe might be, was shown to the elevator and stairs and after arriving at the entrance was blown away by how lovely the dining area was! Overlooking Broadway, with a courteous staff, I was informed that they do not take reservations but although my wife wasn’t expected for another half hour, I should chose where I’d like like to sit and make myself comfortable. I chose a table by a window overlooking Broadway and marveled at this elegant dining area. When my wife arrived, we laughed at discovering such a wonderful restaurant that might be the best kept secret in New York City! We had a wonderful dinner and it was reasonable too!

Quintessential Upper West Side

By friedkin |

This is by no means a "destination restaurant" but for those who already know it, it has a new young chef and is only better. The pizza rab too much for one? is one of the best. The kitchen is very accommodating. Their pancakes, among the world's best. Their gluten free items like pancakes or buckwheat crepes with all sorts of fillings are superb. The place rocks. Hidden upstairs (only 1 flight of stairs & there IS an elevator) in a quintessential upper west side produce market slash supermarket slash health food store slash organic produce market.

A Neighborhood Staple

By gocats89 |

My wife, daughters 10 and 8 and I have lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. Ok, my daughters have not, but my wife and I have. Fairway Cafe is one of our "go to" restaurants for breakfast or a impromptu dinner at a restaurant. Breakfast is good. It's much better during the week, when things are happening at a leisurely pace. During the weekend, things can get crazy, when families with kids take over the joint. I recommend getting there before 9. The food is standard breakfast fare...omelettes, pancakes, eggs and the like. Everything is fresh, as you can imagine it would be at Fairway. The pancakes are silver dollar sized, thin and moist. The food comes out a bit slow at times but it is worth the wait. Coffee, whether you get the French press or regular, is pretty decent. Prices are high if you are not from NY but normal for NYC residents. There is a different vibe at dinner. Selection varies by season. Some of the staples include steaks, burgers, chicken Milanese, salmon. As with breakfast, the food is fresh as can be. The roasted vegetables are a good starter as is the smoked salmon with black bread and Boston lettuce. There is a small wine list but it is very reasonably priced and of decent quality. You typically have the option of having a prix fixe menu. When I do the math it is a good deal if you include a more expensive starter and/or entree. I don't typically eat dessert, so when I get the fixed price meal I tend to eat a lot more than normal. The meals also come with fresh bread. Service at the Fairway Cafe is friendly but slow. You can typically show up at dinner and get a table. This is not the case on weekend mornings. Eating here also affords you the benefit of dashing through the market to buy provisions for the week. This is a solid choice for a meal.

A spot even some seasoned New Yorkers have overlooked

By mario g |

Fairway is a very well known vegetable/grocery store on the Upper West side." People come from far away locations to do their shopping there. The reasons? The bounty and variety of foods and the good prices. What however people often overlook is the small cafe on the second floor For breakfast and lunch, it towers over the competition. The first time I took some Europeans friends there for hamburgers, they were amazed - so.." that's what a real hamburger tastes like. Superb" was their comment.

A good light lunch - good service - short but interesting menu but we were there for a light holdover lunch Not inexpensive but not too dear either

Love the Fairway. We have not been in a couple of years. Wonderful brunch and service. Renovation is excellent.

Great breakfast

By Andrew |

Visited here whilst staying at Hotel Beacon opposite the store and cafe upstairs. Very good breakfast staff very attentive and polite .

A gem.

By Schwabcycler |

You might not expect a supermarket's second floor cafe, situated, right near the organic veggie bins, to be top notch. But this one will surprise. So the ambience might not excite, the plain sit down 2x2 tables might not impress and the bustling atmosphere might not foretell, but this is a gem that has been a stalwart for years. Fairway's Upstairs Cafe can be relied on to serve excellent, fare at excellent prices; and two of it's standard entrees really cannot be exceeded anywhere: whole branzino and 1/2 roast chicken. The burgers and pizza are also great. Enjoy.

Top breakfast

By Suzannah H |

Brilliant place, no frills but great staff and exceptional food. Variety of bagels, good coffee and good range of breakfast options.

Great menus, many options!

By glunardi |

So obvious, the primary reason you would ever go to Fairway is grocery shop of course. But here, you can get great table service dinner. And it is all good. At this point I think I've almost tried everything they make. And it's all good. Their prix fixe menus are a great way to go, and the specials are always worth considering. Next time you find yourself on the Upper West Side, and in need of a couple of organic apples, stop by Fairway for a meal while at it.

Worth a trip

By mahler5 |

This is one of my favorite spots for breakfast or lunch. It is ultra-casual and the food is wonderful. The service is extremely variable however. Yesterday I had a stack of pancakes for lunch. They were each about the thickness of a piece of paper and light as a feather. All combined, they probably had less batter than a single diner pancake. Considering this, they are overpriced, but extremely delicious nonetheless.

really handy deli/ foodstore with good pizza upstairs

By crazyed |

We stayed at the Beacon Hotel just across the road from Fairway and used it for our grocery shop during the stay. Pretty hectic and crowded but it had just about anything you could want, even Vegemite! Bagels were great and we ate upstairs twice, bit down market but after a hard days sightseeing pizza and beer were spot on. Nothing flash but certainly value for money. For those travellers from Sydney, think Norton St Grocer on steroids with a café upstairs...

Good experience

By Simon F |

Interesting, trendy decor, great menu and very pleasant service. Good vegetarian options and wine/beer list. Located above a famously well-stocked grocery store and right across the street from our hotel.

little gem upstairs

Great breakfasts, very good lunch, terrific apple cinnamon pie. Opens at 8 am. Breakfast served until 3 pm.

Perfekt breakfast

By hohygen |

After staying a few days at Beacon hotel as part of participating in New York Marathon did we go here for breakfast. We had pankakes and eggs with juice an Coffee. We had a fear of getting a ton of food, but the portion were just right, and it tasted great.

Good pancakes

By CappucinoPerthUK |

Had breakfast here and service was quick and efficient. Bacon really crispy, pancakes and maple syrup Price for three people around $50

Love this place (and the fries!!)

By d0ndequiera |

We always go to Fairway when we go to New York. The food is all really well prepared and very fresh. Service is friendly and pretty attentive for such a big place. There is a good variety of food - if you bring kids they will find something they like. Desserts are very good, and the fries? Oh, those fries are some of my favourite.

Step up from a diner, but not by much

By Tom M |

I shop at Fairway, and wanted to try the Cafe for dinner. My mistake. The waiters ranged from really nice to off putting. Pleasant informal ambiance. The food ranged from meh to pretty good. A little pricy for overall quality. Overall better than a diner but more expensive.

Just OK

By BeachyKeen909 |

Whatever you do, do not and I repeat DO NOT order the matzo ball soup. First they ran out of them and it was like eating pure salt. Horrible. The acorn squash soup was smoky and good. While there is was not busy and we had to wait a long while before our server appeared then quickly disappeared after taking our order. Would recommend you skip completely.

Great place to have breakfast with everything prepared fresh from Fairway Market

By Athansor27 |

We stay across the street from Fairway Market at the Hotel Beacon when we're visiting NYC and one of the perks is being able to get fresh everything at almost any time of day. Rather than eat take-out bagels and lox we decided to try the upstairs cafe and we're not disappointed. With everything offered super fresh from the downstairs market we had a great breakfast without having to wait too long. Do be prepared for a wait at peak times.

One of our Favorites on the Upper West Side

By Jim M |

OK, this is not a fancy place, but it's a great place for a laid-back lunch or dinner in a non-touristy environment. Fairway has good pizzas, pastas and burgers. I especially like to have a plate of pasta and glass of wine on a cold winter's night. For our most recent visit, I had a good burger with fries, my wife enjoyed her salmon, and my son had cacio e pepe. Prices are good, but service can be slow.

Food upstairs is as good as the market below.

By Blodges |

Everything from ham and eggs to steak. All of it terrific. New York specials like whitefish salad and lox&bagels. Ver good service. Wonderful desserts.

Eh. Not a good choice.

By Clare706189 |

Service was fabulous. Menu items sounded promising but burgers were WAY overcooked and dry. Nice roll. Cole slaw could be a bit more generous. Coffee wasn't piping hot. Good separation between tables. I probably wouldn't go back. Nor would my friends. It's a shame. It should be better.

Good quality breakfast, mediocre service

By Traveling with passion |

Breakfast was surprisingly good quality. Once you enter the place and get seated, you already get an idea that the service is not their strength, but at this price, who cares? Pancakes were nice, yogurt with granola and fresh fruits and creme cheese bagels with fried eggs - all fresh and tasty. Just don’t bother too much about your coffee arriving on time with your food or getting a coffee refill without asking for it twice.

Unfriendly

By NewYorkCityEscapee |

Very unfriendly service. We'll not be back. The staff in the market downstairs is not much better. But if truth be told their produce and bread section is the best in the city.Just stay away from the cafe upstairs .

Hidden favorite of Upper West Siders

By Mark P |

Finding it is not easy (it's on the second floor, reachable by a barely marked stairway from the street or an elevator inside the store), but the Fairway Cafe is a reliable venue for good hamburgers, roast beef and other staples at moderate prices. It's just steps from the Beacon Theater and a few blocks from the AMC Loews Lincoln Square13 cinemas but usually has tables available, even on weekends. It's not fine dining (the Upper West Side has few such restaurants), but it's perfect for a quick, satisfying meal.

Delicious food

By Donna T |

The fish, crab cakes and sandwiches are delectable. High quality food is served piping hot and the complementary spices and herbs added to each dish create a memorable dining experience.

Great value.

By Kate R |

Great food and a great price. This is a hidden gem in the upstairs of the Fairway Market. I met a friend that lives on the Upper West Side for breakfast. It is one of her favorite breakfast places in the city. Nice to eat with the locals.

Great Breakfast!

By LaraineP1 |

My husband and I had a delicious breakfast cooked to order! I wish we had a Fairway Cafe and market in Macon, Georgia!

Great place for veggie mediterranean sandwich

By Dinesh S |

If you are vegetarian / vegan, and looking for quick bite, take their Mediterranean sandwich and bean soup. Fast and tasty.

Happy return visit

By Traductora |

We visited on a Sunday afternoon as a group of 7, and were impressed to be seated quickly. We ordered pizzas, salads and pancakes, followed by pies, tea and coffee. The food was all very good, and service was friendly and efficient. I had been here a couple of times several years earlier, and was pleased to find it as good as I remembered.

Great place to eat

By Indraneal M |

Food is fairly priced food is great. this place has amazing food for breakfast. You must have the waffles.

Great burger!

By Lynn B |

After doing a bit of grocery shopping, we went upstairs for dinner. We both had the Angus beef hamburger which was excellent. The hamburger was perfectly prepared; the Cole slaw was delicious and the garnishes were served on a separate plate for the hamburger. The plate was covered in tasty French fries which I wanted to polish off, but exercised constraint and didn't eat the entire serving. Twelve dollars for the meal which was worth every penny! Great customer service and spacious area.

Good Fare at Fairway Cafe

By SoCalValleyGirl |

I had just arrived in New York and after lumbering uptown in traffic from the train station I was more than happy to discover Fairway was so close to my hotel. Although I had their breakfast a while back, I didn't recall having lunch there prior to this trip. Well, lo and behold...it did not disappoint. Yes, I know it seems like anyone can make a simple chopped salad with chicken, but they can't. I know because I order this all the time and there are so many hit and misses I won't bore you with them because the fare at Fairway is terrific. I had the salad and my colleague had the same. What a tasty treat on a Wednesday afternoon in hot and humid Manhattan. The service was good, the atmosphere just what you would expect over a market (even better, I think) and it really is a must dine kind of a place is this is the kind of place you enjoy.

Tried to eat here but wouldn't let us sit a good table

By Martha G |

I stay at the Hotel Beacon once or twice a year and enjoy eating at the Fairway for the past 14 years or did until today. My husband and I went up for a quick bite to eat, were told that they weren't serving dinner. We said that we would just have a drink and dessert. The only problem is that we could only sit in a fairly gloomy area in the back because they were setting up for dinner. He talked to manager but Willy didn't really care. I am sitting at the Beacon Bar now and notice there is still no one eating there. I'm not a big customer- about $400 a year but am reconsidering ever eating there again. Disappointing on service and pleasing a customer. I should mention that the Beacon said I could sit where I wanted.

Blech, Yuck, Terrible,

By NYFoodDude |

This could possibly be the worst brunch meal I've ever had in NYC, and I've lived here 32 years. Take my advice, go somewhere else. Don't even say, Oh I'll give it a try. Run, I mean run. Let's see. First, it took over 20 minutes for someone to actually come by our table to take drink orders. Then once placed it took another 15 minutes to receive (including a reminder in between). Our server was mostly incognito, and never came over to our table. We had to "flag" someone down for our drinks. Then we placed our order. Nothing crazy - omelettes. Should have been easy, right? So the food showed up another 20 minutes later. Two ordered Lox, eggs and onions. One of those arrived with no lox. My omelette, with just vegetables, was runny, watery, and the inside was uncooked. I ordered toast well done. It showed up barely toasted. I asked for the bacon crispy. It showed up barely cooked. Impossible to get a refill of coffee. I finally had to go to the front of the restaurant, ask who was in charge, and explain what was going on. But it didn't get any better. We returned the omelette that didn't have any lox. All they did was take the same eggs, add the lox back, and then cooked again, so the eggs came out over cooked/dry. The bacon was taken back, the toast was taken back. Both were redone. But restaurants can't take food from the table and put back in a toaster, or on the grill. And you just can't taken eggs from someone's plate and put back on the griddle. To be honest, my wife ate a few bites until she figured out there was no lox. So whoever ate after us got part of my wife's meal in their eggs as well. That's just disgusting. They should just bring everything new. Again impossible to get coffee refills. Finally we got the bill - and i did expect that they would do something of kindness, a credit of something. Not only did they do nothing, but they added charges to our bill that weren't even ours. So i had to show the third waiter we had, so he could remove those charges. I'm telling you, on the upper west side there are so many options. Take my advice and go somewhere else. I am happy to discuss this with anyone at Fairway who would like to reach out.

Deli, restaurant type of place

By Javier D |

The restaurant is part of a deli-market. Food is good but definitely not vegetarian other than salads and roasted vegetables. Good service and good food.

Favorite Breakfast

By MisterBobo57 |

Go here for breakfast! Elaine's pancakes are the best. This is a great neighborhood place at 74th & Broadway, conveniently located near the subway stop at 72nd & Broadway, so easy to get to no matter where you are. Above the Fairway Market, this cafe is comfortable and full of delicious food. Great coffee, bagels, pastries, egg dishes, and THOSE PANCAKES! We have not been for lunch or dinner, but I am sure the food is just as good. This is one of the places we always try to go to when in New York City. It's definitely not a tourist destination, and we like the neighborhood feel of it. Go. Did I mention the pancakes?!

Breakfast like a local

By James C |

8 of us came here for breakfast at the suggestion of a local, I don't think this is a place a tourist would find as it is up three flights of stairs in a grocery store on the upper west side. I big clean room with windows looking out to Broadway and the leafy canopies of the street trees. Awesome service, grey portions, dress ingredients and everything form Bagels to gluten free offerings make sure everyone in your party will find something to there liking. The person who recommended this said you would most likely see an actor or writer or some creative type and sure enough we were dining a few tables from a soap opera star.

Wonderful place to meet a friend for breakfast

By Faye F |

Wonderful place to meet a friend for breakfast Menu very varied … From eggs to pancakes including gluten-free pancakes… Oatmeal… You name it… I even have business meetings here… Very comfortable and not fancy

Great breakfasts at reasonable prices

By Margaret D |

This restaurant is located over the Fairway Market store. We had breakfast here for 3 out of 4 days of our recent NYC visit and were pleased with every choice. The staff were friendly and personable. Got to know a couple of servers quite well and they would actually ask us about our previous day's outings. Nice. The coffee was really good and the food was fresh and prepared as we requested. They open at 08 so we had to find another spot on one of our earlier morning forays. Would recommend this for spot for all ages. The restaurant is on the second floor and I'm not sure if there is an elevator available.

must visit.

By promitheus |

It's your local food store of choice if you're in the area. Way better than anything in the vicinity. Awesome staff and stuff in very reasonable prices.

Fab location

By Classyscotty |

We stayed over the road from fairway and whole experience was fascinating fantastic supermarket with cafe over the top would highly recommend

Well worth another visit

By Trup |

It had been several years since I had had a meal at the Fairway Café (Fairway is best known for being a great grocery store -- the Café is on the second floor and must know to look for it). I met an old friend for lunch and we each took advantage of the fact that the Café offers quite a selection of attractive breakfast options until mid-afternoon (!). We were both quite satisfied with the food and the service. The setting is just fine though nothing special -- that is not the reason to visit this café. The prices are reasonable though not cheap.

Wide Selection of Menu Items

By Richard F |

Seems that Fairway Cafe was recently remodeled. While menu has a large number of selections, meal quality seemed to go down a notch from previous experience. Given the vast number of local Upper West Side restaurants, other choices seem to be more appealing.

Unique Upper West Sider

By schvitzNewYorkCity |

Better for dinner than brunch, IMO. Laid back atmosphere favored by locals, reasonable prices, and dishes properly prepared. If you ask for medium rare, you'll get medium rare. Nearby coffee shops (Viand, New Wave, Cafe82) do a better job with brunch.

What a shame! Management terrible

By jsjan2018 |

We went at 6pm and the place was empty so my husband and I tried to sit at a table for 4. After two servers tried to seat us at a table for 2 crammed next to another 2-top (all empty) a 3rd fellow said we could sit at a table for 4. We did -- next to each other facing out -- and the manager came over saying that we had to sit across from one another in case they needed to use the other side of the table. When we objected the manager asked what our problem was and why we had such a bad attitude. We gathered our things and left, arguing with the manager and insisting it was he who had the attitude, not us, with him insisting we had the attitude. Mature on all sides! And as we left he said "go! get out! " and shooed us away. By this time my calm husband and not so calm me were cursing him out and vowing never to return, which we won't. As lifetime UWS residents I've been to and hated this place for exactly the same reason -- ugly, unfriendly people serving mediocre food -- for more than a decade. But I'm always dragged by someone who insists it's not really so bad -- by the way, what a rousing recommendation. But this was the last time. They deserve what they get in this sad, awful place.

Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner are Delicious

By docmmnyc |

I love Fairway Cafe. The food is fresh, delicious, and relatively inexpensive. The service is great, and the atmosphere informal. Entrees are always good portions, and if you have enough room for dessert, everything is delicious. What a great neighborhood gem.

Good place for a bite

By Shellers67 |

The Fairway Cafe is above the supermarket. A great selection of fresh produce, and pre prepared foods.

Decent little spot for reasonable price

By AnnieJuly |

Called in on last day for a sit down breakfast that didn’t cost $20. It was relaxed atmosphere and service was fine (I was surprised to find NYC lacking in really pleasant service as a rule so whilst I wouldn’t rave about the service it was better than a lot of places). Good selection for breakfast, reasonable portion size (by which I mean it wasn’t tediously over-sized, requiring you to leave half of it), regularly filled coffee that tasted good. Had omelette which was tasty and filling. This place is not gourmet but it’s not pricey and you could do worse than try here.

A great coffee shop

A great coffee shop and small eatery after you shop for wonderful fresh fruits and veggies! as a tourist even if you do not buy anything you still will get a New York west side fun experience!

Good eats on the UWSide

A great place for dinner on the upper west side. I have never had to wait for a table and have had fun waiters each time. Every time I visit the city I pop in to get some groceries and then dinner upstairs. Totally easy. Hubby ordered the crab cakes and it was super filling. I have had some many good meals there I have lost count. Get the three course meal deal. It's totally worth it!

Corporate America

By ChasDickens |

All good things must come to an end, and I am afraid the upstairs cafe at Fairway is now one of them. When Mitch London was at the helm, the restaurant served dependably prepared dishes at bargain basement prices. Where else can you still go and find 20$ bottles of wine on a winelist? The service has always been well-intentioned, if a little rough around the edges, and the decor--well, the less said the better--but the kitchen has taken a nosedive in the past months since London was fired, and it is not likely to recover. Like the food store itself, which was once one of the idiosyncratic wonderful things about living in New York, the Fairway Cafe has also fallen victim to corporate greed. You need examine every item there carefully now before purchasing, because the store whose motto was once "Like No Other Market" should change its slogan to "More like Shop-rite Every Day."

Great place and great food!

By EmmaWK89 |

My family and I were visiting New York for Christmas from England and our hotel was right opposite the Fairway Market and Cafe. We ate here quite a lot including breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a wide variety of food for everyone's tastes and it is all delicious! I think between my whole family we got through a lot of the menu and it was all fantastic!

The staff are all lovely and made us feel so welcome. It can be quite difficult when visiting a new city (and country!) to find homely places to eat but we were so lucky to find the Fairway cafe tucked above the supermarket.

If we're ever in New York again we will definitely be visiting.

Great food and prices

Great breakfast and lunch options, good food and servings, friendly staff. We often had brunch as late sleepers and couldn't decide whether to have breakfast or lunch so would end up with a bit of both!

Great breakfasts and lunches

We love this market and restaurant on Broadway between 74th and 75th. Great breakfasts and lunch salads (we've never tried it for dinner).

Hideaway gem

Tucked above the market, this little cafe serves a wide-range of dishes from steaks and seafood to pizza and pasta. Onion rings were the best that I've had in a long time! The service was excellent; our waitress was so friendly and quick to offer suggestions.

(Not-so) hidden gem

If you time it right you can be seated fairly quickly at Fairway. The food is always good. It's not cuisine, but it is fresh, beautifully prepared and though there are no frills, you don't leave that place wanting. Its great for kids, great for Grandma (there is an elevator next to the pasta shelf in the Market, just ask) and great if you need a good meal served by brusque but competent staff.

This place became a favourite of ours

Great West Side Spot for a Quick Bite

By Ken T |

We have loved the Fairway Cafe for years. On our last trip it was located directly across the street from our hotel (Hotel Beacon) and we patronized it for breakfast many days. The food is good and reliable and the staff are very friendly. When in New York (on the West Side) we always look forward to stopping in at the Fairway Cafe

kill two birds with one stone, dinner and food shopping, one place

Informal local restaurant, good service and nice menu. Prices are reasonable, not cheap, but OK. I like the pizza. This is a local place for us and we tend to go there about once a month.

The Hot Honey Chicken sandwich was so good. I did take the Apple slaw off the sandwich though. My husband had a tuna sandwich on toast and said it was great.

Delicious Meals

Our group of 5 dined here and it was really fabulous. The food was fresh and cooked to perfection. We thought that it would be average and really surprised us between the amazing taste and the large selection. We all loved our meals!

Amazing

Wish we had a market like this at home. It was FAB! Great produce and lots of variety. Something great about NYC.

Amazing spot, on the second floor of the market. Home made tasty food. Service can be improved I think but is not a issue. Perfect spot for the waiting before de Beacon (in front)

Great place for breakfast!

We we're staying at the hotel across the road and came across this cafe on Trip Advisor. We weren't disappointed! Really tasty food and a lovely chilled atmosphere. Great value for money too. Would highly recommended for anyone else staying in the area looking for a decent breakfast.
